Student Media Department produces campus publications About Student Media

La Ventana

The Daily Toreador

The Student Media Department, located on the first floor of the Media and Communication building Rotunda, is home to the primary sources of news at Texas Tech: The Daily Toreador newspaper (and its components the Dailytoreador.com website and mobile web for iPhone, iPad and Android devices), La Ventana yearbook and supplemental publications of Raider Life, Raiderland 101, Housing Guide and F i n a l s F r e n z y. T h e s e publications are important to life at Texas Tech.

Student learning is a primary focus of the Department of Student Media. Students are provided an opportunity to use academic knowledge gained in the classroom in the practical setting of producing a daily newspaper, a yearbook and digital media.

Many Student Media students are Media & Communication majors, but students from all disciplines have been a part of Student Media. All publications, productions and broadcasts within the

La Ventana is the only permanent recorded history of Texas Tech since its first edition in 1926. The book is 352 pages of full-color photos and stories about student organizations, athletics, student life, classes and many Texas Tech memories. A student staff of editors and reporters work most of the year to publish La Ventana. Its name is Spanish for ”the window” as it is a window into life at Texas Tech.

First printed in 1925 as The Toreador, The Daily Toreador is an official student publication designated by the Texas Tech Board of Regents to serve as a medium of mass communication for the campus community and to provide practical experience for students interested in media and communications.

As an independent publication serving the campus community, The Daily Toreador maintains professional standards and ethics reflecting the best in American journalism and advertising. The DT publishes 7,000 copies Monday through Thursday and publishes 5,000 copies twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, during the summer sessions.

THE DEPARTMENT OF Student Media, which is located in the rotunda of the Media and Communication building, is home to The Daily Toreador and La Ventana. department are considered out-of-classroom learning activities and are paid jobs.

All publications are studentrun, meaning the student editors solely are in charge of all content and personnel decisions. Student Media employs 50-75 students each semester as editors, reporters, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, print and multimedia advertising account executives and members of the delivery staff.

Student Media advisers enter student-produced work in national and state collegiate media contests.

Last year Student Media won more than 45 awards from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Associated Collegiate Press, Society of Professional Journalists and Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. Twentyfive different students won awards in the categories of opinion writing, editorial cartoon, info graphic, headline writing, in-depth reporting, sports reporting, sidebar reporting, sports action photo, feature photo, photo illustration, single spread, video package, ad design and single advertisement.

Purchase your Texas Tech yearbook During Red Raider Orientation, freshmen have the opportunity to purchase their yearbook documenting their first year on campus. Freshmen can purchase the yearbook for $65. They can also take advantage of the Four-Year plan to purchase the first three editions for only $65 and the fourth senior year edition for only $5. Either option can be paid by credit card on Touchnet Marketplace on Raiderlink during class registration. The yearbook is funded by sales.

Be “IN” the yearbook Every registered student organization has the chance to be included in the yearbook and every Tech student has the chance to have his or her picture in the book. Yearbook class section photos are taken by a professional photographer for several weeks in the fall semester. Also, throughout the fall semester students can come to the Student Media department from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to take their pictures. There is no charge for the photo.

The Newsroom Newsroom student staffers work as reporters, editors, columnists, graphic designers and photojournalists who cover a wide range of topics from city government to campus administration, features and sports. They work closely with their media advisers to improve their reporting skills by attending weekly coaching sessions.

Advertising Staff As with all newspapers and media outlets, The Daily Toreador features paid advertising. Student Media employs a student ad staff responsible for selling print and digital advertising to local businesses. They are directly responsible for the size of the newspaper each day

and are paid on commission.

by Student Media shoot photos and videos for both La Ventana yearbook and The Daily Toreador newspaper.

They also are responsible for shooting many of the portraits in the yearbook.

Dining options provide numerous choices Feed your Inner Red Raider. Hospitality Services invites students to experience award-winning dining choices and delicious food options all over campus.Dining Plans put Dining Bucks on your Tech ID that can be used to purchase anything from full meals to snacks at any of the 21 different dining locations with more than 50 dining options.

Dining Plans also give students a discount on food items purchased.

The discount varies with the dining locations and the dining plan.

Texas Tech can now order food from participating Hospitality Services locations with the Tapingo app. Download Tapingo from the app store or google play to

browse menus and order food for pickup.

Non-food items may be purchased with The Raider Cash account; for example, exam scantrons, school supplies and other sundry items available at the Sam’s Places and Sam’s Express kiosks.

The Raider Cash account is also accessed using Tech IDs; however, these funds are separate from Dining Bucks. The Raider Cash account and Dining Plans may be accessed online at www. raidercard.ttu.edu.

Included is a list of the different places to dine on campus. Hours and options are subject to change and an updated list is available at hospitality.ttu.edu.

Raider’s Choice on-campus winners announced Voting for the 21st annual Raider’s Choice took place in the Spring 2016 semester and the winners were announced in the April 28 edition of The Daily Toreador.

Raider’s Choice is organized by Texas Tech Student Media and allows Tech students and faculty to vote for their favorite things things about and around campus and the Lubbock community. Several different categories are voted on each spring, including

the best places to eat on campus.

This year, the top three choices were: First Place - The Market @ Stangel/Murdough Second Place - The Commons @ Talkington Hall Third Place - Student Union Food Court Do not forget to check out these on-campus dining options when you get to Lubbock, and make sure to vote in next year’s Raider’s Choice Awards.

Housing provides activities, information As you prepare for move-in day here are a few events to watch for. and some things to know before you arrive.

Remember to check your Texas Tech University email. This is where you will receive emails from University Student Housing and Hospitality Services.

Watch for emails from University Student Housing as it gets closer to move-in weekend for information regarding checking in at specific halls. You find information on what to bring and what not to bring at housing.ttu.edu/ movein. Before move-in weekend we suggest roommates may want to coordinate with one another on the large items.

Greek life involvement benefits students

Texas Tech is a proud host to more than 55 fraternity and sorority organizations.

Students searching for the right avenue to become involved on campus are encouraged to consider the many benefits of the community’s commitment to academics, leadership, service, and brotherhood and sisterhood. These values are not just lofty aims each organization and members strive to uphold, they are structurally engrained in the history and traditions of the organizations.

Students considering joining fraternities and sororities often hear about the process of joining, commonly referred to as recruitment or intake, and are provided information about the benefits of membership.

Student government officers look forward to new year Howdy Red Raiders, and welcome to Lubbock. My name is Ben Sharp, and I am so excited and humbled to be serving you as student body president over the course of the 2016-2017 school year.

I have served as a member of the Student Government Association since my freshman year. As a freshman, I was a member of the Freshman Council, and I served the past two years as a senator in the Student Senate, including chairing various committees. I encourage you to get involved as well.

Outside of student government, I am a senior economics major planning on attending law school. I am also involved in Beta Upsilon Chi Fraternity, Student Alumni Board and various other organizations.

Each of these roles has helped me with the most important part of my role as president, Sharp staying in touch with the student interest.

I know I, as well as my teammates, are looking forward to working for you this next year, and I truly believe that we can leave our mark on this campus if we come together and do just a little bit extra. Hey Raiderland. My name is Alex DeRossi and I am honored and excited to serve as your external vice president for the 2016 -2017 school year. I am a senior in the Rawls College of Business pursuing a degree in energy commerce with a concentration in finance and commodity trading.

My passion is serving the school I love, Texas Tech University. Whether it is serving the Greek community on the Greek Advisory Board or recruiting potential students through President’s Select, this is where my passion lies.

In addition, I serve as senior adviser to Texas Iota Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and as the vice president of finance for the Interfraternity Council. These positions have helped me into the person I am today, and I am so fortunate to continue my legacy in the Student Government Association. Myself, as well as my closest friends and teammates, are ready to go to work for you, the students.

This year in SGA will be huge. My position will

be focusing on student s a f e t y, a massive t r a n s portation overhaul, launching a new DeRossi a l u m n i mentorship program, continuing to lobby and create a sustainable partnership with Uber and breathe new life into the safe ride home program. As external vice president, my position oversees all SGA programs and auxiliary services.

This includes university operations, housing, hospitality, the Rec, sport arenas, university ID, fraternity and sorority life, student health services and the SUB. I also represent the students of Texas Tech with the Lubbock City Council.

I am excited to get this year started and I wish the very best to everyone.

I hope everyone had a fun and safe summer. My name is Witt Westbrook and I am honored to be serving you as the internal vice president of the student body during the 2016-2017 school year. I am a senior energy commerce major from Stephenville, Texas, and will be graduating in May 2017.

Throughout my time at Texas Tech I have been honored to serve in many organizations, but Student Government has always been my favorite. After all, what other organization provides you the opportunity to work alongside

students to help better our campus life? This is ultimately why I chose to run for internal vice president.

Prior to my executive position in SGA, I served three years as a senator representing the Rawls College of Business. Throughout my time as a senator I have also served on various committees including Student Life, Campus Infrastructure and the Rawls College of Business committee. I have held various leadership positions in each one of these committees and have enjoyed the relationships that I have made along the way.

Outside of SGA I am a

member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, Rawls College of Business Ambassadors and various honor societies across campus. Through these organizations I have not only been able to interact with various groups of students, but I have also had the opportunity to form relationships with administration who share the same visions for Texas Tech as I do.

I look forward to working with the very qualified exec members and senators this year to accomplish the many goals and visions that we have set out for this university. Ultimately we want to

Hello, fellow Red Raiders. My name is Kevin Koestler, and I am honored to serve you as the vice president of graduate affairs in Student Government Association. I am a graduate student in the STEM MBA program from Carrollton, Texas. I graduated from Texas Tech in December 2015 with a degree in mechanical engineering and minors in business admin-

istration and mathematics.

While I was an undergraduate, I was the president of my fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon and involved in two startup companies. I have worked on campus at the Student Recreation Center and the Office of Research Commercialization.

Spending my undergraduate and now graduate years at Texas Tech, I have become extremely passionate about this university and the stu-

dents here. Being involved on campus throughout my college years has provided me with several opportunities to meet amazing students and eventually be in this position to serve those students.

I assure you that myself and the rest of the Student Government Association will be working continuously to accomplish student-driven initiatives throughout our time in office to further

enhance the Texas Tech experience.

University Career Center informs, helps Tech students Texas Tech University Career Center views a student’s career development as a part of the student’s overall college and life experience. Its primary focus is to assist in career development and education.

The UCC provides an extensive list of online jobs and on-campus interviews through Hire Red Raiders, as well as career counseling for students to explore those factors influencing career decisions.

To maximize the career counseling appointments, staff members help students select career paths and internship endeavors through an extensive series of career assessments including the Strong Interest Inventory, StrengthsQuest, FOCUS and Personality Assessment.

Located in the Wiggins Complex (next to Chitwood/Weymouth and Coleman Residence Halls), the UCC is easily accessible to all students. Careerdevelopment information can be found on the website at www.careercenter. ttu.edu in addition to a job bank (Hire Red Raiders) that is updated daily with part-time jobs, full-time jobs and internships.

Particularly helpful to incoming students trying to decide on a major is the FOCUS assessment.

This assessment is located on the UCC website and takes about 60 minutes to complete. The assessment will direct students to actual majors at Tech. Also helpful is a feature that creates a profile of the students, which can be compared to specific professions.

In addition, the Strong Interest Inventory can be used to determine a specific career path. After taking this assessment, a student has a one-onone counseling session to review the report. Students are matched with specific careers according to their interests. There also is a section that determines t h e s t u d e n t ’s w o r k i n g style to encourage a good environmental fit in a job.

Employment/Resume Helping students prepare for and find employment is the primary function of the University Career Center.

Using the Career Development Checklist, StrengthsQuest, FOCUS and the various workshops offered, students should be prepared and ready to find internships while in school and jobs when they graduate.

Hire Red Raiders is the UCC’s database of available jobs and internships. The list is available under the student section of the UCC’s website: www.careercenter. ttu.edu.

You must create a student profile to use Hire Red Raiders. This allows you to fill out personal information, upload a resume and browse job/internship listings.

Developing a resume is essential before applying for jobs and internships, and the UCC has many different ways to create a professional, effective resume.

In addition to various resume-writing workshops during the year, the UCC uses a program at optimalresume.com, accessed from the UCC’s student web page.

This website allows students to fill out their information, which will be filtered and placed on a resume, streamlining the process and ensuring resumes do not look like the traditional Microsoft Word templates.

This program also will allow you to create an effective cover letter to grab an employer’s attention.

Examples of cover letters and resumes are available on the UCC’s website.

After completing a resume, be sure to make an appointment to have it critiqued by a career counselor.

Before you begin your job search, be sure to check out the job readiness checklist: •Google yourself •Check any social media sites for comments or pictures that could harm you.

•Order a free credit report from Equifax, Experian or Trans-Union •Check your outgoing messages on your answering machine and cellphone •Make sure your email address is professional •Be aware that many employers will require a drug test

Individual appointments University Career Center has a full staff of professional career representatives representing different majors and career paths available to Texas Tech students.

Your career representative can answer career-related questions, provide feedback and help you identify and execute your next steps in reaching your career goal.

Call the Career Center to set up an appointment with your career representative.

Assessments It can be hard to figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life, so the UCC offers four careerbased assessments that can help you make that decision. FOCUS, StrengthsQuest, Strong Interest Inventory and Personality Assessment are all available online.

The UCC also has a team of career counselors qualified to help you interpret any results and help you explore possible career options. Find more information about the assessments on our website.

Mock interviews The job interview is often one of the most nervewracking aspects of a job search, so the UCC can help you practice and perfect your interviewing skills to help you land your dream job.

These services are free or carry a small fee.

These programs exist to enrich students’ lives and ensure their mental, physical and emotional well-being.

The Center for Campus Life offers some of these programs, such as First Year Raider Experience, Transfer Connection, Greek Life, Sophomore Year and Off-Campus Initiatives, Te x a s Te c h S p i r i t a n d Traditions and Student Emergency and Crisis.

Student Counseling Center The Student Counseling Center (SCC) offers multiple services to ensure that students can successfully address their emotional and mental health needs. The SCC is located in Room 201 of the Student Wellness Center at the corner of Main Street and Flint Avenue, next to Carpenter/Wells Residence Hall.

The Student Counseling Center offers short-term individual, couples and group counseling to address a wide variety of student concerns. These concerns

may include adjusting to college, relationship loss, coping with grief, eating disorders, anxiety, depression, stress management, gender identity and sexual assault. Counseling also is available for students experiencing a recent crisis or traumatic situation.

The Student Counseling Center also promotes diversity awareness and advocacy efforts on campus. Programs such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ) Allies Training are offered, and support/therapy groups are provided to meet the needs of LGBTQ students.

The SCC’s MindSpa facility is available for students to learn various stress management techniques. The MindSpa includes a relaxation room with a massage chair and a Mind and Body room which provides interactive learning to facilitate stress management.

Educational outreach programming on mental health topics provides a proactive approach to wellness, allowing students to be in touch with their needs and create positive health care strategies.

Suicide prevention training, called QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), is a skillsbased program designed to provide hope to those in crisis. The SCC offers free QPR training for interested faculty, staff and students of the TTU community.

Participants learn how to intervene and get help for someone in a suicidal crisis.

Initiating services at the Student Counseling Center is easy. Students can walk in (no appointment necessary) for an initial screening from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Student Resolution Center College can present new challenges for students ranging from interpersonal misunderstandings to maneuvering academic or administrative processes.

Understanding rules essential to parking on campus Where to park Most parking lots on the Texas Tech campus require a permit Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Some lots require a permit 24 hours a day. Students living on and off campus may purchase permits.

Those living on campus can purchase a permit for the residence hall, or Z, parking lot near their residence hall, or in the Flint Avenue Parking Facility. Residence hall lots are reserved 24 hours a day, seven days a week for their permit holders.

Students living off campus can purchase a permit for Commuter North, Commuter ICC, the Raider Park Parking Garage, Commuter West or Commuter Satellite. These permits are valid Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. any commuter permit is valid in any commuter lot. Students also have the choice of purchasing an Evening Commuter pass, which covers parking in any commuter lot after 2:30 p.m., any park-and-pay area on campus weekdays after 5:30 p.m. and the Rec Center parking lot for the two-hour maximum.

Faculty and staff are fullor part-time non-student employees of Tech. Visitors

include those unaffiliated with Tech as students or employees. Area reserved lots and reserved individual spaces serve as employee parking and are unavailable for student purchase. Service vehicle spaces and areas allow Tech vendors and maintenance vehicles close access to buildings needing repairs or attention.

Park in your permitted location. Park only in zones your ePermit allows during permitted times. Always watch for signs in lots to identify zones and applicable times of enforcement.

Driving on campus From 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, driving through the academic core of campus — the area beyond the entry stations on the streets into campus — is open only to area reserved and reserved space permit holders, o f f i c i a l Te c h v e h i c l e s , vendors, contractors and v i s i t o r s . Te c h s t u d e n t s may not drive their personal vehicles in these areas during that time.

This decreases traffic in the most congested and pedestrian- and bicycleheavy areas of campus. The decrease provides a safer environment for students, employers and visitors as they make their way around campus.

Understanding park-and-pay areas Some areas on campus are park-and-pay lots requiring payment for parking. Rates can be paid hourly or by the day.

Students and employees with any type of valid parking permit do not have to pay to park any time

at the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center or in any campus park-andpay lot after 5:30 p.m. Some lots on campus, such as R03 (the library lot), serve as employee parking lots from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday and become park-and-pay from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Other areas may be park-and-pay during the day. Signs in park-andpay lots state the hours payment is required.

How to appeal a citation Citations must be appealed online at http:// w w w. p a r k i n g . t t u . e d u / citations/, and you must appeal within 10 days of citation issuance. Provide a detailed explanation for the appeal in the online form. Send any supporting evidence, such as photos or diagrams, to parking@ ttu.edu or 407 Flint Ave., MS 3161, Lubbock, Texas 79409-3161 by 8 p.m. the following business day.

Game-day parking Football: Many of the lots surrounding J o n e s AT & T S t a d i u m are reserved for football permit holders beginning at 6 a.m. on home game days or at 5:30 p.m. the day before the game.

Vehicles parked in these reserved areas are subject to impoundment. Those in lots affected will receive an email notification regarding specifics for their lot so long as a valid email address is provided i n t h e c u s t o m e r ’s M y Parking Account contact information.

For a fee, patrons can park in Commuter West, and a round-trip shuttle ride to and from Jones AT&T is available for a nominal fee. Free gameday parking is available in the Health Sciences Center lots near 4th Street

Getting help on campus Motorist Assistance Program: The Motorist Assistance Program, MAP, offers assistance to anyone on the Tech campus or at the Rawls Course.

Free Car Clinic: The Free Car Clinic is hosted three times per year: before Thanksgiving break, before spring break and during the summer. Tech students, f a c u l t y, s t a f f a n d visitors enjoy free food and giveaways while professional mechanics from Scott’s Complete Car Care inspect their vehicles. Mechanics check tire pressure, belts, hoses and wipers and top off fluids for free.

Bike Clinic: Hosted in the fall and spring, the Bike Clinic offers free bicycle diagnostic exams, on-site bicycle registration and visits from on- and off-campus bicycle-related organizations.

S h o r t - T e r m Assistance: This program offers more convenient parking for individuals who need short-term close parking due to an injury or medical reasons, but who may not qualify for a state-issued disability placard.

Expectant Mother Parking: This service provides closer parking t o Te c h s t u d e n t s , faculty and staff who are expectant mothers in their last trimester of pregnancy.

Permit holders may park in visitor or timelimit spaces. Expectant Mother Parking requires documentation from a physician and can be offered earlier if the pregnancy is considered high-risk.

Parent and Family Relations offers bus trips home for Thanksgiving, the Semester Break and Spring Break. Working with BreakShuttle, these trips offer students from the Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Hous-

ton and El Paso (Thanksgiving only) areas a safe way to travel home over these breaks. Registration for the bus trips begins at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.

Family Weekend, in collaboration with the Texas Tech Parents Association, is a weekend that provides an opportunity for students’ families to visit for a weekend of traditional university events.

Family Weekend 2016 will be Sept. 29-Oct. 2.

Tentative events include the Family Weekend Fun Run/Walk, Picnic in the Park and Texas Tech Parent’s Association 60th Anniversary Celebration and Texas Tech’s football game against Kansas.

Sibling Weekend is a weekend designed for students and their siblings between the ages of 8 and 15. Fun activities are planned that focus on academics, campus life and athletics. This event takes place during the spring semester.

Red Raider Orientation is a student’s first taste of life at Texas Tech, so it can be a whirlwind of activity.

The things that should be accomplished during RRO are listed below.

•Make sure all of your questions are answered.

Tech administration, faculty and staff will be available.

If you are in a group setting and have a question, do not worry about asking a “dumb” question. If you have the question, odds are someone else is wondering the same thing.

•Order textbooks. Whether from Barnes & Noble in the Student Union building, at Varsity, Double T or Red and Black, ordering textbooks before leaving is essential.

If books are ordered at orientation, students will be sure to have the books needed for fall classes.

•Go to all orientation events for parents and family members. Tech faculty and staff members have carefully planned orientation so every step is useful and essential. At each step, important questions will be answered or important aspects of having a student at Tech will be explained.

•Get a Texas Tech Tshirt. Show your support for your student by getting into the spirit.

•Go to the organization fair. This is the best way for your student to see some of the different organizations Tech has to offer. A huge variety of these organizations will be present at the fair, and the representatives will be able to explain what the organization is, answer any questions about it or give a student’s perspective into

life at Tech.

•Order the 2016 La Ventana yearbook. The easiest place to get the yearbook is at orientation.

Yearbook representatives will be on hand to answer any questions you and your student may have.

All four books for your student’s entire college career can be ordered at a discounted price, eliminating the hassle of reordering every year. Also, yearbooks may be purchased online through Raiderlink or by calling 806-742-3388.

•Get to know the campus. Tech has one of the largest campuses in the country, which becomes apparent when you attempt to find specific locations.

Although it will take a while for your student to figure out where everything is, taking time to walk the campus during orientation will help.

Be sure to locate your student’s residence hall, the Student Union building and Memorial Circle.

These three places will help your student figure out the basics of Tech’s campus. Other important buildings are the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center, the Student Wellness Center, and the library.

•Pick up a copy of The Daily Toreador. The summer version of The DT comes out twice a week, but during the regular school year, it comes out Monday through Thursday.

The DT also can be read every day at its website, www.dailytoreador.com.

The DT is one of the best college newspapers in the

country and will be your student’s primary source of on-campus and local news.

•Register for the Parent and Family eNews at www.parent.ttu.edu.

Be sure to register, as this will be your primary source of information about what happens at Tech and is the best way to take an active role in your student’s college career.

•Set up a payment plan for a class ring. The Texas Tech Alumni Association coordinates the ordering of class rings.

While your student is just starting out, signing up for a savings plan is a great way to get the ball rolling so the ring will not be as expensive when the time comes.

The plan charges a $50 nonrefundable fee every semester, so $300 is saved up by the time your student has enough hours to order his or her ring.

The alumni association gives students the necessary information and assists them in ordering the ring when the time is right.

Traditional Campus-Wide Events Arbor Day

Arbor Day is a campus beautification program pioneered by President Bradford in 1938. It provides the opportunity for students, faculty and staff to join together to beautify the Tech campus, to build a sense of community and to receive recognition.

Diversity Week

A week dedicated to celebrating and understanding the importance of diversity throughout the community and Texas Tech University. Join TAB, along with student organizations and departments across campus, to celebrate diversity all week long.

Homecoming

The Homecoming committee plans events for Te x a s Te c h H o m e c o m ing Week each fall. Traditional events include S.O. Sing, parade and the crowning of the Homecoming Court.

RaiderGate: A Student Tailgate Tradition

TAB hosts a student tailgate experience before home football games. Each year nearly 10,000 Texas Tech students attend one of the largest pre-game events on campus.

Passes are free but must be reserved online at www.raidergate.ttu.edu.

College can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. RaiderReady: IS 1100 is a course designed to bridge the gap between high school and collegiate success.

Students who enroll in

this one-hour class can expect to learn and further develop note, studying, and test-taking skills, academic professionalism, as well as stress management.

RaiderReady is an invalu-

able resource not only for the quality of skills our students learn, but also the relationships built while doing so.

The class allows students a place to navigate freshman year and gives them a faculty

member to help creates success. It is evident this class helps with transitioning to college in higher numbers of students returning for a second year in comparison to the university average.

DOG DAYS

Tech-or-Treat

Tech-or-Treat is a Halloween carnival that provides a safe alternative to trick or treating, and is staffed by Texas Tech student organizations, sororities, fraternities and campus departments.

Thursday Night Movies

Each Thursday when classes are in session, a movie is shown in the SUB Escondido Theatre at 10 PM. Admission is free and Hospitality Services provides a free popcorn and fountain drink for attendees. See current movie schedule at www. sub.ttu.edu.

Rec Center provides activities for students

As a new student at Texas Tech, you are already a member of the Student Recreation Center.

The programs and facility at the Rec Center offer free admission to all undergraduate students.

Just swipe your Raider ID and come on in. Activities include: -Organized team sport competitions, open to all students -More than 80 open participation fitness classes every week -Basketball, racquetball, squash, volleyball and indoor soccer courts -100 + treadmills, stairmasters, resistance machines and free weights including the Raider Performance Room, home of CrossFit Texas Tech -1/9 mile indoor running track and cardio area -Check out basketballs, volleyballs, weight belts, goggles and anything you might need for the sport of your choice -Special events like fitness runs, climbing competitions, and triathlons Weekday building hours are from 6 a.m. to midnight.

Want to earn some money?

The Rec Center employees more than 400 student workers a year in a wide variety of capacities.

Employees include desk staff, building workers, lifeguards, summer camp counselors, officials and even a photographer or two.

Recreational Sports has a new Field Turf Complex that hosts intramural flag football, sport clubs and is open for student use throughout the semester.

Enjoy Urbanovsky Park with more sand volleyball courts and outdoor basketball courts, a new running track, pond and space to play.

Aquatic facilities The Student Leisure Pool is always a great place to find students gathering, floating and chatting during the summer months, but did you know that yearround pool access with fully indoor facility is offered? If the water is your thing, you’re covered all year round.

-The Leisure Pool features a 645 foot lazy river and 20-person hot tub -Both facilities have aquatic volleyball and basketball hoops -Special events include polar bear swim, moonlight floats, and a wide variety of Red Cross certification courses.

Intramural program Do you enjoy team sports, tournaments and leagues? The intramurals department provides competition opportunities to our students. Most intra-

murals are free to play and all registered students are eligible to participate.

Play flag football, softball and basketball with your friends. These programs have hundreds of participating teams each semester.

You play sand volleyball and outdoor soccer during the warm fall months and indoor volleyball and soccer during the winter months.

One-day tournaments include dodgeball, golf, ultimate Frisbee, knockersoccer, spikeball and battleship.

Outdoor Pursuits Center Feel the call of the great wild yonder? If you like to canoe, mountain bike, backpack, kayak or go camping, the Outdoor Pursuits Center is here to make your adventure a reality.

-Rent equipment like tents, sleeping bags, skis, bikes and more -Climb the new indoor Rock Wall. Our staff is there most afternoons to get you on rope and up the wall.

-Join us on a day trip to go hiking or backpacking - Ta k e a w e e k e n d o r week-long adventure with other students to rock climb, canyoneer, mountain bike or even go ice climbing.

Sports clubs If you are interested in joining a sports club and competing across the Southwest region against other schools, the Rec Center hosts a wide variety of choices. All student organizations accept all applications, so do not hesitate to sign up.

-More than 30 unique clubs -If your specific sport interest does not exist, form your own club.

-Clubs include lacrosse, martial arts, cricket, wakeboarding, paintball, quidditch and new sport clubs like trap and skeet.

Fitness and wellness Do you like yoga, pilates or dance? Can you Zumba with the best (or worst) of ‘em or do you just like to be a part of a group effort to stay in shape and have some fun?

The Fitness and Wellness group at the Rec Center puts on hundreds of courses every semester, most of which require no sign-ups and are free to attend.

-Hip Hop, Zumba and cardio dance classes every weekday -Free daily yoga, pilates and spin classes -Tabata, interval, core and conditioning courses -Available specialty courses, like crossfit, better bodies boot camp and dance classes.
