Passing the torch is a time-honored tradition, rich in history and symbolism. In ancient Greece,
the passing of the torch represented an unbroken succession of runners, each passing a light onto the next, heading toward a final goal. This act also signified the passage of responsibility.
The founder of Attention SL magazine, Athena Mariposa, published her debut issue in May 2016. Though its beginnings were humble, with Ms. Mariposa’s drive and fervour, the project flourished and grew into a beloved monthly must-read for its devoted followers.
After six years of intense, focused efforts, however, Athena’s real life no longer allowed her to continue. She published her final issue in November 2022. Not willing to let her vision simply flame out, she looked around for the next
‘runner’
– and she found me.
And she passed the torch.
I accepted that torch with both gratitude and trepidation. Gratitude, because I love the magazine. Being its Lead Photographer in recent years was an honor for me. It’s always felt like a supportive, creative, embracing home. Trepidation, because I knew that my own real-life obligations were unpredictable at best, impossibly demanding at worst. With that in mind, one of my first executive decisions as neophyte Editor-in-Chief was switching the publishing schedule from monthly to quarterly.
It seems I was being optimistic.
A. | 14 | ATTENTION SL Editor’s Letter
L O V E I S L O V E ♥
Yes, after one year and four issues, it’s my turn to pass the torch.
To be clear, despite the stress, the anxiety, the frustrations, the ever-present ‘imposter syndrome’, I have cherished every moment of this toobrief tenure as publisher of Attention SL. I’ve also grown to appreciate Athena’s passion even more while embracing the joy of learning, reaching ever-higher, treasuring the offerings of our incredible contributors – both writers and photographers – as I assembled every single page with love.
I already miss it.
I’m so deeply proud of what we’ve accomplished this past year. On publishing the first issue of the ‘new’ Attention SL last summer, one revered Second LifeTM powerhouse personality whispered to me, “You’ve just become one of the top three magazines on the grid”. High praise indeed, but a double-edged sword as we now felt the pressure of maintaining and, hopefully, exceeding our own standards.
And when I say, “we”, I mean the team of devoted, creative souls who form the backbone of this endeavour. Without them, there would be no Attention SL. I don’t know how I can ever truly express my love and gratitude
for our regular and semiregular contributors – Aria Christen, Boudicca Amat, Brunella Voelisa, Dirk Vanlager (aka The Hotel Inspector), Divos Titanium, Elaine Lectar, Lori Bailey, Moon Poulter Able, Morgaine Warblood, Mya Audebarn, P e d r o, and Verandi Diavolo. All-stars, all of them – our muchadored A-Team.
Our guest contributors have been a mind-blowing, star-studded list of Second LifeTM creative dynamos too - Alecat Breda, Banagher Crisp, Casper Blanco, Charlyrayne, Czar Fenris, Damon Frost, Jamie Dakota, Jason Canucci, Lika Cameo, Lord Wasabi, Luke Niklas Pierce, Manu Coulibaly, Matty King, Mila Maesar, Mrs. Sassypants, Nino Heartsdale, Q, Skip Staheli, Sparklebottom Lasertits, Sunset Theas, The Base Of Bad Ideas, Vexx Daines and Wyatt Frost.
And then there are the four that I lovingly refer to as ‘the kids in the backroom’. Kere Delcon, our Assistant Editor, has been the best possible coach for me, generously sharing his deep knowledge of reallife magazine standards and forms. Eli Hunter, Social Media Director, has given us stunning graphics to share with the world. And finally…
Bellisima (Bella) Benelli, Marketing Manager,
and Nonge Koolhaas, Promotions Director.
Bella and Nonge came to us as a pre-existing team. Between them, they have a seemingly boundless wealth of experience and expertise in a myriad of essential Second LifeTM zones – fashion, business, magazines, you name it. They also share a positive, caring, forward-thinking attitude towards the world.
When I realized that it was my turn to pass the torch, I went to Athena for her advice. We discussed numerous possibilities over several days. Then, like the proverbial lightbulb moment, it hit me.
I messaged her, “What about Bella and Nonge?” She agreed instantly, without reservation.
I offered the torch to them, and they accepted, with enthusiasm.
And so, dear readers, I am thrilled to announce that, beginning with our Summer 2024 issue, Bella Benelli and Nonge Koolhaas are the new publishers and torch bearers of Attention SL magazine. I know they will take it to ever greater heights and do so with ardour and care.
Happy Spring, everyone!

Kere writes about the world: Confessions from someone else’s hot tub
By Kere Delcon
DDEAR JOURNAL… first confession: This entry isn’t really going to be as sexy as the title implies. Essentially my friends and I were trespassing in someone’s virtual home and spent an hour or two in someone else’s hot tub… with pose balls! In those days pose balls sat above anything you were supposed to sit on or interact with, like open invitations to take a load off on whatever was nearby. A ball was a label that signalled the prim you were near had some kind of functionality that could make your avatar do something.
This was more than 17 years ago. Virtual worlds were still relatively new. I was freshly hatched (with
the steam still coming off) and open-ended worlds were a strange concept to me. Coming from The Sims where everything was goal-oriented, what was my motivation here? What was I supposed to – ooooh! A ball! (Sits).
Another strange concept was individual ownership. My friends and I, total noobs, were in someone’s actual house. This wasn’t a free-for-all ‘gamerhood’. The front door was locked for a reason. Thankfully this homeowner had their hot tub on the roof - and thankfully one of the first things these noobs did was learn how to fly – so we made ourselves comfortable.
SECOND CONFESSION: We broke into your home, whoever you are. We didn’t know it was yours. We didn’t know how anything worked. I was so freshly made I didn’t even know that virtual private parts were a thing yet and so I couldn’t even offer myself as tribute in penance for the intrusion. To be fair, I don’t
even know who you are, whoever you are. We may have left your jets running too. I’m sorry.
THIRD CONFESSION: Nothing actually happened. We weren’t naked – we were probably fully dressed in starter outfits to be fair. These weren’t ‘those kind of pose balls’ either – or if they were, we wouldn’t have known how to use them. Essentially, we sat around chatting in someone else’s tub having made a pact to dip our toes (literally) into this weird virtual world… although none of us had toes. Avatars didn’t have toes in those days, sadly. There was no mesh – not even sculpties.
“I was so freshly made I didn’t even know that VIRTUAL PRIVATE PARTS were a thing yet and so I couldn’t even offer myself as tribute in penance for THE INTRUSION.”
Looking back, it’s hard to imagine it now. Second LifeTM has come a long way since those early days. It’s richer, more diverse, more

sophisticated – perhaps less innocent as a result, but infinitely more creative. I’m grateful I found my place even if it has changed over the years. I’ve been a stripper (haven’t we all?), an escort, a DJ, a builder, a store manager, a hunter, a collector, a marketer, an editor and now I have a lifestyle estate.
It’s the possibilities that keep me coming back – and all the connections formed while exploring those. It took a while to figure them out. After my first night in the hot-tub, I didn’t log back in again for nearly a year. Second LifeTM didn’t
‘click’ for me. I didn’t ‘get it’. It didn’t have a clear objective; it was challenging to use and easy to get lost in.
Now I see those things as positives rather than negatives but that’s because I’ve been here a while. My avatar is old which means I’ve seen people come and go over the years. I’ve tried my hand at just about everything and I’ve learned that getting lost is kinda fun.
reasons to stay. It’s why I’m patient when a noob comes trotting through my living room. Usually they just don’t realise, and I can politely tell them that it’s a private home and send them landmarks to some more interesting locations (once they’ve put their pants on). Every noob makes their own discoveries and mistakes along the way. But mine? Well, that’s for another day. g
I’ve also learned that everyone has their own reason for dipping their toe into Second LifeTM. They also have their own Kere Delcon is old. He’s seen too much. He’s been too much. Nowhesitswritingabouthis SLjourneybetweenavapeand acanof energydrink.

A WONDER-ROOM. A unique collection of curiosities. Interesting and peculiar artifacts that tickle the senses yet invoke a sense of wonder and delight. If you have ventured into the Random Matter store, you know of what I speak. It’s a moody locale whose dark halls seem hallowed, housing some of the most interesting items in Second LifeTM. Customers find a hodgepodge of home decor, furniture, jewelry, and accessories littered within. Random Matter caters to not simply one sole base, but rather evokes moody, thoughtful vibes that appeal to many. Owner Nikohl Hax mirrors those vibes, and one can clearly see how her store is quite simply an extension of her.
Invading the grid since 2007, Nikohl started creating simply as a favor to a friend, to help fill a store in a strip mall (long-time Second LifeTM residents will remember those well). That venture morphed into a fullfledged business, bringing eclectic items to reality in a virtual setting. While it’s dark and rustic, the stark contrast of green ivy canvasing the crevices of the store brings
a sense of life in an antique way. Even the ads give a sense of vintage as one peruses her collection. Here you will find things you didn’t even know you needed. Case in point: I picked up the Verona Finger Clip cigarette as I looked around and I haven’t taken it off yet - and I am not even a smoker (thankfully I can ignore the Surgeon General’s warning inworld)!
One of the best parts of featuring such talented artists in Attention SL Magazine is the opportunity to meet and interact with some wickedly interesting people. While Nikohl professes to be on the quieter side, this does not obscure the fact she is very real, and shares what is on her mind. She has a sense of
humor that comes across as intellectual, and this irreverent wit comes out in her magical creations. Far from ordinary, even her avatar has a sense of old-world beauty with a hint of vintage gothic. Quick to thank others for their support, including her real-life boyfriend (who does not play Second LifeTM), she is humble and is not one to demand the spotlight.
Inspired by video games, Nikohl infuses nods to her current favorite games into her work. Like many of the creators we have had the fortune to meet with Attention SL, Nikohl considers her work in Second LifeTM a labor of love; however, she acknowledges that it also includes rage and exhaustion. When asked if she has a favorite creation, she shares that her set, Cabinet of Curiosities, comes to mind. In fact, this set is a great representation of her craft: antique mirrors, rustic furniture, and bleached skulls jettisoned with sprays of vivid green plants - just to name a few of the items. It’s a great sampling of the Random Matter aesthetic. Her love for vintage also includes the 80s, A

and Nikohl gives a spoiler alert that we can anticipate items from that bygone era in some of her upcoming releases.
As the years continue to bring us more beautiful items in Second LifeTM, it seems to become more challenging to stand out and make items that someone has not seen before. Nikohl manages this in spades, and her jewelry, furniture, and decor invoke a spirit that cannot be replicated. Random Matter is truly that - something random that you cannot expect yet know it won’t be something you can just find anywhere, making us love it all the more!
LifeTM. So, in essence I make everything out of pure love, rage, and exhaustion.
DIVOS: What was the first item that you created? Can you tell us what that experience was like?
NIKOHL: Honestly, I have no idea. I’m really terrible about starting projects and almost immediately abandoning them. I do know that the first build I was ever actually proud of was the Keelhauled head chain that I made in 2014. I really poured my whole ass into that one. Every problem I could have imagined popped up while making that
“RANDOM MATTER CATERS TO NOT SIMPLY ONE SOLE BASE, but rather evokes moody, thoughtful vibes that appeal to many.”
ALL ABOUT NIKOHL
DIVOS: Nikohl, thank you so much for spending some time with Attention SL! One of the most popular questions we get for our designer features is - how did you get started creating items in Second LifeTM?
NIKOHL: I started Random Matter as a favor to a friend. She needed someone to fill a spot in her strip mall, so I went and made a bunch of rather unfortunate accessories that only two (incredibly kind) people ever purchased. I sent them both thank you messages. After that, I rebranded and decided to at least try to do the thing right.
DIVOS: You have created so many beautiful products over the years. How do you continue to think of new items that make you excited to create?
NIKOHL: I pull a lot of inspiration from history. Granted, it’s less that I think of new ideas and more that I’m constantly being mentally accosted by things I want to see in the world and in my life, both real life and Second
damned thing and in the end, the response was really good to its release.
DIVOS: Walking through the Random Matter inworld store, one feels a sense of mystery, intrigue, magic – it’s almost spooky. Tell us about the vibe you wanted to create and why.
NIKOHL: I have a moderate to severe obsession with curiosity rooms, so when I finally redesigned my shop, I really wanted people to feel that this is a collection of things that range from strange and historical to magical and of questionable legality.
DIVOS: Magic and fantasy seem to be key inspirations in your work. If you had one special magical power, what would it be?
NIKOHL: I stand by Chronomancy being the most powerful form of magic, and I’m totally down to fuck with time! As much as I would love to say I would use this ability to alter tragic historical events, realistically I would just be titties out on a stone slab eating some grapes…but hey, nice scenery.
SPRING 2024 | 83 | A.
DIVOS: Store ads: do you love them or hate them? Is there one that you are really proud of, or that stands out?
NIKOHL: Detest! I can easily dream up a moment but don’t ask me to capture it.
DIVOS: Have you had an opportunity to collaborate with other impressive creators? What spawns the idea of collaborating and working with someone else? Are there any creators out there with whom you would love to collaborate?
NIKOHL: So far, I’ve been given the absolute

honor of working with BonBon, Beusy, and DISORDERLY. I actually have a written list of stores I adore and would love to get the chance to work with if I ever build up the nerve to actually speak to them. Some of my dream collabs include Vespertine, Contraption, Aii, Hotdog, Vae Victis and several others. I love when a store has a really distinct vibe and sometimes, I see a shop that specializes in an aesthetic that I enjoy but am too intimidated to fully delve into, so collabs can be a really good kick in the ass when you need it.

DIVOS: What item has been your most popular? Is there one creation that you are most proud of in your catalog?
NIKOHL: Cabinet of Curiosities will forever be my precious baby angel. I enjoyed making every item in that collection and I’m planning a sequel because it’s really got its filthy little grippers dug deep into my heart.
DIVOS: Does anyone help you make all this amazing work possible?
NIKOHL: I’m under contractual obligation to say: my amazing boyfriend, who gave you such gems as the ‘Two girls not included’ cup and the novel ‘Pucker’s Cove; A Pirate’s Tale of Booty’

DIVOS: What made you choose the store name Random Matter?
NIKOHL: Man, I wish I knew. It was originally Random Musings and I rebranded pretty soon after, but I’ve never liked the name. The only reason I kept it was because when I mentioned wanting to change it there was outrage! You lucky fuckers.

As for TV, right now I’m drooling over Resident Alien. It’s a delight and honestly…I’ve never connected to a character like I do Harry.

DIVOS: Is there anything you want people to know about Random Matter that we have not had a chance to cover yet?
NIKOHL: Video games are a huge inspiration for me artistically. The atmosphere of almost every set I’ve made coincides with whatever game I’m obsessing over at the time, Cabinet of Curiosities was The Room, Dead Air was Killer Frequency, Game Night was for Baldur’s Gate 3, and so on and so
forth. Usually if you see something of mine and think ‘this gives me xyz-vibes’ you’re probably spot on.
DIVOS: Thanks again so much for your time with Attention SL! g

TTHIS IS A uniquely successful place in Second LifeTM. All the incredible stories that have been told, in the most diverse versions, are so remarkable that they make the visitors’ experience deeply memorable.
This time I had the pleasure of exploring the new version of Elvion –the Blackbird Edition - and sharing the beauty of this natural paradise with you.
The start of the experience is a hilltop that immediately offers a breathtaking view. Take a few steps, and you will arrive at a panel with a teleport map that will help you, and take you to the main locations of the region:
START ABBEY RUINS BEACH CITY FOREST GATE HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE MILL
You are free to explore as you wish. I chose to follow a trail of paths and bridges, perfectly designed to take you

Reliefs in Second LifeTM are always impressive to me, giving a broader view of the place, showing the landscape ahead to the surface of the sea.

Spring has arrived and Elvion is an unmissable destination. g

~ an appreciation
VERY SELDOM DOES one person change an entire industry, whether in real life or Second LifeTM. Frolic Mills was such a person. When Frolic appeared on the scene, he turned the fashion world on its head. His ideas were revolutionary; his eye for detail and marketing were unmatched. In a few short years he went from beginner runway model to virtually running everything in the industry. His forward thinking brought forth the Top Modeling agency and training center, and revolutionized competitionswhich raised the bar for all the models on the grid. He also changed how advertising and promotions work by starting BOSL Magazine, which quickly became the most influential media for the fashion world to ever exist in Second LifeTM. He discovered up-and-coming designers and turned them into household names - creators that are still around and strong today. Second LifeTM residents everywhere feel the effects of Frolic Mills’ legacy – even those who don’t realize they are benefiting from the systems that he put in place.
But who was this Frolic Mills person? He was more than just a legend in the fashion industry. His love of fashion and beauty translated to how he interacted daily. His zest for life was infectious. His laugh and his smile could light up a room. His desire for perfection, while infuriating at times, was also what made him a success and a driving force of nature. He was as fierce in his personal life as he was in his professional life. If he loved you, he went out of his way to show you. He liked to joke around and have fun, and if he picked on you here or there, it was out of love and respect.
Frolic always tried to spread beauty to everyone he knew, but the demons he dealt with daily, he kept to himself. Only his closest friends ever knew. He waged a yearslong battle with cancer, which he beat on multiple points throughout his journey on this plain. He fought with valor and grace. As is too often the case with this horrid disease, he lost his battle and left us too soon. The fashion industry in Second LifeTM, but even more importantly those of us who were fortunate enough to know him on a deeper level, will not soon forget his impact. We miss him and will miss him for a long time to come.
To you, Frolic, it brings us some solace to know that you are no longer in pain, and the fight is now over. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your life, and for all that you shared along the way. Till we meet again, our dear brother and mentor.
Love,
Your Belli and Nongito

The STORYTELLER
BANAGHER CRISP, INWORLD PHOTOGRAPHER AND ARTIST, SHARES THE MOST INTIMATE FRAGMENTS OF HIS SOUL IN HAUNTING, BEAUTIFUL IMAGES
By TORY KING
WITH HIS FIRST Flickr post, barely two years ago, Banagher Crisp instantly established his dreamy, cinematic aesthetic. Passionate acknowledgements followed soon after, from the Second LifeTM cognoscenti. Like many other creators on Flickr, his journey began as a hobby, “something to waste time”, while
inworld. Ever modest, he credits region builders as inspiration, “Creativity is endless in this virtual world, and you can always find a nice scene for a picture wherever you go”. He doesn’t think of himself as a creative person, but rather, a storyteller. His work focuses on moments that are driven by songs he listens to in his daily life. Each image can describe one line of a song, or the whole song. The interpretations of other people, how they view his photos, the stories they see, fascinate him. Of course, Pablo Picasso once stated, “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” We think that Picasso would approve of Crisp’s soul-dusting. Attention SL is grateful that Banagher has shared some personal favorites from his collection with our readers. g

As a Los Angeles native, I enjoy recognizing familiar landmarks while wandering around California Vibes.
I especially love the Santa Monica Pier, historic Pacific Park, Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s (LACMA) Urban Light (by contemporary artist Chris Burden), and the worldfamous shops of Beverly Hills.
But beyond feeling at home, surrounded by iconic Los Angeles, I am aware that there is something more to California Vibes – an atmosphere that encourages connections and a sense of belonging with Second LifeTM residents from all over the globe.
Ryan and Saki Kamala both joined Second LifeTM over 15 years ago. Ryan is the founder of Tryst, a successful, well-known Second LifeTM club. Saki owned the Mahalo Island regions for over eight years. When they met, their friendship was instant. With so much in common, including both being Southern California residents, their plans for a
collaboration began. Eventually becoming more than friends, Ryan and Saki’s vision became reality. One night, while they were out dancing, Second LifeTM DJ Johnny Whadd played California Love by the late Tupac Shakur. Ryan said to Saki, “I finally get to dance with a California Girl to this song!”, and the inspiration behind California Vibes was born.
Saki states, “The vision for California Vibes is to create a modern California theme, to share the sunshine and good vibes we feel here in real life; glowing sunset beaches and piers, the magic of Hollywood - which pays homage to Ryan’s real-life work in the entertainment industry - and the wild party scenes in the downtown Los Angeles areas.” Ryan and Saki share a line from Tupac’s California Love that they take to heart with each event they produce and host, “California knows how to party.”
By putting their passion into building California Vibes, they created a place for Second LifeTM residents to celebrate community, friendship, and the arts.
Ryan and Saki are experts at building regions and experiences, but they are equally talented at building relationships. An example of their skill at bringing people together is evident in their weekly Adventure Runs.
TTHE ADVENTURE RUNS gather Second LifeTM residents to explore other regions, or to take elaborate photos. Recently, there was a Carmen Miranda-inspired conga line. Past Adventure Runs have included dressing as pirates to explore piratethemed regions, playing life-sized interactive Candy Land, and experiencing holiday regions. Brinleejo is California Vibes’ paparazzi leader, taking the time to scout activities and experiences for all to enjoy. The Adventure Runs have provided Second LifeTM residents with a fun and

friendly way to meet people.
While slowly expanding California Vibes across multiple regions, a challenge for Ryan and Saki has been finding time to socialize with the community they have fostered. They pride themselves on California Vibes and creating huge, over-the-top theme settings for most of the parties they host, but that commitment to detail commands a substantial portion of time. Wanting the best of bothmaintaining and growing social connections while serving their community with incredible experiences - is a fine balance, but Ryan and Saki are dreamers who make it happen.
Looking to the future, Ryan and Saki have big plans. Their mission, aside from providing Second LifeTM residents with the opportunity to socialize in a fun community, is to promote music, the arts, and charities. Their passion and skill are evident here. As an alternative to the common club setting, California Vibes offers bigthemed concert experiences with light shows, and hologram effects. Rather than distributing event flyers, they send out concert tickets, or event-specific appointment reminders for their experiences.
Ryan and Saki share a line from Tupac’s
California Love that they take to heart, “CALIFORNIA KNOWS HOW TO PARTY.”
these musical talents to the Second LifeTM community.
They’re planning a third region, to build rental properties within the California Vibes residential community, offering Second LifeTM residents the coastal California lifestyle.
Soon, California Vibes will offer opportunities for lesser-known DJs and vocal artists to highlight their talents. Ryan and Saki understand that there are countless undiscovered artists, and they hope to be able to provide venues to assist in introducing
Ryan and Saki also enjoy hosting festivals and charity events. Recently, they participated in Second LifeTM’s vital Relay for Life, raising money for cancer research.
While California Vibes is Ryan and Saki’s passion project, they are most proud of the community that has come together; one that started months before they officially opened the regions. They are profoundly grateful for the support from this community, as they take the time to slowly grow their group and server, and maintain a positive, supportive, and inclusive environment for all who join. The California Vibes community has become “one incredible tribe.” g
