From Your Mayor

M

y term of office as Mayor of Great Torrington ends on the 16th May, at the Annual Meeting of the Town Council.

I have many special memories of all the events you have invited me to; wonderful celebrations with all members of our community, young and not so young, but full of life. Thank you for the opportunity to be involved with them.

As a community you have supported me through all the high and low points, and I wish to thank you for that.

Just recently we came together for the Great Torrington Big Bake at Dartington Crystal, celebrating 50 years of their involvement with our town. Dartington sponsored the day for me, raising funds for my charities, May Fair and Torrington in Bloom, and they also donated the prizes.

The cakes were amazing, as were the demonstrations by Will Stacey and Ben from the Pierhouse at Westward Ho!, making lemon and pecan tarts, with tasters for the audience.

Kats Cakes did an interactive hour with the little ones, icing cakes which they took home,thank you Katrina.

A big thank you also to Anne Bacon, and Sue from Holsworthy, who did a great job of judging the cakes; I did get to taste them, the entries were outstanding.

May 4th is the day we get to choose a new councillor to represent us at Devon County Council, for Great Torrington Rural area. It’s crucial that we get the right person for the job. Ask questions about the support we need to retain our hospital services at North Devon District Hospital; do they support the STP sustainability plans to take them away, and can they explain what that will mean for patients across Devon, with travel distances and time issues to get to Exeter or Plymouth, dangerous for the survival of patients. Other areas of major importance that need addressing are infrastructure and jobs.

SOHS – Put Health at the Top of the Agenda

M

any thanks to all who put SOHS posters in their windows. These posters play a vital part in keeping people informed about the campaign. Also thank you to those who attended the public meeting and joined in the 1st April ‘red line’ around our hospital.

There is still the threat to cut maternity, children’s, neonatal and acute stroke at NDDH. They have said when it comes to cuts, ‘there are no red lines’. We have to remind those that make decisions on our behalf, that we will not accept any cuts to health services in our town, or across the rest of Devon, any of which will impact the A & E service, and will mean travelling miles for treatment. The local elections are an opportunity to put health at the top of the political agenda,supporting the local candidate you feel will best fight for our health services in Devon.

Bouncing Bees pre-school singing sessions

Bouncing bees, our singing sessions for pre-schoolers, is in full voice from 1.30-2.15pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time. These are drop in sessions, we have plenty of room for pushchairs and prams. Led by staff from the Torrington Children’s centre, we all look forward to welcoming youngsters and their grown-ups.

STITCH Update

I

t was good to see so many people making a sea of red around Torrington Community Hospital on April 1st - “we are no fools day”. Many thanks to all who turned out and also those who continued their show of support by joining the Barnstaple procession to the NDDH. There were a total of 14 such events across Devon with hundreds of people clearly showing the strength of public feeling and commitment to safeguarding our vital NHS healthcare services. It put out a very strong message to the Trust and CCG that the wishes of our communities cannot be ignored. We will NOT accept any cuts to our services at NDDH. The Torrington case is still under review with the Secretary of State for Health.

We do hope that the delay in response is a positive indication that the portfolio of information we presented in support of our case, is now receiving the full consideration that it deserves.

The Devon population is a very determined force when injustice and unfair practices come to light, so never underestimate the power and value of your voice in influencing change. Our families, our friends and ourselves could all suffer if essential lifesaving services are removed from NDDH - so we need to keep up the pressure on the powers that be, in any way that we can. The SOHS campaign is gathering strength every day - check out their website www.sohs.org.uk for up-todate information and how you can get involved to support the campaign.

Great Torrington May Fair Rehearsal & Crowning of Torrington Carnival Queen The Square Wednesday 3rd May

E

vents will start at 6pm with Great Torrington Bluecoat Primary School rehearsing maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. This will be followed by a performance from STREETZ Dance Crew and then the crowning of Torrington’s Carnival Queen. Rowlands Fair will also be in attendance at Barley Grove Car Park.

Great Torrington May Fair The Square Thursday 4th May

E

vents start around 9am with a morning service and continue throughout the day. There will be floral dancing and country dancing during the morning, the crowning of the May Queen around 12 noon, and the Cavaliers entertaining during the afternoon, plus much more entertainment for all throughout the day.

Rowlands Fair will also be in attendance at Barley Grove Car Park.

Wheelchair users/disabled persons

Any wheelchair user/disabled person who wishes to come and see the May Fair celebrations is advised to be in the Town Square no later than 10.15am.

We do try to keep seats for disabled persons outside the Green Lantern, which are allocated on a first-come-firstserved basis.

Due to Health & Safety Regulations it is very difficult to get wheelchair users/disabled persons into the Town Square after 10.15am.

Following the celebrations on May Fair day, help is required to put away the chairs that have been used. Anyone who is willing to help should meet in the Town Square at about 4.30/5pm. Any assistance we receive is greatly appreciated.

orrington AAC running club wishes all those entering this year’s Round the Tree Race the best of luck. As you can see from the accompanying photo, which is from the event in 1952, the Round the Tree race is an important part in the town’s history. Now it’s your turn to make your own history and help keep this longstanding tradition alive.

The three mile race takes in some of the spectacular sights of Torrington. Don’t be fooled, it’s certainly a challenge, but with the finish line outside a pub, it’ll be worth the drink at the end. As with last year, all finishers will receive a t-shirt to show off their achievement.

As always, the race will take place on the Friday 5th May between May Fair and Carnival Night. Entries are welcome on the day. Further details can be found at out Round the Tree Race 2017 Facebook page, including entry details.

Bluecoat Football Club at Primary Football Tournament

O

n 23rd March, eight girls from the Bluecoat Girls’ Football club played at a Primary School football tournament held at GTS. At the tournament there were eight teams, four of which were from this school. Being the only full girls’ team there, Bluecoat Girls had to be tough, but they managed to pull it off scoring a record amount of six points! The results were, the boys’ A team in 2nd place overall (losing out on penalties), the boys’ B team in 3rd place and the girls’ team and boys’ C team coming in 4th and 5th in their groups.

Overall it was a great time and everyone was proud of their performance.

Finally, all the players who took part would like to say a big thank you to Mr Tennant, Mr Bond and Phoebe Baker for making our trip possible.

South West 60- to 74-year-olds urged to get screened for bowel cancer

T

he NHS is urging 60- to 74-year olds in the South West to get screened for bowel cancer with a home testing kit.

A bowel screening kit is automatically sent to all 60- to 74-year-olds every two years to pick up early signs of cancer that may otherwise go undetected.

Early diagnosis is the life-saving key to bowel cancer treatment. However, last year less than two thirds of the eligible population in the South West took up the offer and returned a sample.

Most people will be told within two weeks that no signs were detected.

For others, however, the test may find

blood in the sample and they will be invited to a local screening centre to talk about the results and be offered more tests to find out the cause.

This does not mean they definitely have cancer - the bleeding could be caused by a non-cancerous growth or another health problem.

Screening is offered to individuals who show no signs of cancer – they do not need to have symptoms of bowel cancer, screening detects abnormalities that are potentially without symptoms at the time.

However, should anyone notice any of the following, then it is strongly advised

that they don’t wait for an invite to be screened, but go to see a GP and have a check-up: Blood in your poo/stool; sudden, unexplained weight loss; loss of appetite; or a change in your bowel movements (loose, more frequent or painful when on the toilet).

There are other things people can do to reduce their risk of cancer, such as eating healthily, taking regular exercise, giving up smoking and generally monitoring health and wellbeing, spotting when something is different and being aware of the possible signs and symptoms of cancer.

Mother & Baby Fitness Classes

aren has been in the fitness industry for over 25 years; teaching different types of fitness, from Step Aerobics, Sculpt, Freestyle, HIIT to Vibe Cycle.

Karen has also been teaching Zumba for over seven years and runs a regular class at Weare Giffard Village Hall on Wednesdays at 6pm.

When Karen had her baby boy last year she recognised it was difficult for mothers to participate in fitness whilst having young children. Childcare was also an additional cost and hassle. This prompted Karen to set up a new Mother and Baby Fitness Class, tailoring the exercises to meet mothers’ abilities and needs whilst eradicating the need for childcare. The class is suitable for children up to approximately 20 months. Local Maid Set to Open Slimming World Group

Friends of Torrington Library

O

ur first AGM was held on Tuesday 11th April in the council meeting room, above the library. Pauline Anderson represented Libraries Unlimited at the meeting. In summary, the meeting was extremely positive. After just 12 months the Friends group has a positive cash flow.

The officers elected for the next 12 months are:Chairperson - Christine Porter Secretary - John Spilstead Treasurer - Christine Bury The library offers activities for young children including craft and music.

You can borrow audio and large print books and also download a wide range of magazines for free.

Library drop box

The Torrington and district branch of the Men’s Shed has made the drop box for us. It is now installed in the foyer of the library, adjacent to the entrance to the library. This will enable users of the library to deposit books, CD’s and DVD’s when the library is closed.

Second hand book sale

The Friends group held a secondhand book sale on Easter Saturday 15th April from 10am until 1pm. Easter eggs were available for the children.

A big thank you to everyone that donated books for our book sale. The response has been tremendous!!

The sale was really successful and raised the fantastic sum of £419.04 for library projects.

Once again, thank you all for your support.

Great Torrington Remembers Private Lawrence Ashton. 1879 -1916

L

awrence Ashton was born in Langtree in 1879 and went to school in Merton. In later life his family owned the Ashton’s Old Inn, where the Old Inn Mews now stands in Well Street and the family were extremely well known in Torrington. At the start of the war he enlisted with the 1st Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. He would have seen a lot of action on the front line, including the heroic defence of Hill 60, which he came through without a scratch. He was killed in action at the Battle of Guillemont, which was part of the “great push”.

He was operating as a stretcher bearer at the time.

Because of the high profile of the family business, as well as his own employment, it is easy to imagine that he would have been a well-known local face.

The North Devon Journal wrote: “He was, therefore, widely known, and he was greatly respected, his death being deeply lamented by a large circle of friends.”

The Private’s grave is unmarked, but he is remembered on the Thiepval memorial, as well as the Great Torrington war memorial.

Round the Square Festival Free Children’s/Young Persons’ Activities

reat Torrington is holding a new festival over three days in June, based around its fabulous town square, to help raise money to reopen its historic town hall to the public.

The festival’s focus reflects the diverse and wonderful community the town has, by putting on a wide range of events from classical to rock; art from formal to abstract and performances from modern to traditional. We have talks and presentations, street theatre, dance, children’s activities and a myriad of other festival goodies across several town streets and venues!

Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June The ‘Round the Square’ festival has put activities for children and young people as its focus, and it has a wide ranging selection of professional artists bringing things for them to see, engage in and perform with! Torrington Rotary has kindly sponsored part of the children’s events programme, and we

Saturday sees the internationally renowned Storybox Theatre bring their traditional and famous Punch and Judy show to the Town Hall under croft for two shows: one of the top highlights of any family festival fun day!

Raventales brings the delights of storytelling to the undercroft for three shows. Tales of myths, haunted lands, voyages of wonder; horror, humour and the weird; something to intoxicate and beguile, be transported to another land.

On Saturday 12.30pm sees a different type of workshop/interactive dance session for young people (7+ and adults if they wish!) with a chance to learn some basic ‘morris dance’ movements with the ‘AngleTwitch’ Morris team.

Great Torrington Detachment Shooting Team Aim for National Shooting Success News of the World Competition

W

e are very pleased to announce that our Detachment Shooting Team has finished 2nd nationally in The News of the World Shooting Competition. In addition, the team have qualified for the first time in our history to shoot at Bisley (the home of shooting) in the final stage, representing the Army Cadet Force in a competition where we will be shooting against the best teams from the Air Training Corp and Sea Cadets Corps.

This is an outstanding achievement and all of the Cadets involved should be proud of their achievement.

The cadets who shoot in the competition are listed below: Staff Serjeant Freddie Webber, Cpl Trinity Hickford, Cpl Daniel Lobb, Cpl Jimmy Birch, L/Cpl Eve Bridger, Cdt Jai Head.

In addition, a huge congratulations to Cdt Jai Head who has achieved the standard of 1st Class on the .22 Rifle and to Cdt Holly Rice-Smith who has achieved a pass on the Air Rifle.

Cadet 100 Results

The final results for Cadet 100 shooting competition are as follows: S/SJT F Webber 96th positon + Cadet 100 badge as he came in the top 100 shots in the country. L/Cpl Bridger 135th, Cpl Hickford 154th, Cdt Head 172nd.

Well done to all of the above, and also to the rest of the team that took part, Cpl Birch and Cpl Lobb.

A special thanks to Captain Cook, SMI Goaman and SSI Comer for all their efforts in training the cadets to achieve these fantastic accolades.

ABF Collection

Last weekend Cadets from Great Torrington Detachment were out in strength to collect money for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF), which is one of the Detachment’s charities along with the Royal British Legion- Great Torrington Branch.

In total the Cadets managed to raise £310.16, which is a fantastic effort.

We would like to thank you on behalf of the ABF and the Detachment for your kind donations. Cadet in the Community is one of many different opportunities that the Army Cadets can offer you, along with many other exciting opportunities including: adventure training, sport, military skills and shooting to name a few.

Great Torrington Army Cadet Force meets every Friday evening 7-9:30pm at the Detachment Hut, which is located on the grounds of Great Torrington School.

There is a new category for Young Gardener of the Year, which is open for anyone under the age of 18 years.

The closing date for entries is 30th June 2017, and completed forms can be left at Duffy’s Home Hardware or Whiskers Pet Centre. An important date for your diary: on Saturday 27th May from 2-4pm, Torrington in Bloom is joining forces with the Torrington Silver Band and holding an open afternoon, with music for all tastes, in the Secret Memorial Garden. There will be a plant stall, and refreshments will be available from the 1646 café.

The Secret Memorial Garden is currently under-going considerable renovation by a small, dedicated group of people, and we hope to re-establish it as a garden of quiet meditation. It is a serene site, tucked away behind the library/Castle House buildings, full of interesting plants, herbs and trees.

Should I worry about my dog catching kennel cough?

So what is kennel cough?

K

ennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease which circulates in the dog population. Kennel cough is so named because the infection can spread very quickly amongst dogs in the close quarters of a kennel or animal shelter. It is caused by both bacteria and viruses, which cause inflammation of the trachea and bronchi.

How can my dog catch kennel cough?

Despite the name, less than half of outbreaks arise in kennels. Your pet can encounter the disease in more common circumstances such as, the park, the street, at dog shows, in training classes or anywhere where your dog may meet another dog! It is spread through airborne droplets produced by sneezing and coughing. These agents also spread through contact with contaminated surfaces.

What are the signs?

• a strong coarse, dry, hacking cough, often with a ‘honking’ sound - this is the most obvious symptom!

• runny nose • sneezing • lethargy • loss of appetite.

• low fever

How is it treated?

Any dog that is suspected of having kennel cough should be isolated from other dogs for 14 days, however they are usually only contagious for the first 7-10 days of illness.

A course of antibiotics can reduce the duration of the disease but symptoms will often still show.

Most dogs recover from canine kennel cough within 3-4 weeks. If a dog has a compromised immune system or is extremely young or old, it may take up to 6 weeks for a complete recovery. However, your pet may still be a carrier of the disease several weeks after he has recovered.

Should I vaccinate my dog against it?

If you are thinking of putting your dog into a kennel, most will insist on a kennel cough vaccination prior to admitting a dog for boarding. This is an additional vaccination to the annual booster injection and needs to be administered by your vet at least 7-10 days prior to going into kennel. Unlike the annual booster, which is given by injection, the kennel cough vaccination is squirted up the dog’s nose!

Since the chances of exposure and subsequent infection rise as the dog comes in close proximity with other dogs, the decision to vaccinate or not, varies with each individual circumstance. Generally, if your dog is not boarded or going to field trials or dog shows, you may not have a high level of need for vaccinating. On the other hand, if you plan to board your dog, or protect it from exposure, remember to vaccinate ideally a few weeks prior to potential exposure, to allow full protective immunity to build up.

Rolle Canal Summer Walks Start Again in May

his summer’s programme of guided walks associated with the Rolle Canal starts on Sunday May 14th featuring the site of the Inclined Plane at Ridd, near Annery Kiln, Weare Giffard. Torrington Memory Cafe

T

he Easter craft session went well, with Maggi showing us how to make paper flowers to decorate tables, hats etc. At the second meeting in April we had live music to listen to and sing-a-long was provided by David Clinch.

At the first meeting in May we have live music, and at the second we will be having a quiz. The June meeting sees the return of Swanswood, a very popular group who give up their time to entertain us.

The memory cafe is run by people (including volunteers) who have experience and training in dementia, so you will receive a warm welcome. A community nurse attends as well as a representative from the CAB (fortnightly) too, if you want to have a chat or get some help or advice The benefits of going to a memory cafe are that you can both socialise and chat with other like-minded people, which helps deal with loneliness and isolation due to having, or caring for someone, with dementia/memory loss.

The Torrington memory cafe provides stimulating activities for carers and people with dementia/memory loss.

It is held at the Methodist Church meeting room from 10.30am till 12.30pm on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

e are anticipating an exciting development later this month; our new loco ‘Torrington Cavalier’ should be arriving on site by the end of April. It is the last diesel electric locomotive produced by the Ruston Engine Company and will complement our existing diesel shunter ‘Progress’. We have the champagne on ice ready and waiting!

One of our members has generously donated brass name plates for the new acquisition.

We have now received the first edition of our newsletter Progress from the printers, and it is available in the carriage and other outlets in and around Torrington. We are also working on a short marketing video explaining the history of the site and, importantly, our plans for the future. If anyone has any photos, information or ideas that could be used, it would be very welcome. We will credit all contributors. Please see the team in the carriage or send an email to info@ tarkavalleyrailway.co.uk.

Our working days have been helped by continued good weather; the coal dock garden has benefitted from more planting and tree clearance and the tank wagon has had new treated woodwork and supporting ironwork.

Our aim is to have it sign written with ‘Bideford Gas & Coke Co’ but more painting is needed before we reach that stage.

We recently received a donation of quality glassware and paperweights, which are now priced up and on display in the carriage, along with our new season stock and a special offer until the end of May; £2 for any railway book. Come along and see what we have to offer.

ur ‘Being the Change & Tomorrow’ event in collaboration with the Plough was a great success. People loved it and were inspired to like/join our Facebook Page ‘Organic & Wholefood Buying Group’ to see Vox Pops of reactions to the film (under videos). We served 34 main meals and 10 soups; the Gallery buzzed with stall holders and many new alliances and contacts were made. I received lots of enthusiastic emails thanking us for all our hard work and expressing interest in further events. Buying Group leaflets, Infinity and Essentially Yours catalogues flew off the stand. We offered water tastings (tap water v Berkefeld Gravity Filter water) with participants amazed at the difference. Our snacks and treats were in demand, especially Julie’s cheesecakes (vegan, sugar free, organic of course) which were declared to be utterly divine and irresistible by one and all!

Wellbeing Taster Tip: We all love desserts, treats and sweets so I’m often asked about the pros and cons of the alternatives to refined sugar. Refined sugar is more addictive than heroin, but the rewards of getting it out of our system are huge.

People doing so nearly always experience higher spirits, improvements in memory and speech, emotional stability, restful sleep and dreams, fewer dental problems and colds, better stamina and concentration. Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimers (otherwise known as type 3 diabetes) are now at epidemic proportions, refined sugar being a major causative factor of both these conditions.

So called ‘natural’ sugars to avoid: fructose, processed agave, inorganic molasses, honey, xylitol sorbitol evaporated cane juice.

Natural sweeteners for moderate use: (all available through the OWBG) Organic coconut palm sugar: from sap of coconut palm flower buds, comes as crystals or syrup after minimal heating. Rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids, short chain fatty acids, polyphenols, antioxidants, inulin – a prebiotic that feeds good bacteria. Looks like fine brown sugar, has a wonderful caramel like flavour. A little goes a long way.

Is the Bowling Club really as old as the date on its Clubhouse?

A

sign on Torrington bowling club’s pavilion says the club was founded in 1645. According to the club’s archive, evidence for this comes from mention in a paper written at the time of the Civil War that the ‘Prince’s Guards were in the Castle Green’ before the battle of Torrington. Also that John Howe, chaplain to the Parliamentary army and perpetual curate at Torrington, referred to a game of bowls in a sermon in 1654, implying that his parishioners would be familiar with the game.

Elsewhere in the bowling club archive, it says that in 1717 ‘Castle Green was laid out for recreation – the summer house was built for £3-7s-4d in the Castle Green’. In 1741 a certain John Squire was paid five shillings for laying turf on the bowling green and the Town Wardens’ Accounts show two payments for ‘Repairing the Bowl House’ in the 1750s.

Bowls must have been played at one time on the part of the commons just beyond the cemetery, which is still called ‘the Old Bowling Green’, but no-one seems to know when it transferred to the Castle Hill site.

In 1888 the bowling club was invited to send a team to Plymouth for the tercentenary celebrations of the Armada, as Torrington was considered the most active bowling club in Devon. Their opponents were a team from Leeds and the match was played on Plymouth Hoe, with the players dressed in Elizabethan costumes.

1890 saw the first match with Barnstaple at Torrington, which Torrington won by 66 points and on 8th

June 1892 there was the first recorded match against Bideford.

In 1892 the archive states, ‘The Greenkeeper was instructed to roll the green three times and cut it twice a week. He was paid £11 for 22 weeks’ work during the season. There were 10 Honorary and 75 Members. The Annual Subscription was five shillings. (This was equivalent to a week’s wage)’.

In 1903 the English Bowling Association was formed. Dr W. G. Grace, of cricketing fame, was instrumental in setting it up. In 1908 the Devon County Bowling Association (DCBA) was founded and in 1911 a North Devon Division of the DCBA was proposed. In this year the Torrington green was re-laid.

In 1912 Torrington bowling club won the Devon County Trophy. In 1972 the North Devon Triples League was formed.

We sing all genres of music and perform in the region of 12/15 concerts a year, both home and abroad, and all for charitable purposes.

You do not have to have the ability to read music, and approx. 80% of our members do not. We have an active ladies support group for wives/partners and enjoy many social events.

Armada Bowls Match at the Armada 400 celebrations was played on Plymouth Hoe, once again between Torrington and a team from Leeds. In 1888 the Original Oak Bowling Team from Leeds had beaten Torrington by two shots, but this time (again dressed in 16th century costume) the Devon team had its revenge beating the northerners 99-63.

In 1987 the old bowling pavilion – a wooden building painted green with a tin roof – was demolished. Excavations were made to see if any remains of the old castle could be found. The masonry foundations of part of a domestic building were discovered, the tail of a rampart of clay and stone was located and considerable quantities of medieval pottery were recovered. The smart new clubhouse, brick built with a tiled roof, was opened in 1988.

This exciting event takes place at The Ultimate Adventure Centre near Bideford.

Teams of four will take on its infamous Ultimate Assault Course whilst trying to secure the title of ‘Fastest Team’. There will also be prizes for the Fastest Male and Female participants.

Be prepared to jump, splash, climb and dash your way around the course, tackling giant inflatable balls, cargo nets and slides. It’s set to be a great fun event, with an afternoon BBQ and entertainment.

There will also be prizes for the Best Fundraising Team with all sponsorship helping to raise funds for the charity’s Little Bridge House hospice in Fremington which provides care and support for local life-limited children and their families.

Stellaria holostea

T

his is a delightful little wild flower that can be found in various parts of Torrington Common during spring and early summer. We know it by its common name of Greater Stitchwort, the ‘stitchwort’ part of the name refers to its ancient medicinal qualities for allegedly curing a stitch in the side or other, similar sharp pains.

Stitchwort can be found throughout the country growing in hedgerows, grassy waysides and woodland edges, sometimes appearing in swathes of soft white, or alongside red campion and bluebells. The leaves are quite grass-like with rough margins, in opposite pairs, and the flowers are white, star-like, up to 2.5cm (1 inch) across, with 10 yellow stamens in loose clusters. It is a perennial, reaching a height of 20-60cm.

Believe it or not, it is a member of the carnation and campion family and there is also a Lesser Stitchwort (S. graminea) which is again widespread, with grasslike foliage but with smooth-edged stems. This native prefers more acidic soils and can be confused with its larger relative, the main difference being either rough or smooth stems.

There are some strange superstitions associated with this plant; one being that if picked it might induce thunder, or being bitten by an adder (which might have some truth in it, since adders can be found sunbathing in hedgebanks, etc).

The other superstition is that the picker may be led astray by elves or fairies!

Another Year and a Real Challenge

pril has been busy in the rescue. The great news is that both Milo and Prince have gone off to their new homes and seem to be settling in well.

Sadly the homes that we had lined up for both Jaime and Diesel have fallen through, and so they are still waiting, as is our lovely Bera who has been with us since July last year.

Sadly one of my best friends had to come back into rescue last month as her mum has sadly died. Darcy is a lovely German Shepherd Dog who was adopted early in 2016 and was the apple of her mum’s eye. Aunty Lynne says she was a great supporter of K9focus and will be greatly missed. In memory of June Coleman, we will be adding an extra round to our dog show at the Braunton May Fair on 29th May The June Coleman Trophy, just for German Shepherd Dogs; so please come along.

Events this month: Paws at the Beach, Saunton Sunday 14th May; Bideford Bike Show Saturday 27th May; Braunton May Fair – Monday 29th May. We also have several collection days between 17th May and 17th June, and are in desperate need of volunteer collectors. If you can help, even for just an hour or so, please give Aunty Lynne a call on 07971 461 806 – do leave a message as the mobile signal at HQ can be very poor.

Our Charity Shop £1 day was a little disappointing, there are lots of bargains and heaps of dog treats and toys, so do come along. he Easter coffee morning last month raised over £200 for the residents’ comforts fund. This enables the residents to go on outings throughout the year with Abbeyfield volunteers. We have monthly outings planned for the next few months and are hoping for good weather!

Our Summer Garden Party is on June 10th at Glen Tor, Villa Road. There will be more details next month.

We welcomed another new resident at the end of March, but there is room for another! Do you know anyone who might like to find out more about living here, with our friendly and active residents? Family Fun at Brunch

D

id you know that although Grosvenor Church Torrington has existed for 18 months, we have been running a community family breakfast for almost five years? ’Brunch’ is run by a small team from the church, and takes place on the first Sunday of each month at 10.30am in Great Torrington Bluecoats school hall. Each month families come along to enjoy a continental breakfast, a proper coffee, and a fun-filled morning of activities for the whole family to enjoy together, all for free.

At the heart of this idea is a passion for families; we want to provide a place where families can spend quality time together having fun, doing activities that involve working together, talking and hopefully enjoying themselves!

Also at the heart of Brunch is introducing families to Jesus. Each month the activities are themed in some way around a Bible story that we tell the children, but that is equally as important to parents and grandparents alike. Over the years we’ve had pancake races, made butterfly and chick costumes, grown plants, made vehicles and rockets, had sports day, mini Olympics, iced biscuits, made decorations, made jewellery, made new year’s resolutions and had lots and lots of inter-family competitions! All these are woven in somehow to link to the story at the end!

As we get to know families we also get to hear about their lives, and from time to time how we may be able to help in some way. One family recently had a baby, and we were able to cook meals for the family for a couple of weeks while they found their feet and adjusted to their new addition. Of course it was a privilege to be invited in and enjoy baby cuddles too!

Each month we love to see familiar faces, new faces and families of all descriptions. We have grandparents bringing grandchildren to give mum a break, dads bringing their children, and sometimes even teenagers on their own. There is no expectation to come along to church, although there is always an open invitation. Some families have found that once they got to know a few people who go to Grosvenor church through Brunch, they felt more confident to give church a try.

Due to May Fair the next Brunch will be on Sunday May 14th, 10.30am - all welcome!

We had an Easter chocolate tombola, a cake sale, many Easter games and refreshments, which were all very popular, but none of them came close to rivalling the BBQ which proved to be a big hit once again!

The reason I think that this is an important message and things must change is that we are decreasing our kids’ value of life. Yes, you read that correctly, promoting golf as a sport decreases your kid’s value of life. We are telling them that these sports are healthy and you must do them throughout your life to stay fit and healthy. We as a world.

We as an earth. Are promoting obesity.

Teenagers are advised to do 60 minutes of physical activity per day. As a member of this age group, I have been brought up being told that sport is a way of life. But

also, that golf, darts and snooker are all sports. Around 50% of teenagers in the UK and America are obese. When asked if they played sports 25% said yes.

50% of that 25% said they played golf.

Personally I think that golf is as boring as watching paint dry. Yet lazy teens are drawn to this ‘non effort’ sport. Can you see what you have done?

I don’t want to make you feel bad, but what have you done is unacceptable.

Promoting these “sports” as a good way to live life. It’s a lie. How many innocent young minds have you infected? Too many. Allowing children to settle for these past times instead of kitting

M

an-made mechanical thunder echoed across the country and sea; a non-stop orchestra of pain and loss. Ash danced to the symphony of gun-fire as it returned, floating to the sodden ground, doomed to collide with the ashen faces below.

When the dance seemed to be coming to an end, fatal shards of metal descended from the heavens, sending a deadly concoction of dirt, metal and debris high into the air, giving new life to the endless dance.

Sprawled out on the thin shelves of the scornful trench were despondent bodies curled into themselves, sinking torpidly into the saturated ground, covered by a blanket of frost to keep warm. But overnight their warmth was snatched away from them. The weather was as twisted and vile as any beast could ever hope to be. It seeps deep into

the body and diminished any heat found within, leaving the victim defenceless and hollow. The cold would take their eyes as ransom and leave nothing in its wake. Veins as blue as their lips stood out like lightning cracking and fracturing through the sky. Their skin was left sickeningly pale and as bleak as the war that they were fighting. The blizzard had left their vessels empty and ossified, like forgotten marionettes.

The few that had survived the nightly onslaught were left frigid while their teeth clacked together to a beat without a melody. Every rasping breath was accompanied by a burning lungful of soot and smoke, exchanged with a wheezing cloud of humid steam. For a fleeting moment, their suffering would turn to a temporary bliss, curling around their face, tickling their moustache and nose. Only to be sadistically seized by

them out for a full and productive life.

However, as always in life, there is a way of turning this around. Don’t let obesity devour us as a species. Help the children of today to fall in love with true sports.

You can solve this global problem. So, tiddlywinks, chess and Monopoly are not sports, but neither is golf, croquet, bowling, snooker, shooting, cup stacking or even muggle quidditch. Bring the fun back into sports. Educate young minds.

The overwhelming musk of sweat, urine, gunpowder and blood followed them everywhere; almost as if it was stalking them, interweaved into their very being.

The trench itself was similar to its inhabitants, dismal and malodourous.

A stream of urine, rain water and human waste flowed down the claustrophobically narrow walkway.

Slumbering sobs and whimpers ricocheted against the filthy walls, acting as another reminder to the torture that these inhumane conditions had brought.

The shelves that were dug into the walls were cluttered with rocks and debris making a comfortable sleep impossible.

Challenge Yourself

A

t the time of writing, in midApril, many of you have been ‘Challenging Yourselves’ by taking part in events to raise muchneeded funds for ‘Little John’s House’ in Romania. Throughout April, and earlier in the year, we have been striking off those miles from North Devon to Romania. Some of you have run, walked or swum further than you ever have before, and we not only thank you but hope you enjoyed it. I am most grateful to all those ‘water babies’ who joined me in Torrington Pool to ‘Swim the Channel’ - we made it, swam over 33 miles and now have only 1400km, or so, to go! There are many events still to come through the remainder of April, so I will update our progress once again in the June edition.

ur Open-Air Theatre & Music programme kicks off in May, and includes 31 open-air theatre events and three music evenings at eleven picturesque North Devon venues, including Hartland Abbey, Castle Drogo, Manor Gardens Lynmouth, Castle Hill at Filleigh, Arlington Court and RHS Garden Rosemoor, to name just a few. New this year are Tapeley Park Instow, and Blackberry Farm Milton Damerel. Featuring well known touring companies such as Heartbreak, Illyria, Hotbuckle Productions, The Pantaloons, Box Tree Productions, The Festival Players, Handle Bards and everyone’s favourite, The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company. This promises to be a summer of lazy afternoons, warm evenings, picnics, fun and happy memories for all the family.

A good helping of British films includes Terence Davies’ very well reviewed A Quiet Passion about the poet Emily Dickinson; broad comedy from Joan Collins and Pauline Collins in The Time of Their Lives; cult director Ben Wheatley’s shoot ‘em up Free Fire; the Julian Barnes adaptation The Sense of an Ending starring Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling; and Another Mother’s Son based on the true story of Louisa Gould who sheltered an escaped Russian POW on Jersey during WW2. We have three ‘Live by Satellite’ screenings: National Theatre’s Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead and Obsession (starring Jude Law) and Antony & Cleopatra from the RSC.
