Manchester’s Local Gems: Where Food, Music, and Community Come Together

Two local businesses help shape Manchester’s identity and strengthen community ties.

In small towns, a few cherished places do more than serve great food and drinks — they create lively experiences that unite the community. Local favorites like River Raisin Distillery and The Village Tap go beyond their culinary niches to offer dynamic entertainment options that draw residents together for unforgettable moments and add a vibrant twist to the community’s social scene.

The owners of these local gems recognized a need for spaces that offer more than meals and drinks. A warm ambiance awaits at The Tap, followed by familiar faces behind the bar, the comforting sizzle of burgers on the grill, and affordable prices. Meanwhile, River Raisin Distillery invites you into a vibrant atmosphere with live music, seasonal cocktails, and appetizers that are as memorable as the experiences they create.

THE VILLAGE TAP: A HOME FOR MUSIC, TRADITION, AND COMMUNITY

A cornerstone of Manchester’s community, the Village Tap is an establishment that is steeped in decades of family, tradition, and a shared love for music and connection. Jack and Heidi Stein, who have owned the Tap since Jack’s parents purchased it in 1976, have carried forward the welcoming spirit that makes this space feel like home.

“We are fortunate to have staff who focus on making everyone that walks through our doors feel welcome and important,” said Stein. “The sense of belonging and familiarity keeps people returning for that personable, hometown experience.”

Music has always been at the heart of The Tap, beginning with Oktoberfest, where Bavarian tunes complement traditional German dinners to celebrate Manchester’s heritage. Over the years, the Steins expanded the offerings, introducing events like “Roosterpalooza” during the Manchester Chicken Broil.

“We encourage people to bring their dinners, listen to music, and enjoy the atmosphere under the tent that night,” said Stein. “As times changed, it evolved into Rocktoberfest.”

Today, The Village Tap is renowned for its weekly open mic nights, where local “jammers” share the stage with headlining acts in an atmosphere alive with energy and creativity. These lively performances have fostered a strong network of musicians and music-loving patrons drawn to The Tap’s inviting spirit. John Mooneyham, co-founder of the Manchester Underground Music and Art nonprofit and the coordinator of most of The Tap’s music, says the Wednesday open mic nights are a favorite.

“Local musicians love to get a show at The Tap because they know it’s a place with enthusiastic, music-loving patrons,” said Mooneyham. “Southeast Michigan is a hotbed of musicians of all levels, and there’s a huge pool to draw acts from.”

This connection to music is woven into Manchester’s cultural fabric. Michael “Cub” Koda, a Manchester High School graduate who wrote the hit “Smokin’ in the Boy’s Room,” which Motley Crue later covered, left an indelible mark on the town’s musical history. The Tap continues this legacy by hosting local and regional acts, keeping Manchester’s passion for live music alive and thriving.

The Steins’ dedication to Manchester extends beyond music. They actively support school programs, as their son, a high-

school student, is involved in band, quiz bowl, robotics, and the wrestling program. Additionally, they collaborate with local businesses and work closely with organizations like the Manchester Men’s Club and Community Resource Center. Heidi, a retired Manchester Community Schools educator, and Jack, a Manchester native, exemplify the close-knit values of their town while continuing to enrich it with events like acoustic jams, holiday celebrations, and sporting event watch parties.

The Steins and their staff are always ready for a good time. Whether friends gather at The Tap for an evening of Bunco or a reunion or strangers become friends over a game of pool, there’s always fun in the air. People can stop by for a quick drink and food while enjoying live acoustic music or for no reason other than good conversation.

BEYOND THE BARREL: RIVER RAISIN DISTILLERY BUILDS COMMUNITY THROUGH CONNECTION

River Raisin Distillery, while known for its handcrafted spirits and show-stopping Bloody Marys topped with everything from crispy bacon and boneless chicken to soft pretzels and cheesecake, is a space where stories are shared, connections are forged, and memories are made. From their

opening in 2020, Joseph and Krista Jarvis set out to make their distillery more than a business.

Starting with simple themed weekends and food trucks, they’ve grown their offerings to include live music, arts and crafts classes, food demonstrations, and special events catering to various interests.

“It’s all about bringing people together and creating memorable experiences beyond just food and drinks,” said Jarvis.

River Raisin’s versatility is evident in its event offerings. From weddings and baby showers to fundraisers for local schools and nonprofits, the distillery has become a go-to destination for celebrations.

Signature events like the Manchester Co-Op Preschool Chili Cook-Off and comedy nights have become staples, while holiday-themed activities provide a unique way to spend time with loved ones. Whether you want to master the art of sushi, learn all the tricks of getting a perfect sourdough, paint a relaxing dot mandala, or line dance the night away, there’s something for everyone!

Judy Banker Band performing at The Tap

The distillery also serves as a launchpad for local talent. Mooneyham says that Manchester Underground commonly hosts once-a-month music events at River Raisin, including the soulful music of Jon Torrence, contemporary folk music of Kate Hinote Trio, and the bluesy sounds of Chef Chris and his Nairobi Trio.

“We love focusing on local people,” said Jarvis. “We’ve been a starting point for many new businesses and individuals to grow and make connections.”

Things are always happening at River Raisin; but the Jarvises aren’t content to rest on their laurels. Exciting expansions are underway, including an expanded tasting room, a renovated event space, and a new outdoor patio perfect for soaking up the beauty of Manchester. The team looks forward to another year, gearing up to release new spirits and continuing to innovate and delight their patrons.

“As for entertainment options, we’re always open to new ideas,” Jarvis said. “We love trying out different types of events to create a destination where people can have an unforgettable experience.”

The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

“People love having more options right here in little ole Manchester,” Jarvis said. “We’re proud to be part of what makes this town unique.”

The Jarvises are deeply involved in local initiatives, serving on community boards and contributing to projects that drive Manchester forward. They said they’re proud to be one of the many reasons folks choose to visit the town and experience everything it offers, and it shows.

WHERE PEOPLE GATHER, AND MEMORIES ARE MADE

Whether savoring a meal, reconnecting at a reunion, or enjoying an unforgettable night of live music, The Village Tap and River Raisin Distillery stand as the twin pillars of Manchester’s vibrant community life. The Village Tap remains the town’s beating heart, where cherished traditions thrive and new memories are born. At the same time, River Raisin Distillery transforms every visit into an experience, whether through a local band’s summer serenade, a hands-on craft class, or a perfectly crafted cocktail.

Together, these establishments embody what makes Manchester unique: businesses fueled by passion, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to their community. For locals and visitors alike, they offer more than great food, drinks, and entertainment — they’re spaces where stories unfold, connections deepen, and everyone shares the rewards of a thriving, united town.

Preparing Your Home for Sale

Cost-Effective Projects Buyers Will Love

The real estate market in 2025 is predicted to be both exciting and competitive, with buyers looking for homes that are not only move-in ready but also offer value and charm. For homeowners preparing to sell, making strategic, cost-effective upgrades can significantly enhance your property’s appeal and ensure a strong return on investment (ROI). Buyers tend to make decisions based on emotion and practicality, so it’s crucial to strike the right balance between aesthetics, functionality, and value.

From enhancing curb appeal with simple landscaping to refreshing your kitchen and bathrooms with budget-friendly updates, these projects are certain to make a big impact. Modern flooring, energy-efficient improvements, and opening up spaces can make your home feel more inviting. A fresh coat of paint, updated lighting, and strategic staging will further elevate your home’s appeal, ensuring it’s marketready and irresistible to potential buyers.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER MOST

Imagine pulling up to your home for the first time. What do you notice? The curb appeal is your home’s handshake. It is the first impression buyers get and often sets the tone for their entire tour. Enhancing your exterior doesn’t have to mean major landscaping overhauls. Start with the basics depending on the season, like mowing the lawn, raking leaves, or keeping the snow shoveled. Keeping the outside neat and tidy creates a lasting first impression.

In spring and summer, plant colorful flowers, add native plants that require minimal upkeep, and freshen up garden beds with mulch. Ideas you can do year round to add inviting touches include: installing solar-powered pathway lights, painting the front door a welcoming color like navy blue or deep red, and replacing worn-out house numbers or mailboxes. Freshly painted shutters and trim can also enhance the overall appearance of your home, making the

exterior look well-maintained and polished. These affordable updates invite buyers to step inside and can deliver a high ROI.

To help you identify the most visible repairs that are needed, try walking through your home as if you’re seeing it for the first time. You may also invite a friend or relative over, to provide a fresh perspective. Alternatively, if you know there are repairs that need to be made, have your contractor walk through and point out things he would recommend to make your home more appealing to buyers.

“Hiring a contractor to make repairs to a house before selling is advisable because it can significantly increase a property’s appeal to potential buyers, leading to a faster sale and a higher selling price,” said Brian Adiska with Orchard Creek Custom Carpentry. “You may also potentially avoid price negotiations related to necessary repairs identified during a home inspection.”

THE HEART OF THE HOME

Buyers love kitchens, as this is the space where families often gather, meals are shared, and memories are made. But kitchen renovations don’t have to mean tearing everything out and starting fresh. Focus on smaller, impactful updates:

• Cabinet Facelift: Repaint cabinets in a fresh, neutral color like white or light gray and replace hardware with modern handles or knobs

• Backsplash Upgrade: Install a timeless subway tile backsplash or a budget-friendly peel-and-stick option for a quick refresh

• Fixture and Appliance Refresh: Swap out old faucets, light fixtures, or even a dated range hood with sleek, modern alternatives

These updates can give your kitchen a whole new look without the hefty price tag. Also doing a thorough job cleaning, decluttering, and organizing can make your kitchen more appealing to potential buyers.

RELAXING RETREATS

Bathrooms are second only to kitchens in importance to buyers. Simple touches that are cheap and easy to make, only requiring a bit of elbow grease, and can create a clean, relaxing atmosphere.

Brighten up tile and bathroom fixtures by cleaning or replacing caulk and existing grout lines. Replace your towel bars and install modern faucets and showerheads. Add a spa-like feel by replacing an old mirror with one framed in wood or metal. Replace dim lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting above the vanity. Creating a fresh, updated bathroom can make your home feel more luxurious without requiring a full remodel.

SAY GOODBYE TO CARPETS

Flooring has a major impact on how buyers perceive a home. Current buyers are drawn to durable, eco-friendly options like luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or engineered hardwood. These materials are affordable, stylish, and easy to maintain, which is ideal for busy families or pet owners.

If you’re dealing with worn-out carpets, consider replacing them in key living areas with updated flooring options. Even

refinishing hardwood floors can provide an excellent ROI, making your home feel fresh, modern, and move-in ready.

APPEAL TO THE ECO-CONSCIOUS BUYER

As sustainability continues to dominate conversations, energy efficiency is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a musthave for many buyers. Making your home greener can be as simple as sealing windows and doors to prevent drafts, upgrading to a smart thermostat, and replacing old lightbulbs with energy-efficient LEDs.

For a bit more investment, consider adding attic insulation or upgrading to Energy Star-rated appliances. Not only will you attract environmentally conscious buyers, but you’ll also be able to highlight lower utility costs — an attractive feature for any homeowner.

CREATE OPEN AND FUNCTIONAL SPACES

Buyers are looking for homes that feel spacious and versatile. If your home has small or awkward rooms, consider opening things up by removing non-load-bearing walls to create an open-concept living area. Rearrange furniture to maximize flow and natural light. Stage spaces like a home office or gym to demonstrate their potential. Even small changes, such as

Providing plenty of light, updating faucets, and placing a framed mirror above the vanity can give your bathroom a spa-like feel.

decluttering and removing oversized furniture, can transform a room and make it feel larger.

ILLUMINATE THE POSSIBILITIES

Never underestimate the power of paint and good lighting. A freshly painted, neutral-color can make any space feel larger, cleaner, and more inviting. Popular and versatile shades include warm whites, soft beiges, and gentle grays. These hues not only appeal to a broad audience but also allow buyers to envision their personal style in the home.

Bright, well-lit spaces feel more welcoming and spacious. Replace dim or outdated fixtures with modern designs and add smart bulbs or dimmers for versatility. Provide additional lighting in key areas like the kitchen, bathrooms, and living room to showcase your home.

DECLUTTER, CLEAN, AND STAGE FOR SUCCESS

Perhaps the most cost-effective way to prepare your home for sale is to declutter, deep clean, and stage it to highlight its best features. Remove personal items, excess furniture, and anything that might distract from the home’s potential.

Hiring a professional stager can be an excellent investment, but do-it-yourself staging with carefully chosen furniture and

decor can work just as well. Make each room feel functional, inviting, and ready for buyers to imagine themselves living there.

“Real estate is not just about property; it’s about people. Decluttering your home can help the new buyers paint themselves into their new future,” said Geri Uihllein with the GU Crew at Howard Hanna. “Staging your home can be done with proper placement of a few of your items, coupled with a few new items.”

WHAT BUYERS WANT

This year, buyers are looking for homes that feel modern yet timeless, eco-friendly, and adaptable to a range of lifestyles. Showcasing spaces that are functional, energy-efficient, and move-in ready is key to making a strong impression. Having a friend who can give you an honest opinion of repairs that need to be done and working with a real estate agent or contractor early in your process can help you decide where to focus your time and attention.

Selling your home in 2025 doesn’t have to mean pouring thousands of dollars into renovations. By focusing on strategic, cost-effective updates, you can create a home that buyers will fall in love with while maximizing your ROI. With a little effort and a clear plan, your home will stand out in the competitive market and have buyers lining up to make an offer.

Apply a fresh coat of paint in warm whites or other neutral colors that appeal to a broad range of home buyers.

Guide to Financing and Buying Your First Home

A Comprehensive Guide to Financing Your First Home

Owning a home is a dream for many, and turning that dream into reality requires careful planning and smart financial decisions. Financing your first home can be a complex process, but with the right knowledge and steps, you can navigate the journey with confidence. In this article, we’ll walk you through the essential steps to make your homeownership dreams come true.

STEP 1: ASSESS YOUR FINANCIAL HEALTH

Before you dive into the world of mortgages and loans, it’s crucial to assess your current financial situation. Start by reviewing your credit score, as it plays a significant role in determining your eligibility for a mortgage and the interest rates you’ll be offered. Obtain a credit report from a reputable agency and address any discrepancies or issues.

Next, calculate your debt-to-income ratio, which is the percentage of your gross monthly income that goes toward paying debts. Lenders often use this ratio to evaluate your ability to manage monthly payments. Aim for a ratio below 43%, as it is generally considered a healthy benchmark.

STEP 2: SET A REALISTIC BUDGET

Once you have a clear understanding of your financial health, establish a realistic budget for your home purchase. Consider your current expenses, future financial goals, and potential changes in income. Your budget should not only cover the mortgage but also factor in property taxes, homeowners’ insurance, maintenance costs, and potential homeowners association fees.

Take advantage of online calculators to estimate monthly mortgage payments based on different loan terms and interest rates. This will give you a better idea of the price range you can comfortably afford.

STEP 3: SAVE FOR A DOWN PAYMENT

“We find the thing holding many people back from owning a home is that they think they can’t,” said Bob Yopko, with First Equity Residential Mortgage. “I suggest anyone interested in home ownership contact an experienced lender to find out where they stand. They might be pleasantly surprised.”

One of the most significant financial hurdles for first-time homebuyers is the down payment. While some loan programs allow for lower down payments, saving as much as possible can open up more options and reduce the overall cost of your mortgage.

Experts recommend aiming for a down payment of at least 20% of the home’s purchase price to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI) and secure better loan terms. Create a dedicated savings account for your down payment and explore government programs or employer-sponsored assistance that may help you save more efficiently.

STEP 4: EXPLORE MORTGAGE OPTIONS

With your finances in order and a down payment in the works, it’s time to explore mortgage options. There are various types of mortgages, each with its own advantages and considerations. Common options include fixed-rate mortgages, adjustable-rate mortgages, FHA loans, and VA loans.

Compare interest rates, loan terms, and closing costs from different lenders to find the best fit for your financial situation. Don’t hesitate to consult with mortgage professionals who can provide personalized advice based on your needs.

Bob Yopko, Loan Originator, and Bobby Yopko III, Office Manager, with First Equity Residential Mortgage

STEP 5: GET PRE-APPROVED

Once you’ve identified a suitable mortgage option, seek preapproval from your chosen lender. This involves providing detailed financial information and undergoing a credit check to determine the maximum loan amount you qualify for.

STEP 6: FIND THE RIGHT HOME

Armed with a pre-approval letter and a solid understanding of your budget, you can start the exciting journey of finding your dream home. Work with a real estate agent who understands your preferences, and explore neighborhoods that align with your lifestyle and future plans.

Consider the long-term aspects of a property, such as its resale potential, school districts, and proximity to essential amenities. Don’t hesitate to attend open houses, ask questions, and gather as much information as possible before making a decision.

“I believe it is very important to find an agent/broker that is knowledgeable of the area and market that you are interested in and that you would feel comfortable working with. Also, be sure to ask them about their brokerage and transaction fees because they differ,” said Teri Aiuto with Manchester Real Estate. “I enjoy working with first time home buyers because I share with them the knowledge that I have gained in my 38 years of selling real estate to ensure that they follow the correct path to a successful home buying experience.”

STEP 7: PUTTING IN AN OFFER

When buying a home, making your offer stand out to sellers is crucial, especially in competitive markets. It can be discouraging when houses are selling for thousands of

dollars over asking price and many are all cash offers. Even if you don’t have cash, but are preapproved for a mortgage, there are other ways to strengthen your offer.

An escalation clause in your offer can automatically increase your bid in response to competing offers, ensuring you don’t overpay yet remain competitive up to a maximum limit. Additionally, including an appraisal gap guarantee is a commitment that you will cover any difference between the offer price and a lower appraised value, providing reassurance to sellers that the sale will proceed as planned. Using these strategies can significantly enhance your offer’s attractiveness to sellers, potentially making the difference in securing your dream home.

STEP 8: NAVIGATE THE CLOSING PROCESS

Once you’ve found the perfect home and your offer has been accepted, it’s time to navigate the closing process. This involves finalizing the mortgage, completing a home inspection, and ensuring all necessary paperwork is in order.

Review the closing costs carefully and be prepared to cover expenses such as attorney fees, title insurance, and property taxes. Work closely with your real estate agent and mortgage lender to ensure a smooth and successful closing.

HOMEOWNERSHIP AWAITS

We find the thing holding many people back from owning a home is that they think they can’t,” said Bob Yopko, with First Equity Residential Mortgage.”I suggest anyone interested in home ownership contact an experienced lender to find out where they stand. They might be pleasantly surprised.”

Financing and buying your first home may seem like a daunting task, but with careful planning and the right steps, you can turn your homeownership dreams into reality. Assess your financial health, set a realistic budget, save for a down payment, explore mortgage options, get preapproved, find the right home, put in a competitive offer, and navigate the closing process. By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to unlocking the door to your dream home and enjoying the many benefits of homeownership.

Exploring a Career in Skilled Trades: A Path Worth Considering

The Hands-On Route to Success

Deciding on a career path is a significant decision, but if you’re inclined towards hands-on work that yields immediate, tangible results, the skilled trades are worth considering. These professions are not just jobs; they are critical roles that keep society running smoothly and offer personal fulfillment, financial stability, and numerous other benefits. Students in Manchester may embark on a journey in pursuing a career in the skilled trades in a variety of programs available through Career and Technical Education (CTE) at the South & West Washtenaw Consortium (SWWC).

“The building trades program has been a great opportunity for me to gain basic knowledge in building. I’ve had a great time making lots of friends and the teachers are great,” said Evan Seegert, a Manchester High School student. “I’d much rather have a hands-on experience than be stuck in a classroom.”

BENEFITS OF THE SKILLED TRADES

Pursuing a career in the skilled trades can be a smart, rewarding decision. Skilled tradespeople are always in high

demand due to the essential nature of their work, which includes construction, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and more. The persistent need for these skills means that job security in this sector tends to be robust.

Variety, a sense of accomplishment, and financial considerations contribute to high job satisfaction in many of the skilled trades. Working in a trade often means no two days are the same. The work can involve different locations, varied projects, and unique challenges, which keeps the workday interesting and dynamic. There is a unique satisfaction that comes from crafting or repairing something with your own hands. Additionally, skilled trade jobs often offer competitive salaries that are comparable to or even exceed those of jobs requiring a four-year college degree.

“Welding is a field rich with opportunities,” said Randal Butts, a welding instructor at SWWC. “With competitive wages, job stability, and entrepreneurial potential, students who pursue welding through CTE programs gain valuable skills that employers highly seek.”

Other financial advantages for skilled trades people include the opportunity to work overtime and the opportunity for advancement. Skilled trades people can advance in their careers by increasing levels of certification and specialization, by moving into management and supervisory roles, or by going into business for themselves.

With competitive wages, job stability, and entrepreneurial potential, students who pursue welding through CTE programs gain valuable skills that employers highly seek,” said Randal Butts, a welding instructor at SWWC.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE SKILLED TRADES

For those who prefer active, engaging work environments over desk jobs, skilled trades provide the opportunity to work with their hands, solve practical problems, and see tangible results. Here are just a few of the fields available in the skilled trades:

• ELECTRICIAN: Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power systems in homes, businesses, and factories, ensuring that electricity is safely and efficiently brought to every device that needs it.

• PLUMBER: Plumbers install and repair pipes and fixtures that carry water, gas, or other fluids in residential and commercial settings. They are critical in designing systems that effectively manage water and waste.

• CARPENTER: Carpenters construct and repair structures, buildings, and homes. Some work as builders, others as remodelers, or they may also build custom furniture and cabinetry.

• HVAC TECHNICIAN: HVAC technicians work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings. Some work in commercial buildings and others service or install equipment in homes.

• WELDER: Welders use equipment to join metal parts, fixing and fabricating metal structures, tools, and vehicles across a variety of industries. Welding requires a steady hand and precise attention to detail.

• HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR/MECHANIC: Heavy equipment operators work with large machinery and vehicles used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries. They also need to know how to maintain, and repair heavy equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, excavators, and loaders.

• AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN/MECHANIC: Automotive technicians diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles. They work on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other mechanical and electrical systems.

“I have been in the program for two years and I can confidently say that this program has taught me skills that I will hold on to and use throughout my whole life,” said Malic Magnusson, a Manchester High School student. “What makes this class so special is how versatile welding really is. Welding can be applied to fabrication, automotive, repairs, and so much more.”

OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH THE SOUTH & WEST WASHTENAW CONSORTIUM (SWWC)

The South & West Washtenaw Consortium (SWWC) provides Career & Technical Education (CTE) opportunities to 11th and 12th-grade students enrolled in the Chelsea, Dexter, Lincoln, Manchester, Milan, and Saline school districts.

The SWWC offers traditional CTE classes such as Culinary Arts, Automotive, Welding, Building Trades, Cosmetology, and Health Science, as well as nontraditional CTE classes such as Marketing, Accounting, Hospitality & Tourism, Computer-Aided Design, Cybersecurity, and Engineering and Robotics.

CTE classes offer a wealth of benefits that can positively impact a student’s future, such as:

• Hands-On Learning: CTE classes provide practical, hands-on experience in various fields, allowing students to develop valuable skills that are directly applicable to real-world situations.

• Career Exploration: The SWWC programs offer a wide range of courses in diverse industries, allowing students to explore different career paths and discover their passions.

• Industry Certification: Many CTE courses offer the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications, which can enhance students’ resumes and make them more competitive in the job market.

• College and Career Readiness: By participating in CTE classes, students will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to begin the next stage of their life after high school. If students complete a full year of their CTE class and earn a 2.0 or higher, they can obtain college credit.

• Leadership and Scholarship Opportunities: Every CTE program has a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO), which offers additional leadership opportunities and the ability to earn scholarships.

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO BUILD A BRIGHT FUTURE

From electricians wiring up our world to plumbers ensuring our water runs smoothly, skilled tradespeople are the backbone of our infrastructure. But how does one get started in this fulfilling line of work? High school CTE programs serve as a launching pad, providing students with the practical skills, industry connections, and career readiness needed to thrive in the trades.

“Students learn skills, gain confidence and make friends while tackling building and remodelling projects that serve their communities,” said Jeff Rittenhouse, SWWC Building Trades Instructor. “It is inspiring to have former students come back and share about their progress in training programs or employment. We welcome local contractors to visit our classes to recruit and share their experience and knowledge with our students.”

TRANSITIONING FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER

With a solid foundation from CTE programs, students seamlessly transition into the workforce or pursue advanced training. Armed with practical skills, industry connections, and a clear career path, they can enter careers in the skilled trades, shaping the world around them one project at a time.

“CTE classes like those at SWWC give students real-life skills in a controlled environment,” said Ryan Wood, an automotive technology technician at SWWC. “I took an Auto Tech class in high school just to learn basic car maintenance. Fourteen years later, that interest led me to a college degree and a decades-long career in the auto industry.”

Choosing a career in the skilled trades isn’t just about finding a job — it’s about pursuing an occupation that offers stability, satisfaction, and meaningful impact. High school CTE programs serve as the first step on this journey, empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and connections needed to succeed in the workforce. Whether you’re wiring circuits, welding metal, or building structures, the world of skilled trades awaits — ready to welcome you into its ranks.

5 Tips to Upgrade Your Sleep

Good sleep isn’t just about waking up feeling rested and ready for the day. Quality sleep, and plenty of it, is important for your overall health. While you sleep, your body naturally recharges itself, which puts you at lower risk for cardiovascular problems and chronic conditions like diabetes, as well as improving your immune system.

Sleep also contributes to better brain function, memory, concentration and lower stress. According to the National Institutes of Health, most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep every night to achieve maximum health benefits.

If you’re falling short of the recommended amount of sleep, you may be able to make some adjustments that help you reap the health benefits of better rest. Learn what you can do to improve your sleep with these tips from the experts in safer, healthier sleep at Naturepedic.

REDUCE LIGHT EXPOSURE

Your body’s natural circadian rhythms are closely aligned with light and dark. When your body senses light, it sends signals to your brain that it’s time to be awake. Light also suppresses your body’s production of melatonin, a hormone linked to sleep. Cutting back on bright lights and avoiding devices at least an hour before bed can tell your body it’s time to wind down, and sleeping in a dark room promotes better rest.

INVEST IN THE RIGHT MATTRESS

Your mattress plays a major role in your comfort through the night, so making sure it fits your needs is an important step toward getting better rest. Take control of your comfort with a quality mattress such as Naturepedic’s EOS (Ergonomic Organic Sleep) mattress, which is handcrafted and made

without polyurethane foam, formaldehyde, flame retardants or fiberglass. The breathable layers of certified organic cotton, wool and GOTS-approved latex ensure better temperature regulation while naturally contouring the body. An added feature is the ability to customize each side of the bed by opening the zippers and adjusting the layered components for the perfect comfort combination.

FIND THE RIGHT SHEETS

Sheets that are too stiff, scratchy or otherwise unpleasant make it nearly impossible to settle in for a good night’s rest. Higher thread counts tend to be softer, higher quality sheets. However, you may need to experiment to find which material suits you best.

SET A COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE

When you’re too hot or cold, your mind tends to focus on those sensations rather than allowing you to slip into a slumber. Set your thermostat at a comfortable temperature, adding fans or adjusting the layers of bedding as necessary to achieve the perfect level of cozy comfort.

USE A SOUND MACHINE

If you’re a light sleeper, noise can wreak havoc on your rest. Many people find sound machines offer two key benefits: They provide a soothing sound, such as rain or ocean waves, that allows you to relax and ease into slumber and constant background noise, so additional sounds are less disruptive.

SLEEPING IN SEPARATE BEDS

Sleeping in separate beds or rooms is a choice made by many couples, but results show it has less to do with the health of the relationship and more to do with quality sleep.

According to a survey by Naturepedic, more than 40% of couples who share a bed reported that sleep issues have caused them to question their relationship. Snoring, conflicting sleep schedules and different temperature preferences were frequently cited as concerns. However, motion transfer and mattress comfort were also reasons people said they miss having their own beds.

A bed that allows each person to customize their comfort can alleviate those problems. For example, Naturepedic’s EOS mattress allows you to adjust the layered components inside to achieve the perfect comfort combination on each side.

That’s potentially good news for couples who sleep apart, as 33% of respondents reported having different mattress firmness and softness preferences, which ultimately led to their decision.

“When it comes to sleeping together, these survey results bring to light how critical personalized mattress comfort is,” said Barry Cik, founder and technical director of Naturepedic. “Luckily, you don’t have to choose between having a good relationship or a good night’s sleep.”
