8th Annual POM to Celebrate Legacy of Armenian Cultural Icons Fine Selection of Fims to be Screened
by Roubina Shnorhokian The Hamazkayin Cultural and Educational Society of Toronto announced its 8th annual Pomegranate Film Festival (POM VIII) which will take place November 710 at the Armenian Youth Centre's Hamazkayin Theatre. This year the festival will celebrate the legacy of Armenian cultural giants Paradjanov, Saroyan and Daniel Varoujan. During the 4 days of the festival over 30 films from 15 different countries will be screened. POM VIII will present the North American Premiere of Paradjanov. The acclaimed biopic was selected as the Ukrainian entry for Best Foreign Film at the 86th Academy Awards. French-Armenian director Serge Avedikian s feature film captures the fascinating life of artist Sergei Paradjanov, whose vision was esteemed by fellow geniuses Fellini and Godard. The film is a wonderful follow-up to Avedikian s Le Chien d Histoire, which garnered huge success at Cannes and was presented by Atom Egoyan at POM V where it was awarded Best Short Film.
Avedikian s portrayal of the lead role highlights the skills of a seasoned actor, best known for his roles in Aram (POM II), Le Voyage en Arménie, We Drank the Same Water (POM III), Bonded Parallels (POM IV), The Army of Crime (POM V) and Bad Father (POM VII). Avedikian will be in attendance for the Festival Gala, which will include Paradjanov's Photo Art Exhibit from Yerevan, appearing for the first time in Toronto. Photographer Kaloust Babian, one of the few individuals to visit Paradjanov while he was under house arrest during the Soviet regime, will make an introductory presentation about the film giant. Festival attendees will relish director and Lebanese television producer Nigol Bezjian s two films, I Left My Shoes in Istanbul and Milk, Carnation and Godly Song: The Legacy of Daniel Varoujan. The latter will kick off the film festival, where Bezjian will engage in an intimate Paradjanov stars Serge Avedikian as brilliant director Sergey Paradjanov.
