From Your Mayor…
A
s always, being Mayor is a very busy but enjoyable time. In mid-September Cllr Davey and I had a lovely time attending the proclamation of Barnstaple’s Ancient Fair and meeting North Devon Councillors; it is obvious speaking to them that we all face the same problems - in that grants are very difficult to obtain in order to support projects in our towns. The 10th anniversary of 14 the Gallery in our Pannier Market was an opportunity to meet many young artists and present prizes; a draw raised money for the North Devon Hospice and some lovely photographs were taken which can be seen on the Council’s website. I proudly went along with the Torrington in Bloom Committee to Taunton on the 6th October, to receive a Silver Gilt award; a fantastic achievement for such a small group to attain this huge accolade. The Big Bang at GTS was attended
by all Torridge Schools on the 7th October; there were many opportunities for children to explore engineering and electrical forces through play, and maybe be inspired for a future career. They are progressing with the building of a twoseater plane, yes a real plane, which will be based locally when completed and will eventually fly.
“As in many cases, a first response letter hopes you will go away...” Local awards for the best garden were presented on the 11th October at the Torrington Arms. Our Torrington in Bloom Committee needs more help with looking after the flower beds around our town if we are to get Gold next year. You will have seen, or heard, that Jeremy Hunt passed the buck back to DCC with regard to our complaint about the flawed consultation on the removal of our inpatient beds and the misery caused to our community. He says that this was a first review, signalling that they (DCC)
must work with our local NHS and the CCGs to solve local issues. As in many cases, a first response letter hopes you will go away, but here in Great Torrington we will be scrutinizing the Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee’s actions over the coming months, because of the implications for the rest of Devon’s inpatient beds; ongoing care is the right of every citizen at the first point of call. On Friday 14th October we held my Charity Concert, raising much-needed funds for Great Torrington May Fair and Torrington in Bloom. The Torridge Male Voice Choir entertained us all. The Christmas community lunch will be going ahead again this year and I have already received names from some interested folk wanting to attend. I know this will surprise you, but there isn’t long to get this special event organised as it takes a lot of planning Take care Margaret Brown, Mayor of Great Torrington

hanks to grants from The Cavaliers and the Town and Lands Charity, together with fundraising by the Methodist Church, I am pleased to say we now have a third town defibrillator, attached to the Church for community use. The equipment was

Overwhelming Community Support for Great Torrington Town and Community Hall
I
am delighted to report that over 100 people attended our recent open morning; even the inclement weather did not dampen the enthusiasm and support for the project. We asked visitors to complete a survey to tell us what they would like to see the building used for; suggestions ranged from weddings, dances, concerts, lectures, civic events and award ceremonies on the first floor, to craft fairs, exhibitions antique fairs and May Fair events in the undercroft; to name just a few. Most people attending did not realise how much work has been done so far; the Trustees would love to raise enough money to open up and glaze the undercroft, as this would show the community our project is very much alive! It would be a very suitable area for local charities to hold any fundraising events and promotions, even when the British weather is unkind! Thank you to everybody who attended and also to The Green Lantern for their kind help. As already reported, we have reached stage two of the Big Lottery Fund but there is still a long way to go, and I will continue to update you on our progress through the Crier. Possible Closure of Acute Stroke Services at NDDH
H
aving worked as a consultant physician at North Devon District Hospital I am deeply disappointed to learn that there is a possibility of closure of the acute stroke services, with transfer of acutely ill patients to Exeter for evaluation and treatment. Stroke occurs at all ages and about a quarter are aged under 65 years. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 6 men will have a stroke by the age of 75 years (UK Stroke Association). European Stroke Organisation (2008) guidelines state that the “time is brain” concept means that treatment should be considered “an emergency... avoiding delays should be the major aim in the prehospital phase of acute stroke care”. The American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association (2013) guidelines state that “given the narrow therapeutic window... timely evaluation and diagnosis are paramount and should receive the same priority as patients with acute myocardial infarction or serious trauma”. The Royal College of Physicians National Guidelines call on Health Authority Commissioners to respond to “a possible acute stroke as a medical emergency with no time delays”. The evidence and advice are international and overwhelming. The closure of facilities in North Devon would not only cause avoidable deaths, but also condemn survivors to possible permanent paralysis, blindness or inability to eat and drink. I appeal for planners to reconsider this proposal. Dr. S. G. Barber FRCP, MB, ChB, BSc, DTM&H
Save Our Hospital Services – What Can YOU do? How did we get here?
A
bout two years ago NHS England announced that it was putting something called a ‘Success Regime’ into North and West Devon to deal with a projected overspend. There are also plans being produced for each of the 44 footprints into which NHS England has divided the country; one of which is Devon, including Plymouth, Torbay, Exeter and North Devon Hospitals. In September, Devon’s Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) was leaked to the BBC, and Spotlight broadcast what we had been fearing: • 400 beds to be cut in Devon, • The nursing establishment reduced by 11%, • North Devon to lose its obstetric service, stroke service, special care baby unit This will result in A and E being downgraded to an ‘urgent care facility’ We have held assemblies: in June with 150 people, then in August with 500. A coach load of people went to Exeter on 19th September to the Success Regime’s offices at Newcourt House, and to attend the County Council Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee. By the time you read this, we will have had an even bigger ‘Seeing Red’ event on 22nd October in Barnstaple. The Gazette and the North Devon Journal, Spotlight and ITV local news have been amazing in their campaign
of support. Keep reading and watching them to see what is happening.
Five ways you can help:

Incredulity at the Secretary of State’s Report
I
have read, with increasing incredulity, the report which came back from the Secretary of State’s committee investigating the Torrington case. What struck me most forcibly was the sentence, “The evaluation concluded that the new model was as good or better quality in terms of health and social care outcomes than the service that had existed before”. The independent Tucker Report and Devon County Council’s task force report both stated there was no evidence on which to base this claim. “Despite evaluation data demonstrating positive outcomes from the test of change, public concern about the future development of community services in the area and more widely remains.” From this claim, you have to ask yourself has this committee read the evidence our town submitted in the 26-page STITCH Report, or the 17 patient case histories submitted? The answer is NO! At the end of the report, there are 18 documents submitted by the NHS and 13 submitted by the DCC Scrutiny Committee, but nothing from our town. This is a decision made without any evidence submitted by the people of this town, and thus, in my view, lacks validity. Even taking the report’s conclusions
“This is a decision made without any evidence submitted by the people of this town, and thus, in my view, lacks validity.” as they stand, the Secretary of State has clearly identified there is a case for the NHS to address, and it sets out future steps that need to be taken, by scrutiny and the NHS. Strange then that Cllr. Richard Westlake, Chairman of DCC’s Scrutiny Committee, appeared on Spotlight on 7th October and stated, “It’s the end of the road in relation to the Scrutiny Committee pursuing Torrington”. In Torrington we do not see this as the end of the road, rather just another bumpy bit which, in the last two months, has turned into a fight for our NHS in Devon. This in turn is part of a wider fight for our NHS across England. If you Google ‘Save

A Breath of Shamanic Wisdom - Introduction to a Most Ancient Tradition
S
hamanism has its origins worldwide amongst the indigenous people sometimes known as ‘The First Nations’; the knowledge and wisdom of how to live and work in harmony and balance is deeply rooted within their culture. Sadly, with the pace of our modern world a sense of wellbeing is often difficult to achieve. I am trained in traditional Shamanic healing and for the last 10 years have been on a committed path to go deeper into understanding the role of a Shaman and how we can integrate their knowledge and wisdom into a modern world. I draw on the grounded First Nations teachings to support individuals and organisations experiencing significant change. How can core Shamanic teachings support your business? Rotary’s Young Citizen & Young Musician Competitions
W
e’ve two exciting competitions to announce-. Firstly the Young Musician competition which is open to those aged up to 18 years in either vocal or instrumental sections; and secondly our Young Citizen which is for those aged up to 25 years. As with all the Rotary competitions, entry is free. You might even get to the National Final! Heats for the Young Musician will be held at Great Torrington School on 9th November – please contact Pat Grimwood-Taylor (email pat@ grimwood-taylor.com) or Mr Robilliard at GTS for information. The Young Citizen competition recognises outstanding achievements in the community; for example in fundraising, voluntary work, raising awareness of a particular issue (like Nikita Bawden who won our award last year for her exemplary courage and work to highlight bullying) or being a ‘champion’ in some area of school or community life. Further information, entry forms etc., can be obtained from Rotary Secretary David Large (email david@ashley-manor.co.uk).

I
n a fix with your broken electrical items and gadgets? Time to get them fixed for free at a special event to be held at IntaGR8, The Old School Rooms, EX39 2BU on Saturday November 19th. Recycle Devon is putting on a series of REPAIR IT events across the county for householders to bring along their broken electrical appliances, including computers, to be fixed by local menders. The Torridge event will take place in Bideford. Organised in conjunction with Bideford Sustainability Group (BSG), the event will run from 10am-12:30pm. Repairs will be carried out on a first come, first served basis so please be prepared to wait, and please note that they won’t be able to fix CRT TVs or monitors, electric blankets or microwaves, for safety reasons. Emma Croft, Re-use Project Co-ordinator added, ‘Research shows that more than 75% of the small electrical items that come into recycling centres could be back up and running if they were repaired. To find out more or to volunteer as a mender, please get in touch with me on 07966 566435 or via emma.croft@devon.gov.uk’
Remembrance Concert Friday 11th November, 7.30pm St. Michael and All Angels Church, Torrington
P
lease join us to remember those who fought, and those who gave their lives for our country; focusing this year on the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, where countless soldiers on both sides lost their lives. We try to remember that this was hailed as the ‘war to end all wars’ and yet, in numerous places around the world, power struggles seem never ending. We welcome the wearing of uniforms and decorations at this concert, and any other mark of respect you wish to make. There will be donations to the Royal British Legion, who engage in a vital role supporting service men and women past and present, during very difficult times and the Church fund, to help secure this magnificent building at the heart of our town. Torrington in Bloom Wins Silver-Gilt Again!
N
o-one can criticise us for being inconsistent! At the Britain in Bloom results day at Taunton County Cricket Club, Great Torrington achieved Silver-Gilt again, which was a very good result. We were hoping to get Gold this year because we had completed all the tasks we had listed, but the judges on the day thought otherwise. There were also some ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards for community groups; namely the Dartington Fields Residents’ Association; Tarka Valley Railway; First Torrington Rainbows and the Secret Memorial Garden, so well done and let’s see the good work continuing. Particular praise was given to the cleanliness and tidiness of the town centre; the Conservative Club gardens; the new planters outside Sydney House and the sustainable planting of the flowerbeds at the entrance to the car park. RHS Garden Rosemoor was praised for its community allotment scheme and our community gardening groups, such as the potato competition, best garden competition and the Rainbows also received praise. We should feel some pride in the consistency of our little town’s results; a big thank you to all of you who have supported us over the past year. And now, the results of our Best Garden Competition, which again was very closely fought and as Chair, I had to make an ‘executive decision’ because one group was tied for first place! Category 1 Best Display Business/Shop - Conservative Club Category 2 Best Display Public House/Club/Restaurant - Conservative Club Category 3 Best Display No Front Garden - Tarka Outdoor Pursuits Category 4 Best Display Group 3+ Properties - Kitchener’s Row Category 5 Best Large Garden - 88 New Street Category 6 Best Small Garden/courtyard/balcony - Conservative Club Category 7 Best Display Public Area - Pannier Market (Vicarage Nursery) Category 8 Best Display Youth Group/Young Person u18 - 3rd Torrington Brownies The Tony Welch Trophy for the Best display from all categories - 88 New Street These are excellent results again, with two new entries winning their respective categories, namely Tarka Outdoor Pursuits and 88 New Street. We saw some lovely gardens and displays on the day, keep up the good work – Torrington looks all the better for it! Cherry Hammon, Chair Torrington in Bloom Tel: 01805 625788

The Cavaliers Receive The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service
Berry Castle Quiz Night
What are Assistance Dogs?
IT Support Volunteers Needed at Torrington Library!
O
n Monday 26 September a group from the Cavaliers travelled to County Hall in Exeter for the official presentation of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The award was presented by David Fursdon Esq., the Lord Lieutenant of Devon, on behalf Her Majesty the Queen. Ten Cavaliers attended the ceremony, at which two other QAVS awards were presented, along with six British Empire Medals to other organisations and individuals. It was an honour to see so many other groups receive recognition for all the voluntary work they put in. Cavaliers’ Chairman Steve young said, “it was a great privilege to accept this award which recognises not only the work done by the Cavaliers over the past 46 years, but also the support and encouragement we receive for the community of Great Torrington”. Following the presentation we met up with more Cavaliers who had made the trip down to Exeter and enjoyed a sociable, slow journey home with several pit stops. Steve Young

ssistance Dogs UK is a coalition of seven assistance dog charities. Over 7,000 disabled people in the UK rely on an assistance dog to help with practical tasks - offering emotional support and independence. ADUK provides a kite-mark of excellence in assistance dog training. All ADUK dogs adhere to the highest training and welfare standards as set out by Assistance Dogs International. Information can also be found at www.assistancedogs.org.uk. Businesses can look for the kite-mark which is displayed on the dog’s harness and/or jacket. The handler can also be asked to show their formal identification booklet, for confirmation.

Self-Build Housing in Torridge
T
orridge District Council is investigating how self-build can help more local people meet their housing needs. This is being done by: * Setting up and maintaining a register of people who want to build or have their own home built * Identifying sites which may be suitable for self-build * This work is being done in conjunction with Devon Rural Housing Partnership based at Devon Communities Together
What is Self-Build?
Self-build can be undertaken in different ways: * Design and build a home yourself * Design a house and have it built for you (you might do the finishing touches yourself) * Build a number of houses as a group or community self-build * Use a custom house builder who can provide a serviced building plot and may also provide a design and build service to create the home you want All of these options may not be possible in your area, so please indicate which options you would consider.
Happy Birthday to Torrington’s Community Food Bank
as economies of scale and skills can be shared among the group. Obviously this approach can take more time and organisation but can help those without building experience or knowledge. Any self-build project must comply with normal planning requirements.

Monkleigh Primary School Appeals for Funds to Support Pupil with Brain Injury
J
ulia Grigg has been a pupil with us since she started at age four in reception, and is from a local family who farm in Monkleigh. Julia is now 10. Julia collapsed at home just before Easter and initially was taken to Barnstaple hospital and then air lifted to the children’s hospital in Bristol. She had a bleed on the brain and was in a coma for a long time, she had to undergo several operations to
“She returned to school in September; however she becomes fatigued very quickly, gets emotional, struggles to deal with too many people at once and finds it difficult to process too much information.” reduce the swelling and then an operation to repair the damage. It transpired that Julia had a genetic birth defect that resulted in the veins in her head going in the wrong directions and being twisted together, these had to be removed, and with them part of her brain. Julia is now home and is making a remarkable recovery. She returned to school in September; however she becomes fatigued very quickly, gets emotional, struggles to deal with too many people at once and finds it difficult to process too much information. She will need regular time out in a quiet room away from the hustle and bustle of the classroom; to rest and recover. Without this she will not be able to cope with school.
18
We are a small school and have no quiet spaces that we can use. Therefore we are looking to build a purpose built ‘summer house style’ room, that we can fit out as a sensory room, with lighting, seating and other sensory equipment to help Julia. We would be very grateful for any money you could give us towards this invaluable room. We also have other children with a range of needs who will be able to benefit from this room over many years to come. Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story. Art on Friday – Why Not Join?
H
i, to all artists out there. Are you looking to take up art, start again after a break or just carry on painting; then why not join us? We are a well-established, informal group, meeting from 10.30am to 2.30pm, usually every fortnight, at the Plough Arts Centre, Torrington. The Gallery at the Plough is a great place to paint; always plenty of ideas to be had from their latest exhibition. We cover different subjects each session and benefit from each other’s experience and skills. The year is punctuated by an exhibition; the occasional workshop hiring a professional artist; venturing outside to paint in the summer and free sessions to do your own thing! Interested? See the Crier Diary for meeting dates or call Hazel on 01805 623757 for further info. Watch out for our exhibition in the Learning Centre at RHS Rosemoor, viewing from Sunday 27th November until Saturday 7th January. A great opportunity to buy original artwork at affordable prices.

era is an Asian Shepherd who is about 8 years old and was abandoned by the people that had had her since a puppy. We picked her up from the pound where she was due to be put to sleep. She is very affectionate but a little nervous of other dogs, although when introduced properly she will play nicely. Sadly the original owners cut off her ears and her tail - apparently this is tradition in Lithuania where the original owners came from. Bera was returned to the rescue as her new owners rehomed two dogs together but they didn’t get on; so Toffee stayed and Bera came back. She is a big softy but does need a home that has experience of large breed dogs and would prefer to be the only dog so that she can get all the cuddles. If you can offer her a home please give call Clare on 07825 314 475.
“Bonfire Night. Sadly these days it doesn’t just seem to be just 5th November, but lasts for at least a month...” even puts the radio on; I am quite partial to the Archers! Mum also has a good supply of Pet Remedy and I usually have an Adaptil collar on. Both of these can easily be bought off the internet or at your local pet store and using them early does help us to relax as they create a calming atmosphere. This month I am appealing for Pounds4Hounds, as sadly some of the dogs that were saved from the pound last month are quite poorly. Little Molly has been very ill and is in need of a CT scan which is going to cost £850. A lot of money when you add it to our ever-growing vet bill of over £2,000. Aunty Lynne has set up a Just Giving
page where you can donate on line www. justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/k9focus/pounds4hounds or donations can be sent via PayPal to lynne@k9focus. co.uk. K9focus is a voluntary charity and receives no official funding, so your support, however small, is vital to keep the rescue going and ensure that more dogs like me are saved from being put to sleep. As always our volunteers are busy doing their bit to help raise funds and they will be at Cornwall Farmers in Bideford on Saturday 5th November from 10am-2pm, with a great tombola and home-made jams and chutneys on sale. You will also be able to get a copy of our 2017 Rescue Calendar, a fantastic Christmas present at only £10, so please do come down and meet them and of course I will be there! Unfortunately Peanut and Diesel did not manage to find their forever homes last month, both still only puppies at just over 14 months. Please visit our website to see their profiles and help find them a home. Right that’s it from me and I am off to try out my new den. Hope to see you all on the 5th. Miss Jessica

What is the Long Cobble-covered Hump in the Churchyard?
riends of Torrington Bluecoat have had a great start to the school fundraising year, already holding several really successful events! Our September cake sale raised £79.80, and we’d like to say a big thank you to our bakers and for all the kind donations we received. Our first ever KS1 Disney film night was brilliant; the children loved it and we raised a massive £154.84, such a fab kick-off to the year. We’ll have had our harvest disco and a coffee afternoon by the time this is in print, and these events will hopefully have been as brilliant as they always are. We welcomed some new members on to our committee at our AGM, and are excited about our 2016/17 team. We are always happy to have new volunteers, so please come along to one of our meetings, or email FOTB@bluecoat-primary.org. You can follow Great Torrington Bluecoat Primary School on Facebook, where we will post about FoTB events and news, or you can have a look at the FOTB part of the school web page. We’ve got some excellent events coming up: Scholastic book fair, bingo, Christmas disco, and of course our brilliant Christmas fayre. Our FoTB bingo night – Thursday 24th November (doors open 6.45pm, eyes down 7.30pm) - is open to the general public, so if you love to play please come along and join in

f you’ve not already done so, please read our introductory article in last month’s Crier, page 26. There are shared challenges to small towns across Europe and North America; as industries have died, factories have closed and - for better or worse - countries have to compete in a globalised market. We are researching other towns’ responses to see what we can learn. In 1995 a substantial study - ‘Torrington’s Great Future’ was produced by the Civic Trust Regeneration Unit. It led to the founding of the Community Development Trust; obtaining funding for the Pannier Market and 1646 which still benefit the town today. In 2003 a Community Action Plan was compiled
“We propose to collate the concerns and proposals... with a view to building on the good work that has been done.” by the Town Council. In 2008 the Great Torrington Town Plan was produced by The Market & Coastal Towns Initiative. In reviewing these projects, we note that concerns and proposals have been repeated over the years e.g. the creamery site, affordable housing and community transport. We propose to collate the concerns and proposals that still apply to Torrington, with a view to building on the good work that has been done. We are consulting with people who are involved in community activities and organisations on how best to progress with this work. Torridge District Council has offered a project officer as our link into whatever advice, support and contacts can be provided by that Council. In due course, our proposals for specific tasks or projects will be discussed with the Town Council for their approval and further recommendations. We are looking for a couple of people to join our core group, which meets monthly to review progress and discuss next steps. If you are interested, or know someone who might be interested, please email us at the address below. We are keen to hear from people who have a view on this project and how it is conducted, whether or not you wish to be involved regularly. Thank you. Great Torrington Futures Group: Cllrs. hanks to the generous support of the Torrington Arms we enjoyed an excellent quiz on Friday September 30th. The quiz raised over £400 to support various projects at the library over the next year and was enjoyed by all who were there. Thanks once again to the Torrington Arms, who provided an excellent venue, much appreciated snacks, and a very well organised quiz from Stuart Davey. Chris Porter, Friends of Torrington Library

British Native Wild Flowers to Grow in Your Garden Inula helenium
T
his tall, stately plant has probably been growing in the British Isles for several thousand years and is now regarded as a native. It actually originates from Asia, but has been introduced across Western Europe and beyond to North America and Canada. The common name for Inula is ‘Elecampane’, but there are at least eight other localised names for it. Elecampane was greatly valued as a medicinal herb which aided digestion, and the Romans used the roots as a candied sweetmeat. During the middle ages, the candied roots were sold as little flat, pink sugary cakes, which were sucked to alleviate asthma and indigestion. The Tudors also used it to treat coughs and other chest ailments and this use continued into the early 20th Century. Inula helenium is a hardy perennial and can grow to a height of 2.5 metres (about eight feet) with a one metre spread, so it is an architectural plant. The flowers appear during July and August, being bright yellow, rather raggedy daisies, several per stem and being good for cutting. The leaves are large, oval, toothed and downy underneath. The entire plant dies right back in winter. Propagation is easy, in fact it is advisable not to allow the plant to run to seed because it can become invasive, so dead-head regularly! Sow seeds in spring, just covering them, and prick out when large enough to handle. Harden off and plant in moisture retaining soil at the back of your border – it may need some support to protect it from high winds. Fleur
First Thursday Writers Group
O
ur October meeting was focused on the topic of ‘Decline and Fall’ and, although we were only small in numbers, we were treated to a good selection of interesting pieces of writing. After discussing how we could be involved with Libraries Unlimited, who now run Torrington Library, we heard a beautiful, atmospheric description of an October evening in a poem entitled ‘Late Autumn’s Decline’. This was followed by a piece written from the perspective of one of the few survivors of the sinking of the Mary Rose, and then another lovely little poem. One of the newer members of our group read us a very cleverly written poem about the journey of a meteor to become a stone on the earth’s surface. Finally, ‘Kathryn Howard: No Other Will Than His’ offered us an insight into the last night of this young queen’s life. Our next meeting is on Thursday 3rd November at Torrington Conservative Club at 7.30pm, when the subject will be ‘The Supernatural’. For further information please see our website at torringtonwriters.co.uk. Nikki Whiting

n the gallery this month we have an exhibition of hand-hooked rugs entitled ‘These Are Not Doormats’. It is a joyous celebration of the increasingly popular craft of Rughooking. Probably originating in Yorkshire in the 1800’s, rugs were originally made from rags and old clothing (hence the term ‘Rag Rugs’) and used to provide warm floor and bed coverings for people who could not afford to buy new. Rughookers and rughooking groups from all over Devon and Cornwall are contributing to this colourful extravaganza, made all the more amazing by the fact that most of these beautifully crafted creations are made from recycled garments. On Saturday 12th November there will be an open day and ‘Hook In’ from 11am -3pm, to which any rughookers, wouldbe rughookers or just anyone interested in art, craft, textiles and colour is invited. Exhibition runs from 4th - 26th November. Downstairs in the café we have paintings by Elisabeth Medley-Smith ‘And God Created Cadmium’. Elisabeth has returned to Torrington from France after a forty five year absence; since her return she has digressed from painting the French landscape and her exhibition here is still life, with the inspiration from oranges, and the colour pigment of cadmium orange. Our workshops this month have got a bit of a Christmas theme with Christmas fabric tree decorations printed with handmade linoblocks with Annabel Hill on Friday 4th November 10am-4pm; Christmas ‘proddy’ wreath workshop with Jill Denton on Friday 18th November and drop-in willow Christmas decorations

workshop with Mary Jannaway on Saturday 3rd December from 10am - 2pm. If you wanted to make a special gift for someone, we have an extra date for the silver rings workshop with Mary Myers on Tuesday 1st November 10am – 4pm, as the October date was so popular. If you have been inspired by the rug hooking work in the gallery, you can come along and learn the basic techniques on Saturday 26th November with Jill Denton, at her ‘Rughooking for Beginners’ Workshop. Don’t miss our opening evening of this year’s original gifts exhibition on Wednesday 30th November at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and celebrate with mulled wine and music and hopefully a bit of shopping…
e are screening three highprofile movies this month: the remake of Ben-Hur, the much-requested Captain Fantastic and The Girl on the Train. Other films will be less well known, but just as good. Set the Thames on Fire, the debut feature film from a young British film-maker has been described as “a distinctly dystopian fairytale” and will be a feast for the eyes for fans of sci-fi and fantasy. Dare to be Wild is the story of Irishwoman Mary Reynold’s journey from rank outsider to winner of a Gold Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show. We have had requests for more matinée screenings during the winter. It’s not always possible to fit them in, but we have two 2pm screenings on Wednesdays in November: Two Women, a Russian film based on Turgenev’s play A Month in the Country featuring Ralph Fiennes speaking Russian! And Things to Come, an acclaimed French film starring Isabelle Huppert. Isabelle Huppert is joined by old favourite Gérard Depardieu in Valley of Love, a poetic and poignant exploration of love and loss set in the blistering heat and alien beauty of Death Valley. At the end of the month there’s a Finnish/ Estonian film The Fencer set in Estonia in the 1950s. On a good day the subtitles are clear and legible. Give it a go! For dates, times and details please pick up a ‘November & December Films’ flier at The Plough, the library or the TIC. Or check out our web site: www. theploughartscentre.org.uk, where you can also book tickets.

Years 7 & 8 category First Prize: They say
They say they don’t, don’t spread hate over the colour of a man’s skin. They say they support the forty fourth president, but he still stands behind a glass of discrimination, whilst they insult his memory. They say they’re sorry you died, but they were the ones who spat on your grave and killed your brothers who dared follow in your footsteps. They say they disrespect the men who bundled you into wooden prisons that floated you into chains. Instead of breaking chains, they oiled them. They say they only fired in defence, but no weapon was ever found. Now another family suffers. They say they do not follow the hooded clan, but they were the ones who killed the mockingbird and hunted you down like a disease eroding their country They say they are sorry that a man no longer has a dream, but we can dream on for him. You asked for nothing but equality; you were met with brutish violence, as they preached men to hate

Torrington Rugby Club
S
o, how many local ‘friendly’ games can you fit into one season? The new Dave Butt Memorial Cup has provided us with a good taster for the season ahead, by playing four meaningful games against our near neighbours and friends from North Tawton and South Molton. Ilfracombe were also due to be involved in this new cup, but unfortunately pulled out of the competition at the very start. Three games into this competition and everyone had beaten each other; with all three teams standing equal in the table. This can only point to a really competitive Devon Division One this year. The league season starts on 5th November away in Exeter, with the return fixture bringing the season to a climax at home on 11th March. I am pleased to report that the final game of the round-robin series went Torrington’s way, beating North Tawton 25-17, so at the time of writing this article we are looking forward to the semi-final in Exeter. If we are successful, we will be in the Dave Butt Memorial Cup Final, which will be held at Dave Butt’s ‘home’ club, Barnstaple on 23rd October – watch out in next month’s Crier for an update. It would be great to see as many as possible up at Donnacroft to support your local rugby team: * November 12th South Molton 1st XV - 2.30pm league * November 12th Cullompton 3rd XV - 2.15pm friendly * November 19th Bude 2nd XV - 2.30pm friendly * November 26th North Tawton 1st XV - 2.30pm league * November 26th North Tawton 2nd XV - 2.15pm friendly As you can see from the list above, we are delighted to have a much more active 2nd XV this year with good numbers training and playing on a regular basis. This can only mean a better future for the whole club; thank you to all of the support team in making these games come to fruition. We still have plenty of room to take anyone else interested in taking up the beautiful game, whether you have played before, or are a total beginner to the game. Please call Simon Pluckrose – 07445 465 459 or Adrian Avery – 07780 624 242 for further information. If anyone would like to become involved on or off the pitch, please contact me on the details below. You can hire our facilities for various purposes or sponsor us in a variety of ways, all help is, as always, greatly appreciated. C’mon Torrie. Winter All Lit Up at RHS Garden Rosemoor
T
his year, for the first time, visitors can enjoy the winter garden illuminated by hi-tech, dynamic, constantly colour-changing lighting to provide a magical trail around the trees and shrubs. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays the gardens will be open until 8.30pm to maximise the lighting and on those days garden entry will be half price after 4pm. The Garden Kitchen Restaurant will be serving simple family suppers, and the shop will open until 7.30pm. The launch of the illuminations coincides with the start of the annual Winter Sculpture exhibition and there will also be an indoor live theatre production of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Snow Queen”: two performances on both Saturday and Sunday. This is family Christmas theatre and as audiences are limited to 100 seats, early booking is advised (RHS Events Booking line is 0203 176 5830). For more information on events at RHS Garden Rosemoor visit www.rhs.org. uk/rosemoor. Normal garden admission applies (free for RHS members). Image: RHS Garden Rosemoor
