ell the first few weeks have been busy. Keeley and I have joined other Mayors at Northam Mayor Making ceremony, where we were entertained by Northam Town Band, and at Barnstaple, where Cllr Julie Hunt was elected to serve a second term as Mayor. In the same week it was good to relax for the afternoon at our own Secret Garden on the 27th May, it was a joint venture with Torrington in Bloom and our own Town Band. The weather was kind to us, sitting amongst the beautiful flowers and shrubs, listening to our wonderful band playing a mixture of old and new tunes. Surprisingly, I spoke to a few people who hadn’t been to the secret garden, and didn’t know where it was. This is a beautiful garden to be enjoyed (free) during the day, situated right behind the
Castle Hill building, in Sydney House car park. I know many people bring a book, buy a coffee/tea from the 1646 cafe, and enjoy a quiet hour or two in this beautiful garden. Talking about books, we have an excellent library also in the Castle Hill building, it’s important we make use of our libraries, please pop in and find out the many other services that the library

Celebrate the Birth of the National Health Service on 5th July
“
We are fearful that the provision of free healthcare that has been provided for us whenever we have needed it, when we have had an accident, a sudden illness or when we were born, is being gradually taken away.” On Wednesday 5th July, it will be the 69th birthday of the NHS, and we aim to celebrate this with a big party from 5.30pm onwards, to which everybody in our community is invited. It will be family centred for the first hour or so. It will be a ‘bring and share’ party, so bring a plate of party food and drinks. The venue, in Torrington, is yet to be determined. We will email final details to those on the STITCH newsletter. If you do not currently receive the newsletter and would like details of the campaign to restore our hospital beds, and also of the birthday celebrations and venue, then email John Wardman johnwardman@hotmail.com, with ‘STITCH Newsletter’ in the subject box. Common News
O
n 17 May at the Plough Arts Centre, we made a little bit of Torrington history when the Conservators’ Annual General Meeting was held in public for the first time. Opening the meeting, the Clerk referred to a large leather-bound volume of minutes from the first meeting in 1889. It was interesting to note that some of the issues facing the first Conservators were not so different from those we face today, including what to do about litter, although we seldom have to arrange a circus these days! I am honoured that the Conservators’ first order of business was to re-elect myself as Chairman, and Mandy Harrison as Vice Chair for the forthcoming year. Some of the necessary formalities laid down by the Commons Act can be a little bit dry. However, this year we heard presentations from Conservators and our Ranger, Alan Mitchell, on the work we do to keep the Commons and the River and watercourses in good health, the role of the Friends of the Commons and, importantly, the future of the Commons. We were very pleased to welcome a strong turnout from the public, with some searching and interesting questions. The public AGM was part of the Conservators’ plan for wider communication and engagement with the Town, and I am very pleased that the comments we received were very encouraging. As we promised last month, as soon as we are able to collate the results, we will be reporting on the responses we received from the recent questionnaire published in the April Crier. May brought us a long dry and sunny spell – glorious spring weather! But now the gardeners amongst you will be well aware that the recent rains mean that everything is going mad. Although we are up to speed with our annual cutting and trimming, the spurt of growth after the rains is making it hard to keep up. It’s great to see everything green again, but please bear with us as we work to bring the verges and grassy areas under control! Steve Jones, Chairman, chairman.conservators@gmail.com th

The STITCH Referral to the Secretary of State
I
n December 2016 the Devon County Council Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee sent the STITCH Dossier containing patient stories, the STITCH Report and the independent Tucker Report on the closure of the beds at Torrington Community Hospital, to Jeremy Hunt. It was the second referral to the Secretary of State, as the first one had only contained documents from the NHS. It appears that they had not been sent, although it had been agreed by the Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee. Chair of STITCH Margaret Brown said, “The lack of response, or of an apology, is deeply troubling and shows a cavalier attitude to the residents of Torrington and the surrounding parishes. Our community and many patients have been let down by the government and Devon County Council. The STITCH campaign continues to pursue this matter.”

So Why Is Everybody Going Crazy Over Gin?
T
here is certainly no doubt that gin has undergone a revolution in the UK and following the recent ‘World Gin Day’ celebrations on June 10th that took Roborough by storm, I feel it fitting to write a little about this topic. The fortunes of the spirit, once depicted by artist William Hogarth as the scourge of the 18th century, have undergone a sharp turnaround to become the trendy ‘spirit du jour’. Viva La Gin! Gin dates back to early 17th century Holland, where they call it Jenever, and was produced as a medicine to treat stomach complaints, gout and gallstones. To make it more palatable, the Dutch started to flavour it with juniper, which had medicinal properties of its own. British troops fighting in the Low Countries during the 30 years’ war were given ‘Dutch Courage’ during the long campaigns in the damp weather through the warming properties of gin. Eventually they started bringing it home with them… Which brings us here into the 21st century, with gin distilleries opening almost every week and pubs, bars and restaurants going from stocking just our old friend Gordons, to displaying five, six, or even more different gins on their shelves! So to answer the question of ‘why is everybody going crazy over gin? That I’m afraid I cannot! However what I do know is that I am certainly enjoying this gin journey, and am very excited to help celebrate and promote the fantastic gins that the West Country especially, has to offer. To find out more about West Country gins, or to sample some of these fine gins, drop in to The New Inn Roborough, where we offer over 20 different tantalising types, as well as a ‘trio of gins’ sampler with all the ‘perfect serve’ garnishes for £6.95. Hope to see you soon, Magda Berry (Landlady and gin lover) The New Inn, Roborough, EX19 8SY

Little Torrington Panto Everything I’d hoped for and more!
T
his year’s Little Torrington pantomime was a triumph of dedication. It is remarkable what a small group of people achieved, with the village hall packed across three nights! The theme, a parody of Downton Abbey, inspired some fine performances; from the committed Irish accent of Tom Branson (Alex Harrod) through to the Alan Bennet-esque Lord Down Town (Peter Bevan). The downstairs staff did much to help support the structure of the show and the performances from Mrs Patmore (Marina Crocker) and Anna (Mary Stevens) added much here. For the upstairs residents Lady Down Town (Susannah Metz) was suitably brash as an American aristocrat, and The Dowager Countess (Jen Hood) provided a fine and convincing turn as a corpse. The plot was a suitable vehicle for the comedy, and the comedy was great knockabout fun, with jokes aimed both locally and at the wider world. Particular highlights included the ‘malfunctioning’ flying pig and the misplaced cue cards during the Streets of Torry Town song, which was wonderfully performed. The other actors, who all played their parts superbly were; Hannah Harrod (Lady Mary), Len Withey (Mr Carson), Graham Crocker (Mr Barrow), Mark Stevens (Mr Bates), David Daniel (Mr Pond) and of course Tony Harper as the Gorilla. All productions, amateur and
Torrington in Bloom Judgement Day is Upon Us!
T
he Britain in Bloom judges are due on the 5th July and our own Best Garden competition is being judged on the 27th July. Please make sure your entries for the Best Garden competition are submitted by 30th June (we do allow a little leeway). You are likely to see quite a lot of activity around the town and the outskirts, with our members busy planting, and tidying up generally, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could all do your bit to keep Great Torrington looking clean, litter and dog poo free, especially on the 5th July. The judges’ route on the 5th should be from Rosemoor, up the hill to S&G flowerbed, through the town, into the South Street car park, along New Street to the Common so all these areas need special attention. The churchyard, the pannier market all need to be spic and span on the day, please. Our main rival this year is the town of Kingsbridge in the South Hams. This lovely little town has achieved gold for a number of years and been entered into the national finals of Britain in Bloom, so we are up against it! However, I think we have the talent and energy to take that last step up to getting gold! Our musical afternoon on 27th May in the Secret Memorial Garden went very well indeed. We were a little dubious at first since the night before we had endured that spectacular lightning storm and the morning was breezy and damp but, in the nick of time, the wind dropped, the sun came out and all was well. We raised just over £50 in plant sales, but most importantly we were able to promote this beautiful and peaceful garden to a number of locals who, believe it or not, had never visited or even knew of its existence! We also thank Vic Mortimer who made the new sign for us which, hopefully, will encourage visitors, and we also thank the group of volunteers who are now working hard on the renovation of the garden. professional, need people in the background who are invaluable. Peter Hood who organised the props, Paul Troke who was kept busy as the prompter and Alan Randall (music and special effects) all deserve a mention. Also, without the imaginative and often daring efforts of the script writer/director,
Bob Harrod, there would never have been a panto in the first place. I had a fantastic time and at just £5 a ticket there can be no better value for an evening of entertainment than the Little Torrington Panto! A member of the audience who wishes to remain anonymous!

Henry (Harry) Nicholls was born in 1891; both his parents Thomas and Mary were also born in the town. Their large family, comprising of a further thirteen children, can be found living in Calf Street in early census information. By 1901 Henry had become an errand boy for local trader Messrs. Snow & Co. upon leaving school. It was reported that his swift progress led him to become storeman at an early age for the firm. Henry enlisted at the beginning of the war in September 1914, with Torrington noted as his enlistment place. He was recruited to the 2nd Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. Along with nine other Torringtonians, he crossed over to France in the early part of April 1915. March and April had been a relatively quiet affair for the 2nd Devons and also saw very light casualties as a result of the inactivity, but their boost in numbers from reinforcements was a prelude to a coming offensive at Aubers Ridge. The attack at Aubers Ridge was scheduled for 9th May, however, 23rd Brigade, which included the Devons, would not be on point to lead the attack but would be held back in a supporting capacity. They spent the night of the 8th in the reserve trenches. On the day of the attack, following the initial assault, the Devons were ordered to move forward through the trench network to the assembly trenches. Although the early movement went through with little incident, the German guns soon trained on the supply trenches as a means of breaking up the flow of reinforcements. The losses on the 9th May were terrible, even bearing in mind that the Devons never went further than the front line trenches; in total they lost 243 men including eight officers. Harry Nicholls was amongst the dead. Private Nicholls is buried at the Mervillie Communal Cemetery in the Nord area of France. Henry would leave descendants, though. Before leaving for war he had married Matilda Alice Folland and they had two children together. The Nicholls family line lives on, and they still reside in the North Devon area today. his month four of us met for our second attempt at tackling the topic of ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’. The first offering was a lovely descriptive poem called ‘Flaming June’. It gave us a beautiful picture of farming life in Devon at this busy time of the year. The second piece was a musing on a picture in an art gallery of a tropical island scene which, on closer inspection, revealed that all is not as it seems. The moral is that we should never judge things at first glance without knowing the story behind them. The third offering was entitled ‘A Thousand Words’, and was based on a factual experience of discovering a little art gallery in Porthleven, in what used to be the old lifeboat house. Finally, and in a completely different genre, we heard a fantastical science fiction story set in the future. A man is fired from his job, and finds himself walking into a gallery of three dimensional moving pictures. He is drawn to a picture of an idyllic country scene, such as no longer exists in his world, and is invited to sign away his old life and step into the scene, which will be his new life. We will meet again at Torrington Conservative Club on Thursday 6th July 2017 at 7.30pm, when our topic will be “The Time of Your Life”. For more information please see our website at torringtonwriters.co.uk. Nikki Whiting

Fleur’s Gardening Forum Edible Flowers
T
his month, I am going to discuss edible flowers, since this is fast becoming a fashionable trend, particularly with celebrity chefs. There are good and bad points about using flowers in cooking and unless you are an expert, you should not really forage for them in the wild; much better to purchase seed or plants and grow them yourself. Even if you are an expert horticulturist or botanist, you still need to be careful not to overdose or prepare flowers incorrectly. You should also remember that other parts of the plant whose flowers you can eat may be toxic. Always refer to the Latin name of the plant you intend to eat, since common names can be, and are, confusing and sometimes, only one species is edible. You should be careful, when eating flowers, if you are pregnant, lactating or suffer with allergies such as hay fever or asthma, or skin allergies. Better safe than sorry. Warnings aside, flowers have been used in cookery for thousands of years to add flavour, colour and texture to dishes, or for decoration, ie, crystallised petals of violets, primroses, roses. Other flowers are used to flavour drinks: elder,

monarda (bergamot), jasmine, borage, hibiscus (tea). But there are many others that are edible and also delicious! Always pick flowers first thing in the morning when they are newly opened, as they quickly lose their flavour and freshness. One of the best flowers to cook are from courgettes, pumpkin or squash; male only (the thin, straight stems). This is a classic Italian dish whereby the flowers are dipped in a tempura batter and flashfried. They should be eaten hot and have a lightly spicy, peppery taste. They can also be stuffed and baked. Carnations and pinks have a spicy, clove-like flavour, especially the old fashioned varieties and are usually used as flavouring in cakes and puddings. In Tudor times, the petals were used to flavour and sweeten wine (Sops-in-wine). Use the tips of the petals only; the green bases can be bitter. Hemerocallis (Day Lily) flowers can be chopped and used in salads, they have a fresh flavour. Never use any other kind of lily flower, as these are toxic in various degrees! We know nasturtium leaves are edible but so are the flowers. Both have a peppery flavour similar to watercress.
Finely chopped they add a ‘bite’ to salads and sandwiches (mix with mayonnaise or cream cheese). Runner bean flowers are also edible, but only the scarlet flowered variety, as are pea flowers which are quite sweetly pea-flavoured. Lilac flowers add a hint of lemon to yoghurt or cream cheese. Jasmine flowers are mainly used to produce a fragrant tea but can be added to shellfish dishes, only Jasmine officinalis flowers, no other type! Whenever using whole flowers in cookery, always ensure you remove the reproductive parts, especially the pollen as this is often toxic. Fleur

Great Torrington Bowling Club Daring to be Different at Grosvenor Church
O
O
n Sunday 28th May, Great Torrington Bowling Club ran their Annual Charity Challenge Tournament and had 14 teams of nonbowlers, from clubs and businesses from the local area, playing in triples matches. The day started with the registration of the teams, then some instruction and practice, before they competed against each other, with a lunch and tea breaks provided. All teams had a club representative on the rink to advise and help them to keep the score. The winning triple was ‘Just Us’ made up from Sean Davey, Leaha Davey and Dale Wilson, and as well as a cup and mementos they were presented with a cheque for £350 for their charity, Children’s Hospice South West. A great day was had by all the players, and this was followed by an ‘Open to All’ bowls day on Sunday 4th June, for people to try their skills. Anyone wanting to find out more about bowls, look on our website greattorringtonbowlingclub. co.uk or contact the Secretary, John Pitts 01805 439 100. Fred Niven Great Torrington Bowling Club Captain
ver the last few months at Grosvenor Church Torrington we’ve been doing all the usual things you’d expect from a church, but rather differently. Starting with our first wedding! Matt and Cee, who recently joined the church, decided they would like to also get baptised during their wedding ceremony. So after sharing their stories of how they became Christians they got baptised, then donned white dressing gowns and with wet hair and no makeup to do their wedding vows! This was followed a week later by Sue, who has also recently become a Christian, and knew that the next step was to get baptised. Fairly standard, only Sue’s other love apart from Jesus, is her alpacas, so it was only right that we baptised her on the farm in front of her beloved alpacas in a giant paddling pool! We were joined by Torrington Silver Band, who Sue is a member of, and enjoyed a cream tea overlooking the beautiful Torrington countryside afterwards, wonderful! We usually meet each week at 4pm in Torrington Bluecoats Primary School, which is in itself different to usual church services, however in May we hired out the Plough instead of our normal service and gave away free tickets to watch ‘The Resurrection of Gavin Stone’, a romcom with a Christian message. We want Grosvenor Church to be a church that is accessible to everyone, a church that goes out into the community rather than waiting for people to come to us. Our usual services on Sunday afternoons are short and visitor friendly, with a separate place for the children to enjoy time to play and learn. For our next big event on July 9th, 4pm we have a Cornish band called ‘Wayfarer’ coming to take our service followed by a BBQ. We offer a warm invitation to you all to come along to this and enjoy good music, food and company all for free! Tim Gilbert

British Native Wild Flowers to Grow in Your Garden Potentilla palustris
W
e usually relate Potentilla species as plants that like lots of sunshine and free draining soil; they are both shrubby and herbaceous. This Potentilla grows in damp areas, or as a marginal pond plant. Its common name is Marsh Cinquefoil (five segments to a leaf). It is a vigorous and hardy perennial with a spreading, branching habit but which dies back during winter. The leaves are compound and greyishgreen with a slight silvery sheen and the branching stems sometimes have a reddish tint, but it is the flowers which are most curious as they are composed of sepals surrounding five petals and numerous stamens, and the colour is a deep maroon-purple. Although widespread, Potentilla palustris can be difficult to spot growing amongst other, brighter coloured damploving plants. However, bees love the blossoms and currently, in my garden, they are flying between this and a Salvia officinalis which is also in full bloom. You can purchase Potentilla palustris in most decent nurseries that have a dedicated water garden section but be aware that it is vigorous and suitable only for a medium to large pond or boggy area. I have tried collecting and growing the seed but without success so far – I think some patience and sowing in autumn to over-winter in the cold is required! Fleur

Cadets Conquer Mount Snowdon
O
ver the recent Bank Holiday weekend cadets and adult volunteers from across North Devon went to Snowdonia National Park for a 3-day residential with the aim of summiting Mount Snowdon and developing teamwork and leadership skills. They spent the first day learning new, and developing existing, navigational skills as well as leadership and team work skills on areas near the Glyders region of the National Park. Also over the duration of the weekend there was a wild camping Silver/Gold DofE practice expedition conducted in the Moel Siabod region of the National Park. Day 2 saw 18 cadets and six adults summit Mount Snowdon in an average time of 2 hours 45 minutes, which is a fantastic time. In total cadets summited via 3 different routes. On day 3 the cohort went on a tour of Dinorwig Hydro Electirc Power Stationwent and learnt about the unique history of the site as well as learning about conservation issues. Overall this was a very successful weekend which was enjoyed by all and after speaking with the cadets the plan is to go to the Lake District next year to tackle Scafell Pike. If you think you’re up to the challenge and want to take up an exciting and interesting new hobby then look no further! New Mayor’s Cadet appointed On Tuesday 16th May 2017 Corporal Trinity Hickford completed her 12 months as the Mayor’s Cadet and the Daniel Lobb was appointed as the Mayor’s Cadet for 2017/2018. Lieutenant Matthew Sanders, Detachment Commander of Great Torrington Army Cadet Force said, “being Mayor’s Cadet is what every cadet hopes to achieve at Great Torrington Army Cadet Force. Not just because it’s an important job serving the community along with the Mayor, but it gives them a real sense of pride and self-esteem. The reason I have selected Corporal Daniel Lobb to stand as this year’s Mayors Cadet is because he is always well turned out, takes real pride in what he does and is always willing to help with all the community duties that we undertake as a Detachment. He is an inspirational young person, who the younger cadets can look at as a role model”. Great Torrington Army Cadet Force
meets every Friday evening 7-9:30pm at the Detachment Hut, which is in the grounds of Great Torrington School. Young people aged between 12-18 years of age are more than welcome. Organic & Wholefood Buying Group News
O
ur Electro-Pollution talk included plenty of easily digested information about the health effects of mobiles, wi-fi, domestic devices, power lines, and smart meters. However the emphasis was on practical steps to mitigate the negative effects and how to make discerning choices. There were demonstrations, many questions answered, and the opportunity to buy electro-protection devices at a discount. Everyone who came really enjoyed the evening, commenting ‘wow, so many more people could benefit from this!’ If you’re interested in acquiring a protection device, do get in touch.
WellBeing Tip
Here come the summer holidays, so time to stock up with convenient wholefood, ready for spontaneous outings and get-togethers, enabling you to easily provide for more people than usual at short notice. Nut Butters: sunflower seed butter and tahini - rich in protein and good oils, really versatile. Use as a base for dips and dressings, desserts, treats and snacks. Ambient Silken Tofu: also brilliantly versatile for dressings, dips, desserts, vegan quiches and more. Light and cooling, yet high in protein, with no particular taste, add any flavour / seasoning you choose. Quinoa: gluten free and protein rich, light fluffy texture and nutty flavour. Cooks quickly like couscous, so easy for picnic salads, or served warm with sautéed vegetables and soaked nuts, or in stuffed
vegetables. Organic Chopped/Whole Tomatoes in BPA FREE tins: BPA is an industrial chemical in the polycarbonate plastic linings of food tins. It has been found to leach into food and is linked to a wide range of health conditions and is therefore best avoided. Various cooked beans in tins: Serve up a high protein, tasty, low cost dish easily and quickly. Beans are so underrated! They make attractive salads, feature in many international dishes and can even be used in baking – ever tried black bean brownies? Simply divine! Organic Baked Beans: my favourite is a delicious organic sugar free brand with baked potatoes or toasted Rye bread. Water-sauté a sliced onion and chopped garlic, then add the baked beans, makes it go further and is even tastier. Bean pastas might sound strange, but they’re quick, high in protein, low in carbohydrates but satisfying. Use to produce an unusual spectacular looking meal quickly. Try black bean spaghetti with brightly coloured veggies, stir fried in coconut oil, for delicious but light richness and energy. Make your own energy mixes from dried fruits, coconut, nuts, seeds, cacao nibs, sweet or savoury or both. Keep in an air tight tin, portable and super nutritious. Just beware of mindless eating as with cinema popcorn! Popping organic corn is fun with the kids, and a wholesome snack with a little sea salt or tiny drizzle of apple concentrate/rice syrup/agave.

Drinks for hot summer days: Organic apple juice concentrate is hard to beat, goes a long way, is universally popular and lovely with a dash of lemon. Jazz up your drinks with lemon balm/ mint /cucumber/fruit, have fun making it look pretty. Avoid ice cold drinks and ice cream, our kidneys burst into tears every time we even look at these! Cool drinks are fine; ice is detrimental to our wellbeing. Find the unabridged Wellbeing Tip with examples and wholesale prices on our Facebook page under files.

July Films at The Plough
W
e start July with a very special screening - Dying Breed: A Year on Three Cattle Farms in West Cornwall with the director, Mick Catmull, present to introduce the film and answer questions afterwards. He calls it his love letter to a disappearing way of life. There are other documentaries: This is Exile: Diaries of Child Refugees has been produced by Save the Children and will be screened in association with the Bude Refugee Support Group, who will share their experiences of being one of the very first towns in the UK to host a refugee family. Another film in the popular “Exhibition on Screen” series, I, Claude Monet, visits the places where he painted throughout Europe with a voiceover taken from his personal letters. Bunch of Kunst follows the Sleaford Mods, described by Iggy Pop as the world’s greatest rock’n’roll band. Mad to be Normal, though not a documentary is about the pioneering psychiatrist R D Laing, played by David Tennant. Mark Cousins’ Stockholm, My Love is described as an inventive docu-style fiction and a love song to the Swedish city. There are three foreign films this month, both with some English dialogue: the Finnish comedy with a serious edge The Other Side of Hope and completely bonkers French film Slack Bay. The third, The Red Turtle, is a much acclaimed animation from Studio Ghibli with no dialogue, but a wonderful story and visuals. There are two chances to watch Alien: Covenant. Exotic and period dramas
A Brilliant Start to The Plough’s Open- Air Season!
O
ur open-air theatre and music season kicked off at the end of May in the new ‘Garden Room’ at RHS Garden Rosemoor, and gave us one of our highest grossing weekends in the history of The Plough Arts Centre. On Friday 26th May we saw the welcome return of Andy Fairweather Low and The Low Riders, with special guests on the night, ‘The Hi Riders Soul Review’ featuring an extended brass section and Hammond Organ throughout the show. All the old favourites were there; Bend Me Shape Me, (If Paradise is) Half as Nice, Gin House Blues, Wide Eyed and Legless to name just a few! On Saturday 27th May we had a complete sell out with Grammy Award winning music legend Leo Sayer and what a night it was! I think everyone had forgotten just how many hits he had, and he certainly sang every one of them on the night what a bundle of energy he still is. When I Need You, Raining In My Heart, Giving It All Away, Moonlighting, One Man Band, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing - and he certainly did that, with everyone out of their seats or dancing in the aisles and two standing ovations - what with fabulous weather too - a great weekend was had by all. The following weekend brought Plough patrons and favourites Show Of Hands back at Rosemoor, and once again we had a near sell-out with an early evening performance from these masters of folk – if you missed them I can guarantee they will be back sometime next year! include The Promise, set in the last days of the Ottoman Empire; the British comedy/country house mystery The Hippopotamus, based on the Stephen Fry novel; and My Cousin Rachel, an adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel. There’s a rare opportunity to see Woody Harrelson’s Lost in London which started out as a ground-breaking cinema
event, shot and watched in real time. We have two blockbusters to mark the beginning of the holidays (there will be more later!): the latest Pirates of the Caribbean and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Please visit www.theploughartscentre. org.uk or pick up a July film flier from the TIC, library, Brown’s Deli or The Plough.

Further details from: Karl Williams 01271 549680 As part of their Leadership Challenge, Year 7 have interviewed many local leaders. Here’s Adrianna’s piece about a local pastor. Tim Gilbert: A Local Leader
T
im Gilbert is a religious leader. He is a local pastor who travels around Torrington, Bideford and Barnstaple sharing his belief of God with other Christians and non- Christians. Tim Gilbert was born on the 16th May 1974 and enjoys travelling, surfing, fishing, singing and playing the guitar. He hopes he can release a music album in the near future. He has three sons and a loving wife. His family is the most important thing to him. If he could have anything in the world, he would have world peace or find the cure for cancer. When he was young, his dreams were to get married, have a family and have a job to support his family. He had a good childhood along with his three older sisters and younger brother. He felt very fortunate because when he was younger, as a treat, their parents would take them to have fish and chips. The first time he went to a restaurant was when he was thirteen. This was a rare experience because there were seven in his family and it would have cost them a lot of money. When he was younger he didn’t have many things. This shaped what was the most important thing in his life spending time with his family. His parents helped out at a church and were kind and sincere towards others. They did not force Tim to go to church because he would get bored and not enjoy it as much. When he was 16 he got invited to play for a rugby club but his church group was at the same time. His parents did not stop him from going to rugby but he chose to go to church because he felt he had started to create a relationship with God and didn’t want to stop having faith.
Just last year, Tim worked for Vodafone. His boss allowed him to have two days off each week and reduced his hours because he understood he needed more time to connect with God. Finally, after 17 years of working at Vodafone, he quit so he could improve his belief and relationship with God. He studied theology for one year and started sharing his faith with others. His wife and him became family leaders at church and soon after Tim became an elder and finally, he became a pastor. It worries him a bit that not as many people go to church but he knows that churches die and churches grow. He believes everything he reads in the Bible but he questions it at times. He started sharing religion with others because it was like he had found the secret to life and he had to share it with others because there is a difference to living life and living life to the full. This is why he helps out and runs clubs like Allsorts and Christian Union that share religion with others. In his job, every week is different because people get baptised, he prepares sermons and he visits sick people. He goes to church twice on Sunday. He believes in something you cannot see, making this ‘faith’, and says he would be willing to die for his faith in God. He believes that we are not always the best we can be but says God forgives us. God also teaches us to love everyone, people who steal from us and people who have no one to love. Overall, Tim Gilbert is amazing for spending his time sharing his belief of God with others. He helps people understand Christianity and the concept
of it and does not get paid much to do it. So, he does his job to help people and this is more important than earning lots of money, which would not buy him happiness. Adrianna Jankowska, Year 7
As those carefree summer days approach, we are thinking of the time we will spend at the beach, and other places. The beach of senses
A day at the beach isn’t just a day at the beach, There are amazing senses around us. The strong smell of the salty sea water fills your nostrils as you arrive, The sight of the blinding, hot sun blazes onto your head. The sound of seagulls screeching as they soar through the summer sky. But that is not all at a day at the beach, there are other senses surrounding us, The smell of the fresh air fills the sky with joy, The sight of people playing in the sea, with excitement in the air. The sound of the waves crashing to shore, washing away the sorry sand. The touch of red hot sand burning your feet with every step. And then the sad sound of disappointment filling the air when the day is over. Leaving the beach of senses, alone in the night, waiting for more senses tomorrow. Aiden Craker, Year 8

Year 9 wrote some poems about nature. We used pictures of Exmoor to inspire us. Here are three that we really love. Exmoor
Exmoor, green as far as I can see, With some strange trees, Without many leaves.
I Run With the Wind
The one place that I go, Where all of my troubles get Blown away in the wind. The one place that I go, Where the trees are whispering Secrets to each other. The one place that I go, Where the stream forces its way In over the pebbles Glistening in The sun. The one place that I go, Where I can run on the path, With leaves and branches Brushing against my face. The one place that I go, Where there could be A monster’s silhouette Ready to pounce on you from Behind the bushes. The one place that I go, Where I know that whatever danger there is, I don’t need to worry about it. Because I am happy, Because I am free, Because I run with the wind. Georgia Duncan, Year 8
Look around. This beautiful view, With the twists and turns Of the stunning hills. See all the bright birds, Swooping swiftly, Over the hills Then gushing through the wind, Spiralling high in the sky. Look closely, You see bugs buzzing And twitching. Nearby, the blossoming flowers, Also the mysterious grass. Winter near the Exmoor slopes. It all starts to freeze As the weather gets colder. All the rivers start to turn ice The plants and grass start to frost. Ellie Land, Year 9
The Moor
As you look around You see flowers smiling at you, Deer eating grass then looking up. Ponies galloping through The grass and trees. The sun shining and peering Though the trees, and mist Lifting up from the ground And the wind blowing it away, But then, as calm as a flat sea.

The Moor
The beautiful landscape, down below. The noise of the busy trees. The delightful smell of the heather As you brush by. The pleasant feel of the grass As you lightly touch it. You can also see the weird angled trees. The gentle chirps of the birds As they sing to each other Up high, in the clear blue sky. As you walk you hear the stream. The rushing stream is coming closer. The cold delightful feel of the stream As you walk in it. The smooth hard rocks under your feet. In the distance you can see the ponies Dancing and darting across the stream. As you sit You can see the colourful patchwork Safely blanketing the moors. Kirsty Milton, Year 9
People walking their dogs. Dogs wanting to play all day. Kids playing games with a huge smile. The night sky with stars Twinkling with a beautiful blueColoured sky behind it. The foxes, owls and other animals Come out to hunt Late at night. Katie Collins, Year 9
