30th Anniversary Issue!

This issue marks the 30th anniversary of The Crier! The first issue came about in October 1988 after Keith Hughes, via The Care Forum, approached the Rev John Bradley, and Janet Broomhead (Librarian) with the idea of a monthly town newsletter. The first Crier was born - one single sheet of A3! The ethos from the very beginning was for it to be free to all households and to encompass both town and villages – enabling everyone to communicate with each other.

This ethos still stands today, and all those who have volunteered and been a part of it over the years have helped The Crier develop into the 36-page version you now have in your hands.There are too many names to mention, but we thank them all. Most of all we thank you the community, as without the many contributions and adverts The Crier wouldn’t exist.

From Your Mayor...

A

s I write this article the holiday season with its very hot weather is well behind us; the weather remains mild, with some much-needed rain at times but it is quite obvious that autumn is now with us.

Our town is still busy with visitors, which is great to see. In July the judges for the South West in Bloom took a keen interest in the floral displays in and around the town: they remarked on how tidy, clean and colourful it was looking.

This was due to hard work from groups such as Torrington in Bloom, the Town Tidy Up which includes councillors, council staff and volunteers, and all the residents and shop owners who helped in one way or another. A big thank you to our two technicians, Colin and Andy, and our Parish Paths Partnerships (P3) volunteer Andy for the extra work they have all put in to help make the town look great. We await the results from South West in Bloom in October.

Throughout the holiday season Council work continues; with Planning, Environment and Policy meetings and Councillors supporting and working with, and for, the community.

The Tarka Valley Railway at the Puffing Billy is gathering a lot of interest from visitors and local people alike.

It is well worth a visit and talk to the volunteers who are so knowledgeable and passionate.

The Cavaliers are working full steam ahead on the Mayflower Bonfire 2020, with their usual good humour and hard work. It will be a fantastic event which will bring thousands of visitors to our town. Please keep an eye out for fundraising events for this great project and support them as much as possible.

I would like to make our community aware of the wonderful Museum here in Great Torrington to which entry is free.

The Museum Committee is looking for

If you think you can help, please contact Val and Peter Morris at the Museum.

Recently Harry Juniper, a local potter, gave an excellent talk there on his life and work. Harry would like to know the whereabouts of the Cavalier’s Bonfire Jugs, so they could be photographed and indexed for posterity, and possibly kept in our Museum. Many of you will also remember the individual tankards

Harry made with the nicknames of some of the elder Cavaliers: sadly, some of these elders have passed away, but wouldn’t it be great if we could get evidence of these tankards too, for it is an important part of our history.

Our Council continues the work of supporting the Dementia Awareness initiative in Torrington, and we thank the Memory Cafe and the Friends of Torrington Library for the work they do in helping and promoting awareness.

Our Council continues to sponsor the registered charity named Clarity, which offers counselling and group therapy for anyone experiencing mental health or emotional issues. On Tuesday August 28th Clarity held an Open Day at the Council Offices, and there was a lot of interest shown. Due to the Universal Credit system introduced recently, we have found that some families and individuals are having to wait for their benefit payments for weeks, sometimes longer. There are also people in work with low wages and zero hours contracts who do not bring enough money home after paying all the bills. There is, therefore, a great need for the Food Bank here in Torrington, and they are always in need of more donations of food and other items.

From Your County Councillor…

I

hope all readers of the Crier had a restful summer and were able to enjoy some of the lovely weather we’ve had.

Writing this article in early September, council work is starting to get busy again after a relatively quiet August. Nonetheless, while there were few meetings at County Hall over the summer, that does not mean I haven’t been busy working on your behalf!

As ever, highways matters have continued to dominate my case work and I’ve used the opportunity of the summer holidays to tour as much of the local road network within Torrington Rural as possible, visiting all 17 rural parishes and talking to local residents as and when I met them.

Although I cover a very large geographical area, I have always striven to make sure that I am aware of the issues affecting the rural parishes.

Needless to say, while I saw some good roads, I also saw some not so good roads.

While it is too early to guarantee any repairs for the next financial year, I have been in constant communication with the local Neighbourhood Officer, highlighting roads that are in a poor state of repair – for example the Beaford to Dolton road – and villages where remedial works need to take place such as Winkleigh and Kingscott hamlet in St Giles in the Wood.

That said, a lot of work has already

taken place over the summer and I was pleased to see the roads around Hollocombe in Winkleigh have now been ‘jet patched’ and that DCC’s Highways contractors are designing works to repair the roads through Upcott hamlet in Dowland and Nethergrove Lane in High Bickington.

During August I also ‘walked the streets’ of Torrington with the Neighbourhood Highways Officer to look at some of the current highways issues affecting the town. These included possible new double yellow lines on the entrance to Jubilee Close and Kingsmead Drive off Greenbank, the entrance to Morton Drive off Calf Street, and the entrance to the old Bluecoats School housing development off Whites Lane.

Helping to make Torrington more ‘accessible’ for pedestrians is also a priority for me. Having taken part in a wheelchair tour of the town I fully appreciate how challenging some parts can be. The County Council does have an ‘Aid to Movement’ budget that we are hoping to use to install a new dropped kerb on South Street, just below the Pannier Market, as well as aligning the dropped kerbs on Potacre Street.

Finally, as many of you know, I am a firm advocate of seeing the Town, District and County Councils work closely together. I was pleased to see a good example of this at the RHS Rosemoor Flower Show. I suggested last year that the car park in South Street could be used as a ‘Park and Ride’ to and from the show and thanks to the cooperation of the Town, District and County Councils

Shared Memories

W

e all have our memories of days long past. As the years roll by we have fewer and fewer people to share those memories with. So imagine my surprise and delight when I read, in the April edition, Vernon Andrew’s recollections of his time working for Algie Furse.

I am Algie’s son and I remember Vernon coming to work for Father. I was just a lad back then and it has been many years since I lived in Devon and even more years since I lived in Torrington. So Vernon brought back a lot of memories.

I don’t remember the markets too well but I seem to recall that when I did get to go they were fascinating. I do remember that the patter of the auctioneers seemed totally incomprehensible as I sat with my uncles and watched their livestock being sold.

The razzmatazz of the Agricultural Show was always good fun. Recalling Vernon’s trip over the side of the trailer reminded me that health and safety back then was an aged ambulance in the corner that took anybody who needed it to the Cottage Hospital. But we all survived and I don’t think it was ever used.

As I grew up I started to help out more and more with the work, and sometimes with the installation of the generating plants. Our memories of this work make it sound as though Torrington and district was in the dark ages, which in a way it was.

Vernon can probably remember the night they switched on the street lights for the first time in the town. As the orange glow went up in sky, the 999 switch board was inundated with calls fsaying that Torrington was ablaze.

Praise the Property Painting Spurt

A

s a recent mover to Gt Torrington, it is extremely edifying, and indeed praiseworthy, to see the recent swell of care and attention being given over to painting and rejuvenating some of the many lack-lustre homes and properties around our town.

I for one really appreciate it, as it demonstrates care and pride in the place we live in and the surroundings. It is especially noteworthy in light of the economy and the financial unknowns of the times we are living through.

Clearly, not everyone is able to afford this necessary maintenance and decoration - perhaps, the Mayor’s Office could encourage local suppliers/painters to ‘put a little back’ by providing some of the necessary materials and services at a reduced rate - so others less fortunate, can join the ‘beautification of our town, homes and environment’?

Well done to those who have already taken the plunge, but, let’s also try to keep it up.

n 2008, speculation was rife as to what kind of business was about to start up on the corner of Fore Street in Torrington. A new charity shop was the most popular guess. However, James and Anita had decided that there might be a niche for a modern, independent opticians’ practice, and the idea of working for themselves rather than for a corporate giant spurred them on to turn the bright yellow walls of what had been a card shop, into a more clinical but nevertheless inviting interior.

With only hours to spare, the doors were open to new patients by the planned start date of 15th September.

During week one, taking the first bookings and selling the first pair of spectacle nose pads were so exciting! Word about our service spread and October, out first full month of sight testing, was busier than we could have imagined.

t has been said that all Torrington Rotarians do is meet once a week and have a lovely meal at Torrington Golf Club. Now, whilst this is true and cannot be denied, Torrington Rotary’s main purpose in life is to serve the community and also try to help some overseas projects if funds are available.

Torrington Rotary is only a small club but in the past year, under President Ray Harris, has raised £5,000 for the Children’s Hospice South West.

Mike Bridgman also had a recent golf event, held together with Holsworthy Rotary Club, where they managed to raise £6,000 between them. These are amounts that can make a difference to both local and overseas charities but it’s not all about raising money. Rotarian Sue Evely organises many events with Torrington School such as Young Chef and Young Writer, competitions involving public speaking and helping to partly fund overseas school trips.

If you feel you would like to put something back into the community and help projects overseas why not consider joining Rotary? You don’t have to attend every week, in this day and age everyone leads very busy lives but as a Rotarian you can fit your attendance in around your other activities. Why not try a trial evening at one of our meetings at Torrington Golf Club, this is usually on a Tuesday and there will often be an interesting speaker after the meal.

Is It Better By Bus?

o you travel on buses? Many a village has no bus at all, so those who can use buses are lucky. But are you satisfied with the bus service? How are the bus stops (bus shelters, if you’re really lucky)?

The NDPTU group (North Devon Public Transport Users) would like to hear from you about your experience with buses and bus stops. The group has already begun a survey of bus stops. Devon County Council calculates that 19% of households in North Devon have no car, so bus services really matter to them. But, if they need buses, they also need shelters. The wonderful hot summer this year meant that shelter on hot days was really appreciated and with the area’s usual, fabled wet and windy weather, shelters are really important.

Great Torrington Remembers Every Man… Private Arthur (Albert) Bennett

A

rthur Samuel Bennett, later in his life known as Albert, was born in Great Torrington in 1895. His father, Samuel, born in 1860 and was also born in the town, worked as a ‘packer’ on the railway. His mother, Sarah, born in 1862, who worked as a lace maker, was born in West Worlington. Living at 65 New Street, the family was made up of two brothers, Percy, born in 1888, and Herbert, born in 1890.

The 1901 census shows us a few changes in the family with both parents changing jobs. Samuel is now a ‘hotel ostler’, which is an employee who looks after the horses of people staying at an inn, and Sarah is a laundress. In the same year, Arthur begins school at Great Torrington Council School for boys. We also know that the young Arthur was an active member of the Wesleyan Church, the Sunday School and the local Boy Scouts Brigade in the town.

By the 1911 census Arthur is 15 and has commenced an apprenticeship as a printer with a local firm working for Mr TJ Dyer. Sadly, his mother is not resident with the family at this time, but can be found as a patient in the local Cottage Hospital.

Arthur’s enlisted in Great Torrington and was enrolled with the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. We can also see that he held the rank of Private and had the serial number 11369.

Arthur Bennett was killed on 11th June 1915; he ‘died of wounds’ in France. He was aged just 20 years. Shortly after, it was reported that an impressive Sunday evening memorial service was held for Private Bennett with a large congregation, which was conducted by the Pastor, Rev. HF Bran. Arthur’s name can be found on the Great Torrington war memorial; in addition, he is also remembered at the Merville Communal Cemetery in the Nord area of France.

Tracing relatives for Arthur Bennett has proven difficult, not helped by his last name being incredibly common. We know that Arthur never married so, sadly, we can immediately rule out any direct family lineage. Tracing the lineage of his brothers is equally painstaking. We know from military records that his brother, Percy Bennett, had moved to Croydon before the start of the war and his contact address is 125 Sussex Rd. South Croydon. However, because these names are such high frequency, it is not possible to be accurate in research and, alas, descendants have not been traced. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has any information.

ittle Torrington Village Hall has seen two welcome improvements during this summer. The car park has been completely resurfaced and the hall floor has undergone a major refurbishment.

We are all ready for the festive season which starts on Friday December 7th with our Annual Christmas Dinner Dance, a special buffet meal followed by dancing to the Texans. Tickets from Irene 01805 623297.

Badminton is still played on Mondays and Wednesdays and we would welcome anyone to start up the short mat bowls group again.

Tai Chi – Is It For Me?

ai Chi is a low intensity form of exercise. It is a slow continuous flowing chain of movements that will help improve strength, movement and concentration. Balance and posture are also areas worked on through particular Chi Kung moves and scientists have reported that it is the perfect exercise for the elderly.

Ian, who runs the sessions, makes them fun and easy going with no pressure. You can even take part sitting down! His current participants have commented that the Tai Chi classes have helped them a lot; improving their balance and posture. They find the slow repetitive movements relax the body reducing stress, and have gained fuller movement in their hands and bodies.

British Native Wild Flowers to Grow in Your Garden Butomus umbellatus

T

his is an attractive pond plant which should be more widely grown in our gardens. It has the common name of ‘Flowering Rush’ but was once called ‘Pride of the Thames’ by Geoffrey Grigson, a noted poet and botanist, in his book ‘The Englishman’s Flora’ because it was first recorded growing in and around the Thames in the 16th Century by John Gerard.

Butomus umbellatus is found in the wild throughout temperate Asia and northwest Africa and probably was introduced to this country via ships sailing into the Thames from those regions. It is now widespread in this country, although concentrated in southern and eastern England and can still be found growing along some of the tributaries of the river.

It is a hairless, aquatic perennial and spreads by stout rhizomes. The leaves are grass-like and somewhat twisted in appearance. The flowering stems are long, up to 150cm (60ins) topped with long-stalked, small pink flowers with darker veins and purplish stamens. These appear in a loose cluster from June to September and are long-lasting.

If you have a medium sized pond then this plant is well worth growing. Plants can be purchased from most specialist nurseries and you should plant it in not more than 4-6 inches of water in a suitable pond container.

Tarka Valley Railway News

I

t has been a summer of firsts at the railway, starting with laying and clipping down the first panel of track.

Our loco Progress ran back and forth several times; the first time for many years that a train has left the confines of Torrington Station. Then on a sunny Saturday in late August, John Puddy’s traction engine made the journey from Bideford to Torrington; the first steam engine to travel the route for over fifty years. This event was publicised in the local press and even featured on BBC Spotlight. Great publicity for TVR. Notwithstanding these momentous events, work has continued on our rolling stock and site maintenance. It has been a busy few weeks but we still need volunteers to help us move forward. Pannier Market News!

T

he Chamber of Trade would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the Pannier Market events week in August and helped to make it a great success! It was amazing to see the market buzzing with activity and lots of happy, smiling faces. There has been so much positive feedback, and lots of ideas about what stalls people would like to see.

The regular markets have started to grow, with new traders joining all the time.

Friday and Saturday have a variety of good quality regular stalls selling a range of goods including cakes, pies, plants, natural dog treats, wild bird food, household goods, crafts, jewellery, eco products, children’s clothes, gifts and lots more.

Thursday will be more of an events day, so there may not be a market every week at the moment, but perhaps an antiques market once a month, an holistic day every quarter, regular food markets, then in school holidays there will be activities for children.

The vision is for the Pannier Market to become the Heart of Torrington, a central hub of activity that provides services and social opportunities which are relevant for the community. A vibrant market will attract more shoppers into the town, and then maybe the empty shops will start to fill up The new markets will take time to develop; all we ask is that people continue to support all the town’s traders as much as possible.

The Magnificent Maya. Lecturer Dr Diana Davies studied at the Institute of Archaeology London, and has spent many years travelling in Central and South America. It was her visit to the Maya site at Palenque in Mexico which inspired her to learn everything she could about the Ancient Maya.

RHS Garden Rosemoor

R

osemoor is a mile and a half to the south of Torrington along the road to Exeter. The area was known originally as Rowe’s Moor and there has been a garden at Rosemoor since 1931, at first extending over 8 acres and now consisting of 65 acres, which attracts about 240,000 visitors a year. Approximately 18 fulltime gardeners are employed with four students and four apprentices aided by around 50 volunteers.

The house, dating from the 1780s and originally the property of the Rolle family, local landowners, was bought by Lady Anne Berry’s father in 1923 as a family fishing lodge to be used only from March to May. Following the death of her father in 1931, Lady Anne moved to Rosemoor and, with the help of her mother, began some landscaping of the garden. In 1939 she married Colonel Eric Palmer

and her early life was spent ‘camp following’ the regiment and having two sons. During the Second World War, Rosemoor was lent to the Red Cross as a rest home for Londoners from the East End who were suffering the effects of the Blitz. After the war her husband bought more land round Rosemoor and established a dairy farm. Lady Anne’s passion in those days was horses.

It wasn’t until 1959, while recuperating from measles in Spain, that she met Collingwood ‘Cherry’ Ingram who suggested that she take up plant collecting and start a garden of her own at Rosemoor. She subsequently travelled widely in South America, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, the USA and Japan to build up the collection of 4,000 plants in her garden. In 1980 Eric Palmer died and in 1988 Lady Anne donated Rosemoor, plus eight acres of

There are sculpture exhibitions in the garden and ‘See how our garden glows’ from November to January when parts of the gardens are illuminated in the dark winter nights.

There is a plant centre and shop and, twice a year, a free entry day.

select group of four writers met to discuss this month’s topic, which was ‘The Key’, and we heard some very interesting contributions on the subject. The first was an extract from a fantasy novel, involving a mysterious, magical key. We were left wondering what this key was for. Then, there was a story entitled ‘Dropping In’ about an elderly lady who drops her key in the front garden in the dark. She is worried about ringing her daughter to bring a spare key as she believes this will be the beginning of the end of her independence. When a new neighbour helps her find the key, they strike up a friendship, and realise they could both be the key to each other’s independent future.

The third piece was a continuation of the tale of a man who, along with his wife, heads up to the highlands of Scotland to carry out a security assignment. After one or two mishaps they reach a secluded Manor House where a clandestine meeting is taking place. There, they find the country’s Foreign Minister, who they previously saved from assassination. The key is delivered to him, and he is very grateful to finally be able to open a strongbox and take out, and enjoy, a cigar called Hamlet.

The final two offerings were a little verse about different sorts of keys and then, from the same author, a short prose piece about buying a farm in 1960,

ver the summer months we enjoyed two outings: to the Open Mill day at Bridgerule in June, and the Engine House at Venn Cross in August. Both very different gardens, both fascinating and with excellent teas and plant stalls to round off the occasions.

The Produce Show held at Rosemoor in August was excellent.

Despite the very dry weather there were good entries in the fruit and vegetable sections. There were so many entries in the baking section that additional tables had to be brought in. Many thanks to those members who helped lay out and steward and many thanks to RHS Rosemoor for doing all the paperwork, providing all the prizes and in such an excellent location.

The dry weather proved a real trial for our garden at the junction of Well St. Some of the key shrubs had already been weakened by the cold spell in March and turned up their toes in the heat. M&S Simply Food were happy to provide water, but crossing the main road with heavy watering cans was a trial. This autumn we shall be having a major rethink on the planting and if anyone feels they can predict the next 12 months weather, let’s be hearing it!

Our autumn programme of speakers kicked off with Roy Crook on the subject of New Zealand and its struggles with the delightful, but invasive, plant species brought in by the waves of settlers. Next month Peter Cantrill of Dayspring Plants, Exeter, will be introducing us to some unusual perennials and bringing examples for us to buy. We shall be meeting as usual at the Methodist Hall on Tuesday 2nd October at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are always welcome.

WW1 has broken out but the people of Devon must stand together.

Torrington contributes to the war effort through their production of ‘barb gloves’ at Vaughan’s Glove Factory. The people of Barnstaple come together to raise funds for the soldiers on the front and the Belgian refugees. The people of Heathcoat’s Lace & Munitions Factory in Tiverton, work together to provide shells and gas nets for the fight. This is a story about Devon communities standing together to win the battle.

p until Saturday 20th October we will be showing two artists who have distinguished themselves in areas other than that of the visual arts.

Joff Winterhart is an illustrator, writer, occasional filmmaker/animator, drummer, songwriter, t-shirt maker, rock’n’roll fan and dog enthusiast. He has written and drawn two graphic novels; ‘Days of the Bagnold Summer’, which was shortlisted for the Costa best novel award in 2012; and is currently being made into a movie starring Rob Brydon and Tamsin Greig, and ‘Driving Short Distances’, 2017. He also made the animated film ‘Violet and Turquoise’, which won the Cymru BAFTA for best animation in 2003.

Tanya Landman will be showing her watercolours downstairs. Carnegie Medal winning Tanya Landman is the author of more than thirty books for children and young adults. She now lives and works in Bideford and storms, cliffs, wildlife, and even the occasional Labrador are key subjects in her watercolours. Petra Freeman is an artist who grew up in Morwenstow, North Cornwall. After studying at Falmouth, Wimbledon and the Royal College of Art she went on to become artist in residence at the Museum of Moving Image on London’s South Bank. Petra’s paintings, drawings and animations have been widely shown nationally at galleries including the Tate Modern, The National Portrait Gallery, I.C.A. and the Barbican Centre. The Moving Image work has been shown and won awards at film festivals worldwide.

This latest body of paintings entitled ‘Lost and Found’ is a revisiting of some sketchbook drawings which are taking on a new life in paint...and maybe lead to a film.....

Emily Garnham Wright grew up on a farm on the North Devon coast with views across the Bristol Channel. Her work is inspired by the scenery of this area and she paints watercolour landscapes, striving to create an impression of contours, planes, horizons and distance. Her pen and ink drawings are sharply detailed, and are clearly recognisable and identifiable. Berry Castle Archaeological Dig

A

t the end of July, Berry Castle was baking in the sunshine, as was the rest of the country. Not only the ground, but also the volunteers who spent the week digging.

This had been one of the main objectives for the Friends of Berry Castle when the group was first formed.

With the grass and wildflowers taking hold, rather than bramble and weeds, it was time to move onto the next chapter.

The dig had been in the planning for several months; volunteers, equipment and the luxury of a portaloo. Everything was going smoothly. Even the weather stayed dry – to the point of having to douse the trenches, so that the soil could be scraped away.

Using ground scans (geophysics) from several years ago, we identified two areas we wanted to look at, both on the east side of the site. One was in the NE, which we hoped would reveal further banks and ditches. The other was a set of parallel lines, coming out of the gap in the eastern bank.

Two trenches were dug and after several days of careful scraping, a stone bank became apparent in the NE trench, which is what we hoped for.

In the second trench, a line of stones was revealed. However, something completely unexpected was found. A First World War bullet from, what was thought to have been the Canadian regiment station in Huntshaw Woods.

Huntshaw is a little far from the front lines in France and Belgium, but trees were cut and sent to the continent as materials for trench building. The regiment’s job was to provide the timber.

The bullet may have been from target practise or even hunting animals.

The Open Day, on the middle Sunday of our dig, gave visitors an informal insight into how Berry Castle has developed over the past couple of years and a chance to see the excavation.

As for the trenches, they are now covered over and await further investigation next summer, when we can hopefully find out more about Berry Castle’s history. The report for this season will appear on our website – www.berrycastle.com - once it’s completed. The Friends of Berry Castle would like to extend their thanks to the volunteers and to Chris Preece of NDAS, who led the excavation.

Coastal Heritage Project

M

uch of the North Devon coast’s history and heritage is still visible when you know where to look. This is due to the protection provided by its status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the passion and knowledge of local people.

We want to know more about our coastal hillforts, the history of Hartland and the World War 2 features across the whole coast.

Assessing and recording Monuments at Risk Volunteer training and survey project Scheduled Monuments are the most significant of the literally hundreds of thousands of archaeological remains that lie on, and beneath, the surface of the modern English landscape. They range in date from prehistoric barrow mounds and hillforts to 20th-century industrial and military sites, providing immense historical depth to the places in which we live. However, they are often fragile and easily damaged. If lost, they can never be replaced.

Here in the North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty we have 27 of these precious sites. We have teamed up with Historic England to help ensure that they remain to be enjoyed by future generations, and we are looking for volunteers to support us.

Potential volunteers are invited to a training event on Wednesday 17th October to find out more, at the National Trust base in Brownsham. During the training we will explain what the programme aims to do and how the recording system works. This will be followed by a visit to a nearby Iron-Age

Fleur’s Gardening Forum - October in the Garden

O

ctober is an excellent time to think about renovating old flowerbeds and assessing what plants have survived our miserable winter/spring and our glorious summer/ drought (not counting weeds!). The soil is still warm enough for planting and for plants to establish good roots before winter really sets in.

It may now be obvious that some plants have given up, or are about to, and they may not survive the coming winter, whether it be mild or cold. Dig these out first – you might just be able to save them if you discard all the dead stuff and find a few new shoots; pot them up and over-winter them in the greenhouse. Other perennials that have been planted for several years may need digging up and dividing. Discard any, usually central growth that looks tired and tatty and keep the outer, more vigorous parts. By dividing you create plants to fill gaps in the garden.

You can also do some autumn pruning of shrubs and trees; this will lessen the risk of winter storm damage, especially to those shrubs which tend to become top heavy during summer. Reduce the height by about one-third and make sure the roots are nice and firm in the ground.

Thin out some branches to create an open effect; this will allow the wind to pass through more easily and lessen the possibility of damage.

Cut back perennials once they have finished flowering, with the exception of tender plants – just reduce the height but keep some top growth as this provides protection during cold weather.

Mulching provides excellent protection, both from the cold and from drought. Your own compost is best; lay it on nice and thick! You can also use well-rotted manure, composted bark chippings, leaf mould or even gravel.

This will keep moisture in and provide insulation to root systems.

Keep your fruit and vegetable patch as clean and tidy as possible, removing dead leaves and fruit which helps to avoid diseases lingering in the soil and disposes of pests that may be lurking therein. You may need to net your brassicas to keep off wood pigeons, because they can strip a plant almost bare very quickly! Remove strawberry runners and pot up the strongest which have rooted and prune out spent raspberry canes, tying in the new ones which will fruit next year.

Hillfort - a practical exercise on how to do the recording on site. We will then be asking volunteers to visit two or three scheduled sites on an annual basis and return the records to us.

Volunteers need to be adults who have access to transport to remote areas, able to walk up to two or three miles across rough terrain and be equipped for bad

weather on occasions. An interest in history, archaeology and conservation of natural and cultural heritage would be an advantage.

ummer is over and what a cracking one it was too! The rugby season begins again.

Following our disappointment at being relegated from Tribute Cornwall/Devon league, we start afresh in Tribute Devon 1.

To kick things off a mixed side of 1st and 2nd team players came together to play South Molton in the annual Dicky Cawthorne Memorial cup game. Dicky was one of Torrington’s and South Molton’s first presidents, and upon his death bequeathed a notinsignificant amount to both clubs. A memorial game was decided to be the best way to honour his generosity.

So the teams came together on August Bank Holiday Saturday with South Molton defending the trophy. Two truly determined sides put on a good show of rugby, with South Molton coming out on top by a good margin to retain the trophy until next time. We wish them well in their endeavours in the forthcoming season having been promoted to Tribute Cornwall/Devon.

Our 2nd team started the competitive season off with a visit to Bideford to play their 3rds. This was a disappointing loss to our derby rivals, but it was good to see a great many new faces and returning players who have not been seen in the green black and white for a long time.

The 2nds kicked off early against Honiton 2nds who were bolstered by some of their Colts. Youth and fresh legs definitely helped, as they ran out winners by the sizable margin of 85 points to Torrington’s game 21.

Our 1sts were next up and they were applauded onto the pitch by a guard of honour formed by our junior section, who had enjoyed the first of hopefully many super Saturdays.

Newly formed Exeter Athletic, which consists of the now disbanded Wessex with a good scattering of Exeter University players and a good input from Exeter Chiefs, were their opponents.

Torrington opened the score with well worked movement of the ball and good defending with Ben Sawyer dotting the ball down and Captain Tom Gooch kicking the conversion. Sadly it was all uphill from then, despite excellent play from both sides Torrie were unable to capitalise any further with Athletic coming out winners by a very flattering 41 points to Torrie’s 7.

As previously mentioned, our juniors enjoyed a Super Saturday with all skills being worked on and mini games being played, before welcoming the 1st team on to the pitch. The youngsters were then welcome to stay and watch the game with a drink and snack to reward them for their efforts. This will be the first of many such occasions Our junior registration day was enormously well supported, with

It’s been a busy start to the new term at GTS! As pupils settle in to their new classes and get busy producing some fabulous work, we’re sharing two pieces of creative writing with you which were crafted in the summer term before the holidays. They are Erin and Emma’s takes on a dystopian novel opening, inspired by works such as the iconic ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘1984’.

I step forward to drone out the monotone promise that we all had to make. It was a symbol of our commitment, one that every other member of the tribe regarded as the most important words that they can ever utter.

I promise to endeavour to protect us and remain loyal. I promise to destroy the Eastern Australian Survivors Registry Office” Unfortunately, this isn’t a promise that I intend on keeping.

One month later Gathering fallen trees has become a mundane task, as has everything else to be honest. The splinters that line my palms, wrists and fingertips are now the only reminders of the pain that once stung like a bee. They’re dead now as well; bees don’t function well without plants and plants don’t function well without water. Neither do we.

I can still taste the smoke in the air, a stale reminder of what used to be our biggest concern. But hey, who cares about wildfires now? It’s not like there’s anything else left to burn.

As I lug the timber back up to the peak of the rock, I see what used to be the emblem of all hope – the Eastern Australian Survivors Registry Office prancing about in their elegant royal blue uniforms. Why blue? Are they trying to rub it in? After they destroyed our last shelter, I did some digging. My main issue with them you see is their rations – the extra 200ml contained in their rations to be exact. I always wondered how they had so much more energy than us. We all promised to destroy them. I’ve tried, believe me. But, what’s the saying? If you can’t beat them, join them.

Awake, or so I think I am. Everything’s bright and blurred.

I’m in my room, though I can’t say for sure. White. White walls. White doors. I turn, and my sister, or so she tells me she is; is wearing white. I just see a girl. In white. Should I feel something? As I walk around I see what was an old school playground was. Plain. Empty. Taking off my white jacket, I notice ‘1106’ written in thin black ink across my wrist.

It doesn’t come off. I feel nothing when my mother looks at me, nor does she feel anything looking at me. Her son.

Something tells me I must go outside, I can’t say what or who, but mother is walking outside too. ‘A simple life.’

Projected across every building. Every plain white building.

I watch transparent faces leave empty homes. Heading towards the centre of this barren town. Drained faces of younger children escort to a tall and hollow building. An unfamiliar face stood outside- “welcome”. His face wrinkled, eyes luminous. Both corners of his mouth rise, teeth gleaming. What is he doing? Why is it, he is the only person sneering his teeth?

The children make no sound. Emptiness fills their eyes, staring at the screen in front of them. The screen seems to be the only thing they connect with. I’m not sure normal schools are like this, no sound, no laughter nor mischief. Silence. I couldn’t stay here. As I start to walk back to mother’s house, the man outside stares. Am I doing something wrong? Maybe so, but I cannot be sure.

This town has no life, has it always been this way? I find myself questioning everything. ‘A simple life’, is still across the houses. Across my house. As I reach the white front door, something catches my eye. No, someone.

rosvenor Church Torrington is three years old! On October 14th we celebrate our third anniversary, and after three fantastic years in Great Torrington Bluecoat Primary School (to whom we are very much indebted) we are excited to announce that we have moved to the Plough on a Sunday morning, 10.30am.

Chatting and catching up with one another has always been a key part of our time together, at the school we used to have food after the service. Now that we meet in the morning, we have decided to meet beforehand at 9:30am for tea, coffee and croissants.

Our location and time may have changed, but our heart for the people of Great Torrington hasn’t! Being in the very centre of the town is a great reminder for us about why we do what we do. We know how important community is for our town, so our doors are open for anyone to pop in and see us.

On Sunday 14th October why not visit us in the Plough café and have a coffee and a piece of birthday cake? Join us anytime between 9.30-11.30am while the service is going on, and who knows, maybe even go into the service and see for yourself what Grosvenor Church is like.

We have three groups for the children: a crèche, a group for Reception to Year 5, and a youth group for Year 6 upwards.

efend the NHS campaign groups from across England lobbied MPs at a meeting at the House of Commons on Monday 10th September.

Campaigners explained their despair regarding devastating health cuts in their communities. All have first-hand experience of CCG consultations, local authority scrutiny panels, and referrals of cuts in services to the Department of Health and to the Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP).

Campaigns from Lincolnshire, West Yorkshire, SOHS Devon, Northumbria, Dorset, Oxfordshire and Dewsbury told MPs that there is an urgent need to address serious flaws in the process whereby Councils’ scrutiny committees refer proposals for damaging NHS cuts and changes to the Secretary of State for Health and the IRP. The MPs present agreed to an action plan which includes asking the Health Select Committee to look at the role of the IRP; to look at the effects of austerity and lack of workforce planning and to ask the questions raised by STITCH: how is the IRP independent of the NHS? Who appoints its members?

The statement to MPs by Dave Clinch on behalf of STITCH: “In July 2013 it was announced, without any prior consultation that all the in-patient beds at Torrington Community Hospital were closing. STITCH was formed in the furore that followed. A campaign involving public meetings, a poster and leafleting campaign, a parish poll and two independent surveys was overwhelmingly in favour of keeping the in-patient beds.

Following the closure of the beds, the Torrington ‘Test of Change’ was introduced with a six month trial of a community model of care called ‘Care Closer to Home’. It had been promised there would be consultation during this period and an independent evaluation of the ‘Test of Change’ and of the new model of care.

It didn’t happen. The North Devon Healthcare Trust and the NEW Devon CCG declared the ‘Test of Change’ a success. The Torrington community was not able to submit any evidence to the contrary until the local MP intervened to insist the community had its say.

The community produced the 26-page STITCH Report with 37 appendices and 17 patient case studies, showing that the consultation surrounding the closure of the Torrington Community Hospital beds was flawed and the new model of care was having a detrimental effect on patients needing 24-hour ‘step down’ care.

An independent report by Dr Helen Tucker also revealed that the new process was not ‘equal or better’ to what had been previously in place.

This evidence was ignored.

Geoffrey Cox MP for Torridge and West Devon noted that the process was not working and that the NEW Devon Clinical Commissioning Group should restart its consultation. STITCH began the process of sending the case to the Secretary of State, which took a total of two years.

The Secretary of State referred the case to the IRP. When a decision was received by Devon County Council and STITCH, it was noticed that none

of the community evidence, including the STITCH report, with its allegations of a corrupt consultation process and failed patient care, had been sent to the Secretary of State and had not been seen by the IRP. It was claimed at the Scrutiny Committee that there had been an oversight and the documents had not been sent. Following representations from STITCH the dossier was finally sent to the Secretary of State.

Several months later a letter from Jeremy Hunt was received informing the Scrutiny Committee that the Torrington Community Hospital case would not be referred to the IRP. The case prepared by STITCH was never referred to the IRP, despite a decision made by the Scrutiny Committee. For STITCH and the community this has been a betrayal.

Because of the claim that the trial ‘Test of Change’ in Torrington was a ‘success’ the ‘Care Closer to Home’ model was rolled out across Devon. Consequently 71% of the inpatient community beds across the county have been closed to date.

Torrington Town Council, Torridge District Council and Devon County Council Health & Well-being Scrutiny Committee voted for the full evidence to be referred. On this basis STITCH wishes the omitted community documents to be reviewed alongside those submitted by the NHS and for this flawed process to be further investigated.”

Hope you had a lovely summer break. It’s the first time we have ever had to cancel a dog show due to the weather being too hot! Sadly our Cranford show also had to be cancelled due to the rain – you sometimes just can’t win!

Hot news at the rescue is that our lovely Star found her forever home and is now very settled and enjoying lovely long walks along the Tarka Trail. I was very sad to see her go, but so pleased she has a loving home. Life has been a little difficult for me in the last couple of weeks as I have been lame, and apparently I have hip dysplasia which means that I may have to have a very expensive operation. At the moment I am managing with restricted exercise and pain relief.

It does mean that I will be staying as a 4EverFocus dog and living at the rescue for the rest of my life. Aunty Lynne is looking for sponsors for me to help with the cost of my keep, and so if you can spare a pound or two then that would really help keep me safe. Time to Think Trees

A

utumn is a good time to plant trees in your garden but you do have until April, which gives plenty of time to choose the one most suited to your garden.

There are literally thousands of trees to choose from so you need to start narrowing them down to those that will thrive in the conditions you have to offer.

Don’t let your heart rule your head; an Acer that only colours well in acid soil will be disappointing if yours is neutral to alkaline. Other soil conditions such as organic content, drainage and moisture retention are easier to change.

A good place to start is by visiting gardens such as Rosemoor where we have variable conditions over the site, so we are able to grow a vast range of trees. We have built on last years’ tree trail and have a few more gems to share with you.

One of my favourites is Gymnocladus dioica or the Kentucky coffee tree. The large elegant leaves look great all year and turn a lovely buttery yellow in autumn.

Crab apples are always good value and at Rosemoor we have several varieties (e.g. ‘Golden Hornet’, ‘Evereste’, ‘John Downie’ and ‘Red Sentinel’); many in the smaller spaces of the formal garden. Although the autumn leaf colour does not tend to be as spectacular as Acer or Liquidambar, crab apples are less fussy about soil and have lovely spring blossom and showy fruit in the autumn; loved by birds.

Conifers are usually thought of as being evergreen, but Taxodium distichum (swamp cypress) turns a gorgeous rich-yellow brown before needles drop in late autumn.

If you are looking for late flowers, Aralia chinensis has fluffy white flower heads followed by black berries. However, it needs to be carefully placed as it is fast growing and suckers relentlessly! Evergreen Arbutus x andrachnoides AGM (strawberry tree) delights with clusters of waxy urn-shaped flowers.

Want to Grow Your Own? Become an Allotment Graduate at RHS Garden Rosemoor

HS Garden Rosemoor, in Great Torrington, is once again looking for 10 keen gardeners to take part in their informative and practical allotment course in 2019.

Starting in February, the successful candidates will receive expert RHS tuition, have their own plot to tend, and take away home-grown harvests. They will receive regular allotment master classes and weekly access to their plots, all in the picturesque setting of RHS Garden Rosemoor.

Pete Adams, course leader at RHS Garden Rosemoor, said: “Our allotment course has grown from strength to strength over the past four years, and once again we are excited to welcome new novice vegetable growers to join us to learn from our expert team. We offer brilliant facilities, all the equipment and the know-how for a successful year of vegetable growing. So why not apply to join us for the 2019 course!”

The course, which attracts a small fee (to cover safety boots and a contribution towards materials) is open to everyone, and the 2018 intake came from a great variety of backgrounds and across all age groups but they all have one thing in common; the passion for, and a willingness to learn, the basic principles of growing your own vegetables. The hope is to see a similar diverse group of people apply this year too.
