From Your Mayor...
F
irst of all, I would like to congratulate the Torrington in Bloom group who have worked so hard helping Great Torrington to be awarded a Silver Gilt, yet again, by the South West in Bloom Awards. This small group, with the help of our community and council technicians have proved once again, that we really take pride in our town. I hear that next year they will be striving for gold! The town hosted the Torrington Music, Arts and Heritage Festival in September, which was a great success and brought many people into the town. Well done to all the organisers and participants for their hard work in making this a truly wonderful weekend. Next year promises to be bigger with even more events. I expect many of you have seen that the Clock Tower in the Square has been quite seriously damaged. The incident is being investigated by the Police, but thankfully no pedestrians were involved. The structural engineer visited and our Town Clerk is waiting for his full report before repairs can commence. From Your District Councillors…
I
am really pleased to be able to report back some positive news from the last month! The motion I put forward to Torridge District Council for them to recognise the need for investment in Calf St Play Area, and the production of a project initiation document, was unanimously supported by the full council and will now be debated and voted on by the Community and Resources Committee. There were some great public speakers, including Libby Childs aged 7 who was recorded as the youngest ever speaker at Torridge District Council! The written question myself and Cllr Laws put forward at the last meeting, regarding the protection of our parks, play areas and open spaces, revealed that Torridge doesn’t currently have a strategy, and so we will now be working on this with Sean Kearney, Commercial and Leisure Services manager. I think it’s fair to say that the special meeting for Westward Ho! Park was a bit
From Cllr Brown
T
his month has been busy with meetings both at the District and the Town Council. The new Local Plan is to be adopted on the 29th October by both North Devon and Torridge, in a joint meeting at the Pier House, which can accommodate both Councils. This plan takes us up to 2030, so from 1st November we can challenge speculative developers when planning applications are outside the
of an embarrassment, and highlighted a number of problems in the council’s constitution. Despite a petition of 4000 signatures, the debate was limited to just 15 minutes and no decision was made by the full council. The chair rejected the proposal to suspend standing orders and the constitution stated it must be sent back once again to the Community and Resources Committee to decide its fate, leaving the rest of us feeling rather useless. On a positive note again the trip to Frome was hugely informative and there are many things I think we can learn from them. The town is much larger, but they share many similarities: including their community spirit, creativity, and passion for arts and culture. I particularly liked their ‘community fridge’ as a means of reducing food waste, and their ‘share shop’ for borrowing all sorts of items rather than having to buy them. The Town Council emphasised the importance of a ‘can-do’ attitude and having regular events to attract people to the town. The District and Town councils
also help to get initiatives off the ground which then become self-sufficient, as well as acquiring derelict areas in need of transformation. Most recently I was pleased to meet Torrington Scouts who were learning about local government. Deputy Mayor Keeley Allin, Cllr Chenie Miller and I went along and were really impressed with the young people, our potential town councillors of the future. They came up with great ideas for the town and have been invited to visit the council offices in the New Year for their own election meeting. Many of you will be aware that I am due to have my first baby at the end of October, and I’ve decided to take some time off after the birth to dedicate to being a Mum. I’ll still be receiving emails but please can urgent matters be directed to fellow District Councillors Cathrine Simmons and Margaret Brown. Thank you again for your understanding. development line; we have a 5-year housing plan with 30% affordable housing, much needed for local people. Our Town Council now has a full membership of Councillors, and it was good to see a ‘Scoop the Poop’ award given to our young children for a great poster design which can be displayed around the Town, reminding us all of the need to pick up after ourdogs. Some welcome news on the Creamery
site, the developer is moving towards demolition of the big building once a bat house is in place, a requirement when demolishing the old buildings. Also, there is a need to help young people suffering from mental health problems; the lack of funding from government makes this is a desperate problem to be addressed ASAP. responsibility for DCC. The largest proportion by far of the County Council’s budget is actually spent on Adult Social Care. I was pleased in October to become a ‘Dementia Friend’, receiving training from the Alzheimer’s Society at County Hall with other County Councillors. Too often we have very negative perceptions of dementia and the reasoning behind the training was to encourage us to stop simply seeing dementia as a disease but to look at how we can help those who live with dementia to continue to lead fulfilling lives. As the autumn continues I am hoping to work with the Alzheimer’s Society and other similar organisations and charities to see how we can roll out this approach across our rural communities and offer support to those who can often feel isolated in deeply rural areas such as ours. As ever, if there are any issues you would like to discuss with me you can ring me on 07886 446560 or email andrew.saywell@devon.gov.uk.

County Lines
‘County Lines’ is a national issue involving the use of mobile phone ‘lines’ by groups to extend their drug dealing business into new locations outside their home areas. A ‘county lines’ enterprise almost always involves exploitation of vulnerable persons; this can involve both children and adults who require safeguarding. Mobile phone ‘lines’ are an essential feature of these enterprises; it is judged that developing a viable tactic to disrupt these lines would have a substantial effect. It would appear that groups target two types of areas, either small coastal towns that suffer from issues relating to deprivation and unemployment, or in contrast more affluent areas with decent transport links to London. The issue of safeguarding is of a major concern as many gangs form a secure base in the homes of vulnerable people commonly known as ‘cuckooing’ and force assistance by using violence or exploiting an addiction to drugs. Similarly, the exploitation of young people is a common factor, with groups often recruiting children as runners. (Précis of National Crime Agency Report Ref: 0129 - FRM) Di Davey

LB Movement is a new Pilates, Yoga and Therapeutic movement studio based in Torrington at Function Fitness. It has been founded by Louise Banfield Bond, who has stepped away from the Pure Pilates Studio after 20 years. We are so excited to focus our efforts in Torrington and have just taken delivery of two Allegro reformers which enhance the services we can deliver. t’s invisible, all around us, we use it almost continually and think nothing of flicking the switch, but electricity can be dangerous. It is one of the main causes of fires in the UK (Source: Zurich Municipal). Some properties, especially older ones have inadequate wiring – a fire and electrical hazard. Some of the warning signs to look out for; You have to disconnect one appliance to plug in another You have to use extension cords or adapter plugs extensively Fuses blow or circuit breakers trip frequently Lights dim when you use another appliance. If any of these happen, seek the advice of a registered electrician. Choosing an electrician therefore is an important decision for you, your family, employees or business. To help you the UK government has accreditation schemes which ensure that the company you’re dealing with is qualified, insured and competent. Members of these schemes can issue certificates and also sign off ‘Part P’ work without having to involve building control. PWR Electrics is accredited by NICEIC, the largest scheme in the UK, and the only one to offer a ‘Platinum Promise’ which guarantees members’ work. We provide electrical services to domestic, commercial and agricultural customers across the North Devon Area. See our advert or contact us on 01237 424679 / 07921 863 028.
What is MBSR Meditation? How Can It Help You?
Mindfulness is a non-secular, simple, and very powerful practice of training our attention. It’s simple in that it’s just about paying attention to what’s happening here and now; such as sensations, thoughts, and emotions in a non-judgmental way. It’s powerful because it can interrupt the habit of getting lost in thoughts, mostly about the future or past, which often generates more unnecessary stress on top of the real pressures of everyday life. Our 8-week course follows the gold standard Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme, originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the late 1970s that explicitly addresses the negative thought patterns that can perpetuate stress and lead to depression and anxiety. Through the course we will explore the essential mindfulness meditation exercises and cultivate new skilful ways of dealing with what goes on in our bodies, minds and daily lives. As a course participant you will receive a comprehensive ‘Course Handbook’ and a set of audio files in CD or mp3 format, which will guide you through the core meditation practices. Ongoing support is always available during and after the course. I am a trained MBSR teacher with over 30 years of meditation practice and am committed to helping individuals find a gentle and compassionate pathway to negotiate the stresses, anxieties and expectations of this often emotional rollercoaster that is twenty first century life. Why not resolve to join us in Great Torrington for our January/February course and make a Mindful start to 2019? Please visit www.gentlemind.uk for more information; access links to the growing body of scientific research around MBSR and to lodge an expression of interest. Alternatively, you can email me, James Murray at info@ gentlemind.uk or phone me directly on 01769 302007.

urwood Park’s Helping Hands would like to invite you to our
few months ago I wrote an article about Private Petherbridge. Since then, I have been contacted by a descendant of the family, Brenda Parnell, and I’m pleased to say she was able to provide a photo of the Petherbridge family. William is the young man on the right. I have also been sent a photo of his father working on the railways, which can be seen on the Great Torrington Remembers webpage. If you’re interested, please go to www. greattorringtonremembers.co.uk I am always keen to hear from anyone who has information relating to any of the soldiers from Great Torrington. Michael Newcombe
Monkleigh Village Hall Urgently Seeking Support
O
ver the years Monkleigh Village Hall has had major repair work carried out by members of the community, and has held some memorable fund raising events. Not only has this put the hall on a financially stable footing, it has also enabled us to replenish tables, chairs, crockery, etc, and raise funds for the North Devon Hospice and Air Ambulance. However, though the Village Hall is being used on a regular basis, the committee have been struggling for some time to run the hall as required, due to diminished numbers. We therefore urgently seek members of the community and local clubs and organisations to join the committee and help the Village Hall flourish once again. Regrettably without the necessary support, the Village Hall will be forced to close. Decisions on the way forward will be made at the AGM to be held on Wednesday the 14th of November. We hope to see you there. For further details please contact the Chairman George Clinch on 01805 601133.
Christmas Bingo. On Friday 23rd November come along and join us at Howe Concert Hall, Castle Street, Torrington, for some bingo fun. Doors will open at 6:45pm and eyes down at 7:30pm. There will be lots of fantastic prizes up for grabs, including chicken dinners and Christmas goodies. There will also be a raffle and refreshments. As always, children are welcome to come along too and there will be a game of bingo especially for them. On Friday 7th December we will be hosting a ‘Ladies Night’ at Torridge Vale Social Club at 8pm. We are delighted to be joined by some fantastic local businesses including: Younique, Ann Summers, Avon, The Body Shop, Hogwash, The White Collection, Jewel in the Town, Sharon Johns Beauty, Usbourne Books and much more. Torrington in Bloom
Results of the South West in Bloom Competition 2018
A
t this year’s SW in Bloom Awards Day at Yeovil on the 4th October, Great Torrington came away with two Golds and a SilverGilt, which was a brilliant achievement. We also did well in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ competition with seven entries. The two Gold awards were won by Torrington Conservative Club and Dartington Crystal, in the Business, Leisure & Tourism category – both being first-time entries. Well done to both businesses! Thanks must also go to Roger Partridge (he who sells lovely bedding plants at the Torrington Common Car Boots during the summer, for it is he who supplies both businesses). Great Torrington won a Silver-Gilt overall, thus maintaining our high standard and reflecting the hard work put it by members of TIB and helpers. This is the seventh year running we have won Silver-Gilt! The ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards were as follows: * Dartington Crystal Planter, Trafalgar Drive - Thriving * Pannier Market Bed - Advancing Rack Park - Advancing Tarka Valley Railway - Advancing St Michael & all Angels Churchyard Advancing The Secret Memorial Garden Advancing 1610 Swimming Pool – Improving A great deal of hard work has been undertaken by lots of different people over the year, and TIBA would like to thank everyone who has helped keep Great Torrington looking bright and colourful, clean and tidy – we really do appreciate very much all that you do. Don’t forget our AGM is on the 12th November at the Conservative Club, 7pm, if you want to find out more about TIBA. Cherry Hammon, Chair Torrington in Bloom Association 01805 625788
Your Commons…
T
he leaves are down, the trees have taken on a photographic skeletal appearance; time to put on your warm jacket, pull on your boots and view the Commons through a different lens. The colours can be spectacular at this time of the year. Look out, say, for amazing spider webs on frosty mornings, and the arrival of migrating birds such as redwings and fieldfares. Meanwhile, work abounds. Big Al, Jason and our volunteers have been undertaking all sorts of autumnal jobs; including reducing dangerous trees, principally to ensure public safety, but mindful of the value these trees provide to various forms of wildlife - as ever a delicate balance. They have also been working on the Ovator area, where clearance work has been undertaken, opening up some spectacular views of the Torridge valley. In addition, meadows have been cut to encourage next year’s spring flowers, and the stepping stones across Commons Lake, adjacent to Roman Road, have been reset. A little further east is the small wooden bridge (often used by people walking to the allotments), which will be shortly reestablished having been largely removed given its poor state of repair. Horse riding (but not hunting) is permitted on certain parts of the Commons, but there has, in some quarters, been confusion as to exactly which parts. To address this, we are shortly to put in place wooden markers identifying a ‘horse trail’. Of course, where riding and pedestrians co-exist, we ask that riders be extremely mindful of public safety and proceed at a careful pace. Talking of public safety, there have been a number of incidents of cars and motorcycles travelling at speed along parts of Rolle Road. This is totally unacceptable, as a consequence of which, we are shortly to put in place barriers to prevent such reoccurrence. Indeed, vehicles, unless specially licensed, are not permitted anywhere on the Commons; the exception being some
“There have been a number of incidents of cars and motorcycles travelling at speed along parts of Rolle Road. This is totally unacceptable...” provision at the Old Bowling Green and small car-park below. 5th November - bonfire time! Also a time when one of our increasingly rare mammals go into hibernation hedgehogs. These are becoming almost an endangered species, principally through habitat loss. Actually, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a hedgehog on the Commons - have you? Do let us know. That said, can I ask that, should you be having a bonfire, you check to ensure none of our prickly friends have taken up residence there. The later you prepare it, of course, the better. One final thing. At the Old Bowling Green there will soon be a former post box, painted green, for those wishing to make donations, be it for parking, or indeed, to simply support our work (emptied daily!). Conservators are constantly engaged in fund-raising as we seek to find the not inconsiderable sums to maintain the 148 hectares (365 acres) plus 33 kilometres (20 miles) of paths that comprise the Commons. Torrington-Roscoff Exchange Group
P
erhaps one of the reasons for the continuing success of the Torrington-Roscoff twinning arrangement is the ease with which our visitors can reach us, and vice versa. After all, it’s a mere hop across the channel on Brittany Ferries’ Roscoff-Plymouth route. You might be forgiven for thinking that the peoples of south-west England and the north-west of France have beaten a well-worn path across the channel between the two ports over many decades, if not centuries. Not so; in fact, the first ferry crossing was made only in 1973, and far from being just another means for holidaymakers to reach the sun-drenched south, it was set up for a far more interesting reason. Following the May 1968 civil unrest in France, which had brought the economy of France to a virtual halt, the farmers of North Finistere were finding it difficult to achieve a decent price for their vegetables. Their union therefore made a number of proposals to the French government, among them the building of a deep-water port in Roscoff enabling them to export to the UK, which would join the Common Market in 1973. Work on the port began in 1970; however, no ferry operator was interested in running a service to Plymouth, and so a new company was established. Then came the search for a ship. A former Israeli naval ship laid up in Vigo, Spain was found and purchased for 15 million French francs (then around £1.4m). Renamed Kerisnel, the 100-metre-long ship made her maiden crossing on 2nd January 1973 carrying just three lorries and one car. Happily, the Brittany Ferries service has improved massively in the intervening years, and we are looking forward to travelling on it when we visit our compatriots next year. If you are interested in getting involved with the exchange group, why not get in touch by calling Antony on 01271 549454 or Nick on 01805 625765.

uring the last month the residents have been entertained by builders carrying out repairs to the exterior of the house and by the construction of a new house next door! We also enjoyed an outing to Rosemoor and a talk by Phil Topham. We are looking forward to a visit to Merry Harriers for Christmas shopping and coffee this month. In December we shall be going out for our Christmas meal at The Royal in Bideford, and some of us are going to see Peter Pan at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple. Look out for posters in the town for news of our Christmas coffee morning. We have a vacancy at Glen Tor and if you are interested in finding out more for yourself or a loved one, please give our house manager a call on 01805 623605 to arrange a visit.

May Fair & Carnival 2019
I
t’s hard to believe, but the preparations for May Fair 2019 are already in full swing! There are so many things that go on behind the scenes in order for May Fair, Round the Tree, and Carnival to take place: emails have already been fired off inviting groups to the carnival, getting permissions and booking the fair! All of these, and many more tasks, are done by volunteers who give up their time in order to ensure our traditions continue. We can always use more help. Why not come along and be a part of the fun? There are lots of ways to get involved, with varying levels of commitment; after all, these much-loved celebrations can’t continue without community input. You can contact us on Facebook or come along to the next Great Torrington May Fair and Carnival Committee meeting at 7pm on November 20th at the Methodist Church. We look forward to seeing you there. The dates for next year are: practice night, 1st May; May Fair, 2nd May; Round the Tree Race, 3rd May; Torrington Carnival, 4th May. Gill Clayton

Great Torrington Working towards a Dementia Friendly Community
G
reat Torrington Town Council is currently working on a project with members in the community that aims to establish Great Torrington as a ‘Dementia friendly community’. This work is building on work already undertaken by ‘Friends of the Library’. As a starting point, we are looking to establish who has already received training in this field. This may be an individual or a group/organisation. We are also looking at who might like to have training, again whether as an individual or a group you belong to. If you are able to respond to either of the above requests, please let us know via e-mail address torringtondementiafriendly@ gmail.com. Cllr Mrs Di Davey (Mayor)

Join The North Devon AONB Coastal Heritage Project!
T
he North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Coastal Heritage project is now underway. Led by Joe Penfold, Coastal Heritage is a two-year project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with additional support from local partners including the National Trust, Torridge District Council and North Devon Archaeological Society. Much of the AONB’s heritage is at risk from environmental impacts, lack of official protection and/or lack of public awareness. To address this, the project will support practical conservation work on number of historic and archaeological sites with a particular focus on coastal hillforts and World War II features. Alongside this, training - delivered by Historic England - will be offered to volunteers to help identify, record and assess the condition of the AONB’s Scheduled Monuments. Over the autumn/winter months there will be a number of opportunities for the public to get involved. On the 10th November there is an opportunity to join the AONB team on a guided heritage walk in Hartland and, due to high demand, a further opportunity to get involved in practical conservation work and training on ‘Assessing and Recording Heritage at Risk’ on the 16th November in Brownsham. For further details about how to sign up to these, or future events, please visit our webswww.northdevon-aonb.org.uk/events, follow @explorethecoast, email us aonb@devon.gov.uk or Joe directly on joe.penfold@devon.gov.uk #Spotlightonlocalheritage

utumn has arrived and we have enjoyed the benefit of good weather on working days. Much has been done by our band of volunteers since the last report; the braking system on Progress has had maintenance for the first time in many years; the paintwork on the body panels of Torrington Cavalier has been attended to and, with the delivery of many tons of stone, the track beds have been filled in. The old ivy-covered building next to the signal box has now seen the light of day, and we have plans to use it for storage – Air BnB was suggested but not pursued! Delivery of the level crossing is imminent, and work on replacing the gate posts has commenced. The good weather has helped retail sales in the carriage, so we have had a good month. We have our annual quiz on Friday November 23rd at 7 for a 7:30pm start at the Puffing Billy, Torrington. Cost £5 per person teams of 2-6 to include nibbles. Book a table in the carriage or direct in the Puffing Billy. Finally,if you have any unwanted metal keys please drop them into the carriage, as we can raise more funds via scrap metal. As always, do please visit our Facebook page for weekly updates and the website has useful information on our railway www.tarkavalleyrailway.co.uk Rob Martin, Tarka Valley Railway

North Devon Choral Society Armistice Centenary Concert Saturday 8th December 7pm at Torrington Church
O
ur Armistice Centenary Concert comes at a time when the whole country will be united in commemorating those that lost their lives, or were injured in the defence of their country. The first half will be a work by Andrew Campling: ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’, a cantata based on the WWI diaries of Canon William Campling, the composer’s grandfather. Already in rehearsals we are discovering the emotional impact of this work, with its marching songs (Long Way to Tipperary), hymns (Abide with Me), German and French songs, the Last Post, Psalm 23 and its settings of Wilfred Owen and Studdert Kennedy. Andrew Campling, and his father, William Campling’s son, will be attending the performance, and, in accordance with Andrew’s wishes, there will be a retiring collection in aid of the British Legion, who will be on parade at the concert, along with Torrington’s Army Cadets. In the second half we will sing Elgar’s Spirit of England, a majestic setting of Binyon’s moving poem, For the Fallen, followed by his atmospheric Nimrod , and the final uplifting, optimistic A Song of Thanksgiving, which Vaughan Williams composed in 1945, at the end of WW2. Conducted by John Hobbs, there will be a full orchestra, and soloists will be Sophie Edwards and Paul Martyn-West. Tickets are £15, children, students and ex or current service men and women free, available from Torrington Jewellers or call Janet Sharp on 01805 628262. More details on www.northdevonchoral.org.uk.

T
his is a lovely native shrub that can be grown almost anywhere, and is ideal for the small garden, reaching a height of about 4 metres (12 ft) and spread of 1.5-2 metres (5-6 ft). Viburnum opulus is commonly known as the Guelder Rose, but it certainly is not a rose! It forms a small, spreading tree or shrub and is a native of most of Europe, growing in hedgerows, woodland edges and thickets. The flowers appear in during June/ July and resemble those of a lace cap hydrangea, with a circlet of white, sterile flowers enclosing tiny fertile flowers in the centre. The fruits appear in clusters of bright red, almost translucent berries and can persist well into winter, providing the birds don’t eat them! Leaves are downy underneath with three to five spreading, toothed lobes and appear in opposite pairs on the stems. Maintenance is quite simple; prune in autumn/winter to keep the shape and size you require. Older specimens can be rejuvenated by thinning out the very old growth to allow younger stems to take over. There is a golden leaved form of this shrub, Viburnum opulus ‘Aurea’, which makes a lovely contrast when grown beside a dark leaved Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ (Elder), for example. The Snowball Tree is a distinct variety of Viburnum opulus (var. roseum), its name aptly describing the globose heads of white, completely sterile flowers. Fleur

Great Torrington School During the Second World War Part One
A
fascinating archive exists at Great Torrington School: a Log Book handwritten by the first four headmasters from 1939, when the school opened (built at a cost of £25,582) until it became a comprehensive in 1974. Especially interesting are the first entries which record life at the school during the Second World War. Written in ink in large, bold handwriting, the first headmaster, Thomas Nancekievill, records the opening of the Great Torrington Senior Council School on 13th September 1939. There were five men and five women members of staff, together with a woman from the Agricultural Department who was to teach two lessons a week, a cook, a kitchen maid and a caretaker. Pupils came from 17 contributory primary schools, many of which no longer exist; such as Roborough, St Giles in the Wood, Weare Giffard, Frithelstock, Alverdiscott and Yarnscombe, and they travelled in seven buses and two cars with prefects ‘appointed to each conveyance’. At the end of the first week, 15th September, there were 296 pupils which, by the following week, had increased to 303 because of the admission of evacuees. By 13th October attendance was down to 60% because of an outbreak of measles. This epidemic continued into 1940 which caused a lot of staff and pupil absence. This, together with the call-up of several male members of staff for military duties and harsh winter weather, which prevented the buses from running, prompted Mr Nancekievill to write, on 21st February, ‘It is most difficult to carry on’. Activities at the school were necessarily of a practical nature to ensure survival during this period, and treats were few; except around Christmas time when there might be a concert by pupils in school, or an outing to the cinema in Church Lane which leads from Whites Lane to the Parish Church. The Mayor, Mr Lampard Vachell and his wife, often put on entertainment for the pupils of the senior school together with the children from both the Torrington primary schools and Weare Giffard. On 10th January 1940 Mr Nancekievill writes, ‘A conjuring display was enjoyed and oranges were distributed to the children. Nearly 500 children were present.’ May Fair didn’t take place during the war but on 31st May 1941, it is noted that the ‘School took part in Folk Dancing on Old Bowling Green at 7pm’. School sports are mentioned from 1942 onwards between the four houses, Drake, Kingsley, Raleigh and Walpole. By 9th September 1940 the number of pupils had risen to 620 including evacuees, mainly from London, and by 28th November there were 645. School buses had to make double journeys and it was difficult to accommodate everyone in the canteen. At first, a double lunch shift was impossible, owing to a lack of equipment, until plates were received from the Bovey Tracey Pottery Company. Everyone rallied round. Gifts of apples, rhubarb, vegetables, jam and, on one occasion, two gallons of ice-cream were sent into school by local people for use in the canteen. Moira Brewer

ittle Torrington WI continue to meet monthly in the Victory Hall, Little Torrington, and our meetings are well attended. In September, Paul Rendell a local historian and a Dartmoor National Park guide with over 20 years’ experience, gave us a very interesting talk on aspects of Dartmoor and shared with us his experiences and memories of when the film ‘War Horse’ was filmed. This month we will be learning about pruning and flowering shrubs. The Little Torrington WI meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Victory Hall. If you are interested in coming along you will be most welcome. For more information speak to our President, Lyn Wharton on 01805 603052.

fter the long hot summer, the kids went back to school and the young rugby players returned to Sunday morning rugby at Donnacroft. Boys and girls of all ages from U6- U14 got back in the swing of making their tackles and scoring tries. During the summer months, there was an end of season presentation evening where all players received a medal for the outstanding effort throughout the season, but also a few individual awards. U7 Coaches’ player of the year – Gethyn George U8 Coaches’ player of the year – Samual Greene U8 Trainer of the year – Fraser Hinchcliffe U8 Most improved player of the year – Ryan Buckingham U11 Coaches’ player of the year – Toby Cann U11 Players’ player of the year – Jasper Blight U11 Most improved player of the year – Charlie Bradbury U11 Coaches’ player of the year – Daniel McDonald U11 Players’ player of the year – Josh Cann U11 Most improved player of the year – Harry North Players and parents also teamed up with the senior part of the club for the first time to help with the club clean-up day. Equipment was cleaned; fences and changing rooms were painted to get ready for the new season ahead. Unfortunately, we have had to fold our U14 team allowing the 7/8 really committed lads the opportunity to play regular matches in a full team for other clubs. The U9’s have had their first game of the season, which was also their first ever game of rugby where they are able to tackle each other without having to aim for a players tag. They were so excited and played two very good games against our nearest neighbours Bideford RFC. Both teams scored many tries but most importantly came off the field with huge smiles on their faces. There are many games coming up for our other age groups over the next couple of months. If you have a son or daughter that would like to get into rugby, we are currently taking players from U6 – U13. For more information, please contact Adrian Avery on 07780 665 378 or email agavery81@gmail.com Adrian Avery (Youth Chairman)
O
ur September 1st team games were a mixed bag of results. Exeter Saracens put us on the end of a resounding defeat 0-51. Our next opponents were New Cross, who we have previously had some really good games against. However on this visit to Donnacroft, with a hat trick for scrum half Billy Cockwill, two for skipper Tom Gooch and individual scores coming from all over the park, Torrington came out well on top with a morale boosting 76-0 win. We were hoping to capitalize on this win heading toward North Tawton, however it was not to be as three breakaway tries from our opponents gave them a win in what was a closer match than the score line 6-21 dictated. Our 2nds were game competitors against both South Molton 2nds, losing 10-70 and then to Ilfracombe 1sts where a spirited display resulted in another loss 5-43. Their next opponents are Tiverton 3rds at Donnacroft, in what could be a close game, and then away to Exmouth 3rds. As always your support is welcomed at any home game. The bar is usually open from 1pm on game days. As always the Clubhouse is available for hire. Please see any committee member on match day or contact me Mark Waterson 0779 9401704. he Mayor and the town’s three District Councillors met with representatives from Torridge District Council and 1610 on the 5th October, to discuss a number of issues in relation to the swimming pool. Representatives from 1610 confirmed that children who have swimming lessons, approx. 200, are entitled to free swimming. A number of maintenance issues were discussed, and 1610 confirmed that they have now employed a local builder to deal with some of the minor ones in relation to the fabric of the building. 1610 will display a notice in the reception area that will set out works to be completed and anticipated time scales. There have been rumours within the town regarding the future of the pool. At the meeting it was pleasing to hear 1610 confirm they have another 3.5 years left on their contract and have every intention to continue with the pool in Great Torrington. Other planned improvements include better floats for fun hour and parties; repair of floor sweeper to reduce debris in pool; review of lockers and improved general cleanliness along with increased training for members of staff. We hope that as we go forward we will continue communication with 1610, and that in doing so ensure that we maximise the potential of the pool for the community of Great Torrington. Poppies are available to buy for £28 each with £3.50 from every poppy sold going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Standing tall amongst the poppies is our ’Unknown Soldier’, affectionately known as George N. He is a life-size WWI infantryman created by another local Rosemoor sculptor George Hider. Afterwards the display will become incorporated into our annual Winter Sculpture Exhibition. We welcome all serving and retired armed forces personnel plus a family guest in for free (simply bring proof of status such as current ID or the Tri-Forces Veterans Badge to the front entrance). Members of the Torrington Town Band will be playing from 2.30pm down at the Learning Centre Terrace. Future Proofing Rosemoor’s Woodland
A
©RHS/Sheila Dearing
t RHS Garden Rosemoor we are fortunate to own woodland encircling the garden, and although not all of it is open to the public, it plays a number of important roles. Firstly, it protects plants from the elements; providing shelter from the wind and creating benign microclimates. Just as importantly, this haven for wildlife is a stunning backdrop to the garden. Wherever you are, the woodlands are visible and this helps the garden to fit naturally into the Devon landscape. Much of the woodland was planted in the mid 1960’s with conifers for timber production in standard blocks of larch, Douglas fir, Norway and Sitka spruce. The long term vision is to restore the majority of the woods back to native deciduous trees, predominately the majestic English oak. The woodlands are classed as being ‘Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites’ (PAWS). Basically this means the site has a long history of woodland cover, although not necessarily natural woodland. With the discovery of phytophthora ramorum affecting the larch trees, the Forestry Commission put a felling order on the larch plantation behind the Learning Centre. We took the opportunity to replant this area with silver birch trees which will act as a nurse crop for naturally occurring oak tree seedlings. Once the oaks have taken hold, the shorter lived silver birch will be removed and a new landscape full of biodiversity will be created. Likewise, larch has been felled in the recently purchased woodland on Mile Hill, and replanted with native trees such as English oak and pockets of ornamental trees including Red Oak and Tulip trees to give splashes of autumn colour on the hillside. Although it is sometimes necessary to remove trees in the woodlands through disease (which may not always be apparent to the naked eye), the long term strategy is to replace with native species which will be a haven for wildlife and of benefit to the wider environment. Torrington Memory Cafe
A
t the beginning of September we enjoyed an outing to Bernaville Garden Centre where we had lunch and spent time browsing around the shop. At the second meeting we participated in a chair exercise session. From October we go back to one meeting a month - the second Thursday. We will be running a craft session at the November meeting, and in December the cafe will be closed as we will be enjoying Christmas lunch at the Torrington Arms. You don’t have to have been diagnosed with dementia to attend the cafe - there are numerous reasons for memory loss; stroke, head trauma or age-related memory loss. Just come along and talk to our trained volunteers and meet other people with similar issues. Contact Pauline on 01805 625969 Meets on the second Thursday of the month at the Methodist church meeting room from 10.30 till 12.30pm.

KS4 Winner Motive
She clenched her son’s wrist in distraught Crying tears, mid-thought. Her son’s innocence has been destroyed, His laugh of divinity, extinguished Her loneliness, growing, Her isolation, creeping. A little white flame of hope sparks at the chance it has, With no avail. “Why?” She asks herself again, and again. Revising the word in her mind, Imprisoning it in the deepest crevice of her thoughts Ultimately becoming the basis of her life. She still remembers the moment he left for war. The same clenching, The same tears, The same question, The same motive. But he still left anyway Acknowledging her pleads. But his dedication, And his want, And his heroic mind-set, They still lead him to the battleground Where he met with his premature fate. As his body lay on the ground Time stopped. And he walked toward his mother’s voice once again. Jade Shambrook, Year 11

ave you been watching Joanna Lumley on her travel across The Silk Road? I’ve been utterly inspired and astonished at the sheer beauty of places such as Georgia and Iran. I’ve also added Baku in Azerbaijan to my ‘must see’ list. That architecture! The program was sponsored by SAGA holidays, who I am an accredited agent for, along with many other suppliers who offer some amazing experiences along the route. SAGA specialise in holidays, tours and cruises for the over 50’s and offer some wonderful destinations. On some of their cruises and tours, they even include a FREE private taxi transfer to the airport or port from your home, which is a really good thing to have for us here in Great Torrington! Of course, not everyone reading this will qualify for the over 50’s holidays, but I can cater for everyone, and being fully ABTA bonded, you can be assured every trip I curate, will be fully financially protected. If you want to take your own ‘Road trip’, from The Silk Road to Route 66 in the USA or any other journey, do call me for a chat. I’d love to hear from you! Gillian Abram – Not Just Travel. Are You Sure Your Chimney is Clean & Ready to Light?
T
his time of year is the perfect time to check your chimney is clean, safe and has been swept by a registered chimney sweep. Chimney fires in England accounted for over 4,200 incidents dealt with by fire and rescue services between April 2016 and March 2017. Chimneys need to be dirt free to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gasses, so regular cleaning removes soot and creosote, and will help prevent dangerous fires. All chimneys and flues need to be regularly cleaned and checked to ensure they’re free from debris and in full working order. A blocked or defective chimney can cause both chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisonings. Make sure you have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them monthly. Also do you have family, friends or a neighbour who may need your help to test their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms? Sweeping frequencies Sweeping frequencies below are for guidance only. Frequency will depend on a number of factors including: type of fuel, appliance used, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, type of chimney. * Smokeless coals - at least once a year * Wood - up to four times a year * Bituminous coal - twice a year

away. Mix and match different parts of the weekend according to your interest but booking is absolutely essential. As Christmas approaches, this is a chance to learn how to make divine, raw, organic chocolates with superfoods, so you can amaze and delight your family and friends! Wellbeing Tip: What else but Chocolate Cacao is truly a superfood, so how come chocolate is so often unhealthy? Well it’s simply down to commercial manufacturing processes making it deliberately addictive, to appeal to food industry created sugar junkies.
“Cacao beans are the base ingredient for chocolate and contain over 300 different substances including a wide variety of minerals and 40 times more antioxidants than blueberries, also more than either red wine or green tea.” The word cacao refers to the raw natural unprocessed cacao bean, cacao powder and cacao butter which are extracted from the bean at LOW temperatures without downgrading nutritional values. The word cocoa refers to cacao processed at high temperatures where the naturally bitter cacao is chemically treated and roasted at temperatures that destroy 60-90% of its superfood value. It’s also often combined with huge amounts of refined sugar, cheap processed fats and dairy milk. Cacao beans are
the base ingredient for chocolate and contain over 300 different substances including a wide variety of minerals and 40 times more antioxidants than blueberries, also more than either red wine or green tea. Raw cacao is also the highest plant based source of iron and one of the highest plant based sources of magnesium with more calcium than cow’s milk. But non organic processed powder contains pesticides, herbicides and very likely GMO’s. And 70% of the world’s cocoa is produced using low paid indigenous communities, including child slaves using dangerous implements such as machetes and spraying toxic chemicals. So all in all, organic fairly traded raw chocolate is actually wonderfully good value for money, when all these issues are taken in to account. To learn how to make your own, come along to our Raw Chocolate Making Workshop in November! Next bi-monthly grocery order dates: 19th November, 21st January.
