DZIEŃ ARABSKI

– NAJWAŻNIEJSZE GONITWY

Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan – Nagroda Europy – G3 PA (2600 m, międzynarodowa kat. Sheikha Zayeda Bin Sultana Al Nahyana.

Al Khalediah Poland Cup – Listed PA (1600 m, międzynarodowa kat. A, 4-letnich i starszych arabów, pula nagród: 70 000 zł) Bieg dla koni 4 letnich i starszych arabów jest jednym z najważniejszych wydarzeń wyścigowej niedzieli. Gonitwa w sezonu 2019 została podniesiona do rangi Listed, wtedy też została umieszczona w międzynarodowym kalendarzu gonitw Pattern dla koni arabskich czystej krwi.

Nagroda Sabelliny (2000 m, kat.

ARABIAN HORSE DAY

– THE MOST IMPORTANT RACES

Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan – Nagroda Europy – G3 PA (2600 m, international cat. A, 4-year-old and older purebred arabians, prize money: 148 750 PLN) This race was introduced into Warsaw’s race calendar in 1985, as an international race of the highest category, in which polish arabians could confront their rivals from abroad. The race gained prestige when back in 2010 it was included into Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s World Arabian Horse Racing Festival. From that point on, many wonderful foreign arabians take part in this event regularly and with many successes.

Al Khalediah Poland Cup – Listed PA (1600 m, international race cat. A, 4-year-old and older purebred arabians, prize money: 70 000 PLN) Sprint run for 4-year-old and older purebred arabians is one of the most important events during racing Sunday. The race since season of 2019 has been raised to Listed rank, that is also when it has been placed in the international Pattern race calendar for purebred arabians.

PREZENTACJA KONI ZAPISANYCH DO

NAGRODY EUROPY

Janowski as to niezwykle twardy zawodnik.

NR3/2020

Bred in Poland bay is also a descendant of Amer’s son - Portmer. In breeding he also gave a derbist Severus and two nice mares: Brasilia and Severina. Incredibly interesting is the female line of Janow Podlaski’s representative. Botura has in its lineage number of big stars, like: Ofir, Wielki Szlem, Czort, Sambor, Sabellina, Europejczyk, Bandos or Comet. It’s no surprise then that the stallion can effectively compete even with French-bred arabians! The ace from Janow Podlaski is an incredibly tough contestant. He’s famous for the fact that he gets better as the season goes on and his domain is long distance races. At the age of four he came in second in Derby, after a phenomenal Shannon Queen and he claimed Wielki Szlem Stakes - he repeated this achievement a year later. He had a very successful season of 2019 - he came in second in the Figaro Stakes, Wielki Szlem Stakes and Europa Stakes (beaten only by Salam Al Khalediah), and in the fall he won the prestigious race for the Michałow Stakes. He started off this season quite successfully, however in the competitions that followed he didn’t maintain the same standard of excellence. It needs to be remembered that most frequently he “caught” his top shape particularly in August, therefore he might still surprise his higher-ranked competitors.

start number:2 name: AYMAN (FR), 6-year-old stallion origin: General – Basilic d’Elios / Elios de Carrere owner: Maria Hagman-Eriksson trainer: Maria Hagman-Eriksson jockey Michal Abik

The father of younger of the horses enrolled by the trainer from Sweden is the excellent General (son of Amer) who won the most important race in Europe, Qatar Arabian World Cup, twice in a row in years 2009-2010, as well as two different races or rank G1 and Qatar International Derby (G2). In breeding, General doesn’t give outstanding horses like Amer himself. In terms of capabilities however, Ayman seems to be superior to Afja’an. He proved to be much better in 4 out of 5 races which they both participated in this year. In June of 2019 on the swedish racecourse Bro Park Ayman defeated, after a fight, Salam Al Khalediah (1750 m), which doesn’t allow him to be ignored. On the other hand it needs to be remembered that this time he will race over a longer distance on the unknown racecourse.

NR3/2020

Newly made polish derbist is after another Amer’s son - Mared Al Sahra stallion, who perhaps didn’t give in breeding as many splendid horses as his father, but he passes on a lot of his talent. Moreover the 4-year-old comes from a valuable female lineage - his mother won 4 races on Służewiec Racecourse, including Oaks, and she is the sister of the Derby runner-up Wielki Damati the winner of a few category races ( i.e. Porównawcza Stakes). Wielki Dakris raced really well at the age of three, but the trainer Adam Wyrzyk announced that he will still improve. Indeed, the stallion developed and this year he entered an even higher level. He started his races from second place in the Stanisław Sałagaj Memorial, and next he acquired the Kabaret Stakes, defeating incredibly strong Russian Seiful Muliuk. The stallions fought all the way and Polish 4-year-old turned out to be stronger. He didn’t have much luck during the Janow Stakes race. From the start he had troubles with keeping up with the competition and even though he finished dynamically in his own style, he came in third. In the Derby he has shown however that he is the best polish-bred 4-year-old and without a doubt he deserved to participate in the Europa Stakes.

PRESENTATION OF HORSES

ENROLLED TO HEIKH ZAYED

BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN - EUROPE STAKES (G3 PA)

Author: Krzysztof Romaniuk Photos: Służewiec Racecourse, Nils Rosenkjaer

start number:4 name: AFJA’AN (QA), 8-year-old gelding origin: Amer – Noreen / Dormane owner: Maria Hagman-Eriksson trainer: Maria Hagman-Eriksson jockey Konrad Mazur His father Amer doesn’t need an introduction. This legendary stallion rose to fame in breeding, giving the largest amount of offspring which won G1 races (90). His influence in breeding Arabian racehorses is comparable to one, which Galileo has in case of Thoroughbreds. Interesting fact is that out of eight horses enrolled for this race, only three of them (Salam, Shadwan and Gatsby) do not have him in their pedigree. Noreen’s mother, in turn, is after recognized to be one of the best racing arabians in the world - Dormane. On the paper then Afja’an presents himself better than Ayman, however on the racetrack the other one has better ratings. Afja’an doesn’t really shine, especially in this season, and long distance might not be the most beneficial for him which is why he doesn’t seem to be a big threat.

GENERAL LADY 12

NR3/2020

She has an outstanding pedigree which only proves that her domain should be distances 1600-2000 m. She confirmed that while she raced on Służewiec racecourse, even though she managed to win races of cat. B: Bandos Stakes in 2018 and Figaro Stakes in 2019 on 2400 m. Her biggest success is victory in the Al Khalediah Cup in 2018 at 1600 m. She trained in France for a couple of months this year, but after two disappointing performances her owner decided to bring her back to Poland. The distance of Europa Stakes (2600 m) requires to rate her chances carefully, although in a slow-pace race at fast ground she might be a dark horse.

start number: 6 name: SHADWAN AL KHALEDIAH, 8-year-old stallion origin: Nashwan Al Khalediah – Quesche du Paon / Akbar owner: Polska AKF Sp. z o.o. trainer: Maciej Kacprzyk jockey Szczepan Mazur He’s the first representative of Polska AKF stable, which on Służewiec Racecourse had a series of wins. However, it must be remembered that the stallion hasn’t won the cat. A race, moreover the longest distance he won at was 2200 m. From this perspective, it may seem more sensible for Shadwan to participate in the Al Khalediah Cup. At the beginning of August he failed to compete with Seiful Muliuk, Dragon and Gatsby in the competition for the Figaro Stakes (2400 m), galloping on the straight with much difficulty.

numer startowy: 6 nazwa: SHADWAN AL KHALEDIAH, 8-letni ogier pochodzenie: Nashwan Al Khalediah – Quesche du Paon / Akbar właściciel: Polska AKF Sp. z o.o. trener: Maciej Kacprzyk jeździec: Szczepan Mazur

SHADWAN AL KHALEDIAH 13

A o Nagrody Białki i Sambora. Seifulowi Muliukowi. W sprzyjających warunkach stać go nawet na odniesienie zwycięstwa.

start number: 7 name: DRAGON, 5-year-old stallion origin: Dahess – Djaima / Nonius owner: Zbigniew Górski trainer: Maciej Janikowski jockey Alexander Reznikov

DRAGON 14

NR3/2020

He is the son of the greatest of the descendants of Amer. Dahess won 28 races in his career of which 13 G1 and he was recognized as the best Arabian horse in the world in 2007. In breeding rankings he is second only to his father. On his mother’s side lineage of Dragon also looks quite interesting - the mare with Russian roots has an admixture of blood of such great horses like Dormane and Nougatin. Therefore his brilliant career is not a surprise. The main drawback of the stallion is the difficulty of conducting him optimally in the race. As a 3-year-old he indisputably won his first 3 starts and when it seemed that he didn’t have any competition in his year - he lost races of cat. A - Białka Stakes and Sambor Stakes. He also suffered a sensational defeat at the beginning of the 2019 season, but he did win the next three races, winning the Janow Stakes and Derby. He came in 4th in last year’s Europa Stakes (8 lengths after Salam Al Khalediah). This year he came in second three times, succumbing to Shadwan, Salam and Russian stallion Seiful Muliuk. Under favourable conditions he can win.

start number: 8 name: GATSBY DE BOZOULS, 4-year-old stallion origin: Muguet de Pascade – Bab Al Shams / Barour de Cardonne owner: S.A.R.L. Mezagri trainer: Cornelia Fraisl jockey Kamil Grzybowski If it comes to his pedigree, in such a company he might be called a “Cinderella”. Muguet de de Pascade ran very little and with no accomplishments, his mother has no racing career, but she’s by quite good Barour de Cardonne. Just a month ago Cornelia Fraisl wouldn’t make the call to enroll him in such a prestigious race. Gatsby, in fact, he was at the top of his year at the age of three, however he didn’t acquire any success in category races (he got second place fivefold). In his trainer’s opinion he lacked ambition. This year he easily won a race of group II, but he lost significantly at higher level, i.a. with Shadwan (5 lengths) and Wielki Dakris (over 12 lengths). Although lately his racing started to improve. The stallion for sure has a great potential, moreover extending the distance seems to be in his favor. What confirms it is a convincing win in the race for the Kurozwęki Stakes and third place in Figaro Stakes race (right behind Dragon). His high form makes him a dark horse.

Wysoka forma czyni z niego czarnego konia.

NR3/2020

A z drugiej strony to on dogadał się z koniem, to on z nim wygrał najważniejszą gonitwę arabską.

I’M LOOKING

FOR BRIGHT

FUTURE AHEAD In recent years the horses prepared for starts at Wrocław’s Partynice have played an increasingly important role, not only at Służewiec, but also on the international arena. Trained by Michał Borkowski, Fazza Al Khalediah is returning to races in a good style after a year-long break and the remaining representatives of the trainer’s stable will compete for the most important stakes for Arabian horses in the country. AUTHOR: Annamaria Sobierajska PHOTOS: Służewiec Racecourse

We are halfway through the season, how do you rate your performances? Expectations were a bit higher, but still we are somewhere between the third and fifth place in the training ranking. Before the season, I thought that we would be in a better situation, especially in terms of competitions for 3-year-olds. It seemed that one of

them could show itself in the stakes, but unfortunately we were not successful. We had to go back to group races and fight in groups for good positions. What is the stake of young horses in your stable? Two-year-old horses are only just beginning their journey and these are usually horses that the trainers put high hopes for. Similar here, hopes are higher than results, at least for now. Admittedly, only three horses have raced so far. Two of them took paid places. One of them finished in an unpaid place, yet I still think that this one will be the best of them. I think he needs running. It seems that the two-year-old horses in my stable mature a little bit later and I don’t know if it will be possible this season yet, but they will develop further in the future. What are your thoughts after the performance of Fazza Al Khalediah in Deauville? Excitement and impressions are great as this was the first race after a long break. Some people didn’t believe at all that the horse would come to the start but he did. And he proved that he still wants to race. Of course, the place taken is not exactly what we expected. That was the downside of this trip, but I am happy with the race itself. He lacks some running and some training. At the end of the race he lacked oxygen, but in the next starts he will improve and show that he is still the leading Arabian horse in the world. There was some speculation online about how the jockey rode. As a trainer, are you satisfied with the rider and did he meet your expectations in terms of the tactics agreed upon earlier? I have a very good contact with the jockey. Maybe it somewhat translates into the fact that I am not fully objective in evaluating his mistakes, as everyone describes them. On the other hand, it was him who

My zaryzykowaliśmy i to się opłaciło.

managed to get along with the horse, he won the most important Arabian race. I truly can’t blame him for anything, because he promoted the horse. As long as he doesn’t make serious mistakes, with which we may disagree, I think that he will ride it. Of course this is the decision of the owners, but at this moment we are not planning any changes. Did the rider make any mistakes? The whole race is a series of mistakes, and whoever makes the least of them, wins. Now we are looking into the future. We will see how it goes in Paris. Can I risk to say that this race was meant purely for racing? Yes, first of all that was the goal and yes, it was meant to be that kind of a race. Fazza had a race in Belgium before Dubai, but that was just a “walk” and not a race in itself. Then he went to Dubai and was in good shape. However, due to the pandemic, he did not take part in the race. As if he lost it, now I can’t say, but after Dubai he practically had a break until the end of June. A year after the injury. And now he was supposed to race in Dubai, because that was what the owner and I had in mind. Of course he resumed training earlier, about a month and a half before the race. I thought it might be too short and that’s what happened, he ran out of oxygen, but more importantly, he did not lose

willingness and wanted to run. I am not satisfied with the result of the race, but I am satisfied with the race itself.

Every start of a horse like that, in Wrocław or Warsaw, offers experience which pays off in the next competitions. Thoroughbreds from our stable ran in Berlin and Dresden. Going abroad is a very valuable experience for me. Have you and the owners agreed a strategy for Fazza Al Khalediah? Will you change something in your training? Of course, the training is a bit different, because the horse suffered an injury, so we are sparing it a bit. Thanks to the fact that we were able to train on a green track, which was made available to us in Wrocław, where we work every day, we were able to check its capability already during the training. We also got a lot from the last race, which actually showed that we will probably run one more race before Paris. It will probably be at the beginning of September in BadenBaden (a Listed race) or a week later in Paris, a preparatory race before the most main race.

Pozwala to jednocześnie poprawić jakość naszych codziennych treningów.

From your experience how do horses trained in Poland perform in international races? Do the horses trained here have potential and should they race abroad? If you have a horse like Fazza it is a good idea to have a possibility like that and travel. We took a risk and it paid off. Every start of a horse like that, in Wrocław or Warsaw, offers experience which pays off in the next competitions. Thoroughbreds from our stable ran in Berlin and Dresden. Going abroad is a very valuable experience for me. It’s a pity that still so few horses go there, and if they go abroad, then after the first unsuccessful performance trainers or owners are discouraged and don’t want to race anymore. As a result, this is a closed community and we race only with each other, and thus we don’t know where we stand as trainers even when it comes to our part of Europe. From the training perspective, what are the benefits of taking part in competitions abroad?

First of all, it is a check where we stand on the international arena. We started to race half-bred horses in Wrocław and there was such a period that we kept winning everything on this track. At that moment I thought that it would be good to go to Warsaw and win the race. We also won a few races there. We haven’t won a big races at Służewiec yet, but I hope that the time will come too. If you plan your competition calendar well, you can go to Germany, for example, to check where you are as a trainer. This also allows you to improve the quality of the daily workouts. It gives an opportunity to change something in our daily routine, to learn a something new. August 30 is one of the most important days for Arabian horses at the Służewiec racecourse. What are your estimates for this day and the condition of your horses before the start in races? Our stable this year is full of Arabian horses. Maybe we didn’t win the most important stakes for Arabian horses, but we run in all the biggest races. In the Europe Stakes we will see General Lady from our stable, which is a bit mysterious. She was not very successful in France, but I hope that after returning to Poland she will perform well. She is a demanding horse. She is of such character that she must have a good day to run well. In the Al Khalediah Poland Cup we will see Anood Al Khalediah, who won last year. This season she ran three times, taking paid places, but that was not in her favourite races - at a distance of 2000 m and longer. This is a very good mare. I think she will prove herself. In the Białka Stakes we will see Mayar Al Khalediah who we had very high hopes for. In his last performance he lost to very good horses trained by Cornelia Fraisl and we hope he will be able to fight them in this race.

KONIE ARABSKIE

TRENOWANE W POLSCE

ARABIAN HORSES

TRAINED IN POLAND

KEEP PACE WITH FOREIGN RIVALS Arabian horses in Polish training show abroad that you have to take them into account. Trainer Maciej Kacprzyk strongly believes that they still have a lot to offer, and that this potential should be used by us, because we have something to be proud of. AUTHOR: Magdalena Komarek PHOTOS: Służewiec Racecourse archives, MK Racing

Of course, at such a high level, and with such leveled stakes, the seemingly details often play a decisive role as to how the race progresses. The track in Deauville was very flexible and it started raining before the race itself. These are not favorable conditions for Salam. Despite all of this, I am satisfied. This wasn’t the last race of his career and I believe he still has a lot to offer. My role now is to find the right races for him and I think Salam will still have a chance to show what he can do this season. How do you assess the performance of Salam Al Khaleidah and Szczepan Mazur? Did they your meet expectations? It’s hard to go for a race like this and not dream about winning, so I certainly hoped for more. Looking at how Salam’s career is developing and analyzing this year’s performances one could come to the conclusion that he is able to compete for the victory, which is what he did. Though he finished the race in 4th place, the style in which he competed confirms that it wasn’t a dream, but that this horse can afford to compete at the highest level. Considering his performance, on the basis of a handicap analysis, one could say that he finished the race in the right place, but the course of the race indicates that it could have been even better, which left me a little unsatisfied.

Though Salam finished the race in 4th place, the style in which he competed confirms that it wasn’t a dream, but that this horse can afford to compete at the highest level.

How is such a trip with horses planned? Is it a lot of stress for them and how much does it affect the training process right before the start? The first such long journeys abroad are pretty good lessons for horses. It is no longer an 8 minute trip from the stable to the racecourse and you have to carefully prepare the horse for it, but you also need to make a thorough plan. The journey is made up of many stages and is very tiring for the horse. However, what I always try to do is to organize it in a way that the journey is no longer than 8 hours. Salam endures the journeys much better now, but also our team draws conclusions with each trip and we are getting better prepared for them. In the ideal world we would probably fly by plane, but for the time being it is not within our reach and we try to do our best. This experience is important for both the horse and the whole team. Did you have a chance to compete at the Deauville course before or was this your first time? It was the first time both Salam and Szczepan had competed in Deauville. We’re learning and developing everything all the time, so we’ll certainly have more experience in the next races at this track. Szczepan is

Najprawdopodobniej pobiegnie Shadwan.

there were no horses from abroad either. Nevertheless I think that this is not his distance. We entered this year for the Europe Stakes only in case the trip to France was not possible due to the limitations related to the pandemic. Most likely, it is Shadwan who will race. He has a good start to the season behind him. He let us down a bit in the Figaro Stakes ending up in 4th place, but we will try, we are still in the game. As for the stakes, we’re still waiting as well. The cost of additional registration does not deter the best stables in the world, so it may turn out that someone else from abroad will participate. Ayman, from Sweden, is a good horse, the others are also at a rather high level. The distance is not good for us so it will be a difficult race for us, but you can surely expect that we will fight.

a very experienced rider and I really wanted a Polish jockey to ride the horse and also to get to know the next racecourse better. Salam, on the other hand, has little experience. His career started at the age of 5 and progressed slowly. At first no one expected him to develop to a level that would allow him to compete in G1. It is hard for me to tell what limits this horse has, maybe he still has a lot to offer. Last year you won the Europe Stakes. Are you prepared to win this year as well? How does the trainer assess the level of horses registered for this race? The problem with the Europe Stakes is that 2600 m race is not the optimal distance for either of the two best horses we have. Last year together with the owners we really wanted to win this race and we prepared Salam for it. He won by 7 lengths, it was quite an easy win, but

The first such long journeys abroad are pretty good lessons for horses. It is no longer an 8 minute trip from the stable to the racecourse and you have to carefully prepare the horse for it, but you also need to make a thorough plan. Do you have any plans to go abroad again this year? The COVID - 19 epidemic has caused a lot of disruption in the races, there are fewer of them and there is less money. Moreover, the level in the pattern-type races became more even and the differences between the different ranks started to diminish. For example, Mashhur Al Khalediah, who previously competed in G1, and now he compete in G3 in Belgium during the UAE President CUP, so the level is also very high now and the same applies to the lower ranks due to the high number of cancelled races. As far as our plans are concerned, we would like to participate in the 1600m race of the UAE President CUP series, which will take place at the Baden-Baden racecourse, on 6 September. It offers a good prize pool, so we will be signing up Salam for this race. Alternatively, we’ll be racing the same series at 1800m in Milan on 20 September. We still have plans to start at Qatar CUP on Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Longchamp, where we finished seventh last year. But I don’t want to go there just for a trip. We will only go there if Salam is in good shape and we can afford to dream of finishing in the top three. As far as Shadwan is concerned, he’s already been in a lot of races throughout his life. I like this horse very much and I don’t want to go beyond his strengths. First we’ll see how he does in the Europe Stakes. Maybe we will manage to get ready and take part in the Pisa CUP once again. However, I take all decisions concerning the trips on an ongoing basis, taking into account first of all the form and possibilities of the horses, so we will certainly still verify these plans.

formę i możliwości koni, więc jeszcze będziemy z pewnością weryfikować te plany.

In my opinion Arabian horses are a very strong asset of Polish races. We have really great potential to become a sort of a hub for Arabian horses in Europe. How trainer assess the potential of Arabian horses trained in Poland? I think that the level of Arabian races in Poland is very high. The trips of our horses are a proof of that, because we always make it to the competition, we have the opportunity to fight and we are some kind of threat to the competition. I would also like to pay special attention to horses of Polish breeding, which in their highest form are also able to get the so-called „black type”, that is to say, to find themselves in the top three in pattern-type races at a distances suitable for them. Such horses of Polish breeding as Wielki Dakris, Dragon, Bandolero or Hamal could easily try their strength abroad. In my opinion Arabian horses are a very strong asset of Polish races. We have really great potential to become a sort of a hub for Arabian horses in Europe. Our best jockeys ride Arabian horses, the best trainers keep them in training and there are some races for Arabian horses on the biggest racetrack every day. What’s more, our breeding is also at a high level, which can be illustrated by the successes of Mr. Zbigniew Górski, whose horses not only look great at races but are also sold at good prices abroad. The fact that Salam, Shadwan and especially Fazza race as much abroad as they do with Polish Arabian horses is a proof of great potential here.

POZWALAM MOIM KONIOM

I LET MY HORSES

FEEL COMFORTABLE Trainer Cornelia Fraisl presents a great form of her stable in the 2020 season. Out of 154 starts so far, the horses that she trains have recorded 24 victories and took 103 paid places in races. The second place in the training ranking and a strong representation of pure bred Arabian horses in the stable shows that horses trained in Poland have great determination and potential to be among the best. AUTHOR: Annamaria Sobierajska PHOTOS: Cornelia Fraisl, Tor Wyścigów Konnych Służewiec

A very good start to the season for your stable. Which of the horses you train do you have the greatest hopes for? We try to make sure that all horses that are trained in our stable have the opportunity to show their full potential. Nevertheless, as is the situation with every stable, there are horses that are predestined to participate in the most important races. One of them is Gatsby de Bozouls, who was already amongst the best ones at the age of three. This season he has already won twice and it is clear that extending the distance is highly beneficial for him. He has a difficult character and a lot depends on how he is ridden in the race, but he is a reliable horse. Out of the 3 year olds, Sjabahar ‚OA’ and Samonlau ‚OA’ definitely stand out. Both of these horses have already proven to be gifted in their debuts. What does the stable owe such a great shape of horses to? Since the beginning of the activity of the racing stable in Strzegom, we have tried to provide good and varied training conditions for the horses we train. In addition to the regular routine on the course, we have the opportunity to train in the field, paying particular attention to uphill training, as well as light, relaxing work in the forest. Each horse is paddocked every day, which ensures excellent recovery after races and training. The possibility of having a natural, free movement and direct contact with other horses has an excellent effect on their mentality. What chances do the horses stand to perform well in the Al Khalediah Poland Cup, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan - the Europe Award and the Białka Stakes? We hope that the horses we train will demonstrate their maximum potential, but the competition on a race day

as important as the Arabian Day will be very big. Guajok de Bozouls will be running for the first time off-race, but looking at his victories so far, we hope that he will play a part in the fight for good places. Gatsby de Bozouls has already proven his racing value many times. Should he manage to race his best, he should be a dangerous competitor. Sjabahar ‚OA’ and Samonlau ‚OA’ are horses that mature quite late, yet they showed that they want to aspire to be one of the better horses of the year in their first two starts already. They still lack a bit of experience, but you can see that they are willing to fight in the race.

W jaki sposób konie trafiły do Was pierwsze konie ze stajni De Bozouls?

How did the first horses from the De Bozouls stable get to you? For many years, horses of foreign owners have been trained in our stable. Through mutual acquaintances we have established cooperation with De Bozouls Stud, whose owner entrusted us with his horses for training. The majority of the horses in your stable are Pure Arabian horses, bred mainly abroad. Do you see an opportunity for your horses to compete abroad? The Arabian horse racing program in Poland gives you the possibility of regular competitions. Of course we would like to try our strengths in races abroad as well, but it is important that the competitions are selected according to the horses’ racing potential. Based on your experience, how do horses trained in Poland perform in international races? We had the opportunity to compete on race courses in Germany, Italy, Sweden, England and the conclusion was always similar - a good racehorse, in a well-chosen race has a good chance for a positive result. The most important thing is to be able to judge the strengths and make good choices.

Most of our clients are foreign people and entities who appreciate the benefits of training and participation in races in our country. The Polish Arabian horse racing program is one of the best in Europe and horses coming to train from other countries generate income for the whole industry. We believe that we should aim to popularize the possibilities of training and races in Poland as much as possible.

BANDOLERO

GODNIE REPREZENTUJE

BANDOLERO

WORTHILY REPRESENTS

HIS STUD FARM

Interview with Sergey Vasyutov, trainer of race horses in Janów Podlaski AUTHOR: Krzysztof Romaniuk PHOTOS: Służewiec Racecourse archives

You started your job as a trainer in Janowo Podlaskie merely three years ago but you can already boast numerous successes. Which ones are the most important to you? Without a doubt, Derby won in 2018 by Severus. This race is something extraordinary for everyone. I also perfectly recall the first race for the Blue Ribbon as a trainer. Bandolero took second place back then, losing only to the undefeated at that time Shannon Queen. A couple of weeks later, during meeting called Arabian Day, second place in the Europa Stakes, also right behind phenomenal Shannon Queen, took Shadad Athbah. That day was very successful for me because in another prestigious race, Al Khalediah Cup (1600 m), I triumphed on SS Mothill. These four horses served very well not only for the stud farm but also for me as a trainer. What is the further fate of these horses? Shahad Athbah and SS Mothill joined the breeding. I am convinced that the mare, who is the daughter of the phenomenal Amer, will give the beginning to a magnificent female lineage of racehorses. SS Mothill on the other hand, should bring new strength as a sire. He had a lot of speed and he stood out because of his extraordinary ambiton. Severus and Bandolero still race. The first one haven’t really found himself entirely after his injury back in the fall of 2018, but despite that he won last year’s prestigious Ofir Stakes. Bandolero has been worthily representing his stud farm during his entire career. He won long distance races for the Wielki Szlem Stakes

Bandolero has been worthily representing his stud farm during his entire career. He won long distance races for the Wielki Szlem Stakes (3000 m) twice in a row and last year he won the prestigious Michałów Stakes. He finished second in the Europa Stakes, lbeaten only by Salam Al Khalediah.

jesienią 2018 r., ale mimo to wygrał w ubiegłym roku prestiżowy wyścig o Nagrodę Ofira. Bandolero przez całą karierę godnie reprezentuje swoją stadninę. Dwa razy z rzędu wygrał długodystansowy bieg o Nagrodę Wielkiego Szlema (3000 m), a w ubiegłym roku zdobył cenną Nagrodę Michałowa.

(3000 m) twice in a row and last year he won the prestigious Michałów Stakes. He finished second in the Europa Stakes, lbeaten only by Salam Al Khalediah. Will Bandolero take part in Europa Stakes this year as well? Yes. Currently on the starting list there are 10 horses, but it’s very unlikely that all of them will take part in the race. I think that Bandolero will achieve his top shape exactly for that race, just as I predicted while I’ve been preparing the training plan. I really liked him in the preparation run for the Figaro Stakes. He did take 5th place, however, the result wasn’t the most important back then. On the straight he galloped very nicely and eagerly, which is a great sign for the upcoming race. I am convinced that we will be a serious threat to our opponents once again.

What other accomplishments are important to you from a trainer’s perspective? Even though it’s difficult for our horses to compete with the growing number of french-bred horses and arabians bred in Poland by the outstanding foreign stallions, I am glad that during each season we win many races for young arabian horses. Most of all we can boast undoubtedly the best arabians in exterior competition. It means that beautiful horses coming from lineage of champions and acquiring prestigious titles in shows, positively pass the test of bravery on the race track. It is a very important step in selection process of purebred arabians.

Osiągnięcia o wiele bardziej efektowne niż Europejczyka miał przede wszystkim wyhodowany w Michałowie Druid (ur. 1993 r.), którego ojcem był wicederbista Wojsław, a matką derbistka Dalida (1985). THE BEST POLISH ARABIAN

RACEHORSES IN HISTORY OF

SŁUŻEWIEC RACECOURSE

Author: Jan Zabieglik Photos: Służewiec Racecourse archive

In the history of Służewiec races for purebred arabian horses there were at least over a dozen individuals, who are remembered very well by the regulars of the racecourse. In the audience plebiscite announced last year for the 80th anniversary of Służewiec Racecourse, in the category “the best arabian horse” the biggest amount of votes went to the undefeated for 8 races Europejczyk from Janów Podlaski, trained by Maciej Janikowski. He won 5 races as a 3-year-old, including Sabellina Stakes (the stakes was held back then in the circle of 3-year-old and older horses on 1600 m distance) Sambor Stakes and Porównawcza Stakes (Criterium), and as a 4-year-old he won three races : Bandos Stakes, Janów Stakes and Derby. Vox populi, vox dei, so the choice must be respected, objectively speaking however at least a handful of

different horses had richer and greater careers. Sadly, an excellent streak of Europejczyk, son of the amazing El Paso stallion, who got sold to USA in 1981 for 1 mln USD (he was bought by a very well known american businessman, Armand Hammer) ended right after his third race at the age of 4, which was right after his triumph in Derby (in 1986). It is a pity that he couldn’t compete against The Soviet Union horses (the winner was Anchar from the famous stud in Tiersk) in the second edition of initiated a year prior Europa Stakes. Far more effective accomplishments had, most of all, bred in Michałów Druid (born in 1993), whose father was Derby runner-up Wojsław and his mother was Derby winner Dalida (1985). Trained by Dorota Kałuba and ridden in the grand majority of races (13 out of 15) by

Wśród ogierów janowski derbista i zwycięzca Nagrody Europy z 1988 roku Pamir dał trzech sukcesorów swojego wyścigowego talentu: Batyskafa (1994), Geparda (1995) i Gafala (2002), a ponadto jest dziadkiem Don Carlosa (2005).

“the king of the racecourse” Tomasz Dul acquired 13 victories and came in second twice. He lost only to Milet in the Białka Stakes race and at the end of his career in Porównawcza Stakes to a 3-year-old Wiliam, carrying 7 kg less. Druid being the only polish bred derbist, won also, both of them twice, Europa and Porównawcza Stakes (Criterium). Splending results of Druid caught the attention of Turks. They have decided to add him to their breeding (in the past they’ve bought Batyskaf, derbist from 1994 for 450 thousand USD) and during the Janowo auction in 2000 after a spectacular bidding they bought him for 500 thousand USD. Before he went there however, he left behind quite numerous offspring. from which the only one to follow his footsteps was trained by Anna Nieora-Tchkuaseli Gorec (from russian mother Gordaia), who won Derby (2003) and twice he won the Europa Stakes (2004-2005). Among the great mares, the incredible derby family of Sabellina from Janowo went down in history. In this case you could pick the Derby winner with your eyes closed,

before the horses started the race. She herself won in the season of 1958, giving rise to successes of her daughter Santa (1964). her brother Sabbat (1968), grandchildren - Sasanka (1972) and Sanos (1974) great-granddaughters Sarenka (1978) and Saszetka (1981) and great-greatgranddaughter - Sarmacja (1990). In turn, the achievement of Orla from 1966 has been repeated by her daughter Orgia (1975) and her born overseas great-granddaughter Orgia Fata (2007). Let us add that three of these mares : Orla, Sasanka and Orgia were “triple-crowned”, because they’ve won Derby, Oaks Stakes and during the same year, Porównawcza Stakes. Among stallions, janowo derbist and Europa Stakes winner from 1988 Pamir gave three successors of his racing talent : Batyskaf (1994), Gepard(1995) and Gafal(2002), furthermore he is the grandfather of Don Carlos (2005). It is worth to mention derbist from 1951, Alabaster (Bad Afas - Rozeta) from SK Nowy Dwór Breeding. His 2200 m racecourse record - 2’31” is unbeaten until this day!

Potrzeba jednak czasu, dużych nakładów finansowych i strategicznego działania, żeby móc konkurować z najlepszymi zagranicą w większym zakresie niż dzieje się to teraz.

ARABIAN HORSE

RACE MAP

Poland is strengthening its position on the map of Arabian horse racing industry year after year. There are stronger players on the scene of breeders and owners, who can help in the development of this sector. However, it takes time, large financial resources and a strategic action to be able to compete with the best abroad to a greater extent than it is happening now.

The article was written in cooperation with Michał Kurach PHOTOS: Służewiec Racecourse

Many Arabian horses from foreign breeding take part in races in our country. How do they get to Poland? Are there large foreign breeders on the Arabian horse market in Poland and what is the scale? We can find several different operation models.

Central management

Al Shahania owned by H.H. Cheik Mohammed Bin Khalif Al Thani, headquartered in Qatar, uses the following model for its business: they manage all horses around the world that have been bred by the stud and have not been sold. The headquarters are located in Qatar, where the offices and the main training center are located. This unit is responsible for key operations: breeding, marketing and racing. The horses that compete are actively divided between France and Qatar. At the beginning of Al Shahania’s operation in Europe, a herd was located in Great Britain, but due to very at-

tractive subsidies for horses born in France, almost all breeding is now being developed there. Julian Smart, one of the best trainers in the world, is responsible for the fantastic performance of Al Shahania owned horses, including stars like Gazwan (Amer x Arc de Ciel) or Ebraz (Amer x Massamarie). Two seasons count in terms of racing - in Qatar and Europe. The majority of races in the old continent are held in France, and the greatest prestige and money accompany the races that make up the Doha Triple Crown. Races sponsored by Qatar are Qatar International Stakes G1 1600m in Goodwood, followed by the Qatar Arabian World Cup G1 2000m in Longchamp, made famous due to the victory of Fazza AL Khalediah in 2018, and the final highlight of The Amir Sword G1 2400m in Doha. After the end of the season in the Middle East, the best horses and Julian Smart head back to France, where 2-3 races are usually held during the season. Young horses that

Dodatkowo H.H. Cheik Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani w 2017 roku zaoferował za darmo możliwość użycia jednego z najlepszych wyścigowych ogierów arabskich Assy (Amer x Margouia). Kilku hodowców z Polski skorzystało z tej hojnej oferty.

Stadnina Umm Qarn z kolei należy do brata właściciela Al Shahanii, Cheika Abdullaha Bin Khalifa Al Thani. To właśnie w Normandii stacjonują klacze i ogiery hodowlane Umm Qarn. We Francji następuje też pretre-

ning i trening młodych koni.

only just begin training are first taken to pre-training centers and then they are trained in French stables of coach F. Rohaut. Al Shahania has no direct links to Poland. However, several Polish breeders, including Zbigniew Górski, use Al Shahania stallions in breeding. Among the horses running on Polish courses are Wielki Dakris (Great Dakris), Dahra, Alnnajm or Ehssana. Additionally, in 2017 H.H. Cheik Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani offered to use one of the best Arabian race stallions of Assy (Amer x Margouia) for free. Several breeders from Poland took advantage of this generous offer.

Two main centers

The Umm Qarn stud in turn belongs to the brother of the owner of Al Shahania, Cheik Abdullah Bin Khalif Al Thani. It is from this stud that the famous Amer, the best racing sire of all time, comes. Umm Qarn is characterized by a different business model. It is based on two centers, which function equally all year round. Alban de Mieulle,

a French trainer and owner of Haras du Grand Courgeon stud in Normandy, is responsible for the breeding progress as well as for training the best horses in Qatar. It is in Normandy that Umm Qarn mares and breeding stallions are stationed. France is where young horses are being pretrained and then trained. The best horses stay in Qatar with their trainer Alban de Mieulle, and for the European season the whole thing moves to France. However, this year was the first time this was abandoned and the horses that start in Europe came alone and are looked after by their trainer Thomas Fourcy. This measure was taken due to the pandemic, but it certainly increases the profitability of the racing business and can be continued in future years. Poland races feature General Lady, a wonderful mare bred in Haras du Grand Courgeon. In addition to the horses General, Majd Al Arab, Tabarak and stallions Amer, there are also some other owned by Cheik Abdullah Bin Khalif Al Thani.

The Wathba Stud and HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan support Arabian horse racing around the world. Where Arabian horse races are held, the Wathba Stud brand is present by promoting and sponsoring the racing cycles. This year Poland will have five subsidized races as part of the Wathba Stallions Cup, and the Listed 2400m Comparative Award will be part of the UAE President Cup for the second time in a row.

Sambora i Orła.

Strong supportive measures

Wathba Stallions is a herd of stallions located in the United Arab Emirates. The real Arabian horse diamonds of this stud and Arabian horse breeding are: Munjiz (Kesberoy x Unchainedd Melody) and Mahabb (Tahar de Candelon x Joyzell); interestingly, there is a small addition of the blood of the Polish Arabian horses in the blood of both the stallions, from the outstanding Sambor and Orzeł (Eagle). In Europe race horses are managed by the YAS Horse Racing Management. Arabian horses of this racing stable are top performers in the world. The best ones are: Deryan (Mahabb x Haboob), Hayyan (Munjiz x Dahwa). Both the Wathba Stud Farm and race horses are owned by HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan. In addition, the G3 2600m Europe Stakes - the most important race of the season for pure bred Arabian horses has been supported for many years, which allows to attract guests from abroad and to increase the prestige of Polish racing.

A branch in Poland

Al Khalediah, a stud from Saudi Arabia, presented the most expansive approach to Poland. In 2008 a branch of the Saudi Arabian stud - Al Khalediah Poland was established in Nowe Wrońskie. It was then that the first horses came here from Saudi Arabia. Today there are almost a hundred of them and the number is still growing. The Polish branch focused strongly on show horses. However, the breeding of race horses is becoming more and more important. First of all it was based on the racing successes of Fazza Al Khalediah or Salam Al Khalediah. Saudi Arabia remains the headquarters of Al Khalediah, while Poland is an outpost for Europe, operating quite independently from the main stud farm. The whole breeding operation conducted by Al Khalediah has been moved to Poland from other European countries. This slowly stimulates the development of Polish Arabian horse racing. There are prizes sponsored by the farm (Al Khalediah Poland Cup in Służewiec), trainers gain good horses that enable them to show themselves abroad (among others Michał Borkowski, Maciej Kacprzyk). An interesting offer of stallions appeared last year. Let’s hope that in the future Polish breeders will be able to use Fazza or Salam Al Khalediah as a sire and Al Kalediah Poland sp. z o. o. stud will be an integral part of Polish breeding. This may happen by raising the bar high for other breeders and owners, but also by using the position of the “stronger one” to support smaller breeders, so that in a few years’ time we can again enjoy the victory in the Qatar Arabian World Cup, except with a horse bred in Poland this time.
