reat Torrington has received notice that Lloyds Bank in our town is to close at the end of June, leaving our community without a service widely used by many of our traders and public alike. We are told that this is because online banking is the way forward, and that this has reduced use of the facility, however we are often in a queue for this local service, and the ATM sometimes runs out of money because of the pressure of need. It is ludicrous to say it’s underused.

It is suggested that a van could take its place, but this cannot replace the service the building gives now; hours, security, and locality etc.

Our Council will be doing everything we can to change the minds of Lloyds, and will inform them of the difficulties this change presents. The nearest bank, other than Nationwide, will mean journeys to Bideford, with a fractured bus service making life more unsustainable in a town where many more houses are proposed.

Write to your MP and to Lloyds and oppose this act This reminds me of the cuts proposed to our NHS services by those without knowledge of the distance and problems that will be evident should this go ahead and the misery which will be caused.

We also have news that our post office facility is proposed to move to McColls on New Road - watch out for a public consultation.

There is a ‘Save our Hospital Services’ (SOHS) public meeting in the drama studio at Great Torrington School at 7pm on March 16th. Please come along and support our fight to save our hospital services.

On the 1st April a human red line will surround our community hospital, ‘This is not an April Fool’s Joke’. All hospitals around Devon will be doing this on the same day. Look out for posters advising times.

ach year the Town Council gives an award to the person or persons whom it feels has provided local public service of the highest order. Such service can be of many years’ duration or something extraordinary that was for a short time.

The essence is that the time given is voluntary and the people benefiting are within the parish of Great Torrington.

The Town Council invites you to submit nominations which should be accompanied by a written explanation as to why you believe the person or persons should be considered, what they have done, how long for and who has benefited.

Great Torrington Remembers Every Man Leading Seaman Fred Bangham 1879-1917

T

he Bangham family were hugely influential in bringing the gloving industry to Great Torrington; their name would have been equivalent to royalty in the town at that time. Fred Bangham was born, went to school and was married here.

All records show that Fred Bangham held the rank of Leading Seaman and by the end of 1917 was serving on the British steamer SS Braeside, which weighed in at 569 tons. He was killed in a U-boat attack in 1917; all hands were lost at sea.

Before his death he had a family and his descendants continue to live in the town and have been extremely helpful in this research.

Town Council Needs Your Views on Bus Services in Great Torrington

A

number of you have spoken to your Councillors about bus services around the town. The main bus service is operated

by Stagecoach, and they have not found it possible to provide more services within their budget.

The Great Torrington Town Council is keen to explore all avenues, and has set up a small task group to consider what options are available.

To help us, we would like to hear your views. If you feel that a particular bus service would be beneficial, please let us know. We will need to know what areas you think it should cover, when, and how often you would use it.

If enough people will use a particular service, we will try to find a way of getting such a service into operation.

Friday 31st March at St. Michael and All Angels Church, 7.30pm reat Torrington Silver Band will be joined by some very willing singers to bring you an evening’s entertainment of well-known music; from the Floral Dance to Simon and Garfunkel. We will be celebrating May Fair and spring, with a little Old Time Music Hall thrown in for good measure!

As the concert is close enough to Easter, there will be a small prize for the best Easter bonnet so be inspired and start creating!

This year our Mayor has been raising money for two local charities important to every Torrington resident; the May Fair and Carnival committee and Torrington in Bloom. May Fair has traditionally been one of the most significant annual events in the town involving the children of the town, many local people and bringing past residents back to visit. Torrington in Bloom makes sure the town is beautifully presented, not only for us residents but for the many visitors we have throughout the year.

Please try to support this musical event or, if you can’t make it on the night, donations will always be gratefully received by Karen at the Town Council office! Entry £5 on the door.

New Community Multi-arts Festival in Great Torrington!

Help provide funds towards re-opening the historic town hall

reat Torrington is holding a festival over three days in June, based around it’s fabulous town square, to help raise money to reopen its historic town hall.

The festival’s focus reflects the diverse and wonderful community the town has, by putting on a wide range of events; with music ranging from rock to jazz; art from formal to abstract and performances from modern to traditional. We will have talks and presentations, street theatre, dance, children’s activities and a myriad of other festival goodies across several town streets and venues.

Artists from across the UK have been enticed to come to entertain, with a little something for everyone. Alongside the wide-ranging music on offer, there will be a day of children’s activities (Saturday) and a day of dance (Sunday), all in the square and free in the streets!

The church will host local participation shows, commemorating the famous botanist and illustrator Keble Martin, once of the parish, with a project from Great Torrington School. The museum

will be open (in part) and illustrated talks of local interest will be presented, along with a town walk providing context to the mediaeval history of the town.

Art is well catered for, with an exhibition by John Hurford, a local artist with an international reputation, and Paul Seed, local film and TV director, who will be exhibiting photos in the Plough Gallery.

The town is famous for its May Fair celebration, and this festival will be building on that, reinforcing its position as one of the strongest communities in the country. The vibrancy of the town’s folk is the main inspiration behind the whole event. “Torrington has such a wide range of fun-loving good people that we felt we wanted to put on a festival that reflected that”, says Matt Whittaker one of the organizers.

The Plough will be the centre of proceedings, with a full programme of world and indie music, workshops, dances and film. Local artists and bands get a platform on which to play at the church on Friday, and the Torridge Vale

Club on Saturday, with the club hosting a special ‘youth’ show on Sunday afternoon with local hot favourite ‘boy band’ star Rich Cottell.

Other entertainment comes from The G.T. Silver Band, Gittisham Hall Jazz band, Truffetete French dance band, Morris and Appalachian dance, Streetz, Punch and Judy, Children’s Circus skill activities and plenty more.

There is much to see and do, ticket prices are being held at a minimum to encourage participation, and under 16’s are free! The festival is being funded with support from within Great Torrington; The Chamber of Trade, Town Council and the Rotary club, but if anyone else wishes to help fund some of the extensive ongoing costs, then please do get in contact.

Red Line Around the Torrington Community Hospital 1st April STP - A Daft Draft Plan.

This is no April Fool!

T

he Success Regime is planning massive cuts to health services in Devon as part of their STP Sustainability and Transformation Plan.

The STP will devastate the services we all depend on and must be stopped.

At a time of black and red alerts, with hospitals across Devon in crisis, those behind the STP plan to: • cut 590 acute and community beds across Devon • cut hundreds of nurses’ jobs and access to continuing care • cut acute services in North Devon • cut most of the remaining community hospitals.

They really believe there are no red lines when it comes to cuts. They claim to be able to deliver a better health service at the same time as making cuts to the tune of £550 million in Devon alone. On 1st April communities across Devon will put a human red line around each and every hospital. This will be a visible statement of our own red line, ‘no cuts to any health services anywhere in Devon’.

or the first time in our history, since the Commons Act of 1889 and the establishment of the Great Torrington Commons Conservators, this year’s AGM will be held in public. There is no legal provision for the public to attend either our annual or regular meetings. However, as our proceedings as a trust and a registered charity are subject to formal audit and public scrutiny, it makes sense to invite the public to the AGM. The Conservators are very concerned that the people of the town whom we serve, should have a full understanding of what we are trying to achieve and how and why we make certain decisions. This is your opportunity to meet them in person, see how we operate and ask questions about current issues relating to the Commons.

Play it safe with trees!

Regular walkers on Rolle Road may be aware that early in February a large tree came down, completely blocking the path. It is worth noting that we keep records of all the larger trees on the Commons, and make regular and routine inspections to spot any which could be in a potentially dangerous condition. Sometimes stormy weather can weaken otherwise healthy specimens and down they come.

Safety is always our primary concern, and we do whatever we can to remove fallen trees as quickly as possible. However, as individuals, everyone has a responsibility to behave with proper regard for safety; it’s common sense really. A fallen tree is still a potential danger, with immense weight supported on fragile and unstable branches, and you should keep well away. Imagine our surprise when we discovered a few people climbing over and through branches to continue on the path, one even helping small children to get through the tangled branches. If you find a large fallen tree on the Commons, there are only three things you should do:1. Contact the Conservators on 01805 462463 2. Keep well clear and discourage others from approaching 3. Greenbank Play Area Update from Pearce Homes

B

y the time you read this notice the long anticipated works to upgrade the Greenbank Play Area will be well under way. We know that children in particular will be excited, so we would appreciate everyone’s help in keeping them safe by ensuring they stay well away from the works until complete.

It seems a long time ago since we made the proposal to the Town and District Councils that we deliver this community gain as part of the package of works at Greenbank. On the 12th August 2015 we set up our marquee on the central green at Greenbank, to carry out a play space consultation to find out what local children would really like to see as replacements for the old equipment.

The play space scheme was subsequently designed by our partner, T K Play of Torrington, to meet with the consultation outcome and the scheme was agreed. On 7th February 2017 the play space was gifted by the Westward Housing Group to Torrington Town Council.

T K Play commenced the works on 20th February, delivering upgrades for Pearce Homes and Torrington Town Council. Having been closed for a considerable time, and weather permitting, the play space could be back in use by the end of March/ early April.

We are very proud to have been the inspiration and the driving force to make this community benefit happen, and we are delighted to have done so working in partnership with Torrington Town Council, Westward Housing and T K Play.

We have also been busy tidying up various areas, but certainly during February the inclement weather has hindered us somewhat! Our local Horticultural Society is also renovating the flowerbed by S & G Carpets, based on a visit to RHS Hyde Hall and the dry garden there. I can’t wait to see the results!

Two important dates for your diaries: 8th April is the ‘Big Bake’ event at Dartington Crystal, one of the Mayor’s charity days. Start thinking about cake recipes with a ‘floral theme’ for Torrington in Bloom! (Or a vegetable theme!) 27th May the Secret Memorial Garden and Torrington in Bloom will be hosting the Torrington Silver Band, we are planning a plant stall and probably a raffle or tombola, not confirmed exactly what yet.

Sarah Chesters has also confirmed she is happy to judge our Best Garden competition this year and the date/entry form will be in a future issue. Lastly, the potato growing competition will be getting underway this month for Year 4 of the junior school, the potatoes currently are being chitted.

Great Torrington Memory Cafe

T

he Great Torrington Memory Cafe is open to anyone worried about their memory, about someone else’s memory, or those affected by dementia.

The cafe provides practical information and support, as well as the opportunity for people with dementia/ memory loss and their families and carers, to ask questions and listen to others’ experiences. It also offers an informal and social environment in which to learn new skills, undertake meaningful activities, listen to guest speakers and enjoy live music.

We are open from 10.30am till 12.30pm on the second Thursday of the month till April, when we will be open on the second and fourth Thursdays until September, then we go back to one session a month. The memory cafe is held at the Methodist Church meeting room at the top of Mill Street.

February saw us being put through our paces with Renata and her ‘chair exercise’ activity session. In March, Theresa will be encouraging us to sing along and enjoy a wide range of music.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Atlantic Flower Club for their kind donation.

We are an independent organisation and rely totally on grants and donations to keep this service going for the people of Torrington and surrounding areas.

y the time you read this our new spring/summer programme should be hot off the press and either delivered to your home or you can pick up a copy here at The Plough. As you would expect, this brand new exciting programme will be showering you with big name events to suit all tastes and ages which will take you well into the summer months.

Live music sees such greats as Dr Feelgood, Sarah Jane Morris with Antonio Forcione, Snake Davis, Ezio, Gilad Atzmon and his band, Miranda Sykes, the return of the amazing Albert Lee and His American Band. We are also very excited to announce we have the truly wonderful American singer Vonda Shepard (of Ally McBeal fame!) and not to be missed, even though he won’t be singing, an audience with Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet fame!

Three stunning RHS Garden Rosemoor events (in the new Garden Room) are already selling well; Andy Fairweather Low and his band; Leo Sayer and Show of Hands – book soon to avoid disappointment.

If theatre is more your thing, then why not come and see one of our entertaining live theatre shows? Don’t forget our ‘live by satellite’ screenings too; big name productions straight from the National Theatre and the RSC. With our continually expanding workshop and outreach programme there will be something to tempt all you artistic folk out there. We have printing courses, musical workshops, and painting and sculpture workshops for all ages and abilities. Each exhibition is displayed for a calendar month, with the opening view in the company of the artist on the first Friday at 7pm.

March Films at The Plough

M

arch is when we get to see many of the films nominated for Oscars (although we have already had some, such as La La Land, which we are screening at the end of February!): Lion, Jackie, Manchester by the Sea, Hacksaw Ridge, 20th Century Women and Hidden Figures all have nominations in various categories. Toni Erdmann is up for Best Foreign Language Film.

Lots of other well-known or lesser-known films, including the Trainspotting sequel T2, a “blackly comic gem” Prevenge from the co-writer and star of Sightseers, and Italian film Sweet Dreams, with optional Italian meal (pre-booking essential).

Most exciting of all is Demain (Tomorrow) which The Plough is proud to be screening as one of the first, and one of the few venues in the UK: travel the world of solutions is the theme.

Inspired by the January exhibition ‘Leaving Home, Finding Home?’ an exhibition of paintings by Henrietta Job based on her experience of working in refugee camps in France and Greece, local primary schools provide an exhibition of work inspired by the current plight of refugees, alongside a selection of other project work.

This annual exhibition has become a firm favourite in the exhibition calendar and is always a delightful and inspiring glimpse into the fantastic work that goes on in our local schools.

She was the signature poster artist for the Guanlan Resident International Artists in China, and was an invited artist at the Shanghai International Printmaking Show and conference.

by John Hobbs, with soloists Rebecca Smith and Jason Bomford, there will also be a full orchestra.

Our programme will include Elgar’s Music Makers, with its memorable melodies, also his gorgeous Sea Pictures, a setting of five poems by Arthur O’Shaughnessy. The Duruflé Requiem is a work of haunting beauty, inspired by Gregorian chants and rich in harmony, one of some choir members’ favourite pieces of choral music ever.

Great Start to the Year for Torrington Amateur Police Boxing Club

T

he boxing club has had a great start to the year, with lots of new, eager faces.

Nathan Board boxed in Bournemouth on 4th February. He improved in each round, but a slow start in the first meant he lost on points to his counter-punching opponent. At the time of writing, Nathan is already focused on his next bout in Torbay, and we are looking forward to Ned Pettifer’s bout in Port Talbot and Trai Sheppard’s bout in Glastonbury. Matt Gray is lined up to box in Bideford on 4th March.

We currently have 15 carded boxers so we’re hoping for a full house of local boxers, (subject to matching). Please do come and support us and bring your friends and family along for a great night

We are also running a free minibus on the night, picking up from South St car park. First collection at 6.45pm, running every 15 minutes until 8pm, so no excuses. There will of course be a licensed bar, hot food (pasties and hot dogs), raffle, and music by Bustin Justin. We’re all really excited for a great night; see you there.

The recreational boxers have seen a record number so far this year, with up to 25 people at some sessions, putting in lots of hard work to improve fitness; it’s brilliant, keep up the good work!

The boxing club was honoured to be invited to a tour of Children’s Hospice Southwest’s Little Bridge House at the beginning of February, in recognition of

the funds we raised for them last year (over £1200 when we ran continuously up and down Mill St for a day). We were absolutely blown away by what we saw.

Such a fantastic place and they do such an amazing job for so many local families in need. We are planning to make our fundraising efforts an annual event for them. Wayne has something different planned for this year, although he’s currently keeping it secret from us, which I think is probably a bad sign although could it possibly be worse than running up and down Mill St?!

And last but certainly not least, we would like to congratulate Koby Sheppard on achieving his Bronze award as a new boxer.

Where Was The Gazebo at Rosemoor Originally Situated?

T

he 18th century gazebo was in the garden of Palmer House, New Street, which was built by John Palmer, brother-in-law of Sir Joshua Reynolds and it appears in some of the artist’s paintings. A letter in The Sunday Times of June 1929 from a certain E. E. Rudd states: ‘Sir – There is a gazebo in the grounds of Palmer House in this town with a fine view to the north. It is of historical interest, for Sir Joshua Reynolds and Dr Johnson have sat in it together.’

The gazebo was built possibly at the same time as Palmer House (1752) and was re-erected at Rosemoor in 1999.

In 1897 the Palmers sold Palmer House and, following the subdivision of the Palmer estate during the 20th century, the gazebo ended up marooned at the intersection of four boundary walls. Inaccessible to the public and with no particular owner, the Grade II listed building gradually deteriorated and, at one time, a local man kept his horse in it! It became so dilapidated that by the 1990s it featured prominently on the English Heritage Buildings At Risk register and the Devon Historic Buildings Trust set out to save the building.

As it was in an inaccessible location, it was decided to dismantle the gazebo and move it to a site where the general public could enjoy this unique building.

The RHS agreed to site it at Rosemoor, and take over its stewardship.

In a project that took more than three years and cost over £100,000, the Devon Historic Buildings Trust, aided

by various grants and bequests, took the gazebo apart and rebuilt it, using the original components. It took twelve weeks of painstaking work to carefully measure, dismantle, catalogue and transport the remains of the gazebo to Rosemoor where it was reassembled following the original 18th century construction. It took five months to rebuild and was reopened on 23rd September 1999.

The gazebo is a two-storey structure of rendered stone rubble and a slatehung first floor. It has a hipped slate roof and a small ball finial and wroughtiron weather vane at the apex. It is an octagonal building with a flight of stone steps at the rear to a first floor room which is entered through a panelled door and restored wooden porch. Inside is a small stone fireplace with slate hearth flanked by china cupboards. There is panelling below the bay window and a moulded dado rail.

Some felt that an excessive amount of money was spent on restoring the gazebo and others regret that it has moved out of Torrington into the parish of St Giles-in-the-Wood. However, it is a fascinating little building with interesting historical associations and it now commands attractive views over the gardens towards Torrington, almost in sight of its original home.

am writing this message to all the supporters of our local community hospital. We thank you for your continued support to fight to have a hospital, with beds and services in our town, which is fit for purpose for our rural area.

We know that ‘Care Closer to Home’,

“We thank you for your continued support...” was an experiment in which Torrington was used a guinea pig, with no evidence-based research. It has failed many people, both here in the town and in our surrounding parishes. The closure of community hospitals with no realistic or safe alternative put in place, is happening all over Devon. We do support all these communities all over Devon.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff working in the NHS, and we will continue to support them during this very difficult and worrying time for all concerned.

How to Prevent Mammary Tumours in Female Dogs

T

he most common malignant cancer of dogs will affect up to 60% of susceptible animals if no preventative action is taken. Mammary tumours in bitches can be almost entirely prevented by a simple operation at a young age.

Having your bitch spayed (neutered) is a surgical procedure where both the uterus and ovaries are entirely removed.

This means there is no chance of these organs ever becoming cancerous.

Mammary tumours are caused by the hormonal changes each time a bitch comes into season. Unbelievably, a bitch that has had five or more heats is two thousand times more likely to develop this cancer later in life, than a bitch spayed before her first heat!

Spaying after two heats reduces the risk to one quarter of that of an entire bitch.

In many breeds there is no benefit in your bitch having her first season.

It is only Dobermans or Old English Sheepdogs that should have their first season before being spayed.

Researchers have found that letting these two breeds have their first season decreases the risk of incontinence in later life. This is only the case for these two breeds.

Female puppies can be spayed from six months of age. Their first season will normally occur when they are between eight and 11 months old. She will come into season approximately every six months (twice yearly). If you are waiting for your puppy to have her first season, then wait 6 weeks after she has finished her season before having her spayed.

There are also additional advantages of spaying. It also prevents pyometra (a serious infection of the uterus that is common in older entire bitches), this is a very serious condition, which puts your pet’s life at risk and requires emergency surgery. Spaying avoids the mess and inconvenience of heats and any risk of accidental pregnancy. Some bitches will suffer a ‘false pregnancy’ after being in season, where her body thinks it is pregnant. This can cause mammary development, behavioural changes and even abdominal swelling. This can be stressful for both bitches and owners, and again is something that can be avoided by spaying.

Spaying is an important health benefit to your female dog, and the fewer heats she has had before she is spayed the greater the benefits!

Great Torrington Heritage Museum Refurbishment Your Museum Needs You!

n update for the museum; the refurbishment is not far away, hopefully early summer, when we should hear if the funding has been successful. However before then the majority of the artefacts will have to be carefully packed and listed into boxes for storage.

We need extra hands to help with this, and I am sure there are some retired people in Torrington who might be able to spend time helping the community museum. We would love to hear from you. There are many skills needed to run a modern museum, and we really do need help. You can learn so much about the history of Torrington, and spend a morning or afternoon chatting to likeminded people with humour thrown in!

While 14 South Street, the main building of the museum, is being refurbished, the Market House will be kept open for visitors and we will be holding talks and exhibitions in there during the summer months.

orking in cooperation with The Plough Arts Centre, we’re organizing an event around the screenings of the hugely inspirational film Demain (Tomorrow) on 12th and 14th March. This extraordinarily successful film shows amazing creative projects from around the world that are real life, community led, practical solutions to our food, energy, education, economic and democracy challenges. So we’re bringing together as many North Devon groups, movers and shakers as we can, offering them the opportunity to take a small information stall and to network with the film audiences and each other.

Gluten: Only brief guidelines here.

Gluten is a tough elastic protein found in wheat, rye and barley. It’s a very sticky molecule, so anyone with severe gluten

14 chromosomes different to ancient wheat. Our bodies can only adapt to such changes over a much longer period. Added to this, the modern diet includes wheat several times every day. Overuse of any food may result in sensitivity, especially a difficult one like wheat.

What about manufactured gluten free products? If the ingredients include sugar, refined starches, flavourings, additives or high salt, beware! Often used to disguise the taste of denatured, poor quality ingredients, gluten free junk food!

What are the alternatives? Rice, millet, corn and oats are excellent gluten free grains. Also seeds which can be used like grains: quinoa, buckwheat (nothing to do with wheat!), aramanth and teff. They’re usefully high in protein.

Gluten or other sensitivities/allergies can be healed. Our bodies have enormous innate powers of self-healing.

But to heal, we must consider and respect our bodies’ needs and be willing to provide it with excellent nutrition and a harmonious lifestyle.

Social Bridge Group

On Tuesday 26th March 2013, the bus shelter that Frithelstockstone has patiently awaited for many decades, was finally installed.

Its provision has been made possible by kind donations from Councillor Sam Robinson (Devon County Council) and Councillor Philip Pennington (Torridge District Council), both of whom contributed from their allocation of Locality Funds.

The shelter was supplied and erected by GoShelters of Southport, Lancashire.

There are a number of people who are interested in starting a social bridge group and will welcome others with a similar interest. Growing Camellias & Rhododendrons

I

n this part of Devon we are blessed with largely acid soil and high rainfall, which means that we can grow those lovely harbingers of spring – camellias and rhododendrons,.

These woodland plants enjoy similar conditions; growing best in free-draining soil with plenty of organic matter such as leaf mould. Find a sheltered position in light shade, and they will reward you with colourful blooms throughout the spring.

Be aware that if the sun catches the plant on a frosty morning, the blooms will be damaged.

Take care not to plant too deep, but mulch loosely with an 8cm (3in) layer of chipped conifer bark or other acid material. Little pruning is necessary, except to remove dead wood and spent flowers if practical. If you need to keep your camellia or azalea in check, they will not be harmed by cutting back in spring immediately after flowering.

If you do have alkaline soil or limited space, then you can grow these plants in pots. Deciduous rhododendrons (azaleas) and camellias are particularly suited to container growing. Use ericaceous potting compost and make sure you have a supply of rain water. Do not let the plant dry out in summer (this will ensure flower buds for the following year) and they should be fed in spring or early summer with ericaceous feed.

Re-pot every other year into fresh compost and in the intervening year, replace the top 5cm (2in) of compost. If you already have it in the largest pot you can manage, trim off up to 20% of the roots and re-pot in the same pot, filling the gaps with fresh potting compost.

The Christian women of the Philippines wrote the service and it has been translated into 1,000 different languages and dialects, to be used on the same day throughout the whole world, starting at sunrise over the island of Samoa and continuing until sunset off the coast of American Samoa. The day of prayer is not just for women, everyone is welcome to attend the service.

Just as the service was being written, Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines and caused much destruction. The people of the Philippines earnestly need our prayers. Life on the islands must go on despite all the natural disasters and the different living conditions. The people go on in faith, knowing that God is with them. Everyone is welcome.

Torrington Probus to Extend Outings Programme

hen a baby is born into the family, a dog’s life changes dramatically, often for the worse. Attention, naturally, moves to the two-legged baby. The dog experiences new smells, new sounds and disturbed sleep. Unless taught otherwise, a dog may find each of these experiences stressful. When stress triggers occur close together in time, they may push

The Winkleigh Singers’ Spring Concert

T

he Winkleigh Singers are preparing for their Spring Concert on 1st April, and are performing Mozart’s Requiem and Listz’s Via Crucis.

The concert on 1st April is at St Michael and All Angels Church, Great Torrington at 7.30pm.

For this concert they are delighted to be joined by four of Britain’s most popular and established soloists, including Elisabeth Roberts, soprano, who sang at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics. Susan Legg, mezzo soprano, is described by legendary Christa Ludwig as ‘a beautiful voice with a fine coloratura. Mark Chaundry is an award winning tenor who has performed in many prestigious venues throughout Britain, and bass Christopher Foster’s international career has taken him throughout Europe and even to Beijing where he was a soloist in the first English language performance in Handel’s Messiah on Chinese soil.

The audience will be privileged to hear well known organist Andrew Millington accompany the choir. He recently retired as organist at Exeter Cathedral.

Torrington Men’s Shed Working for the Community

S

hedders continue to keep themselves busy; completing tasks for the Torrington and surrounding communities, or just having a cup of tea and a chat. Completed tasks over the past three months include: * Construction of roadside advertising boards for Torrington Players * The restoration of the fine wood effigy of Our Lady in Torrington Parish Church * The stripping and varnishing of the first display board of past presidents for Torrington Rotary Club * The completion of memory boxes for use by residents at West Heanton residential home * The restoration of the wooden slats of a number of public park benches in Torrington At the moment Shedders are preparing display boards for the 2017 Torrington May Fair, for the May Fair Committee.

The Shed continues to benefit from support from donors and trusts as well as from support in kind, all much appreciated. BAM Construction has donated pallet wood, providing us with a dedicated skip at their South Molton school construction site. This is part of a national scheme to ensure that waste construction materials are put to good community use. The Shed now has the equipment to dismantle pallets and then plane the timber ready for construction of required items. Local support and grant aid has also enabled The Shed to purchase a routing machine.

Shedders visited Exeter Men in Sheds, picking up useful tips from this long-established Shed and also had an enjoyable day out at the Screwfix trade fair.

We are always looking for new Shedders. No special skills are needed, although they are always very welcome.

I

was very sad when I visited the kennels recently to see that our friend Diesel was still there. Now although I am very fond of Diesel, he really isn’t very keen on me. I haven’t taken this personally as he appears to not be very sociable with any dogs, although I have seen him with people and he absolutely adores his human friends and especially likes cuddles. I could very easily fall for him, as he is an extremely handsome chappie, and I really can’t understand why no one has offered him a home. He is still a youngster at only 18 months old, but how sad that he has been in kennels without a mum or dad for a third of his life.

When visiting I also saw that Alice had been returned, yet another German Shepherd who can be choosy around other dogs. I believe this is because they are not socialised as puppies, and as a breed are extremely sensitive and never really given the opportunity to see how much fun it is to play with other dogs. There are lots of puppy classes and adult training classes in the area, which not only help socialise your four legged friend, but are also good fun and provide exercise for you humans as well!

Aunty Lynne asked me to thank everyone for their very kind donations taken into our Appledore shop which are help raising funds to keep these dogs safe. The shop is currently open Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm, but has had to close on a Saturday due to lack of volunteers. If anyone can spare a few hours either during the week or on a Saturday please do call Lynne on 01769 560878. We need help with serving in the shop or simply steaming and sorting through our clothes. We are also looking for volunteers who might be able to help with collection days at retail stores throughout the area, usually on a Saturday or Sunday.

British Native Wild Flowers to Grow in your Garden Orchis mascula

M

any orchid species are now so rare that the locations where they grow are a closely guarded secret! Some are more widespread such as Orchis mascula.

We know it as the Early Purple Orchid and it is relatively common around the Torrington area - I have certainly seen them growing locally. The preferred growing conditions are deciduous woodland edges, hedge banks and scrub, occasionally along clifftops.

The Early Purple Orchid is a lovely perennial with glossy dark green, heavily spotted leaves that form a basal layer from which the flower stem emerges in spring. The flower spikes are a pinkishpurple colour and stems can reach about 40cm in height (approx 12-15ins).

Orchids can be elusive plants, because they often are very slow to germinate and can almost completely disappear from one area only to reappear several years later. The Early Purple Orchid tends to appear in loose groups of plants and can germinate on cleared land that was previously overgrown.

Growing orchids from seed requires considerable patience; several years may elapse before you see results. It is possible to purchase cultivated forms of native species, but they are expensive and need the right soil conditions in which to thrive.

All native orchids are protected by law and you should never pick the flowers or seed pods, or dig up any plants. It is probably best to enjoy these beauties in the wild, leaving them undisturbed.

raised for their creativity, uniqueness and vocal acrobatics, this highly acclaimed choir from the University of Exeter embraces music of a variety of genres. After their winning performance in ‘The Choir: Garth’s Best in Britain’, aired on BBC2 in 2016 and the Voice Festival UK in 2015, we’re very pleased to welcome them to Bratton Clovelly on Friday 2nd June. Doors and bar will open at 7pm, there’ll be a concert at 7.30pm followed by a Q and A session and a light buffet.

This performance completes an exciting and diverse programme for 2017, organised by newly established charity, Bratton Clovelly Festival. It includes two art exhibitions and five music events, drawing on local Devon and Cornish talent.

In these early days, the charity has limited funds, but through the kindness of local people and small local charitable trusts, it has been able to produce some first class entertainment right in the heart of this small rural community, keeping prices low and affordable to all. It’s very much a community project, with local groups such as the W.I. producing cream teas and other food, volunteers creating website and flyers and helping to set up tables, chairs, lights or whatever is needed.

An Evening of Entertainment Raising Funds for Farms for City Children

T

he Bondleigh Barn Band, a group of over 40 players of brass, woodwind and string instruments (as well as guitar, banjo, mandolin and keyboards) will present a programme of music from across four centuries in a variety of styles. Audience members will be encouraged to sing along from time to time if they wish.This family friendly event will be at 7.30pm on Saturday 25th March at Hatherleigh Community Centre in Hatherleigh. Admission free.

Formed only four years ago, the band is made up of local musicians who enjoy playing together. It has raised over £3,000 for charity already and there will be a retiring collection and raffle for local charity, Farms for City Children. Come along and bring your friends!

ix intrepid souls braved the foul weather to come to the first meeting of 2017, where the chosen topic was ‘The Lunch’. Our evening began with an entertaining piece about Donald Trump making a state visit to the UK - told from the viewpoint of one of the Queen’s favourite corgis. This was followed by the story of a woman busy preparing for lunch with some girlfriends she hadn’t seen for years. The narrator told us about her frenzied cleaning of her house, and the food delivery she received. We learnt how she took the credit for cooking the food when asked by her friends. The narrator, who turns out to be a dog, is disappointed to be told there are no leftovers for him! Our third offering was a humorous poem based on Charles Causeley’s poem for children entitled ‘Colonel Fazackerley ButterworthToast.’

One of our members, who has recently become a parent, read us his morality tale about a naughty leprechaun being spanked by a hedgehog for not moving out of the way for others on the path. It had overtones of Roald Dahl or Grimms’ Fairytales about it. The final offering of the night was a poem remembering school lunches in war time and how growing and eating your own food from seed was considered the norm.

I believe that people should always remember the Holocaust so that history doesn’t repeat itself and we never see anything like it again.

Eva’s visit really made me think about just how easily everything can change and your world can be turned upside down. In just an instant, everything can be different. I now realise that you should cherish everything in your life; you never know when it could change for the better or for the worse. I wish now that I had asked Eva what she missed most whilst she was in the camp and what it was that got her through it because that is not just something that you can read from a history book.

H

omework has no value now, does it? Well, if that’s the approach school children are making – they can kiss their exam results goodbye. In ten years’ time when they reflect on their minimum wage jobs, I wonder if they will consider their lack of commitment towards homework as a reason for their downfall.

Responsibility is one of the earliest characteristics children have to learn.

Without it, how will they survive in life?

It is a simple statistic that the children who do not take any work home with them do worse in life than those who do. This is because they have not taken responsibility for their education. Simple.

So, not only does homework keep the facts in our heads, but it prepares us for the harsh realities of life after school.

Without homework, how will children learn? In my opinion, they simply wouldn’t, which means many children will go down an unhappy path just by not doing their maths questions. School can only teach so much, which is why children have to take their education into their own hands. It’s a fact that doing 20 minutes of reading a day enhances your vocabulary, which demonstrates the importance of learning in your own time.

Have you ever seen your parents take home work after a long day? I have.

Have you ever seen them enjoy it? I haven’t. But one thing I did see was that they were capable of getting the job done. My parents had to endure endless hours of homework, which they obviously hated, but they gained from it.

There are things you don’t want to do in life – like homework, but without it, you wouldn’t be capable of many things, for example, getting a good job to support a family. Homework is vital.
