Coyotes experience behavioral and biological changes as seasons shift from fall to winter .

• Coyotes disperse. Pups born in spring are now full y grown and typically leave their family pack Most coyotes, born to the pack’s alpha male and female, venture out to establish their own territory .
• Coyotes search for a mate. Coyotes without partners begin to seek for a mate. Those that have lef t their pack may pair up to claim new territory, while some roam alone as transients without a territory.
• Coyotes mating season begins. Starting in January coyote mate only once a year. The alpha male and female of the pack mate during winter then give birth to litter of pups in spring.
As the alpha pair prepare to mate and the female becomes pregnant, coyotes seek safe, quiet spaces to den, such as hillside areas with overgrown foliage, culverts, or small hiding spots offering protective cover.
By proactively managing your property before denning season, you can discourage coyotes from settling nearby. Taking the steps below reduces the chances of coyote visit ing or establishing a den in your yard.
✓ Complete the At-Home Coyote Prevention Checklist. Walk through the exterior of your home. Are there attractants that invite wildlife to your yard? Coyotes are less likely to stay in areas with no access to shelter, food or water.
✓ Clear potential den s ites. Even though urban coyotes are accustomed to loud noises, cars and the presence of people they prefer to go unnoticed. Dense brush and foliage are ideal coyote hiding spaces as they search for food. Trim ground-level shrubbery to make your backyard uncomfortable and unappealing.
✓ Secure openings outside your home. Hiding spaces, such as a porch, deck, and shed , offer coyotes a place to den and hunt rodents. Cover open entrances to your home to avoid a den.
• Coyotes mate once a year.
• Studies indicate coyotes are a monogamous species. They mate for life.
• Only the alpha pair (one male and one female) in a pack mate to produce a litter. Other coyotes in the pack help feed and care for the pups.
