A scene from Sunrise Over Lake Van

by Roubina Shnorhokian and Katya Derhovagimian The 6th annual Pomegranate Film Festival presented by Hamazkayin, which will be held December 1- 4, promises to showcase a wide selection of thoughtprovoking documentaries, shorts and feature-length films. This year POM is set to host a healthy dose of captivating and films -some with Canadian premieres and others with North American and world premieres. The Festival kicks off on Thursday December 1st at the Hamazkayin Theatre with Armenia Now, a series of short films contemplating 20 years of independence, with all proceeds being donated to Himnadram's efforts to reconstruct the cultural & educational centre in Shushi, Artsakh. The late evening screening consists of the world premiere of the most highly anticipated film produced in Yerevan, The Jubilee Visitor, accompanied by Eric Nazarian's award winning short film Bolis. Friday December 2nd at 7 pm, POM moves to Toronto s prestigious Regent Theatre where it will feature the much anticipated viewing of Snows of Kilimanjaro directed by French-Armenian director, Robert Guediguian. The newest Guediguian film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and garnered three sold-out screenings at the Master s series during TIFF 2011. Filmed in Marseilles, the

story follows a middle-aged couple, Michel and Marie-Claire. Michel, a recently retired dockworker, plans on traveling with his wife to Africa, but the couple is robbed of their money and plane tickets before their departure. He soon discovers that one of the robbers is a former colleague who was laid-off and has a young family to support. This unexpected discovery deeply challenges the couple s value system, taking the audience along a thoughtprovoking discussion of class and crossgenerational struggles in modern-day society. Following the film will be the 9:20 screening of Here, the largest budget American movie filmed in Armenia to date. Saturday's eclectic collection of films begins with the Saturday Morning Six Pack featuring short films by local directors Kalen Artinian, Serge Keshishian & Ara Sagherian. Rounding out the Toronto trio are three more unique shorts, including Hayastan: Pays Imaginere about the efforts of Armenia's national rugby team, Don t Get Lost Children, displaying the plight of Armenian properties in Turkey that will now be returned such as a camp for Armenian orphans where Hrant Dink spent his childhood, and finally the sentimental French film Mephisto that follows a young woman coping with the loss of her lyrical father. Saturday will also feature a Pomegranate first, Spotlight On Armenian Women, with the screenings of My Grandma s Tattoos and Finding Zabel

Yesayan. Afternoon screenings will continue with the Tales From The Diaspora series featuring the North American debut of The Last Armenian in Turkey and the final film before the Gala festivities begin will feature Al Pacino's multiple Emmy Award winning performance as American-Armenian physician Dr. Jack Kevorkian in the highly entertaining film You Don t Know Jack, with a truly star-studded cast that includes Susan Sarandon & John Goodman. The POM VI Gala Film will take place at the Armenian Youth Centre, in the Hamazkayin Theatre, with the North American premiere of Sunrise over Lake Van. Directed by Artak Igityan and Vahan Stepanyan, it focuses on three generations of men grappling with their Armenian identity and family life in modern America. Garapet, the grandfather, burns the Turkish flag in front of the Turkish embassy every year on April 24th as a way to deal with his traumatic memory of the Genocide. He finds himself at odds with his son and grandson, the latter who romantically pursues a young girl of Turkish background. Sunrise Over Lake Van was impressively filmed all over the world and includes scenes in the United States, France, Western Armenia (Turkey), and Armenia. The film casts a group of international stars including: Jean Pierre Nshanyan (USA), Aren Vatyan (Russian Federation), Arevik Martirosayn (France), and Gunish Zan (Turkey).
