POM Announces Opening Night Line-Up Dedicated to Arstakh
The Pomegranate Film Festival will take place from November 15-19th in Toronto. The opening night of the festival will be held at Fairview Cineplex, where two remarkable drama features will be screened. Jivan Avetisyan's acclaimed The Last Inhabitant will have its North American premiere on opening night. The film is a moving story based on the writings of Tsovinar Khachatryan, set during the ArmenianAzerbaijan conflict. An Armenian man named Abgar is left stranded in the village of Gyurjevan, after the Armenian inhabitants are forced out in a mass deportation in 1988. Alone in a shrinking enemy ring, Abgar chooses to wait for his daughter who has witnessed the death of her husband to mob brutality. The film has gained substantial international recognition, having been screened at the Golden Apricot Film Festival in Yerevan and the renowned Venice Film Festival. This full-length film is a poignant follow up to Avedisyan's previous short films, Broken Childhood and Tevanik, which were both previously screened at POM. Avedisyan will be traveling from Artsakh to present the film in Toronto and address the audience. As a co-production between five countries, the film presents a spectacular cast including the award-winning Sos Jamibekyan, Homayoun Ershadi, Canadian Anne Bedian and Aleksandr Khachatryan. Additionally, Serj Tankian, famed vocalist of System of a Down, wrote the haunting yet beautiful score for the film. It was recorded by the
Armenian Philharmonic and Hover Chamber Choir. This years films will also include The Line, also known as Gyank ou Griv in Armenian. Director Mher Mkrtchyan presents an engaging historical romance, exploring the story of a young man who must become a soldier in the context of the Armenian-Azerbaijani War. Mkrtchyan is a talented script writer, producer and director who now resides in Moscow. The Line was screened at the prestigious Golden Apricot Film Festival in Yerevan. Actor Samvel Tadevosyan won best actor at the Anahit Armenian Film Academy Awards and POM attendees may recognize him from his previous role in Bravo Virtuoso, presented in Toronto last year. The Line is a remarkable tale of heroism and the complex ways in which war impacts love and relationships. The film ultimately celebrates the special bonds between childhood friends, bringing both smiles and tears as the protagonist s grapple with the Arstakh war. The Festival will also present two more films about Artsakh at the Hamazkayin Theatre on POM s closing night on Sunday, November 19th, including the brand new sequel to The Line as well as Yeva, an ArmenianIranian co-production which has been designated as Armenia's entry to the Oscars for Best International Film. The latter, directed by Anahit Abad, tells the story of Yeva, a young woman who finds refuge in Karabagh after the tragic death of her husband.
