O

ver the last month I have attended many Civic functions, a garden fete and a Church fete, all giving an opportunity to meet local residents and answer many of their concerns over a cup of tea. The most memorial event was the Verdi Requiem performance in the Barnstaple Pannier Market last Sunday, with Coast to Coast, Choirs of North Devon, South Devon and Bude Choral Society. Along with four soloists they raised the roof, it was a most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon and some of our Great Torrington Choir members took part, we were very proud. Our Town Council Economic Group is pressing ahead and considering how to encourage more business into our Town. The STITCH request to send a letter to the Secretary of State has been approved by the DCC Scrutiny Committee, reference the illegal closure of hospital beds at our Community Hospital. The MP Geoffrey Cox has agreed to arrange a meeting with the Minister for Health and meetings are also taking place with regard to the threat to services at NDDH. We must all protest loudly at the proposed changes, some of which will mean travelling to Exeter and further to get treatment that could be provided locally. Given the uncertainty about future health services at NDDH it is vital that we have a better understanding of the NHS strategy and its impact on our community. So I am hosting a Public Meeting in Torrington 11am Saturday 20th August at the Bowling Club. My guest speaker will be Deborah Harrington of the National Health Action Party. Posters will be on display shortly. I hope you all enjoy a great summer. Please ring or email me if you have a special occasion you would like me to attend. Best wishes, Margaret Brown, 01805 624375.

Torrington Commons Conservators’ Treasure Hunt

A

ll family members are welcome to take part in the Conservators’ Walking Treasure Hunt, which will take place on Sunday 4th September. This year the route takes you mainly around the town, with only the fringes of the Commons included, which means that it will be mostly on the flat. The Treasure Hunt will start at South Street Car Park and is free. You are asked to be there at 2.30pm so we can send groups out at regular intervals, depending on numbers. So if you think you know Torrington well, why not come along and join in? All you need is a pen or pencil to write down the answers; see if you know more about the town than your Mum and Dad, or Grandma and Granddad for that matter! If you’re a visitor to the town then you are invited too, all you have to do is keep your eyes open!

Thank You from the Friends of Torrington Library

T

he Friends of Torrington Library would like to thank all those who donated items for their stall at the car boot sale on Torrington Commons in May. It raised £102.35 towards the children’s Summer Reading Challenge in the library. Our next event will be a Quiz Night at the Torrington Arms on Friday 30th September at 7.30pm. Teams of up to six, £5 per person. To book please contact John on 01805 603394 or Christine on 01805 624030. All profits to the library.

Victory For The STITCH Campaign

I

n a Devon County Council Health and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee meeting on Monday 20th June, it was agreed that the situation with Torrington Community Hospital and future services had to be referred to the Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt. It was a decision that was carried overwhelmingly with just two abstentions, and was one of the first meetings of this type to allow public participation. Four members of The STITCH campaign, Margaret Brown, John Wardman, Di Davey and Trisha Martin addressed members of the committee. They reminded them of the illegal removal of the ten in-patient beds at the hospital, without consultation, and also the difficulties the campaign faced in dealing with the Clinical Commissioning Group and The NEW Healthcare Trust; misinformation and obstructive methods in dismissing the very real concerns of the population of Torrington and the 17 surrounding parishes following the loss of the beds and the introduction of ‘Enhanced Care Closer to Home’. This victory for STITCH vindicates the actions of the campaign, including several public meetings, a stunning outcome in a Parish Poll and information to the media in pursuing the reinstatement of the inpatient beds at Torrington Community Hospital. It will have a huge impact on the local hospital campaigns in towns across the region, and much further afield. STITCH has requested that the MP for Torridge and West Devon, Geoffrey Cox, arranges a meeting with the Health Minister Jeremy Hunt in London and that

de in Torringt

he supports the campaign fully in this request. “A consultation process should NOT have serious failings. The Tucker Report identified seven major failings and recommendations. Clearly the consultation process was not in any way adequate and we ask this Committee to refer our case to the Secretary of State.” John Wardman “The Trust & CCG continually dismissed our views and findings; they had their own agenda and were very keen to silence us.” Trisha Martin Diana Davey informed the committee of several cases she has had brought to her attention, where ‘care closer to home’ failed including that of her own sister-in-law. Margaret Brown referred to the independent report by Dr Helen Tucker, which found several failings in the NEW Trust and the CCG, including the lack of an impact assessment and added, “It has been our contention from the start, that the ‘Test of Change’ in Torrington was illegal.” This decision is the start of a new chapter for STITCH, and reinforces our commitment to get the high quality healthcare that the Torrington community deserves. We are also taking an active interest in the campaign to save the vital lifesaving services and time critical procedures at NDDH, and will be hosting a public meeting in Torrington to bring you up to date with developments, so watch this space. Wishing you all a very happy summer. Margaret Brown, STITCH

You do not have to speak the language, or even live in Torrington itself, to take part. We can put clubs and organizations from this area in touch with their Breton counterparts through our network of connections in the Roscoff area. We are also planning a group visit to Roscoff in August 2017. Group members meet frequently on a Saturday at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington, to plan our activities; the next open group meeting will be in September, date to be confirmed. Regular updates appear in The Crier and on our Facebook page. We also arrange and take part in local events, to socialize, raise funds for the group and to increase awareness of the exchange scheme. Do You Care About Your Community?

hat organisation has run an initiative that has almost completely eradicated Polio from the world, but also funded defibrillators in our local communities here in North Devon? What organisation was trusted enough to help set up the United Nations, but has our local Mayor as a member? What organisation helps provide clean, safe water to drought ridden communities around the world, but doesn’t forget the needy in our local community, here in North Devon? What organisation helps provide Shelterboxes to areas all over the World in the immediate aftermath of disasters, but also provides help to those in need in our local community, here in North Devon? What organisation provides scholarships to educate exceptional graduates all around the world, but also strongly supports all our children in local schools, here in North Devon? The answer is Rotary. With the support of the community, Rotary makes a difference. If you would like to make a difference, why not come and join us. Torrington Golf Club News

A

very warm welcome to the Torrington Rotary Club, who are now holding their weekly meetings at Great Torrington Golf Club. Mark Hill and Steve Baker have, unfortunately, lost in the 5th round of the Daily Mail Foursomes, away at Teignmouth. The men’s’ league team came second in the fourth round at Highbullen, and are currently lying second in division one with two rounds remaining, and we are through to the second round of the Rose Bowl, to be played towards the end of the month. The ladies had their league match at Staddon Heights cancelled due to fog, and this will now be replayed at the beginning of September. We are now mid-way through our Open Week, and so far have been very lucky with the weather and entries have been encouraging. Captain’s Day, the next big event, is on August 6th and players from other clubs are welcome. Sue Membery, Club Secretary

Torrington in Bloom Potato Growing Results! September at RHS Rosemoor: Art, Craft, Food & Drink!

Art Exhibition 2nd to 18th September

O

ver 100 of the South West’s most talented artists are involved in this exhibition of naturalistic pictures, prints and cards created using a variety of media. The focus is on gardens and plants as well as landscapes, seascapes and wildlife pictures and the range of images is eclectic in both style and price. All the work exhibited is for sale and the exhibition is stewarded by at least one of the participating artists each day.

Celebrate September Weekends 2nd, 10th & 17th September

T

he judges from Britain in Bloom visited Torrington on the 20th July, not the 19th as originally planned (this gave us an extra half-day to run around like headless chickens making final ‘titivations’ to various parts of the town). I can’t say how it went, since the cut-off date for this Crier is two weeks before the visit, and the presentation day is being held at the beginning of October, so you will be waiting some time before you know how we performed. We will have also completed judging the Best Garden competition this year, too, with more new entries; if you still have not returned your trophies/shields please do so asap. However, there is one competition for which I can announce the results and that is the school potato growing competition for Year 4 of the Torrington Bluecoat C of E Primary School. There were five pupils who achieved weights of well over a Kilo (2.2lbs). The remainder of the children mostly managed between 400- 800g and a few between 800-950g. The winners are: 1st - Kyle Baker 1.439Kg 2nd - Cody Gardiner 1.432Kg 3rd - Evie Grills 1.271Kg 4th - Grace Potts 1.268Kg 5th - Maizie Mock 1.119Kg The competition was closer than ever this year with only 6g separating 1st and 2nd place, and only 3g between 3rd and 4th. There were a total of 52 entries this year, and most managed to grow a good meal’s worth of potatoes. Well done everybody who took part and thanks to Mums, Dads, Grannies, Grandads, too! .E.D. - Family Explore Days are a great way for the whole family to have fun, learn some new skills, put them into practice and discover some cool facts about our Devon Woodlands. Each F.E.D. is based around a theme connected with the woodland, delivered by Katy and Vince who own and manage it. There are three days on offer this summer (see diary listings) ‘Children’s Charcoal Challenge’, ‘Home, Habitat and Hiding’ and ‘Flowers, Forest and Fabric’. Each day includes a forest trail, learning a new skill and a creative activity. Family Explore Days cost £15 per family (2 adults + two children) and booking is essential. Courage Copse, Umberleigh, is a 15.5 acre working woodland in the Taw Valley, North Devon. Katy and Vince are charcoal makers who also run training courses, workshops and school visits. Bickford Centre Celebrates 40th Anniversary

G

reat Torrington’s Bickford Centre in South Street celebrated its 40th anniversary on 30th June. It is an active and thriving centre for the community, providing a haven for rest, socialising and refreshment. It is a free facility for all the over 60s, offering a friendly atmosphere, comfortable seating and lovely tea, coffee and biscuits (at very small cost). We also host other activities such as a visiting chiropodist and the Sensory Bus. It is a place to discover what’s going on, from the display notices and posters advertising topical local events and items of interest. Do pay us a visit, we are open daily from 10am and you will be made very welcome. Get Together Friends, a non-profit making group open to all over 60s, meet here on Tuesdays for their Senior Citizen’s club. This is when members can book and purchase tickets for meals and events (often a film at the Plough Arts Centre). Do come along and see us!

The Importance of Vaccination for Your Rabbit So what should my rabbit be vaccinated against?

V

iral/ Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (V/RHD) is an infectious viral disease that attacks and causes massive haemorrhaging of the internal organs of rabbits. VHD has a very short incubation period of up to 48 hours. Symptoms may include a loss of appetite, lethargy, a high fever or spasms but sadly most commonly sudden death. VHD is often a very swift and sudden killer, giving little or no warning. Rabbits may die without showing any symptoms at all. Rabbits who do survive this disease are carriers and shed the virus for at least 42 days after. Unfortunately there is no known cure for VHD. How it is spread. VHD can be spread via direct contact between rabbits but also via indirect contact by people, rodents, clothing or objects. Myxomatosis is caused by the myxoma virus, normally the first signs of infection are puffy, fluid filled swellings around the head and face. If left untreated, a rabbit’s symptoms will grow progressively worse causing painful skin irritation, lethargy and blindness. Ultimately, a severely infected rabbit will stop eating and drinking and may succumb to secondary lung infection. How it is spread. Myxomatosis is commonly spread by fleas and other biting insects and but can also be transmitted by direct contact with other infected rabbits. The virus incubation period may last up to two weeks after infection, so you may notice changes in your rabbit’s behaviour or appetite before you notice other signs. Symptoms may appear gradually and can be mistaken for respiratory tract infection, pasteurella or conjunctivitis. Myxomatosis is not immediately fatal: some rabbits can survive for months whilst infected, but will prove fatal for many within 12 days. Recovery is sometimes possible with intensive care. However, myxomatosis can be a very prolonged and extremely unpleasant disease and euthanasia is generally recommended.

So what CAN we do? The importance of vaccination...

By vaccinating your rabbit you are giving them the best chance of defence against these awful diseases. The vaccination like all vaccines, works by ‘teaching’ the immune system (the body’s natural defences) how to defend itself against a disease. It contains a weakened strain of the myxoma virus which has been genetically modified so that it can produce a protein of the RHD virus. When it is given to rabbits the immune system recognises the myxoma and RHD materials as ‘foreign’ and makes antibodies against them. In the future, if the rabbits are exposed to any of the viruses, the immune system will be able to respond more quickly. Hatchmoor Vets

01805 603324 Great Torrington Memory Café Fibromyalgia Support

I

n June, Renata came along and ran a session of chair exercises which everyone enjoyed. We are open on the second and fourth Thursday and will continue with the two café meetings until September. We meet between 10.30am and 12.30pm at the Methodist Church at the top of Mill Street. In July, Theresa came along and got everyone singing and in August Julia is running a singing for health session. At the September session we are looking forward to a presentation by Dr Jamie Short, who is a Senior Psychologist at Barnstaple Hospital. The memory café enables people with dementia/memory loss and their families/ carers to get peer support from others who have the same difficulties. Peer support promotes self-care, independence, well-being and choice. The cafe enables people to meet regularly with others and provides an informal environment for receiving information about dementia/memory loss, gives practical tips about coping with dementia, provides a social network and a forum where advice can be given by health and social care professionals. It also offers emotional support and reduces social isolation. We operate on a drop in basis, everyone is welcome to come along and join in and enjoy a cuppa and biscuits/cake as well as regular activities. If you require any further information then please contact Pauline on 01805 625969.

Best Player in Quartet Class for Shebbear College

T

here were 88 entries for Bideford Town Band’s 26th annual solo and quartet contest held last Saturday at Kingsley School in Bideford. With entrants coming from all over the South West and Wales, Shebbear College was well represented with four players performing solos, duets and a quartet, under the guidance of Mr Adrian Edwards, the College brass music teacher. Harrison Mitchell, Samuel Odlin, Archie Boycott and Jessica Alexander all played solos in their relevant age groups, with Samuel being awarded 4th prize in his class of 16 players, just being beaten from 3rd place by half a point. The best result of the day came in the Junior Quartet class when Archie, Samuel and Jessica were joined by Alex Cole from Hatherleigh School to play ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. After much deliberation from the adjudicator they were awarded 2nd place, just behind a quartet from Upper Rhondda! Samuel Odlin, on trombone, was awarded a special award for the best player in the quartet class and carried off an impressive shield as his prize. Well done to all involved!

G

reat Torrington has a long, rich and varied history. Of course there was the battle of 1646, but Great Torrington is so much more than that. Take for example our dairy industry, a well-known mainstay of the town’s history, or our thriving gloving history. Torrington Museum aims to showcase a little bit of everything that makes Torrington Great. We have far more fascinating exhibits than we currently have room to display, but we think you’ll love the current selection. From early archaeological finds to artefacts that call to mind our rich agricultural past, to gloving machines that still work perfectly and memorabilia from Torrington in war time, a walk round the museum will take you on a tour of our town’s history. Come and stay awhile, you’ll be surprised what you’ll find tucked amongst our exhibits. Maybe you’ll discover bells from our time-honoured town crier tradition, dentist’s instruments that will make you glad you live in modern times, or even a collection of vacuum cleaners! Pay us a visit and discover more about Torrington’s history. Our volunteers will guide you round our collections, or explore in your own time. We’re open 10:30am-4pm Monday to Friday and 10:30am-1pm Saturday, admission is free.

he countdown is on for over five weeks of summer fun at RHS Garden Rosemoor. Families can embark on an out-of-this-world adventure this summer in Devon as the RHS Garden goes space mad. Youngsters can follow the intergalactic, space-themed, garden trail, enjoy stratospheric storytelling with the Entertainingly Different crew, create cosmic crafts, visit the Rocket Science Exhibition, take part in Puppet Theatre workshops and discover how our feathered friends have influenced flight and space exploration during spectacular birds-of-prey flying displays. You will spot ‘The Rosemoor Rocket’, a massive 15ft sculpture created by Rosemoor’s very own Bob Jackson using recycled garden equipment. The summer activities have been inspired by the RHS Campaign for School Gardening and UK Space Agency project, Rocket Science, in which 2kg of rocket seeds were sent to the International Space Station. The seeds – which spent several months in microgravity under the care of British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake – have now been returned to Earth and have been grown by hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren in a huge experiment to investigate the impact of microgravity and space travel on seed germination and growth. Rosemoor is running its own rocket seed growing experiment throughout the summer so visitors can find out first-hand about the ‘Rocket Science’ campaign. Sally Charleton, Head of Site at RHS Garden Rosemoor, said: “Thanks to Tim Peake’s inspiration and the RHS Campaign For School Gardening Rocket Science campaign, all things space-related are very topical and extremely popular, so we wanted to give our visitors the chance to enjoy their very own intergalactic adventure.” She went onto say “We’ve got so many different activities throughout the summer holidays and every day there is something fun for all the family to enjoy including other events which are not space orientated, such as Outdoor Theatre with ‘Ratburger’ – based upon famous comedian and children’s author David Walliams’ book. There is also our Local Produce Show and late summer Plant Fair too.” The summer holiday fun runs until 29th August and includes an exhibition of images of space, stars and planets from Exeter University, a hydroponic display showing how plants could be grown in space and from the 1st August there will also be a replica NASA astronaut suit on display. Visit www.rhs.org.uk/rosemoor for full details. All of the events except Outdoor Theatre* are included in normal garden admission and are free for RHS members.

Pause for Thought

B

ob Dylan wrote a song ‘the times they are a changin’, these words seem to ring true with the result of the referendum dividing the population and the political parties. In the first chapters of the bible we read how God created our amazing universe, including our planet earth, followed by us. Then in the last section we have Revelation which tells of the end of the earth as we now know it. Many Christians would agree we are living in what we call ‘the end times’, and the return of Jesus as He promised. There are a number of prophecies in scripture foretelling the end times, some have taken place and others have not. There’s a wonderful story in the bible about ten virgins, five were wise and five foolish. They were to attend a wedding, should it be at night when the bridegroom came, the wise virgins had spare oil for their lamps, but not the foolish ones, (Matt:25: 1-13). This parable which Jesus told is for us, it’s not about having enough oil, but being prepared in our hearts for His return, Jesus is that bridegroom. The five wise virgins represent those of us who have already given our hearts to Him. Not only are we guaranteed a place in heaven, we can also experience His wonderful presence in our lives daily. So the punch line is: which of the virgins are you? Do you know Him in your heart or haven’t you taken that step yet? Why not make it today? If you have given your life to Jesus and are looking for a Church, we would love to welcome you into our family at Grosvenor Torrington. Vernon Andrew

Probus Member Receives GSM Medal After 66 Years

A

t the June meeting of Probus, it was announced that member Bob Mather had received the GSM with Berlin Airlift clasp for his service flying on the Berlin Airlift when the city was blockaded by the Russians. The RAF and the USAAF airlifted 3 million tons of food and material into the beleaguered city with a population of 2.5 million, using over 700 aircraft. The blockade lasted from June 1948 until June 1949 with Bob flying in more than 200 missions. US flyers received an immediate medal, but no British medal was struck until 2015 when Royal sanction was granted, after much lobbying by the military commission. Last year Bob gave a talk on the subject at one of our meetings. Potential new members are welcome to attend one of our meetings, which are held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 10am at The Black Horse, in Torrington. A friendly welcome will greet you.

his August we have two local artists, Helen Lee and Gill Jones, up in the gallery with watercolours acrylics and prints inspired by the beautiful land and seascapes of North Devon. The exhibition runs from Friday 5th August Saturday 3rd September.

Then in September Richard Meyer and Eilean Eland’s exhibition ‘Unquiet Life’ will be in the gallery from Friday 9th September - Saturday 1st October. Unquiet Life focuses on ‘Still lifes’ which are actually anything but ‘still’. Richard’s paintings are often richly impastoed and as much about the plasticity of oil paint as subject matter. Eilean’s ceramic sculpture is energetic and very personal, inspired by fecundity in the female form and in nature. Richard and Eilean will be in residence at various times in the gallery from Saturday 10th-24th as part of North Devon Art Trek. Richard is running a still life painting workshop on Saturday 24th and Eilean, a paperclay sculpture workshop on Saturday 1st October. Down on the café wall in August we have a selection of portraits in oils by Tanya Kevern, who teaches art at Great Torrington School, and in September we

local school were very pleased to host a surprise visit by Boris Johnson as he visited North Devon on Friday 1st July. On Monday that week, this famous politician was capturing global attention and on Friday he was visiting Chulmleigh Community College! Tori Higgleston (aged 14) said: “I really enjoyed having the opportunity to meet a leading politician. To me, his policies weren’t important, more that I was meeting someone who has had huge success in life - as success is something that I want for me.” (photographed with Boris Johnson below). Michael Johnson Head teacher said: “We have been delighted by the endorsement of the work done by so many people in Chulmleigh, to improve the standards of the buildings, and even more importantly, to improve the standard of education we are pleased to offer here.” Boris Johnson said: “It’s one of the best performing schools in the area, partly because of staff, and also the huge effort they’re making with the facilities and their academy status.” Peter Heaton Jones, MP for North Devon said: “Despite everything that has happened, he still wanted to come here today as I have been telling him for months about the amazing work being done here in Chulmleigh.” During the visit, Boris Johnson gave a speech, had a cream tea the Devon way, listened to accomplished pianists and was shown to the site of the new Technology area where he laid a foundation stone. have another return visit by Barbara Fryer, with her wildlife photographs on canvas. Financial literacy should be taught in schools

T

he 2008 recession saw the economy shrink by 5% in 18 months, national income sink by 10%, the majority of young adults financially crumble and middle-aged people lose years of pension savings. You see, very few people prepare themselves for events like this; in the case of an event like losing a job, they would have nothing to fall back on. Most people are so intent on owning the latest iPhone that they fail to contemplate where their hard earned cash might be better spent. By the time they have left school they are completely unprepared for the financial realities of the real world. Even ideas as simple as spending less than you earn aren’t introduced to most teens; it really is no surprise that it was these young people that got affected the most during the events of 2008. One could argue that financial education is the parent’s responsibility, but these parents were brought up through the same, financially-illiterate education system so they have little knowledge to pass on. The most important topic to cover is cash flow. If you aren’t aware of what cash flow is, it is basically the transfer of money in and out of a person’s or business’s account.

Where most people go wrong is that their disposable income gets transferred straight into liabilities, like clothes and new vehicles, whereas a far smarter approach would be to spend that money on incomegenerating assets like real estate, stocks or bonds. The money generated by those assets would go back into the person’s income which would eventually build up enough for the person to purchase more assets and therefore increase the amount of passive income they earn. Eventually, they will reach the point where they no longer need to work, as their assets are generating enough income to cover the cost of living. Too many people are concentrating on working for money and not making money work for them. Neither can it be argued that we have no time in our timetables for a 50 minute lesson on finance. I know that in our school, every fortnight we have a 50 minute ‘3Rs’ lesson which could easily encompass the topic of finance for at least a term. I know that many other schools class it as PSHE. My classmates and I find that a lot of time is wasted in these lessons covering topics that we already know about: sex ed’, self-esteem and stress. After asking fellow pupils, it has become apparent that they

would like to be taught the subject as they realise the importance of it. In this day and age where kids and teens are bombarded with adverts and marketing propaganda, it is easier than ever for them to be sucked into tempting offers, planned out by large, greedy corporations who wouldn’t think twice about those they’re putting into debt. So many teens are focused on materialistic objects because companies are forever labelling their newest products as the ‘latest and greatest’, the phone that they bought 6 months ago is now outdated, the overpriced jacket they bought 2 months ago isn’t ‘in’ anymore and a new game has just been released meaning that their current game isn’t good enough anymore. Not only would financial literacy benefit those to whom it is taught, it would benefit the national economy as a whole. The UK currently owes £1.56 trillion in national debt and is going up at a rate of £107 billion per year, this rate is only going to continue rising if we carry on bringing our younger generations into a country where people fail to know the difference between an asset and a liability or how to write a tax statement. Tom Luxton, Year 11

Finally, as part of their Outbreak challenge and study of dangerous diseases, Year 7 have been wondering what it might be like to be a pathogen. A day in the life of a pathogen.

It was on an autumn day when I had already infected someone with the virus Varicella. He was a child and he did not know he had the virus. Suddenly, he started to walk towards his dad. ‘Yes’ I thought, ‘Another person to make ill.’ So when they touched I did a leap of faith on to his hand. Now the challenge was to climb up to his nose so I could make him ill. Chicken pox is a lot more dangerous for adults so this was the perfect time to make somebody ill. As I went further into the immune system, I realised that this particular person had immune system problems. The day was getting better and better. Then, snapping me out of my day dream, I was stopped by an army of cells. They punched me. They kicked me but I still managed to get through. Since I was struggling, I decided to multiply. Within seconds there were over 100 clones of me. Now I could win the fight. The immune system had, by now, calmed down so I could get on with my job. I could feel myself getting rapidly hot. Oh no, he’s not meant to get a fever this early. I heard something coming towards me. It was big. It was huge! I told my clones to get the illness secured into the body because I knew this was the end. Then blackness. Abbie Soanes, Year 7

It is, however, time to say goodbye to a couple of our longstanding committee members, Anthea Sussex and Sue Kavanagh, who've been giving up their free time for many years for FoTB, but whose Year 6 sons are moving on from Bluecoat; thank you for all your time, effort and dedication to our school. balloon modelling and event-themed craft activities provided by The National Trust. It’s in aid of the National Lobster Hatchery, Padstow, who will be exhibiting some of their baby lobsters prior to their release into Clovelly Bay at the end of the day. At the heart of the NLH’s work is their lobster restocking project whereby local fishermen bring ‘pregnant’ female lobsters to the hatchery, so that their delicate offspring are given a better chance in life by

being raised in captivity without predators. These young lobsters are raised to a size where they can be released back into the sea and look after themselves. www. nationallobsterhatchery.co.uk Visit www.boatstories.co.uk/lobsterpotting-and-berried-hens.html to watch a lobster film about the Lundy no-take zone. W

ow it has been a busy few weeks getting ready for our next events, judging the online photo competition and of course trying to find homes for the waggy tails that are currently in kennels. At the moment to have an influx of German Shepherd Dogs who are all youngsters. Most were bought as pups when, just like myself, they were very cute and cuddly but have now grown into big dogs – although of course still cute! Like many intelligent breeds they need a lot of stimulation to keep them happy and so if you are thinking of getting a puppy, then it is important to read up on the breeds beforehand to see if they fit into your lifestyle. Better still, think about adopting a youngster from a rescue centre – you can see how big they are! Many of the dogs that come into rescue do not like other dogs and this is primarily down to them not being socialised as a youngster. A great way is to take them to a fun dog show where they can meet lots of other dogs, or simply take them regularly to areas where there are other dogs. How fortunate we are to have all the local beaches. Our volunteers are currently gearing up for our big event at Castle Hill House in Filleigh on 4th September where we will not only be holding our usual fun dog show, but will also be staging our very first ‘Jog with Your Dog’ event, details of which can be found on our website www. k9focus.co.uk. This is a 5k run (or walk) around the lovely estate and should be

great fun. Do come along, as there are fabulous prizes for the first three people past the finish line, rosettes for all dogs that enter and, of course, you get to meet me as I will hopefully be at the front of the pack! We also need more volunteers to help run the day, and so if you can help please do email Aunty Lynne at lynne@k9focus. co.uk. In addition to the run/walk we have our dog show starting at 12 noon and there are lots of stalls and food all hosted by The Voice local radio. It’s going to be a fabulous day and the weather has been ordered!! Hope to see lots of you in September and in the meantime enjoy the summer holidays. Woofs & Licks as always, Miss Jessica.
