tunning landscapes, historic landmarks, and deep-rooted cultures are the classic trademarks of New England, but recently the generosity of its residents has been added to that list.

Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire have all landed spots in the top 10 most generous states, according to GoFundMe’s two most recent annual Giving Reports, collectively making New England the top US region for charitable giving.

Participating in community-based charitable efforts can build a culture of empathy, kindness, and civic participation, which in turn fosters stronger unity and a sense of shared responsibility. The feeling of being part of a greater whole can eventually lead to more sustainable and impactful changes that better the entire community.

For Massachusetts residents, an additional incentive for charitable giving went into effect earlier this year; the State Charitable Tax Deduction provides a unique opportunity for residents to contribute to their chosen causes while also benefiting from a reduction in their state tax liability. This deduction is designed to encourage and recognize the generosity of all Massachusetts taxpayers.

New Englanders frequently dedicate their time, energy, and resources to a wide range of causes. Casa Myrna believes every relationship should be safe and healthy. Founded in 1977, we are Boston’s largest provider of shelter and support to survivors of domestic violence. More than 20% of young people in Massachusetts face feelings of anxiety or depression. Unfortunately, a significant number of these kids don’t receive the help they require. Many resort to intentionally harming themselves, and over 12% seriously consider suicide. These youth are in desperate situations, often facing abuse, neglect, or extreme stress.

That’s where Doc Wayne Youth Services steps in. Since 2010, Doc Wayne has been devoted to supporting the mental well-being of young people in Greater Boston. Its coaches are professionally trained to provide group therapy sessions in school gyms, using sports as a means to teach crucial mental health skills. Since 2001, our nonprofit has pursued one mission: make life better for all in Boston’s iconic state park, the Charles River Esplanade. Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts serves 20,000 girls and 9,000 adults, is the largest girl-serving organization in Massachusetts, and the 10th largest Girl Scout council in the U.S. Our youth members are in nearly every city and town across eastern Massachusetts from the Cape and Islands to Marlborough to the New Hampshire border. Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice, and we welcome non-binary youth and transgender boys in addition to anyone who identifies as a girl into our organization. Did you know, according to the Aspen Institute, youth from low-income homes stop playing sports because of financial costs at six times the rate of kids from high-income homes? Good Sports believes every child deserves access to the lifelong benefits of sports and physical activity.

By providing brand-new sports and fitness equipment, apparel, and footwear from sporting goods companies to youth organizations in high-need communities, Good Sports drives equity in youth sports for all children to experience success on and off the field.

Since its first donations to Boston programs in 2003, Good Sports has donated $14 million in equipment to Massachusetts youth organizations and over $100 million across the country. Alleviating the cost of equipment breaks down barriers to play and enables organizations to increase their roster size, improve programming, and lower costs for families. The result?

Children grow in confidence, perform better in the classroom, and develop friendships and essential teamwork and leadership skills. About us:

Located in Taunton, Mass., Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) is a publicly funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans to enable them to rebuild their lives. Most of these Veterans have sustained life-altering injuries, including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, blindness, and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, allowing them to focus on family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives.

Since its inception in 2004, nearly 90 cents of every dollar spent by HFOT has gone directly to program services, providing post-9/11 Veterans with the adapted homes they need. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live and stays in contact with them after home delivery for life. HFOT also provides a pro-bono financial planner for three years to assist in financial planning and household budgeting, in addition to homeownership education and warranty coverage to ensure that the Veteran is

Perkins School for the Blind

The global leader in education for children with disabilities for nearly 200 years, Perkins School for the Blind reaches 1.2 million children with disabilities around the world, including over 2,000 kids in Massachusetts.

Perkins has been changing children’s and families’ lives since 1829, when it was founded as a school for children who were blind by Samuel Gridley Howe in Boston. Today, Perkins focuses on the critical global need to improve access to learning for millions of children with all kinds of disabilities. There are 240 million children with disabilities around the world, many of whom are left out of classrooms and left behind in their communities, without access to education and with little hope for their future. This is Perkins’ challenge and its daily work.

Those at Perkins believe every child can learn — anywhere. That’s why Perkins is leading the way in international services for children with disabilities, building on the work of its expert campus programs in Boston to train teachers, support families, and, ultimately, help more children everywhere. From work in the Infant-Toddler Program — the first point of contact for children with visual impairments in Massachusetts — to on-campus evaluations and enrollment for children with visual impairments and disabilities, to assistive device centers in Mexico and India, Perkins School for the Blind is working tirelessly to create solutions to help more children and their families. For over 100 years, Perkins has brought educators from around the world to its campus so that, together, they can develop new

and innovative ways to teach children with disabilities in the United States and countries and cultures everywhere.

Perkins is confronting the hidden epidemic that is the leading cause of childhood blindness, Cortical or Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI), with the national CVI Center, international teacher training programs, and CVINow. org, an online support group reaching families in 185 countries. Perkins’ newly created Howe Innovation Center is accelerating the development of the disability-tech market, uniting investors and inventors with people with disabilities to create valuable tools purpose-built for true accessibility.

The Perkins Access consulting group helps hundreds of companies build websites that are genuinely accessible to users with all types of disabilities. The beloved Perkins Library supports thousands of people, including seniors, in getting access to audiobooks so they can still enjoy their love of reading even when they can no longer see. At the core of it all are the highly trained teachers and staff in on-campus classrooms transforming children’s lives every day.

SquashBusters is an after-school program that believes in the power of sport and opportunity to change young people’s lives. About us:

We are a prophetic Franciscan Catholic community welcoming all people through prayer and outreach. St. Anthony Shrine, the “Church on Arch Street,” is a center for Roman Catholic ministries in Boston, staffed by the Franciscan friars. For over 70 years, The Shrine has provided a convenient setting for worship and social service ministries. We currently offer 21 Masses each week, plus an extensive schedule for confessions.

Tedy’s Team Member of the Official Charity Program of the 2024 Boston Marathon® presented by Bank of America.

About us:

Tedy’s Team started in 2005, after Tedy Bruschi suffered a stroke at 31.

Tedy had just won his third Super Bowl with the New England Patriots and returned home from his first Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

Tedy and his wife, Heidi, did not know the warning signs of stroke and were unaware his symptoms were stroke-related. During his recovery, Tedy and Heidi decided they wanted to use their experience to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke and to help other survivors and their loved ones.

After Tedy’s Team was created, it quickly grew into an endurance training team that helped to raise life-saving funds and awareness.

Fast forward 18 years, over 1,500 alumni, numerous travel races, Falmouth Road Races, Boston Marathons, and New York City Marathons, and Tedy’s Team has raised over $9 million to support stroke and heart disease research, education, and awareness.

Thanks to the support of its community, volunteers, runners, and sponsors, Tedy’s Team has created programs like the Comeback Assistance Program (CAP) and the Tedy’s Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

About us:

For nine-year-old Tyler, who has severe autism, everyday activities like brushing teeth, interacting with other kids, and even talking can be a challenge. Such children have needs beyond the care provided by public schools and parents. The New England Center for Children® (NECC®) helps thousands of children live their best lives by providing one-on-one special education, assistive technology, and when needed, residential care.

Our mission is two-fold: helping children with autism gain the skills they need to reach their potential and preparing special education teachers and board certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) to lead programs like ours around the world.

We provide comprehensive services (including speech and language, occupational therapy, adapted physical education, art, music, academics, aquatic safety, vocational training, and leisure skills) for children with autism ages three to 22. From our headquarters in Southborough, MA, our day school serves 75 students from local school districts as well as 104 students in our residential program.

Through our Public School Services division, our licensed teachers professionally manage 66 special education classrooms in public schools throughout MA, NH, and VT, serving an additional 870 students. This model allows students with special needs access to best practices in skill development and educational services, while in their local schools.

Our international outreach includes a school in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., serving 262 Emirati students with autism, clinics in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Qatar, and consulting services around the world. In 2006, we developed an app to deliver our curriculum online. Today, the ACE® ABA Software System is helping 13,126 students in nine countries.

How do we have such an impact? Training and research are core to our mission. From on-site graduate programs in partnership with local universities,

to supervised research projects published and presented in 21 countries, NECC’s expertise has led us to international prominence in the field.

The Rare Cancer Research Foundation About us:

Researchers have limited access to rare cancer samples, while patients struggle to find information for the treatments they need. Together with more than 300 patient advocacy and research partners, the Rare Cancer Research Foundation (RCRF) is building the ecosystem that will lead to cures for rare cancers. The RCRF’s indication-agnostic approach enables scale and efficiency across cancer communities, boosting its impact in the search for cures.

With an extinction crisis driven by human activity underway, no time has been more crucial for this work.

Instilling a love and appreciation for wildlife early on is critical to inspiring the conservation leaders of tomorrow. Each year, Zoo New England engages thousands of local school children through its nationally recognized Hatchling and Turtle Conservation through Headstarting (HATCH) program. Students raise local Blanding’s, wood, and spotted turtles throughout the school year and then release them into the wild with Zoo New England staff.

After getting a head start, the survival rate of these turtles increases exponentially.

With a wide range of education programs, as well as well-established youth programs like the summer ZooTeen program providing employment to Boston youth, Zoo New England creates opportunities that truly bring classroom learning to life.
