Great Torrington Town Council Notice of Annual Meeting of the Town Council
The Care Forum’s 30th Birthday
O
n the 5th February 1986 after some months of planning, the Late Rev John Bradley (Methodist Minister) and Keith Hughes (Torrington’s DCC Community Education Tutor) formally met with some 15 other care, welfare and health workers, for the Forum’s first meeting. Keith explained, “I came to Torrington in January 1984 and was concerned by poor communication within the town. The Torrington events diary was up a flight of curving stairs in the then library, and barely used. Groups and organisations were running events at the same time, clashing horribly, hence The Crier was invented. Organisations concerned with health, welfare, and care were not communicating well with each other, today we would call it joined up thinking!” Against this background John and Keith planned the Care Forum.
So what does the Care Forum do and achieve?
Well it attracts both professionals and volunteers from a wide range of organisations, but all concerned with the community’s welfare. Beyond the aim of networking and information dissemination, our more significant achievements have been the CDT; the zebra crossing; unemployment club; regeneration group; youth club establishment and The Crier. The Forum is an excellent networking and information exchange group, where all attending can share their work interests, concerns and visions. We also discuss more general issues which might concern the whole community, including all our school catchment area villages. The Forum is open to all, whether you are directly linked to a caring group or are simply a caring person. Recently we have been holding ‘planning for the future’ sessions, which will help us respond to the needs and views of our members, so that the Care Forum can be a strong voice in our community for many years to come. We will be celebrating the Forum’s 30th birthday on Wednesday 11th May at The Bluecoat Centre, between 11-2pm and there will be light refreshments. If you represent a voluntary group who has an affinity to our own, please do come along and learn more about us and what has been achieved over the years by a very dedicated committee. Do come along and celebrate our special birthday with us. To help us with catering arrangements please email our secretary Judith Knock judithnock@btinternet.com or ring Richard Rumbold 01805 625662 to confirm your attendance.

We in North Devon have lost confidence in the people who run our NHS
W
hen will the Northern Devon Healthcare Trust /NEW CCG listen to what the people of The Crier wants to hear your Torrington want, or be transparent when views on local issues. Please send taking healthcare decisions! In the to torrington.crier@gmail.com, via propaganda released they are not telling our Facebook page, or to Castle Hill, the community the full truth. Short term Torrington, EX38 8AA. ‘temporary’ planning and keeping the public in the dark are what the NHS in North Devon is about. Their ‘temporary’ banner on the Hospital claims that they have brought more services to Torrington, but many of the so-called ‘new services’ are in fact not. Also we now know, despite their claims of success, that there have been many complaints about these services, but it suits the Trust to ignore them. We could say that we now have fewer services! We used to have two family planning sessions per week; more consultant clinics; an ENT service; a minor injury unit; more inpatient beds; more midwives and our health visiting service wasn’t managed by Virgin – to name but a few. Who are they trying to kid? Torrington people who used the well-loved hospital and its services are well aware of what we had before, and know the hospital is a shadow of its former self. Trying to fill it up with non-health care services, will not fool anyone. Furthermore, the steering group now deciding on the ‘new’ services for Torrington is run behind closed doors (at the insistence of the NHS). Even should we want to be part of this decision making process or just observe, we are not allowed! This is another example of the lack of openness, so characteristic of the ‘Torrington Test of Change’ and the Oversight Committee. When the NHS closed Torrington beds because of ‘under occupancy’, it was in fact 85% occupied and fully staffed. Where did all these community hospital nurses go? At an Ilfracombe Town Council meeting regarding their bed closures, Ms Diamond (Trust Chief Executive) stated that the ‘temporary’ closure of beds was caused by a ‘temporary’ shortage of registered nurses, which she promised to remedy shortly. Since then, how many RNs have been trained for employment in North Devon? Is the Ilfracombe closure truly ‘temporary’ or yet another way to plunder the community beds for financial gain to be substituted with a cheap community service? The reality of ‘enhanced’ community care is that North Devon has an overnight nursing service comprising of two registered nurses from 8pm till 2am and one from 2-8am, based in Barnstaple and covering an area from Ilfracombe to Holsworthy, for a population of roughly166,500 (a third of whom are over 65). North Devon was promised a safe well-funded community service to replace the beds taken. A Trust spokesperson recently admitted to the Devon County Council scrutiny committee, that no extra money had been put into community care since the hospital was closed. This can only be an overstretched and unsafe service. It would have shown more respect if Ms Diamond had been open and honest with the Devon public. We in North Devon have lost confidence in the people who run our NHS. Anne Wardman

Response from the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust Devon County Council’s Health & Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee have set up a task group to review the home-based model of care in the Torrington area. The group is collating a vast amount of data and information, some of which will help to answer the queries raised by STITCH. We look forward to receiving the findings once they are published.
News from STITCH
I
f the NDDH Trust repeat their story of success often enough, they hope that our community will swallow the bitter pill of creeping privatisation of services. The only new service at our hospital is the scanner - the other services already existed and have just been relocated from elsewhere in the town. We know the true impact that the closure of our inpatient beds has had on our sick and vulnerable residents. Evidence shows us that all too often patients are being discharged at 2 and 3 in the morning - with no thought as to how they can get home. In a recent case, the patient was told he should get a taxi - which at £60 from Barnstaple to Torrington is hardly a viable option - or perhaps he would like to walk to Barnstaple bus station! Whilst the patient had received some treatment, he was still far from well, so where is the duty of care that everyone deserves? Where is the compassion and plain common sense? This approach is inhuman. We at STITCH had a meeting recently with our MP, and provided him with more patient stories to add to those that still have not been properly addressed from two years ago. He has promised to take them all to the Trust and get answers. The ‘system’ as it’s called, cannot succeed while home-based care has not been proven to be better than the 24/7 care previously given in our community hospital. Red alerts are common, touching black all too often. This is common knowledge to Torrington folk But the Trust think they can pull the wool over our eyes by continually denying it. They say that they have held lots of community meetings, talked to people and are aware of their needs and concerns. In my view this exercise has been a total waste of time and taxpayers’ money, and achieved nothing at all. Staff are doing their best to cope, whilst morale at NDDH is at an all-time low, but there is nothing to indicate that an improvement in services is imminent. Margaret Brown, Chair STITCH

Happy 15th Birthday to The Soap Kitchen
T
he Soap Kitchen is celebrating 15 years in Torrington this year. How time flies and what changes we have seen in the business. We continue to sell our range of handmade soap and toiletries in our South Street shop, and will be gradually introducing some exciting new products to celebrate. Since we established our business, handmade soap is now more readily available and our wholesale business supplies many other companies following this trend. The Soap Kitchen is a niche business that has grown over time, and helped inspire soap-making as a hobby in the UK. To celebrate our involvement in the craft industry, we will be selling our popular kits in the shop along with a variety of other products to inspire creativity. We will also continue to stock our range of gifts, incense, oils, cards and wrap, introducing new lines on a regular basis. We are happy to provide a ‘click and collect’ service from our Torrington shop for all the lovely ingredients and oils we sell on our website www.thesoapkitchen.co.uk. The website has grown with our business over the years and has recently had a makeover. Customers are also welcome to order in the shop, our staff are always happy to help. Thank you to all our customers over the past 15 years, we look forward to continuing our presence in the town. Best wishes Richard and Lesley Phillips, The Soap Kitchen.

Round The Tree Race
T
Bluebell walking!
S
pring again at last, and signs of new life are returning to the Commons. We have organised a bluebell walk in good time to see the glorious spectacle of a haze of blue on the woodland floor. Undoubtedly, you will see many other interesting spring arrivals on the way. Meet us at the Old Bowling Green, Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May at 2pm.
Clearance programme
Many people have asked us about the amount of clearing back which has been going on lately. As we have reported before, the Commons is a controlled wilderness, and if we didn’t keep things under control it would soon be overtaken by bracken, brambles and ‘invasive’ varieties of common trees, which would kill off the wide diversity of flora and fauna we enjoy today. Many native Torritonians will remember the Commons of years ago; a wide open space that was kept in check by grazing sheep and goats which are no longer around to help us, so our ranger Al Mitchell and his team of workers have to do that instead. They are clearing selected areas to allow other varieties to flourish and offer the most impressive views that have been obscured over the years.
Horse riding
The rainfall this winter has meant that some areas of the Commons, including favourite pathways, have become something of a quagmire. Unfortunately, whilst most responsible horse riders have kept to the designated routes, a few have helped to turn some paths into
virtual no-go areas. We hope that the horse riding community will help us return the Commons to its proper condition by riding responsibly, and letting us know when they see others causing damage. Unbelievably, some have even been seen cantering along pathways, which is potentially dangerous for unsuspecting walkers who have a right to be there.
And unfortunately…
…I have to write about isolated acts of selfishness, carelessness or downright vandalism on the Commons. We continue to receive reports of antisocial individuals, who ride bicycles, allow their dogs to litter the Commons or even ride motorbikes, doing damage to ecologically sensitive areas. These are all clear breaches of the bye-laws and the Conservators will take action when these individuals are caught. If you see any unlawful activity on the Commons, please let us know by phoning 01805 462463. Take notes, record number plates, take photos, even give us names if you can – but do not put yourself at risk! Steve Jones, Chairman

he Torrington May Fair is upon us, and the Round The Tree race will again be part of the celebrations. Organised by Torrington AAC running club, the tough three-mile route makes best use of some of Torrington’s spectacular scenery. Starting in the Square, the course takes runners down through the commons and into Taddiport. Once past the tree, there’s a relatively flat stretch following Rolle Road before a final climb past the monument and back into the town. There are always warm cheers through the closing stages, which is a real boost to even the most tired legs. More importantly, there are a couple of pubs within staggering distance of the finish. This isn’t a race for the super athletes, it’s a challenge for all abilities. I’m told every year that people are put off because they don’t want to finish last. My response is simple, “You won’t be last, and you’ll beat all those people that didn’t bother trying.” So, have a go and help us keep this event strong in our town’s traditions. This year’s event takes place on Friday 6th May. There are separate races for juniors, women and men. Race entry can be completed before the event, please find the entry form at torringtonaac.org, or sign up on the evening. Also, find the ‘Torrington Round the Tree Race 2016’ Facebook page. Fancy dress is not essential, but always welcome. For the first time ever, all finishers will receive a free technical t-shirt as well as a memento. The last few years have seen an excellent turnout. So, either as a spectator or as a runner, we look forward to seeing you there. Michael Newcombe, Torrington AAC

e would like to update everyone with what we’ve been up to recently! After an excellent and well-supported home show last autumn, we’re pleased to say we’ve kept up the winning streak! Nathan Board (age 14) went to Weymouth before Christmas and boxed Oliver Carr from Weymouth Boxing Club. After a tactful first round, the bout opened up and Nathan began working behind his left jab. His fast combinations and solid punching ensured that he took the second and third rounds, gaining Nathan the well-deserved points decision. Excellent work Nathan, and there is a possibility of a rematch with his opponent in Weymouth again in April. In January we took Jack Pledger and Charlie Golder to box away at Plympton. Jack Pledger (age 12) had a re-match with Elliot Coldwell from Intense Boxing Club, Plymouth. He boxed him at Torrington on our last show and lost on points. But this time, straight from the bell, Southpaw Jack went forward throwing rights and lefts. He kept this up for all three rounds, gaining the unanimous decision from the judges. Excellent effort and it’s hoped to get a deciding bout in the future. Charlie Golder (age 14), had his first competitive bout, and was up against the more experienced Donald Walshaw, also from Intense Boxing Club, Plymouth. Charlie boxed with a great deal of caution in the first round, and was very defensive. However, in the second round Charlie came forward more, and in the final round was giving as good as he got.

Unfortunately, after the slow start Charlie was unable to make up the deficit and lost on a very close decision. Great effort and we look forward to seeing your next bout. Last month, Billy Mann (age 12) had his first bout and went to Bristol to box against the more experienced, and taller, Nigel Lewis. After a nervous first round, he came out with much more confidence, boxing behind a strong left hand. In the final round he came out and dominated it, ensuring a unanimous decision. Well done Billy and we look forward to seeing your progression in the future! We currently have a good number of juniors training with us, and we have a new wave of medicals coming through, which will see a lot more boxers stepping into the ring to represent our club. We are always looking for more seniors, and we are also hoping to see some of our ladies progress from boxfit to actually boxing for us competitively in the ring, watch this space! Our fundraiser Paul Halling has been working tirelessly for us to secure funds specifically for training equipment for our boxers, thank you Paul you really are doing a fantastic job. And as always, we must thank our dedicated coaches who do what they do voluntarily; without them none of it would be possible. Torrington Police Amateur Boxing Club

Council Unveil New Cash Payment Solution in Torridge
L
ast year Torridge District Council announced that from 1st April 2016 it would no longer accept cash payments at its Council-run offices. An alternative option to make cash payments at Post Offices has existed for many years, and while this will continue it has now been supplemented through the PayPoint network service operating at many shops and garages across the district. The 21 locations include many wellknown stores and a full list can be found on the Council’s website or by enquiry at its offices. The PayPoint network was established in 1996 and offers a simple, reliable and secure method to pay bills. From 11th March, the Council will be sending out new bar coded bills for such things as Council Tax, and these can be simply scanned at PayPoint locations during any payment transaction. This straightforward solution will probably be familiar to many of the Council’s customers already paying for other things through the network. However the straightforward and reliable nature of the process was a key factor in the Council’s choice of partner to extend the availability of payment options and locations. British Native Flowers to Grow in Your Garden Cytisus scoparius
Volunteer for the Library & TIC
T
he brilliant golden yellow pea-like flowers of this vigorous shrub make this a most attractive and easy garden plant. We know it as broom and indeed the dried, twiggy branches were used to make brooms in olden times, as well as being used for fodder and bedding; even the twigs and flowers could be used to make an infusion which acted as a diuretic. Certainly, broom was once a very important crop for the rural economy, particularly in heathland areas, just like its prickly cousin, gorse. Broom flowers from April until July; it is richly scented and very attractive to pollinating insects. It is very similar in appearance to gorse but lacks those spiteful prickles, making it a much easier plant to deal with! Broom can reach a height of up to 9 feet (3m approx) and is usually upright in habit. There is a prostrate version which can be found growing on coastal cliffs in Cornwall, Wales, western Ireland and the great shingle spit at Dungeness in Kent. The leaves of broom are very small and three foliate (a bit like a trefoil), silky-hairy when young but not on mature plants. The seedpods resemble small peapods and often can be heard splitting open on a hot day, seeds scattering about. There are a number of cultivars available nowadays that are not as vigorous as the native, and which also come in various colours including rose-pink, pale cream, red and yellow. They are easy to grow, preferring lime-poor soil that is reasonably well drained, such as a dry bank, verge or coastal heaths and woodland edges. Fleur
Good Times for Torrington Golf Club!
A
great start for the club so far this year! Our mens’ team won through the first two rounds of the Mail on Sunday, beating Highbullen at home and Libbaton away, and Mark Hill and Steve Baker won their first round match in the Daily Mail Foursomes, beating Saunton Artisans at home. Considering the awful weather over the past few weeks, the course is in fantastic condition and we have a ‘Taster Day’ scheduled for Sunday May 1st when we hope that anyone considering golf will come along and give it a try – with a special reduced membership fee for the remainder of the year for anyone joining on the day. Everyone is welcome, just come along to meet the team and enjoy the friendly club atmosphere. We have members of all ages and abilities at Torrington - no one is too young or too old to enjoy golf! In Loving Memory of Brian John Broadhurst
T
he family would like to thank everyone for attending the memorial service at St.Michael’s in Torrington for Brian, back in January. We were overwhelmed by the support and kind words, and Brian would have been too. A huge thank you to Clive and all of the bell ringers, both local and from the Devon Guild of Ringers, it was so lovely to hear the bells being rung in all of their glory, and to have so many of his friends ringing for him; he loved bell ringing, and was so looking forward to being able to ring again, unfortunately this was not to be.
A special thanks too, to Andrew and Janice Gist, who helped and provided a truly personal touch for Brian, they were both friends, and fellow bell ringers. Brian’s interests were far and wide, from bell ringing, to wood turning, to vintage tractors, and Formula 1, and more in-between. Brian touched the hearts of so many and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and everyone that knew him. With your help a cheque for £350 is being sent to the Stroke Unit at NDDH, who were so supportive and caring in his last days. Thank you again, from all of his family.
40th Anniversary Year for Taw and Torridge Coaches
L
ast month, 5th March marked the 40th anniversary year for Taw and Torridge Coaches. The company began in 1965, when Tony Hunt left school and joined his father John’s car, garage, lorry and school bus company in Merton. The garage is still in operation today. Over the last 40 years, the business has grown, with the buying of other coach firms including Loverings of Combe Martin, SwanTours of Bath and TW coaches of South Molton. Today, the company also provides an executive shuttle service and a vintage and classic car fleet. A special 24-passenger 1950’s vintage coach heads up the fleet which also includes 1927, 1931,1932, & 1936 Rolls Royces, a 1950 Bentley and a 1961 Jaguar 3.8 Mk 2. Taw and Torridge is still a family concern today, as Tony is joined by his wife Linda, daughter Tracey, son Mark and son-in-law Chris. On Saturday 5th March Tony, Linda, Tracey, Mark and Chris celebrated their 40 years’ in business, at the Barnstaple Hotel with staff, family, friends, clients and suppliers. We have also taken delivery of two brand new Mercedes coaches. Tony has built a company that values and looks after its clients and employees. Family values extend throughout the business resulting in staff retention and enabling expansion with confidence.
Memories Unknown
I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. I think of you in silence I often speak your name All I have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is my keepsake with which I’ll never part God has you in His keeping I have you in my heart.

Eat with Your Neighbours for Eden Project’s Big Lunch
T
he aim of the Eden Project’s Big Lunch is to get people across the UK to eat with their neighbours in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. This year’s official Big Lunch date is Sunday 12th June, the same day as The Patron’s Lunch which celebrates the Queen’s 90th birthday and her patronage of over 600 charities and organisations. A ‘Big Lunch’ doesn’t have to be complicated – a coffee morning, bring-and-share lunch, afternoon tea, a cup of tea in your front garden – and it doesn’t have to take place on 12th June. It’s a great way to get involved with your community and make new acquaintances. Interest can be registered at www. thebiglunch.com or ring 0845 850 8181.

How does micro chipping work?
M
icro chipping your pet can be done in a short 10-minute appointment. The vet or vet nurse simply injects the microchip (which is smaller than a grain of rice) under your dog or cat’s skin at the back of the neck. It is a very quick and relatively painless procedure. Each chip carries What happens if I need to update its own unique code. Once your details my contact details but I have lost are linked to the microchip, (which the my certificate? veterinary practice staff will do for you), if If your pet was chipped a long time your pet is lost and taken ago and you have since th to a veterinary practice “From April 6 this year, lost the certificate and it becomes law that all you do not know which or rescue centre they will dogs must be micro be scanned and the code database your pet’s will be matched up to microchip is registered chipped” your contact details. with, don’t panic, this is Many people put off not a big problem! If you do not know your their home after climbing pet’s microchip number, just through an open window of a nice warm pop them into your veterinary practice car!! A microchip can help ensure their where he/she can be scanned. Only you safe return home to their relieved owner! as the owner can change the details.
Where are my details stored?
Your contact details will be kept on a database, such as the national PetLog database. It is most important that your details are kept up to date. You will be sent a certificate from the relevant database when your pet has been micro chipped. If your contact details change you will need to contact the database that the code is registered with.
What is the new law regarding micro chipping?
From April 6th this year, it becomes law that all dogs must be micro chipped. This means that your pet can easily be traced back to you if he or she is lost. Remember, having your pet micro chipped ensures the best chance of getting your beloved pet back. Hatchmoor Vets

Torrington and District Dog Training Club
T
orrington and District Dog Training Club was started in February 1983 as a non-profit making community asset and has continued without a break, apart from during the foot and mouth outbreak. Initially training classes were held at the Eric Palmer Centre but, in 2005, this became unavailable to us so a move was made to the village hall in Alverdiscott. This was a happy move for us as the hall is larger and the facilities are excellent. Since we do not need to make a profit, our charges are very reasonable and we operate an open door policy. This means there is no fixed set of sessions; you may come to as many or as few as you wish, with no upfront charges! We like you to attend a couple of sessions, at £1 a time, then, if you like us you will need to join the club for a fee of £3, or £4 for a family membership. Classes continue to be £1. Classes are held on Thursday evenings and we have beginners/puppy classes at 7pm and 7.30pm, this is to ensure that the classes are not too full. Ring craft is at 8pm and then advanced obedience at 8.30pm. Our trainer, Mrs Bryn Harfield has been with the club since 1984 and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the training classes. The club holds at least two events a year, the ‘Good Dog Tests’, which are held at the end of the summer term and a Christmas party at which we have games and a ‘bring and share’ supper. We also usually hold a fun dog show sometime during the year.

he Barnstaple Ladies Choir performed over 24 concerts in 2015, raising money for Charities & Churches all over North Devon & beyond. We already have 20 bookings for this year including two in Somerset. The Choir was formed in 1984 and our Musical Director Mary Chant is well known in local musical theatre and is a busy singing teacher. There are 36 ladies in the choir and our repertoire consists of songs from the shows, popular and sacred music. We are extremely lucky to have Peggy Spiers as our accompanist, but we do need to find someone who might be willing to help with the workload of concerts and practices or who would be willing to step in at the last minute if Peggy is not available. We rehearse on Tuesday nights at Fremington Methodist Church, from 7.30-9pm and there is a small payment available. If anyone is interested in helping us by becoming an Assistant Accompanist, please could they contact Mary on 01271 860500. five to ten days for the vaccine to take effect so it is important to get the flu jab before flu is about. I’d urge everyone eligible for the flu vaccine, particularly those in the clinical at risk groups, to get vaccinated as soon as they are able. Protect yourself early to minimise the risk of getting flu. Flu can be a serious illness, particularly for those in an ‘at risk’ group. It can result in a spell in hospital, and sadly flu kills. The best way to protect yourself is to be vaccinated.

March in the Rosemoor Allotments
F
ebruary wasn’t the kindest month with regards to weather, however, as the month came to an end the sun began to shine and the allotment plots became a hive of activity. The allotment keepers made the best of the dry weather, and opened up their double digging, frantically working away whilst the good weather prevailed. The beginning of March was time for the allotmenteers to receive their second lesson of the course. This time the subject was early seed sowing, always a popular task at this time of year, as we begin to leave the long dark days of winter behind and head into spring. During this lesson the group sowed their lettuce and cabbage seed, along with their broad beans and peas. They were also taught the correct way of sowing each crop, as well as the different types of growing medium (compost), and the various pieces of equipment to use. The pots and trays of seeds are now laid out on benches in the polytunnel to germinate, with a watchful gaze upon them from expectant allotment keepers waiting for the first signs of life to

he Torrington in Bloom Committee would like to pass sincere condolences to Val Knight and her family at the sad loss of her husband, Mike, who died in February. Mike and Val were long-standing and hard-working members of Torrington in Bloom who, for many years, planted and maintained the Clock Tower in the town square. Mike was always ready and willing to help out wherever he could and many of you will have seen him and Val busy weeding, dead-heading, watering and generally helping to keep the town looking bright and colourful. Mike shall be greatly missed by Torrington in Bloom. April sees the launch of our Best Garden competition and the entry form is on the opposite page. Some forms will be kept at Whiskers Pet stores and Duffy’s Home Hardware. You can also drop off your completed forms there. Those of you who won a trophy last year, please could you phone me (number at the end of this article) to arrange collection at a convenient time for all. The closing date for this year’s competition is 30th June. Sarah Chesters has very kindly agreed to judge the entries again this year and the date of judging will be Tuesday 26th July (I know this is quite late on in the season for some people, but a winning garden will contain things that give all-year-round interest). Cherry Hammon, Chair Torrington in Bloom Association, 01805 625788 emerge. The lettuces and cabbages will be pricked out into individual pots later in the month, to grow on to good sized young plants, then will be transplanted outside into the ground to grow on to maturity. Meanwhile, the peas and broad beans will be allowed to grow on in the pots they have been sown in, before being planted out into rows on the allotments. Elsewhere in the garden, spring is well underway and colour is returning to the beds in the form of flowering trees and shrubs and early flowering perennials. The apple orchard and the crab apples throughout the garden will look fabulous towards the end of the month. The rhododendrons, especially in Lady Anne’s Garden, are a riot of colour; pinks, purples, reds, yellows and whites light up the borders and woodland walks along
with pieris, magnolias and ornamental cherries. Areas of the garden planted with woodland lovers such as the Cherry Garden and the outer reaches of the Formal Gardens are at their peak in April and May, containing favourites such as Erythronium, Anemone, Astrantia and Narcissus. In the boggy areas Lysichiton, with their huge spathes of bright yellow or white are always a talking point for the visitors. This is an exciting time in the garden, when winter is well and truly behind us, favourite plants are flowering once again and the vegetable plots are cultivated and seeds sown.
