Calf Street Play Area Consultation

T

he Town Council wishes to thank everyone who took part in the consultation. The six most voted items were: 1. A climbing frame; 2. Swings; 3. Nest swing; 4. Ground level trampoline; 5. Slide; 6. A bounce roundabout; 7. We would also look to include a youth shelter, picnic tables and bike racks and lighting. The cost of all that including installation and new safety surfaces will be over £70,000. It won’t happen overnight, but the Town Council will put together bids to try to raise the funds. It is likely to be small amounts from multiple sources. If anyone has an idea of possible funders please email your suggestion to admin@ great-torringtontowncouncil.gov.uk. W

e are still busy planning Great Torrington’s celebration of the Queen‘s 90th Birthday on Sunday 12th June 3-5pm. We hope that the children will be seated for their ‘bring and share’ tea around 3pm, there will be a welcome by the Mayor and the Silver Band will play Happy Birthday as well as other music. From around 3.30pm there will be various activities for the children, which will be organised by Sophie at the Plough and the Army Cadets, who will be providing a climbing wall. There will be face painting, a fancy dress competition, including a prize for the best ‘adult hat’ with a royal theme, and Streetz Dance Company will perform too. If you have any ideas or would like to be involved please ring the Town Council on 01805 626135 or email admin@great-torringtontowncouncil.gov.uk. From Your Mayor…

T

his is the last report for Cathrine Simmons, who is the retiring Mayor, and the first report for Margaret Brown, the new Mayor for Great Torrington. Cathrine really enjoyed her last event – Great Torrington May Fair and Carnival. The weather was fabulous and all the events during the week were well attended as a result. The May Queen and her entourage looked fantastic in red and yellow, following the theme of Shakespeare, but it was not all about May Fair day, there were lots of other activities to attend. It is the role of the Mayor to present cups and prizes for the May Fair Swimming Gala, the Torridgeside Cup and the Round the Tree Race. Awards were also given to the best dressed window, which was won this year by the Soap Kitchen. The Carnival had some humorous floats and some great ideas, this is such a great event to end the week with. Cllr Margaret Brown will have a busy time welcoming the children and their parents for the Queen’s 90th birthday party in the square on Sunday 12th June. Look out for the posters, and elsewhere in the Crier, for more information. Margaret will have many interesting occasions to attend such as the Old English Fayre in South Molton, and the Pretty Maid ceremony in Holsworthy. We wish her a happy year as Mayor and Cathrine is pleased to hand over to these experienced hands. Do not forget to visit the town council website www.great-torringtontowncouncil.gov. uk to see what is going on. Cllr Cathrine Simmons

May Fair a Great Success!

I

would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who worked so hard to make May Fair day such an enjoyable occasion, with the organisation by the May Fair committee, and the Cavaliers, who worked tirelessly to entertain us all. A special pat on the back to Toni Alexander for the design and attention to detail that went into the outfits worn by the May Queen and court; they all looked beautiful and did a very good job. To top it all the weather was fantastic which resulted in the Square being packed all day. A real community spirit, thank you, this is what makes Torrington GREAT TORRINGTON. Daphne Metherell

Round the Tree Race

I

would like to say a huge thank you to all those involved in the event including marshals, timekeepers and other volunteers and well done to all those who ran. As a first, t-shirts were awarded to the finishers. Wear them with pride; they were earned the hard way. As a club, it wasn’t quite the same without Pete Cockwill at the finish helping with the timekeeping, but we wish him well in his continuing recovery and he was with us in our thoughts. Numbers were high again, with lots of local runners participating and thanks should go to the usual suspects at Function Fitness, Torrington Boxing Club, the cadets etc. for your continued support. Also, thank you to all those who turned out to cheer in the runners, you were in good voice. This is another example of how volunteers can come together to put on a fantastic event for the local community, which really does make our town so special. If you were inspired by this year’s race and have thought about running, or perhaps want to start again after a few years out, please join our Facebook page Torrington AAC Running Club to see when our sessions are on. Runners of all abilities, even absolute beginners, are welcome. Thank you again. Michael Newcombe, Torrington AAC

Common News

F

irstly, I would like to thank those who came along to our organised Bluebell Walk on May Bank Holiday. The bluebells appeared early again this year, and we thought they might be past their best, but at the time of writing this we are having the warmest day of the year so far, and they are still out in force together with an abundance of white wild garlic flowers. The Commons really are a great place to be at this time of year, as everything turns to green again.

Tree Trail

We have recently ‘refurbished’ the Tree Trail, so if you like to have a ‘mission’ to your walks on the Commons, take time to follow the special white posts. You will see a specimen of every kind of tree to be found in Britain, and you may also discover parts of the Common you didn’t know existed. With the leaves fully out, the trees are at their best at this time of year. You can obtain a leaflet with a map from the Information Centre at Castle Hill, or print one off from our website – just Google Torrington Common.

Car Boot Sales

Just a reminder that our popular Sunday morning car boot sales are back in full swing, at the Old Bowling Green. Be there every Sunday from 8am (or 7:30 if you’re a seller). I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Cherry Hammon who, with her helpful husband John, keeps our car boots on track – rain or shine! Finally, having been recently elected as Chairman, I was privileged to be invited to join the Mayor’s party in the May Fair parade. I would like to thank the Mayor and May Fair Committee for once again putting on a fantastic spectacle – complete with sunshine all day! On such an occasion I am reminded what a great thing it is to be part of a very warm and welcoming community, and a town that is wrapped around by such a fantastic natural resource in the Commons! Steve Jones, Chairman

What do you know about Dafforn and Son?

W

ell, what many people don’t know is that we are a truly independent funeral director. “No you’re not” I hear you say, “you’re the Co-op”! Yes, up until April 2010, Dafforn was owned by Co-op Funeralcare, but then they were forced by the Office of Fair Trading to sell off two of their North Devon branches Dafforn and Son, and L Clarke and Sons in Braunton. Roger Byrom who worked at Braunton, and provided holiday cover at Dafforns, was able to purchase both branches, ensuring that the funeral homes returned to independent owners. Roger and his wife Paula were joined by Roger’s son three years ago, making it a truly family affair, and with local girl Suzanne Dymond employed in the Dafforn branch. Roger has been in the funeral trade for over 20 years and Chris has just passed the British Institute of Embalmer’s course. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are a local family, serving the local community, with core values for care and compassion. A great story of a corporate company being brought back into a fully independent local business.

Great Torrington School Year 5 Taster Day Thursday 16th June

G

reat Torrington School would like to extend a warm welcome to all our prospective Year 5 pupils and invite you to attend our Year 5 Open Day. The day will provide an opportunity for pupils to become familiar with our caring, high performing school and staff, and give them a taste of what GTS has to offer. All pupils at GTS, regardless of their

none and offers all pupils opportunities to excel beyond what GCSEs can offer. This year for example, pupils have performed the school production at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth; given lectures at Exeter University; built an aeroplane; won UK indoor athletics competitions; become county chess champions; visited six different countries, to mention but a few of the experiences that have truly provided stretch and challenge. Great Torrington School has worked hard to make the transition between primary and secondary schools as smooth and successful as possible for pupils. We hope that you will join us for the day to give your child a chance to experience life at GTS. Please contact the school to book on 01805 623 531 or email reception@gts. devon.sch.uk. Time to Choose a How many schools should you look at?

Even if you have a particular school in mind, it’s a good idea to visit at least three; this will enable you to compare what is available.

Should you visit on an open evening or on a normal school day?

Open evenings are there to show you the school at its best, and do provide a great overview; for deeper insight it’s always a good idea to visit on a normal school day if possible.

Are the pupils well-presented and polite?

Current pupils can tell you a lot about a school. Driving past at the beginning or end of the day can give a good idea about the standards of behaviour.

Exam results ability, thrive. We are delighted to have been awarded the Educational Outcomes Award for 2014 and 2015, for our pupils achieving GCSE results in the top 10% of schools nationally. This year we have been nominated by the Department of Education for the Pupil Premium Awards; one of nine schools nationwide and the only school in the South West. Simply put we are the highest performing school in North Devon. However, at GTS we believe that GCSEs alone do not define the talents and abilities of our pupils. Our enrichment programme is second to

Overall GCSE results are obviously important, but also look at whether schools get a decent percentage of higher grades, it’s a good indication of the teaching quality on offer, and look at the overall progress pupils make from Year 7. Being involved in out-of-school clubs can make a huge difference to the enjoyment of secondary school as well as having benefits for learning. Look at the range of sports activities on offer too - these can differ widely from school to school.

Chulmleigh Community College Year 5 Taster Day Thursday 30th June If you have a child in Year 5, it’s nearly time to choose the secondary school they will move on to next year. Taster days are a great way to check out what is available, so why not give them a go?

Secondary School? Do senior staff know the students as individuals?

It’s a good sign if the head knows the names of the students and is visible during the school day, it means they are interested in them as individuals rather than just results. Pastoral care is very important for the wellbeing of pupils.

C

hulmleigh Community College is an 11-16 traditional rural school, with a reputation for high achievement and standards of conduct. We expect our pupils to follow a rigorous and broad academic curriculum, delivered by excellent teachers, with approximately 90% taking the EBacc combination of GCSEs (English, Maths, two sciences, a modern foreign language as well as History or Geography). Most of our children leave with 11 GCSEs and the average grade at GCSE in 2015 was a B. 25% of all

What does your child think of the school?

Although it’s not the best idea to let your child make the decision about which school to attend, as often it will simply be where their friends are going, it’s important to include them in the discussion and take their views on board; remember, they will make friends anywhere!

Does the school match your child’s needs?

Consider your child’s strengths and interests. Some secondary schools specialise in particular areas of the curriculum and this could help with your decision. Think about your child’s character and the character of the school in question: do the two ’match’, or are there aspects of the school that your child may find difficult?

Most importantly…

The most important thing is to remember is that you have a choice, schools need to attract children. So ask questions; staff should be keen to respond to your queries and concerns. If they don’t appear to be, will you feel able to share your concerns later?

GCSE grades achieved were A* or A grade. Results and academic standards are an important part of any parent’s choice of school. At Chulmleigh Community College in 2015, 77% of our students gained 5 A*-C including English and Maths. We were delighted to attain the best EBacc GCSE results in North Devon, achieving results beyond those of all local state and private schools.

The College is a happy school, with highly focussed students and staff. Outside the classroom, we have very successful sports teams, opportunities to take part in The Duke of Edinburgh and Ten Tors challenges,

drama productions, music productions, debating clubs, a French Exchange (with a French Partner school) and a very wide variety of opportunities. Our Peer Parliament ensures that the pupil voice is heard clearly at the school, and there are a wide variety of opportunities for further participation as pupil mentors, prefects and through our Junior Leadership Team in Year 11. We have recently upgraded our facilities significantly, and have been one of the only schools in the country to get funding for a new, ‘state of the art’ school. We have very modern facilities. We believe that we should provide every opportunity for our children to flourish, both academically and personally. If you are interested in taking a look at what we have to offer, we have a Year 5 Taster Day on 30th June. Alternatively, please contact the College to make an appointment to have a look around. Furthermore, as a result of parental demand, we are now running transport to Chulmleigh Community College, with pick up points at Torrington, Beaford and Dolton. Call the College on 01769 580215, email: admin@chulmleigh.devon.sch.uk, visit: www.chulmleigh.devon.sch.uk.

What are the Great Torrington Almshouse, Town Lands and Poors Charities?

T

hese charities originated in the 17th century from benefactions by the great and good of Torrington. Over the centuries, public-spirited people have given some of their private fortunes to be used for the benefit of those in need of help. By 1970 the number of charities involved had increased to 22, but in 1971 these were reduced to three by amalgamation. The Trustees’ ‘Bible’ is a manual entitled ‘A Scheme’ (1971) which instructs how the Trusts and Trustees are to operate. There are 15 people on the present Board of Trustees: the vicar of the parish church (ex officio), four representatives of the Town Council who are appointed for four years, and ten other co-opted Trustees who are appointed for five years. The criterion for being a Trustee is to have a specific knowledge of, or interest in, Torrington, and candidates are suggested by the existing Board of Trustees. Their suitability is then debated and they are selected by the Board. The Trustees meet monthly to determine all matters. They have contact with the Town Council but operate entirely independently. They are responsible for a considerable amount of investment in the stock market and in property. The Trust owns around 40 properties in the town, both commercial and domestic, as well as several acres of land. The accounts of the Trust are very complicated and are audited by chartered accountants, for ultimate approval by the Charity Commission. Torrington people are favoured when it comes to choosing tenants for the many properties owned by the Trust, including the eight almshouse flats in New Street, which recently underwent a £300,000 refurbishment. On the second Friday in December each year, there is an annual distribution of the fund for the sick and aged at the Plough Arts Centre. In excess of 500 people attend, and in 2015 those who were eligible received £15 per household. The Trustees receive many requests for funding. These are all considered with the circumstances of the individual being taken into account. Grants totalling up to £60,000 are given annually, to various organisations in the town, for upkeep and maintenance, such as the parish church, the town hall, the Plough, the town band, scouts, guides, playgroups, chapels, etc. As well as giving aid to the elderly who are struggling financially, help is also sometimes given to young people for educational or training purposes. Chris Styles was Steward and Receiver for the Trust for over 40 years, in charge of the day-to-day management of all affairs with direct responsibility to the Trustees until his death in 2012. When I spoke to him, I suggested that it must be very rewarding to be able to distribute largesse to deserving local people and causes. He agreed that they derive great satisfaction from doing good for the town, and that the Trust is like local government used to be, ‘compassionate and people-orientated’. Ian Newman is now Steward to the Trustees. Moira Brewer, an extract from Torrington Uncovered

M

y name is Alice Hayward and along with Trinity Hickford and Chloe Brown, we are organising a charity music festival as part of our music GCSE. Our festival is called ‘GTS in the Park’ and will be on the 7th of July at our school, GTS. It will start at 6pm and end toward 8pm. There will be a couple of stages, each with a different art genre, that the public can come and watch. The fee to get into our festival will be £3 adult, £2 child and refreshments will be on offer from our caterer Yucel’s Snack Bar. We will have an abundance of acts on offer with a range of talents, ranging from music to comedic stand up. Everyone is welcome to a night you will remember!

Thomas Fowler - Torrington’s Forgotten Genius Plough Arts Centre Saturday 25th June, 3pm All are welcome to this free event

F

ew people know that Thomas Fowler, one of the original pioneers of the computer, developed his ideas on our doorstep 175 years ago. In this hour-long presentation, Pamela Vass tells the story of this remarkable Torrington man. His exceptional intelligence was obvious from the start, but he was entirely self-taught, studying alone by night while working as a fellmonger by day. He carved a life for himself and his family - including eleven children - within Torrington, becoming a businessman, bank manager, councillor, church organist, Poor Law Treasurer, Inspector of Weights and Measures and much more besides. But it was his flair for invention that makes this story so remarkable. He designed and built his own printing press, patented a system for circulating hot water, still used in central heating systems today and, most significantly, revealed a blueprint for a radical new approach to calculation that was a century

ahead of its time. But it was a blueprint that challenged the accepted wisdom of the day; a controversial enough offering from a member of the academic elite, let alone a sixty-two year old tradesman from the far south-west of England. But this charismatic, stubborn, principled man was determined to succeed despite his humble origins and unorthodox path to mathematical brilliance. In her talk, Pamela reveals Thomas Fowler’s resilience and ingenuity in the face of professional prejudice, betrayal and heartbreaking twists of fate as he fought for recognition for an invention he believed would be his greatest claim to fame. ‘Computers might have changed history and our world almost a century sooner than they did had the ideas of Fowler been understood and adopted…’ Ralph Merkle. Fowler’s story is told in Pamela’s latest book, ’The Power of Three’. For more information see: www.boundstonebooks. co.uk

Celebrations for Abbeyfield Glen Tor Residents

G

len Tor residents, this year celebrating the 30th anniversary of the opening of the house, enjoyed a V.I.P supper, attended by the Mayor and Dr Harry Cramp, one of the first trustees. They are looking forward to the BBQ in June, and the summer Fete on August 20th, in the garden of Glen Tor. We enjoyed the visit of the May Queen and her entourage, and viewing the flower displays in St Michael’s Church. Our next outing is to the Flower Festival in Crediton Parish Church on June 7th. If you think that you, or a loved one, would like to find out more about living here, why not ring our housekeeper on 01805 623605 for a chat and perhaps arrange a visit to meet the staff and residents.

Life-Saving Equipment Comes to Torrington

T

orrington has been provided with two defibrillators, for use by the community, to save lives in the event of an emergency. The units, funded by Torrington Town Council, The local Rotary Club, Torridge District Council and Cllr Andy Boyd, are positioned in two separate areas of the town, one at the fire station on Calf Street and one at the museum, next to the market entrance on South Street. The locations were chosen as they are easily accessible, and the fully automated system means that when someone calls 999, the ambulance control room staff will identify where the nearest defibrillator is and guide the caller to it, 24 hours a day. Station Manager Graham Rooke, of Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, said: “It is great to be involved in this community resource that will save lives. Having two in place means that at least one will be close at hand at all times, and every second is precious in an emergency. This is a machine which can be used by anyone, because as soon as you turn it on it will talk to you, and guide you through the procedure.” Annual two-hour sessions will be held for people living in the town to learn about how to use defibrillators and conducting CPR. Anyone interested in attending can call George Gwyn on 07977 469 567. The agencies would also like to thank local electrician John McPake, who installed the defibrillators.

June Films at The Plough

O

ur June films start with one of the year’s best children’s films: Zootropolis, in the second part of half term. As a new departure, we are showing the film of a brilliant Matthew Bourne dance production based on Carmen: The Car Man. With a special price tag! There will be a great selection of current films: The one-take sensation Victoria, filmed in Berlin but mostly in English; Cold War thriller, Despite the Falling Snow; Golden Years, with pensioners fighting back, featuring a cast of well-loved older British actors; the acclaimed Florence Foster Jenkins, with Meryl Streep playing the New York heiress who dreamed of becoming an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice; two musician biopics: Miles Ahead starring Don Cheadle as Miles Davis and I Saw the Light with Tom Hiddleston playing Hank Williams – and he can sing too; Captain America: Civil War; John le Carré adaptation, Our Kind of Traitor starring Ewan McGregor and Naomie Harris. For the connoisseurs we have the new Terrence Malick film Knight of Cups; Peter Greenaway’s Eisenstein in Guanajuato; Ben Rivers’ much praised The Sky Trembles and the Earth is Afraid and the Two Eyes Are Not Brothers and Hitchcock Truffaut. A French film about a Tamil freedom fighter who finds refuge in Paris, Dheepan and an Italian comedy Loro Chi? (Them Who?) bookend the month. Please pick up a flier at The Plough, the TIC or the library.

Pause For Thought

Traditions: Not many of us seem to escape having some traditions, whether in our families or in the community. Torrington May Fair is one prime example of tradition being handed down over many generations. When our daughters were young we always had a tea trolley which was loaded with goodies for Christmas. Once the trolley got put in the back shed, but when the girls came home the following Christmas they said where is the trolley? They found it, cleaned it up, and loaded it up with goodies, saying ‘it’s tradition’. As Christians it is very easy to become traditionalist, doing the same things, never changing anything. When we were planning our new church fellowship in Torrington, it was decided to have a 4pm service; my first thoughts were, what will I do on a Sunday morning? I’ve been going to church on a Sunday morning for years, but I am quite enjoying it; no rushing around but a relaxed time, it gives me a time to unwind. I believe in keeping Sunday special, setting aside a time to worship the King of Kings, to come into His presence with a body of like-minded people, to rejoice in the fact that I am special to Him. Letting go of tradition can be quite a challenge it can become bondage, preventing us from doing what God really has planned. I don’t know who this is speaking too, but if some sort of tradition is preventing you from knowing who God is, preventing you from worshipping Him, preventing you from having that personal relationship through Jesus, then breaking with that tradition may be the answer. Torrington Police Amateur Boxing Club Fight Wins in Weymouth & Bristol!

O

n Saturday 16th April, Torrington Police Amateur Boxing Club took 14 year olds Charlie Golder, Nathan Board and Matt Gray to box in Weymouth. Golder had a skills bout, boxed well and gained a lot of valuable experience. Board won his bout unanimously; Matt Gray lost on a split decision in a really close fight and used his backhand well against a plucky southpaw. Excellent effort from everyone, well done. On Sunday 17th April, Fergus McLean (age 14) went to Downend Boxing Club, Bristol, to take on a heavier opponent. He started very strong, putting his opponent on the canvas, going forward throughout the first round. In the second round the referee gave his opponent a standing 8 and immediately afterwards stopped the bout as his opponent could not continue. Fantastic Fergus, well done! On Saturday 23rd April, Ned Pettifer gained further experience in a skills bout in Paington. His work rate and range of punches ensured he controlled the three rounds. On Friday 6th May, many of our boxers took part in the ‘round the tree race’, well done to: George Wafforne Lock, Nicole Wafforne Lock, Ned Pettifer, Finlay Mathers, Charlie Golder, Nathan Board, Trai Sheperd, Matt Gray, Hermione Pettifer, Hannah Hutchings, Jodie Quick, Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Ryan Dunn, Jake Wright, Archie Smithson, Tom Hutchings and coach Heath Pettifer. Many beat their personal bests; some were running it for the first time, and everyone did the club proud, well done. Special congratulations to Trai Shepherd who came first in his age category. The boxfit ladies are looking forward to next month’s Ruby Run and are entering a team into the relay race. Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin

Weare Giffard Community Orchard is Blossoming!

T

he orchard is blossoming! The first tree to blossom was the Crab Apple (there to help pollination), and now the rest are following. In addition the new willow hedge running along the treatment works fence is doing exceedingly well, and in just a year or so, will completely screen this building from the orchard. We have two seats for the orchard; a double bench seat fixed to three willow tree stumps and a bench to be placed in memory of a tree donor’s spouse. Mowing continues with a rota of one donor each half month. We have had our first ‘booking’; Bideford Sustainable Group had a May Day picnic on site, including a talk on the orchard – they were extremely impressed with our efforts. Would you like to try making a mosaic? A call to all children (and adults!!). Each of the six apple tree rows has been named after birds, animals and flowers of Weare Giffard and will be marked by a mosaic ‘header’ stone. We will be creating the mosaics over the weekend of Saturday June 25th, Sunday June 26th, on site. We would like as many children to be involved as possible, supervised by interested adults, whether parents or other tree donors, so ALL are welcome. Further information from Keith Hughes 01237 475168 or Sue Frost 01237 477579. The orchard’s progress can be followed on Facebook: www.facebook. com/wearegiffardcommunityorchard, by paying it a visit; or call 01237 475168. Keith Hughes

Torrington Rugby Club Devon Junior Cup Winners!

A

fantastic day was had by everyone on Saturday 30 April! The final result of 24-15 was closely followed by the popping of corks, celebrating the biggest cup win by a TRFC side. The weather was also kind to us, which along with the free buffet being on offer, encouraged even more to turn out and cheer our boys on to winning the above cup, for the first time ever. Being fortunate to hold the final at Donnacroft just helped the whole experience; a brilliant sunny day showcasing what Torrington can put on, suitably impressing most attendees, especially the Devon RFU contingent. I am reliably informed it was the largest crowd seen at Donnacroft; if not ever, certainly for many years. The game itself was only made better by our opponents, North Tawton, displaying a very competitive game plan which made sure that our boys had to play well to win; some of our players had the best games I’ve ever seen them play individually, as well as being supported by the whole 22 player squad. Everyone, including various other helpers, supporters, coaches and committee were all driving towards the same goal for TRFC; a massive thank you to all who have helped during this season, during which TRFC has taken a massive step forwards, thank you. Dates for your diaries:Quiz night – June 10th at Donnacroft clubhouse. AGM – June 17th at Donnacroft clubhouse, 8pm. Clubhouse clean-up day – June 18th If anyone would like to become involved on or off the pitch, please contact me on the details below. You can hire our facilities for various purposes or sponsor us in a variety of ways, all help is, as always, greatly appreciated. C’mon Torrie. Coast to Coast Choir Verdi Requiem

Sunday 3rd July 3pm, Pannier Market Barnstaple

N

orth Devon Choral Society teams with South Devon Choir and Bude Choral Society for a spectacular performance of Verdi’s Requiem, with more than 200 singers, a large orchestra and internationally renowned professional soloists, Cheryl Brendish, Heloise West, David Webb and Darren Jeffery. The concert will be conducted by John Hobbs, who is Music Director of all three choirs. Barnstaple Pannier Market will be transformed into a huge concert hall for a large audience. This is a rare opportunity to hear this wonderful work in live performance in North Devon, as it is rarely performed here due to the large numbers of singers required by Verdi, and the heavy costs involved. With its dramatic fanfares and the terrifying percussion of the Dies Irae, the rafters of Barnstaple Pannier Market will be ringing. North Devon Choral Society is grateful for the generous support received through grants from the Barum Bridge Trust and from the North Devon Council Community Councillor Grants scheme. Tickets are £15, children and students free, available from: Barnstaple: Tarka Books, Bear Street; Bideford: Walter Henry’s Bookshop; Great Torrington: Sheena’s Sweetshop, Pannier Market; from Choir Members, at the door, or 01805 628262. www.northdevonchoral. org.uk. Parkinson’s Day in Torrington Rotary Youth Leadership Award 2016 Age 16-18? You have the chance to attend a ‘A Real Success’ round 140 people attended a one week residential adventure course!

Parkinson’s Day at Torrington Hospital Health and Wellbeing

Hub. The event – a partnership between the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and the Torridge branch of Parkinson’s UK – was designed to raise awareness of the condition and showcase the wide range of services and support available locally for patients, families, friends and carers. People were able to drop in between 10am-4pm, and speak to a variety of experts involved in the care of local Parkinson’s patients. Lynn Gill, Parkinson’s nurse specialist for the Trust, said: “The day was a real success, with approximately 140 people attending. Patients and their carers, family and friends said it was an amazing day and that it was so helpful to be able to talk to the professional they wanted to. I would like to thank the Torridge branch of Parkinson’s UK for their invaluable help in organising the event and making it such a success.” There were tai chi and dancing sessions as well as singing from the Torridge Shanty Group, which many people enjoyed and joined in with. A free park and ride service ran from Torrington Rugby Club, to make it as easy as possible for people to attend. The event was held on the first day of Parkinson’s Awareness Week 2016. Due to its success, it will now become an annual event. Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust

E

ach year the Rotary Club of Torrington sponsors a student to attend a one week residential course, which is aimed at improving their leadership skills. Adventure Okehampton will be hosting the 10th course at YHA Bracken Tor between 16th and 22nd July 2016. It’s no small feat to complete this course, as the week is packed full of activities, talks and leadership exercises. The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a challenging programme, and therefore it has both national and international recognition. It provides a unique opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills and self-confidence, under the guidance of business professionals, Rotarians and adventure instructors. All the many youngsters that Torrington Rotary has sponsored in the past have said that it was a life changing experience for them. Attending the course certainly added positively to their CV. Applications for Rotary Club fto attend this year’s course are welcomed from young people in the Torrington area, between the ages of 16-18 years, who have the talent, energy and motivation to benefit from this programme. It is open to all young people, whether a student or in work, and the RYLA experience provides a fantastic opportunity to learn, grow, have fun and make new friends. The successful candidate will be sponsored for the course following an interview, which will be arranged for those completing the application form, available from Linda Facey on the following email address: ian.facey@hotmail.com. or downloaded directly from our FaceBook page “Rotary Club of Torrington”

together like pancakes. The coastline brilliant in the morning sun with its chalky white ribbon of cliffs, jagged and folded, shrinking into the distance. Rumbles emanate from the ground and the waves, rocks are hurled at the walls of Britain with the force of grenades against a bunker as those minions of Poseidon clamber up the cliff

“Like the wrath of Poseidon is fighting an army of Roman soldiers forming a wall with their shields to beat back the sheer power of the waves.” face eager to reach the ridge to greet the coming earth. The wave-cut platform of mother earth dangles from the ridge of the cliffs, the orange line of cord bright against the dark rocks of the wall, the life-line many sailors fear they may need in order to survive the icy embrace of Death’s will. Rusted iron rocks have riddled the beach like waterfalls of wine, a gift from Bacchus, with a smell of a salty yet earthy air about them. Broken and shattered like the ships before them as they lost their way and their lives to the ridges of the beach. The voices of drowned sailors whistles through the air in a scream as light as a breeze to the strength of a tornado. Like a baby crawling to the warm embrace of its mother’s arms, the waves roll back and forth from the gritty shore. The coastline is entirely barren. The grey rock beach leads up to a metallic-looking wall the colour of smoke. There is no vegetation to be seen, no sign of life and no way up the vertical rock face. The expanse of unwelcoming grey stretches far in front and far behind, like an ocean of stone. Inside the havens of colour the

seashells are truly iridescent, shining with the colours of the ocean. Blues swirled with greens and shine prettily in the early morning sun. Shaped like a whipped ice-cream piled onto an invisible cone, flecked like paint across a canvas: ridged, bumpy, generous swooping curves, pearlescent inside. A perfect home for a passing hermit crab; before the sea comes to sweep them and mingle them. What a cascade of idyllic concoctions of shades dropping on the shores and what a plethora of colours; yet with the rising tide they are thrown up towards the cliff then dragged down to the murky depths of Poseidon’s domain. Fluffy white foamy crests of the crashing waves are the only sound other than the cry of the gulls. The flat sea stretched in all directions, the afternoon sun scattering diamonds across its surface. Seagulls wheel overhead,

“I could stay all day were it not for the rumbling of my stomach and the aroma of fried fish wafting down from atop the ledge.” carried by the cool ocean breeze. The water moves softly around outstretched fingers, caressing coolly, eddying in its wake. I pull my hand out and watch the drips, transparent, shifting to opaque... They fall as if snatched by gravity to the sea below, each one swiftly haloed by ever-growing rings, distorting the pebbled sea-bed. In the breeze my hand is cold, yet my back is warmed by the early summer sun. I could stay all day were it not for the rumbling of my stomach and the aroma of fried fish wafting down from atop the ledge.

GTS Science visit the Birmingham Big Bang Science Fair.

O

It Went With a Bang!

n Friday 18th March, a group of pupils from GTS visited The Big Bang Science Fair in Birmingham. It was amazing. To start with we saw a stand-up show about science facts which was really funny. We then split into smaller groups and looked around. We battled robots and saw other robots categorise things; we watched mobile technology make popcorn, learned how to make fake blood and watched a show about special effects and how they are used in films. It was a long journey and a long day, but immense fun. By Lewis Holt, Year 8

I can’t sleep

Sometimes at night, I can’t sleep… The voices, loud and distracting Scream. Shout. Won’t let go. Sometimes at night, I can’t sleep… So quiet. So dead. My mind won’t stop. Paranoia. Insomnia. Plague my conscious mind. Sometimes at night, I can’t sleep… The fear and pain take control, Clutching with their cold desperate hands. And sometimes at night. I can sleep… But it is no escape. No relief. The voices. The quiet. The fear. They follow me. Into the dark. Lauren Gater-Morey, Year 11

We are then vaccinated, microchipped and neutered, which costs a lot – vaccinations alone cost nearly £60 and on average neutering is £200. Our volunteers do a fantastic job, constantly raising money for the rescue and are the K9 heroes! Please follow us on Facebook, www. facebook.com/K9focus, to see all the new inmates and, of course, you can always catch Aunty Lynne on The Voice Radio every first Wednesday of the month, around 9.15am. Dog of the Month

My name is Daisy and sadly I was abandoned and ended up in the Local Authority pound. I am only 18 months old and yet if K9focus hadn’t rescued me I would have been put down. I am now in some lovely kennels waiting to adopt a new family. I am a lovely, bouncy girl who loves everything – especially cuddles and toys. Apparently I am a GSD X Collie X Staffy, and therefore very bright and loving, but would like a family to take me on nice walks and continue with my training, although I am a very good girl! All the volunteers who take me out love me, and would take me home if they didn’t have dogs of their own!

Torrington-Roscoff Exchange Group Visit a Great Success!

M

ay Fair saw the arrival in Torrington of an exchange party from Roscoff, in Brittany. After arriving late Wednesday night, 4th May, our French friends were up bright and breezy early on the Thursday morning ready for their traditional ‘full English’ laid on by Bev and her team at The Black Horse. Committee Chairman, Nick Roberts, provided copies of the MayFair program, donated by Cathrine Simmons, to the French families. Laurence Mahe introduced herself to the vicar, Rev. Peter Bevan, by asking him if he was real! When Peter asked why, she responded that a lot of people were dressed up that day... After breakfast, Mayor Cathrine Simmons welcomed the Roscoff group at The Plough Arts Centre before they dispersed to enjoy the festivities in the square outside. After spending the next day with their host families, the Bretons joined other exchange group supporters for an excellent meal at the Black Horse on Friday evening, after which they attended a concert at The Plough Arts Centre, featuring singer songwriters Tom Robinson (2-4-6-8 Motorway, War Baby) and the promising Lee Forsyth Griffiths. On Saturday, around 45 British and French friends toured Hartland Abbey and gardens, many of them walking down through the grounds to the beach after lunch and returning to the Old Kitchen café for a cream tea. A spell of fine weather contributed to the success of the exchange, which has seen a growth in membership in recent months and goes from strength-to -strength.
