From Your Mayor…

D

uties as your newly-elected Mayor have already begun to fill my diary. I have busy times ahead meeting other newlyelected Mayors and attending special occasions here in Great Torrington.

Some I have already attended include Golden and Diamond Wedding Anniversary celebrations, Barnstaple Mayor Making and Northam’s Charity evening and I have been accompanied by Councillor Diana Davey, my Consort.

The Town Council Meeting on the 2nd June was a lively affair, debating health issues which are affecting our community. Other business considered the following: 1st motion: To set up an economic regeneration group, this was unanimously supported.

2nd motion: That our Town Council supports a demonstration to be held in Barnstaple, against possible cuts to NDDH services, this was also unanimously agreed. Town Mayors will be asked to wear full regalia as a show of unity against these cuts. Look out for more news as this story gathers momentum Congratulations to our Great Torrington Cavaliers who have received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services, this is in recognition of their support for our community for 46 years, and is equivalent to an MBE. Well deserved!

By the time you read this, the party in the Square on the 12th June to celebrate our Queen’s 90th birthday and the many years of service she has given us, will have taken place. I’m sure it will have been a fun day for all.

Torrington in Bloom is happening here on the 19th July, please help to tidy up our town and do some weeding in readiness for the judges’ visit, ‘growing for gold’ is the theme this year.

Commons Treasure Hunt

he Torrington Commons Conservators are arranging another walking Treasure Hunt this summer. The route on this occasion will cover areas of the town, as well as skirting the Commons, and will be an ideal afternoon out for all the family. The event will be held on Sunday 4th September and is free. The Treasure Hunt will start from South Street Car Park, and you are asked to be there at 2.30pm, enabling us to send groups out at regular intervals depending on numbers.

STITCH - Share Your Support for Local Hospital Services

A

s we reported last month, vital lifesaving and time critical services are hanging in the balance at NDDH. By the time you read this, the Success Regime will have held a meeting at the Barnstaple Hotel detailing their plans for the hospital. This is to be followed by public consultation meetings, so watch the press so that you do not miss the chance to voice your concerns and challenge any unacceptable proposals.

We would like to respond to some of the comments made by the Trust in last month’s Crier: * “The Trust isn’t considering removing vital lifesaving services: it is part of the Devon wide success regime.” This is rather side stepping the issue as the Trust is responsible for provision of our healthcare and the Success Regime would not be involved if it was being adequately delivered. * “The geography of the area means that hospital-based services will remain an important feature of healthcare provisions across Devon, including in the north.” Does that mean a fully operating acute hospital, or just a base for provision of clinics?” * “The author of the letter is clearly anxious.” The author was voicing the concerns of a very anxious community which has seen its health services reduced, and fear for the future. * “The Trust alerted Stakeholders to staffing issues in minor injury units several months before temporarily closing the MIU at Bideford for around a week.” How and when were the public advised? Has the staffing problem now been resolved?

Is the future of Bideford MIU assured?

* “The Trust has never declared a black alert and has had two red status days in April and May so far - defying trends elsewhere in the region and country.” We referred to the red and black alerts at Exeter and Taunton, which would impact on our community if they were the only alternatives to Barnstaple - but it’s good to hear that the Trust is confident that the service at NDDH is not subject to such alerts.

With the closure of so many community hospitals and reductions in service, one might expect that costly management tiers might have been reduced to reflect the slimmed down service. It will be interesting to see if this features in the Success Regime’s proposals.

By the time you read this, STITCH will also have attended the next DCC Health & Wellbeing Scrutiny meeting on 20th June and will have appealed for the committee to press for our local healthcare issues to be referred to the Secretary of State.

We cannot afford to be complacent; the outcome of the NDDH review could have an enormous impact on the quality of life for all of us. To get your views across: * The Journal has launched Hands off Our Hospital Campaign - so register your support. * Lobby your councillors, mayor, MP. Write to The Trust, Success Regime and the press. * Sign the petition - see link below * Attend public consultation meetings and let your voice be heard.

We must all do all we can to ensure that vital lifesaving and time critical services are retained at Barnstaple hospital.

Torrington Corps of Drums Reformed

M

any of Torrington’s older residents will remember when the Torrington Corps of Drums was originally formed back in 1976.

We played all over the South West for six years, putting the good name of Torrington on the map. Sadly, it came to an end as younger players grew up and moved away.

This year however, the Corps of Drum reunited on May Fair Day for their 40th anniversary. The reunion parade was a great success, and the feedback each player received afterwards from the local community was a triumph.

We have decided to reform! At the moment we are trying to raise money for new instruments and uniforms, which will cost within the region of £15,000. In the coming months you will see us selling draw tickets and putting on various fund raising events and your support will be greatly appreciated. We are also in need of some new recruits aged 12+. Can You Help With a Local History Project?

D

r. Sue Baker, has a new project under way that she hopes our readers will be able to help her with. Author of Exmoor Ponies - Survival of the Fittest, Sue is now compiling a new book aiming to bring together local anecdotes and stories about Exmoor ponies, up to 1970.

Two stories she needs help with relate to Torrington: Back in the 1930’s, Heard’s garage in Torrington ran an annual charabanc outing to Bampton Fair pony sales. I am hoping that

“Can anyone remember Tommy Reddaway who used to buy a pony most years?” perhaps someone in Torrington might be able to tell me more about this – perhaps stories have been handed down in local families? Can anyone remember Tommy Reddaway who used to buy a pony most years? In addition, it would be fantastic if there are any photographs in existence showing the charabanc and passengers.

Also, does anyone know anything about a carrier service that Peter Hayward operated with his Exmoor pony and cart between St. Giles and Torrington during the last war? Again, information and photographs would be a great contribution to my project.

Naturally, if any readers have other interesting tales of Exmoors, I would love to hear them so please get in touch.

Tarka Valley Railway C.I.O. – Could You Help?

A

ctivity on the railway continues apace, with a great volume of work being carried out on site, which is hopefully visible to visitors and passers-by.

Behind the scenes, work is also at a high level on all the documentation needed as part of our status as a charity organisation. Apart from routine correspondence and meetings, we have to produce and keep updated; health and safety procedures, working procedures and the like, as well as maintain contact with other organisations relevant to our status as a heritage railway.

All this – just like the physical work on site - is being done by dedicated volunteers, and we are now in need of some additional help, particularly on the administration front. We also need additional volunteers to help open the shop/information centre in the carriage at weekends.

If you have experience in administration, retail, financial, marketing, charity or publicity and would like to become involved in a really worthwhile project please get in touch.

Our ‘working party’ meets every Thursday at the station, when you can meet some of the gang and find out a little more about our aspirations. Alternatively please contact us via the website or by email. We’d love to hear from you.

Our autumn open weekend will be on the 3rd and 4th September. We shall have a stand at the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway’s autumn weekend on 24th and 25th September. Over the winter period we will be having a series of talks and a quiz monthly from September through to March.

We hope to have a stall in the Torrington Christmas Market and Santa will also be visiting us – more nearer the time!

L

ibraries Unlimited is the new public mutual, (and hopefully soon to be charity), which is now running Devon Library Service. This is a big undertaking, as Devon has 50 libraries spread across the mainly rural county. It has been a huge undertaking, moving at arms’ length from the County Council, who have been very supportive of this venture; things like pensions, property and all the financial implications of going it alone, plus the importance of keeping the staff abreast and comfortable with all the changes that this entails.

Ciara Eastell, CEO, and her management team have worked incredibly hard to get this off the ground, and in January a Board of Trustees was appointed to oversee Libraries Unlimited, chaired by Julie Dent. There is a contract from Devon County Council to run the library service for the next five years, and while obviously having to look at additional forms of funding, libraries need to run as before while building on the solid base to improve and expand. There will also be the freedom to form partnerships and be entrepreneurial in the local and wider communities. As a mutual, the organisation is owned by its staff and the network of library Friends Groups across the county.

The Board is formed of people from the local communities and staff members and has a wide range of experience, age and skills. Ciara Eastell has set everyone the target to go out and tell five people a month what libraries can do for them! People are encouraged to become a Friend of their local library and get involved. The Mission statement makes it quite clear what will guide this new organisation: “Libraries Unlimited believes in the unlimited potential of library services to make a positive difference to people’s lives and communities through a shared love of reading and access to high quality information and facilities.”

With doom and gloom about the future of libraries being bandied about, it is encouraging that in Devon there is faith and vision to start a new organisation to bring libraries into the 21st century.

My name is Jenny and I have been in the hospitality trade from the age of 17, managed a pub for 10 years in Rushden, went on to support and train in the industry for 15 years, ran a private members bar in Burton Latimer and was a general manager for a very busy pub/restaurant in Souldrop before I took on The Cranford Inn! We moved to Devon in March 2016 and opened for business on Good Friday.

My husband Chris, is a brick layer by trade and his only experience of a pub is from a customer point of view, which can be helpful! My son Bob, has been a chef for about 12 years and runs the kitchen here at The Cranford. All food is home cooked and locally sourced produce.

Bob and I have worked together at other pubs where I have been a manager, and we decided to go it alone and get our own place.

Common News

T

o many of us the Commons are a pleasant area of green where we can take a stroll or walk the dog – classic Devon countryside but maybe nothing remarkable! Slow down, wait a while and you might find something special. Our Commons are home to a host of unusual, even rare, species and as summer gets into full swing there are lots to see. So far this year we are seeing an abundance of flora and fauna. Recently we have seen kingfishers along the river at Taddiport Bridge and near the Puffing Billy; a small seldom-seen bird that you might never notice until a flash of iridescent blue catches your eye as he takes off. Many people don’t realise that the Torridge, where it passes by Torrington, is a proper part of the Commons and we are lucky to host the even rarer otter. They have been seen this year by Taddiport Bridge, surprisingly close to human habitation, but I suspect you will have to be up early in the morning to see them.

Also best seen on a warm summer morning are the adders, which warm themselves in the early rays on grassy banks. You will have to be very keen-eyed as they are almost perfectly camouflaged. People are often worried about meeting our only native venomous snake, but they will only defend themselves if confronted, and there is no need to be unduly concerned. We would just advise that if your dog happens to be the curious type that likes to go exploring the undergrowth, you might want to be cautious and keep them on a lead when walking the sunnier parts of the Commons.

This year the purplish/pink Southern Marsh Orchids are particularly abundant. Not one of the rarest orchids, but nevertheless a beautiful and special plant that we are lucky to see here. For the best displays take a walk over Reeds Field, connecting Commons Lake with the Tarka Trail and, while you are there, see the wild irises and dragonflies around the recently created pond. We are particularly proud that our careful management of the Commons encourages so many varieties of flowers, plants, insects and fauna.

However, there is one variety that we could well do without. Unfortunately, like many areas of countryside, we see small areas of Japanese Knotweed, a highly invasive plant that, unless controlled, will overtake native plants. Total eradication is almost impossible, but we keep these under careful observation and, following Environment Agency guidelines, we have been successful in preventing it from spreading. Early identification is important and we always welcome feedback from users of the Commons who spot this pernicious invader.

Lastly, just a reminder that, in the summer, visitors are welcome to park up on the Old Bowling Green, an excellent place to start your walk, but please remember that the gates are locked at 7pm sharp. On that note I would like to thank Brenda Britton who makes sure the gates are locked every evening throughout the season. Please make her job easier by leaving the Old Bowling Green on time.

church-going woman today told me that her neighbour takes the bus every day. He goes to Barnstaple for example, not to get out, but returns on the same bus. She said “I think he’s guilty of abusing the bus pass”.

I deliberately caught the bus home instead of having to share a lift home with her! He’s not abusing his bus pass, but using it.

Perhaps because: He’s already paid for it.

He’s managing his loneliness and isolation.

In need of social interaction.

Making himself available to others.

Is able to listen, offer help/advice.

He enjoys travelling.

He’s overcoming sorrow and/or a trouble mind.

He enjoys sitting in a warm, clean, contained communal space, he may feel safe.

He’s taking time out; being driven.

He’s peacefully keeping himself busy.

his year’s annual ‘Dinner and Dance’ was held at Langtree Village Hall, where a good number of people attended the end of season bash, all smartly suited and booted.

Army Cadets Clear Local Historical Site

I

n May Army Cadets from Great Torrington and Holsworthy Detachments spent two days assisting the Friends of Berry Castle with clearing up an Ironside Hill Fort, situated within Huntshaw woods. The 20 cadets cleared loads of deadwood from the area to allow flora and fauna to flourish, and also easier access for archaeologists and other interested parties to study the area.

There was a visit by The Commandant of Devon, ACF Colonel Ashley Fulford OBE, who chatted with the cadets about their experience. Everyone agreed it had been a positive, interesting and useful event with many using it towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and all gaining credit towards their APC Training Badges, Cadet in The Community section.

Thanks to Great Torrington Cavaliers for their kind donation from the Trumpton Bonfire, which allowed us to carry out much-needed refurbishment work on our Detachment Standards. Great Torrington Cavaliers said, “The Great Torrington Army Cadet Force give a lot of help and support to community events, so we’re pleased to have been able to help them.”

On Tuesday 17th May 2016 Corporal Freddie Webber completed his 12 months as the Mayor’s Cadet with Corporal Trinity Hickford being selected to take over the important community role for the next year.

Congratulations to Cadet Lukas Kunneke of Great Torrington Detachment on successfully completing the 45 mile Ten Tors Challenge Event 2016.

Great Torrington Army Cadet Force meets every Friday evening from 7-9.30 pm at the Detachment Hut, which is in

the grounds of Great Torrington School.

Young people aged between 12-18 years of age are more than welcome.

Community Event to Collect Glove Makers’ Stories for Short Film Series. Have You Got Stories to Add?

T

o coincide with Bideford Heritage Day on Saturday 2nd July 2016, The Burton Art Gallery & Museum will be hosting a free event to collect stories about the glove industry in North Devon, for a new series of short films.

Glove Stories is the latest project from community film makers North Devon Moving Image, to collect and preserve valuable firsthand accounts of life in North Devon.

Gloving was an important industry for centuries, with factories in Appledore, Bideford, Great Torrington and Pilton in Barnstaple, as well being a source of income for many home workers. The industry came to an end in 2006 when the last factory closed its doors for the final time.

Terry Priscott a former glove worker who runs the The North Devon Glove Industry History Page on Facebook says “It was once North Devon’s biggest employer. If you are local to the area, particularly Great Torrington, it is highly likely that some of your ancestors worked in the glove industry! Gloving is an important part of North Devon’s heritage but there are currently no books or other information available on it.”

NDMI’s Glove Stories project aims to set this right by recording personal reminiscences from those who were associated with North Devon’s glove industry, and use them to produce a series of short films. The films will be free to watch via NDMI’s website and at The Burton Art Gallery & Museum. There will also be a screening of the series at White Moose Gallery in Barnstaple, to complement the Hand to Hand exhibition by local artist Sue on 14th July.

Amanda McCormack, Creative Director of North Devon Moving Image says “We are inviting people to come along to the Burton on Saturday 2nd July to share their Glove Stories; either by interview on camera or by writing anecdotes on our Glove Stories memory cards. It would be great to see some old photographs and artefacts too.”

he National Gardens Scheme is a charity which raises funds for nominated beneficiaries by visitors paying to attend open gardens and enjoy home-made teas or buying plants. Since its foundation, the Scheme has donated over £45 million, with the current target being 80p of every £1 raised at gardens to be donated to the annual beneficiaries.

In the great majority of cases, the owners of gardens donate the total amounts raised at their open days, only very occasionally are minimal expenses deducted. Their generosity is responsible for the millions of pounds that the charity is able to donate every year. Charity Challenge Cup Event Great Torrington Bowling Club

n Sunday 22nd May we held a Charity Challenge Cup event to raise money for charity and introduce the game of bowls to those who’ve never played before.

12 mixed teams of non-bowlers competed for the cup, playing three rounds to decide the winner and each team nominated a charity they wished to support. The teams represented clubs, pubs and local firms.

The winning team was Jimmy’s Boys, a late entry from The Cavalier and they received a cheque for £300 for the North Devon Air Ambulance.

A great day was had by everyone and we hope to make this an annual event.

t has recently been announced that the Great Torrington Cavaliers have won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services, a major national award for voluntary groups.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is given annually to groups in the voluntary sector for community service. The award was announced by The Queen in celebration of her Golden Jubilee in 2002. It is the highest award that can be made to any voluntary group, equivalent to an MBE. The Torrington Cavaliers are a long established group who raise money for local charities and good causes. They were established in 1970 and since then have staged many events raising thousands for charity. They are perhaps best known for their spectacular giant themed bonfires, which have achieved national and international recognition. In addition to these bonfires the Cavaliers also carry out a great deal of community work around Torrington, for special events such as Christmas and May Fair.

Cavaliers’ Chairman, Steve Young said “The Cavaliers are honoured to receive this prestigious award. It recognises all the hard work done by the group since we were formed in 1970. It’s estimated that we’ve raised and given away nearly half a million pounds in that time, helping thousands of local and national charities and good causes. The founder members, and all who have been involved since, would be and are proud to be honoured in this way. The motto established by the founders of the group was, ‘To provide entertainment the like of which Torrington has never seen before’, we will continue to do this and support the town in any way we can. As a Fairtrade town, Torrington has made Fairtrade part of everyday life; we can choose Fairtrade in our shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants; Churches and community groups are using Fairtrade. Jim’s Journey: A 630-mile Coast Path Walk in Aid of Local Cancer Patients

A

former communications manager for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust is preparing to walk 630 miles along the entire South West Coast Path this summer to raise money for two local charities that support cancer patients and their families.

Jim Bray left his job with the Trust last month to take up an eightweek challenge entitled ‘Jim’s Journey’.

Jim will be raising money for the Seamoor Unit, the new £2.5million chemotherapy and day treatment centre at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, and Exeter-based charity FORCE. Jim set off from Minehead on the 10th June and is due to climb more than 115,000 feet (nearly four times the height of Mount Everest), cross 288 bridges, catch 13 ferries, pass around 3,500 coast path signs and go up or down over 30,000 steps, before reaching the finish at Poole Harbour in Dorset on Thursday 4th August.

He will be charting his journey with a daily photo diary on Facebook.

The Seamoor Unit Fund is a leading appeal run by Over and Above, the Trust’s charity. FORCE provides physical, emotional, psychological and practical assistance to patients and their families from its Support and Information Centre in the grounds of the Royal Devon and

Jim’s 56-day expedition will include 52 days of walking, at an average of over 12 miles a day, and four rest days. He will be staying in B&Bs, inns and hotels and is funding the trip himself, enabling all money raised to be split 50-50 between the two charities.

e have chosen to have a Carnival theme this year, and have booked some fantastic entertainment for you all. There will be a bouncy castle, provided by Phatdog Entertainment, a ‘pillow bash’, face painting and candy floss! There will be some brilliant stalls and action-packed games - a mix of the old favourites and some excellent new attractions too. We also have an awesome raffle, with a super-cool main prize: a Go Pro! Come along and have some fun.

We are looking for cuddly toy donations for one of our most popular stalls, as well as bottles for the tombola.

We will also be needing lots of (nut free) cakes for the Fayre bake sale, so if you could drop off any donations to the school office (cuddlies and bottles asap so we can get organised; labelled baked goodies the day before - on 08/07/16), we’d be very grateful. Thank you.

Summer Fun with The Plough Youth Theatre

T

his July we have a joint show by local artists Marianne Edwards and Jan Lye. Marianne is an experienced pastel painter, inspired by the countryside and coastline of North Devon. Jan makes sea-themed ceramics inspired by the beautiful, rugged North Devon coastline. Images of oddly balanced trapped pebbles, driftwood or wave formations carved into the sand are re-aligned together to create the new and inspirational forms of these original, sculptural but functional ceramics.

Preview Friday 1st July 7pm,exhibition runs until Saturday 30th July.

by Paul Seed, ‘Up Town & Down West’. Bideford born, Torrington resident, two-time Bafta winning television drama director Paul Seed hates London and loves North Devon, however, he does take huge pleasure in finding fascinating and often beautiful images in both places.

Only one workshop this month but it’s a nice one: handmade books on Saturday 9th July with Megan Stallworthy. Learn bookbinding skills and take home two beautiful books, using handmade and pattern papers and different sewing, folding and gluing techniques. All the materials and equipment will be provided. Megan Stallworthy is a bookbinder and teacher, and a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen. She is an associate lecturer in Bookbinding at Falmouth University.

fter thanking Daphne Metherell for all her hard work as President during the past four years, members welcomed Angie Harper as our new President. We welcomed our speaker of the month who is a Dartmoor Ranger.

There will be no meeting in August in the Methodist Hall, but arrangements are being made to visit an Alpaca farm followed by a ‘bring and share’ picnic on Wednesday 17th August at 2.30pm.
