From Your Mayor

Yet another month has flown by and I need to get my thoughts in some semblance of order to write this article, and think about other jobs to be done.

The May Fair and Carnival Committee are meeting regularly to plan events for May Fair week. It is tradition that the Mayor is also Chair of the Committee, and I was shocked this year to learn that insurance for covering the various activities has gone from £293 to a staggering £600!!!

Over the past five years, the total cost of putting on the May Fair and Carnival has averaged £6800, but already this year early bills suggest the cost is going to be quite a lot higher. I have just taken delivery of the draw tickets which, if we sell them all, will raise £1,200 - less the cost of prizes and printing, so if you could sell any tickets for us at your place of work, or to friends and neighbours, please contact me on 01805 625662 and I will let you have some.

So what other things have been keeping me busy? Well I went to the senior school with Helen and Melissa who are both on the Carnival sub-committee, to interview the candidates for Carnival Queen and Attendants. After much deliberation, we finally chose Brogan, with Siani and Leah as attendants; I am sure they will be excellent ambassadors for GTS. I also went along recently with the Mayoress and deputy Mayor, to judge presentations by some year 7 GTS pupils at the Plough. They had to investigate alternative energy sources for Great Torrington, in teams of three, and cost out different forms of power. All the groups performed extremely well, making our

job more difficult. We finally picked two teams who were just a little ahead of the rest, and then afterwards we were treated to a buffet lunch produced by the children themselves. A big thank you to all the teachers and we look forward to the next presentation. Thinking back to my own school days, I would certainly not have had the confidence shown by these young people. There is some really good work going on at GTS, and the latest exam results are the best the school has produced. Well done to the Head and all the talented teachers.

The junior school is already starting their preparations for May Fair and on 12th February we went to help with the vote count to choose the May Queen, Attendants and Heralds. We are looking forward to working with them and their parents very shortly.

As you areprobably now well aware, after months of debating Torridge District Council have given planning permission for Waitrose to build a new supermarket.

As this decision has now been made, our local council must ensure all the conditions laid down are followed correctly.

Whilst settling down to write this, I just caught some local news and saw there is a possibility Axminster Community Hospital could get some beds reinstated, and with STITCH working so hard on our behalf, maybe we have a glimmer of hope for our own Community Hospital?

May Fair & Carnival Help Needed

t will soon be time to celebrate Great Torrington’s very special May Fair and Carnival and once again the May Fair Committee is appealing for helpers. Committee Members work very hard all year to ensure that everything runs smoothly throughout the four days of events, but we always need extra pairs of hands.

We need helpers on May Fair day (Thursday 7th May) at approximately 4pm in the Square, to help put all the chairs and benches away after the entertainment has finished.

Also, on the evening of Saturday 9th May, we need people to assist with marshalling at strategic points along the carnival route. It is very important that we have sufficient people to cover each road junction along the route.

Please don’t sit back and think “someone else will do it” – we need YOU! If you are able to help on either or both of these days, PLEASE make contact for further details.

he Men’s Shed in Torrington continues to progress. Our enthusiastic core of Shedders has built its first work bench in the workshop at The Puffing Billy, and thanks to the generosity of donors, is building up a useful stock of tools, materials and other equipment.

Dog Faeces Shame...

“Love me, love my dog”, is a saying that can be traced back to the sixteenth century when dogs were tossed bones and roamed wild. But now that they have become domesticated creatures, we sometimes wonder how far certain dog owners will go to force their dog’s more unpleasant habits upon other people who walk the Commons.

Dogs are wonderful companions and pets, but tend to leave behind faeces where they have been exercised.

Recently, on the bank above Millennium Path, at the rear of Mill Street properties, a selection of Lidl’s bags containing excrement were deposited (see photo).

Conservators (whose job it isn’t), picked them up and deposited them in the bins, designated especially for this purpose, which are on the Commons.

Many dog walkers ‘pick up’ after their pets, and we thank them for this. To leave dog mess behind is not only antisocial, but it is a health hazard.

Torrington’s Ten Beds would have made a difference!

In the latest Press Release from the NHS NEW Devon CCG, they claim to have been talking to communities about the Community Services programme, known in Torrington as ‘Care Closer to Home’. As usual ‘they have been listening and gained valuable feedback into what people want’. ‘This feedback will inform our decision as to how many community beds are required across Devon’.

It is clear that their excursion across Devon has raised the same furore as their illegal strike on the beds in Torrington.

The people of Axminster, Crediton and South Molton, will soon learn that the weasel words of comfort mean nothing.

Decisions have already been made; notwithstanding that the ban on obese patients and smokers had to be reversed after ‘we listened to the people etc.’ How much did that aborted exercise cost?

Just add it to the £12 million overdraft; the people will pick up the tab!

It is obvious that we need as many community beds as possible. NDDH is on red alert most days (no beds available), patients being moved up to four times in two days. Our most respected nurses and doctors are working harder and harder, just to stand still. What a difference the ten beds in Torrington would have made this winter!!

Community Hospital Beds Discrimination Against EX38?

he doctors and managers of the NEW Devon CCG/ Trust are playing God again, against the Hippocratic Oath where it states, “Above all, I must not play God”.

They are judging from on high, which community deserves to have hospital beds and which doesn’t. Their focus is not on what is in the best interest of patients, but rather on how to save money. The doctor turns banker!

The closing of hospital beds in Torrington and their replacement with a ‘Care Closer to Home’ scheme has proved an abject failure, because it is an unproven under-staffed, under-resourced and chronically underfunded service.

They are prematurely sent home to face a DIY healthcare provision, with minimal support, from an overstretched, ‘Care Closer to Home’ team; with just two registered nurses in Torrington covering a population of over 12,000.

The ‘Patients Charter’ (NHS plan) states as its core principle, “to keep people healthy and to reduce health inequalities”. This new system promoted by CCG boss Dr John Womersley, meets neither of these core principles. Under his watch, healthcare across Devon has become a postcode lottery. Can this inequality be legal?

The national public speaking competition aims to support and encourage young people to develop their communication skills and formulate ideas on topical subjects.

The girls’ team won the first round, with their brilliant performance of a speech entitled: “Is Drone Warfare Immoral?

Great Torrington Memory Café Does Your Event Need a Helping Hand? n March the Memory Local Business is offering their services on a voluntary basis Café will be visited by

a representative from Amano Connect, which produces technological equipment to help people with dementia live in their own homes.

In April we will be open on the second and fourth Thursday and will continue with the two café meetings until September.

On April 10th we have the duet ‘Dogleg’ making a return visit to the café to entertain us. On April 24th we will be having a reminiscence session.

The Memory Café enables people with dementia/memory loss and their families/ carers to get peer support from others who have the same difficulties.

Peer support promotes self-care, independence, wellbeing and choice.

The Café enables people to meet regularly with others. It is an informal environment which provides information about dementia/memory loss, gives practical tips about coping with dementia, provides a social network and a forum where advice can be given by health and social care professionals. It also offers emotional support and reduces social isolation.

We operate on a drop in basis between 10.30am and 12.30pm, everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a cuppa and biscuits/cake, as well as regular activities. The cafe is held at the Torrington Arms, New Street.

yndale Housekeeping has now been trading for 10 years. We are a cleaning company that deals with all types of cleaning from housebound people to executive homes, holiday home management, private schools and hotels.

Over the past five years we have taken on a variety of jobs/projects on a voluntary basis. From helping in a school garden and raising funds for their project, staffing the Red Cross Open Gardens for the Syria conflict, staffing and catering support for the Red Cross Local Open Gardens - whatever the occasion we have pitched in and helped.

Today much of the local news is about reduced (or no) funding for local projects close to many of our clients’ hearts. Dementia, disability - premises closed, activities ceased and lunches stopped. Some of these projects were the only events our clients got to go out to. We are very lucky in that we are a busy company, but we do try to go the extra mile and make sure that our clients get an unexpected visit from us, an outing to the local garden centre for a cup of tea, a visit to the library, simple things that break up the day.

It is to that end that we would like to offer a little helping hand to any local individuals, groups or charitable events that may need to “borrow” a pair of hands.

espite the bitter night, 22 members turned out to hear Ivan and Sue Godfrey recount tales of their visits to Nepal. As well as being ambassadors for the Topic of Cancer, they raise funds to equip schools in Nepal with lavatories for the girls, to ensure they continue their education into their teens. Ivan and Sue’s photos were amazing; an intrepid pair shown crossing wire thin suspension bridges and paths with sheer drops of thousands of feet. A good evening.

Our meeting on Tuesday 3rd March will concentrate on ‘proper’ gardening. David Squire from RHS Rosemoor, and ‘keeper’ of their magnificent perennial border, will be sharing his ideas and knowledge of perennials.

In the meantime, the gardening team have been out tending the bed by S&G carpets. That is to say: removing builders’ rubble, beer glasses and sundry bits of paper. We also cut back the perennials and grasses. Pruning the lavatera will wait ‘til warmer weather in March We meet at the Methodist Hall at 7.30pm. Subs for the year are £10, (no change from last year). Visitors are also be very welcome at a cost of £1.50.

Update on Transforming Community Services Consultation in the Northern Locality

spokesperson for Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NEW Devon CCG) said: “Since September 2014 we have been talking to communities and stakeholders about the future of community services in North Devon as part of the CCG’s Transforming Community Services programme, which in the Northern locality is referred to as Care Closer to Home. This has allowed us to gain valuable feedback and insight into what people want, as well as listen to their concerns and questions about our proposals.

“We have heard concerns about longer term staffing and workforce issues in both the community and hospital setting, and are working with stakeholders to address these issues. This feedback is being used to inform our decision about the number of community beds that will be needed across North Devon, and we will soon be in a position to say what that number is.”

“The next phase of this work will be establishing where those beds are best located.

Prior to making that decision we will consult (under section 14Z2 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012- Public involvement and consultation by clinical commissioning groups) with local communities and stakeholders to ensure that their views form part of the decision making process.”

“Beds are an integral part of community services, and an individual’s home, community hospitals and registered nursing homes are all options that will be considered for the location of community beds.

The relationship between primary care, community teams, social care and the voluntary sector will be critical to the success of the Care Closer to Home model.

“In addition, we will also be talking to individual communities and stakeholders, including the voluntary sector about the development of health and social care hubs which form an important part of the future of community services in the area.”

Young Carers’ Trip to see Kaiser Chiefs in Plymouth

oung Carers from the Carewise project were given a special treat, when they were taken to see the Kaiser Chiefs at Plymouth Pavilions. Some were avid fans, whilst others were excited about seeing their first live concert. We all met in Holsworthy for the journey by mini bus. Some had only heard of Ricky Wilson from the BBC show The Voice, however on hearing and recognising the songs they were soon singing. After bouncing the night away,

there were several pairs of tired legs and lots of snoring on the way home.

t was good to be back after the Christmas break with everyone greeting each other as old friends.

Joviality and the welcoming of our new member Susan over, we settled down and our various poems and stories were read out and discussed.

Mind and imaginations had evidently been active, as the reading matter embraced such a wide range of topics.

The contributions covered subjects from a person missing on a beach, to a poem reminding us that Christmas was a time for fresh hope, as well as joy and love.

World War One cards sent from France, embroidered with silk and containing sentimental messages, were passed around and interest was aroused by their beauty and inherent purpose. A novel based around these cards was a work in progress for one of our group.

The evening ended with a story relating to a visit to Bath and what might have happened to a character taking the waters there in Roman times. The last offering was a humorous poem based on the pleasures of a glass of gin and tonic!

The subject for our next meeting is ‘Cancellation’ and will be held in the Committee Room of Torrington Conservative Club on Thursday 5th March at 7.30pm. he Trustees would like to offer fully funded places on an ‘Outward Bound Skills for Life Award Course’ to young people aged between 16 and 19 during summer 2015.

The Award is designed to help participants make an effective transition into sixth form, further education or work and is a chance to have a life-shaping adventure with people from all over the world, to know what they are truly capable of achieving and to stand out in a crowded market place. Participants will take part in 19 days of high adventure and challenge, amongst some of the most spectacular scenery that the UK has to offer. Please note that the course is 19 days, running from a Monday to a Friday so only involving young people in being away over two weekends.

One matter does concern me greatly, however, and that is the amount of dog mess (and cat mess) found in the flowerbed at Windy Corner. It is absolutely revolting and whoever is allowing their pets to do this, please will you clean up after your pet has been! There is a dog mess bin by the entrance to Rack Park (less than 50 metres from Windy Corner) where you can dispose of the same. It is not remotely amusing!

March will see the launch of this year’s potato growing competition, with Year 4 of Great Torrington Bluecoat Church of England Primary School participating once again – I think there are over 60 children involved this time, that’s a lot of potatoes!

We shall also shortly be launching our Best Garden competition and hope for a good number of entrants again, newcomers are most welcome. We would love to have some vegetable gardens entered (or allotments) and also more youngsters.

How did Mothering Sunday begin?

North Devon Records Office Update

T

he latest news reported in the North Devon Journal was that the NDRO was to close. This was announced by the Chairman of the North Devon Athenaeum at their Founders Day event when a reporter was present. He actually gave a mixed message to the effect that it was to close but that no final decision had been made. At present it remains with Devon County Council to decide what is to happen. The NDRO staff are in limbo, but are beginning the task of deciding which records should go to the Heritage Centre in Sowton. What is to become of the remaining records and the Athenaeum’s records is still very unclear. Bearing in mind that one of the jewels in the Athenaeum’s crown is the Barnstaple Town Records, some of which are extremely old and are generally a large and a magnificent resource, this is

The costs of the move must be escalating to dwarf any minor funding issue relating to the NDRO remaining open, and in any event the South West Heritage Trust has indicated that they are willing to include the NDRO in their portfolio should this be required.

It is therefore perhaps premature to comment directly on something that at the moment is only the subject of rumour and speculation. It has also been pointed out that the records are available to all via the DCC website, and that movement of the physical records would probably be as much to ensure their continuing safety and condition.

Torrington Councillor Margaret Brown – Commented: It’s really important that records like these continue to be readily available to local people at a local level. In the case of public records, unless they are all made available digitally or electronically, physical access within a reasonable travelling distance needs to be thought about. Relocation to Exeter would in my mind not be appropriate. However we need to remember that no firm proposals have so far been brought forward. It would therefore be wrong to draw any conclusions from what we know for now. I would expect that if any ideas are promoted then there would be proper public consultation on the issue.’

Torrington Councillor Cathrine Simmons – Commented: ‘I am not aware that any decisions have yet been made but I do not think I would support a move of the physical records to Exeter. I understand that some tourism is generated in the area because people come to research their ancestors and it would be sad to lose this asset.’

Forgiven.

Two brother’s fight… this is so much more. This is my story of how control can turn a man’s heart into stone. It can turn a man’s mind into nothing but selfish thoughts. A tongue that has been repressed into never saying help! This is my choice I made.

I see him lying there with tears running down his face, I see him lying there as I look into his eyes; you can just see the terror inside them. He still does not utter that one word he will never say – even though he knows he needs to.

It was a horrendously terrifying night.

At least for an 8 year old. Me and my brother Phil, lay in bed… in the same bed.

I was squeezing his hand so tightly I didn’t even realise. I had always been afraid of storms but this night seemed exceptionally bad. Peeking out from under the cover, I waited for the next flash of light after which came the roar of the thunder. It sounded like the rain was going to smash through the windows at any minute. It was at this moment my reliance on my brother was too late, it become his downfall.

At this moment in time I need to explain why my brother became the man he was.

We lived in very hard times: money was scarce, love even scarcer. Our dad was a drunk and if he ever worked he blew 90% of his wage on drink. Our mum had no love to give, in fact she was always getting my older brother into trouble. Anything that went wrong, anything I did wrong, any

problems, it all got taken out on my brother.

His beatings were beyond belief. He never complained. He never cried. Years and years he tolerated this endless form of abuse. I defy anyone to not turn, to not end up with the body, the mind and the heart of a stone.

Many years of watching my brother’s torment, helpless to protect him, when war was declared in 1914 I saw our only way of escape. There was one small problem…

I was underage. But having listened to my drunken father’s rants - year in year out - my way forward and into war was by changing my date of birth. This meant I could help both of us to escape our awful home life and leave our squalid miserable existence. Although to me this seemed a perfect solution, my brother was far from convinced. But being the protector he was, there was no way he was going to allow me to go alone.

A year into war, having seen sights no imagination could ever conjure, we were preparing for our bloodiest battle yet… the smell of gun powder. The clay and mud that clung to our boots weighing us down like blocks of concrete. A deep fog clung to the air, unable to see, all you could hear were the blood curdling screams. Were they hurt, were they dying, were they friend or enemy? I tried to run forward, legs aching so badly they didn’t want to move. What?

What? Why couldn’t I move?

It took a second to realise a hand was yanking me back. Why? Why? In that split second time stood still: no sound, no smell, there was nothing. Why was I on the ground? I turned my head as the bullet penetrated skin, bone, blood. The salty taste of blood on my lips, stinging my

eyes.

As he hit the ground, I heard myself scream his name, “PHIL!” My legs wouldn’t move, why wouldn’t they move? Please somebody help me. Years of guilt, years of anguish oozing from every pore as I crawled to my brother. Cradling his head in my arms, trying to stop the blood pumping from his body, I knew that bullet had been for me; I knew it should be me lying there dying. Not my brother. Why him? Hadn’t he suffered enough? All of his suffering down to me. He looked into my eyes and he touched my face, his last breath escaping his body. At that precise moment in time I died too, my future written in that battlefield.

There stood our dad, in our doorway, as I carried my brother’s uniform in my arms. I sat on the bed, the bed I’d shared with my brother - he was the true hero.

They say life flashes before your eyes just before you die. This is what I had seen as I sat on our bed and pulled the trigger.

I

t is a very rare to have an opportunity for Bideford to host a professional orchestra.

The Chamber Philharmonic Europe Orchestra are returning, for a second time, to perform the last concert of Bideford Music Club’s current series and they will play, among other well-known pieces; Bach’s Concerto in A minor for violin and orchestra, Albinoni’s Adagio in G minor and Holst’s Suite for String orchestra No. 2 “St. Paul’s Suite.

This orchestra was founded in 2006 in Cologne, and engages over 60 of the most talented young musicians from 18 European nations. Its outstandingly high artistic level is apparent, by the many concerts and festivals at which the orchestra has played throughout the continent, as well as by the acclaim of press and critics.

Since its inception, the Chamber Philharmonic Europe has been built upon a broad range of professional experience, and in order to promote the younger generation, the orchestra aims also to provide promising artists the opportunity for further development in its various sections.

Ten orchestra members will be touring the UK in March, and they will include Bideford on their journey. The concert will be held in the High Street Methodist Church in Bideford on Wednesday, March 11th at 7.30pm. Tickets are only available at the door, £12.50 (students and children free).

War Memories with a Local Connection

0 years ago on May 5th, Bernard Medley-Smith walked back into his parents’ house in Torrington after six years at war. Bernard’s father, Rev Alfred Smith, was a missionary in India until retiring in 1940 and, with his wife Ethel, returned to the UK, to Torrington, firstly as a guest of the Baptist minister and then as a resident.

Bernard was in the British Expeditionary Force sent to France and Belgium when war broke out, but was reported missing during the retreat to Dunkirk. Two months later, he was found to be a prisoner in Poland.

Because his parents were in Devon, his story was reported in a local paper in 1941, this article still exists, as well as documents and letters from Bernard, which relate his daily activities and state of mind, plus army and parcel records. Residents of Torrington also sent him gifts, such as cigarettes, from the proprietor of The Black Horse.

Life as a prisoner was hard, with little respite, but Bernard kept motivated with games of chess, reading, and studying

pleas for warm clothing because of the extreme temperatures and hard labour.

Also surviving is his diary of what was sometimes called, “The Death March”, because of the brutality suffered under the German guards. “The March” was deemed a war crime at the Nuremburg trials, with accusations of deliberate starvation, cruelty and murder, as there was no good reason for marching 35,000 prisoners of war 500 miles from the east into Germany, in the worst winter of the 20th century with inadequate feed and clothing.

Bernard managed to escape, teamed up with a German SS Officer, and managed to cover many miles by lorry and train with him, but was recaptured and rejoined the march which finished in Brunswick, when they awoke one morning to find their German guards had been replaced by American soldiers.

Bernard returned home, to Torrington, where he settled, married, had two children and taught until his retirement. A ‘Robinson Crusoe’ from North Devon

Why not look into your family history, you never know what you will find!

A

s ‘everybody knows’ all the wills from Devon were destroyed in the Blitz in 1942. Well no, not all! Those from the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, (the highest Probate Court in the land until 1858) still exist in The National Archives. I came across this one dating from 1611, it starts “In the Name of God Amen, I Hugh Frayne being about to voyage into the East Indies on the vjth (6th) supply sent thither, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament.”

There are lots of records from the start of the East India Company (now in the British Library) and I discovered his tale. Hugh travelled on the ‘Trades Increase’, an enormous vessel built by the Crown and leased to the East India traders. Other smaller vessels made up the fleet. Hugh was an agent of a London trader and was heading to Molucca to buy pepper, but stopped off in Mocha (now Aden). Two things happened there; Hugh bought a pair of mamillias, or nipple brooches, which he mentioned in a codicil to his will. The other event was that the Captain General of the expedition was kidnapped by the local Sultan. Hugh and others then landed at night and rescued him after a fire fight.

Increase’ and other smaller vessels then sailed to the Moluccas; they had to fight off the Dutch who regarded pepper as their monopoly. The ‘Trades Increase’ was careened to scrape the barnacles off but got burnt. The other traders went home to Britain with a cargo of pepper, but Hugh stayed in Molucca. He wrote a detailed account of the trading opportunities. The British wanted to sell woollen cloth to buy pepper. This was not going to work in a tropical climate, but the prevailing winds that brought the expedition across the Indian Ocean reversed six months later and brought Chinese trading fleets to Molucca, and they were interested in woollen cloth. Hugh died in 1614 in Molucca and his will later got proved in the PCC. You may not find such an interesting ancestor, but there are many wills with local connections available from The National Archives at nationalarchives. gov.uk. Search for Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Also the Devon Wills Project (see GENUKI.com/Dev) lists all surviving Devonian wills so far found, and the Principal Probate Registry lists all wills since 1858 and that is on-line at gov.uk/ search-will-probate.

Tarka Valley Railway Group News

hose of you who have ventured on to the Tarka Trail recently, will have seen that the Tarka Valley Railway volunteers have been hard at work clearing the vegetation which had encroached over part of the Trail, on the Bideford side of the station. This is in preparation for us realigning the Trail, to allow the railway to run alongside, and the work is being done with the permission of Devon County Council prior to the new lease being signed.

Rotary Megadraw 2015 The Easy Way to Raise Funds for Your Club or Organization Do you want to raise funds for your club or organization at no cost to yourselves? Then Megadraw 2015 may be just what you need.

The Rotary Club of Torrington is offering voluntary organizations in the Torrington area the opportunity to take part in Megadraw 2015. This is a North Devon draw, with major prizes, which will be drawn next November.

By selling Megadraw tickets, you can raise funds for your own organization. All the funds raised by the sale of Meagadraw tickets are kept by your own organization, for its own purposes. The Rotary Club of Torrington simply provides the tickets and the paperwork. The Barnstaple Link Rotary Club has the tickets printed, has obtained the licence, arranged the prizes, and will organize a spectacular draw night in Barnstaple in November.

There is no catch. EVERY £1 YOU TAKE YOU KEEP, for the benefit of your organization. All that is asked is that you register the receipt of tickets provided, return the counterfoils of sold tickets and return unsold tickets.

Fleur’s Gardening Forum Tips for Sowing Seeds

I

’m starting these articles with a blank canvas, since March will be the first month of my new question and answer sessions. So, I will write something that is relevant to the time of year and hope some of your queries will be answered within.

Here are a few tips: Make sure you use good quality seed compost and that it is ‘fresh’.

Compost that you have had lying around since last autumn may not be as viable, although it will do to pot on plants or use as a mulch.

I always moisten my compost before I sow and if the compost is very cold, I use warm tap water. I leave it for a while to soak in before mixing well and breaking down any lumps. You can add sharp sand or vermiculite to aid drainage at this juncture, if required.

Large seeds such as beans or cucumbers are better sown in individual pots (3” /9cm are usually best). Fill the pot with compost, tap down sharply to knock out any large air pockets and poke in the seed to about your first knuckle joint! Do not lay the seeds flat on the compost because they may rot, as moisture can settle on top of the seed rather than drain past.

Smaller seeds should be sown in trays; again, fill the tray with compost and tap down sharply. Make sure that the compost is levelled otherwise when you need to water, the moisture will drain down to the shallow end and may wash the seeds with it! Sow the seeds carefully and thinly (to avoid too many plants and also to preserve a few seeds to allow successional sowing). Most seeds require a light covering of compost over the top and firm down gently, just to press the seeds into the compost.

The pots or trays of seeds can then be placed in a warm, bright environment, covered if necessary. Then wait until you see signs of growth before you start watering (unless the compost is very dry). Once the seedlings are growing strongly you can uncover them. Do not over-water, especially if the weather is cold, and cover the seedlings at night. Always use tap water, as this is purer and should not contain fungal spores.

You will soon see the true leaves starting to appear and once this occurs, you can prick out. This is a term used when you gently tease out each little seedling and plant it in an individual pot, or spaced out in trays/modules. Again, follow the same guidelines above.

Handle each seedling by its seed leaves; make a hole into which you gently guide the roots and some of the stem. Tap the compost over the roots and firm lightly, adding extra compost if necessary (tomato seedlings like being planted quite deeply.) Water regularly and watch them grow on.

n behalf of the Trustees, staff and volunteers of the Plough Arts Centre, I would like to send our heartfelt and sincere thanks to all supporters, friends and customers who have so kindly helped fund our recent campaign to enable our cinema to ‘Go Digital’!

The completed installation has just been signed off, and the Plough now boasts a state of the art Digital projector and associated screen and sound system. The upgrade, brought about by the demise of 35mm film stock has been of real benefit, with an enhanced viewing experience, and improved surround sound.

It has also meant that we can now screen events live by satellite from anywhere in the world, including plays screened directly from the RSC and the National Theatre. Audience figures have risen dramatically as the word spreads about the quality of the experience on offer at The Plough Arts Centre.

Our next and most important fundraising campaign involves the funding of a complete new IT system and box office system, which will allow better integration of internet and phone booking, a new lift (the current one has been condemned), and solar panels – to enable us to reduce the hefty electricity bills the centre faces monthly.

f you have been to the studio in the last 12 months to find it closed, then I offer apologies to all my customers. I had taken on a school photography contract, which I never envisaged would involve as many hours as it did, the result being I was never able to get into the studio apart from at weekends.

I miss my studio and being in Torrington so much that I’ve passed on the contract this year, and I will be back in the studio from March ready for the summer season of weddings and portraits!

If you need an identity photo, you will now be able to pop in without making an appointment weeks in advance! I will be offering lots of exciting new sessions and special seasonal offers so keep an eye on my website and Facebook page over the coming year. I’m really happy to have made the decision to be back and I can’t wait to see you all in the studio soon!
