Collecting Asian Rose Species and Conserving Them at Quarryhill Thursday, Sept. 15

Bill McNamara For the past 27 years, Bill McNamara has been collecting and documenting naturally occurring plant species in the wilds of Asia. A particular focus of his expeditions is wild rose species.

His garden, Quarryhill Botanical Garden in California, has the largest collection of wild roses in the world.

Rebuilding Nature’s Relationships at Home Tuesday, Oct. 25

Douglas Tallamy Specialized relationships between wild animals and plants are the norm, not the exception. These relationships provide birds with insects and berries, disperse bloodroot seeds, pollinate goldenrod and so on. Plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. Doug will explain why this is so and how we can create beautiful gardens that support native biodiversity.

What to do with a Downpour – Ornamental Ways to Handle Rainwater Monday, Nov. 21

Sean James Our cities are largely covered by impermeable surfaces – roofs, parking lots, roads, even compacted soil – which contribute to water pollution, flooding and bank erosion in urban ravines. Sean will demonstrate how gardeners can help turn the tide on this troubling situation with beautiful water-protecting landscapes.

HORTICULTURAL THERAPY HT Certificate Program The Horticultural Therapy Certificate offers a comprehensive look at the principles and practices of the professional use of horticulture as therapy.

This four-part program focuses on the core skills and knowledge recommended for HT education by the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA).

This is an on-going program with new sessions beginning at various times.

Learn how to work with wire to create floral forms reminiscent of delicate wrought iron. Students will make a base form out of wire, which can be used over and over, and then enhance it with beautiful dried flowers. You will also learn how to dry flowers so that they retain their shape and colour. Wire and flowers are included in the cost.
