End of Year News from Great Torrington Town & Community Hall

W

hat a year it has been at the Town Hall, with so many different events taking place, which perfectly demonstrates that our lovely building is for all the Community to enjoy! Included in the mix was our recent children’s Halloween party; Wellbeing Fayre; Torri Youth fundraising and a pop-up shop for Barnardo’s charity; Community Choir; Lunch Club and, on Mondays, we welcome people with care needs and their carers. Not to forget mystic evenings, Police surgeries and computer skills training - what a variety!

We also held a candle-making workshop; indoor music events; burlesque chair dancing and, of course, our own very popular Christmas Fayre. May Fair is always a highlight, when the Town Council holds the official part of the proceedings in the Great Hall, and after the Town Hall Tavern is open for everyone to enjoy some real ale and soak in the atmosphere!

We have hosted several memorable weddings this year and met some lovely couples, and have also hosted special events such as a 90th birthday party for over 100 people. The fabulous feedback gave us a lot of pleasure and satisfaction! There are just too many events to mention, but we hope this gives you an idea of the variety of activities and events we do at the Town Hall.

Still to come is the Town and Lands Distribution Day on Friday 1st December 9.30am-2pm, please stop for a tea, coffee and mince pie or just a chat. Our ‘Swing into Christmas’ Dance is on 8th December at 7.30am, tickets cost just £8 - call Paula on 07793 241 555. Don’t forget to book our Christmas festive lunch, available on 7th and 21st December - bar, music, and good company! The December issue of the Crier is the perfect time to thank all the people who have helped us over the year, starting with Becky and Esther at The Crier. We should be very proud how the Crier has grown and developed over the years, it provides so much news to keep in touch with what’s happening in our town. Well done to all involved.

Thank you to our wonderful Knit and Natter group, who bring real joy with their window displays. This was started by Rosie Purcell, one of our Trustees. The ladies have formed a supportive group and there is a lot of fun and laughter (and cake!) on a Wednesday morning. Do pop in for a warm welcome.

Lucy Lowe, from lucyloweevents@outlook.com, has been running a series of community events for us this year and the Trustees would like to thank her, Royston and all her helpers for the efficient way they have worked to make them a success.

Now we are planning for 2024!

We are appreciative of the grant support we have had this year from the Town Council, District Council and the Town and Lands, as well as all the companies and Town Councillors who sponsored our Community Awards night back in March. We are continually looking for grants or sponsorship to help us maintain the Town Hall.

All proceeds from events are used for the upkeep of the building.

Finally, a special thank you to Nicky who works for us with so much energy and enthusiasm and our volunteers who play such an important role when we put on events - we couldn’t do without you!

I

t has been quite a year for everyone and through it all the Foodbank still continues. That, of course, is due to the wonderful support we receive from you, the people of Torrington and surrounding villages. This year the churches and Bluecoat School were kind enough to donate a very generous amount of tinned and packeted goods when they held their Harvest Services and we thank them for supporting us.

Once again, we would like to thank the Co-op, Lidl, the Plough, the Information Centre and the Cottage Hospital for allowing us to have collection baskets in their premises.

The cost of living is putting a lot of pressure on many people; if you or someone you know is struggling, please remember we are at the Baptist Church New Street on Tuesday and Saturday mornings 10am-12 midday.

Children’s Christmas crafting with Chris Saturday 16th December 10.30am12pm. This is a drop in event.

We would like to thank volunteers Chris and Jilly for their dedication to supporting children’s craft activities throughout the past year.

Torrington Library reading group is looking for new members We meet at Abbeyfield on the second Friday of the month. Our book selection is made from Devon Libraries ‘Choices’ list of book sets. The group pay £10 per session for the use of Abbeyfield dining room, with refreshments included, and a £90 subscription for our book selection.

Learn Devon will be in the Castle Hill foyer on 14th December and 25th January, promoting future learning opportunities in Torrington.

Walk & Talk – Thursdays 10.30am Our regular Walk & Talk will only break stride on Thursday 26th December – join Kate and the volunteers on Thursday 4th January to start the New Year on a firm footing!

One 2 One IT support If you have received a new smart phone, tablet or laptop for Christmas, and are now confused over what seemed so simple under instruction, our volunteer Perry is here to offer support

Bounce & Rhyme Storytime – Stay & Chat 10.30am Tuesdays. Remember this lively session only runs through termtime but babies, toddlers and their grown-ups are always welcome to use the library space to play and chat in the school holidays.

Baby Self Weigh Tuesdays 11.30am4pm is available each week.

Watch out for news for our Warm Library offer this winter. Last year’s ‘Meet up Mondays’ were a huge success and very well received, with the library opening for an extra session on Monday mornings. Refreshments will be on offer alongside activities and the opportunity to meet new friends for a chat.

North Devon Choral Society Concert

7.30pm Saturday 9th December, Church of St Michael & All Angels, Great Torrington ur concert on 9th December will be Handel's Judas Maccabaeus. Said by many to be his greatest oratorio, it tells the dramatic story of Judea c 170BC, thankfully ending in conciliation and peace. With many well-known arias and choruses, soloists will be Katie Wright, Rebecca Squire, Charne Rochford and Tim Mirfin, and will be accompanied by the famous 'Father Willis' organ, and conducted by John Hobbs.

Great Torrington Calendar 2024

Now available to buy! et your copy for £8 or two for £15 (cash only please and exact money appreciated) from Whiskers Pet Centre, Duffy’s Home Hardware or Great Torrington Museum.

We are also going to trial selling a small batch online with a small additional charge to cover postage and packaging via the OneGreatTorrington website (www. onegreattorrington.uk/calendar).

This year, the calendar is a larger format, with bigger photos and bigger boxes to write in. We hope that in future years the calendar will be self-sustainable and also provide a small amount of funds for projects around the town.

Whenever you are out-and-about the town and surrounding areas, take your phone or camera with you, keep taking photos and send them in and we will consider them for future calendars - gt.futuregroup@gmail.com Without photographers sending photos in, the Town Council for granting some of the funds, and two councillors for making selections, this year’s calendar would not be possible - thank you from the Futures Group! Cavaliers’ Christmas Give-Away

Light Up a Life Service

T

his will take place at Torrington Methodist Church on Sunday 10th December at 10.30am. It is a celebration of Christmas and also of the work of the Hospice, both the North Devon Hospice and the Children’s Hospice, South West, Little Bridge House.

This time of year is a special and poignant time to remember loved ones who are no longer with us. Light Up a Life gives you an opportunity to remember someone special this Christmas. They do not have to have been cared for by the hospice for you to make a dedication in their honour.

There will be an opportunity within the worship to light a candle in memory of those whom we love but see no longer.

All are welcome. There will be refreshments after the service.

Great Torrington Commons

ur bookshop in Dartington Cystal is doing really well, at the time of writing this article we have been open five weeks and you will find it next to the Pavilion Café. The shop is open six days a week Monday to Friday 9.30am until 4pm and Saturday 10.30am until 3pm.

Dartington Crystal will be closing on Sundays during the winter.

Dartington Crystal get visitors from all over the UK and some from abroad, so I have put up three picture frames in the shop with a map of the town and photos of most of the shops. I am hoping that this will encourage people to visit Torrington town centre to do a bit of shopping there.

At the same time, the Pavillion Café has told me that since we have been open that they have been busier.

All of the books on sale have been donated by people all over Torridge and North Devon, but we still need more please. You can drop off books, cds, dvds, jigsaws, Lego and vinyl records to us at the shop. We have had lots of these items delivered recently and we are very grateful for them. So please come along and visit our shop, and while you are there you can visit the café for a snack and a drink. If you live in an EX postcode you can sign up for a Dartington Crystal loyalty card. The card is free and with it you will be able to get a package of discounts and benefits in store, including 10% off food and drinks in the Café.

We are so grateful to Dartington Crystal for letting us use the space and all the funds are used to look after your Commons.

The Torrington Commons 365 Supporters group continues to grow with more members signing up each week.

Please, consider applying to be a Commons 365 Supporter if you can, the funds will be used to continue our goal of maintaining, improving, and protecting the Commons.

As a Commons supporter you are also able to be a Town supporter by using your membership card to get a discount or other benefit when you shop at the participating businesses. This month, Instant Images became the latest shop to offer a discount or other benefit, I am talking to some other shops to see if they will join.

The 365 Supporters just pay a £2 per month or a £24 annual donation which can be increased with Gift Aid by 25% if you are a taxpayer. You can let us know at the application stage if this applies to you.

Joining the 365 Supporters group is simple: Option 1: Cut out or photocopy the application form in the Crier and post it to the address shown. You can pay by standing order or cheque for £24.

Option 2: Visit www.torringtoncommons.org and navigate to the 365 Supporters page where you can apply online. Here you have the option of paying by PayPal or standing order annually or monthly. You can also print a form to post in with a cheque.

Option 3: You can email vicechair@torringtoncommons.org or phone or text 07956 366 390 and I will get an application form to you.

You can also collect an application form from the Post Office. Some of the shops in town also have them.

Appledore Singers Charity Christmas Concert

In aid of Harbour ppledore Singers’ Charity Christmas Concert will take place on Sunday 10th December, 2.30pm at Northam Hall (top of Fore Street).

The choir is looking forward to entertaining the audience with arrangements of festive music – both traditional and modern – and, as always, there will be the opportunity for audience participation.

There will also be our annual grand raffle and tea and mince pies will, no doubt, be a welcome treat during the interval.

Tony Nicholls will compere the concert, the choir will be accompanied

by Chris Beechey and conducted by our Musical Director, Pam Beechey.

This year our chosen charity is Harbour (Charity Number 1135311).

The aim of the charity is to promote social inclusion for the public benefit in the Bideford area of Torridge; to relieve the needs of those people who are socially excluded and to assist them to integrate into society – a very worthwhile cause.

Give the Gift of a Million Books this Christmas!

pecial free Christmas gift cards containing library memberships are being offered at Torrington library this winter, as an option for those struggling to afford Christmas presents during the cost-ofliving crisis.

Libraries Unlimited, the charity that runs libraries around Devon and Torbay, is slipping 5,000 library memberships into speciallydesigned Christmas cards – and anyone can take one for free from their local library to pass on as a gift.

Sophie Croft, Libraries Unlimited Reading Development Manager, said: “If someone buys one book a month and a daily newspaper, a library card could save them up to £500 a year. We’ve got a total of 982,919 books and eBooks available – that’s nearly a million reads, enough for even the most enthusiastic book-lover!”

“Books, eNewspapers, eMagazines, and lots more are available free with this simple little card – a library membership is literally the gift that keeps on giving, and we know how important it is keeping the costs of Christmas down this year for many people.”

There are three seasonal card designs to choose from – for adults, children and the under-5s. All the recipient has to do is take their card to the library, register it, and start enjoying all the free books and magazines, free WiFi and computers, events, groups, community and other benefits library membership brings.

With only 5,000 of the special cards being produced, people are encouraged to go to their local library and pick up their free cards sooner rather than later. There’s a limit of four cards maximum per person, and children aged 16 and under who are given a card will need a guarantor to register it.

Torrington Silver Band at Christmas

T

orrington Silver Band is very excited to be entering the Christmas season; it is such a wonderful time of year for a brass band. Throughout December you will find us under the Town Hall on Saturday mornings from 10am till approximately 11.30am playing Christmas carols.

We are always happy to take requests so please stop by to say hello and let us know what carol we can play for you.

This year the Band is holding a Christmas Draw with a first prize of £100!! The draw will be done at the Band’s Christmas Concert on Saturday 16th December.

Draw tickets can be purchased at £1 a ticket from band members and from Dafforn & Son Funeral Directors (Mon to Fri, 10am-3pm). They will also be available to purchase at the Christmas Concert (subject to availability).

Our annual Christmas Concert will take place on Saturday 16th December 2023 at Howe Concert Hall, Castle Street, Torrington. The concert will begin at 7.30pm, doors will open from 7pm. Admission cost is £6 per person, under 16s free, we can now accept card payments so no need to worry about bringing cash. There will also be free refreshments throughout the interval and the Christmas Draw winners will be announced. It’s sure to be an evening of festive entertainment for all the family.

TAAC Christmas Caper

17th December 2023 he Christmas Caper is a challenging BUT fun race where fancy dress is strongly encouraged. There'll be a prize for the very best dressed runner, as there will be for the overall winners and top three finishers in various categories. We often sell out or get close to it, so don’t hesitate too long before going for it if you’re interested. What we don't sell online will be available on the day so it is possible to enter on the day if you get out of bed and fancy it.

The club donates much of the race proceeds to local charities or causes, often presented at Round The Tree on May Fair.

Some practicalities: • The race starts at 11am, December 17th at Torrington Rugby Club, with registration from 9.30am. Get there early if entering on the day.

• Parking will not be possible on site but there will be plenty nearby.

• Food + hot drinks + bar will be open.

• Changing rooms onsite, but no muddy shoes in the clubhouse!

Nurturing Your Wellbeing at Christmas & New Year

T

he holiday season is a time of joy and celebration, but it can also bring with it a great deal of stress and pressure. From Christmas to New Year, the flurry of activities and expectations can take a toll on your emotional wellbeing. This year, prioritise your self-care and overall health by incorporating some essential practices into your routine.

Learn to say 'No: It is perfectly okay to say no to certain commitments, gatherings or events that may overwhelm you, as overextending ourselves can lead to burnout. Don’t be afraid to set boundaries and decline invitations or activities that don’t align with your wellbeing.

Keep active: Enjoying a walk out in nature, strolling on the beach, going to the gym or playing games can help to reduce anxiety, relieve stress and boost your mood.

Eat healthily and don’t drink too much: I know it can be hard but try not to overeat at Christmas. Eating a healthy diet helps to improve mood and overall wellbeing helping to increase energy levels, motivation and banish that sluggish feeling that can come with overeating and drinking. Remember alcohol is a depressant and drinking excessive amounts can cause low mood and irritability. Try not to use it as a coping mechanism for stress or sadness. Everything in moderation!

Breathe, Meditate and Tap: Amid the chaos of the holidays take a few minutes each day to breathe deeply, relax and focus on the now. Try breathing in for four and out for four. If you want to enter the Christmas season feeling calm, rested and renewed rather than frazzled and exhausted then I have something for you.

he Squire family are now into their 4th generation at Servis Farm. Joseph Squire started selling milk back in the 1940s, doing the rounds in and around Torrington.

After a 60 year gap, we wanted to return to selling milk direct to the public but there were a few issues to overcome.

• How do people get the milk? Not everyone can drive or is willing to go down a country lane.

• How can we do this in a sustainable way?

• How do we get around parking, sites and an electric supply when space is at a premium?

So we came up with the UK’s first solar powered, mobile vending machine. Not only will it help reduce waste, plastic packaging and food miles, we have taken it a step further by using solar.

We really want this to be part of the community, and for the benefits to stay in the area, so everything has been purchased within a 20-mile radius of the farm and everything needed for the cows is produced on the farm, as far as is physically possible.

It has been 4 years in the making, and we have had so much support from local businesses and friends that I hope they all take pride in what has been achieved.

It will be open and on location from 7am-8pm as follows: Monday and Friday - Caddywell Lane; Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday - South St Car Park; Wednesday - The Pill Car Park, Bideford; Thursday - Langtree Village Hall.

From Your County Councillor

I

t feels like it was only a few weeks ago I was writing for the summer double edition of The Crier, but time flies by and now here we are in the run up to Christmas!

As ever, it remains a busy time both here in Torrington Rural and at County Hall.

I am hoping that by the time you read this, a successful Devolution Deal for Devon will have been announced.

At the time of writing (8th November), discussions are still ongoing, but should a deal be announced then I will update readers with the details. I very much hope though, that any such deal means we can draw down more funding to improve our economy and run more services at a local, not national, level.

On local matters, first I want to welcome the announcement by Torridge District Council, Devon and Cornwall Police and the Devon and Somerset Fire Service that the long-awaited demolition works of the old Torrington Dairy/Creamery are due to start. It is really good news that we are on the verge of finally regenerating this long derelict site. While this is predominantly a planning matter, these works will likely have an impact on the local roads, and I will work with Highways to make sure any disruption is kept to a minimum as possible.

Another issue I would like to discuss, which has been a contentious matter for some, is the replacement of the Mobile Library Service. The original decision, taken in July, to end the service was called into the Council’s Scrutiny Committee and then referred back to Cabinet, with a final decision taken in November.

As I have previously outlined to readers of The Crier, for me the question has always been about how the Council delivers a service and is the Council delivering it in the right way. While the Mobile Library had many stops across 12 my communities in Torrington Rural,

last year, on average, a total of 83.6 people were accessing the Mobile Library Service. Torrington Rural has a population of 14,293, according to the 2021 census, meaning that just 0.58 per cent of the population was choosing to make use of this service.

I want a strong and effective rural library offer, but how can we provide that when we have a service that, on

friends, neighbours and family can collect books for people who are housebound.

The County Council will look to expand these.

The proposals I am most interested in developing further are establishing local community libraries, and a more effective rural outreach offer. This can be tailored differently for the individual needs of a community, but broadly we are looking at

average, more than 99 per cent of the population of a very rural area are choosing not to use?

Financially, it costs DCC £217,000 to run the mobile service every year.

The four library vehicles are close to becoming obsolete and are increasingly off the road for repairs and maintenance.

It would cost over £637,000 to buy replacements, and even more - £799,000 - to lease vehicles for five years.

So, while it is sad the service is coming to an end, we must look at providing it in a different way. DCC already has schemes such as the Home Library Service, which delivers books to people unable to get to a library through health, mobility or caring responsibilities, and the Good Neighbours scheme, where

a set up where: * Reservations can be placed online/ through the main Library Service * Pick up of books at a local community location * Provide an extended loan period similar to mobile library card benefits * 2 or 4 week drop off of books * Utilising a community/village hall, town or parish council officer, and/or local volunteers.

Library books currently move all around Devon across the 50 libraries in the County. If you order a book in Torrington that is in Axminster or Ivybridge, it will come to you. As the Council already has that system in place, it should not be beyond the wit of anyone to find a way to have those books

delivered to a community location.

We already have some very promising potential community library sites in Torrington Rural, as well as some existing facilities that I hope the Library Service will be able to augment.

For this article I have included a photo of the wonderful community book facility that High Bickington has at their Community Centre. I want more of my villages to have the opportunity to have similar facilities. If we really, genuinely want more people to take up reading, why would we be opposed to this? As one of my Parish representatives told me, they view this as an opportunity to get something better for their community.

I hope that is something we can all support.

The decision taken has been for the Mobile Service to cease by the end of February next year, with work beginning on the roll out of alternative services from November onwards, ahead of the decommissioning.

Finally, I know with the cost of living crisis and the pressures of Christmas, it still a difficult time for many people.

I do want people to know that there is support out there. DCC has received funding from Central Government, via the Household Support Fund, to help residents struggling with the cost of living. For this coming winter, Devon’s district and city councils have over £2

million to offer ‘one-off’ financial help to those who are struggling to pay for their food and utility costs or other household essentials. Help may also be available for unexpected or exceptional circumstances, for example rent arrears prior to being in receipt of appropriate housing benefits.

DCC is also working with the Devon Community Foundation to provide grants to voluntary sector organisations supporting communities that don’t always get the help they need. Their ‘Food, Fuel and More’ grant scheme was very well received earlier this year and will re-open this winter with a further funding pot of over £260,000. The scheme will offer large grants of up to £25,000 to organisations that support homeless people or people in temporary or insecure housing.

abulous Freddie, checking in to send festive greetings to everyone. Only a short message this month as I’m busy helping Aunty Lynne put the decorations up - do you know, she has brought a whole tree into the house - not sure what that is all about!

This will be my second Christmas in the house and I am so excited, as I remember last year with all the presents and, of course, the turkey, which is my favourite part. However, I am told I can't have too much and I certainly can't have any chocolate or mince pies, as they are poisonous to us woofs. Apparently lots of Christmas goodies are poisonous for dogs so do check out our Facebook page for a full list, just to keep us safe.

As the year closes we would like to thank everyone for their support which has helped us rehome over 30 dogs this year, giving them a second chance and a brighter future - including Milo who we mentioned last month, who is now enjoying life in his new home.

Right must dash, lots to do so do have a fantastic Christmas, give your woofs an extra hug and I will be back with you in 2024.

I

t has been a busy period at the council, with work on a new 5-year strategic plan and early discussions around Torridge’s Levelling Up Partnership.

Work continues on Great Torrington’s regeneration board, and Torridge District Council’s Community and Resources committee has approved £10,000 of funding towards the delivery of the regeneration strategy. It has been fantastic to see local business leaders and representatives from different areas in the community making really positive contributions to this process, and hopefully some of the projects identified will make a real impact.

South West Water is a statutory consultee on all planning applications and their usual response is ‘has no objections’. At November’s meeting of Full Council, it was agreed to write to SWW to challenge this approach, given that our area is under intense pressure in terms of water supply and sewage capacity. Councillors want to see investment in this vital infrastructure to accommodate the new housing being built in the district and to go some way towards combatting sewage discharges, which affect our rivers and coastline. Officers are investigating the possibility of appointing an independent organisation to oversee and advise on planning concerning water and sewage.

The 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) runs from November 30th to December 12th. In the face of growing, worrying evidence of climate change impacts, this COP is seen by many as an opportunity for countries worldwide to commit to making significant reductions in their carbon emissions. In Torrington, the Climate Changing Room project is developing a local facility to help people adapt to climate and environmental change. Rolle Canal Society Project Report - Rosemoor Site June – October 2023 ur work at Rosemoor continued on two main fronts over the summer months: the ongoing restoration of the tucking mill and repairs to the west wall of the lime kiln.

Great progress has been made on the tucking mill, to the point where the restoration has advanced as far as we can realistically take it. We spent the first weeks of June repairing the damaged sections of the cobbled floor.

This required going back to our pile of ‘rejected’ stone to find stones of the right shape and size. Fortunately, we still had a reasonable cache of such material which just goes to prove the old adage that you should never throw out old rubbish – you never know when you might need it! The floor of the mill is a real puzzle, with part laid in concrete, part in brick and part in cobblestones.

We think this may reflect the ways in which different parts of the building were used. It is probable that a substantial part of the building was given over to living accommodation for the miller and his family. With the structure of the building now reasonably secure, we would eventually like to re-instate some of the old water wheel machinery which we unearthed when excavating the site.

This would help to show how the tucking machinery operated when the mill was in use but is a task for another day.

We have also made steady progress with the re-build of the lime kiln although this was slightly delayed while we waited for the scaffolding to be raised. We are

now working at the very top of the wall, which makes the job of hauling stone and cement up to the working level quite strenuous. After many weeks of practice, our volunteers have got this down to a fine art although there is some dispute as to how equitably the work is divided! We have now repaired about 50% of the damaged wall and aim to complete the re-build within the next month.

We then intend to reconstruct the adjacent corner of the kiln, as this will be necessary to tie in the stonework and make the structure secure. It has taken many months of painstaking work to get this far, but we hope that our efforts will preserve this important part of our industrial heritage for many years to come.

Although the main focus of our work has been on the Rosemoor site, we continue to maintain other parts of the canal as best we can. In late June we spent some time at Furzebeam clearing invasive vegetation along the towpath and in the canal bed. We also replaced some of the damaged netting on the wooden footbridges at the tow path diversion. We had received a few complaints that dogs were friends appreciate the improvement! snagging their paws on broken wire, so Tony Nicholls we removed the old netting completely and laid new. Hopefully, our canine

Torrington – a Special Town

Part 7 May Fair nother traditional and popular event that makes Torrington special is the annual May Fair. A fair was said to have been held in Torrington from at least 1220, and the right to hold fairs in the town was confirmed by Royal Charter in 1554. It was not until after 1873 that the first Thursday in May was set as the opening day of the fair and by this time traditions were long-established.

In the early days there was also a cattle market with animals penned in New Street. Men, women and children came into town from the surrounding villages on horseback and on foot. The main streets were lined with stalls selling a variety of wares. On Barley Grove, the pleasure fair offered peep shows, boxing booths, shooting galleries and a variety of entertainments.

At night, with flaring lights and a din from gongs, drums and trumpets, the excitement reached its climax.

The fair almost disappeared in the late 1880s, although the proclamation was still read from the window of the Town Hall. In 1924 an effort was made to revive the May Fair which has continued in much the same way ever since, except during the Second World War and, recently, for two years during Covid 19.

On May Fair Day the Torrington Silver Band plays around the town first thing in the morning and at 9am the bells ring out from the church of St Michael and All Angels. A banner declaring ‘Uz be plaised to zee ’ee’ welcomes people to the town square, where there is singing followed by country dancing by primary school children and floral dancing that everyone can join in. There is music and entertainment from local groups of singers and dancers, including the Cavaliers, and then at midday there is the proclamation of May Fair by the Town Clerk and the crowning of the May Queen. She parades up the square to the band’s rendering of ‘Early One Morning’ accompanied by her two

Heralds and followed by eight younger Attendants, with the Crowner bringing up the rear bearing the crown on an elaborate cushion. Their costumes always have a theme commemorating a national event.

When the crowned May Queen is seated on her throne, children from the junior school dance around two maypoles decorated with yellow gorse collected from the commons, one at each end of the square. They perform three dances, ‘The Spider’s Webb’, ‘The Plait’ and ‘The Barber’s Pole’. After the first one, the May Queen and her entourage are presented to the Mayor and his/her consort who are standing on a dais alongside the Town Hall with other local VIPs. When the final dance is completed, the ribbons are wound once again round the maypoles and the children gather in pairs for the skip-off all around the square and out into South Street. (There is always a plimsoll or two left behind!).

There’s more music, singing, dancing and games in the square during the afternoon and the Torridge Cup Final is played at the Vicarage Field in the evening. The amusement fair is on Barley Grove car park all week. In the early 1990s, the two Deputy Heads at GTS would meet at 2pm for a couple of rides on the dodgems and face a pounding by pupils! Great fun!

This outreach service is available around the towns and villages of West Devon and Torridge on a regular timetable, offering a free, confidential, and impartial service for people with a hearing and/or sight loss.

Families, carers, neighbours, friends and professionals are also welcome to come and see us.

What does the Sensory Outreach Service offer?

From Your Deputy Mayor…

F

irstly, I will introduce myself, my name is Phil Cloke, and I am honoured to be our town's Deputy Mayor. I moved to Great Torrington from Bude some 45 years ago to take up a teaching post at the old White's Lane Primary School and then was one of the original staff at the then-new Junior School on Borough Road. Once settled in the town I became a member of Torrington Amateur Athletics Club, I also played a few games for Torrington Rugby Club in the days of its formation. On a less active note, I was a founder-member of the Torrington Players theatre group so, many of you may already know me. I have been busy over the past few weeks representing the town in my new role as Deputy Mayor of Great Torrington.

Recently I was given the opportunity to receive both the Winter Flu and Covid booster vaccinations, we are very fortunate to be able to access these locally, rather than having to travel. My thanks go to those responsible at both our Health Centres and pharmacy for an excellent service, I believe vaccines will be offered at the Town Hall in the future, so do look out for announcements.

I would like to say what an amazing event “Dig the Castle" proved to be! The

planning, which took five years, and the organisation of the excavation was second to none. I understand that some wonderful artefacts were found and much else uncovered.

Once identified and documented some will be displayed in our ever growing and splendid museum. This, along with a greater knowledge and understanding of the history of the Castle, will certainly add to our town's fine heritage. Also, to see so many local volunteers, and school pupils taking part in this excavation speaks volumes of our fantastic community spirit. But of course, these things don't just happen. Therefore, a huge thank you must be given to Emily Wapshott, and John Eeles, amongst others from the Futures Group, who planned and managed this event, along

with a team of expert archaeologists, and an army of enthusiastic local helpers, who made this such a brilliant event.

The weekend of Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th of October was a very hectic one in our town. On Saturday I attended the Torrington Silver Band Autumn Concert in the wonderful Howe Concert Hall. The event was a fitting celebration of our town's band, and we are very fortunate to have them. They were back in action the following day supporting another event at St. Michael and All Angels Church, for the Dedication of a new Standard to our town's branch of the Royal British Legion. The old Standard will eventually be re-housed and put on display in the museum. As I write this, we look forward to seeing it being paraded at the annual Remembrance Day service.

Sunday November 19th marked International Men's Day. Obviously, there are many facets relating to this day, but I would just like to focus on one: that relating to men's health. I was born and grew up at a time when it was

N TOWN COUNCIL NEWS the expected ‘norm’ for men to ‘keep a stiff upper lip’. When talking about their fears, difficulties and problems, be they physical or emotional, was considered a weakness. Thank goodness such attitudes have changed and continue to change. It is a strength, not a weakness, to be able to talk about one's problems and concerns. Bearing this in mind our Council has organised some coasters and produced some flyers which will be distributed around the town as a reminder of this, and signposting to services which can provide support to those who need it.

The festive season is now upon us.

Keep an eye out in the windows of local businesses for the return of the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ which this year will take place in the Pannier Market, plus there will be a Window Dressing Competition throughout the town’s shops. I also look forward to seeing the community come together on Saturday December 2nd for the Christmas lights switch-on: this year we will welcome the band and choir from Great Torrington School, and the children of Bluecoat Primary in our lantern parade.

orridge District Council has confirmed the ‘small businesses free parking day’ across all Torridge District Council car parks, will be on Saturday 9th December, therefore parking will be free in both Sydney House and Barley Grove car parks in Great Torrington on this day.

Great Torrington Town Council has ten hours remaining of its allocated free parking allowance for 2023. Members have agreed to use these hours in Sydney House Car Park during popular retail hours between 9am and 12pm on Saturdays during December.

This means that parking in Sydney House car park will be free from 9am until 12 midday on those Saturdays, and remember, it is already free from 12 midday every week!

Christmas is Coming & the Scammers are at Large!

“I mostly shop online and I’m always looking for a bargain especially at this time of year.

However, I’m worried about scammers; what do I look for to avoid getting caught?”

More and more of us are shopping online – it’s convenient and can save a lot of time. However, scammers are getting increasingly sophisticated with their tactics which can make them hard to spot. What you can do, though, is take steps to protect yourself.

The golden rule is that if it seems too good to be true it probably is. This goes for products that are ‘must haves’, are sold out at major retailers or are heavily discounted.

If you’re buying from a site you haven’t used before, do some research first.

See what the company’s returns and refunds policy is and look up the company’s address which should be displayed on their website and make sure it is a street address and not a PO Box. Read reviews, not just the ones on their website but check out other review sites.

Be wary of people contacting you out of the blue on social media or via text and email, and scammers will often ask you to pay in unusual ways like sending money through a transfer service such as MoneyGram or Western Union, or even pay via vouchers. They may well put you under pressure to buy quickly; take your own time.

Scammers are clever and sneaky and regularly adapt making them harder to spot. Anyone can get scammed so if you do get caught don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed. Rather, get practical; report it either to Citizens Advice www. citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/scams/reporting-a-scam or to Action Fraud 0300 123 2040 or www.police.uk/advice/advice-and-information/fa/fraud/action-fraud/.

If you have transferred money within the last 24 hours contact the police on 101, but if you feel unsafe use 999 and don’t forget to contact your bank even if more than 24 hours have elapsed.

Wellbeing Tip: When thinking about Christmas, cake must surely be high on most people's list. Personally I don't enjoy artificially sweet, dry or marzipaned cake, so I thought I'd share my take on naturally sweet but sugar free, moist, gluten-free

fruit cake for any occasion. I've made it for weddings, birthdays and Christmas, any sort of celebration really, and it goes down an absolute storm! The cake keeps well if it gets the chance to do so.

Mary's Scrummy Fruit Cake (Grain, flour, gluten, milk, egg and sugar free!)

I use organic ingredients, all available from OWBG. Of course you can vary the fruit combinations according to your taste; I just found after much experimentation that we liked this combo best. I would avoid any fruit that's likely to give a mushy texture when cooked, such as dates, figs, mulberries and mango. I choose to use odourless coconut oil that's been gently steamed to remove the coconut flavour, but does so without damaging the oil. Coconut is a strong flavour and not everyone likes everything tasting of it. Using the odourless variety means we can use it in any dish, savoury or sweet or in baking.

Ingredients: 75g sultanas; 75g currants; 75g sour cherries; 75g chopped apricots; 60ml odourless coconut oil; 2tsp mixed spice; 110g ground almonds; juice and zest of 1 orange; juice and zest of 1 lemon; good pinch sea salt; 4 flax eggs made with the citrus juices (1 flax egg=1 tbsp ground linseed and 3tbsp water or in this case citrus juice); 40g roughly chopped brazil nuts.

Method: Soak the fruit in boiling water for 10 mins but do not oversoak. Drain well.

Sieve almond meal, salt and spice together. Whisk flax eggs and melted coconut oil together. Grease and line a 6" round cake tin, cutting two pieces of parchment paper to cover the top of the cake as well. Add wet ingredients to dry, mix well, adding fruit and nuts in gradually. Spoon into tin, pack down and smooth the top. Cover with the two pieces of parchment you cut out. Bake for 1hr 15 mins at gas 4 in the middle of the oven. Allow to cool completely in the tin before removing. Wrap and store in an airtight tin for 24 hrs before eating.

For a 10" round tin, multiply the ingredients by 2.78 and bake at gas mark 2 or 3 in the middle of the oven for 9 hours in total, but reducing to gas mark 1 after 6 hrs. Cool completely, wrap and store as above.

For both sizes of cake, do check the cake and test with a spike thermometer as with different ovens and different tins, the baking time may vary. The above is just to give you an idea.

A relaxing pastime for the winter evenings. ith winter on the way now might be the time to dust off your stamp collection or consider starting one as a relaxing pastime. "Pah!" you might say “surely that’s for old people with lots of money?”

True one of the most valuable stamps ever sold achieved nearly $10 million, but these days you can easily and cheaply collect stamps on sites like eBay and at stamp fairs. You never know, you might come across that rare item that someone else has missed.

This hobby can be as simple or as complex as you decide. Some collectors are happy to just amass as many examples of their chosen subject as they can. Others will dive into the history and politics behind their subject.

Stamps originated in the United Kingdom in 1840, the famous ‘penny black’ being the first issue. With the British present in most parts of the world, perhaps yearning to stay in touch with loved ones or report back about their scientific discoveries or the financial opportunities they had identified, the international post service grew rapidly.

Victorian stamps are not too difficult to find, nor too pricy to collect. It is amazing to think that these tiny fragments of our social lives have survived for over 190 years.

If you want to gently stretch your brain, collecting stamps may be the perfect choice. Why not share and learn by joining Taw & Torridge Stamp Club? Torrington RFC

A

nother Rugby World Cup tournament drew to a close, with South Africa becoming World Champions for a record breaking fourth time. A little bit of trivia for you.

South Africa has won three world cups without scoring a try. Only in the 2019 final against England did they score their first try in a final.

England, against many people’s expectations, including mine, performed very well in reaching the semi-final. Only to lose by a single point to eventual champions South Africa. However, they did win the Bronze Medal play-off game against Argentina to come home a very credible third in the tournament.

Torrington RFC, in the meantime, are trying their hardest against some very stiff opposition. Crediton 2nds came to Donnacroft for the first time in a very long while and treated us to a bit of a thrashing. Winners by 7-64.

Then it was supposed to be the short trip to visit Okehampton. However the injury list and unavailables once more doomed us to having to concede the game, gifting Oke the points.

The two-week break between games gave us much-needed respite and, with some new members arriving to bolster squad numbers, we looked eagerly to Cullompton 2nds paying us a visit.

We didn’t disappoint either. An early lead was soon neutralised with tries coming thick and fast from both sides.

At half time the score was a tight 10-15.

Torri scored another try within minutes of the second half kicking off, giving us the lead once again. Tries were traded from both sides as the half progressed and the game ended with the very

credible score of Torri 31 Cully 37. Two bonus points being very welcome.

Then followed the annual bonfire and firework display laid on by the Torrington Cavaliers. A fine blaze and yet another superb display of pyrotechnics lit up faces and the sky around Donnacroft.

Our veterans’ side had a rare run out against the old foe Bideford vets.

Bideford only just won, but these games are more about the fun element of the game.

The beginnings of a ladies side is meeting each Friday for some fun, throwing a ball around and getting some exercise, whilst having an enjoyable time without too much seriousness.

At the time of going to print, the 1st XV are due to play Tiverton 2nds and then Newton Abbott 2nds visit Donnacroft, before a 2-week break leading us into the pre-Christmas session. A trip to Exeter Athletic on 9th December is followed by a journey to Teignmouth.

The Devon Junior Plate match, which was being played between Torrington and Old Plymouthians and Mannamedians was abandoned following a serious injury to an OPMs player. As there was no practical means of replaying the game, it was decided to award the title to both teams.

Torrington Memory Cafe on Safari

I

n August, the Torrington Memory Cafe members went for a day's adventure. The party spent the day at Woolly Animals, Venton Farm, Winkleigh, enjoying the good weather with alpacas, goats, pigs and other animals. The day included a picnic and interaction with the displays and animals and a lovely time was had by all!

The day was made possible by a kind donation from Gwen Jones and Sue Thomas from Dolton. During the year they have given us £900 from the sale of books of their own poetry. We are a self-supporting group, free to all users, and rely on such generous support to provide refreshments, activities and entertainment. We meet on the second Thursday in the month from 10.30am12.15pm at the Methodist Church. New members, carers and volunteers are always welcome.

This award winning flute and harp duo consisting of Lucy Nolan and Meera Maharaj is in great demand, performing throughout the UK. Meera was a first prize winner in both the Dutch International Flute Competition and the Royal Academy of Music Flute Prize.

Graduating from Oxford University and the Royal Northern College of Music with Distinctions in postgraduate degrees, Lucy was a finalist in the RNCM’s Gold Medal weekend. She was recently invited to perform at the World Harp Congress in Hong Kong and works regularly with orchestras such as the Hallé, Manchester Concert Orchestra and the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

ovember’s meeting saw Peter Hood’s talk on the Great Torrington Climate Hub, set up to inform the community about how we can help combat climate change on a local level. This links in well with the WI national resolution, campaigning for cleaner rivers. The Environment and Rural Affairs group has been busy attending seminars highlighting the roll out of the Climate Crisis and Ecology Bill being passed currently, highlighted by the Zero Hour Group.

December’s meeting saw the interactive evening with Chris Tattershall from Cider Orchard. Christmas cheer and gifts were sampled and purchased and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

On a more serious note, the WI laid its wreath at the war memorial in Little Torrington, with our president Jen Hood reciting ‘In Flanders Fields’, by John McCrae.

The skittles team’s first of many outings to Langtree WI was a close run match, with Little Torrington losing by one ball! Everyone that took part had a great time, and a return match is on the cards soon.

The book club is currently reading ‘Inside the Waves’, by Helen Dunmore, and will meet on the third Monday of the month.

The ladies that lunch are having their Christmas outing to the Bell in Parkham, on 13th December. Our WI birthday lunch will be held at the end of January at the Imperial, Barnstaple.

On a similar theme, the WI served mulled wine and warm mince pies at the Castle Hill Creatives Christmas Fair in Torrington.

Art class has commenced over Zoom now the evenings are darker. With studies into dreams, featuring artists such as Mark Chagall.

Looking forward into the New Year it’s the Devon Federation Quiz, in Barnstaple.

he inclement autumn weather has prevented much work being undertaken around the town, the soil is waterlogged (and so are we!) so we have been unable to plant up, but we have been pruning and tidying up whenever possible.

Fleur’s Gardening Forum Poinsettia

T

he Poinsettia is probably one of the most popular Christmas plants ever cultivated, and which of us has never purchased at least one to create a colourful festive display, or received one as a gift? But what is its history and origins?

Euphorbia pulcherrima is actually a tall growing shrub or tree native to Mexico and parts of central America. The Aztecs used it for medicinal reasons.

Nowadays, much of its natural habitat has been lost but it still thrives along roadside verges and gardens, its scarlet bracts standing out as they do now in our homes during the Christmas period.

First described as a shrub in the early 1800s, E. pulcherrima was named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, a botanist and the first US Minister to Mexico in 1836. He took samples to grow on in his greenhouses in South Carolina and its popularity increased over two centuries; now there are many different variations to be found in our nurseries and shops.

Poinsettia is not hardy enough to grow outdoors in the British Isles, requiring a frost-free environment with no wide temperature fluctuations. In fact, so ‘forced’ are these plants that many rarely survive for more than a few weeks in our homes where, usually, they are thrown out as soon as they start to drop their leaves.

Cultivated forms now come in a range of colourways, from the original scarlet to cream, pink, mauve and some with variegated foliage. The coloured bracts surround the actual, insignificant yellow flowers.

When purchasing Poinsettia check that the leaves are a good dark green with no signs of yellowing or dropping, with the bracts clear of browning. Growth should be bushy and not spindly. They need to be in a light, humid situation, a kitchen or bathroom is best. Water when the compost is dry but do not stand in water, a good soaking every few days is best.

Finally, being a member of the Euphorbia genus, Poinsettia is mildly toxic so take care when handling and wash your hand thoroughly afterwards. Although ingesting the leaves probably won’t kill you, it might make you ill and I am unsure of its effects on pets, so best keep it away from temptation.

Torrington Wells – do you have information? e start this month with a request for help. Long before the North Devon Water Works and well before SWW were invented, Torrington relied on well water. These wells have, with a few exceptions, disappeared. We have been approached by a local resident who has the great idea of opening up one of the wells and making it into a local attraction. To help with this is there anybody out there who can provide us with any information on the old wells: maps, source or locations? Redevelopment of the Old Torrington Creamery

T

he start of the redevelopment of the old Torrington Creamery site began in November, with an 8-10 month long demolition project of the existing structures. The project is being carried out by the Joint Administrators of Waterside Construction Southwest Limited and Valley Estates South West Limited (in Administration), which own the site, with the support of Farm Finance Limited, and assistance of Torridge District Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

The move has been welcomed by the Council, Police and Fire services, who have needed to divert significant resources in recent years dealing with antisocial behaviour on and around the site, which has proved difficult to secure from intruders despite the unsafe state of many of the buildings. Once demolition has been completed, the site is expected to be marketed to secure a developer to deliver a mixed use scheme of housing, retail and public open space.

The old Dairy Crest site has had a chequered history since its production facilities were closed in 1993, and while there have been a number of false starts over the years, there is renewed confidence in the latest proposals. DES Ltd have been engaged to carry out the demolition, which will be carefully planned and phased to safely address the less stable buildings and removal of contaminated materials. As a result, the first phase will involve an environmental clean, after which demolition will reduce the buildings down to ground floor slab level. Phase two will involve further contamination assessments before removal of the ground floor slabs and sub structures. Emergency services and the demolition company are asking for people to keep their distance from the site during demolition to allow the works to be completed in a safe and timely manner.

Ken James – Leader of Torridge District Council said: “I’m really glad that there are now some firm plans to begin the redevelopment of this historically important site in Great Torrington and to ultimately bring forward some much needed local housing. I know it will be very welcome by local residents and blue light services who have had to put up with significant disruption from antisocial behaviour and fly tipping over the years. This has been a real team effort to initiate the demolition and we would like to thank Chris Stevens and Steven Williams of FRP Advisory for their help and committing the necessary resources to enable the project.”

Tarka Valley Railway News

W

e are now well into autumn and, as a consequence of the particularly wet and windy period since early October, our working schedule has been severely restricted.

The arrival of storm Ciaran on November 2nd meant that we took the decision not to open that day - the first time in many months that no work was possible.

Despite these setbacks, when we were offered the permanent loan of a signal box lever frame by the Somerset and Dorset Trust, which was located at Washford, a team recovered it and brought it back to TVR. The frame is identical to the one that used to be at Torrington. It has now been stored in our containers, together with most of the associated components. Although we do not yet have a signal box, the offer was too good to refuse. A start has been made on cleaning up the smaller items.

Notwithstanding the rainy conditions, the shop entrance and area of the Puffing Billy garden has been completely levelled and tarmacked which makes access easier. Elsewhere, rebuilding of the trolley shed will commence when we get a run of fine weather, as we have had a delivery of the wood required to start this project. Brake van roof refurbishment continues but, again, this is very much weather dependent as is clearance of the safe walking route - there remains much to be done.

1st Torrington Scouts

I

t’s been a busy month for Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. Cubs and Beavers went to Rock and Rapid to try bouldering and were faced with some tricky challenges, climbing through some tight gaps and getting across the whole wall. Scouts tried abseiling and climbing and all had a go, even though few were a bit apprehensive about heights, making them feel really proud at the end.

During half term Beavers and Scouts were set an at home challenge. Beavers had to read six books, know how to look after a book and design a bookmark to get their Book Reader badge.

Scouts were asked to complete a badge of their own choosing. This was an opportunity to show us their hobbies and what they enjoy doing outside of Scouting.

After half term Beavers, Cubs and Scouts went to Tarka Pottery, to try their hand at pottery painting. They all had lots of fun and are looking forward to getting the pieces back after they have been fired.

With Halloween in October, we had to carve pumpkins, this was great fun but, messy.

Cubs’ activities have been a variety of crafts: making their own miniature Guy Fawkes figures and bonfire models. They also had to demonstrate and share their knowledge on their favourite sport, gaining their communication badges.

It’s been a pleasure to welcome three new Cubs to the group and they learnt meeting traditions from breaking the flag, standing to attention and saluting Arkela our pack leader. The children are proving to be well mannered, respectful and caring to each other. Great foundations for a strong Cub pack.

All new volunteers have undergone safeguarding training and DBS checks recently. All are first aid trained and ready to share some wisdom and, most importantly, have fun!

As always 1st Torrington is looking for more adult support, this is so we can provide the young people of the area with more opportunities. Pause for Thought

T

wo thousand years ago, history was divided in two by the extraordinary birth of a child, promised centuries before

by Prophets, longed for by faithful believers in God and seen by those who were watching and waiting.

Earth was filled with angels bringing messages of hope to an old priest, a young girl and her betrothed, songs to shepherds out in the fields at midnight and magi looking up to the signs in the skies.

And this is what Christmas is really about. Rushing about buying presents and vast quantities of food, the joys of parties and meeting with family and friends can distract us from the most important thing-that God entered our world to bring love and healing, forgiveness and everlasting life. It’s a time to look back and remember, and to look forward to another promise, that this Jesus will come again, accompanied by myriads of angels, to establish a Kingdom which will have no end.

It’s easy to worry, as so many places in our world are struggling with war, poverty, hunger and fear. What can we do to help, to make a difference, hold on to hope? Compassion, generosity,

working for peace, sharing our treasures, praying and asking God’s blessing on each other and trusting in the ‘glad tidings of great joy’ the angels sang about are a good place to start. And hope in the promised future, on the holy mountain, when swords are beaten into ploughshares and the Prince of Peace reigns.

e have had a busy autumn programme of speakers and have welcomed new members and guests to our meetings.

Members have especially asked for talks about local subjects, and it seems especially appropriate to welcome Antony Jeffries, our speaker on Monday 8th December, who will be tracing the history of the Torrington milk factory.

As I write this, demolition work has just started on the long-time derelict buildings that were once a major employer in Torrington. The site was originally a market garden in the late 19th century and the site of the Rolle Canal Offices. In the 1870s the site was developed as a butter factory and local farmers would deliver their milk in churns and many local people have memories of working in the factory or associated industries. We look forward to welcoming visitors and members to this evening talk, which will include mince pies and clotted cream (sadly not made in Torrington).

We meet at the Methodist Church Hall at the top of Mill Street on the second Monday of the month. Doors open at 7pm for tea, coffee and chat and talks start at 7.30pm. Membership costs £15 per annum and visitors £4 for a visit. Interested in this meeting?

Planning Your Biodiverse Garden

W

inter is a time for planning, so why not start thinking about how you can improve the biodiversity of your garden in the months ahead? Build a pond, create piles of stones and rotting logs, and of course, include lots of plants.

Even in the smallest garden, diversity can be achieved just by having a variety of plants – different heights, flowers throughout the year and those that produce fruit, berries or seed. RHS research has shown that it does not matter which country they come from, just so long as they produce plenty of nectar and pollen (we all know how much butterflies love non-native buddleia!). However, native plants are important for the larvae of many insects, so if you can find room in a sunny corner for nettles, butterflies including red admiral, small tortoiseshell and peacock will be very grateful.

Plants that can provide several key features are of most value. For example, the flowers of crab apples will produce nectar and pollen in spring for insects, fruit in autumn for birds and a canopy for them to sing from. Everything in nature is interconnected, you cannot provide habitat for one type of creature without attracting a whole host of others. Insects are the basis of biodiversity and if you can provide for them, reptiles, amphibians, bats and birds will follow. Before you know it, you have a biodiverse garden!

All gardens have diverse habitats, but you need to plan to optimise the potential of your garden to become a wildlife haven. This involves a bit of research. You need to know what plants will grow in the conditions you can offer, work out the best place to put your pond and find a corner for a log and stone pile. The RHS website (rhs.org. uk) is a mine of information and a good place to start.
