Coping with a Pet’s Departure
Our pets hold a special place in our hearts, and their absence can feel devastating Whether missing, surrendered, re-homed, or passed on, filling the void they leave behind can feel overwhelming.
Regardless of the circumstances, the sadness of losing a pet is beyond our scope of understanding. For those who are seeking a more creative outlet for their emotions, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Collaborative is hosting a creative writing workshop that encourages individuals to explore and express their emotions through the healing power of writing.
The Pet Loss & Grief: Writing to Heal workshop is a free, 6-week workshop, that will be held from July 6th to August 10th, 2023 Led by Nadja LubiwHazard, a veterinarian and writer, the workshop encourages participants to write and reflect on their cherished memories with their departed companions, offering guidance that will help them to move forward and adjust to life without their beloved animals.

Toronto Humane Society's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council is thrilled to share its first DEI Action Plan. The Council is confident that executing this multifaceted plan will lead us to fulfill our mission of fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging for all members of Toronto Humane Society’s community.
At Toronto Humane Society, we recognize that advancing DEI requires more than just lofty ambitions and superficial reforms. Our welldefined and comprehensive plan is a testament to our commitment to promoting long-term, meaningful change within our organization
Over the next year, the Council, with support from the People & Culture team and representatives from other departments, will work on implementing the plan as well as tracking and measuring our overall progress. Our priorities include developing a DEI learning library,

Change in Animal Care Training
A new way to onboard and cross-train volunteers in all our animal care roles to match how we train new Animal Care Worker staff and Placement students has taken full effect.
All new Canine, Feline, and Special Species Care volunteers will still be attending the Volunteer Orientation and be assigned the same online training. Once they have completed their online training modules, they will be scheduled for their first shadow shifts For their first few shifts, volunteers will be partnered with a staff member to learn all aspects of their role, including cleaning and husbandry tasks, which is part of all animal care job descriptions Volunteers will no longer have to attend an in-person training session prior to starting their shifts and animal handling training will be provided after they start their job shadowing.
If you would like to get cross-trained in any species of care roles, please email Chris Buchner at cbuchner@torontohumanesoceity.com to get set up with all the online training modules first.
After you complete those modules, Chris will arrange a day and time for your first day of job shadowing.
If you are a current Animal Care Volunteer and would like to learn the cleaning and husbandry tasks, please contact the Shelter Supervisor on duty. They’ll pair you with a staff member for job shadowing.
If you previously booked an animal training course, there will be no changes – the training will move forward as usual If you don’t have a current animal care training booked, please do not use the booking links any more to book your first level training courses If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out to Volunteer Services or a Shelter Care Supervisor anytime.
Feline Care TalentLMS Trainings
Dr. Jacklyn Ellis and her team have completed a series of fantastic TalentLMS online training courses for level one and two Feline staff and volunteers Over the next week, these training courses will be added to all Feline volunteers' accounts. If you are a level one Feline volunteer and would like to move up to level two, these modules will be mandatory For all other feline volunteers, while these modules are not mandatory, we strongly recommend you complete them for your own learning, especially if it's been a while since you’ve attended an inperson training If you have any questions, please reach out to Volunteer Services
Summer Vacations
To help us to continue to care for the animals in our care during the summer months, we ask volunteers who are still in town to consider accepting a few extra volunteer shifts.
If you are planning on taking some time off this summer, please remove your shifts on your Volunteer Information Centre and if you are missing more than 2 shifts in a row. Please email Volunteer Services so that they can take note of your absence Let us join forces to ensure that our animals have an enriching and fulfilling summer, even when our cherished volunteers are enjoying some well-deserved relaxation. We are immensely grateful for your dedication and support, which

July Town Hall
Our next town hall will take place on Thursday, July 27th from 5:30PM – 6:30PM. Like the previous town hall meetings, this one will be offered both in-person in our boardroom and online via Zoom
The town hall is an opportunity for volunteers and foster parents to learn new information or hear updates as well as be able to share feedback with several departments including the volunteer department, foster department, shelter care, and adoption department. Volunteers Needed for the Paws in the Park Committee
Our largest fundraising event, Paws in the Park, is in the planning process and this year we’re onboarding 6-8 volunteers to join the Paws in the Park Committee to help with the event.
These volunteers will assist with soliciting food and/or marketplace vendors, promoting the event to companies in the Beaches area, and liaising with participants to help them raise more funds Volunteers who are comfortable with fundraising and asking people and organizations to participate, donate, and support would thrive in this role. The role is flexible.

Volunteer Spotlight of the Month
We are so grateful for all our volunteers; we rely heavily on your support to meet our operational needs We want to take time once a month to extend our thanks to a volunteer who has had a positive impact at Toronto Humane Society based on staff/volunteer feedback
This Month we would like to shine a spotlight on August C.!
Even though August has only been a volunteer for four months, they have already shown themselves to be an incredible asset to Toronto Humane Society. Since February 2023 they have already ascended to a purple-level walker! That is an incredible feat Moreover, in the month of April they had contributed the most amount of canine enrichment time of all our volunteers, with a whopping 1,496 minutes of volunteering logged! To understand the motivation behind these amazing statistics, we just need to go back to see how it all began.
For a while now, August has been working towards becoming a professional dog trainer, and even though they completed an online certificate program based in BC, they were still “searching for an opportunity to get some hands-on experience working directly with dogs” Thus, becoming a volunteer at Toronto Humane Sockiety seemed to be the perfect fit. In fact, according to August, “volunteering with Toronto Humane Society turned out to be a more amazing experience than I could have possibly imagined, and I have learned so many important practical skills as well as developing a passion for helping animals within the shelter system."
Moreover, August has recently added a new role to their already illustrious volunteer resume by joining the animal bio writing team According to them, after working directly with the dogs, “I realized that my hands-on experience would be helpful in writing bios for them” They go on to explain that “getting to know each dog personally is very valuable in creating honest and detailed bios for them.” We cannot be more grateful to have August as a volunteer, they are clearly an incredible person with a lot of passion and we cannot wait to see what else they accomplish as a volunteer, and to one day soon see them become an exceptional trainer. Thank you so much for everything you do, August!

A new Pregnancy, Parental, and Adoption Leave Handbook has been created to support and empower our employees during this special phase of their lives. Valuing the well-being and happiness of everyone in our community, we strive to provide a smooth transition into parenthood Everything you need to know when planning to take a leave of absence to have or adopt a child can be found in this handbook.
This new handbook aims to address your questions on the different types of leave, navigating employment insurance when taking a pregnancy or parental leave, and special cases that may occur with pregnancy and parental leave When considering taking a pregnancy and/or parental leave, there are a few key aspects to consider which the manual covers in detail:
Understanding Your Rights and Entitlements: We provide a comprehensive overview of the legal rights and entitlements available to employees having or adopting a child, including information on pregnancy and parental leave. By familiarizing yourself with your rights, you can make informed decisions and ensure a supportive work environment.
Planning for Your Leave: Our guide outlines the step-by-step process for applying for pregnancy and/or parental leave, including the required documentation, timelines, and communication channels. We aim to simplify the administrative aspects, allowing you to focus on the well-being of yourself and your growing family
Awareness of Your Benefits and Support: We highlight the various benefits and support systems available to employees during pregnancy and parental leave These may include healthcare coverage and flexible work arrangements. We aim to foster a work-life balance that facilitates a positive and nurturing environment for anyone considering a pregnancy and/or parental leave

Wilbur Was Found with a Severely Swollen Eye
Wilbur was found abandoned in a park with a blind andseverelyswolleneye.Ourveterinariansdiagnosed glaucoma, which resulted in a sudden increase in eye pressure, followed by severe pain, redness, and loss of vision
By this point, Wilbur’s eye served only as a source of agonizing pain. He was given medication, surgery preparations, and shortly after, his eye was removed After suffering for so long, Wilbur is finally living painfree–fornow.
To determine the cause of Wilbur’s glaucoma, our veterinarians consulted with a specialist The results showed a congenital deformity that will eventually affectWilbur’sothereye.Ifhedoesnotreceivefurther treatment, the pain he fought so hard to put behind himwilllikelyreturn
Wilbur’s life has improved significantly since surgery. With the pain behind him, he is catching up on being a puppy. But he needs your support if he is going to continuelivingahappyandhealthylife

Introducing Our New “Transfer-Foster” Program
On June 28, 2023, 10 dogs arrived from the United States and 6 of them were greeted at Toronto Humane Society by their foster parents!
This was the pilot date for our new “TransferFoster” program which matches transfer dogs with foster families before their arrival. This way they’ll be able to go directly into a foster home instead of spending time in the shelter
With this program, we will be able to bring in adoptable animals even when capacity does not permit on-site
We are lucky to have an extensive foster network and believe this program can enable us to expand our life-saving capacity and transcend the restrictions of one brick-and-mortar facility
We’d like to thank the 6 foster parents for taking a leap in faith in opening your homes to these new dogs, and for helping us get this program off the ground!

Gumaro Celebrates One Year in his New Home!
Many of you may remember Gumaro, one of our longest stay dogs that came to us from Mexico. Gumaro's transition to a new life in a different country was not easy, and he encountered various medical issues along the way The first obstacle he faced was a fractured leg, which limited his physical activity, preventing him from playing with other dogs and hindering his socialization and comfort around new people and dogs Gumaro also suffered from skin allergies, a hookworm infection, dietary changes, an eye ulcer, and an ear infection while waiting for this forever home. Overcoming numerous barriers, we recognized Gumaro's resilience and tirelessly worked to find him the perfect home that he truly deserved - and all the hard work paid off when Gumaro was adopted into his perfect forever home last year.
Here is an adorable update from Gumaro’s family:
“It's been a year. A whole, amazing year. Gumi won our hearts and came home with us last June, and he's been charming everyone he's met since then
He's worked very hard on his leash manners and is now barely reactive to cars, buses, and people He's been good at working with me to redirect his frustration to playing tug with his walk toy Our summer plans are to continue to raise that reactivity threshold and to be a bit better at pulling A Bachelor of Good Boy Arts is a multiyear project and Gumi is making good progress Looking forward to many more years with this loveable goofball.”

Not only do our trainers work with the public to address unwanted concerns and behaviours, they also work with our shelter animals to lay the foundation for their new life Some of these animals may never have been exposed to any kind of training, so we recognize all the work that you do not just this week, but every day.
We simply would not be able to Improve the Lives of animals without the hard work and dedication of both our public and shelter training teams.
Both training teams enjoyed a week of social media shout-outs, a patio pita lunch, and an afternoon of snacks and games.

“Cutest Pets on Parliament Hill Awards”
The annual Cutest Pets on Parliament Hill Awards, organized by the Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI), brought together politicians and their animal companions outside the Métropolitain Brasserie in Ottawa on June 7 This exciting event, dubbed "The Hottest Vote on the Hill," showcased the adorable pets of Parliament Hill in three categories: Dog, Cat, and Other
Over 65 Senators, Members of Parliament, and members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery participated by submitting photos of their pets to CAHI's selection process The panel of four judges including our very own Dr Linda Jacobson and Dr Karen Ward faced the challenging task of narrowing down the entries to three finalists in each category As befits a democracy, the public got to choose the final winners by voting online
After careful deliberation, the first-ever "Cutest Cat" title was awarded to Shohei "Meowtani" Ohtani, the Siberian kitten, while the "Cutest Dog" achievement was awarded to the smiley Mateo In the "Other" category, Petunia the silkie chicken claimed the title, in the face of tough competition from the runner-up rabbit.
The Cutest Pets on Parliament Hill Awards served as a delightful reminder that even in the midst of political debates and deliberations, our furry and feathered friends bring joy and companionship to the lives of everyone surrounding them
