Nelson Mandela, 20th century colossus, dies at 95 JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Nelson Mandela, who became one of the world’s most beloved statesmen and a colossus of the 20th century when he emerged from 27 years in prison to negotiate an end to white minority rule in South Africa, has died. He was 95.

South African President Jacob Zuma made the announcement at a news conference late Thursday, saying “we’ve lost our greatest son.”

His death closed the final chapter in South Africa’s struggle to cast off apartheid, leaving the world with indelible memories of a man of astonishing grace and good humor.

Rock concerts celebrated his birthday. Hollywood stars glorified him on screen. And his regal bearing, graying hair and raspy voice made him instantly recognizable across the globe.

As South Africa’s first black president, the ex-boxer, lawyer and prisoner No. 46664 paved the way to racial reconciliation with wellchosen gestures of forgiveness. He

lunched with the prosecutor who sent him to jail, sang the apartheidera Afrikaans anthem at his inauguration, and traveled hundreds of miles to have tea with the widow of Hendrik Verwoerd, the prime minister at the time he was imprisoned.

His most memorable gesture came when he strode onto the field before the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in Johannesburg. When he came on the field in South African colors to congratulate the victorious South African team, he brought the overwhelmingly white crowd of 63,000 to its feet, chanting “Nelson!

Nelson! Nelson!”

For he had marched headlong into a bastion of white Afrikanerdom — the temple of South African rugby — and made its followers feel they belonged in the new South Africa.

At the same time, Mandela was himself uneasy with the idea of being an icon and he did not escape criticism as an individual and a politician, though much of it was

muted by his status as a unassailable symbol of decency and principle. As president, he failed to craft a lasting formula for overcoming South Africa’s biggest post-apartheid problems, including one of the world’s widest gaps between rich and poor. In his writings, he pondered the heavy cost to his family of his decision to devote himself to the struggle against apartheid.

He had been convicted of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 for leading a campaign of sabotage against the government, and sent to the notorious Robben Island prison. It was forbidden to quote him or publish his photo, yet he and other jailed members of his banned African National Congress were able to smuggle out messages of guidance to the anti-apartheid crusade.

As time passed — the “long, lonely, wasted years,” as he termed them — international awareness of apartheid grew more acute. By the time Mandela turned 70 he was

the world’s most famous political prisoner. Such were his mental reserves, though, that he turned down conditional offers of freedom from his apartheid jailers and even found a way to benefit from confinement.

“People tend to measure themselves by external accomplishments, but jail allows a person to focus on internal ones; such as honesty, sincerity, simplicity, humility, generosity and an absence of variety,” Mandela says in one of the many quotations displayed at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. “You learn to look into yourself.”

Thousands died, were tortured and were imprisoned in the decadeslong struggle against apartheid, so that when Mandela emerged from prison in 1990, smiling and waving to the crowds, the image became an international icon of freedom to rival the fall of the Berlin Wall.

South Africa’s white rulers had portrayed Mandela as the spearhead of a communist revolution and insisted that black majority rule would

usher in the chaos and bloodshed that had beset many other African countries as they shook off colonial rule.

Yet since apartheid ended, South Africa has held four parliamentary elections and elected three presidents, always peacefully, setting an example on a continent where democracy is still new and fragile.

Its democracy has flaws, and the African National Congress has struggled to deliver on promises.

It is a front runner ahead of 2014 elections, but corruption scandals and other missteps have undercut some of the promise of earlier years.

“We have confounded the prophets of doom and achieved a bloodless revolution. We have restored the dignity of every South African,” Mandela said shortly before stepping down as president in 1999 at age 80.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born July 18, 1918, the son of a tribal chief in Transkei, one of the future “Bantustans,” independent

republics set up by the apartheid regime to cement the separation of whites and blacks.

Mandela’s royal upbringing gave him a dignified bearing that became his hallmark. Many South Africans of all races would later call him by his clan name, Madiba, as a token of affection and respect.

Growing up at a time when virtually all of Africa was under European colonial rule, Mandela attended Methodist schools before being admitted to the black University of Fort Hare in 1938. He was expelled two years later for his role in a student strike.

He moved to Johannesburg and worked as a policeman at a gold mine, boxed as an amateur heavyweight and studied law.

His first wife, nurse Evelyn Mase, bore him four children. A daughter died in infancy, a son was killed in a car crash in 1970 and another son died of AIDS in 2005. The couple divorced in 1957 and Evelyn died in 2004.

Timothy Mendoza, a junior accounting major from Hamlin, said he has never used energy drinks or Adderall to help him study because he didn’t need the extra help.

Adderall has worked for some of his friends, Mendoza said.

He said he has been offered the drug, but has never tried it.

Comiskey said he doesn’t want to endorse taking Adderall, but the drug does help some students achieve better grades because they can function at a higher level.

However, he said the risk is not worth the reward.

“If they continue to rely on this, it can have some really negative side effects that can turn into life-altering situations for them,” he said.

The worst stimulants are drugs prescribed to somebody else like Adderall, Comiskey said.

Energy drinks are not as dangerous unless a student is drinking four or five in one night.

Comiskey said his advice is to get enough rest so students’ brains can function during the final.

“Trust that you’ve done the best you can do at this point,” he said.

Nellis became the University’s 16th president on March 22, according to the Tech website. He began his term in July.

He and his wife Ruthie arrived at Tech after five years at the University of Idaho where Nellis served as president, according to the website.

Nellis received his bachelor’s degree in earth sciences/geography at Montana State University, according to the website.

Learning communities benefit students

With finals approaching, Texas Tech Learning Communities on campus provide students opportunities to study, make connections, and interact with peers within the same major.

Learning communities provide a place for students to live, learn, and hang out together. There are currently 15 learning communities in the different residence halls, according to the Tech Student Housing website. More than 2,300 students live in the communities, which is about one-third of the stu-

dents living in the residence halls.

“It helped me a lot with learning how to do projects and how to study for our tests,” Emily Jones, a junior interior design major from Amarillo, said.

Jones lived in the Architecture and Design Learning Community her freshman year, she said.

Learning communities, according to the Tech Student Housing website, help students experience events designed specifically for a student’s personal and academic needs.

“They would hold events in the study lounge,” Jodie May, a junior journalism major from Sweetwater,

said. May lived in the pre-medicine learning community in Stangel her freshman year.

“We could all get together and study for the big tests coming up,” she said, “and they held hall meetings that kept us in touch with each other.”

Jones said she thinks the communities were beneficial because they are great for collaboration.

The older students in the learning community, she said, help because they have the same interests and studies.

It boosts students’ chances for academic success, according to the Tech Student Housing website.

Need a holiday present?

Texas agency sells maps DALLAS (AP) — Buy a map.

Preserve a piece of Texas history.

It may not have the same catchy ring as “Don’t Mess With Texas,” but it speaks to Dallas lawyer Jeff Dunn, who has amassed a sizable collection of replica maps sold by the Texas General Land Office.

The Dallas Morning News reports the little-known state agency has been selling replicas of antique maps since 2004, with proceeds helping to preserve some of its 35 million original documents.

Dunn, former president of the Texas Maps Society, shies away from revealing how many maps he’s purchased for himself. “You’ll think I’m crazy,” he said.

But there are several reasons for acquiring them, he said.

“Many of my friends and colleagues are interested in art and history and geography,” said Dunn.

The maps “are a convergence of all three of those,” he said.

The land office has sold more than 31,000 replicas, raising more

than $650,000 for preservation, said James Harkins, director of public services for the land office’s archives and records department.

He said those funds are badly needed because no taxpayer dollars are available for the preservation efforts. Original maps cost about $4,000 each to preserve.

The maps are popular with historians, genealogists, land surveyors, lawyers and oil and gas workers, Harkins said.

“People buy them for all different reasons,” he said. “They’re all good reasons to me.”

Most of the replicas cost between $20 and $40.

Trevia Wooster Beverly, a Houston genealogist, owns about three dozen.

“I buy everyone I have any kind of interest in,” she said.

Like Dunn, she finds the maps rich in Texas’ storied history.

“If my husband was rich enough, I’d probably have all of them,” Beverly said.

The agency’s earliest map dates to 1720.

“It shows Texas as part of Florida, as part of the French claim to the New World,” Harkins said. “I don’t think the word ‘Texas’ is mentioned.”

A perennial best-seller is an 1849 map of Texas done by Jacob De Cordova, the first map the land office preserved, Harkins said.

“It’s probably one of the most beautiful maps of Texas that there is,” he said.

One of the reasons for its popularity, Harkins said, is that it shows Texas at its farthest boundary, going up to what is now New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.

The replica maps are available at every level — city, county and state.

Another popular seller is “bird’s-eye view” maps, which show cities in a particular year.

Those maps were usually were commissioned in the late 1800s by various chambers of commerce, Harkins said.

It also helps to provide an easier transition from high school to college, increases class attendance and provides an opportunity for greater involvement on campus and in professional organizations.

“We have events,” Tyesha Looper, a sophomore electrical engineering major from Honolulu, said, “such as building balloon towers, having movie nights, and at the beginning of the year everyone comes together and introduces themselves.”

Looper lives in the Women in Science and Engineering Learning Community, she said. She has lived there for two years now, Looper

said, and it helps her to stay focused on her studies.

“Living in a learning community makes me focus more on classes and I am able to find someone who can help me with the classes that I am taking,” she said.

There are multiple benefits to learning communities, such as building social and intellectual connections with peers, creates a supportive learning environment and increases rates of retention in college, according to the National Center for Postsecondary Research.

“It definitely helped me adjust to college better than I would have without it,” May said.

Jones still lives with same roommate from her learning community and the girl she met in her learning community that lived across the hall, she said.

“We often did homework in the study lounge together,” Jones said.

“Our (community adviser) was always there to answer questions.”

Even if a student does not live in a learning community, the residence halls offer tutoring for all students in core curriculum classes such as English 1301 and 1302, chemistry, math and biology, according to the Tech Student Housing website. ➤➤jpeña@dailytoreador.com

The library will remain open 24 hours a day through the end of finals, according to the announcement.

Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lights up NEW YORK (AP) — With a flick of the switch, a 76-foot Norway Spruce officially became the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree after it was illuminated for the first time this holiday season in a ceremony that’s been held since 1933.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg turned on the lights just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, setting off a dazzling 45,000 multi-colored LED lights and a 9 ½-foot-wide Swarovski star that topped the 12-ton tree.

Adam Connery, 41, and his wife Kristy Connery, 37, from Tyngsborough, Mass., watched the ceremony on their first vacation to New York City.

“It’s gorgeous, it’s enormous,” said Kristy Connery of the massive tree towering above the hundreds of thousands of people who gathered to watch the ceremony. “Christmas

is my favorite time of the year.”

The holiday event in midtown Manhattan also was watched by millions on television. The tree will be on display until Jan. 7, after which it’ll be milled into lumber for Habitat for Humanity.

Artists such as Mary J. Blige, the Goo Goo Dolls, Jewel, Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis performed.

Lamar Lakins, 37, a housekeeper from Queens, brought his wife, mother, 10-year-old daughter Shanel, and newborn son to watch the performances and see the tree lighting.

He and Shanel danced together in the plaza during a performance of “Jingle Bells.”

“I just love this,” he said of the gathering. “It’s just people out enjoying themselves. I’m definitely a fan of the holiday season.”

tree made the 70-mile trip to New York City on a tractor-trailer from its home in Shelton, Conn., last month.

Danbury, Conn., resident Mary Hynes, 60, declared the show to be “outstanding.”

“The excitement of the crowd, the brilliance of the lights. It was great,” she said.

“Today Show” personalities Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie and Natalie Morales cohosted “Christmas in Rockefeller Center,” which aired on NBC. They dedicated the broadcast to James Lovell, 58, a married father of four and a sound and lighting expert who worked on the tree. Lovell was one of four people killed when a Metro-North commuter train derailed in the Bronx on Sunday.

He was on his way to work on the tree when the accident occurred.

around their home, so when break time approaches it’s all available. When it’s easier to take a break, you ultimately complete studying faster as you can more quickly finish the break and resume studying.

Keep in mind, when I say it’s more easily accomplished, it’s not to say that I’m unaware someone could take a snack to the library or rest their head there for a few minutes. However it will be more comfortable at home and you won’t bother anyone. That is the big one.

S o m e people have no idea that their snoring sounds like a dump truck driving over a minefield until they fall asleep in a public place such as the l i b r a r y d u ring finals.

Noises such as wrappers being ripped off packages, computers and phones making sounds, people discussing projects and coughing and sneezing on rapid fire can be extremely distracting.

It’s a two-way street, and the way to avoid being on either side is to avoid the whole scene. In my experience, the library during finals is louder and more distracting than just about anywhere.

For some, the reasons behind studying at the library have to do with procrastination. This concept applies to me too.

Sometimes you will find anything you possibly can do other than schoolwork, and maybe this can be easier at home. You can tell yourself you need to clean, or you need to watch “The Walking Dead” mara-

thon, or there’s something you absolutely have to do right now online — like beat that level of Candy Crush Saga — or you have to call a friend right then.

There are many excuses one could make, but in the end it comes down to a person’s own self-discipline and the standards they hold themselves to. There’s a good chance if you were going to procrastinate at home, you will not be as productive at the library either. Realistically it’s just as easy to get off topic.

You can do and watch the same things online at the library as you can at home.

You can meet someone and engage in conversation at the library just as easily as you could call someone up at home — and believe me, people watching and listening can be just as distracting and interesting as television. I guess the one distraction I mentioned and didn’t address would be cleaning — and if you wish to clean the library, all the power to you, but for everyone else, I’ll give you that one.

So what is the appeal? If meeting with a group to work on something, it is easier to choose a more neutral location such as the library to work. Otherwise, I think libraries have a history of and are associated with being quiet, productive places to work. However, don’t judge a book — or a whole library — by its cover.

Experience things and take them for what they are. I find the library very busy and distracting around finals time despite ideas concerning what libraries should be like, or what other people think. Decide for yourself what works best, and stick with it.

e’ve reached that point in the semester when everyone goes to social media to let everyone else know just how stressed they are about studying for finals.

Regardless of an individual’s study habits – whether it be to load themselves up with caffeine and hang out with their friends in the library or lock themselves in their room until test time – final exams produce a stressful couple of days for us all.

One unique aspect about fall semester finals is that they always land in December, just in time for it to get unbearably cold and sometimes snowy here at Texas Tech. The icy weather and freezing winds may tempt some to stay at home and nestle up in their beds, convincing themselves that they can get just as much studying done in the warmth of their home as they could on campus or elsewhere.

This, however, would be a mistake. Studying at home provides far too many potential distractions and temptations to efficiently study for a final exam.

One of the downsides to studying at home is that it forces you to have a false image of just how much study time you actually have before your exam. When you’re studying at home you have a bigger chunk of time available to study.

“But wait,” you may think, “isn’t more time studying a good thing?” Although I’m not endorsing the practice of cramming for an exam, having more time to study for an exam actually lulls you into having a false sense of security. More often than not you’ll find yourself looking at the clock an hour before test time and realize that you’ve actually spent more time procrastinating than actually

getting any studying done.

Another problem with studying at home is the environment you’re surrounded by. Roommates can be distracting and tempt you to play another game of FIFA instead of studying, and the next thing you know it’s 3 a.m. and your test is in 5 hours.

Similar to the temptations roommates sometimes provide are the other comfortable amenities that exist in your home.

When we’re at home we tend to dress comfortably, sometimes going so far as just wearing pajamas, and this could lead to disastrous results. While it is important to be comfortable while studying, being too comfortable can lead to impromptu naps that, unfortunately, can last a little longer than we planned on.

The last problem with studying at home rather than in a public place is the existence of a multitude of opportunities for procrastination. We convince ourselves that we’ll clean just our room or watch just one episode of The Walking Dead, and then we’ll immediately get back to studying.

Hours later your entire home is cleaner than a decontamination lab, you’re halfway through the director’s cut of Lord of the Rings and you’ve not gotten any studying done.

Studying in public places provides a better atmosphere for you to use your time efficiently by getting the most out of your studying. This can include studying at the campus library, other places around campus or at your choice of coffee shop.

One benefit to studying at the library during finals time is that you have an almost infinite

amount of resources available.

There are computers, scholarly journals and books, as well as food, all within walking distance.

You can also use the spaces provided for meeting with other classmates to study in a group, which is one of the best ways to assure everyone understands the material.

Another positive aspect about studying at the library is that it can be encouraging to be surrounded by your fellow co-eds. Seeing everyone else panicking and stressing about their finals can make you feel comfortable in knowing you’re not alone in your endeavor.

Knowing everyone around you is studying can also keep you from browsing Reddit for hours on end or accidentally falling asleep on the couch.

Being out in public helps us to better manage our time and use it more wisely when it comes to the intense amount of studying required during finals. For those people who study better in quiet, secluded areas, the library offers a number of places for you to set up camp and get your studying knocked out.

On the flip side, for those of us who study better with ambient noises of chatter or the like, the library also has areas designated for this and most coffee shops around campus provide tables and wireless internet as well.

We each have our own unique way of effectively studying, but for those of you who may be unsure about which type of atmosphere best suits you, give the library or another public place a shot if you haven’t before. You may be surprised at how much you can get done.

n my observation, it seems as though most people prefer to study in places such as the library. In some ways this makes a lot of sense; libraries are perceived as quieter with less room for procrastination. Call me strange, but I prefer to study in the comforts of my humble abode.

It can be easy to forget things when one studies elsewhere.

I often find myself halfway through studying thinking I wish I had not forgotten the textbook, or how I wish I had a pair of headphones with me to watch a video concerning my studies, or even having something as simple as a water bottle.

This may be a psychological issue pertaining to me personally, but I do know one thing: Every time I take my studies from home, I forget something or find myself wanting something I don’t have. If it happens to me, I bet I’m not alone. I study best when all my resources are at my disposal to aid my attempt to succeed, and I am able to get more accomplished faster when I’m at home where everything is easily accessible.

It’s even easier to take breaks when you study at home. I know some people would rather go straight through without breaks, however if you’re the type that works better stopping to eat or rest when you get too hungry or tired, this is more easily accomplished at home.

Since the appearance of operant conditioning in psychological fields, scholars have argued that positive reinforcement is a more effective tool in shaping human and animal behavior than is punishment — whether it is at home, school or the workplace.

This is not to say that punishment has no place in behavior conditioning.

Without punishment, children may grow to think that poor actions or mistakes have no negative consequences, which can be just as dangerous as be-

ing punished too frequently or fearing consequence at every turn. However, as in most things in life, it must be used in moderation. Looking at the case of any abused or neglected child can show you the dangers of over-punishment.

Despite this, school districts around the country continue to use harsh zero-tolerance policies for student misbehavior. This accompanies the idea that hard conditioning will eradicate the bad behavior of a child, like a dog swatted for peeing on the carpet. However, these methods rarely work, and reports of zero-tolerance policy failures are growing each year. The New York Times reports that these “get-tough” policies are resulting in increased arrests and drop-outs, rather than the other way around.

Perhaps some may see it as “punishment” for a student to be suspended for a week or two. However, without making sweeping generalities it can safely be said that children who are suspended are not often the type to be fussed over a for few missed classes.

What results is then not punishment at all, but a delaying of educational process.

As a result of those precious missed weeks, a student who misbehaved or broke the law will fall behind in their classwork. Any motivation they had to do well in class will evaporate when it becomes difficult just to catch up with the rest of the class.

That effect is only increased if a student is kicked out of a school. Without being tied to that institution, it is up to potentially lax parents or oblivious authorities to make that student restart their education at a different school.

Of course, schools want to flush their systems of bad students and social deviants, but schools are not meant to be pinnacles of societal balance and peace — they are institutions of education.

Many argue that it is the parents’, not the schools’, duty to morally educate a child but in a situation where parents are unwilling or unable, whose job is it?

Under the Obama administration, the Departments of Justice and Education respectively have worked to keep children in schools, and discourage schools from expelling students who commit minor mistakes. With federal attention, perhaps the problem will eventually be assuaged, but it isn’t something the public can ignore in the meantime.

Young people who commit one tiny error — going to the wrong party, making a bad split-decision, making the wrong friends in a new district — can have their futures taken away from them. By suspending or expelling students, schools can indirectly cause students to lose their diploma by making it hard for that student to continue their education, or hard to even want to do so.

out of sports, dances or other school functions may seem like a good punishment for poor behavior, but these actions isolate children and sometimes, encourage them to turn to other, less beneficial forms of recreation. With the options of school sports, clubs, dances or other after-school groups, it is easier for a child to fall into less legal or socially accepted habits.

Think back to the mistakes we made in high school, or our friends made, or even other classmates that we didn’t know too well. Is it fair for those kids to have their future taken away from them? If you or your friends were caught and punished for every bad thing you did, would you still be where you are today?

It’s time to rethink the zero-tolerance policies, and give our children a second chance.

How to survive Finals Week

It seems we have stumbled upon that time of year where we all keep repeating, “Where did the semester go?” and “I can’t believe it’s December!”

Well believe it, my friends. It’s hashtag finals week, which means it’s time to stop watching Netflix and start calculating exactly how well you have to do on your exam if it’s worth 20 percent of your grade.

I consider myself a pretty intelligent human, although some may disagree, and as a senior at Texas Tech, I’ve grown fairly accustomed to this dreaded week. Over the years I’ve acquired a few nuggets of knowledge that have helped me maintain a solid GPA and survive finals week without tossing back some of Katniss and Peeta’s berries.

I’ve learned that the library is a pretty good place to go if you don’t want to get any studying done. OK, that’s not entirely true, but be honest with yourself when you pick a study location.

The library gets insanely packed during finals week, and chances

Callie Poindexter are, you’re going to see someone you know walk by at least once an hour. If you’re easily distracted, you may want to pick a different place or get a cubicle in the stacks.

I usually study in coffee shops, mostly due to my caffeine addiction. They can also be littered with friends, so be careful. There’s nothing wrong with studying at home if that works for you, and contrary to popular belief, you can retain information without posting a picture of your books and a coffee mug on Instagram.

Studying in large groups usually never really works out either, especially if it’s a group of friends.

Trust me, you can find a way to relate any topic to the party you

went to last week.

Music always helps me study, mostly just to block out other noises so I can concentrate. But I can’t listen to music with words. I recommend Explosions in the Sky radio on Pandora.

I would say don’t cram, but we all do it. It’s unrealistic, however, to think that you’ll be able to concentrate on one thing for hours without a break. That’s just not how our minds work. Study for an hour, take a break, stand up, walk around, get a drink of water, eat an apple, and study for another hour.

Simple.

But if you really want to get some studying done, get off of Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Netflix, etc. No, like actually get off of them. Turn your phone or Wi-Fi off if you have to. It will be the difference between seven cups of coffee and actually getting to sleep before your final. I promise you’ll survive without social media for a few hours.

I’m pretty sure Lubbock’s weath-

er patterns get even more Bipolar during fall semester finals week, if that’s even possible. This year the forecast shows we are in for some pretty cold weather that starts the same time as finals, conveniently.

Don’t count on Tech to cancel or postpone exams however, even though they postponed class earlier in the semester. It will take some serious freezing precipitation to get you out of that final. Yes, we all like to play in the snow, but focus.

Lastly, take some time on an off day between finals to have a margarita at Chimy’s. I mean, if you’re 21 and up, of course. If not, you can substitute the margarita for a pizookie at BJ’s or something.

Anyway, treat yourself. Everyone needs to de-stress, and as much as I hate to say it, day drinking on a weekday won’t be acceptable after we get real jobs.

Good luck, happy studying and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Tech gurus help boost speedy Internet in schools ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Needed to keep a school building running these days: Water, electricity — and broadband.

Interactive digital learning on laptops and tablets is replacing traditional textbooks in many cases.

Students are taking computer-based tests instead of fill-in-the bubble exams. Teachers are accessing far-off resources for lessons.

Technology is changing the way students are taught — and tested. But there’s a catch: Most of it is occurring in schools that have rich connectivity to the Internet.

Although nearly every school has Internet access, classrooms frequently are not connected or the connections are super slow.

The hurdle is limited capacity inside schools to transmit data, or bandwidth.

“It’s the backbone. We have to actually think not just about the sustainability of the current traffic, we’re talking about exploding traffic,”

said Raj Adusumilli, assistant superintendent for information services in the Arlington Public Schools in northern Virginia.

The effort to get high-speed Internet access in every school got a boost Wednesday from the philanthropy of two technology gurus — Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates.

Zuckerberg’s Startup: Education and Gates’ foundation have contributed a combined $9 million to the nonprofit EducationSuperHighway, a San Francisco-based nonprofit working to improve connectivity in schools.

“When schools and teachers have access to reliable Internet connections, students can discover new skills and ideas beyond the classroom,” Zuckerberg said in a statement.

The funds are expected to be used to provide technical expertise to schools and use competition to help drive costs down.

It likely would cost billions to get high-speed Internet access to every

school in America.

President Barack Obama this past summer set a goal of having 99 percent of students connected to high-speed Internet connections within five years. Also, the Federal Communications Commission is weighing changes to a program to increase connectivity in schools.

Today, about 80 percent of schools have Internet capabilities that are too slow or isolated to places like front offices and computer labs, said Richard Culatta, director of education technology at the Education Department.

Many schools have the same amount of connectivity as an average home.

That means several hundred kids or more operate on an Internet connection similar to that used in a house by four family members. That leads to networks that are slow and prone to crashing.

“There are many examples of fantastic things happening across the country, but they are happening in places where infrastructure is in

place that supports these types of innovations,” Culatta said.

At Jamestown Elementary School in Arlington, Va., first and second graders use iPads to document the growth of caterpillars for a science project or record themselves reading out loud as they make electronic books.

“It’s fun. You can draw and make books and movies,” said 7-year-old Braeden Meeker. “We learn writing and math. We learn a lot of things.”

But one day in class, the system crashed when students tried to look up their house on a Google map.

The district has upgraded to high-speed broadband, or Internet access that is always available and faster than dialup, in middle and high schools and is in the process of doing the same in elementary schools. The district’s goal is to assign a device to each student by 2017.

Professor overcomes end of year stresses

As finals week approaches, the word ‘stressed’ is becoming more popular and more widely used among the student body.

However, it is not just students that face a hectic schedule as the semester draws to an end, and for instructor and academic advisor Ryan Johnson, the endof-semester chaos is just the tip of the stressful iceberg.

Johnson, originally from Anderson, Ind., on top of grading essays, advising media and communications students and filling out paperwork, also has to deal with the large task that is having both a newborn son and 16-month-old son.

Having two young boys to take care of definitely raises his stress level, he said.

However, Johnson said, the downside is mainly just being exhausted all the time.

“It’s work and then I go home and then help take care of them and then in the middle of the night get up for feedings and what not,” Johnson said. “There are those mornings where you’re like ‘well, if I go back to sleep now, I’ll have an additional 30 minutes of sleep, but then I’ll be even more tired waking up.’”

For instance, he said, he knows the other day his wife only got about 2 hours of sleep for the entire day.

Coffee is definitely breakfast, lunch and dinner though, Johnson said.

“It’s mainly just a lack of sleep,” Johnson said.

To prepare before his son Rowan’s birth, which was only one month ago, Johnson said there were some contingencies in place.

“The first week I told everyone I was going to be gone,” he said. “The second week I said I was going to take half days, that way students don’t get caught and it’s my fault that they couldn’t register.

“What actually ended up happening, though, was that even on the days I was completely off, if it was a registration day, I came in anyway, because I knew the system would go down and the students would freak out and contact me anyways. Being here was easier in the long run.”

If a stressed student were to come to him, Johnson said, the first thing he would tell them is to breathe.

“The second thing I say is realize time passes,” he said. “I know that sounds kind of dumb, but I’ve been in a stage where I’ve had three major papers due and projects due and rehearsals and a whole bunch of other stuff, all within the same three days.”

For those three days, Johnson said, maybe a student won’t sleep.

At the end of it though, he said, a student can get this euphoric high and it feels like the weight of the world is off his shoulders.

“You just have to realize that yeah, this is going to be horrible

for a certain amount of time, but you will get through it,” Johnson said. “You learn from everything.”

He said to manage his stress he listens to music, reads, studies, does research and talks with people in his office. At home, he will watch TV and eventually try to sleep.

To deal with the stress of work and young children, he said, the couple has learned to just deal with things, as well as make time to see their friends.

“The idea’s not to overcome stress, necessarily,” Cody Heath, a marriage and family therapist first year doctorate student from Cotton Center, said. “What we would like to do is to think to yourself ‘How do I manage or deal with this,’ because it’s going to happen.”

P eople are goin g to feel stressed one way or another at some point in their lives or a lot of the time in their lives, he said.

The idea is to handle it, to deal with it, Heath said.

“If we’re scared of it or if we don’t like it and we try to fight it, it’s just going to make it worse,” he said.

To manage stress, a student can take a breath, take a step back, realize what’s causing the stress and do their homework, Heath said.

Or, he said, exercising, eating correctly, doing yoga, hanging out with people that care about them and being around animals – if a person enjoys animals – can all reduce stress.

“Those things can be done to deal with that,” Heath said, “but being in isolation or being around other people that are stressed, trying to fight that stress and worry about it, is not going to help.”

Stress is a natural reaction by our bodies and can wreak havoc on a student’s school life, social life and mental and physical health, but if used correctly, can actually be proven beneficial to a student.

Heath said a student could use stress to their benefit be-

cause it is that reaction of needing to get something done.

A lot of people will begin to procrastinate when they begin to feel stressed, he said.

“Sometimes, we train ourselves that we’re really good if we procrastinate or if we put something off,” Heath said.

“Stress serves a purpose for them, that it motivates them to get that work done, when they usually wouldn’t want to do it a couple of weeks ahead of time.”

People have to know themselves well in order to balance

that and manage their time effectively, he said.

“If a student gives themselves just enough motivation,” Heath said, “then they can probably get it done better than if they had not.”

Nobody can make a student do anything, Johnson said. They just have realize what they want to do.

“Keep that in mind and remember that’s why you want to do it,” Johnson said. “Just always move towards a goal.” ➤➤awillingham@dailytoreador.com

Holidays are for spending time with family, community Liana Solis family is all they have.

Last Christmas, my family and I were going out to dinner. Nothing out of the ordinary, just a night out.

We had just sat down to order drinks when my mother received a frantic phone call from her work wondering where she was and if we were okay. A little frazzled and confused, more phone calls started flooding into our phones with people wondering if we were all safe.

We hadn’t a clue what was going on until our next door neighbor called my mother and simply said, “Angela, your house is on fire.

It’s pretty much gone. You need to get over here.”

Without even telling our wait-

er, we busted out of the restaurant and drove home as quickly as we could. Fire trucks and police cars were lined up half a mile down the street by our house. Several church and community members were already on scene, waiting for us to arrive.

By the time we arrived, our house was completely engulfed in flames.

The firemen speculated that it had been burning at least 20 or 30 minutes before they even arrived. The fire fighters were struggling to keep it contained, but luckily it hadn’t reached to any of our neighbor’s houses.

All I could think about was all my valuables and belongings that were now burnt to a crisp; we had nothing.

We were escorted to a neighbor’s house and told to stay there until they were able to control the flames. My sister and I were impatiently asking if they had found any pets yet, as we had many pets inside the house.

They told us they hadn’t found any yet, but would keep watching.

Almost an hour after being at our neighbor’s house, one of the firefighters got a phone call from another neighbor several blocks away saying she had found a dog begging to be let in by her back door that seemed to be burned.

When described, we knew it was our eldest dog, Frodo.

What was really important was that my family was safe and we were together.

tores are bustling with shoppers, highways are constantly in bumper-tobumper traffic and post offices are busier than ever.

During the December holiday season, it is easy for people to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of gift giving and holiday cheer.

However, this false meaning of what the holidays are all about gets in the way of what the true focus of the season should be: Family.

To many, family is an important aspect during the holidays, but it is not always appreciated as much as it should be. People worry about what gifts they want to give and receive, the decorations that need to be put out and all the other preparations that need to be made before families arrive.

These worries often cause people to forget that their families are the reason they are doing all this in the first place.

I realize there are some that aren’t close to their families, but there are others in which their

He leapt into our arms and was more excited to see us than he had ever been in his 11 years of life. It was almost as if his pain suddenly became second to the fact that he now knew his family was safe and unharmed.

At that moment I realized that all the materials I was previously worrying about weren’t important.

What was really important was that my family was safe and we were together.

It took three days for the fire to be completely put out. They determined it was caused by an electrical problem in the walls, a freak accident no one could have prevented.

We began the process of build-

ing our lives back up. Luckily, our tight-knit community was very supportive through everything.

Generous donations flooded in to help us restart. I never expected such a fast and amazing response from so many members of my community.

Looking back, even though we had lost practically everything, all the materialistic losses didn’t matter. We didn’t care we had lost all our new Christmas presents we had just received. After all, that’s not what Christmas, or any holiday, is about.

Before worrying about what needs to be put on a Christmas list or how many gifts need to be bought before the holidays roll around, think about the most important aspect of being home for the holidays. Think about the people who helped shape you into who you are today.

Nowitzki carries Mavs past Pelicans 100-97 NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Dirk Nowitzki was not happy with his play or Dallas’ defense for most of Wednesday night. He still found a way to end the New Orleans Pelicans’ three-game winning streak.

Nowitzki scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and had the last of his season-high four blocked shots on a crucial possession in the final minute as the Mavericks beat the Pelicans 100-97 at the start of a fourgame road trip.

Nowitzki gave Dallas the lead with a free throw to make the score 98-97 with 32.3 seconds left. He then got a piece of Eric Gordon’s driving floater, grabbed the rebound and hit two more free throws with 8 seconds left.

“It could have gone either

way,” Nowitzki said. “Finally, we were on the other end one time in execution and getting some stops and getting some big rebounds. It was definitely a good one to get against a very good team.”

Nowitzki ran off a long list of negatives that could have cost the Mavericks the game. The Pelicans outrebounded them 5838. He felt he forced some bad shots in the first half when he was double-teamed, connecting on only 2 of 7 instead of finding the open man. He even missed two free throws after hitting an NBA-best 86 of 91 before Wednesday.

The Mavericks also messed up their final defensive possession, giving New Orleans forward Ryan Anderson a wideopen look to tie the score.

Anderson, who entered as the NBA’s second-most-accurate 3-point shooter at 55.6 percent, missed it with 2 seconds left.

“We switched at the end and left him open,” Nowitzki said. “I don’t know what happened. He had a clean look from the top of the key, which he probably makes eight out of 10, so we really dodged a bullet.”

Reserve Vince Carter had 15 points for Dallas and Monta Ellis added 14 points, with the other three starters scoring between 10 and 12.

Jrue Holiday had a seasonhigh 26 points for the Pelicans, who played without injured forward Anthony Davis for the second consecutive game. AlFarouq Aminu tied his career high with 20 rebounds and added a season-high 16 points.

Beckie, Hinkle named to All-Region Team NSCAA/Continental Tire announced Wednesday Texas Tech sophomore forward Janine Beckie and junior defender Jaelene Hinkle were named to the All-Central Region First Team, according to a news release.

The two players participated in the 2013 season to help the Red Raiders capture a single-season record of 18 wins, and return to the second round of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament.

This honor makes both players multiple-time members of the All-

Central Region team. Beckie is named to the All-Central Region First Team for a consecutive year, while Hinkle earned a third appearance after placing on the All-Central Region Second Team as a sophomore and the Third Team as a freshman.

Their performances on the field are what allowed them to gain these achievements.

Beckie led Tech in scoring with 12 goals and four assists. After her sophomore season, she is already fourth all-time at Tech with 26

career goals, 10 of which were game winners.

Beckie did not relegate herself to just scoring goals in the regular season.

She did some damage in the 2013 postseason by scoring three goals.

NBA game in Mexico City postponed MEXICO CITY (AP) — The game between the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves was postponed Wednesday night because of smoky conditions inside the Mexico City arena.

The matchup will be made up in Minnesota at a later date.

The arena was evacuated about 45 minutes before the scheduled 9:30 p.m.

EST tipoff when a generator malfunction outside the arena sent smoke pouring into the building, according to NBA spokeswoman Sharon Lima.

Mexico City Police said in a statement there was a fire in the generator room on the fourth floor of the modern glass-clad arena that opened in 2012.

“What happened was provoked by a short circuit in the room of generators,”

the statement said in Spanish.

About 15 minutes after the scheduled start, the Spurs bus pulled away from the building. The Timberwolves bus followed soon after.

While the teams were warming up for their regular-season matchup, lights went out in parts of the arena and smoke began coming out of vents in the upper deck. The court quickly became cloudy.

Anderson finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Attorney: Winston relieved of charges in sex case TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A lawyer for Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston says the Heisman hopeful is relieved he will not face charges in a sexual assault case and now even more focused on football.

Attorney Timothy Jansen said Thursday afternoon he had seen his

client after the announcement and he was really happy. Jansen says Winston is absolutely innocent.

Earlier Thursday, State Attorney Willie Meggs said there was not enough evidence to pursue charges in the sex assault case against Winston. Meggs said the woman’s memory lapses of

the events last December were problematic. She told police she had been drinking before the alleged assault took place.

Winston will play in the ACC championship game on Saturday and if the Seminoles win, they’ll play for the national title.
