1 CORINTHIANS

1:25-30

For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, whohasbecomeforuswisdomfromGod thatis, ourrighteousness, holiness and redemption.

MATTHEW

18.10-14

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.

“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

(Matthew6:33-34)

200 HOLY FATHERS OF THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF EPHESUS

AUGUST 9

On August 9, the Armenian church commemorates the 200 Holy Fathers of the Council of Ephesus (431 AD). The third Universal Ecumenical Council, was convened inEphesus by the order of Emperor Theodosius IIto settle the Nestorian heresy.

About 200 Pontiffs attended this council, which was presided by Patriarch Cyril of Alexandria. Nestorius was the Patriarch of Constantinople, and according to his teaching there were two independent, contrasting natures in Christ: divine and human. Nestorius preached that Christ was born as a simple man and only later Divinity was settled in His Person, and therefore, the Holy Virgin Mary was not Godmother, but the mother of a simple man.

The Council approved the title of Theotokos for the Virgin Mary. Even though the Armenian Church did not participate in this Council, it accepted the canons and decisions passed during the council.

The Armenian Church recognizes the first three ecumenical councils: Council of Nicaea (325); Council of Constantinople (381); Council of Ephesus (431) and dedicated commemoration days in its Liturgical Calendar for all three.
