n New England, an enduring story of America unfolds on the fields, courts, and arenas. This year, a sports rivalry deeply rooted in history comes to the region for the first time in the game’s 124-year history. The Army-Navy Game will take place at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. on December 9.

This contest between Army and Navy is more than a game.

Whether wearing football uniforms or fatigues, the athletes who take the field are committed to their team but more than that have sworn to preserve promises made in the Constitution’s preamble.

The Boston Red Sox were established in 1901, and Fenway Park opened in 1912. During World War I and II, Fenway Park hosted a war memorial mass.

Triumph over tragedy

History has shown us how New England sports teams rally when faced with the aftermath of tragedy.

The September 11 attacks forced the NFL to postpone the 2001 season. With the country still reeling from the devastation, most Americans felt like patriots. It was that season that the 14-point underdog Patriots defeated the mighty St. Louis Rams.

Meet Aaron Provost, the Army veteran behind the cover art

He brings 22 years of experience from his military career with the United States Marine Corps, both domestic and overseas, making him a highly skilled corporate security professional.

EaglePicher is a US-owned and operated battery technology company based in Joplin, Missouri. The company excels in conducting research, designing, developing, testing, and producing specialized batteries tailored for aviation, defense, maritime, space, and commercial industries.

F

or New Hampshire native Aaron Provost, the best part of the Army-Navy Game, aside from the signs filled with expletives and quippy jabs, is the lighthearted nature of competition.

Provost, a Purple Heart recipient and veteran of the United States Army, created the illustration on the cover of this special section.

He shares that he always aims to cause a reaction or a specific feeling for people when they look at his work.

“There is an excitement that everyone joining the military feels. A sense of pride. An unexpected puff of the chest in your young sense of self.

The Army-Navy Game embodies that in many ways,” Provost says, “The [cover illustration] is celebratory. Exuberant. Filled with fun and rivalry that is heightened by inter-service competition. It’s family at the ball game rooting for different teams. This is more than a game. It’s the future.

Their future. Our future. The country’s future. All wrapped up in a little dirt, grass, and pigskin.”

Provost joined the army to “serve a bigger purpose” just before September 11. After training as a fire support specialist, he was based in Fort Hood, Texas. In 2004 he was deployed as part of the First Cavalry Division to Iraq, part of the second wave that went to Baghdad. Soon after, he was wounded by shrapnel that flew into his side when a rocketpropelled grenade hit a Humvee truck he was on during a night convoy.

After his service, Provost worked as a firefighter and an EMT before pivoting into design as a career. Illustrations have been a constant in Provost’s life since the second grade. It even served as an outlet for him while he was deployed, as he often drew during his free time.

Provost now resides in North Carolina with his wife and daughter, but the hometown connection is what drew him to this project in particular.

So what’s Provost got to say about the upcoming game? “ I just hope everyone has fun… except Navy,” the Army vet jokes.

Boston Weekend Schedule Provided By Meet Boston

The Patriot Games serve as friendly competition between the United States Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy ahead of the big game. Cadets from West Point will face off against the midshipmen from the Naval Academy to put their strength and endurance to the test. In addition to the competitions, there will be a pep rally, team mascots, cheerleaders, and pep bands.

Providing unforgettable experiences, these events take place in iconic locations, from the hallowed grounds of Minuteman National Park to the heart of Boston and the historic Charlestown Navy Yard. Patriot Games | Friday, December 8 Tug of War 8 a.m. | Minuteman National Park (near Old North Bridge), Concord, MA Often referred to as the location of the “shot heard round the world” and the Battles of Concord and Lexington, the Old North Bridge is significant because it marked one of the earliest conflicts in the American Revolutionary War. On this day, it will serve as the backdrop to a friendly battle of strength.

Leadership Reaction Course 9:30 a.m. | Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Boston Common, Boston, MA Located in downtown Boston and dedicated to the soldiers and sailors of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who died during the American Civil War, this striking monument is a tribute to their service and sacrifice.

This leadership reaction course will consist of a stanchion maze, a lobster trap throw, and a Go Army/Go Navy building competition photo op.

Parade 10:45 a.m. | Faneuil Hall, Boston, MA

Today Faneuil Hall is a lively meeting place where residents and visitors of Boston shop, dine, and gather. In 1742, it wasn’t much different. Dubbed “The Cradle of Liberty” by the nation’s founders, it was a central marketplace and public meeting hall meant for entertainment and government purposes.

Army-Navy Pep Rally and Pull-Up Competition 11:30 a.m. | Faneuil Hall, Boston, MA

Following the parade, a pep rally and pull-up competition will be held at Faneuil Hall. This spirited event will boost enthusiasm, motivation, and support for the teams ahead of the big game.

Relay Race 1:30 p.m. | Charlestown Navy Yard, Charlestown, MA This race between cadets and midshipmen will go from the Navy Yard, one of the first naval shipyards in the US, to the top of Bunker Hill, commonly known for the Battle of Bunker Hill in the early days of the American Revolutionary War, and end at the USS Constitution. There will be activities at stations throughout the relay. The team with the fastest overall time for both activities wins the fourth and final event of the day and will get the opportunity to shoot the cannon on board the USS Constitution.

Tree Lighting 4:30 p.m. | USS Constitution, Charlestown, MA

The Army and Navy will come together to get in the holiday spirit by participating in the annual tree lighting at the oldest commissioned warship still afloat. The USS Constitution was constructed in Boston in 1797. Its success during the War of 1812 made it legendary, and its well-preserved status makes it a symbol of American naval history.

Game Day | Saturday, December 9 Pre-Game Festivities 12 p.m. | Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA Those with Army-Navy Game tickets can catch the final round of the Patriot Games, a parade march and an obstacle relay inside Gillette Stadium, before the Army-Navy Game kickoff.
