international competition By REECE NATIONS Staff Writer

Texas Tech's iGEM Raiders took home a silver medal at this year ’s International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition. The iGEM Raiders team consists of undergraduate and graduate students with backgrounds in microbiology, cell and molecular biology, mathematics, physics and chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering, Annette Sobel, associate professor in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, said. "iGEM is an annual inter-

national competition that lets students research and develop biomedical experiments that can benefit the well-being of society," Sobel said. "The diversity of our team makes it easier for us to address issues as they arise, whatever they may be." The iGEM Raiders were one of many teams who met the criteria to win a silver medal at this year’s competition from Oct. 27 to Oct. 31 in Boston, Sobel said. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to teams whose projects met the appropriate criteria for each medal.
