e wait with anticipation to hear how much has been raised from the tremendous Cavaliers’ Bonfire of the fictitious village of Trumpton. Great Torrington is lucky to have such a public spirited group working for us and I have nominated the Torrington Cavaliers for the Community Group award run by the North Devon Journal. Barnstaple Fair Proclamation was held in the historic Guildhall, Cllr Sue Mills kindly accompanied me.There were the usual speeches and toasts to the Prosperity of Barnstaple, and to the Queen; and then a march around the town followed by lunch. The following day I was back in Barnstaple for the Rotary Fair lunch, at the kind invitation of the President of Rotary Cllr Sue Mills. Great Torrington has had busy Saturdays recently, with collections for the Food Bank and signatures to pause the consultation for the closure of Community Hospital Beds. We must support this campaign or we will have a lesser service for those in need of care, I am pleased to see so many yellow posters in windows. It was also great to see the Town Hall open to the public; to show it off to councillors

from other areas and to Lord and Lady Clinton, who posed for a photograph in front of their ancestor. It made a memorable picture. Cllr Margaret Brown, my deputy, and I had a marvellous day at Dartmouth College to see Torrington in Bloom receive another Silver Gilt. The allotment scheme at Rosemoor received a cup for their work. Well done Torrington in Bloom! Great Torrington is creating a Neighbourhood Plan which will sit alongside the District Local Plan. We are holding a series of meetings over the next few weeks and if you are interested do come and join us. My next Mayor’s Charity event is a Quiz in the Plough Gallery on Friday 20th November at 7.45pm. Please come with your team of six or less. It is £5 per person which includes a drink and light refreshments. Our website is www. great-torringtontowncouncil.gov.uk. My telephone number is 01805 622409 and email address cathrinesimmons@ hotmail.co.uk. Cathrine Simmons, Mayor of Great Torrington

Community Hospital Beds - GPs Share Their Concerns in an Open Letter to: Dr Alison Diamond, Chief Executive of NDHT; Mr Geoffrey Cox, MP; Mr Peter Heaton-Jones, MP; District Councils Councillors; NEW Devon CCG; North Devon GPs; North Devon Practice Managers; North Devon Journal; North Devon Gazette; Torridgeside PPGs; Trustees of Friends of BMC

‘Safe and effective care within the budget’ Consultation

W

e, the undersigned GPs, would like to register our grave concerns over patient safety regarding the forthcoming plans of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) to close community beds, either in totality or part of the locality, in an unprecedented move before this coming winter as proposed in your current consultation paper. The current consultation process for “safe and effective care within the budget” has been experienced as a hasty cost improvement process given the far-reaching safety implications of the proposed changes. Whilst we recognise the current context of austerity, we are concerned that the untried, untested closures of so many community hospital beds in this area could prove dangerous for a significant population of patients who might need to rely on community beds to bridge the gap between acute hospital care and their homes when they become severely ill this winter. The population in North Devon is 166,093 with 1555 people living in residential care homes. There are 4 community hospitals in Holsworthy, Bideford, South Molton and Ilfracombe which has 10 community beds but is temporarily closed. The current 64 beds in 3 community hospitals are fully occupied. East of the Water near Bideford and Ilfracombe are among the most deprived areas in the country with complex health and social needs. Patients in our rural areas will have more difficulties in getting transport to North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) in Barnstaple should all the community hospital beds be closed. Patients in Holsworthy areas will have to travel 35 miles to NDDH should Holsworthy community hospital be closed. We have particular concerns over the safety of these proposals that are being made in the absence of concrete plans for bolstering and investing in safe staffing levels of the existing very stretched community nursing service. Vulnerable patients this winter could find themselves with inadequate community nursing, physiotherapy and other ancillary services, as well as an over-stretched primary care GP services which will be forced into taking clinical responsibility in an inadequate and underresourced system. The current time-frame does not suggest any contingency or risk and impact assessment to account for laying down sufficient and timely investment in community services and staff to prevent this. It must be recognised that North Devon District Hospital (NDDH) currently faces frequent bed shortages, resulting with patients at times having to be placed temporarily in the day surgery unit, overnight in bed state emergencies with inadequate facilities as in a normal ward and delayed admissions. Closing community hospitals beds will further compound this situation and may also affect the safe running of NDDH itself. NEW Devon CCG’s suggested strategic direction is for a timely process of reduction in the numbers of community beds shared over a number of community hospital sites, with money saved by reduction of community beds reinvested in community staffing. This is a very different proposal. If staff cannot be attracted to work at the community hospitals, it is unlikely they will be recruited in a timely manner to provide sufficient community nursing cover to the local population, resulting in unsafe levels of staff to cover patients discharged from NDDH in the community, often very early in the course of their illness with multiple needs, both medical and social. Similarly, we are not convinced by the proposal of a community bed unit based at NDDH to be established in time for the winter prior to the closure of all community hospital beds, nor the proposal that a “Frailty Consultant” will be recruited in time to provide clinical guidance and leadership to those proposed beds at NDDH reserved for community patients. NDHT has had severe difficulties and is unable despite multiple advertisements in replacing recently resigned Care of Older People Consultants. North Devon population will end up with no community hospital beds, no consultant with the appropriate skills to provide clinical skills and direction and an over-stretched community service in addition to an acute hospital with bed shortages over the winter. It has been suggested that the closure of Torrington Community hospital was a success. The truth of the matter is that these patients were often placed in other community hospitals which are still open and evidence shows these community beds are needed. We agree that patient safety is paramount and as such we do not support the current “safe effective care within budget” plans and their time-frame. We propose NDHT engage all stakeholders including the CCG and staff for a timely and proper consultation to find the best and safe solution for our population. 45 Bideford and North Devon GPs.

STITCH Update

Please send letters to torrington.crier@ gmail.com, or The Crier, Castle Hill, Torrington., EX38 8AA.

No Choice - Just Dictat!

Dear Torrington and District Reader So there you have it!! On the 3rd July 2013 the NHS peremptorily informed the residents that the Torrington Community Hospital would close within weeks. The populace was assured – time and time again – that the sole reason was that the building was under used and that it was impossible to obtain staff. The campaigners rejected those reasons at that time, and claimed that it was all due to finance and that the building eventually would be closed, as would other hospitals. This was vehemently denied by the Trust minions We now have the Trust exposed, in that their end game has been announced and, as predicted by STITCH in 2013, both Bideford and Ilfracombe community hospital beds are also to close – (probably Axminster, Crediton and others will follow, as night follows day). The Torrington process was independently exposed as ill thought through; decisions illegally concluded in that there had been no prior consultation, no assessment of existing services carried out, to prove – as the law demanded – that the new service would be as good, or better than, that which preceded it.

Dear friends. Here we are now in Autumn after a disappointing Summer. I hope this letter finds you in good health and that you will continue that way. STITCH met with the Task Group from the DCC Health and Wellbeing Committee on the 22nd September. This was as a result of our request that they come to Torrington to hear patients’ stories first hand and in complete confidence. It was distressing for relatives and patients to relive difficult, and for some, relatively recent experiences, so at their request a member of STITCH sat alongside to support them through the process. If you feel you would like to meet the Task group to share your healthcare concerns, you can still do so as they are visiting again this month. You can contact me in complete confidence and I can make the appointment and support you if you wish. You will now be aware that Bideford and Ilfracombe Tyrell Hospitals have had their beds axed, and that Holsworthy and South Molton are the only community hospitals who will keep their beds. However in my opinion this is just a short reprieve before they are closed too. What on earth will happen should we experience an influenza epidemic this winter? The remaining hospitals will not be able to cope, and we do not have enough carers or nurses to ensure the safety of patients. If you have any concerns, wish to see the Task Group or simply want a private chat - all in complete confidence - please contact me on 01805 624375. Please take care Margaret Brown, STITCH Personnel of the Trust, and of the CCG, have disseminated incorrect information, used obfuscation and/or any other methods, including minutes of meetings being incomplete and incorrect, to frustrate the will of the people, of whom, you may recall, in a Parish Poll over 99% voted to keep the hospital beds open. Infamously they, (Drs. W and D and others), repeatedly claimed that 96 people had been saved from hospital under the new system, when in fact the figure was a figment of the imagination of a pen pusher preparing yet another kiteflying document.

They and others will no doubt receive their MBEs, and/or inflation proof pensions, whilst the sick, the old and the vulnerable will be paying £60 plus for taxis to visit equally old and vulnerable spouses and partners in hospitals miles away, sometimes, as has already happened, missing their loved ones’ dying moments. May their bureaucratic consciences always be nagged for ripping the heart out of the communities that built and supported their cottage hospitals for over 100 years. Tony Easton

t could be a soap opera, with its story lines of jealousy and family breakdown. It could be a fairy tale, with its kings, lost princess and a prince in disguise. It could be a comedy or a tragedy or a romance. In fact it is all of these. It is The Winter’s Tale - and it just

Torrington Players is marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death a little early, with a passionate, tragic, funny and magical version of The Winter’s Tale. Seventeen actors, from original to new members, are involved in the ambitious production - which aims to tell the tale in a way that will engage and offer something a bit different to modern audiences. ‘Shakespeare wrote plays to be performed - it is such a different experience to reading him in the classroom. And to be part of the audience of a live performance is more exciting again. The characters speak to you, they never pretend you aren’t there. Actors and audience are all in it together,’ said Jean Evans-Loude, chair of the Players. The Winter’s Tale takes place at the Plough Arts Centre on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th, and Saturday 21st November. Performances start at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from the Plough box office on 01805 624624. Director, Ros Wehner

I

am sure you will all be delighted to hear that Great Torrington once again achieved a Silver Gilt award at the Britain in Bloom SW Regional Finals on the 24th September. What’s more, our two ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ entries, both brand new this year, received ‘Developing’ certificates (which is just two below Outstanding). As a further bonus to Torrington, RHS Garden Rosemoor received the West Country TV Cup for the most Outstanding Specific Project, which is the community allotment project (it is currently advertised in the October Crier). The Conservative Club was also nominated again under the Best Business awards, but was unfortunately pipped at the post! Overall the judges’ comments were very positive, with particular praise going to the tidiness and cleanliness of the streets and the lack of graffiti! The judges were impressed with the planting of flowerbeds and planters in the town, that the heritage of the town is well documented, and they liked the fact that the seats and bollards had been painted in the town’s colours! The school potato competition was also highly praised. Concerns raised were that we needed to involve local businesses in sponsoring projects or starting projects themselves, to ‘green up’ the town. On behalf of Torrington in Bloom, I should like to thank all of you who participated in this year’s entry, it is much appreciated and I hope that we can continue to work together to maintain and improve our standards next year. Now on to our Best Garden competition which, again, was a hard fought competition with one or two surprises, but we hope not too many disappointments. Don’t forget that a winning garden is one that holds interest throughout the year, not just for a couple of weeks over summer. Here are the results: * Best Business/Shop - Dartington Crystal (Gold) * Best Pub/Club/Restaurant - Conservative Club (Gold) * Best Property No Front Garden - Conservative Club (Gold) * Best Group of 3 or more Properties - Kitchener’s Row (Gold) * Best Large Garden - 9 Hatchmoor (Gold) * Best Small Garden/Courtyard/Balcony - 3 Kitchener’s Row (Gold) * Best Public Area - St Michael’s Churchyard Baskets (Silver Gilt) * Best Youth Group - 3rd Torrington Brownies (Silver Gilt) * The overall winner of the Tony Welch award was the Conservative Club Jolly well done to everyone who entered, marking was a bit tougher this year and again, a couple of the categories were very closely fought! The awards were presented by our Deputy Mayor, Cllr Margaret Brown, and the competition was judged by Sarah Chesters of RHS Rosemoor. Cherry Hammon, Chair, Torrington in Bloom, 01805 625788

01805 603324 Has Your Landlord Fitted Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors?

N

ew government regulations which will help keep private tenants safer – and potentially save more than 200 lives a year – have been welcomed by the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA). The new legislation means it will be compulsory for private landlords to fit smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in homes they rent out. Landlords who don’t comply could face fines of up to £5,000. The new law will require private landlords to have a working smoke alarm on each floor of their property and carbon monoxide detector in properties which burn solid fuel. Landlords must: Fit a smoke alarm on every storey; fit a carbon monoxide alarm in every room with a solid fuel burning appliance; and alarms tested and working at the start of each tenancy. Mark Cashin, Cheshire’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer and Chair of CFOA’s Home Safety Committee, said: “While death and injuries from fires have reduced considerably in recent years, the majority of victims continue to be those who are most vulnerable, often living in private rented accommodation. “This change will improve the safety of families and stop dozens of people from losing their lives to fire each year. ”

in a variety of themes to suit the type of woodland you wish to create. To find out what’s available, you can read all about the sizes, themes and species available in our packs, or even familiarise yourself with Native British trees before choosing.

If you are a school or community group in the UK who want to make a difference to your local environment, you could be eligible for our tree packs. Thanks to funding from our partners, our packs are available at no cost to you. We accept applications all year round, but we can only deliver trees twice a year – in March and November. Applications for this season are open, and all those eligible will receive their tree packs between 7-11 March 2016. Torrington Running Club Christmas & New Year

I

t’s that time of year again when we’re thinking about what we’re doing over the Christmas break and even New Year resolutions. How about kicking off Christmas by running the Torrington Christmas Caper? This year’s event will be on the 20th December at 11am. Starting at the Torrington Rugby Club, the challenging 9.5 mile run, which was previously voted Devon Race of the Year, takes in some of our beautiful local scenery including the commons, Taddiport and the Tarka Trail. What better way to work off your Christmas pud, even before you’ve eaten it. Fancy dress is an optional extra, but we usually see a few antlers, snowmen and the odd fairy. Yule love it! Have you thought about running but not been able to get going? Is more exercise a New Year’s resolution that you always think about but never get around to? Why not do something amazing in 2016 like a 5k, 10k or even half marathon race? Torrington AAC runs a walk/run group that gets you from couch potato up to 5k in 10 weeks, or even further if you’re up for the 10k challenge. Running is great; you get fitter, fresh air, new friends and, with a better diet, smaller, too. The next walk/run group starts on Wednesday 6th January 2016. The cost is £22 and you will receive a year’s membership to TAAC, 10 weekly walk/run sessions with a running coach and weekly coached sessions once you’ve completed the 10 week course. For more details email: torringtonaac@gmail.com. Michael Newcombe, Torrington AAC

Devon Libraries Home Library Service

A partnership between Devon Libraries and the Royal Voluntary Service

T

he Home Library Service delivers library books and audio books to people who, through ill health, injury or disability, cannot visit a library, or who are too frail to carry heavy books. There is no charge for this service. Specially trained and security checked Royal Voluntary Service volunteers discuss with the client the sort of books they would like to read. There is a wide range of fiction to choose from – romance, thrillers, adventure; and information books on many popular subjects. Particular authors and titles can be requested free of charge. Large print books and audio books are available for people with a visual impairment. The volunteer will choose books from a local library and arrange to deliver the books to the client’s home every few weeks at a mutually convenient time. The volunteers always wear RVS identity cards when visiting. For those people who love reading, or just browsing through books, but are often confined to their home, this free service offers a chance to have access to the library service as well as a visit from a friendly face on a regular basis. If you would like to join this much-valued and immensely rewarding service as a volunteer, or if you would like to receive the service, please contact the RVS Service Manager, Jackie Cleaver, for further details. Open Days at Torrington Hospital

O

n Tuesday 29th September the Trust held the first of a series of open days at Torrington hospital. This was an opportunity for members of the public to come find out what services are now running from the hospital, ask questions and meet the staff who provide services within the hospital and the community. This first open day was a real success, thank you to all of you who came along. We are really pleased about the feedback we have had. People have told us they really enjoyed coming and speaking to us, and finding out about the different services and how they can access them - especially the social services and voluntary service. Sarah Pike, Physiotherapist said “The event was a great success. It was lovely to be able to welcome people to the hospital and give people advice on falls and basic health & wellbeing. ” Another open day is planned for Thursday 26th November, from 10am to 3pm. Our focus at these days will be on self-protection, home safety, falls and balance. Do come along and see what we can offer you for your health and wellbeing.

Fishing Tackle & Shooting Supplies Archery, Binoculars, Clothing and more... 5 High Street EX38 8HU 01805 625832 Where was the Old Workhouse?

T

he system of indoor relief by means of workhouses dates from the early 17th century. Those who found themselves destitute towards the end of the century had their difficulties compounded by the Act of Settlement, which prevented people moving from one parish to another in order to find work. The accommodation of the Torrington poor house was totally inadequate, so in 1737 a new one was built on the north side of Calf Street, which served its purpose for nearly a century. Then in 1836/7 a

“There were 24 children aged under five, the youngest being just two weeks old. One child is listed as ‘illegitimate’, another as an ‘idiot’ and a third as an ‘imbecile’.” piece of land was bought on the south side of New Street on the western edge of town, for a new workhouse for 250 inmates. It was designed by Sampson Kempthorn, who was also the architect for workhouses at Axminster, Barnstaple, Crediton, Exeter, Okehampton and South Molton. An infirmary was added in 1867 and a chapel was built in the grounds behind the workhouse in 1870. A governor was appointed as well as a chaplain, medical officer and matron. In 1871 there were 113 inmates, twice as many women (32) as men (16) and twice as many children (65) as women. George Sellick was the governor, John Budd the porter and Elizabeth Williams the nurse. There was also a schoolmaster, Henry Nichols, and a schoolmistress, Emma Acford, for the 36 children listed as ‘scholars’. There were 24 children aged under five, the youngest being just

two weeks old. One child is listed as ‘illegitimate’, another as an ‘idiot’ and a third as an ‘imbecile’. Among the male inmates were a former mason, accountant, cabinet maker, innkeeper, farmer, railway labourer and nine agricultural labourers. Amongst the women were a former needlewoman, shoebinder, cook, plumber and glazier’s wife, 11 gloveresses and 13 servants. All had fallen on hard times, through lack of work or care from family, or general incapacity, and were unable to support themselves or their children. Such was life for the poor and disadvantaged before the welfare state. In 1894 there were around 95 inmates in the Torrington workhouse and by 1910 there were 48. An elderly woman, who was a child in the 1930s, remembers attending a concert and tea party each year which was held to raise funds for comforts for the occupants. Dr Bickford (after whom the Bickford Centre for the over 60s was named) was the star turn at the concerts and always sang ‘Widecombe Fair’. When the building ceased to be a workhouse it became the Torrington Public Assistance Institution. Then it was Torridge View nursing home and ‘housing with care’ – eight bungalows which were built where the chapel used to be. The old, rather forbidding workhouse building was demolished in the mid-1990s and the single storey Woodland Vale was built on the same site and opened in January 1997. This residential care home and day care centre is run by Devon County Council. Moira Brewer, an extract from Torrington Uncovered

There will be entertainment, refreshments, games, stalls, gift sales and of course no Christmas Fayre would be complete without a visit from the main man himself - Santa! nstant Images is a long established local embroidery business, undertaking embroidery work of all kinds from schoolwear to pieces for individuals, and local businesses wishing to personalise their workwear to promote their business. Instant Images has recently changed hands and is now owned and run by local couple Ian and Heather Hopkins. Heather said “this is a well-respected business and we are looking forward to building on the reputation gained over many years by Theresa, the previous owner, who has been so supportive during and after the handover.” As well as all the services above, Ian is planning to introduce a range of personalized gifts into the shop; to include mugs, glass and slate photo frames, keyrings and other small gifts.

Maid In Devon Tea Room Vintage-Style Tea Room & New Craft Workshops!

F

or many years I had dreamt of opening my own vintage-style tea room serving loose tea in beautiful china cups. In May this became a reality and I enjoy every minute of it. As well as a selection of gourmet teas, there is a choice of freshly ground coffees and delicious handmade cakes. A breakfast menu is available and light lunches are served until 3.15pm, using locally sourced ingredients. The tea room is now taking bookings for private tea parties (afternoon tea served on vintage tea stands), for birthdays, anniversaries, retirements etc., for up to 20 people. Christmas will soon be here and I love nothing more than giving handmade gifts. With this in mind I decided to have a Chat’n’Craft session every Friday 1.303.30pm when anyone can pop along with their own project to enjoy a creative afternoon with friendly company. On the second Tuesday of each month there will be a craft workshop for people to learn a new hobby. Horses and Colic

I

t is at this time of year that there will be an increase in colics in horses. This is because horses are stabled longer, and have less opportunity to carry out the natural activity of grazing and free exercise. A stabled horse is completely dependent on us for its feed and exercise. For horse owners, if possible, it is advisable to turn their horse out for a few hours each day. This enables the horse to exercise freely and to graze. If this is not possible the horse should be exercised every day, because they need exercise to help their digestive systems work properly. So what can be done to decrease the chances of horses getting colic? * Be sure your forage is of good quality – without access to pasture the horse is completely dependent on the forage you supply. Feed concentrates to the level of exercise the horse is getting – don’t overfeed. * Offer warm water a couple times a day and/or after exercising. In very cold weather horses will often reduce their water intake because they don’t like drinking very cold water and this reduced water intake can cause colic. They will drink more if you offer them lukewarm water when possible. * Signs of colic can be the horse looking at their flanks, kicking their belly, sweating, pawing at the ground, lying down and rolling. First Aid: • Remove any food that the horse could get at, encourage the horse to stand but do not force them to walk if they do not want to. • Try to move to a stable with a deep bed. • Contact your Vet immediately. And a quick worming reminder for horse owners! An autumn worming after the second frost is recommended at this time of year. Use a with a broad spectrum wormer that does roundworms, tapeworms, bots and encysted larvae. Remember always keep your worming to a minimum to avoid resistance developing in the worms to which your horse is exposed. Hatchmoor Vets

Rare Plant Returns to Northam Burrows

W

ater Germander has been found on Northam Burrows for the first time since 2011. This species is extremely rare and is restricted to just three sites across England. It is one of the reasons Northam Burrows has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

“This species is extremely rare and is restricted to just three sites across England.” Its disappearance caused great concern and was believed to have occurred due to the lack of open conditions and the spread of denser vegetation across the park in recent years. To tackle this, Torridge District Council received funding from Natural England through the Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) Scheme to carry out extensive scrub clearance and scrape work. The return of Water Germander is an early indication that this work is having the desired effect. It is hoped the other rare plants, that make Northam Burrows a unique environment, will also flourish in the conditions created. There will also be a chance for the community to get involved in the project. Volunteer events will take place this winter once the major works have been completed. For further information please contact the Burrows Centre on 01237 479708 or visit www.torridge.gov.uk/ northamburrows.

North Devon Record Office

T

he Record Office is now not subject to being used to accommodate County Staff displaced from the Civic Centre. At a meeting of the oversight and scrutiny committee of North Devon Council under the previous regime, a County Council representative admitted that no alternatives to using the Record

“This does not mean the Record Office will remain as it is, however. There is a sizeable cost to running the office and that has to be met.” Office had even been considered. Now it seems that they have been considered, and the County Council staff are to be accommodated in the annex to the Civic Centre. However, this does not mean the Record Office will remain as it is. There is a sizeable cost to running the office and that has to be met. At present this is being done by the County Council extending its grant, but that ran out in October 2015. It seems the South West Heritage Trust is involved in negotiations. From the outside it seems likely that the issue is not the NDRO archivist staff, (they have already been transferred to the Trust) but the remaining staff (of the library) and running costs and overheads. North Devon District Council are closely involved and Barnstaple Town Council have become involved latterly; it is now time for Torridge District Council to take up the issue as well. Jon Frayne

he members of The Rotary Club of Torrington wish to thank everyone for their outstanding support for our Popup Charity Shop; we were inundated with donations and at times besieged by customers. Our special thanks go to the ladies who volunteered their time; to Storage Solutions of Town Park who generously donated the shelving; to Tamar Trading for supply of materials and to Bob Marsden of BM Electrical for PAT testing the donated electrical items. In the two weeks we were open, we raised over £2500 towards our community projects. Of the remaining unsold items some have been donated to The Plough charity shop, some to The Rotary Charity in Barnstaple and a large quantity of men’s and children’s clothes to the Calais Refugees.

Little Torrington WI Celebrates

O

n 16th September 2015 over 70 ladies sat down to a celebratory tea in Victory Hall. Exactly 100 years had passed since the founding of the Women’s Institute in this country and Little Torrington WI had decided to celebrate in style by inviting all the ladies of Little Torrington and Taddiport to join them. Also invited were past members of our WI and representatives from the Devon Federations of WIs. The hall looked splendid, decked out with bunting, the tables laid with embroidered tablecloths and floral china. There was a celebration cake, of course, made to the recipe used at the National AGM in June. At that event, Her Majesty the Queen cut the cake; at our event Mrs Elliott, a past President and one time resident of Huntshaw , was kind enough to do the honours!. And of course we sang Jerusalem. The food was, as expected, excellent and the table groaned with delicacies. William Collins provided some incidental music on his saxophone, and judging by the noise levels everyone enjoyed themselves. There was an exhibition of members’ craft work, and all the scrap books were on display, leading to some considerable nostalgia. Bringing us up to the present, photographs were taken and loaded onto Devon Federation’s Facebook page . Some of these photos were picked up (the wonders of modern technology) by the National Federation, and can still be seen on their website. Little Torrington truly hitting the high spots! All the members of Little Torrington WI worked immensely hard: delivering invitations around the parish (although Trevor may have played some part), writing to past members, sourcing china, teapots, tablecloths; cooking and setting out the hall, serving endless cups of tea and of course, clearing away and washing up. We are very grateful to the Smytham Manor and Pegham Barton households for help with the tables. All in all, an event to be remembered. Sally Ramsden

My hair curled round my shoulders like the gentle touch of a hand, pushed there by a trickle of a warm ocean current and I was softly shoved towards the decaying deck; slipping through a gap in the planking I saw the jagged splinters round the edge. No amount of eye squinting and straining could look past it; although it seemed to retreat when I approached, it only thickened like compressed air. Then I saw it, blacker than the blackness curling around it. It was the evidence that the ship existed. I floundered towards it. The inky darkness twisting, looping, round my fingers, arms, body and legs. It threaded between my toes like dark tendrils of black mist. It felt heavy in my

Common News - Commons Calendar 2016

B

y the time this edition is published, the 2016 Commons Calendars will be available this year in plenty of time for Christmas. Following the success of our first calendar last year, we have ordered extra stocks this time. If you have friends, relatives or know any Torringtonians afar, then this will make a great gift. You can get your copies from the Tourist Information Office at Castle Hill, at Jack & Molly’s on the High Street, and watch out for us at the Plough Craft Fair and the Christmas Fair in the Pannier Market. If you have any difficulty getting hold of copies, then write to clerk. conservators@gmail.com and include ‘calendars’ in the subject line so that we can get back to you.

Hello again anglers!

Our article last month attracted a fair response from would-be anglers on the Torridge. Sadly, we have not had many fishable days at the back end of this season due to the flooding, so perhaps it’s time to take stock and prepare for next season, clean up the tackle and do a few repairs where needed. If you visit any other fisheries though, please be sure to wash and disinfect your nets, waders and boots. A number of invasive and parasitic species are spreading our way. In particular, Killer Shrimps and the American Signal Crayfish which have both invaded many other waters and have decimated indigenous species. We must protect our River Torridge from this very real danger! Our Fishery Warden is hoping to bring you news next month of an interesting out-ofseason event which you can all enjoy.

Great Torrington Memory Café The Plough Youth Theatre - Autumn Term 2015

he move to the meeting room at the Methodist Church has worked out well, giving us plenty of space and a kitchen area to prepare drinks and confection. The Memory Café is now open just once a month – the second Thursday of the month. We were able to offer additional openings during the summer due to funding from Devon Community Fund. We enjoyed a quiz at the September meeting which covered topics from the 60s and 70s, as well as a music quiz.
