Welcome to Total Local Eaton Rapids 2025-2026!

We’re excited to bring you your community directory dedicated to celebrating local life in Eaton Rapids and supporting small businesses. Formerly known as CRG Directories, we’ve been publishing the business directory (a.k.a. the “phone book”), an Eaton Rapids staple, since 1992. After decades in Eaton Rapids and following a fire in the building we were in on East Knight street, we moved to Mason, Michigan but still serve many communities in the Greater Lansing area.

In this issue, we highlight the return of Urban Air and the celebrations that coincided with this year’s unique event. We also offer tips for homeowners such as buying and financing your first home, practical home maintenance guidelines, and preparing your home for sale. We have included coupons, Kids Scoop, and a hidden object give away, which encourages reader engagement.

We’ve heard from many readers and businesses alike that print publications continue to serve a vital role in communities like Eaton Rapids. Gleaming Airstreams, Vibrant Color, and Autumn Spirit Infused Michigan’s Island City with Creativity and Connection

For the first time since 2019, Airstreams rolled into Eaton Rapids on October 2nd with the return of Urban Air®, bringing with it a gleaming parade of aluminum trailers, nostalgic charm, and community pride. The weekend that followed seemed like a dynamic summer festival with unseasonably warm weather and an abundance of events including live music, an art fair, a quilt show, a community market, the “Pimp Your Blimp” contest, scavenger hunts, an Island City Wine Walk, Autumn on the Island activities, the Grand River Color Tour Triathlon, and even more attractions that coincided with the “Wake Up Downtown” event.

A WARM WELCOME BACK

The City of Eaton Rapid and Eaton Rapids DDA, along with many volunteers and area businesses, hosted and organized the event. The theme for 2025, “Back to the Future,” celebrated the 40 year anniversary of the 80s classic and suited the 101 airstreamers perfectly. Rows of mirror-bright trailers, many decorated to tie-in with the time-travelling theme, stretched down Main Street with their futuristic curved shells reflecting the vintage brick buildings.

Owners came from across Michigan and as far away as Florida, Texas, and Ontario. Some had attended Urban Air years ago and couldn’t wait to return. Others had heard about the event through Airstream Club International and wanted to experience the renowned small-town hospitality firsthand.

Main Street transformed into a neighborhood and extended hospitality. Airstream owners set up lawn chairs and awnings, swapping stories with passersby. Local residents mingled freely, welcomed into the “silver city” that had sprung up overnight. With expanded hours, shops offered Airstream-themed specials and restaurants rolled out seasonal menus. Food trucks filled the side streets, there was a community breakfast at the First Congregational Church, and the Rotary served a Chicago-style Italian Beef dinner.

Live music carried through downtown each night. On Main Street, several street artists played and the entertainment and beer tent on Hall Street featured a variety of mid-Michigan performers. Thursday night opened with Twilight Memories Big Band, an 18 piece orchestra celebrating its 25th year of performing. Rod Villarreal and Universe Band brought their unique sounds to the stage Friday night. The four Saturday night acts included Eaton Rapids own Thick ‘N Thin, country artist Justin Judge, alternative and classic rock band BlueSkye, and the Kevin Wolff Band from Concord, Michigan.

“We are excited that Urban Air made a return to Eaton Rapids after a 6-year hiatus. When Covid hit in 2020, we knew we couldn’t have the event and it was a good time to put it on hold since the last few years had been lower in camper turnout,” said Pamela Colestock, Mayor for the City of Eaton Rapids. “It wasn’t until last year when the Urban Air organizer, Kirk McKellar, asked us if we were ready to give it another try, and we were happy to say yes. It was also time for us to make this a community event with a lot of fun activities, so it wasn’t just about the campers, but more of a fall festival that featured the airstream campers.”

THE SPIRIT OF URBAN AIR

Airstreamers are a unique community — part hobbyists, part historians, and part wanderers. Trailer doors often sport decades’ worth of destination stickers. Some rigs display badges from every state they’ve visited, while others feature custom emblems marking rallies and caravans they’ve attended every year. Many have lovingly restored their trailers from the 1950s and ’60s, preserving original cabinetry, upholstery, and appliances. Others are modernized with solar panels, Wi-Fi, and sleek interiors, blending mid-century design and 21st-century comfort.

Urban Air offers them something rare: a chance to park those stories side by side. Each day you could hear laughter between neighboring campers and the rhythmic hum of conversation echoing off the aluminum shells. Many trailers host open houses, allowing visitors to walk through their vintage to modern models.

THE GRAND RIVER COLOR TOUR TRIATHLON

Saturday morning, the focus shifted from polished aluminum to paddles and pedals as the 5th Annual Grand River Color Tour Triathlon set off along the riverbank. Athletes launched their kayaks into the Grand for a 2K paddle, transitioned to

a 15-mile bike ride, and ended with a 5K run, crossing the finish line in a cloud of brilliant color.

The unique triathlon drew seasoned competitors. Other participants chose to only run in the 5k or to complete the triathlon as a relay team of three. Many Airstreamers lined the race course to cheer on the athletes and in the final leg runners dashed through bursts of powder and applause.

AUTUMN ON THE ISLAND

Vibrant color powder could still be seen on the footbridge at G.A.R. Island Park, as Autumn on the Island commenced, bringing its own family-friendly counterpoint to all the excitement downtown. From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, families strolled between shops downtown and activity stations beneath the park’s trees. The Eaton Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce sold punch cards for $20 that included all the fun fall activities such as painting pumpkins, cooking s’mores over a campfire, and decorating witch hats. Kids enjoyed getting their faces painted while snacking at the caramel apple bar and cookie crawl.

“Autumn on the Island offers a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate the season with a variety of fall-themed activities throughout downtown Eaton Rapids,” said Bryonna Barton,

Director of the Eaton Rapids Area District Library. “The event highlights community spirit, with local businesses joining in by offering special treats, featured drinks, and interactive stations that make the afternoon both festive and memorable. It’s a great example of how Eaton Rapids comes together to create something special for families and visitors alike.”

SCAVENGER HUNTS, CONTESTS & MORE

The PIMP YOUR BLIMP™ contest — an Urban Air staple — brought laughter and creativity to another level while benefiting a local charity. Airstreamers decked out their trailers in theme-focused decor. Many wore costumes from Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown to supporting characters like Lorraine Baines McFly and Principal Strickland.

Airstreamers Gary Flint and Tom Diamond hosted the prom scene Under the Sea, complete with a bubble maker and period music parked in front of City Hall close to Urban Air Square and the Delorean. They also participated in Saturday’s scavenger hunt, with a giant match stick at their rig being an item participants needed to find.

“Our Airstream is a 2018 Globetrotter and was my retirement gift. We came from Columbus Ohio for this event and have traveled as far as Rock Springs Wyoming in our trailer,” said Flint as he showed off destination stickers affixed to their open door.

With so much happening over the long weekend, it was impossible to catch it all — but there truly was something for everyone. Highlights included a Bluey party and story time, art and quilt shows, a community photo contest, a historic walking tour, a free fall and winter clothing giveaway, a ukulele festival, a community market, and a kids’ zone.

Several local landmarks joined in the fun, opening their doors for visitors and special activities, including the G.A.R. Museum, Eaton Outdoor Recreation Center, Eaton Rapids Senior Center, and Miller Farm. Together, they added depth and discovery to a weekend already overflowing with creativity and connection.

A TOAST TO DOWNTOWN

Another standout of the weekend was the Island City Wine Walk, which began Friday at 5:00 p.m. Downtown shops and

restaurants welcomed guests to enjoy six wine tastings across eight locations, each thoughtfully paired with a small bite.

Stops along the route included Ackley-Peters-Haubert Insurance, Craft Co., Darb’s Patio, Fosters Coffee, the G.A.R. Museum, Las Flores, Mooville, and Rooted Salon. The stroll offered the perfect blend of flavor and fun, encouraging visitors to explore, mingle, and savor the evening while getting to know each local business.

ECONOMIC SPARK & SHARED EFFORT

Between airstreamers and an influx of spectators, families, and athletes, Eaton Rapids saw one of its busiest weekends on record. It took the combined effort of the Eaton Rapids DDA, Chamber of Commerce, city staff, and local sponsors to bring all these events together for one cohesive weekend.

“Urban Air was truly a community-wide effort. The original planning committee included more than 20 community volunteers who spent over a year, meeting monthly, to organize every detail — from evening entertainment and daily activities to sponsorship, marketing, and the Urban Air Art Fair,” said Corey Cagle, Director of Parks, Recreation and Events for the City of Eaton Rapids. “Another 20 to 30 volunteers joined in during the event itself, managing the Urban Air Event Tent, Beer Tent, Kids Zone, Triathlon, and more. City staff from every department, as well as the City Council, went far beyond their regular workload to help bring

it all to life. It’s a great example of how Eaton Rapids comes together to bring something so special to our community.”

REFLECTIONS OF COMMUNITY

Throughout the weekend, Eaton Rapids showed its heart. From the Airstream owners who opened their doors for curious visitors, to the athletes cheering one another through the final leg of the triathlon, and the families sharing fall fun on the island, it was a vibrant community in motion. As the colorful powder settled along the river path, and the last trailer rolled out, one impression remained clear: the Island City had never looked, or felt, more awake and alive.

This year’s theme was Back to the Future, complete with a Delorean in Urban Air Square.

Today the club organizes rallies, caravans, and gatherings, like Urban Air®. In these events, trailers travel in coordinated caravans, campsites form into social hubs, and owners trade tips, parts, and stories.

Airstream enthusiasts often embrace a pared-back lifestyle by designing efficient interiors, adding solar systems, insulating for all seasons, and venturing off the grid. Whether weekend getaways or longterm journeys, many see the trailer as more than a vehicle — it’s home, studio, retreat, and statement all at once.

MODERN RESURGENCE

In recent years, Airstreams have experienced a renaissance in tiny-house, glamping, and nomadic living circles. Boutique camping businesses, that blend the outdoor adventure of camping with the upscale comfort and design of a boutique hotel, use custom-designed Airstreams as lodging. Airstream trailers are still hand-crafted in Jackson Center, Ohio, and there is a dealer network on the company website at airstream.com.

Buying a home is a major milestone and caring for your home is a long-term commitment. Beyond the monthly to-do lists and seasonal upkeep, every home has an ongoing cycle of maintenance. These bigger tasks don’t come around every year, but when they do, they matter.

If you’ve recently purchased a home in Mid-Michigan, or if you’re settling into one you’ve owned for years, it helps to understand the bigger picture of home maintenance. With some forethought and a little planning, you can stay ahead of wear and tear, protect your investment, and enjoy a home that’s comfortable and dependable for decades to come.

Keep in mind that Michigan’s climate plays a role in your home’s ongoing maintenance requirements. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snowfall, and humidity all affect the lifespan of materials. What holds up in a dry southern climate may wear more quickly in Mid-Michigan.

USE YOUR HOME INSPECTION AS A STARTING POINT

When you bought your home, you likely received a professional home inspection. Many people set this report aside after the closing process, but it’s actually one of the most useful tools you have. That report tells a story about your home’s condition at the time of purchase. It includes the estimated age of major systems like your roof, furnace, and water heater, and often points out areas to watch.

Instead of treating it as a checklist for immediate repairs, think of your inspection report as a long-range maintenance guide. Look for notes like “monitor,” “showing signs of wear,” or “near the end of its lifespan.” Those clues help you plan what needs attention in the next five to ten years, and what might come up further down the road.

THINK IN TIMEFRAMES, NOT JUST TASKS

Some home projects are monthly or seasonal, but others show up on a longer cycle. By understanding when certain components of your home typically need replacement, you can avoid being caught off guard. You can also budget ahead for the bigger expenses that come with the aging of your home. While not exhaustive, the list below includes many of the larger maintenance items that arise over the long term. Be sure to check with your home inspection report or with local home services professionals for advice unique to your home.

• Refresh mulch beds and amend compacted garden soil

• Trim or reshape mature trees to prevent storm damage and maintain structure

• Reseal decks and porches, especially wood surfaces

• Touch up exterior paint on trim, doors, and other exposed areas

• Inspect and touch up garage doors and thresholds

Every 5 to 10 Years

• Reseal asphalt driveways

• Repaint or restain wood siding and trim

• Replace water heater

• Refresh weather stripping and caulking

• Refinish hardwood floors

• Replace aging shrubs or perennials that have outgrown their space or lost vigor

• Regrade yard or lawn areas where settling, erosion, or poor drainage develops

• Remove invasive or dying trees that pose a risk to the home or utility lines

DON’T OVERLOOK TREE MAINTENANCE

Landscaping often gets attention in the first few years of homeownership, but mature trees deserve special consideration as part of your long-term maintenance plan. Especially in Mid-Michigan, where storms, wet soil, and rapid tree growth are common, regular tree evaluations should be a part of your home maintenance schedule.

“Tree care isn’t just about reacting after damage is done — it’s about planning ahead,” said Justin Brummette, owner of Big Kid Tree Worx. “A tree that’s too close to a structure, showing signs of decay, or suffering from poor drainage can become a costly hazard. In Michigan’s fast-growing conditions, trimming every few years is essential.”

Brummette also notes that removing one tree can change the wind dynamics on your property. “Removing a tree might expose others to winds they’ve never faced before, so smart removal and maintenance matters. And if a tree does fall on your roof, insurance won’t step in until it’s gone and the roof is visible. So, act quickly, remove the tree, and get the roof tarped before more damage is done.”

It’s smart to schedule professional inspections and not delay when a tree is showing signs of distress. Proactive maintenance is always more affordable, and less stressful, than emergency removal after a storm.

BUDGETING AND PLANNING AHEAD

Experts often recommend that homeowners set aside one to three percent of their home’s value each year for maintenance. One percent may be sufficient for newer homes or those in excellent condition, while older homes

or those with deferred maintenance may require more than three percent.

Having a long-term maintenance fund can help you handle big expenses like a new furnace or roof without added stress. It also allows you to take care of things on your own timeline rather than waiting until something breaks.

Proper maintenance isn’t just about keeping things clean or in working order. It’s also about using the right materials and following recommended care instructions. These choices can make future remodeling projects smoother and help you avoid costly surprises later.

“I highly recommend people to not use Murphy’s Oil Soap to clean their hardwood floors. Stick to the properly formulated wood floor cleaners,” said Nik Morehouse, owner of Morehouse Improvements LLC. “Contaminants from using the wrong cleaners can wreak havoc on the results when you have them refinished.”

Using the wrong products — like interior paint on exterior trim or construction adhesive in place of proper caulk — may

seem minor, but they can cause long-term issues. Over time, these materials may peel, crack, or fail to hold up under changing conditions. Choosing the right products from the start helps protect your home and can save time, frustration, and money when it’s time to remodel.

A well-maintained home is more than a financial asset. It’s a place that feels safe, grounded, and comfortable. Planning ahead for long-term maintenance helps protect that feeling, while also preserving the structure and systems that keep your home running smoothly.
