From Your Mayor

O

n the 16th May, I was honoured to be elected the Mayor for the next 12 months. First I would like to say a very big thank you to Cllr Margaret Brown, for being such a hardworking, caring Mayor; Margaret works tirelessly for Great Torrington, both at Town Council, and at Torridge District Council. She led the town when we were chosen to work with Devon County Council and the Home Office in relocating the refugee boys, and the town opened its arms and gave so generously. I hope I can follow on in Margaret’s shoes, but it’s a big act to follow. Thank you Margaret, it was a pleasure to work with you as your deputy. My diary is filling up with appointments, both in town and the surrounding areas, I will keep you updated on these events. My chosen charities this year will be, firstly, The Torrington Army Cadet unit. A few weeks ago the Mayor, Di Davey and myself went to a presentation evening,

Torrington Food Bank Appeal Library News

T

he Torrington Food Bank would like to thank everyone who supports us, we remain busy and we are very grateful for all your donations. Some time ago we asked for no more baked beans as we had such a good stock, but we now find we are very low on them, along with biscuits, tinned veg, sugar and coffee. We are of course very grateful for anything you feel able to donate, but thought it might be helpful to mention what we are most in need of at the present time. Opening times: 10am until 12pm. Every Tuesday at the Baptist Church, New Street and every Saturday at the Castle Hill Building (over the Library). Service available to Great Torrington residents and surrounding parishes. We provide a basic food parcel consisting of tinned or dried food for people who need emergency help due to sickness, homelessness, benefit cuts or delays, or domestic violence for example. Please alert us of those in need and spread the word or support us by making a donation of tins or packets (subject to opening times) at the Parish Church, Methodist Church, Co-op or Tourist Information Centre in Castle Hill, or during Food Bank opening times. You can check out all the mobile library timetables at www.devon.gov.uk/yourmobilelibrary. htm. Coffee & IT Sessions – Helping You with Your Gadgets!: “Most of my working life’s been spent with computers, so seeing a volunteering opportunity via TorrAGE Ageing Well to offer IT tuition to silver surfers in Torrington Library; I knew I had something to offer. I thought it would keep my IT skills up to date, but I am getting so much more than that. I find it very rewarding, and sometimes challenging, helping people who have a wide variety of needs. I help people with their own laptops, tablets and smartphones. The range of topics is very varied too, from simply logging on and using email and browsing the internet, to helping someone trace their family history. When you have helped someone they really appreciate it, and it gives me a warm glow when I know that they have achieved what they wanted. I am available most Thursday and Friday mornings at the Library, so call by or phone them on 01805 622107 to book your slot. To anybody thinking of volunteering I can only say don’t hesitate DO IT, you won’t regret it.” Perry Elford

STITCH Update

W

e have nothing further to report yet on our Secretary of State referral, but we are in regular contact with DCC to ensure that they continue to monitor its progress through the appropriate channels. We now have a new Devon County Councillor for Torridge Rural in Andrew Saywell, and we shall be pressing him not only get to grips with the bed situation, but to apply pressure to the government to review the whole healthcare offering in North Devon. If pressure is not maintained, the powers that be might assume that the problem will simply go away - so we all have to fight to make it very clear that we are not going anywhere until a solution is found. It is distressing enough to be very sick and needing specialist hospital treatment, without the added stress and anxiety that those essential services we rely on at NDDH could be removed at the drop of a hat. When the hospital was opened in 1979, it was the fruition of many years of campaigning to provide our rural population with access to quality healthcare. Before that, the local services were so limited that patients had to travel to Exeter and Plymouth hospitals for emergency care, with the real risk of dying on the way - and babies often had to be delivered en route, putting mother and baby at risk. Now almost 40 years on this is being promoted as the acceptable alternative to NDDH services - have the lunatics taken over the asylum? Feelings are running high and the strength of public opinion is such that any proposals to remove vital services will be challenged every step of the way. Continue to lobby your town and county councillors, MPs, newspapers and social media and support the SOHS campaign. We must continue to voice our concerns loud and clear to get justice for our community. STITCH

ith the Round the Square Festival nearly upon us, we would like to make sure you are fully aware of all the events occurring over the weekend. So many, and not enough room to tell you all the information, so here are some guidelines! Music – lots – at The Plough, Howe Hall, the Church and the Torridge Vale Club. Indy, pop, reggae, afrobeats, rock, world, folk and European are all included, and though you may not have heard of the artists involved, they are all booked from being seen and are top notch! Don’t’ forget the Torrington Brass band concert in the Howe Hall on Friday evening. Talks and a Walk (supported by Berry’s Accountants). These are taking place at the Museum, Saturday and Sunday; themes include archaeology of Torrington, Thomas Fowler, the changing coasts with the AONB team and ‘life of a verge’ with the N.D. Bioshere. Restricted to 20 places - these are not to be missed, opportunities to find out ‘stuff’ from the locale. Children’s Activities (supported by Torrington Rotary). Saturday and Sunday in the streets of the town centre; most are free (donations happily accepted) and fun for all to get involved in. Day of Dance, Sunday in the streets, come and watch, or get involved. Dance workshops (French in The Plough) and then a French dance, Morris for all on Saturday, and Lindy Hop on Sunday. The church has presentations with, and by, the local school covering the life of Rev. Keble Martin the botanic illustrator, and an evening of local artists. Art & Photographic exhibitions, a fiddle workshop with the genius Nick Wyke, games in the Vicarage gardens (along with afternoon tea), and film are all represented, come along and get involved in one of Torrington’s finest festivals for many years! The festival has been the brainchild of organiser Matt Whittaker, and we are indebted to help from volunteers who have made the weekend possible. Kind support has been given by Berry’s accountants, the Co-op, Webbers, and Unique Boutique, along with the Plough, the Chamber of Trade, the Town Council and Torrington Rotary. Profits raised will go towards helping fund the re-opening of the Town Hall. Tickets are available from The Plough Arts Centre and on the door if available. A full programme of events is available online at www.roundthesquare.co.uk.

Keble Martin Concert Friday 16th June 7.30pm

he Keble Martin concert at St Michaels Church in Torrington will be a celebration of Reverend Keble Martin, vicar of the Church in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Artistic and literary license will be the order of the day and some lovely tunes and songs will resonate through the wonderful acoustic space of our church. £5 per person and there will be a raffle. I

am an experienced bookkeeper with over 20 years bookkeeping knowledge, and for a number of years have been running my own successful bookkeeping business. Located centrally between Torrington, Barnstaple and Bideford, I am on hand to visit clients at their premises, or if they prefer I can work from my office. My location is ideal for meeting with clients. Being able to meet with my clients means I can help and advise them when necessary, and get to know and understand their business. I have many local small and medium enterprises and sole traders as clients, who benefit from using a local bookkeeper. Understanding that every business is different, and has its own unique needs, is really important and that’s where I, as a certified bookkeeper, can help. Every business, regardless of size, is legally required to keep books. I aim to make running a client’s business as easy as possible for them, helping to ease the burden and free up valuable time. I am a member of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers, the world’s largest bookkeeping organisation, so clients can rest assured that they are making the right decision for their business. Parish Church May Fair Flower Festival

A

huge thank you to everyone who supported our three-day floral extravaganza over the May Fair weekend. Great Torrington is very proud of its talented flower arrangers, and we thank them all for their hard work, generosity and skills in making it a fantastic festival. Thank you also for the support of the Benefice Churches of Taddiport, Frithelstock and Little Torrington. So many visitors from far and wide, beyond the town, commented on the wonderful displays which were based on the theme of ‘How Great Torrington is’. We represented over 20 aspects of town life, past and present, ranging from The Tarka Trail and the Puffing Billy, to the Museum, Glove Factory, Rosemoor and Dartington, the W.I., Torrington Players and the Silver Band. Not to mention the Cavaliers and their bonfires, the Carnival, Town Twinning, Taddiport Chapel and the Boxing Day Hunt. You can view photographs online at the Parish Church website www.stmichaelstorrington.org.uk. It was an event not to be missed and so many people enjoyed it. Thank you also to those who provided delicious refreshments and generous raffle prizes. The Church was buzzing with lively conversation and gentle music as folk enjoyed the flowers and exhibitions. We are grateful too to those who loaned displays of historic May Fair dresses, archive photos and stunning images of work by the world renowned botanist Revd. William Keble Martin. He was Vicar of Great Torrington in the 1940’s. The Flower festival was a lovely event, made possible by dedicated teamwork and commitment to celebrating the life of our town and locality. There are two concerts in the Parish Church on 16th and 17th June as part of the ‘Round the Square’ Arts and Music Festival. We do hope you can join us then. Looking ahead, everyone is welcome to The Vicarage Garden Summer Fete on Saturday 1st July 12-4pm. All local organisations are welcome to have a (free) promotional stall or display to publicise their own activities. Please contact us at fr.peter@stmichaelstorrington.org.uk Ann Bevan

Popular PCSO Leaves the Town

T

his year’s May Fair was a very well attended and organised event. It showed the dedication of the people of Torrington and the pride in their town. One such person being the extremely well-known and popular PCSO Lorraine Kenneally. Not only was Carnival day Lorraine’s birthday, but it was her day off. Despite this, she insisted on working as it was also her last opportunity to police the event that she looks forward to every year. PCSO Kenneally has been working from Torrington Police Station for the past 18 years, initially as a Station Enquiry Officer and more recently as a Police Community Support Officer. Her latest role has been to help to pioneer the new pilot of the Divisional Support Team, which is proving to be extremely successful and will continue to support vulnerable people within the community. She is well known to many, and her knowledge of the area and people are second to none. But the time has come for Lorraine to move on to pastures new, and she will soon be taking up her new and challenging role, working on a pilot scheme being run from Barnstaple Police Station, on the Pathfinder Charging Diversion Scheme. Lorraine traditionally drives the Lead Police Car in the Torrington Carnival, and her colleagues made this year’s event one to remember for her. They entered into the spirit of carnival even more so by, to Lorraine’s surprise and embarrassment, dressing up her police car with birthday balloons, banners and posters, informing the vast crowds of her birthday and the fact that she was working her final carnival. Due to this, many choruses of ‘Happy Birthday’ could be heard along the entire route, with everyone joining in and helping her celebrate her birthday. Sergeant Dave Monkton of Torrington and Holsworthy Police said “It has been a privilege to work with Lorraine. Her knowledge of the people and town Torrington is outstanding. She has worked in and around the town for 18 years and will be greatly missed. I would however like to thank her for all her efforts over the many years and wish her well in her new role”. Sergeant Monkton also said that “The Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to provide the town with a dedicated presence in the town and can still be contacted in the usual ways”. He is also pleased to announce that PC Russ Collins has joined the team as the new Neighbourhood Beat Manager. Russ has moved from Okehampton Police Station. He is well experienced, having been a police officer for many years, and is very keen to learn his new beat and meet with the people of Torrington. He is now patrolling the area and is looking forward to meeting as many people as possible, as he gets used to his new role.

hanks to Maggi Rogers for running the craft session at the April 13th Memory cafe - everyone left with a beautiful paper daffodil. Also thanks to David Clinch for his songs and stories which had everyone enthralled at the April 27th meeting. The first meeting in June will be cancelled, as the Methodist Hall will be used as a polling station for the general election. On Thursday 22nd June Swanswood will be at the café, entertaining us with music and song. Renata will be returning and putting us through our paces with chair exercises on Thursday 13th July. On the 27th customers will have the opportunity to have a hand massage. Just a reminder that you can access a lot of information on our website which is:www.greattorringtonmemorycafe.org.uk There are links to other sites which people with dementia and their carers might find useful. We are always looking for volunteers, so if you would like to join a dedicated team and can spare two hours a month then contact me for more information about the role. People who attend the cafe are from all walks of life and of varying ages. Some people may have had a recent diagnosis of dementia, whilst others may be worried about their memory and want advice. People who attend find that they continue to come along and value the cafe for its welcoming, informal and relaxed atmosphere. The cafe offers a listening ear, and a couple of hours break from the daily regular routines. If you or a family member are affected by memory loss, then do come along and get a warm welcome as well as support and information. Success for Torrington Police Amateur Boxing Club

I

t has been a busy time for Torrington boxers Trai Sheppard and Ned Pettifer. Trai boxed in the Weymouth show on the 29th April, easily beating his opponent from Broadplain Bristol by a unanimous points decision. Dan Barrett, back home from Cardiff University, used the opportunity to box for Torrington, but lost to a strong opponent from Golden Ring in Southampton. Trai used smart combinations, and his quick hand speed to gain control of the bout in the early stages. Trai and Ned, along with other Boxing Club members, ran in the Torrington AAC Round the Tree race on Friday 5th May. Then on Saturday 6th Ned boxed in the Devonport show, narrowly losing out on a split decision. Members of the boxing club got thoroughly stuck into the annual ‘Round the Tree’ race and we had 23 of our members taking part this year! Our men’s team won first place, and Dom Gordon came second overall! It’s a tough race, so well done to everyone who took part. Same again next year! Junior BoxFit is in its third week and runs on Saturday mornings with 6 to 10 year olds with themes of fitness, respect, dignity, discipline and fun! Wayne has an idea for our annual fundraiser for Children’s Hospice SW. Last year it was Mill St, what this time? Thanks once again to everyone who supports us, our coaches, our committee and our members, we’re so proud of you all. Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin

Dartington Crystal Celebrates Fifty Years

T

he company was founded by the Dartington Hall Trust, a charity which aimed to assist the economic regeneration of rural areas through business, education, the arts and country crafts. The Trust was originally set up in the 1920s by Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst at Dartington Hall, South Devon. In the early 1960s the Trust had become concerned that North Devon was becoming depopulated, as a lack of job opportunities forced people to move elsewhere to find work. The glassmaking factory was intended to be a solution to this problem, conceived as a centre of employment giving local people a reason to stay in the area. To achieve this vision, the Trust recruited Eskil Vilhelmsson, a Swedish glass manufacturer, to be the company’s Managing Director. A team of Scandinavian glass blowers came with him to Torrington and the factory opened in June 1967 under the name of Dartington Glass. To start with, there were just 35 employees. Homes were built for the Swedish glass blowers near the factory (Eskil Place) as well as at the eastern end of town (Dartington Fields). The Swedes were gradually accepted into the community and the first marriage between one of them and a local girl took place in 1972. Fourteen more were to follow over the next 10 years. Dartington would not have survived without the talent and commitment of the original Swedish glass blowers. The factory developed under the guidance of Eskil Vilhelmsson and the Design Director, Frank Thrower, who created some of the most important glassware designs of the 20th century, such as Sharon, Exmoor and Dimple. He also devised a clever advertising plan that helped establish Dartington Glass on the industry scene and caught the attention of their first customers: the renowned John Lewis Partnership and an interesting new shop called Habitat. The company thrived from here, growing into a worldwide brand recognised for its quality and design-led manufacturing. By 1970 the Dartington workforce

numbered 84, with manufacturing and distribution centred on two large sites in Torrington, and the company had made its first steps into the lucrative tourist market. 5,000 visitors passed through the factory in the first week it opened to the public. During the 1970s, 2-3,000 pieces of glass were made every day with 75% of Dartington’s production

the area. Dartington products have been exhibited around the world, and over the years the company has received numerous design and industry awards. It now creates a variety of unique commissions for high profile clients. Dartington Crystal has played an important role in regenerating the regional economy of North Devon. It has had a chequered history; going from success, through the doldrums, to today’s position as a leading tourism draw as the only remaining crystal factory in the UK, welcoming 300,000 visitors every year to its popular visitor centre, factory tour and large shopping area. It supports 140 jobs and remains a major employer in Torrington. Moira Brewer

sold domestically. The glass was also exported to some 30 nations; primarily Australia, Canada and the United States – including Sweden. Demand outstripped production and the factory had to be expanded and the workforce grew to 330 for a time. By the 1980s the modern image of Dartington had attracted the attention of Wedgwood, who took up a large stake in the business, allowing for further expansion. Business continued to boom in the late 1980s and early 1990s until it was affected by the recession, and in 1992 the factory had to put its 250 staff on short-time, working two weeks out of three. There was a management buy-out in 1994 and the Dartington Hall Trust sold its remaining stake in the business. By the end of the 1990s manufacturing had declined from 20 glass kilns to three, with much of its stock imported under the Dartington name. In 2004 it was taken over by US giftware giant, Enesco, following the company briefly going into administration. By now known as ‘Dartington Crystal’, it underwent another management buy-out in April 2006 safeguarding many skilled jobs in

Fleur’s Gardening Forum Creating a Herb Garden

H

erbs are incredibly versatile plants, and can be grown almost anywhere, including the herbaceous border, raised beds, pots and hanging baskets and, what’s more, they are reasonably easy to grow and propagate. So, from a windowsill to a balcony, a tiny patio to the open border you can create a great culinary, aromatic and colourful feature! They are also very attractive to pollinating insects of all kinds. Herbs grow best in a sunny, welldrained position which should be sheltered from really harsh winds, but don’t worry if your garden doesn’t live up to that description – I grew herbs in a previous garden which was north-facing, shady except in high summer, but it was fairly sheltered. What herbs really dislike is being waterlogged during winter. Creating a flowerbed for herbs is the same as for all such beds: remove weeds, incorporate a general fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone, and add some sharp grit/gravel if your soil is clayey. Herbs don’t need too much mollycoddling, many grow in inhospitable places in the wild and are very hardy. If you are growing herbs in containers, a good general compost is best (John Innes No. 3) or you can mix multipurpose compost with John Innes to add some ‘bulk/substance’ to the soil. Mix in some slow release fertiliser as well. Most herbs can be grown from seed, but for a small display, it is probably easier to purchase plants from local

20

nurseries or markets. Rosemary is a fragrant shrub with blue flowers (some are white or pink) and ‘Miss Jekyll’s Upright’ is a good specimen for a hedge. There is also a prostrate form which can be grown in a hanging basket. Fennel, particularly bronze fennel, is a very hardy perennial which dies down in winter, having attractive ferny foliage that smells of aniseed and can reach a height of five feet or so. Sage also comes in various hues of foliage, but the variegated varieties may not be as hardy as Salvia officinalis, which also has lovely blue flowers throughout summer. The thyme genus has many varieties and Thymus vulgaris can be grown as a dwarf hedge, but will need trimming otherwise it becomes leggy. Other thymes are ground huggers, some have variegated foliage and flowers come in shades of red to light pink/mauve. Oregano/Marjoram are almost the same plant and provide excellent ground cover. The golden oregano is a very attractive foil to plainer green herbs. Bay can grow into a large tree if not kept trimmed. You can buy readyshaped specimens but these are usually expensive. Being evergreen, bay does make an excellent feature plant for a herb border. Mint and Balm should only ever be grown in large pots because of their highly invasive habit! With mint, you can create a vast collection of various

‘flavours’ and textures, from the traditional peppermint and spearmint, to grapefruit, pineapple and even lavender mint. There are, of course, many other herbs, some annual or biennial but I have room only to mention a few .

A Poem for May Fair

‘Twas the night before May Fair, the entourage sleep, For tomorrow they have a tradition to keep. The anticipation, that ‘butterflies’ feeling Their top secret outfits they have been concealing. A day for the town, all coming together And everyone hopes and prays for good weather! Weeks and weeks of hard work to prepare Then suddenly, somehow, it’s here - it’s May Fair. The Square fills with song as the infants all sing Then the Circassian Circle for the country dancing. All wonderfully poised, the children dance proud As family and friends spectate from the crowd. The people watch on with a glint in their eye So many fond memories of May Fairs gone by. A Gran taken back to her time as May Queen And a Grandad remembers the Herald he’d been. A town steeped in history, the music won’t stop The Floral Dance starts and it’s one, two, three, hop. The rumbling of steps as their feet hit the ground A familiar tune plays as dancers go round. With all in good spirits, the atmosphere high The dignitaries slowly begin walking by. The silver band play as they take their position Just one more key part of this May Fair tradition. The music plays on and crowds lean from their chair As the entourage gradually enter the Square. Attendants and Heralds, Crowner, May Queen All beautifully dressed, revealing the theme. A gentle applause as they walk with great care Their sights set upon that one special chair. The procession goes on and they all take their place The May Queen is crowned by the Crowner with grace. A moment to treasure, staying with them forever A memory stored to look back on whenever. When May Queen is Grandma, stood back looking on She’ll remember her time when she sat on the throne. The ribbons are ready, the children hold tight As they wrap all the colours round the may pole so white. The patterns emerge as they weave in and out A spider’s web spun as they dance round about. Skipping and dancing, a day full of glee As Torrington says, “Us be plaised to zee ee!” Sarah Pester

Common News

I

was very pleased to be invited to attend the May Fair proceedings again this year and would like to thank the May Fair Committee and congratulate them on another magnificent day. Much as we would like to take the credit for providing the fine weather, it was really out of our hands! Thank you to all those who completed our public consultation survey which was attached to our special Commons in Spring supplement in the April Crier and online. We received over 180 responses and the overall view was very positive about how we manage the Commons, and our plans for the future. We will publish the results in more detail soon. It makes very interesting reading! The Commons in Spring supplement focused on things to see as everything wakes up after the winter. What an abundant spring it turned out to be! Few of us can remember so much blossom and fantastic swathes of sunny gorse flowers (the inspiration for the yellow streak on our new logo). Areas where we have cut back invasive scrub, bracken and trees, have burst into colour as wild flowers start to reclaim the grassland. It is also one of those years when certain species of animal life seem to have a population boom. Where the long dry spell has reduced the marsh habitat near Commons Lake Path, we found millions of tadpoles struggling to survive in the limited volume of water, clumping together in almost solid masses and unlikely to survive another day. Conservators and friends went into action with Operation Bucket to scoop up as many tadpoles as possible and carry them to safety in Commons Lake before dusk. We relayed dozens of buckets of writhing tadpoles. Exhausting work, but we hope it will ensure the frog population remains in good shape! As we have said before – if you would like to get involved and be a Friend of the Commons, contact us at clerk. conservators@gmail.com or 01805 462463. Enjoy your summer! Cadets Take It to the Next Level

ongratulations to the following Cadets who were promoted this month became Cadet NCO’s. Cadets promoted from Cadet to Cadet Lance Corporal: Jai Head, Jessica Ley, Holly Rice-Smith, Tyler Bolt, Cadet Eve Bridger was also promoted to the rank of Cadet Corporal. All presentations were made by the Mayor of Great Torrington, Councillor Mrs Margaret Brown. In order to be promoted, Cadets must demonstrate that they have shown and continue to uphold the values and standards of the Army Cadet Force (ACF). The ACF promotes personal and social development in all its members, with opportunities to gain useful team skills, leadership experience and worthwhile certification.

RCAC Canada Exchange Results 2017

As part of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet (RCAC)/UK Army Cadets annual exchange programme, three parties of UK Army Cadets are invited to attend as students on one of three, six week RCAC courses during which all UK Cadets are fully integrated within the RCAC Sections. This long running exchange was established in 1972, and is the main way in which Army Cadets contribute to International Defence Engagement between the UK and Canada. After attending a national selection weekend Cpl Trinity Hickford from Great Torrington Detachment was selected to undertake the White Horse programme. She will be undertaking a variety of different activities which include a two day watermanship training package, marksmanship training and live firing with the C7 and an 18-day expedition consisting of a three day hike, five days mountain biking and five days of canoeing. I am also delighted to inform you that Cadet Staff Sergeant Freddie Webber from Great Torrington Detachment was successful on the national selection weekend, and has been awarded a place on the Cadet Leadership and Challenge Course at Rocky Mountain. He will undertake a variety of different activities which include wilderness first aid, outdoor leadership, and adventure activities such as biking, kayaking, horseback riding or mountaineering. Lt. Sanders, Great Torrington Detachment Commander, has been selected as one of the escort officers for the Rocky Mountain Exchange. He will be acommpanying 12 senior cadets from across the UK to undertake a variety of different activities which include wilderness first aid, outdoor leadership, and adventure activities. Lt Sanders said, “This is a momentous achievement for both the Detachment and the individuals themselves. It’s fantastic that Cadets from Great Torrington have been selected for this once in a lifetime opportunity”. I am delighted for both of them and I’m sure they will have a fantastic time”. Great Torrington Army Cadet Force meets every Friday evening 7- 9:30pm at the Detachment Hut, which is located on the grounds of Great Torrington School. Young people aged between 12-18 years of age are more than welcome. For further information on what the Army Cadet Force can offer you please feel free to contact Lieutenant Matthew Sanders: email: matt.sanders@armymail.mod.uk; 07463 818 187.

K9 Focus Needs Your Help!

M

iss Jessica here. I’m happy to say Jaime has been on a diet and has lost his Easter weight, he’s enjoying his newly found muscles and spends hours chasing balls, so he’s now ready for a home and tells me that he’s looking for a partner to train him to do agility. Diesel has been made a celebrity as he’s recently been named, by the Gazette, the saddest dog in Devon! After spending half his life in a kennel, Diesel is still looking for a family that will show him life away from all his doggy neighbours, with lots of toys to chase and water to splash in. Bera is much happier now because her ears are no longer sore; Aunty Lynne says she is getting ready for the hot summer and has been in a huge moult, with her beautiful winter coat covering everything. I’ve shared some of my toys with her because she loves to play, and would love some more if anyone could donate. A new dog is joining us, his name is Prince, he’s just being picked up from the pound in Worcester but he’s very emaciated, mum says he’ll soon be better though, and I can see he’s going to be a very charming golden lurcher when he’s eaten more and is ready to be adopted. The Seaside Festival has planned a dog show with K9 Focus on Saturday 3rd June in Westward Ho! park from 2-4pm;

‘

Everything comes to those who wait’ is most peoples’ favourite adage so a slight delay in the delivery of our new diesel loco, which was eagerly expected in last month’s Crier, has only increased our anticipation. We are putting together the final arrangements for transportation from Chasewater Railway in Staffordshire, which takes a little while given that it weighs 28 tons. The restoration team have their spanners polished waiting and ready for work! The extra few days has given us the opportunity to fine tune our plans for delivery on site. The start of the spring and summer season has seen a large number of visitors to the Tarka Trail, the Puffing Billy and our railway. We are aiming to open every weekend and Bank Holiday and, so far, the signs are good as the sales team have been kept busy. The coal dock team have finished work on the retaining wall for the raised bed, and planting has been completed. We are planning to add flower tubs to the front of the dock to further improve the area. New plants were put into the

platform gardens, the flower beds were tidied up, grass mown alongside the trail and the benches at the north end of the platform are to be sanded down and revarnished. The Easter weekend proved most successful, as the carriage was open for four days, making almost £400 in sales which gave the volunteers on duty an opportunity to inform visitors of our plans. There have been many positive comments and good wishes for our railway. Our efforts are clearly appreciated. Our first open weekend is rapidly approaching, so make a note in your diaries for Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th of June when we will be setting out our stalls in the completed gazebo at the Puffing Billy. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue will be in attendance on Saturday dispensing free advice. As always news updates can be found on our website and Facebook page and please pop in and see us in the carriage on Thursday or at weekends. Rob Martin, Tarka Valley Railway

everyone can show off their beautiful summer coats and teamwork with their mums and dads; K9 Focus will be there from 1pm with a stall selling pet treats and giving information about their case. There will also be a dog activity weekend at Stowford with lots of different activities to do over two days, visit their website for more information: www.stowford.co.uk The K9 Focus charity shop is looking for volunteers to look after the shop, sell dog treats and sort through clothes;

Aunty Lynne also says someone who can put donated items up for sale on Ebay would be really helpful. K9 Focus is also looking for volunteers to help with collection days; any amount of time you can offer is always appreciated. Well there’s been a lot to update you all about, but I think that’s everything, so wishing you have an amazing month, Miss Jessica. Written by Faye Bartlett, age 15, from Great Torrington School

Team News - Promoted!

H

aving finished the Devon Division 1 League season sitting in 2nd place, we were supposed to go into a play-off game against Newquay, however, they declined to even go for promotion, so Torrington RFC have secured promotion for the 2nd year running - congratulations to all concerned. I look forward to a fascinating season next year, with some different opposition and places to visit. Our 2nd XV have also enjoyed a good season, as commented upon last month, with the extra benefit of having proved worthy of entering the Devon Merit Table 2. Well done to all concerned for making this happen. Youth Section: Rugby in Torrington continues to grow, not only for the seniors at the club, but now the juniors too! This season has seen both U13’s and a mix of U10/11’s play competitive fixtures at Donnacroft, and away from home, against local sides Ilfracombe, Bideford and South Molton. There has also seen the development of U7 and 8’s. This age group will continue to train on a Friday evening, 5.30-6.30pm (at the Rugby Club) until the end of the school term. We would love to hear from anyone interested in coaching rugby to children, to help increase the amount of teams we have. For more information, please contact Youth Chairman, Adrian Avery on 07780 665 378. Registration for next season will take place on Sunday 3rd September. AGM Friday 30th June, 8pm at the Clubhouse: It is that time of year again,

where we evaluate the season just gone and look forward to the next one; please do come along and have your say. There are due to be a few changes this year, with a few committee members moving on, allowing for new blood and some fresh ideas to continue taking this club forwards. Personally, I have completed three fantastic years as Chairman, but feel now is the time to stand down and allow someone new, with fresh ideas, to take the club forward. Mark Keeley, Club Secretary, has recently been voted in as our local Cavaliers’ Chairman, and quite rightly feels he needs to concentrate on that job for the time being. John Hutchings, Club Treasurer, has decided, or at least Jasmine has decided, the time is right to start a family; firstly, congratulations are in order and we wish you all well in the coming months, but unfortunately this means we will also be losing Johns services. If you are interested in any of these positions, or can think of anyone who would like to be involved, please contact me on the details below. Dates for the diary: TRFC Awards Evening, Saturday 3rd June. We have decided to amend our usual end of season bash this year and will be holding it at Donnacroft, in our clubhouse and an adjacent marquee, please see social media for further details. Playing at Buckland Brewer Under Fives

W

henever I tell people that I work in Early Years, the first thing they say is ‘but that’s not a real job, all you do is play’. Umm...yes we do play all day. From the moment the children arrive at school, the door to the outside area is opened and we play all day, only stopping for a story and lunch. Play allows the child to lead their own learning, with activities of their choosing. But in order for the children to make sense of their play, the staff have to have the skills and knowledge to know when to interact and progress the child’s self-learning, and when their interaction will just become interfering. When children play, they work within their own Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which means that the child’s play can only take them so far. In order for the child’s zone to grow, an adult needs to scaffold the child’s play and add an enhancement. An example would be – a child rolling cars down a tube, watching them roll out the other end. A teacher would watch and then after a little while enhance the child’s own learning by ‘wondering’ if they could work out which car went the furthest. Now the teacher could just get out the chalk and say ‘mark on the floor where each car stops’ but the child needs to solve the problem themselves. The adult will ask open questions, allowing the child to have a go at their strategy, thus allowing sustained shared thinking between adult and child, and learning through critical thinking for the child. So the next time someone says that they work in Early Years and your first thoughts are ‘oh just hand prints and play’, just remember that the staff are watching the children at all times, working out when or if to get involved and what the next logical step will be for the child. A quote I love the most is by Elaine Bennett – ‘So you pull me from my play, my all-consuming play. To learn maths with you at a table with brightly coloured bits of plastic. Whilst I sit there learning with you, all I can think about is getting back to my play… my all-consuming play where I was measuring, using shapes, making patterns, counting, solving problems and THINKING – until I got pulled away to learn maths with you. See you next month Andrea views. A garden of wit, humour, unusual ideas and surprises - including a volcano. Also water features, shrubs, foliage area, grasses in an unusual setting, fernery, bonsai and a polytunnel. Saturday 24th June, Sunday 25th June (11am 6pm). Admission £3.50, children free. Light lunches, home-made cakes and cream teas, or perhaps a glass of wine.

The Rolle Canal Society’s June Walk

A

fter visiting the Inclined Plane boat lift near the estuary end of the Rolle Canal last month, the June walk will be on Sunday 18th, starting at 2:30pm from the Puffing Billy, Torrington’s old railway station. From the ancient Rothern Bridge where the pack horse trails from Bideford and Hartland Abbey once combined to cross the Torridge, our route follows the Tarka Trail north to Beam Weir and on to the famous aqueduct, with views to the suggested sites of the birthplace of Tarka the Otter. This part of the walk is very suitable for anyone using an electric buggy. For all those able to climb a flight of steps, there is now the chance to explore the site of the canal basin behind Beam House, and learn how a Roving Bridge enabled both barge horses and stately carriages to cross the canal back in the nineteenth century. So long as it’s not too wet, the recently improved (but still rough – a walking stick is useful) canal towpath can then be followed around the base of Furzebeam Hill on to Torrington Commons, before rejoining the Tarka Trail not far from the start. The walks are organised by the Rolle Canal & Northern Devon Waterways Society, who appreciate a contribution of £2 towards their voluntary work on the upkeep of the canal heritage. Everyone is welcome to join in – just turn up at the start for your free copy of the new information leaflet, or if you need further details of the walk, email: hassallc@ ymail.com. Botanics, Bees and Bottle Tops: Arts Week at Bluecoat Primary

I

t was an arty end to the spring term for pupils at Bluecoat C of E Primary School, as Arts Week took centre stage with workshops, activities and competitions. A jam packed schedule saw children enjoying drama and dance sessions led by Wolf + Water Arts Company, as part of their “Reverend on the River” Lottery funded project. The community-wide project looks at the legacy of the 1930’s and 40’s vicar of Torrington, the Reverend Keble Martin, who used the local Commons and surrounding countryside as the inspiration for his internationally famous botanical illustrations. In the workshops pupils got the chance, through drama, to think about being an explorer and the notion that there are many exciting and inspiring things to discover just on our doorstep, if time is taken to look hard enough. While in the dance, pupils enjoyed turning the life cycle of wild flowers and the bees, and other pollinators they rely on, into movement. Daily competitions were open to the whole school, based on the theme ‘Journeys through Space and Time’. Pupils were invited to submit entries in cake decorating, sewing, art through recycling, photography and sketch work. First, second and third prize winners were selected in four different age categories. Visual arts also played a major role in Arts Week, with the construction of a bottle top mural led by Cathy Karniewicz (Mrs Recycle) from Torridge District Council. Since January, teachers, pupils and friends of the school have been collecting an array of colourful plastic bottle tops following a design competition to enhance the recycling area at the main entrance of the school. The designs came from each year group, including ideas for the sun, mini beasts, butterflies, bees, birds and flowers. The central theme of “the tree of life” was designed by Cody Gardiner , and Tom Loud’s design discovered that Bluecoat School has ECO in its name! Children enjoyed being hands on using tools to fix the bottle tops to the backing boards kindly donated by SWH Group. As the week progressed the boards were transformed into a beautiful mural which was proudly unveiled on the last day of term and now greets visitors to the school with a ray of sunshine!

A poem from Joanna. Your Chair In his English lesson, Charley was asked to present the techniques for writing to argue in a form that would help him remember it. We think this is inspired. Writing to Argue: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Alliteration: Short sheep live on the massive mountains. Facts and statistics: There are more than 1 billion sheep in the world. Rhetorical question: Do sheep have feelings? Emotive language: The black sheep of the family. Shock tactics: Sheep are stupid. Rule of 3: The sheep was short, fat and woolly. Simile: The sheep grew like a plant in a pot. Modal verbs: Could the sheep be hungry? Repetition: Sheep, sheep and more sheep. The imperative: Shear the sheep. Counter argument: Although sheep are stupid, they can be clever sometimes. Ambitious vocabulary: Sheep grow long wool, furthermore it makes good jumpers. Sophisticated punctuation (single word sentence): Sheep. Charley Dack, Year 10

Dad swung the door open And presented me to you. A tear rolled down your wrinkled face. “She reminds me of Dorothy,” You said, Sitting in your chair. All curled up in front of the fire, All toasty and warm, Tree lights lighting up one corner Of a dimly lit room. You let out happy tears As you sat there in your chair. First day of school today, I rushed down the stairs Fearing I would be late. I could tell you were upset. You were remembering them As you sat there in your chair. Round after round after round; That’s what killed him. The agony is in your eyes. I can feel your pain. “He is gone but never forgotten.” You said in your chair. Now old enough to understand, You tell me the full story, “He was killed in action. Body not found. Lost at sea.” You said, stuttering in your chair. Walking up slowly, You then stop and see her name. You trace it slowly. Head in circles. “I want to go home.” I knew you wanted to sit in your chair.

Opposite page: Every year, the GTS school Governors set an essay writing competition for our students. This year the subject was Brexit and its possible impact on British education. Here is Sadie’s winning entry. You get up slowly to make your way To your death bed, Unaware of what is about to happen next… I come in and run to you, But I was too late. I was crying in your chair. And here I am now. An event I thought I would not attend so soon. Obviously God did not want you to suffer. Nana passed me your will; That’s when I found out That you had given me your chair. Now I wear my poppy with pride. I still feel weird. I lay the seeds down, About to flower. Sit in my gift from you… Your old friend… Your chair. Joanna Grigg, Year 10

Ten Tors Success for Local Schools!

Shebbear College Ten Tors Success

A Fantastic Ten Tors for Chulmleigh Community College!

T

he eight months of hard work and training in the rain, fog and mud have paid off for Chulmleigh Community College’s Ten Tors teams. The College’s three Ten Tors teams completed the challenge without a single team member dropping out along the way, which is in itself an excellent achievement. Getting around the whole route involves a huge amount of stamina (mental as much as physical), along with courage, determination, teamwork, navigation skills, a sound knowledge of the moor, and an ability to carry on through ever increasing pain. Not only did all three College teams complete the challenge as full teams of six, but all three did it in incredible time. The first 35 mile team was, astonishingly, back in time for breakfast (crossing the finish line just after 9.30am), the 45 mile team beat the College’s previous 35 mile record and crossed the finish line at 10.58am, and the last 35 mile team were back by 12.30pm, despite one of the team members carrying an injury from halfway through the first day, and having to spend over an hour and a half in a first aid tent along the way. To put Chulmleigh’s performance in context, and compare it against the other teams on their respective routes, their results were: 45 mile team - 3rd fastest on their route 35 mile team A - 3rd fastest on their route 35 mile team B - 5th fastest on their route Mr Wade, Team Manager at Chulmleigh, said “we knew they were good, but this is absolutely brilliant; we’re not aware of any organisation that has achieved such consistently high results across all of their teams.” Chulmleigh Community College, which recently registered as Duke of Edinburgh’s Award centre, also had around a dozen students completing the Ten Tors Challenge in various scout groups.

ast Friday morning, four teams from Shebbear College headed down to the army camp at Okehampton ready for the annual Ten Tors Challenge. In its 57th year, this event is unlike any other, the largest and most challenging event held nationally for young people between the ages of 14 to 19 years. The teams, depending on age, face hikes of 35, 45 or 55 miles (56, 72 or 88km) over the rough terrain of Dartmoor, visiting ten nominated tors and check points in under two days. Taking part is no mean feat! At 7am the guns sounded and within five minutes, all 2,400 young people had disappeared, some running, most walking but all about to start the biggest challenge of their lifetime, 24 hours of walking through the wilderness of Dartmoor National Park. Three of Shebbear’s teams faired very well and completed their challenge in good times. Their 35 mile team came across the finish line at 12.49pm, followed 10 minutes later by the 45 mile team. The 55 mile team came in at 2.39pm. The Plymouth and Cornwall ATC 55 mile team included one Shebbear College lower sixth form student and they came in at 4.43pm. Unfortunately one of Shebbear’s 35 mile teams dropped out due to complications, but everyone was safe and sound. Well done to everyone who took part, it was an excellent effort, one to be proud of.
