ery many congratulations to Richard, Helen, Cathrine and the large number of hard working volunteers who have brought the Town Hall Restoration Project to such a successful conclusion.

It has been a lengthy, but hugely worthwhile struggle. Now Great Torrington has a community building of great splendour and prestige of which it can be immensely proud.

It is now up to every one of us to make good use of it so that its future is assured. Well done to all involved!

Lord Clinton Officially Opens The Great Torrington Town & Community Hall

O

n 29th March I was honoured to welcome Lord and Lady Clinton for the Official Opening of the Town Hall. Lord Clinton has taken a great interest in our project, visiting the building during the various stages of repair, and it was lovely to be able to show him round now the refurbishment has been completed.

This day was an opportunity to thank our funders, large and small, together with many local organisations and celebrate this momentous occasion. A special presentation of an engraved Dartington Tankard was made to Rob Johns, the Site Manager, who worked tirelessly with his team to finish the project for the Trustees.

Our Open Day on the 30th March was a great success, with over 100 people coming to look at the work which has been done, and we have already taken bookings for future weddings.

It has been lovely to hear all the stories from people who remember using the Hall over 60 years ago, and are looking forward to seeing it back in use. If you didn’t have a chance to look around please let me know, and I will be delighted to arrange a visit.

Finally, now we are open we would be pleased to hear from you if you would be interested in becoming a Trustee or Advisor, as we move to the next stage of our development. Please contact me for an informal discussion.

Great Torrington Museum is now open for the summer season. Dates and times at the end of the article.

We must say a very big thank you to the Cavaliers for all their hard work in painting the reception and back hall and stair well of the museum. It all looks so very bright and clean.

I expect by now many of you will have seen the wonderful book of the History Of Torrington, written by Dr Hugh Reed, and put together for publishing by Rod Teasdale. On Saturday 4th May in the morning, Hugh will be in the Museum for a book signing and is kindly donating all the proceeds from sales of the book to the Museum, which will be used to have the Archive digitalized. The Museum is entirely grateful for this very generous and on-going donation, and the professionalism it will give to the archive, which has been collected over many years by Sue Scrutton.

The Museum is arranging some talks in the Market House during the summer season; details will be in the next Crier, and also in the window of the Museum.

WWII GI’s in Torrington Throughout the summer there are going to be many Devon D-Day commemorations, and the Museum feels it would be great to celebrate the GI’s in Torrington during WWII, with photos and stories. I am hoping that someone

veryone is welcome to come along to the May Fair Flower Festival in the Parish Church 10am - 5pm Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th May. There will be lots of displays on the theme ‘Times and Seasons’ plus some marking notable anniversaries in 2019. Entry is free and refreshments - tea, coffee, cake and light lunches will be available.

On Friday 3rd May we will have an informative display with pictures detailing the work that has been done to the tower and spire. Once again may I thank everyone for their patience and understanding whilst the work has been carried out. There are still a few minor jobs to be completed over the next few weeks and months, and we hope that the bells can be rung again at Christmas time when the mortar has settled and hardened. Now that the scaffolding and building equipment has been removed from the Churchyard, work can begin to restore the ground to its former splendour.

At 7pm on Friday 3rd May we are having a May Fair Organ Recital, given by Peter Stevens from Westminster Cathedral. Entry is free and there will be a retiring collection. Do come along to hear the magnificent Fr. Willis organ - one of the finest instruments in the South West.

On Friday 10th and Saturday 11th May the Parish Church is holding a Pop-Up shop in the Town Hall Undercroft and following on from this, the shop will move to 5, South Street (the former Computer shop). If you are thinking of having a spring clean, we would be very pleased to accept items for our Pop-Up shop. Thank you.

“...the Museum feels it would be great to celebrate the GI’s in Torrington during WWII” Torrington for three months in 1944. We have a book in the Museum of pictures taken during their stay. There were three ladies who acted as hostesses during their stay; Mrs M.E. Grantham, Mrs Nora Fiddian and Miss Beatrice Hocking. The Mayor at the time was Mr Sandford. The three hostesses were instrumental in making the GI’s stay in Torrington a very pleasant one, including at the dances

in the Town Hall, where they became acquainted with the Hocky- Pocky!

Torrington-Roscoff Exchange Group

T

he group is now finalising plans for our trip to Roscoff in August, the highlight of which will be the town’s annual twoday Fête de L’Oignon. While the onion festival is important for Roscoff and surrounds, it is small beer compared with many other events in Brittany. In nearby Morlaix, the Panoramas Festival, held in April, showcases some of the best acts on the contemporary music scene. It also serves as curtain raiser to the area’s summer festival season which is bound to include fest nozou, the traditional Breton night festivals.

At the end of April, hard on the heels of Panoramas, comes a food-themed festival: the Fête de la Coquille Saint-Jacques or, rather more prosaically in English, the Scallop Festival. If seafood is not your thing, there is plenty of music and street entertainment to enjoy as you help the locals celebrate the end of the fishing season. If sustainability is a concern, have no worries: fishing is highly restricted to protect the species, which is why three fishing ports take turns each year to host the event.

If history and culture are more your thing, there is plenty to choose from. Dinan is the place to be in July for the Fête des Remparts (Ramparts Festival), where medieval knights, resplendent in armour and colourful surcoats, parade through the streets on caparisoned chargers, and young and old are encouraged to join in the role play.

In August in Saint Gelvin, central Brittany, the Bon-Repos Abbey becomes a stage after nightfall for a retelling of local history going back to Neolithic times.

This takes place through a stunning sound and light show, or son et lumière - that particular brand of spectacle that the French do so well.

Rolle Canal Summer Walks Start Again in May

T

his summer’s programme of guided walks associated with the Rolle Canal starts on Sunday 12th May, featuring the site of the Inclined Plane at Ridd, near Annery Kiln, Weare Giffard. This is the place where the canal boats, after being loaded with coal and limestone brought in from the estuary through the sea lock, were hauled on wheels up a steep slope to the upper level of the canal which continued through to the lime kilns at Rowes Moor, up stream of Torrington.

The walk takes in the modern flood defences at Annery Kiln and follows the canal course for a hundred yards over rough grassland beside the salt-marsh to the lower basin at the foot of the incline. The inclined plane itself, and its working mechanism, have been largely destroyed by the building of the railway embankment that now carries the Tarka Trail, but a smooth new path leads up to the Trail from where we can see the top of the underground chamber which housed the giant water wheel that once provided the power to haul the boats up the slope.

Spring flowers are abundant along the Tarka Trail, and in the dry canal basin where Early Purple Orchids and Twayblades are usually to be found.

The meeting point is at Annery Kiln, by Halfpenny Bridge on the Weare Giffard to Bideford road at 2:30pm on Sunday 12th May. The distance to walk is little over a mile and is on surfaced paths apart from about a hundred yards of rough grass, which may be wet if there has been rain. Keen walkers or cyclists can of course come by the Tarka Trail from Bideford or Torrington, turning off at the Weare Giffard exit to reach the start.

These guided walks are organised by the Rolle Canal and Northern Devon Waterways Society, who will appreciate a donation of £2 per person towards the costs of on-going volunteer restoration works on the canal. aking place this year on Saturday 18th May, Nightwalk is a ladiesonly walk along the Tarka Trail, with over 1,000 women stepping out to support the hospice.

Nightwalk 2019 will have a ‘back to the 80s’ theme with related party areas and entertainment on the Trail, including 80s dance routines (at Fremington Quay), Babycham stations, 80s stiltwalkers, and more.

Commons Fisheries Report

T

orrington Commons Waters provide free fishing for people on the Torrington Electoral Roll only. This is the Law! Under the 1889 Commons Act any outsider who fishes our waters commits an offence under the Theft Act. Our Fishery Access Project is designed to enable elderly, and partly disabled anglers to have safe access to fish our stretch of the River Torridge, which is normally dangerous due to steep, slippery clay banks and tangled tree roots.

Frequency of floods over recent months have held up completion but we are now almost done. These steps are a popular and valuable improvement to our river and have been financed by a grant from The Angling Trust. Although other visitors to the Commons will no doubt use the steps and the new riverside seats, please remember to give priority to anglers, they paid for them!

Other Fishery news is that several salmon have been caught upstream of our water on the Torridge, some over 10lbs in weight. These fish cleared Beam Weir last October and passed through our water, which (we hope), due to our efforts, is now almost pollution free. The only exception is for clay discharges from Peters Marland and we hope to publish good news on that issue in the near future.

Torrington Community Wellbeing Event The Plough Arts Centre Thursday June 6th 2-5pm

e are celebrating the joy of volunteering and the difference it makes locally. Part of National Volunteers Week, this free event wants to say thank you for the fantastic contribution volunteers make to Torrington and the surrounding villages. We want to spotlight the huge array of wonderful community groups and projects on offer and show how they improve individuals’ wellbeing as well as that of the whole community.

Feeling actively involved and knowing there is help available when you need it makes us all feel stronger and more confident. This free event offers a brilliant opportunity for all ages to come along, visit lots of community stands, chat to others and learn about the many creative volunteering opportunities and local services on offer. There will be entertainment plus practical and fun activities and free cream teas.

The event is organised by TTVS, West Devon CVS, The Plough Arts Centre and the National Lottery funded Transitions Wiser£money project.

Hugh Reed, son of J B Reed, late Wool and Agricultural Merchant of Staple Vale, Torrington, actually lived

and worked as a Veterinary Surgeon for fifty years in other parts of the country, but returned to his ‘roots’ in 2014 and has since set about writing this useful and enlightening book. He has never lost his love affair with the South-West, or his interest in the working lives of his forebears. His family were great hoarders, so Hugh has had a wealth of records and memorabilia upon which to draw. He regularly receives requests for talks to local history groups, and furnishes them with many fascinating facts.

This newly published book ‘A Brief History of Torrington’ deals with topics such as buildings, people, schools and past industries and has one page per topic, with bullet points to give you all the information you need, quickly and clearly. Included in the book is a street map of Great Torrington in 1646, drawn and recreated by Philip Dixon; also, the famous Map of Devon charted by Benjamin Donne of Bideford in 1765.

Great Torrington Remembers Every Man Private William Henry Slee

A

number of Torrington soldiers fought with the 8th Devonshire Battalion, which would continue with William Slee. He was born in the Holsworthy parish in 1897 and was the son of Frederick William and Elizabeth Ann Slee. His father had a number of occupations listed through the years; the first shown on William’s baptism record. The family were living at Landcross at the time and the record shows Frederick as a farmer.

Within a few years in 1901, the family had moved to 20 Castle Street, Great Torrington.

This time, Frederick, who was born in the town, is recorded as an ‘auctioneer’s clerk’. As well as Elizabeth, the household is completed with William’s siblings, Agnes, Frederick and Florence, as well as servant Lucy Harris. By 1905, William was enrolled in the Great Torrington Council School for boys.

The final profession attributed to father, Frederick, is in the 1911 census where he is recorded as a ‘dairyman and cake merchant’, with his wife acting as ‘assisting in the business’. Little has changed regards to the family’s location and they are still residing at 20 Castle Street. The children in the household, including William, and which also now includes the youngest addition, Harold, are all of school age.

At the outset of war William enlisted with the 8th Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. Although enlisting in Exeter, his actual residence at the time is

recorded as Ilfracombe. We know that he had already seen action and had been wounded in the summer of 1917.

However, William would see far worse action as the 8th Battalion entered into the Battle of Passchendaele.

The battle had soon became mired and fell into a boggy stalemate. The conditions by the end of October had become atrocious.

Any chance of a rapid advance, in order to overwhelm the enemy positions, had evaporated as the terrain between the opposing trenches was virtually impassable at any reasonable speed. Despite these odds, a further attack was ordered regardless of the conditions.

On 24th October 1917 the 8th Devons moved into their new positions close to the front, ready for the ‘off’ in the early hours of 26th October. Even before the push came, on that morning there were new obstacles; German artillery fire had increased in ferocity and the rain started again in earnest. At zero hour, as predicted, the going was slow and this made perfect targets for the machine guns in the German pillboxes. Despite this, the 8th Devons were able to make reasonable progress. As the day wore on the relentless German opposition from machine gun fire, bombardment and counter attack, aided by the slow going terrain, depleted the ranks of the 8th Devons. At 8pm the Devons, as well as the rest of the beleaguered 20th Brigade, were relieved. Although the regiment had seen much fighting over their time

in France, this would be their toughest task and greatest casualty toll. In all, 127 were dead or missing with a further 131 missing.

Among the dead that day was William Slee. His death was reported the following month after his family had been notified of the news. He was just 19 years of age. The North Devon reported that “He was a young fellow with the greatest of promise, and he was held in the highest esteem in Torrington and district”. At the time of his death, his mother’s address is recorded as 39 Boston Road, Horfield, Bristol. William’s headstone can be found at the Hooge Crater Cemetery at West Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Floral Wedding Festival

A

Floral Wedding Festival will be held at St Peter’s Dowland, Nr Dolton, EX19 8PB on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June from 10.30am-7pm.

The Church will be decorated in a wedding theme of beautiful floral arrangements, and there will be a collection of wedding dresses from over the last 60 years, all having a Dowland connection.

There will also be craft, plant and produce stalls and refreshments.

Admission is free but donations will be gratefully received for St. Peter’s.

he tulips are now adding colour to the flower bed at the junction of Well St and New Road, and all the plants we put in last May that struggled in last summer’s dry, have come on well in the mild winter. We were out in force last Monday planting up some donations from RHS Rosemoor, and were delighted by the comments made by passers-by. Certainly the bed livens up an otherwise drab spot. We are cautiously optimistic that the bed will look good when the SW in Bloom Judges come round in July.

Our April meeting was held in the newly-opened Town Hall, where we entertained gardening clubs from around North Devon to a Quiz and refreshments provided by members.

Everyone was most impressed with the rooms and the facilities all worked very well. The team from Chumleigh won the cup, with Torrington and Winkleigh hard on their heels.

We meet again on Tuesday 7th May in our usual location: the Methodist hall at 7.30pm. Our speaker will be Sally Nex, who writes a regular column in the RHS The Garden magazine. Her subject will be: ‘Slugs, Snails and other Garden Ogres’. From June we shall move to our summer programme of garden visits. Visitors and new members are most welcome.

We have our ‘bands’ provisionally booked for the festival and will let everyone know the line up soon!

We have also provisionally booked a special musical treat: Trefor Smith, an internationally renowned classical pianist who will be playing over the weekend at St Michaels and All Angels Church.

Higher Beings will be demonstrating and giving children the opportunity to have a go at circus skills and we are delighted the Winkleigh Morris dancers have also agreed to join us. We are continuing to look for acts and events which cover the strands of ‘art, music and heritage, with a focus on encouraging and celebrating local talent to get involved.

Auction Report The Bling’s the Thing!

T

he 23rd March sale was without doubt, the best yet in terms of quality of lots and prices achieved!

Two areas really performed well, with vintage vinyl albums once again showing that Torrington has a real desire to relive the glory days of rock. Great Torrington Auctions was graced with a huge collection of 1960’s and 70’s rock LPs that (separated into several lots) achieved hundreds of pounds. So once again, let me give a huge call out to the people of Torrington to check those old boxes of records in the loft – you could be storing a relative fortune! If you have any of the major rock bands of that time era (not classical, easy listening or jazz) then bring them along to our free appraisal days!

Undoubtedly though, the special jewellery section at the end of the sale was the highlight of the last auction.

Mostly from a single estate, 18ct and 9ct gold chains, diamond earrings, pendants and rings, Cartier and Raymond Weil watches – all had enthusiastic buyers waiting to the very end to bid on some superb jewellery with some very respectable bids achieved! Check your drawers for those forgotten jewellery items – there will be eager buyers waiting!

Just a quick reminder that we do not accept large furniture items, but are happy to auction smaller pieces.

Great Torrington Rack Park Community Project

F

ollowing on from last year’s improvements of Rack Park, the work continues this year.

On Friday 15th February, Dave and I, our two first year RHS Rosemoor apprentices Giselle and Harry, along with Ollie and Tim who worked on the project last year, spent the day tidying and preparing for the next phase of improvements. The two square borders were weeded and mulched with compost and the overgrown shrub borders were cut back, stumps removed and brambles, ivy and general debris cleared. A start was made on the path edges and plans for future work discussed.

Friday 22nd March saw the above team back, ably assisted by Karen and Beverly from the Neighbourhood Chaplains. The two shrub borders were dug over, removing all unwanted debris and a new edge created. A topping of compost was added in preparation of the new plantings to enrich the clay soil. With the help of a donation from Torrington in Bloom (TIB), 550 Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) were purchased and have been planted in the upper two entrance corners; these will partner the existing Crocus and produce a fine late winter display. The apple trees have been pruned for us by volunteer Derek Thorp,and our apprentices have enlarged the tree circles, weeded them and applied a mulch of wood bark to suppress weed growth. The path edges have been completed and a trailer load of debris removed.

Our four apprentices were tasked with choosing a selection of hardy, summer flowering shrubs, including Cistus ‘Snow Fire’ AGM, Philadelphus ‘Belle Étoile’ AGM and Ceanothus ‘Burkwoodii’ AGM planted in the shrub borders in early April.

These have been purchased from the above TIB grant. If you are passing and we are at work, feel free to say hello and have a chat.

abulous Freddie reporting in, with apologies for my absence last month. Busy month in the rescue with five new dogs arriving and looking for their new homes: Beautiful Billy a very handsome black lurcher; Stunning Stanley, another handsome lurcher; Ralph the Rascal who is a lively Jack Russell and Darcy, a very timid cockerpoo. They are all now in our new on site facilities, which were officially opened by representatives from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home who have sponsored part of the building. We are very proud to have been chosen by Battersea as one of their Animal Partners, a new scheme launched by them to help smaller rescues and drive up animal welfare standards. It doesn’t mean the rescue has been taken over by them, and it will still operate independently, it just means that we have access to some of their training facilities and support which is fantastic.

The other amazing news is that K9Focus has been selected as one of only three finalists in the country for the 2019 Petplan Charity Team of the Year award. We actually won this in 2015, and so to reach the final for a second time is wonderful; especially knowing no organisation has ever reached the final twice. Fingers crossed! Our volunteers juggle, friends, family and work in order to help so many dogs and people. Now that we have dogs on site we are looking for more volunteers who may be able to help at the kennels during the week. If you do fancy joining our rescue (and obviously getting cuddles with me) then please email Aunty Lynne at lynne@k9focus.co.uk – it is fun!

Talking of fun, we will be having a sponsored dog walk on Saturday 25th May at the lovely Tapeley Park. Registration is only £5, for which you will get a rosette on completion, together with a purple bandana for your furby. There is no need to get sponsors, but if you want to then obviously all funds will go to help more dogs like me have a secure future. t our March meeting Diane Lee gave a fascinating talk on medicinal plants and herbal medicines. Our native wildlife can tell us so much if we watch them more closely.

In April Bernadette Sluggett gave an informative talk on baking for shows with hints on judging. Members were encouraged to bring along a baked item for comments.

There will now be stiff competition for the ‘best in show’ at our annual garden and produce show in September.

In May we welcome Mike Stephens who will give us an insight into easy and unusual plants to grow, to look at and fun to cook. With extremes in the weather patterns of late, this is useful for our part of North Devon.

June and July sees the group on garden visits, hopefully enjoying the long summer evenings. A bring and share supper/BBQ is planned for August, and our main event in September is the garden and produce show.

We meet every third Monday in the month at 7.30pm in the Milton Damerel Parish Hall, Tor View, Holsworthy EX22 7NR. Light refreshments are also provided. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

What is Lungworm in Dogs?

L

ungworm is a type of parasitic worm, called Angiostrongylus Vasorum, which can affect dogs, foxes and badgers. It lives in the heart and blood vessels that supply the lungs.

Lungworm is described as an “emerging” disease, which means it’s gradually becoming more common.

Traditionally, lungworm only appeared in certain “hot spots” in the south of England, but in recent years it has been identified in dogs in most of the UK. It’s unclear exactly what’s causing lungworm to spread — and that of other parasites such as ticks — but increased movement of pets around the country, as well as increasing contact between wildlife and the urban environment, is thought to have played a part.

What causes lungworm in dogs?

Unlike many other diseases, lungworm is not passed from dog to dog. The worm grows and develops in slugs and snails, and dogs become infected from eating these in the garden or out on walks. Infection can, in the most extreme cases, cause death.

Not every snail or slug carries the worm, and it’s much more common in southern parts of England than the rest of the UK. However, if your pet tends to eat snails or slugs, they are at risk.

Ask your vet about the most common parasites in your area.

Diagnosing lungworm can be difficult as it relies on finding evidence of worms in either the windpipe or faeces. To complicate matters, not finding the

worms does not necessarily mean your dog is not infected.

Your vet is likely to carry out a number of diagnostic tests, such as taking blood and stool samples to see if any eggs or larvae are present. They may also conduct a chest x-ray or a bronchoscopy (camera down the windpipe).

What is fox lungworm?

Another type of lungworm — called Capillaria aerophila — that’s most commonly found in the airways of foxes, can also infect dogs. Dogs typically become infected by drinking water or

eating food that’s been contaminated with the worms’ eggs. These eggs typically hatch in the infected dog’s intestine before the larvae make their way into the lungs, causing coughing, persistent sneezing, and nasal discharge. It can take 40 days for the larvae to mature. Thankfully, treatment with antiparasitic medication is usually effective.

Lungworm treatment Typically, lungworm does not require invasive or costly treatment if caught early. Killing the worm is relatively straightforward, and should only require a change in your regular parasite routine. This might be as simple as changing from one product to another. However, if the symptoms are advanced or the level of infection is severe there is a greater likelihood of permanent damage.

Lungworm prevention We would always recommend adding lungworm prevention treatment into your regular worming routine.

Speak to your daytime vet about lungworm treatment and prevention from lungworm and, if you’re unsure how ‘at risk’ your dog might be, seek advice from your vet. They’ll know how common the problem is in your area and put in place the most appropriate plan for you and your pet. If you see slugs or snails in your garden, or in the areas you walk your dog, be vigilant and try to prevent your dog from swallowing them.

T

here are many ways in which we gardeners can conserve water, and after last year’s scorching summer, we need to take steps to alleviate any possible shortages this year (which probably means we’ll have a washout of a summer!). Whatever happens, we can all make a few changes to how we conserve water and save ourselves a lot of time and energy.

When planting in containers or hanging baskets, consider mixing the compost with water saving crystals.

These really do work by retaining moisture and therefore, reducing the need to water frequently.

However, there are other ways and one is to use old bits of carpet (carpet side up) at the bottom of the planter – soak the material really well first. Old towelling, thick cardboard, or even old clothes are good alternatives and cost nothing!

Mulching is an excellent way of reducing evaporation from the soil.

Almost any material can act as a mulch, but only mulch when the soil is nice and moist.

Take care when watering to choose a time of day when it’s cooler, first thing in the morning is best, otherwise during the evening. Sometimes, at the hottest time of the day, plants may droop; this doesn’t necessarily mean that they need

watering and, in fact, watering then may be detrimental to the plant’s natural instincts. Plants sometimes ‘take a siesta’ and shut down temporarily, only to perk up once the heat of the day is gone – then you can give them a good drink.

It is not necessary to water every day, most plants benefit more from a good soaking once or twice a week rather than a daily sprinkle.

Not watering too frequently will encourage roots to venture deeper into the soil and find the moisture there, (baskets and shallow containers being the exception).

When planting a new plant, make sure the plant is well watered, dig your planting hole to the appropriate depth, water therein and let the water soak away. Remove plant from the pot, place in the planting hole, water again and then replace the soil. Do not water the top soil because a wet surface draws up moisture from below and evaporation will be speeded up.

Water butts fixed to downpipes from the roofs of your house, shed or greenhouse will fill quickly after a downpour, rainwater is far better for your plants than tap water.

etrockstowe’s Baxter Hall is proud to announce it will be hosting its fourth annual beer festival in May this year.

Following three successful years, the organisers are hoping to appeal again to all real ale fans, with a selection of local beers and ciders.

The Beer Festival will take place on Saturday 25th May. Doors open at 2pm and last orders will be called at 8pm. In additional to ales and ciders there will be soft drinks, snacks, pasties and a barbecue. Come and sample the best of the south west in a relaxed and friendly setting with fellow real ale lovers. There is a large car park and a children’s play area. Or travel by bike or foot making the most of our beautiful local countryside and proximity to the Tarka Trail.

This year the small team of organisers have decided that any profit will be donated to the Baxter Hall roof appeal.

The Baxter Hall (opposite the Laurels Pub) is the hub of village life providing a venue for the skittles league, clubs and society meetings, sports and relaxation, family gatherings and social events.

Unfortunately the roof needs serious attention which is going to be very costly.

I

t’s hard to miss the wonderful abundance of flora around the Commons this month, with a particularly impressive spot featuring native bluebells and early purple orchids along the canal path. There are, of course, plenty of special places to be found as you wander the many paths, and also notice the mammals, and the birdlife as they busy themselves nesting, feeding and diving for insects.

As Conservators, part of our raison d’être is to enhance and protect the ecological aspect of the Commons and we are trying to do what we can to aid both flora and fauna. Land management is vital; enabling new plants to blossom to attract insects which, in turn, attracts birdlife. In the last Crier we explained how work will be undertaken with the aid of our newly created Management Plan, currently out for public consultation.

Above Commons Lake for example, you will see an area that’s been cleared allowing a variety of flora to emerge; including Devon violets, foxgloves, speedwell and blue cornflowers. Adders, a protected species, have also been seen and in fact, overall, seem to be thriving. We are closely monitoring trees for signs of ash die-back and other diseases, and of course taking appropriate measures. We’ve also erected some new nest boxes, made by Keith Sheppard with wood donated by Tamar Trading; a further example of the community aiding the great asset that Torrington holds.

Talking of global challenges it was encouraging to read the recent report from Butterfly Conservation (BC); 2018

was a golden summer for butterflies, with more than two-thirds of British butterfly species seen in higher numbers than in 2017, and of late I have seen a greater number and a wider variety of butterflies on the Commons. We are trying to assist with cutting the butterfly rides on the slope below the golf course, where rare pearl bordered fritillary need patchworks of violets and bracken.

You may have noticed the large lake down below the Bowling Green seems to be fuller than usual. This is simply because there’s been damage to the overflow pipe, but just as soon as there is some natural drainage, we will institute repairs to ensure water returns to its usual level.

In the past we’ve mentioned fly tipping on the Commons and unbelievably this blight continues. Very recently, a load of black plastic was dumped near Barmaid’s Path, and old carpet at Quiet Possession. This requires our hard-working staff to clear and remove the offending material to Deep Moor, incurring unnecessary time and expense.

Absolutely no excuse for this. It only requires those with such unwanted items to take them a short distance to the amenity centre.

Another request, albeit in a very different vein. Flowers are sometimes left, for example, by benches with a memorial plaque to remember loved ones. Could we respectfully ask that these floral tributes are laid without non-

compostable plastic wrapping which is environmentally unsound.

It’s not always realised that the Commons, a registered charity, receive virtually no official funding.

Conservators work hard year-round to raise funds so that with the Friends, we keep the Commons looking good, and hopefully winning yet more awards. We are holding a number of fund-raising activities in the coming months; on 28th July at the Old Bowling Green join us for a ‘Wild’n’Woolly’ day, complete with alpacas, sheep, and craft stalls. Looking further ahead, 12th October, we’re holding an Auction of Promises, and I would ask if anyone could come forward with any offers to auction to contact Sue on 07885 510 400. More on these in subsequent months.

Of course, the significant event for Torrington this month is May Fair. The Commons feature in the historic May Fair in that gorse is cut to decorate the town, and the may blossom being flowers of the hawthorn tree; the carnival starts from the Old Bowling Green, and we have the Round the Tree race on the Commons.

e’ve all heard of the benefits of Pilates, but do you actually know what it is, how it’s taught and what to look for in a good teacher?

Here at LB Movement there are three levels of instruction: 1. Private 1-1 tuition - this is the most precise form of instruction, and is best for those who are recovering from injury, need an assessment or just need a little extra help. 2. Pilates Studio Equipment sessions - these are taught using specialist Pilates reformers and equipment with up to four people. Your session is designed around your needs, but with other clients at the same time. 3. Matwork classes in small groups of no more than 12, a general class aimed at addressing common postural problems through a series of corrective exercises, beginner to advanced.

A good teacher will be happy to tell you where they trained, how long their training was, and what experience they have. As a general rule it takes a minimum of a year through face-to-face training and mentorship to qualify to be a basic Matwork teacher, and up to five years to become comprehensively trained in the equipment. Joseph Pilates used to invent his best exercises from his clients,by working the exercise around the client! Pilates is renowned for its ability to improve movement and reduce pain when taught correctly. Your teacher should be walking around and correcting when necessary. I have been teaching the piano for several years with pupils of all ages, varying talents and abilities. I teach absolute beginners and those who have had lessons in the past but have lapsed.

You are never too old to give it a go and for me, it is all about playing for pleasure, not about passing exams.

t the first meeting in April we enjoyed a session of chair exercises. People with dementia gain the same kind of benefits from regular exercise as anyone else, including improved cardiovascular fitness, strength and endurance. Activities are an important aspect of the memory café. You don’t need a great memory to enjoy yourself.

Every day there are many things that provide us with purpose and pleasure and a person with dementia still needs a good quality of life. Activities can compensate for lost abilities, promote self-esteem, maintain residual skills and not involve new learning. It also provides an opportunity for enjoyment, pleasure and social contact.

The memory café offers peer support which helps to promotes self-care, independence, wellbeing and choice.

You don’t have to have dementia to come and join us – there are various reasons for memory loss – stroke, head trauma or age related memory loss.

If you have any concerns about your memory you can talk to volunteers, and others with similar issues, about your concerns and get advice and guidance.

Torrington in Bloom

Y

ou will find the entry form for our Best Garden competition in this month’s Crier. The closing date for entries is the 30th June and judging will take place on Wednesday 31st July. Sarah Chesters of RHS Rosemoor has once again kindly agreed to be our judge. It would be great if we could get more entries in the Young Gardener of the Year category.

Year 4’s potatoes should be showing signs of life now, and the children will have received their second bag of compost so they can top up the pot as the potato grows. Remember to protect the leaves from frosty weather, and the pots should be placed outside in a sunny position, but not where they are going to be baked by the sun. Water regularly once growth gets going, but not too much – a good soaking once a week is usually sufficient.

Work continues on the renovation of Rack Park, with Rosemoor apprentices and members of the Neighbourhood Chaplains group planting 500 snowdrop bulbs ‘in the green’ around the trees and grassy areas – more bulb planting is

planned for the autumn. We also have a kind man who is going to care for the apple trees planted there as well.

Further tidying has taken place in the Secret Memorial Garden too, and also the 1646 Café garden which this year has been entered as a new ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ project as part of the SW in Bloom competition. Replacement of some plants will also be carried out in the three planters immediately outside the entrance to the library/council offices.

We recently invited Su Maddocks of Clovelly in Bloom to a meeting to discuss how we get Gold in the SW in Bloom competition (Clovelly has won Gold in both the Regional and National Finals). We discovered that we should be keeping a record of our time spent on the In Bloom projects, at an RHS estimate of £13.50 per hour! Su will be returning in a month or so’s time to tour the town to see how best to shape our route and enhance the judges’ experience.

he Magnolia genus is thought to be amongst the first flowering trees on earth, before bees evolved, possibly being pollinated by tiny beetles. The reasoning behind this belief is because native species of Magnolia can be found in Central and South America as well as the Far East, so they must have been growing when these great continents were connected.

Magnolias are the harbingers of spring in the garden but can be vulnerable to late frosts, so grow best in a sunny, reasonably sheltered site.

They are mostly deciduous, but there is an evergreen species available, M. grandiflora which is best grown against a south-facing wall and is a spectacular sight when in flower. Magnolias prefer a neutral to slightly acid soil which is not too heavy.

Probably the best Magnolia for the very small garden is M. stellata which has white, slightly scented, starry flowers.

Quite slow growing, reaching a height of about 15 feet, it can be kept in check by careful pruning. A slightly larger species with pink starry flowers, M. x loebneri ‘Leonard Messel’, reaches a height of about 20-25 feet. M. liliiflora ‘Nigra’ is also ideal for smaller gardens, reaching about 10 feet in height and has wine coloured, lily shaped flowers.

Magnolia soulangii and M. campbellii are probably the most well-known, with the classic goblet shaped blooms in varying shades of pink; these need more space to grow to full maturity, but make a shapely, not too dense canopy.

High Bickington Open Gardens Torrington Silver Band News ay Fair and Carnival are nearly upon us and the Band have been Sunday 16th June

T

his North Devon village with its magnificent parish church has many delightful gardens, some hidden away behind the old cottages or converted barns. In the gardens you will be able to wander besides waterways and through woodlands, or you might like to enjoy the views of the Devon countryside and across to Exmoor. Then this is your chance to see the variety of gardens created by residents, to enjoy tea and cakes in delightful surroundings.

There are attractions for all the family; there will be a guided wildlife walk and a chance for the children to see the alpacas being fed at the Millbrook Estate, or perhaps to pot up a herb to take home. In the smaller gardens, you may be surprised at what there is to see and enjoy as they were created to suit the differing lifestyles of the families.

There are gardens with small speciality plant collections, others made with pets in mind or hen coops and, of course, the many different ways in which vegetables can be grown; there is even a garden where pigs are being used to help restore it to its former Victorian splendour.

If you are looking for ideas on what to do in your garden, you might find just what you are looking for.

Most gardens and the community allotments will be open from 11am - 5pm, with Millbrook open 12-4pm.

Entry will be £4 per adult, children free.

Money raised will be in aid of St. Mary’s Parish Church and other local charities.

We will also be holding our first concert of the year on Saturday 18th May at Howe Concert Hall, Castle Street. Doors open at 7pm and the concert will commence at 7.30pm. There is a £5 entry fee on the door and under 16’s are free.

There will be refreshments and a raffle in the interval.

We are raising money for The Devon Air Ambulance, as one of our members needed their help last year and as usual we will be playing a great selection of tunes to suit everyone. Why not come along and listen and maybe make a suggestion for something you would like to hear at our next concert. We will do our best to find it and play it.

If you have been to one of our concerts in the past year, you will have noticed we have a new young drummer called Daniel. He informed us that he has recently taken his Grade 1 Drum Exam in Exeter and was so proud to find out he had passed with 94 points out of 100. He is very talented and will go far in the future.

uring Fairtrade Fortnight, Great Torrington Fairtrade Group was fortunate to host two visitors from the Windward Islands who ‘took us to the Caribbean’ to learn something of their lives as banana farmers. We learned how the bananas are cultivated, cared for and then harvested in preparation for shipping to the UK and other markets around the world.

From Your County Councillor…

A

lthough I am writing this article in April, by the time you read this May Fair may already have happened, so I would like to start by thanking everybody; from the May Fair Committee through to all the volunteers and participants who work so hard to make May Fair and the Carnival a success. Thank you!

This month on the County Council I am pleased to report that the Council is currently predicting to come in on budget for the 2018/19 financial year (the final calculations will come in May).

This is despite the continued pressures on our social services budgets, particularly Children’s Services. We have been helped by the relatively mild winter, though nonetheless the County’s financial position, when compared with other County Councils, remains strong.

I hesitate to mention the ‘B word’ – Brexit – but readers may be interested to know that Devon County Council has been heavily involved in the planning for Brexit, with or without any agreement with the EU. The Chief Executive of DCC has been asked to act as the Coordinator for the seven Counties of the South West Region – from Gloucestershire to Cornwall, covering 41 Local Authorities.

Whatever does eventually happen with Brexit, Devon County Council are making plans to look after the old, young and vulnerable regardless of the outcome. Devon is a big County, with around 800,000 residents, and plans are being drawn up to prepare for the various different scenarios.

There are over 105,000 young people in the 360+ Devon Schools, and over 22,000 of these young people have some sort of School Transport. Nearly 9,000 of these young people are being supported in some way by DCC staff and this must and will continue.

The Council’s Adult Services Department is looking after 19,000 adults. Over the last 12 months over 24,000 clients have received either an assessment or a service within the Adult Care Service again, regardless of what happens DCC will continue to support these people.

Finally, given the uncertain picture, the Council has strengthened its Emergency Teams and its Trading Standards service, and will work closely with other partners and local authorities throughout Devon and the wider South West.

Despite the uncertain future, locally there is much to be positive about. I was privileged last month to attend the opening of the newly restored Torrington Town Hall – a fantastic achievement and testament to the hard work of so many who made it possible. I have little doubt that the reopening of the Town Hall will attract more visitors into our area and boost our local economy. In fact, I am hoping at some point to organise a County Council meeting in the Town Hall, and I’m looking forward to showing County Council officials around this magnificent building.

New Homes Bonus Community Grants for 2019/2020

T

orridge District Council is now inviting applications for its new round of Community Grant funding for 2019/20. The grant funding scheme is for local projects within the Torridge area looking for support of between £1,000 and £5,000. This could be to cover the total cost of any project, or in addition to other funding already in place.

Applications are welcomed for capital spending, but core organisational costs such as salaries, rent or utilities will not be eligible. A project must be run by a local Parish or Town Council, voluntary organisation, community group or social enterprise - but not individuals or businesses. To ensure a fair distribution of funds, projects that have already received funding through the grant scheme will not be eligible to reapply.

Now entering its fourth year, the scheme has already provided nearly £1.2million to around 140 different projects, ranging from village halls and sport clubhouses, to outdoor cinema screens and even to the provision of a primary school teddy bear garden!

Torridge District Council Planning & Economy Manager Sean Kearney said, “The feedback from projects we’ve been able to support in the past has been tremendous. We’re keen to help many more in the coming year, so want to encourage all community organisations, big and small, that want to do good in their communities to find out more and have a think about applying.”

orridge’s Walk and Talk (Walking for Health) is aimed at helping you enjoy the benefits of walking and enable you to become fitter for life. Walking is the best form of exercise available to everyone, young and old and for all abilities. It has the benefit of being safe, free and low impact. It is also a great way to meet people, make new friends and enjoy space and fresh air.

Everyone is welcome regardless of your ability or fitness level, and we walk at a pace to suit you. All our walk leaders are trained volunteers, and will always be present during a scheduled walk. Dogs are more than welcome providing they are kept under strict control at all times.

T

he frenetic and often strenuous work of the past few weeks has slowed since the installation of the six track panels, which have now been fully clipped down. The remaining work for the team involves general snagging; removing kinks from the rails and jacking and packing the track.

Elsewhere vegetation clearance continues, including weed spraying and general site tidying - all the mundane but valuable work we need to do to make our railway presentable.

Rolling stock maintenance hasn’t been overlooked with Torrington Cavalier, Progress and the brake van receiving attention, as has the tank wagon which is having its chassis prepared for new paint.

We had a visit from BBC Spotlight to film and interview; which should have now made the local news!

Life is tricky for August Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) as he was born with a genetic disorder that makes his face stand out more than anyone else’s. But when his precious astronaut helmet that disguises him mysteriously is lost at the same time that he is supposed to be staring at Beecher Prep secondary school for the first time in his life, things start to spiral downwards in Year 7…even with the kind support of his mum (Julia Roberts), dad (Owen Wilson), older sister Via (Izabela Vidovic) and two newly met best friends Jack Will and Summer (Noah Jupe and Millie Davis). Little does August and his loving family know that when stuff seems to get better, things could get much worse.

What’s good?

ollowing on from the break-in at our clubhouse, three people were arrested and bailed pending further investigation on suspicion of theft and criminal damage, within a few days of the incident. So far, a satisfactory result for us and vindication of the hi-tech security system we now have in place.

In our last report we were playing the first of back-to-back matches against Totnes which we lost 17-10. Just a week later we travelled to Totnes for the return fixture. A sound 14-0 victory gave us an excellent finish to the month.

The Devon Junior Cup Semi Final saw us hosting North Tawton, already established as Devon League 1 winners.

North Tawton proved themselves to be worthy adversaries by coming out comfortable winners 15-44. In our last home game of the season an understrength Dartmouth came to Donnacroft. The match, sponsored

by Tamar Trading, was played in the true spirit of rugby. Despite their shortcomings Dartmouth proved a hard nut to crack. With the scores level at 1414 after 20 minutes, Torrington scored with relentless opportunity. A hat trick apiece for Club Captain Tom Gooch and Cory Hynd. Two tries each for Tom Scantlebury and Charlie Banfield and an excellent solo effort from the 10-metre line for second row Matt Coles, left a trail of desperate tacklers in his wake. Nine conversions from Tom Gooch gave us an excellent 73-19 win to round off our season at home.

Making Tax Digital

MTD – What has changed? On 13th March, as part of his Spring Statement, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced that the planned implementation of MTD for taxes other than VAT will not take place in 2020, rather that they will focus on ‘supporting businesses in transition’. It does however remain a long term objective to proceed with MTD for other taxes. MTD for VAT is not affected by this announcement and came into effect for all qualifying VAT registered businesses for VAT return periods commencing on or after 1st April 2019.

So for those still needing to implement MTD for VAT - which software is compliant? A list of MTD compliant software is maintained by HMRC and can be found at www.tax.service.gov.uk/making-tax-digital-software.This service includes links to the software websites.

What to Consider? The choice of software will be affected by a number of factors including: * Financial reporting requirements – do you want to just meet the minimum filing requirements or do you want more e.g. management accounts, credit control, invoicing, stock control? * Interaction with other systems e.g. CRM systems * Budget – what can you afford? * Resources – do you have staff qualified to operate any new software or systems? * IT infrastructure and access to robust internet – the quality of hardware and internet connection need to be considered and may affect your decisions As well as MTD compliant accounting software, it is worth considering other software that might complement them and which can bring a degree or automation, and hence timesaving e.g. document capture and bank feeds. Bridging software may be appropriate if spreadsheets or complex systems are currently used. You will also need to budget for any hardware and training that might be needed.

As well as considering your MTD obligations, you might consider what other benefits can be obtained through the establishment of effective and efficient financial controls e.g: * Free up time – automation of processes might well generate time savings * Financial information – regular financial information can help you keep control of your finances Who to ask for help? Visual Arts at The Plough

F

ollowing the schools’ shows at the Plough, we have Richard Cook in the main gallery who has shown at the Hayward Gallery and had a one man show at Tate St Ives; and ‘Art on Friday’ who are a group of local artists based at The Plough, who get together every second and fourth Friday in the month. This year their exhibits will cover a diverse range of subjects and mediums with an intriguing themed section, “It Takes Two”. Although based in Newlyn, Richard Cook knows North Devon well. Often his landscape paintings are informed by literature, and his sketches along the Torridge are linked with an in-depth study of the work of Henry Williamson - not only books such as ‘Tarka the Otter’ and ‘Salar the Salmon’ - but the short stories and ‘A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight’.

The Tate has produced a number of films about his work which can be found on YouTube, such as ‘Paintings are Dreams and Reflections’, and more information can be found on his website www.richardcookartist.com . This show is the highlight of what has been an exceptionally strong year for the Plough Gallery, so do come along and join people who will be travelling many miles to see it.

Both shows run from Saturday 18th May until Saturday 22nd June 2019.
