Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire have all landed spots in the top 10 most generous states, according to GoFundMe’s two most recent annual Giving Reports, collectively making New England the top US region for charitable giving.

Participating in community-based charitable efforts can build a culture of empathy, kindness, and civic participation, which in turn fosters stronger unity and a sense of shared responsibility. The feeling of being part of a greater whole can eventually lead to more sustainable and impactful changes that better the entire community. For Massachusetts residents, an additional incentive for charitable giving went into effect earlier this year; the State Charitable Tax Deduction provides a unique opportunity for residents to contribute to their chosen causes while also benefiting from a reduction in their state tax liability. Casa Myrna believes every relationship should be safe and healthy. Founded in 1977, we are Boston’s largest provider of shelter and support to survivors of domestic violence. Many resort to intentionally harming themselves, and over 12% seriously consider suicide. These youth are in desperate situations, often facing abuse, neglect, or extreme stress. That’s where Doc Wayne Youth Services steps in. Since 2010, Doc Wayne has been devoted to supporting the mental well-being of young people in Greater Boston. Its coaches are professionally trained to provide group therapy sessions in school gyms, using sports as a means to teach crucial mental health skills. By using sports as a vehicle for therapy, Doc Wayne creates an environment that encourages kids to participate and receive the support they need.

Located in Taunton, Mass., Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is a publicly funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans to enable them to rebuild their lives. Most of these Veterans have sustained life-altering injuries, including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, blindness, and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, allowing them to focus on family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent by HFOT has gone directly to program services, providing post-9/11 Veterans with the adapted homes they need. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live and stays in contact with them after home delivery for life. HFOT also provides a pro-bono financial planner for three years to assist in financial planning and household budgeting, in addition to homeownership education and warranty coverage to ensure that the Veteran is

From work in the Infant-Toddler Program — the first point of contact for children with visual impairments in Massachusetts — to on-campus evaluations and enrollment for children with visual impairments and disabilities, to assistive device centers in Mexico and India, Perkins School for the Blind is working tirelessly to create solutions to help more children and their families. About us:

We are a prophetic Franciscan Catholic community welcoming all people through prayer and outreach. St. Anthony Shrine, the “Church on Arch Street,” is a center for Roman Catholic ministries in Boston, staffed by the Franciscan friars. For over 70 years, The Shrine has provided a convenient setting for worship and social service ministries. We currently offer 21 Masses each week, plus an extensive schedule for confessions. Examples of our robust social service and outreach programming include: the Franciscan Food Center, the Fr. Mychal Judge Recovery and Counseling Center, Grief Ministry, Veterans Ministry, Lazarus Ministry

(funerals and burials for the homeless), Spiritual Direction, and the Rita A. DiMento Clinic for Homeless Women. St. Anthony Shrine serves a diverse population in both corporal and spiritual ministries. All are welcome at St. Anthony Shrine.

About us:

Tedy’s Team started in 2005, after Tedy Bruschi suffered a stroke at 31. Tedy had just won his third Super Bowl with the New England Patriots and returned home from his first Pro Bowl in Hawaii. Tedy and his wife, Heidi, did not know the warning signs of stroke and were unaware his symptoms were stroke-related. During his recovery, Tedy and Heidi decided they wanted to use their experience to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke and to help other survivors and their loved ones. After Tedy’s Team was created, it quickly grew into an endurance training team that helped to raise life-saving funds and awareness. Fast forward 18 years, over 1,500 alumni, numerous travel races, Falmouth Road Races, Boston Marathons, and New York City Marathons, and Tedy’s Team has raised over $9 million to support stroke and heart disease research, education, and awareness. Thanks to the support of its community, volunteers, runners, and sponsors, Tedy’s Team has created programs like the Comeback Assistance Program (CAP) and the Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

About us:

For nine-year-old Tyler, who has severe autism, everyday activities like brushing teeth, interacting with other kids, and even talking can be a challenge. Such children have needs beyond the care provided by public schools and parents. The New England Center for Children® (NECC®) helps thousands of children live their best lives by providing one-on-one special education, assistive technology, and when needed, residential care. Our mission is two-fold: helping children with autism gain the skills they need to reach their potential and preparing special education teachers and board certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) to lead programs like ours around the world. We provide comprehensive services (including speech and language, occupational therapy, adapted physical education, art, music, academics, aquatic safety, vocational training, and leisure skills) for children with autism ages three to 22. From our headquarters in Southborough, MA, our day school serves 75 students from local school districts as well as 104 students in our residential program. Through our Public School Services division, our licensed teachers professionally manage 66 special education classrooms in public schools throughout MA, NH, and VT, serving an additional 870 students. This model allows students with special needs access to best practices in skill development and educational services, while in their local schools. Our international outreach includes a school in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., serving 262 Emirati students with autism, clinics in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Qatar, and consulting services around the world. In 2006, we developed an app to deliver our curriculum online. Today, the ACE® ABA Software System is helping 13,126 students in nine countries. How do we have such an impact? Training and research are core to our mission. From on-site graduate programs in partnership with local universities,

to supervised research projects published and presented in 21 countries, NECC’s expertise has led us to international prominence in the field.

The Rare Cancer Research Foundation About us:

Researchers have limited access to rare cancer samples, while patients struggle to find information for the treatments they need. Together with more than 300 patient advocacy and research partners, the Rare Cancer Research Foundation (RCRF) is building the ecosystem that will lead to cures for rare cancers. The RCRF’s indication-agnostic approach enables scale and efficiency across cancer communities, boosting its impact in the search for cures. After getting a head start, the survival rate of these turtles increases exponentially. With a wide range of education programs, as well as well-established youth programs like the summer ZooTeen program providing employment to Boston youth, Zoo New England creates opportunities that truly bring classroom learning to life.
