Devon Community Hospitals Action Group Formed

T

he Devon Community Hospitals Action Group was launched at a packed meeting on Saturday 11th April at the St Boniface Centre in Crediton. This amalgamation of community hospital campaigns across Devon was formed following an initial meeting in Torrington in early March. A mission statement was also agreed: 1. To keep the beds and services open in community hospitals in Devon 2. That the group will act as a single entity presenting a united front to the public 3. Contentious issues to be voted upon The aim of the group, agreed unanimously, is to: Actively campaign for the return of the beds and services which have been removed from community hospitals throughout the county. The overwhelming feeling of the meeting, from the many contributions, was that action is needed to persuade the Clinical Commissioning Group and the senior management of the National Health Service, that the removal of beds in community hospitals in Devon, and the setting up of a failed underfunded system of ‘Care Closer to Home’, has proved to be disastrous, with ‘bed blocking’ in Devon district hospitals leading to the highest emergency alerts. Public support will be sought via media, including social media. There will be a lobby of the Devon County Council Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday 18th June from 10am. Dave Clinch, DCHAG

STITCH Update Dear friends We thought you might like an overview of the progress made so far in the fight for justice since the illegal closure of our Community Hospital beds in July 2013. 1. The threat of a judicial review made the Trust open the beds for an eight week period and reconsider their illegal action 2. Marches and town meetings took place with huge support locally 3. Both the Town Council and the District Council put motions forward to the Trust, that a full and honest consultation should take place. 4. A petition signed by 2000 people was delivered to the ivory tower home of the North Devon Healthcare Trust. 5. The Parish Poll result was a 99% call for the beds to be re-opened 6. An independent evaluator proved that the six month Care Closer to Home trial was flawed. 7. The STITCH Report and evaluation documents were sent to Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England - and to date we have received no response. 8. We have instigated the formation of the Devon Community Hospitals Action Group, known as DevonCHAG, which brings together communities across the county that are facing closure of their hospitals or reduction in medical services. This united front will give us a more powerful voice and larger platform to continue the fight. 9. We continue to challenge at every opportunity, the proposals and decisions being made by the Devon Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS Trust 10. To date we have received 17 patient stories proving that Care Closer to Home has failed - these have been submitted to the Trust, County and Government. 11. We have lobbied all County Councillors and DevonCHAG will be attending the Devon Council Scrutiny Committee meeting at County Hall in June, to call in the decision to refer the matter to the Secretary of State 12. For more information, visit our website www.stitch.org.uk. You might also like to see our video on www.youtube.com. - just type Torrington Stitch in search box. The Torrington campaign is as strong as ever and we are determined to get our Community beds reinstated and ensure our hospital remains open with a full range of medical services In closing, I hope you all had a wonderful May Fair - we were blessed with good weather and a great day was followed by a fun-filled Carnival on Saturday. Nobody does it like Torrington! Have a good Summer Best wishes Margaret Brown, Chair STITCH

Commons Memorial Seats Charles Henry Martin…

I

n the April edition of the Crier, was a short item asking for any information relating to the memorial seats on the Commons. From the responses received, we had one of unusual interest from Arthur Martin of Locksbeam Farm, relating to his brother. If you walk to Rice Point, taking the path across the golf course, or wander up there through Furzebeam Wood, you will come across a memorial seat dedicated to Charles Henry Martin, which bears this most singular inscription, “when dreams take flight follow them”. But then, Mr Martin was a singular man and he quite literally did what it said on the plaque. Born at Locksbeam Farm in 1929, Charles had a lifelong interest in aerospace and worked in the industry for 45 years. After qualifying in aircraft design at De Havilland, he was employed in their design office. He was also a member of the team who created the Blue Streak rocket in 1958. He went on to become Assistant Chief Engineer at British Aerospace and was invited to become a Fellow of both the Interplanetary Society and the Royal Aeronautical Society. He died in 2002. His seat, placed on Rice Point by his family, ensures that one local boy could get no nearer to the heavens in his home town. Has anyone else an interesting story to tell about a seat? If so please contact 01805 622688. Torrington Commons’ Conservators

Torrington Silver Band Easter Weekend Twinning Trip

T

orrington Silver Band have just returned from a very enjoyable Easter Weekend break to our twin town of Roscoff in France. We were invited to attend by The Twinning Association, as they were celebrating 40 years of their twinning links with Roscoff. Some band members last went to Roscoff 30 years ago. About 20 players and their families set off early on Friday morning for the crossing from Plymouth to France. While we were there, we performed three outdoor concerts and drew large crowds at all of them. It was worth the months of preparation practising a selection of French tunes, as well as some of our most popular English ones. There was even a rendition of The Floral Dance, complete with some band members, twinners and audience dancing. All great fun. On Saturday we were provided with a buffet lunch by Roscoff Town Council, and a few of our members attended a dinner and dance with the twinners on the evening. Through The Crier, we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to The Twinning Association and The Torrington Cavaliers for their donations which enabled us to go on this trip. Thank you also to the public, who donated money at Christmas when we were playing carols in the square, and also those who attended our recent concerts. The money raised also helped to fund this trip. Lastly I would like to say thank you to some of our family members, who do not play in the band, but always turn out to help us by collecting money and helping out at our events. We could not continue without them. Gayle Craker, Torrington Silver Band Press Officer

Little Torrington Panto

U

nlike many other villages in the area Little Torrington has never had an annual panto. Well, not in living memory anyway. That all changed this year in early February, when the newly formed Little Torrington players performed ‘Scrooge’. Quite a motley crew assembled, which included a vicar (Sussanah Metz) in the leading role as Ebenezer Scrooge, a farmer (David Daniel) as the ghost of Jacob Marley and a few other well-known local people playing other parts. Directed (and bullied!) by Bob Harrod, who also wrote this alternative version of an otherwise wellknown story, they managed to get it together on the night and played for two evenings to a packed village hall, raising over £1,000 for the hall funds. Plans are already well advanced to repeat our initial success, on the evenings of 29th and 30th of January 2016 which, although sounding a long way away, will be upon us in no time. This time we will be performing Cinderella like you have never seen it performed before! Without giving too much away, you may be surprised to hear that a gorilla is involved! Watch this space! Bob Harrod

Dolly Hardon & The Big Lottery, these are two of the big events that have happened recently for Taddiport Village Hall!

O

n March 21st Dolly Hardon & The Wild Strawberries headlined an exciting and exclusive fundraising event which raised £655 for the hall. We would like to express our thanks to The Torridge Inn, Maya and Ware’s Butchers for donating vouchers for our raffle; Landspeeder who kindly acted as support band and everyone who bought tickets, supporting the event and making it a fun evening. Our second piece of good news is that after five months of hopeful anticipation, The Big Lottery Fund have granted us £9897 funding to replace our dilapidated boiler. The work for this can now go ahead and preparations are to start on April 27th. Many thanks to our regular hall users who have stuck by us even in the chilly weather!! We will be running our Duck Race again this year on Saturday 18th July at Taddiport Bridge 3pm. Make sure you buy your numbered duck from committee members in June/ July to be in with a chance of winning!! The hall is an ideal space for parties and we do have spaces available for weekly club events. For bookings and enquiries please contact Hazel on 01805 625904 or 07944 481 548.

Great Torrington Comprehensive 25 Year School Reunion

Saturday 25th July 2015, 7.30pm Torridge Vale Social Club

D

id you, or your son or daughter, attend GTS starting in the first year in 1985 and leaving in the fifth year of 1990? If so, there is a school reunion in Great Torrington, to celebrate the 25 years since everyone left, or for those who started in 1985, a whole 30 years anniversary. Two school friends, Sarah Dowson and Kimberly Fanson, have made contact with over 70 people from Mrs Copp’s school year and plans have been finalised for the event on Saturday 25th July 2015 at the Torridge Vale Social Club. We hope to bring together as many class mates and teachers from the year as possible, so whether you have married, emigrated, changed career or have children, come along to share your achievements and mingle with old class mates. Invites have been sent via Facebook, but if you would be interested in attending, please contact Sarah at sdowson74@yahoo.co.uk or Kimberly at kimfanson@hotmail.co.uk.

reparations are well ahead for the annual Dowland Country Fair. Every year people from all over the South West join us, last year attracting over 3,000 visitors, which is absolutely incredible, so to show our appreciation we try to put on the very best schedule of exhibits for all the family. * George Mudge will be returning with his sheep shearing demonstrations; the oldfashioned way using hand shears. * North Devon Falconers, with over 60 years’ experience, will be flying Peregrines, Harris Hawks, high bred falcons and owls, all these beautiful birds have the power to capture our attention. * Horse Logging displays using two Shire Horses. * Long netting * Horse and cart rides with the Suffolk Punch * Have a go archery * Frozen-themed tent - meet Queen Elsa and Olaf and sing-a-long with them to all the Frozen movie hits. * Running Deer will be providing workshops and demonstrations in green wood working, bushcraft and camp crafts, along with their shire horse Trelawney. * Star the Duck * Chase the Bunny * Our entertainment stage this year will include, Hatherleigh Silver Band, Cameron Mills, school choirs and more…. * As usual we start the day with lurcher simulated coursing, book in from 9am for 9-30am start. * Lurcher, terrier, family dog and ferret

shows, plus Buckham Fair ‘Best Rescue’ qualifier. * Vintage vehicles, trade stands, barbecue, bar, cream teas and much, much more. Keep checking our website for more information, www.dowlandcountryfair. org.uk, 01805 804347. A great place to spend the day. Cats Protection Neutering for £5

T

he charity Cats Protection is offering to neuter cats for £5 for those on low incomes or benefits, in the postcode districts of EX21, 22, 38 and 39. Neutering offers cats of all ages some solid benefits: • It stops unwanted kittens (one unneutered female cat can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in just five years) • Your cat is less likely to fight, thus reducing the risk of catching life-threatening diseases transmitted by bites and saliva • Neutered cats are less likely to wander and get run over (most cats killed on the road are unneutered toms) • Neutered male cats are less likely to display territorial behaviour such as spraying Cats Protection believes neutering is an essential part of responsible cat ownership and helps neuter 158,000 cats and kittens each year. The charity recommends that cats and kittens are neutered from four months of age. Please call the branch on 07849 417 890 for more details on eligibility and to obtain a voucher.

Guiding Thanks!

As I come to the end of my term of office as District Commissioner for Torrington Girlguides, I would firstly like to thank all the girls who have come through our units and have made it so enjoyable to do activities with them. Guiding is about the girls and their needs, and we are lucky to have such lovely girls in our units who I’m sure could all teach us a thing or two! I would also like to thank the community for all their support over the four and a half years, who have always contributed to requests for fundraising events, especially Dartington Crystal, Rosemoor gardens, the Plough, Jayne Poole Photography, Tanya`s Beauty Salon, Sandfords Bakery and Classy Canine for raffle prizes. Your help has been greatly appreciated. I`m sure our new DC will also be glad of your support, and I wish her well in her new role. Thanks again, Shirley Lee

James Neville

B

eaford Parish Council would like to express their sadness at the recent loss of James Neville. He was a true asset to the village in every way and thoroughly involved himself in every aspect of village life. He produced the Beaford Bugle, our monthly newsletter, for many years; kept the village planters and hanging baskets in bloom; was the village caretaker and played an active part on the village hall committee, to name but a few of the ways in which he contributed throughout the years. He always had a smile and time to chat, and will be sorely missed by everyone in the village. Beaford Parish Council

Tarka Valley Railway Project

W

ork at the station continues apace; with the station end of the coal loading bay having been exposed, it is being left to settle before we point up the cracks and put a surface on the top. We are most grateful to the good folk of ‘Torrington in Bloom’, who are about to plant up the large platform displays for us. By the time you read this, the platform should be much more colourful and welcoming. Also on the platform is our rebuilt platelayers’ trolley, which has been placed on a short length of track so it is more visible to visitors. The old ‘Puffing Billy’ has now reopened, under the name ‘The Puffing Billy Trading Company’, as a licenced café and restaurant. It will be open seven days a week serving good food and drink! Well worth a visit, or two! Most of the original railway memorabilia will eventually be on display, as the new occupiers are keen on supporting the railway. Prior to the re-opening, a team of volunteers repainted the box van body on the garden and started to paint the old Torrington sign, (‘running in board’ in railway parlance), on the end of the platform nearest the main road. This is a temporary move until the board is replaced completely. There is still work to do on the van body, but in the interim the paint job has clearly been appreciated by those who have seen it. Finally, please come and see us at our fundraising event on Bank Holiday, Sunday and Monday, 24th and 25th May. We hope to have a good selection of attractions and displays to entertain our friends and visitors. Visit: tarkavalleyrailway.co.uk Email: tarkavalleyrailway@gmail.com Tel: 07881 905 260

ur three-year term of office officially came to an end with the election of a new board of Conservators on 14th May. In fact there was no need for an election, as there were fewer valid nominations than the fifteen seats. I am pleased to announce that the following were duly elected as Conservators: Alan George Crawley, Stephen Jones, Barry John Cubitt, Lynda McLaughlin, Stephanie Mary Easton, Alan Nicholas Randall, Keith Stuart Funnell, Carol Ann Ryan, Jennifer Amanda Harrison, Clive John Whalley, Angela Joan Hodge . At our first meeting the new Conservators elect a Chairman and Vice-chairman, so next month it is quite possible that this column with be penned by someone else. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank those who have served as Conservators and chose not to stand this time. We are all volunteer trustees of the Commons, and I am grateful to them for giving their time and experience for the improvement of the Commons. In particular, I would like to recognise the efforts of Michael Collingham, Michael Loud and Brian Davies who have each given many years of wisdom and sound stewardship to make the Commons such a great place and natural asset to the town.

Car Boots

Torrington’s famous car boot kicked off on the first Sunday in May – but unfortunately it was something of a damp squib as the weather failed us. Undeterred and weather gods permitting, we will be operating on the Old Bowling Green every Sunday from 8am until the end of September. I wrote last month about the short film made by Devon Wildlife Trust, to highlight our work and the importance of the Commons. Just a reminder to go and see it for yourself online, by going to YouTube and typing ‘Torrington Commons Jewel in the Crown’ into the search bar. Clive Whalley, Chairman

Summer Solstice Music Festival 19th June GTS

T

he Summer Solstice Music Festival is a celebration of the longest day of the year through music. We are putting on this event for our Rock School level 2 certificates. Our brief was to organise a music event from scratch, we immediately decided we wanted to do something during summer. Our festival is being held on two stages: one is outdoors and home to the alternative/rock/indie genres, the other is indoors and is where the EDM genres will be held. Our aim is to have something for everyone, and ensure that everybody enjoys the Summer Solstice Festival. It is being held at Great Torrington School on Friday 19th June from 5-9pm . Tickets cost £1 for under 17s and £2 for adults. All profits go towards restoring our school’s music department. Our performers include: Lily Challice, Izzie Duncan, Alfie Brown, Forque, Matt Smart, Reese Parkhouse and Uptown Folk. We hope to see you there! Emily Grigg, Billy Palmer, Ben Harrison, Jed Simmons and Brady Hooper

Torrington and District Men’s Shed

I

n the Men’s Shed episode one, the Town, Lands and Poor Trustees generously loaned the use of the vacant Puffing Billy pub to The Shed. We built up an active membership of thirteen Shedders, with six to eight members attending sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The Shedders built their own benches; constructed amongst other things - stage scenery for the Torrington Players and built a mud kitchen for a local pre-school group. Given more time, we’re confident that our membership will continue to grow. Our tenancy at the Puffing Billy ended in March, with uncertainty about future premises, but episode two begins on Monday, June 1st when we move into a large, vacant room at Torrington Football Club. We are really grateful to Gary Dymond at the Football Club for the rental of the room, and for supporting this venture. Willing hands will be needed to complete initial decorating and tidying. So, members and prospective members, do make contact and come along on the morning of June 1st. So, Torrington & District Men’s Shed again offers older men the chance to work on practical tasks, in a friendly and social atmosphere, and at the same time serve the local community without competing with businesses. No particular skills are required, but if you can bring a practical skill to the Shed, all the better. Woodworking, wood turning and repairing old tools are among the activities the Shed could take on, but the final choice will always rest with members. So, if you interested in giving the Shed a go, do contact either Harry Cramp 01805 938965, email harryecramp@talktalk.net or David Nainby 01271 379016, email: david.nainby@btinternet.com.

Frozen Comes to Torrington, Followed by Channel 4

L

ast month some very special visitors came to a village outside Torrington. Filmed by Channel 4, one little girl enjoyed a spectacular Frozen-themed birthday party. The event came together with the help of some local businesses, as an entire farm was redecorated to hold this once in a lifetime event. At Little Potheridge, the barns enjoyed a makeover while props were set for the Frozen spectacular. Decorators Devon, owned by Justin Mercer-Phillips, were on hand to paint everything blue and white. The day was organised by a national magazine that operates from North Devon, Sunday Woman wanted to give local children a chance to meet their Disney idols. With Elsa, Anna and life-size Olaf as entertainment, the day, although windy, was a huge success and the little girl Persephone was delighted to be sharing her birthday with friends. The Cake Academy provided a huge three tier cake alongside sweet treats that made up a whole dessert table. Ronseal supplied the bright garden paints that transformed the whole area. Elsa and Anna, with the help of Percy, brought life into the village, singing all the old favourites such as “Let it Go” while covering the farm in real snow!

Sunday Woman magazine reported on the whole day, revealing the inspiration behind such a huge event. Martina Mercer is the reigning title holder of the national award, “Working Mother

K9 Focus News, Minky Abandoned...

I

have had to drag myself in from the garden to write this today, as I have been having such fun playing with my new sister Minky. She had been abandoned and so Aunty Lynne picked her up from the Local Authority pound, as she had served her time and was due to be put to sleep. She looks just like me but she is white, but she wasn’t white then and boy did she smell. Sadly she had been sat in her own mess for many days, and her coat was matted and brown. Classy Canines in Torrington very kindly washed and groomed her, and suddenly this beautiful little girl appeared! It is really sad as we have learnt that she has renal failure, which is probably why she was abandoned, and although the prognosis is not good K9focus have promised to give her the best possible

care for the remainder of her life, and she will be living with me. She has to have special food, which I am not allowed to share as it costs over £100 per month! Still we all think she is worth it and funds raised from our grand ‘Dunk a Duck’ Race, which is being held at our Castle Hill House, Filleigh Show on 30th August, is being dedicated to her. We have 1,000 ducks that will be launched at 2.30pm on the day. Hopefully you will be able to join us, more details about the

of the Year”, she’s also a finalist for the First Women Awards as “Media Person of 2015”, (results to be announced by Clare Balding on June 11th). She founded Sunday Woman and while working as a freelance journalist still writes for the magazine. She explains why it was so important to get this right on the day. “You may remember the news of a very bad Elsa impersonator who ruined one little girl’s dreams, turning up to her party in rags and an ill-fitting wig? We wanted to host a Frozen event that included all the local kids, while giving our readers Frozen party organising tips. Channel 4 heard of our plight and came to film us for a week, as part of a documentary that should air later this year. We all had such a fabulous time and are hoping, next time Sunday Woman hosts an event, more people of Torrington will join us.” You will notice, if you pass, that the farm is still every colour of the rainbow. This has delighted and confused the locals, however everyone who passes now does so with a smile on their face as they remember this special day. As we drift lazily into summer, there are more special events planned by the Sunday Woman team, locally and nationally. Martina Mercer

actual show will be posted on our website later this month (www.k9focus.co.uk). However, you can buy a duck now, simply by emailing lynne@k9focus.co.uk. Cost is £3 per duck, and this can be paid either by PayPal to the above email or you can text your donation to 70070 quoting: QUAK22 £3. Please help us to give Minky a happy time for however long that may be. By the time you read this, we will be getting ready for our third show of the year at Braunton on 14th June commencing at noon. It promises to be good, with 15 fun classes and rosettes to 6th place, plus lots of lovely food and stalls to entertain the whole family – oh and of course a chance to meet me! Hope to see you in June. Woofs and Licks from Miss Jessica and Minky

Pause for Thought

T

his May was a time of celebration for me; first it was thirty years since I became a Christian and ten years since I began writing ‘Pause for Thought’ in the ‘Crier’. Thirty years ago I had no idea what giving my life over to Jesus had in store, and the amazing things that I have experienced. He has led me to be a part of five different church fellowships, being part of a team bringing the love of Jesus to those in prison, as well as quite a number of individual people or situations. When Jesus chose His first disciples they were just ordinary folks with ordinary jobs, they were not much different than most of us, but they were willing to do whatever He asked them to do. When we give our lives to Him we become His disciples, so I would like to throw out a challenge; if you are a disciple what evidence is there? Are you where He wants you to be or doing what He has assigned you to do? To those who have not yet given your lives, even in His time on earth not everyone believed Him and followed, today there are many in Israel that are still waiting for their Messiah to come. I have met many lovely people over the years and often think what fantastic disciples they would be for Jesus if they only knew? Have you ever thought what He may have led you into, what has kept you? Fear of the unknown, what your friends may say, or your parents maybe or you haven’t got the time, and the favourite trap of all, ‘I’m not religious’. Well, it’s not too late, He is only one prayer away, and your reward will be unimaginable blessings. Vernon Andrew 01805 623230

East Poldark

F

ollowing the resounding success of the BBC’s Poldark, I am sure that, at this very moment, Debbie Horsfield is frantically scribbling away by candlelight writing the ‘Poldark Christmas Special’. A lady of her considerable talent will be well able, I’m sure, to fit in an odd two-hour episode without upsetting Winston Graham’s original story too much. I can see it now; Christmas at Nampara with the poor relations on this occasion, the saintly Demelza and the rest of the family having buried the hatchet, except perhaps for brooding Ross (because he always looks at his best when he is brooding in my opinion). Unfortunately during one of the parlour games someone is found to be cheating and because too much strong liquor has been taken, there will be a merry old set-to. In the midst of all this mayhem, the Warleggans come a-calling and during the ensuing turmoil Elizabeth creeps upstairs and ‘Gets Up To No Good’ with snidey little George in his fashionable hat. Enraged by these goings on, Prudie rushes upstairs and kills dastardly George with one stab of her vicious carving knife, having just finished dismembering the leftover turkey. Enter the dragoon guards in their nice red coats to ensure that justice is done. Now I’m sure most of us are familiar one way or another with this version of the Christmas story, so that means we can do without an EastEnders episode over the festive period… thus giving the BBC the opportunity for a repeat – something which they are so fond of – and offering to myself and other ladies of my acquaintance, the alluring prospect of Aidan Turner visiting us twice at Christmas… which we’d much prefer to Santa Claus any day! Name withheld – (for fear I should get trampled upon in the rush!)

he residents at Glen Tor enjoyed a chance to make music; playing hand bells with Pam Rayner and some of the Abbeyfield Friends and volunteers. They also enjoyed the visit of the May Queen and her attendants on the afternoon of the Carnival. A number of them went out to watch the Carnival in the evening. A visit to see the flower arrangements in the church for the flower festival was appreciated by those who went. Our Summer Fete is to be held on Saturday June 13th at Glen Tor, Villa Road, from 2.30pm. There will be stalls, refreshments and some musical entertainment. We will also have a grand draw and tickets are on sale at the house, during weekday working hours from Chenie our housekeeper, before the event or on the day. There is currently a vacant room in the house and if you think that you, or a loved one, would like to be freed from the daily chores of cooking, cleaning and laundry, why not ring Chenie on 01805 623605 for a chat, and perhaps arrange a visit to meet the staff and residents.

f you have lived in Torrington or the surrounding area for any length of time you cannot help but have passed by the train station building, some of you may even remember it as a functioning train station. Well, hopefully many of you will also have noticed a sudden burst of action in and around it over the last few weeks. This is because the Puffing Billy now has new management and a new name, The Puffing Billy Trading Co. We have worked very hard over the last six weeks to update the P.B., and even if we do say so ourselves we think we’ve done quite a good job! The building itself is owed by the Torrington Town Lands and Poors Committee, who have leased it to us to operate, we are a local family all living in or around Torrington. Rolle Canal History Walk June 14th 2015

W

e promised you a monthly walk exploring the history of the Rolle Canal, and now here are the finalised details for June. The start will be at Beam House where PGL, the children’s adventure holiday organisation, have kindly allowed us to use their car park for the occasion. Beam House in the 19th century was one of the residences of Lord Rolle, who commissioned the building of the canal from the navigable Torridge estuary, up the valley to Rowe’s Moor just south of Torrington. At Beam we have the Aqueduct where the canal crossed the Torridge at a high level, and then the canal basin and roving bridge where Lord Rolle’s carriage drive crossed the canal on its way from the house to the town. There is a good length of canal towpath available to walk around the foot of Furzebeam Hill, where the canal is cut into the rock of the hillside some 30 feet above river level, and is now cloaked in woodland where oak, ash and cherry trees have grown up since the canal closed nearly 150 years ago. This length of canal crosses the Tarka Trail only about half a mile north of the old Torrington Station, so any walkers from Torrington who chose to walk along the Trail to reach the start point at Beam House, can continue home from here while the others follow the Trail back to the start. By road, Beam House is clearly signed PGL on the right of the main road about three miles towards Bideford. Start time is 2:30pm, date Sunday June 14th, distance about two miles, time up to two and a half hours. There is a little rough ground and some steep steps, so wear suitable shoes or boots, particularly if there’s been recent rain. A donation of £2 towards the Rolle Canal Society’s costs in interpretation work on the canal will be appreciated. Dogs cannot be permitted on this walk, as part is on a children’s play area, and some narrow paths can be hazardous. If any further information is required, phone Chris on 01237 425357 or preferably email hassallc@ymail.com.

Fundraising at Hatchmoor Nursing Home

H

atchmoor Nursing Home’s charity of the year for 2015 is the Childrens Hospice South West. This charity was chosen by our residents, so all money raised this year will go to CHSW. The Easter chocolate draw raised £140.36, a great start to the fundraising. Our residents enjoyed a talk from staff from CHSW last month, on the great work they do at the hospice. Our next fundraising event will be our annual Summer Fayre, which will take place on Saturday 1st August 2-4pm. Everyone is welcome. Mel Ryan, (Head of Social Care Department)

Great Torrington and District Care Forum Chairperson Required

G

reat Torrington and District Care Forum is a network for all those working voluntarily and professionally in health, welfare, caring and religious areas in the Torrington area. Over thirty local caring groups belong to the Forum. The Forum meets monthly for a working lunch, usually on the second Wednesday at the Bluecoat Children’s Centre in Torrington. Members can meet informally over lunch on a one-to-one basis, and afterwards in an open forum for an hour, when they exchange information, concerns, future ideas or plans and news and view. The Forum also welcomes guest speakers from caring groups. When necessary, the Forum also acts as a pressure group to support a wide range of improvement initiatives in Torrington and the surrounding district. The Care Forum is looking for a new Chairperson from July 2015. The commitment is for eleven monthly lunch hour meetings per year. The role is well supported by a Secretary and Treasurer along with an informal committee. The Chairperson will have the opportunity to: ◊ Meet and work with a wide range of committed volunteers and professionals ◊ Make a significant contribution to the life of the Torrington and district community To find out more – but without commitment, please contact Judith Nock (Secretary), email: Judithnock@ btinternet.com or phone: 01237 425321

through his cuts, before finally the shell he had become fell away, and there was nothing of him left. He knew how cold he had become, but he simply didn’t care. Recent months had seen him carve a path of destruction through his life, the Semtex stuck to his spine and nothing was able to change his mind. He promised not to listen to their last words, and to take all of them with him into bitter misery – using his own pain as his knife. He’d come to such a point of emptiness in fact, that he believed his existence was only sustained as an embodiment of his numbness and his bitterness, and naturally it was only an amount of time before that faded out too. As he stood in the darkness, he took a moment to not only admire accessories, but also his clothes. His attire consisted of a two piece black suit with polished black shoes, remarking about how well it suited him, despite how odd it felt to actually be wearing one. In truth, Casper had never bought a suit before in his life, but as he was going to meet God, he wanted to look nice. He prepared for his departure, tying his apparatus to the ceiling fan above him, before getting the stool into place. He climbed onto his podium of glory which had recently become his beacon of light. Slowly, he put his head through his necklace of rope, struggling to run it over the lump in his throat, before finally setting it into place. Tightening it, he felt strangely comfortable with his predicament, preparing to turn his bedroom into his body bag and his home into a headstone. He closed his eyes and took his last breath, kicking away the stool and entering his permanent holiday of certain decay. Jac Simpson, Year 11

◊ Is this something you both want? It might seem obvious, but it’s important to make sure you’re on the same page when it comes to having a second child. ◊ The costs involved. If you’ve already got a child, you’ll know that being a parent can be expensive. Although you can save money this time through hand-me-down clothes and baby equipment, you’ll still have to budget for food and childcare, and is there enough room for you all at home? ◊ Going back to work. Consider how you feel about returning to work after your second child is born and how long a break you want. Due to recent changes in the law, parents can now apply for shared parental leave, which may not have been an option with your first child. ◊ Support available. Do you have the same support network available as when you had your first child? Perhaps your parents have retired now and have more time to help or maybe you’ve broken up with your partner and are now a single parent. Speak to your nearest and dearest about if and how they might be able to lend a hand this time around. ◊ Your family setup. When you introduce a second child, the family dynamic will inevitably change. This can be great: your first child will have a sibling to play with and confide in, but it will also mean more demands on your energy and less alone time. Relationship Counselling can be a good way of preparing for a big change. Relate North Devon offers information, advice and counselling for all stages of your relationships, including family counselling which can include support when preparing for and adjusting to the arrival of a new baby. Call us on 0300 7729681or visit www. relate-ed.org.uk for more information.

ith the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s second child, many parents will be questioning whether to follow in the royals’ footsteps by adding to their brood. In anticipation of the discussions the royal baby is likely to spark amongst couples, Relate North Devon has come up with a list of things to consider before committing to more kids. Relate counsellor Veronica Beckett said: “The decision to have your first child is arguably the biggest commitment you’ll ever make, but choosing when to have your second can be equally daunting. It’s totally normal for couples to be raring to go one minute and then have cold feet the next. Often one partner feels desperate for another baby, whereas the other is content with the way things are. Relate can help couples who are considering having more children to assess the potential impact on them and their relationship, have difficult conversations and explore options.”

e had a great time at May Fair, quite a few of the boxers and our ladies did exceptionally well in the round the tree race, we had top places for Ned Pettifer, Nathan Board, Matt Gray and Trai Shepheard, and then the boxing club picked up the prize for the best male group, you will be pleased to know that the boys had the chocolates and Wayne Hill had the grown up bits!!! We also took part in the carnival, and got first prize for our class, and we had great fun going around with the procession, and handing out leaflets – everyone was great fun! The boxers are still hard at it with their training, and we have two getting geared up for bouts at the end of the month at Tiverton, good luck to Jack Sussex of Torrington and Robbie Moore of Winkleigh, as always I am very sure that they will do themselves and the club proud. We would very much like to thank the Mayor Richard Rumbold for his support with our club, it has been very much appreciated, and of course for the support from all in Torrington. We will keep you updated with the progress of the boxers as we head towards the end of the season. Natasha Moore

Armed Forces Event

T

his year’s Armed forces event is nearly upon us. The event is growing in size and popularity, with new displays and presentations covering WW1 and WW2 attending for the first time. For any teaching staff reading this, the first two days (25th and 26th June) are for school pupils and staff only. Armed Forces Day, 27th June, is a free event for the whole region, but donations to this year’s chosen charities, the RBL and SSAFA, will be gladly received.. The venue this year is Pilton Community College, Barnstaple, and opens at 10am, closing at 4pm. For those veterans and their families living amongst us, it’s a great event at which to put on that beret, dig out the tie, polish badges and medals and show Devon what it meant to be part of the finest military in the world. There will be plenty of uniforms and images on display to show children and grandchildren what service life was like when you weren’t much older than them! Bideford Band and Tarka Pipes and Drums will be there playing for an appreciative audience, with a short drumhead service at 11am. Refreshments will be available. e are busy helping the Puffing Billy/Tarka Valley Railway Project renovate two raised flowerbeds on the platform, and planting should be completed by the time this Crier issue is circulated. We thank Barry Cubitt of the Vicarage Nursery for kindly donating the plants, and Dave Squire of RHS Rosemoor for working with Barry to create what should be an attractive, sustainable and easy to maintain feature. Further work is also being carried out on the flowerbed by S&G Carpets by a group of ladies from Torrington Horticultural Society, with plants being provided from various sources, and our thanks go to them for their dedication. Summer bedding will soon be going into the town square planters, (have you noticed that the posts around the town have also been painted gold and green to match?). The small planter at the top of Stoneman’s Lane has also been planted for summer. Torrington in Bloom is still seeking some new members, specifically someone who is good at fund-raising and someone who is good at publicity (and creating a decent website). We are so thin on the ground and would really appreciate this kind of help – you don’t have to be a madkeen gardener to undertake this work, so please contact me if you would like to help. Cherry Hammon, Chair Torrington in Bloom, 01805 625788 PS: I have a provisional date of 21st July for the judging of our entry into Britain (SW) in Bloom but it is not official as yet. (Don’t confuse this with the Best Garden judging date which is 30th July)

30th Year Celebrations Saturday 2nd May

This summer sees the Rugby Club enjoy its 30th year since being re-formed in 1985, as reported in last month’s Crier. A fantastic time was had by all that

attended (in excess of 200), with some good food and an excellent game of rugby, all washed down with plenty of liquid refreshments before the ‘Sons of Gods’ played the night away under a marquee in the car park. A massive thank you to everyone who contributed to the day; players, explayers, past and present members, all enjoying, a lovely relaxed, friendly afternoon/evening.

2015-16 Season – Training

Training for the new season is likely to start in the early weeks of July. We are delighted to confirm the arrival of two new coaches for the start of the next season. This has already been publicized in the local press, due to the high profile names we have managed to attract – Phil Gordon and Josh Squire. Phil is a very well respected former Captain of Barnstaple Rugby Club, who will be able to bring his wealth of experience at National League level to Donnacroft, and Josh also has vast experience to share with Torrington RFC. This has given the whole Club a great feel-good factor, following the disappointments of the past season and subsequent relegation.

The AGM will be held on Friday 5th June, 8pm at our Clubhouse, Donnacroft. There will be a short EGM beforehand to discuss the Clubs Constitution. We are, as always, looking for additional committee members to join TRFC Golf Day – 1st August our team to help take the Club forward, on Following on from the last two successful and off of the field, and ensure the Club Rugby Club Golf Days, we have arranged as a whole keeps progressing. another event this year.
