irstly may I apologise for the incorrect report in the June edition of the Crier that Mario Magarotto was retiring from his post as Mace Bearer. I am very pleased to say that Mario will not be retiring from this role!

The months of June and July have been very busy for me, representing Great Torrington at many varied events.

On Monday 11th June I attended an incredibly thought provoking talk and film show on Palestine given by Dave Clinch at the Plough.

On Wednesday 13th June I attended a Dementia Awareness meeting. We are looking to ensure that Great Torrington becomes a “Dementia Friendly Community”. It is early days and we are still compiling the different sources of evidence required to equip the town and show that we are able to fulfil the

obligations required; Great Torrington Town Council is fully supportive of this initiative.

On 21st June I accepted the kind invitation to attend the Clinton Primary School Coldstream Prize Giving Ceremony. This is an annual event held at the school for some years now.

The founder of the Coldstream Guard Regiment, General George Monck was born in Merton in 1608 and in 2011 Merton granted the Freedom of the Parish to this regiment. Sadly, this will be the last annual visit by the regiment for some time, as they are preparing for a tour of duty to Afghanistan.

On Saturday 23rd June I attended the Bideford Regatta, accompanied by my consort, Cllr Margaret Brown. It was great to see so many youngsters getting involved in this sport and how the River Torridge is able to provide leisure and sporting opportunities.

Saturday 25th June was the Armed Forces and Flag Raising Ceremony which was held at Victoria Park in

Bideford. There were several important events to mark this year: the 10th anniversary of Armed Forces Day, the passing of 100 years since the end of the First World War and the Centenary of the RAF. Two aluminium figures of soldiers were unveiled to mark the occasion, which was quite poignant for all who attended.

On Sunday 1st July the annual Civic Service was held at Saint Michael and All Angels Parish. I would like to give my grateful thanks to Rev. Peter Bevan, the Church Wardens, the Organist, Great Torrington Silver Band, Sgt. Jimmy Birch, Mayor’s Cadet and all the ladies for their assistance in preparing the Church for this service. I would also like to thank the various other organisations and members of our community who attended this very special occasion. The collection raised a generous £131.90 for my two charities - The North Devon Hospice and Great Torrington Memory Cafe.

It was lovely to see members of the community, business owners and local town councillors all coming together to clean up the town.

I

think everyone will agree that Great Torrington is looking particularly glorious at the moment, especially with the help of the beautiful flowers and the sunshine. The pride we have in our town is really shining through and I really hope we ‘Brought it Home’ on Southwest in Bloom judging day.

Earlier on in the month I attended ‘dementia friendly’ training with the Friends of the Library and some fellow councillors. It was a great session and we learnt what we can do to help and enable people who have been diagnosed with dementia. The aim is to roll out training sessions to make Great Torrington ‘dementia friendly’, enabling and supporting people and their families to live more easily and with less stress.

Thank you to Mayor Diana Davey and Cllr Sue Mills for getting this started.

‘Torrington Town Tidy’ which is run by town councillors and led by Deputy Mayor Keeley Allin, took place again this month, and I was pleased to be a part of it. It was great to see people working together, and rewarding to see the town looking more attractive at the end of the day. It really makes a big difference, and hopefully will become a regular event.

Even tidying the weeds and sweeping the pavement at the front of your own house will help; many hands make light work.

On the topic of showing pride in our town, I come to the issue of dog poo!

It is a serious problem everywhere. As well as being disgusting, it is a health hazard, and illegal. I’ve been speaking to the Environmental Health Officer at Torridge and she has agreed for me and fellow town councillors to work on different strategies to try and improve the situation. We have very recently set up a social media campaign ‘Scoop the Poop Great Torrington’ to help raise awareness, and will be asking people to send in dog poo related ‘memes of the week’ and posters made by children for us to share. We will be putting up new signage and going out and chalk spraying dog poo on the streets; this is a strategy which has helped in other parts of the country. We are also encouraging people to contact us anonymously to report repeat offenders. On an initial observation a few days ago we were disgusted to see more than 50 dog poos along Juries Lane, where on the same day 80 primary school children had walked to the golf course and back. This is simply unacceptable.

Residents at Pathfield contacted me recently with worries that their park is being sold off for housing. I have looked into this and Torridge have informed me that these rumours are unfounded.

I am pleased that Burwood residents have set up a community group in order to gain funding for their park, which has recently had equipment removed. We are still waiting for designs of the main park (Calf St), along with quotes which will be used to apply for funding. We are organising local fundraisers and will be holding a stall at the Family Fun Day for

the Pannier Market launch in August.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England - Devon held a meeting in Hatherleigh this month; I heard from and spoke to the President of CPRE, Professor Nick Groom. He talked about ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’- focusing on activities and practises, memories and emotions. He also spoke about the need to focus on quality of life; social networks and cohesion; tackling isolation and loneliness, and being part of, and building, connected empowered communities that will last. I like to think that this is what we continue to strive for through our Town and District Councils.

I was honoured to be invited by the 1st Torrington Guides to their ‘EqualiTeas’ evening this week to talk to them about equality in local government and roles of a councillor. It was lovely to meet with these young women and I hope some of them may be inspired to get involved in local government in the future! My three main points for them to remember were: 1. You CAN make a difference. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise- you CAN and WILL. 2. Stand up for what you BELIEVE in, fight for what you believe is RIGHT, and follow your passions.

3. Don’t let being a woman stop you from doing ANYTHING. Please, as usual, do get in touch if you have any concerns and I will do my best to help you. Best wishes and enjoy the rest of the summer.

From Your County Councillor…

I

am grateful to the Editor for allowing me an extended deadline to draw your attention to a major road closure towards the end of September.

Unfortunately, another road closure is planned for the A3124; this time between RHS Rosemoor Gardens and Beaford. At the time of writing the proposed dates for the closure are from 10th September until the 30th November.

The main diversion route will be via the A386 for HGVs, with a secondary diversion route for light vehicles along the B3217 from Dolton Beacon to the B3227 at Atherington back to Torrington.

The reason for this closure is that there is a length of embankment along the road to the south of Rosemoor Gardens that is showing signs of deterioration, and has caused cracking in the carriageway. The section where the road is cracking also has no support in the form of a retaining wall. This road closure is proposed so that the County Council can build a new retaining wall to strengthen the integrity of the carriageway.

I should add that this is not the section of road that was resurfaced earlier in the year! Nonetheless these works are essential otherwise we will end up having a serious risk of a complete structural failure of the carriageway.

In order to construct the retaining wall it has been decided that a road closure is required, to safeguard both the

contractor and members of the public.

However, as soon as it is practically possible, the council will re-open the road and replace the road closure with traffic lights.

During the closure the emergency services will be allowed access should the need arise. RHS Rosemoor will also be open throughout; residents driving from Torrington to Rosemoor will not be blocked by the closure.

I absolutely appreciate that news of this closure is not at all welcome, or

I have sought to minimise the impact as much as possible, and to that end I organised a meeting on 12th July with representatives from RHS Rosemoor, Torrington Town Council, St Giles in the Wood Parish Council and Beaford Parish Council, along with the engineers from Devon County Council who proposed this scheme.

Your Town and Parish Councils and I will continue to keep residents as upto-date on the situation as possible.

Hopefully we will be able to reopen the road well before November, but equally should the opposite happen I will try to make sure everybody is informed as soon as possible.

As ever though, there is more to Devon County Council than just potholes and road closures. DCC’s remit includes economic development within the County, and I was pleased to hear that

the Council has begun producing a new Economic Development Strategy.

The Council has identified a number of key challenges and opportunities around Devon’s productivity, wage levels, business growth and demographic challenges with an ageing population.

This new strategy is intended to guide the County Council in how it can address those respective challenges and opportunities, as well as tackling issues relating to social mobility and inclusion.

Officials at County Hall have assured me that the new Strategy will recognise the importance of our rural market towns in Devon, and the need to ensure rural areas like Torrington Rural get their fair share of support.

he Youth Genesis Trust is offering free places on a

new Youth Work Training Course which starts on Wednesday 26th September at Great Torrington Methodist Church. The six week course will cover topics such as ‘Working with Teenage Issues’, ‘Creative Engagement’ and ‘Working with Challenging Behaviour’.

The course will offer a series of six two hour workshops that will enable participants to explore the basics of youth work and nature of adolescence and at the same time, give people the opportunity to develop the tools to work with young people in various youth work settings.

Youth Genesis is working with communities around Devon to set up youth projects and activities for 11-25 year olds in areas where there are currently no generic youth services.

One of the towns which has benefitted from the work of Youth Genesis is Dartmouth in South Devon, where twelve volunteers were trained to lead three weekly youth sessions which are based in an ex-Devon County Council Youth Centre.

Since January this year, Youth Genesis has been working with local churches and community organisations, as well as Town and District Councillors in Great Torrington, to explore opening up a new youth drop-in for youngsters in the town. A series of public events have been held in St Michaels and All Angels Church to identify young people’s aspirations and explore what community assets could be used to set up a new

It’s Coming Home to Bluecoat!

F

ollowing on from the euphoria of England’s win against Columbia, celebrations continued as the Bluecoat girls’ football team reigned victorious at the North Devon Schools girls’ football finals. The event, co-ordinated by Adrian Avery (School Games organiser for North Devon) took place on Wednesday 4th July at Park School in Barnstaple, and saw 9 teams of Year 5 and 6 girls from primary schools across the region compete for the victory. Prior to the finals, each area had a qualifying competition to secure their place in the final.

The Bluecoat Girls won 1-0 against Yeo Valley, 6-0 against Westcroft, 2-1 against Bishops Tawton and had goal-less draws with Sticklepath and Ilfracombe. With the decision taken not to go to penalties, the final result was a joint 1st place win with both Sticklepath and Ilfracombe.

Chants of “...it’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming, football’s coming home....” rang through the school as the team returned looking rather pleased with themselves. Kelvyn Bond, team coach, commented “I’m so very proud of the girls, and the way they all played. Maizie Mock had the goal of the tournament - just floated the ball in the top left corner and the keeper didn’t stand a chance!”

Adrian Avery added “It was a lovely competition, and the girls had lots of fun.

They all played in great spirit, and showed superb teamwork and fair play.”

A Murder is Announced! Murder Mystery Afternoon!

here is a new flu vaccine available this year, offering better protection for older people. The NHS has recommended your doctor gives you the new 2018 flu vaccine called Fluad. Last year a lot of over 65s were very unwell with influenza illness, even though they had already been given their flu vaccine. This year we will be phoning you to book your appointment, or you can phone us at the end of August to book.

If you are under 65 and eligible for an annual flu vaccine, the NHS has recommended you continue to receive the same flu vaccine as last year, as this will give you the best health benefits.

A

t our AGM it was proposed that membership should be extended to include women. The proposal was carried by a substantial majority.

Hitherto Torrington Probus Club (founded in 1980) was exclusively a male preserve, but the feeling was that times had changed and extending the membership would make a friendly sociable club even more sociable.

There is a full year’s programme of speakers arranged, covering many fields of interest, humour and adventure. The speakers are the club’s guests for aperitif and lunch afterwards.

Two women members have already been accepted and it is hoped that many more will apply.

The club meets every fourth Thursday of the month at 10am in The Black Horse in Torrington’s square.

H

ow many people now remember the Onion Johnnies, those bicycling Frenchmen who appeared each year in late summer, wearing berets and striped tops, and cycled around Britain on bikes top heavy with strings of onions for sale?

These Frenchmen came from a small area around our twin town, Roscoff. It was, and still is, one of the few areas where the soil is suitable for growing the pink onion, a vegetable prized for its unique flavour, versatility, high vitamin C content and keeping qualities.

The pink onion was first grown around Roscoff in the 17th century, and two centuries later the Onion Johnnies began to set off on their bikes to sell their produce further afield. Before long they were a perennial feature of the British summer.

Sadly, times change and the Onion Johnnies no longer add a dash of French colour to summer in Britain. However, they are still to be found in their home town in August, at the annual celebration in which locals demonstrate their pride in the rose-hued vegetable.

In past years, our exchange group members have been lucky enough to visit Roscoff for the onion festival, and we are hoping to be there again next year. Meanwhile, the focus of our activities over the coming months will be getting out and about, meeting people and fund-raising. Here are two dates for your diary:

British Native Flowers to Grow in Your Garden Polemonium caeruleum

T

his hardy perennial has gradually become a popular garden plant, which most of us recognise instantly as ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ because the leaflets grow in opposite pairs along the stem, resembling a ladder. Although it no longer is acknowledged to have any medicinal value, it was once used to treat syphilis, dysentery, toothache and bites of poisonous animals!

The Polemonium genus is widespread across Northern Europe and North America; however, in Britain its distribution may be more to do with it escaping from gardens, and in this country it is usually found in rocky grassland, cliffs and screes.

In its wild form, Polemonium caeruleum has bluey-mauve flowers with five broad, overlapping lobes which contrast with the yellow stamens. Its leaves are compound, in regular pairs of oval to spear-shaped leaflets. Height is approximately 30-80cm (12-64 ins). Given the right conditions, Polemonium can be invasive but it is such an attractive flower, you need only to remove those seedlings which are not growing in the right place!

There is white flowered form, P. caeruleum ‘Album’ which makes a lovely garden plant for sun or light shade. Other species and cultivars to look for are a variegated leaved form, ‘Brise D’Anjou’ and a dark leaved ‘Purple Rain’.

It is easy to grow from seed; sow thinly in early spring, in good, free-draining compost, just covering the seeds and prick out once the second leaves appear.

Great Torrington Remembers Every Man Private Archibald Davey

W

hen researching the lives of soldiers from the Great War, one of the greatest difficulties is the lack of available information.

Archie Davey is one such example and I am hopeful that a local descendant may be able to help expand on his life.

Archie was actually born in Holsworthy in 1897 and lived his early years in the town. A few years before his birth the family, headed up by father and mother John and Amelia Davey, can be found

There are a number of leads to show that at some point between 1910 and the outbreak of war, the family moved to Great Torrington and were resident at New Street.

Archie’s service records note that he was resident in Great Torrington at the time of enlistment. Success for North Devon’s Coastal Heritage

H

artland’s heritage and Second World War sites across North Devon will benefit from a new Coastal Heritage project. The North Devon Coast AONB Partnership has obtained a £49,900 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards this two year project which will explore and reveal the heritage features and stories in the landscape. Features at risk will be addressed through practical conservation work; surveys to record its condition; and new interpretation and celebrations.

A Heritage Officer will develop conservation volunteering, training, events and practical archaeology for local communities, volunteers and schools and the project will be delivered and funded by local partners working with the AONB team.

Fleur ’s Gardening Forum Grasses for Gardens

G

arden designer, Piet Oudolf, introduced us to ‘prairie planting’, mixing grasses with hardy perennials such as Echinacea, Helianthus, Penstemon, Rudbeckia, and Kniphofia. Much was made of this more sustainable way of gardening, because it was more wildlife friendly and required less watering and maintenance. Prairie planting may not be so fashionable now, but grasses have maintained their popularity.

Most ornamental grasses prefer an open sunny position in well-drained soil, but there are some that tolerate shade and some that like moist, even damp soil. Most, especially annuals, are also easy to grow from seed and it’s a lot cheaper!

The Stipa group of grasses are hardy and are grown mainly for their decorative plumes or spikes, especially S. gigantea or Golden Oat Grass – best planted as a specimen where the sun can shine through the stems. It is, however, vulnerable to strong winds.

S.pulcherrima and S. barbatus are softer, with feathery plumes that move gracefully in the breeze. S. tenuissima (Ponytail Grass) is a dwarf form that grows well in containers and is a lovely ‘touchy-feely’ grass.

Carex grasses and sedges are very versatile, can be grown in part-shade or even in the damp garden. They are mainly perennial, but I would not recommend C. pendula as it is highly invasive and a devil to dig out, despite being a most attractive grass when

in flower. Some of the best are C. oshimensis ‘Evergold’, an evergreen, arching grass with a creamy-yellow central stripe down each leaf. C.elata ‘Aurea’ (Bowles’ Golden Sedge) grows happily in the bog garden, or streamside, with lovely, arching golden foliage.

Carex ‘Prairie Fire’ has bronzey-orange leaves and looks fantastic planted with dark leaved Dahlias such as the ‘Bishop’s Children’ varieties.

The Miscanthus group are taller with lovely soft plumes that last well into winter and are excellent in dried floral arrangements; M. sinensis ‘Morning Light’ , M. sinsensis ‘Silberfeder’ (Silver Feather’), M. sinensis ‘Zebrinus’ with its bold stripes, are all excellent border grasses.

Some grasses have blue foliage and Festuca cultivars are probably the best blues, especially F. glauca ‘Blaufuchs’ (Blue Fox) and ‘Elijah Blue’. These two cultivars also make excellent container plants and can be used as edging perennials. Another wonderfully blue grass is Elymus magellanicus, the colour being an intense electric blue, but it can be invasive so keep it in a pot.

Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’ is perhaps one of the most spectacular grasses for growing in a large container, its yellow and green striped leaves cascade over the edge and in autumn are tinged with red. Chionochloa rubra also makes a spectacular specimen grass, with quill-like, coppery-red leaves.

Plant both of these grasses in tall pots for best effects.

There are also many annual grasses with attractive flower heads or foliage which are much cheaper to grow from seed, including Panicum ‘Frosted Explosion’ (used to be Agrostis ‘Fibre Optics’ because that is what the seeds resemble), Setaria ‘Red Jewel’ with lovely dark red leaves and spikelets (grow in full sun for best effect), Pennisetum ‘Purple Majesty’ a tall and stately grass with dark purple spikes and leaves. Hordeum jubatum has pink flushed silky flowers and Lagurus ovatus with soft, furry heads. Lastly, Briza media and B. maxima, both varieties of ‘Quaking Grass’ are very attractive but can be invasive.

J

uly saw Torrington First Thursday Writers cast adrift, as the month’s topic was the galleon Mary Rose.

However the group – not quite three men in a boat but four - came up with very different interpretations. One ingenious and energetic piece of writing described the space battle cruiser, Mary Rose, taking part in an intergalactic war as part of the Milky Way Consortium.

However another piece of prose brought us firmly down to earth again as we were asked to recall the endeavours of the sturdy galleon which was Henry VIII’s flagship that sank in the Solent in 1545, whilst preparing to lead an attack on the French fleet . She lay in this stretch of water until she was raised in the recent past, although still no-one knows for certain why she sank, several theories being put forward over the years.

Another member, although absent, had contributed a piece using a galleon as the theme and described the feelings of three children who had escaped the hardship of the countryside to embark on the vessel which was to take them to the other side of the world.

Joyce Grenfell’s poem containing the words “Stately as two galleons we sail across the floor….” was chosen by another writer and described the events of a Saturday afternoon tea dance.

Our final contribution - an escape from nautical matters - brought us back again to the English summertime describing its fragrant scents, which were abundant on this warm and sunny evening, and were encapsulated in the poem “Flaming June.”

Taking a summer break the group will next meet on Thursday 6th September in the Committee Room of Torrington Conservative Club at 7.30pm when the subject will be “The Key”.

he Plough has a packed visual arts programme throughout August and September, featuring some extraordinary artists.

Two of North Devon’s best loved artists – who have known each other for over 30 years, join hands this summer for a celebratory exhibition at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington - “Out of the Wood” - which runs from Saturday 4th August – until Saturday 8th September.

Engraver Hilary Paynter and carver John Butler’s joint exhibition is a rare opportunity to view their work together.

In engraving, Hilary was president of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and her work is held in many public collections, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, The Ashmolean and the Fitzwilliam Museum. John’s carvings, by turns robust and gentle, have earned him an equally broad base of enthusiastic followers.

From Saturday 4th to Wednesday 29th August, Anja Fischbach is showing her work in the Plough café. A life-long passion for wild swimming and the transformative power of the cold water plunge is the inspiration for Anja’s current work.

Tuesday 4th September to Saturday 20th October, local writer Tanya Landman will be showing her paintings in the café. Well known as the Carnegie Medal winning author of more than thirty books for children and young adults, these paintings are a new departure.

n Friday 1st June Torridge District Council removed the climbing frame from the lower play park in Burwood. The equipment was removed because of the condition it was in, due to a drainage issue in the park. A local resident contacted the council the same afternoon to discuss their plans, and was informed there were no plans to replace the equipment or sort the drainage due to lack of funds.

Their plan was to return the site to grass as it had been before the installation of play equipment.

As residents we felt that this was unacceptable, it was unfair of them to take away the equipment from the children due to no fault of their own, and so it was decided we would form a committee with an aim of improving the site and the equipment.

After some discussions we were made aware of a spring in the hill, and that is what’s causing the site to become waterlogged. After many conversations and emails with TDC they are currently looking into this, and are hoping to secure funding to rectify the issue.

Any equipment that is to be installed will need to be funded by ourselves and, with the cheapest climbing frame being in the region of £25,000, it is no easy task.

n Sunday 1st July Elaine and Paul Weeks very kindly held a lunch event at Millbrook, in aid of Little John’s House. Torrington Dental Practice, Michael Sussex, Dartington Crystal, Kudos Hair Studio, Door to Moor, Charmian Harris, Mark Brown, Sandfords Bakery, a team of helpers and a host of dessert makers, very generously gave up their time to make the event a great success.

We raised £2242 through the hard work and generosity of all these amazing people who not only helped, but attended the lunch, bought raffle tickets and generally supported us and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved.

Little John’s House, Romania, was founded in 1994 as a secure home for children and young people with special needs, helping some of the thousands of forgotten children with disabilities living in state homes and hospitals.

Throughout the year Little John’s House supports vulnerable families, and in the summer holidays groups of volunteers from the U.K. travel out to entertain a vast number of children whose lives are ordinarily very basic. The house, now in its 25th year, has helped and supported hundreds of children and their families to live better lives. With your help we hope to continue this invaluable support for many years to come.

W

ell done to everyone who took part in the ‘farmer’s walk’ fundraiser for Children’s Hospice last month.

Thanks to coach Wayne Hill who comes up with, and organises these crazy ideas; the Hill ladies for running the cake/bake stall; everyone who made cakes to sell; Roly Pitts who helped set up on the day; Tamar trading, RGB and Jewsons for delivering and supplying materials; everyone who took part and everyone who donated. We raised more than £800 this year, less than previous years, but it’s still a lot of money!

Footfall in the town was lower than usual we think a lot of people were probably at the beach...

Three competitive boxers won trophies at the recent awards night: senior boxer Dean Ayling took best boxer of the season. Nicole WaffornLock won the most dedicated boxer, and Ned Pettifer was voted boxer’s best boxer by his club mates. All have earned a well-deserved break for a few weeks before training starts again, ready for the club’s first show of the season in December. The juniors were awarded with bronze, silver and gold certificates and medals, with Ronny Hill winning the junior boxfit award for the season. Andrea Magarotto won the trophy for best recreational boxer.

Our fitness sessions (recreational boxing) will continue through the summer as usual on Tuesdays and Thursdays 6.30pm, upstairs at Torridge Vale Social Club.

Great Torrington & District Care Forum Claiming Attendance Allowance

T

he Care Forum is a networking group for those working in community, health, welfare, caring or pastoral areas - either on a voluntary or paid basis. We meet monthly to discuss current issues and exchange ideas to see how we can best work together for the benefit of our community.

One issue highlighted by the TorrAGE team, is that of claiming Attendance Allowance. As such, we thought it might be helpful to outline what this is for and who can apply for it.

The following information is supplied from an ‘Independent Age’ fact sheet: * Attendance Allowance is currently for people aged 65 or over. This will be changing from 6th December 2018 because of the changes to State Pension age. * You can’t claim Attendance Allowance if you’re already getting Personal Independence Payment or Disability Living Allowance. * It is not means tested, so it does not matter what income or savings you may have. * You may be eligible if you have a long-term condition or disability that means you need help with personal care or supervision to keep you safe. * Help with personal care means you need help with tasks such as washing, dressing, going to the toilet, taking medication or eating. You may need supervision, for example if you have falls, get confused, have seizures or forget to take your medication. * You don’t need to be currently getting help from a partner, friend, relative or carer to qualify – the important thing is that you need help. * Attendance Allowance is paid at two different weekly rates: £57.30 if you need frequent help or continual supervision during the day or night £85.60 if you need help or supervision throughout both day and night, or you’re terminally ill. * Being granted Attendance Allowance may also increase your Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support.

TorrAGE Ageing Well is a registered charity who can offer home visits for people over 65 to help with the completion of Attendance Allowance applications and other financial forms such as; Carers Allowance, Council Tax reductions and ad hoc grants. The team cannot offer advice as they are not a registered to do so; the service is simply to let people to know what benefits are available and to assist them to complete the relevant forms. Although the service is free of charge, a suggested donation of £20 would be enormously helpful to continue the work of their charity.

‘’One espresso to go please. Make it large.’ She drummed her fingers impatiently on the counter of the coffee shop. The coffee machine produced a deafening rasp as billowing clouds of steam fogged the windows. The café was packed, with only a single greasy barstool free at the raised window table.

She decided to leave. As she did so she doubled over. Her stomach was so empty it was agonising, as if she was being eaten from the inside.

She hadn’t eaten in months.

The pain passed and she straightened up. Immediately, a peculiar man in a neat suit collided with her, toppling down at her feet, a sparrow cannoning into a window pane. She gazed down at him with bemused curiosity.

“Whoah,’’ stammered the strange gentleman, “My bad.”

“Don’t worry about it. If anyone should apologise, it is me.’’ She offered him her hand but instead of pulling him up she knelt down. An expression of amazement pierced his face as he noticed the huge gash on the edge of his hand that she was closely examining. The blood was oozing from a sizeable open cut. The drips merged in a puddle on the floor.

As she got up, in a voice barely more than a whisper yet still perfectly audible to him, she said, “AB+. Uncommon.” And whisked away.

In one of our Enrichment and Intervention classes, called Write & Illustrate, Ailis and Megan have carefully crafted and polished their creative writing.

Ailis’ story was inspired by her study of Frankenstein in one of the GTS LBACC Challenges but both pieces also fulfilled the brief: Write a story about a transformation. as if she had left a trail of depression in her wake. He returned to his apartment nursing his wounded hand because he couldn’t for the life of him remember what he had come out for now. The air was cold outside and it was all of a sudden dark and gloomy. Shards of grey rain pelted the concrete. He began to run. There were deep grey pools forming on the deserted street. His feet were squelching in his shoes. The sudden storm attacked viciously at every inch of exposed skin.

He burst through the doors into the lobby of the apartment block he called home. As he caught his breath, he thought about his strange encounter; her stunning hair like a wave of sunlight and eyes that glittered like two enormous emeralds.

The block was damp and grim. It smelled a bit like fish but it was all he could afford in London. He was just about to enter the lift when he noticed two things: one, the block was completely deserted which was extremely odd and two, there was a woman in the elevator wearing a large hat and sun glasses.

She seemed to be waiting for him. No, she couldn’t be, surely not for him.

Nobody he knew would wait for him.

It wasn’t until he was standing next

to her in the lift that he realised who she was. ‘’I bumped into you today,’’ he blurted.

“You did.”

“Well then… we meet again.’’

“I suppose so. How’s the hand?” Unexpectedly, she picked it up and then she did something which made him recoil… she sniffed it.

“Ouch,” she said. ‘’That’s going to leave a scar.’’

Horrified, he stiffened.

The lift doors pinged as the lift came to a shuddery halt. As swift as a sparrow chased by a hawk, he exited.

He rushed down the hall to his own front door and lifted his key to the lock but his crippled hand prevented him from unlocking the door. Cursing with dread, an ice cold shiver ran down his spine as he realised the mysterious woman was entering the apartment next to his. Like a raven she swept over, opened the door for him and swooped into his flat all in one fluid motion.

The closing aperture of the doorway revealed her expression of bloodlust.

Inspired by Benjamin Zephaniah’s poem ‘The British’, which uses a recipe metaphor to describe British society, pupils were asked to create recipe poems about their own lives and families.

The ingredients could be anything or anyone in their lives which has influenced them, described using culinary verbs and metaphors. Here’s Modou’s fabulous example:

A Recipe for me: Fruit Smoothie

Take one strong well established African baobab tree, the tree of life-my grandma.

Pick seven baobab fruits, kissed by the Gambian sun, my uncles + aunties and my dad.

In a barrel mix together and float the barrel from the Gambia to the uk.

Crush a punnet of strawberries, sisters and raspberries, cousins, pears, aunties + uncles.

Add to the mixture in the barrel.

Then stir in the crushed ice.

Pour into a big shiny glass bowl with lots of straws for everyone to enjoy!

t our last meeting, we held a very enjoyable and successful curry evening, with 21 members attending a cooking demonstration and sampling some very tasty dishes. As usual there will not a meeting in August, but we will be visiting the Torview Winery in Sheepwash on 14th August where weather permitting, we will enjoy a picnic lunch and some wine tasting. Our next members’ meeting will be on Tuesday 11th September with a talk on Dartmoor.

More and more people, who attend one or more of Dario’s classes, find that the benefits are cumulative and their understanding is growing. They feel better, more energetic, more calm, more creative and delighted to discover simple effective ways of supporting their own wellbeing. Wellbeing Tip: At this time of year we all particularly enjoy fruit, but if we’re to avoid causing ourselves digestive issues, we need to give consideration to proper food combining, in other words, which foods are easily digested together and which are not. The reason for this is that different enzymes are required for the digestion of proteins, fats and starches, and if our digestion is challenged in any way, eating all these at one sitting makes the situation worse. Fruits and concentrated sweeteners being relatively simple carbohydrates, digest first and quickly, but then monopolize the digestive system, causing other foods to wait in a queue behind them. The result causes all sorts of difficulties, including fermentation, need I say more! So fruits are best eaten on their own (at least 30 mins before anything else) as snacks or energizing small meals. The other alternative is to have them in small quantities at the end of a meal. Fruit can be eaten with green vegetables, notably with lettuce and celery, so fruit with a green salad is a good combination.

If you have digestive issues, avoid combining fruit with starches and protein – that oatmeal raisin almond cookie may taste great, but will exacerbate that grumpy digestion. If we take the time and care to pay attention to food combining, we build our digestive strength and become more digestively tolerant. Definitely worth doing, I can tell you, from personal experience.

Torrington RFC Great Support on Clean Up Weekend!

other resident ‘Big Jack’ got covered in grass seeds; they are a nightmare, as they can get stuck in the skin and our ears and cause some horrible infections. They’re easy to remove so just something to keep an eye out for.

No rest for the wicked as they say, as August is a busy old month for us!

Starting with the Umberleigh Fete on 4th August, where we will have a stall selling all sorts of goodies. This is followed on 25th August by the High Bickington Fete, where we will be running a dog show starting at 2.30pm.

We have another show celebrating The Cranford Pub’s 2nd anniversary the next day on the 26th. This promises to be a fantastic day, with lots of craft stalls, a BBQ and music.

As always the rescue is looking for volunteers to help with their fundraising events, so if you have an hour or two to spare then please do get in contact at info@k9focus.co.uk or call Aunty Lynne on 07971 461806. ur AGM was held early in June, with no changes except the Vice Chair is now Rob Vowles. All other posts were retained by the existing members.

Nat West and Rugby England joined forces countrywide to sponsor ‘club clean up’ weekend. A fantastic turnout from club members young and old, resulted in all the jobs getting done on Saturday, instead of the anticipated two days. The fantastic weather ensured there were no hold ups and jobs could be completed in good time. This involved removing all training kit from containers and washing it. Sweeping out the containers and replacing the kit in an orderly fashion.

The installation of a washing machine and tumble drier in the changing rooms. A complete pressure washing of the changing rooms floors and walls, with a repaint in the home changing room. The outside of the clubhouse and changing rooms was treated to a fresh coat of paint, with an almost production line of brushes and rollers working swiftly to get it done in only a couple of hours. The bar was also stripped out and repainted, freshening it up enormously and the kitchen was given a similarly good clean. All our re-glazed pictures were taken down, holes filled and walls repainted to give that area a brighter look as well.

At the back of the clubhouse an accumulation of old signs, remnants of carnival floats and general detritus was heaved into a skip kindly donated by A39 Skip Hire.

A special mention must go to those members who selflessly donated materials from their local businesses, and money spent on materials from the day’s sponsors Once all the jobs had been completed, we were treated to a BBQ and refreshments and the younger participants enjoyed a game of rounders before the adults joined in!

ON THE PITCH: pre-season training is well underway for both our 1st and 2nd teams, on Wednesday evenings from 6.45pm. New players are always welcome.

Our season opens with the annual Dicky Cawthorne Trophy game, against South Molton at Donnacroft on 25th August. Dicky was a prominent figure in the evolution of both clubs, and his legacy lives on in what promises to be an enjoyable game.

Our first league game in the restructured Devon 1 league kicks off with Exeter Athletic (formerly Wessex) visiting Donnacroft on 8/9, this is followed by an away trip to Exeter Saracens 15/9 and the New Cross at Donnacroft 29/9.

Our 2nd team start their season a little earlier, by visiting Bideford on 1/9, Honiton 2nds visit Donnacroft 8/9, Ilfracombe at home 22/9. All games are a 3pm kick off, with the bar and kitchen open for a beer and pasty from 1pm.
