Tech encourages recycling during cleanouts Texas Tech University Student Housing is encouraging students to donate items through their Give Before You Go project.

Until May 22, donation bins will be placed in the residence hall lobbies, and the items will be donated to Goodwill and other nonprofits across the community.

Goodwill accepts appliances, clothing, shoes, bedding, linens, furniture, area rugs, cleaning products, laundry products, brooms, toiletries, bicycles and nonperishable food items, according to the University Student

Housing website.

Paper, cardboard, glass bottles, aluminum, plastic bottles, plastic and clean and dry Styrofoam will all be recycled through University Student Housing.

Items that are allowed are carpet, egg crate mattress pads, wood and cinder blocks, according to the website.

Melanie Tatum, assistant director of sustainability and warehouse operations for University Student Housing, said she encourages students to serve the Lubbock community through donations.

“We don’t want things

being thrown away,” Tatum said. “There are so many things that the students don’t take with them that can be used by other people.

By donating it to Goodwill, you are helping people be able to buy things, and at the same time, the money that Goodwill makes from the sale of these items creates jobs for people.”

The average donations received per year is around 40,000 pounds of Goodwill’s accepted items. In May 2016, about 3,000 pounds of food was donated, she said.

While the more material-

type items are all donated to Goodwill, food items are distributed to the food pantry on campus, Meals on Wheels and Paul’s Project, Tatum said.

“That food gets used also for people who can use it,” Tatum said.

The items do not have to be usable either, she said. For instance, if an individual has a sheet with holes in it, that sheet can still be donated because Goodwill can sell such items to rag companies; or if an individual has old shoes, then it can be grinded and used as football field turf.

Tech agriculture college receives two major gifts The Texas Tech Department of Animal and Food Sciences has received two major gifts from the corporation’s Cargill and Teys Australia. The donations will create an endowed professorship and increase support for research in meat science.

Cargill will donate $750,000 to create the Cargill Endowed Professorship in Sustainable Meat Sciences, according to a Tech news release.

Teys Australia and Cargill worked together to make the $2 million gift for meat science research.

“We are grateful for the investment Cargill and Teys Australia have made to help Texas Tech University provide world-class expertise ensuring a plentiful and reliable food source,” Chancellor Robert L. Duncan said in the release.

remember my little freshman self last semester thinking I had it all figured out. It was finals week, and everyone around me was freaking out, but I remained calm. Some of my classes had optional finals or didn’t even have a final. I was left with only three exams to take, and they all were going to be quite easy.

They were so easy. However, I ended up sleeping through the final for my art appreciation class and went from an A to a C, so there’s that.

college, and I’ll admit I was a total idiot. While I only have two exams to take this time around, they cover a lot more material than I’m used to being tested over in a single exam. I’m right along with everyone else in freaking out over finals.

But, no one likely cares that I was wrong or remembers my admittedly ignorant column. We’re all too busy scrambling to cram as much information into our brains in

time for finals. That, or we’re too busy trying to forget about our dreadful final exams that continue to creep closer.

As a freshman, I can’t offer decent advice for studying and taking finals. I mean, I could say the usual stuff: Get some good rest, eat a healthy meal and don’t try to study everything an hour before the exam. But, we’ve all heard such clichéd advice before, so what’s the point?

Nor can I — rather, will I — offer some voodoo advice like “make sure to eat dragon fruit before studying because it makes your brain form better connections and what not.” I’m not in the business of misleading anyone or buying

into nonsensical advice.

So, what can I do? I suppose I’ll simply offer some words of good luck. May your studies be fruitful and your finals be passed painlessly.

Remember, we’re all in this together; no “High School Musical” reference intended.

As my history professor reminded my class, keep in mind that grades aren’t everything. Grades are stupid.

Grades will try to own you and affect your self worth, but don’t let it. GPA is just a number, and it doesn’t define you.

We’ll eventually graduate — at least, hopefully — and get jobs. I bet no one is going to ask for your GPA. I’ve found that when I’m

stressing over my grades — or anything, really — I don’t perform as well as when I’m calm. Whether your grades are fantastic or you’re trying to make up for that C you got after sleeping through your final, take some time to destress yourself. Watch Netflix, listen to music, play video games: whatever it is that you like to do. Take some time for yourself to get your mind right, and then go out and tackle those finals.

Oh, and make sure to set several alarms. Sleeping through a final is no good, trust me.

Maybe this unexperienced, ignorant freshman does have some good advice, after all. Or maybe not, but that’s for you to decide. opinions@dailytoreador.com

Undergraduate researcher wins Goldwater Scholarship

As an honor to Barry Goldwater, a former U.S. senator, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awards one of the most prestigious science, technology, engineering and math research-based scholarships in the nation.

Amanda Miller, a junior biochemistry major from Plano, has been awarded this scholarship after winning the honorable mention last year.

Miller said she did not start as a student interested in biochemistry even though she has always been interested in science.

When she first came to Texas Tech, Miller started as a pre-medicine student.

But, an interaction with Dominick Casadonte, the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, changed her focus.

“I was a biology and psychology double major, and I thought what I wanted to do was practice as a physician,” Miller said. “But, I met Dr. Casadonte, and he invited me to begin research in his lab. That experience really changed everything.”

Miller said she realized that through a research career, she would have the opportunity to help more people.

Miller said she first heard

about the scholarship through her research with Casadonte.

Casadonte has mentored several Goldwater scholarship winners in the past.

Casadonte said Miller is one of the best undergraduate researchers he has ever had.

“Amanda is amazing,” Casadonte said. “She has incredible lab technique.

She has a very strong ability to analyze a problem and suggest solutions. She is exceptional in her ability to do research.”

When she initially applied for the Goldwater s c h o l a r s h i p l a s t y e a r, Miller received the honorable mention. At the time, Miller said she thought that even receiving the honorable mention was an honor.

“I went into the application process with no expectations,” Miller said.

“I really appreciated getting to participate in the process because I was representing my university.”

Wendoli Flores, director of the National and International Scholarships and Fellowships office in the Honors College, helped Miller with her application.

Flores said Miller stood out to her because of the research experience she had, starting as early as she could.

“I, myself, don’t understand all the technicalities of her research because it is not my field,” Flores said, “but you can tell that she

knew what she was doing, and she was dedicated to what she was doing.”

Casadonte said Miller’s work ethic was different from that of any other undergraduate researcher Casadonte has interacted with.

“Often times, undergraduates will come in and want to do research and have that initial wave of excitement but then don’t have the kind of follow through that you would expect,” he said.

“But, Amanda has worked diligently for two years.”

When Miller started the Goldwater scholarship application for the second time, she said she took the things she learned from not receiving it the year before and made the appropriate changes to the new application.

One of the biggest parts that Miller got the chance to modify in the application was the research essay. This essay is the most challenging and demanding part of the application, she said. “(The essay) is a very long version of an abstract where you can explain all the research experience you have had up to this point,” Miller said. “You can talk to (the readers) in detail about your project. The people that are looking at this application are all professionals in the science world, so it’s not putting it in layman’s terms but expressing it in the technical way like

you were talking to other experts in your field.”

After finding out that Miller received the Goldwater scholarship, Flores said she was excited for her. But, Flores was not surprised.

“I felt like she would get it,” Flores said. “I feel like she worked really hard.

From the last application to the new one, she had increased her productivity.”

After receiving the honorable mention and then the scholarship the next year, Miller said she thought it was encouraging.

By presenting this scholarship, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation is conveying the message that she has the potential to be successful in the research field.

“It really means a lot to be, and it makes me want to continue down the path that I have chosen,” Miller said.

“Being recognized as one of the top-250 undergraduate researchers in the country will help me tremendously … because in some way, I have demonstrated the potential to be a successful researcher. I hope this scholarship will be in some sort of way the foundation vouching for me when I apply to graduate school.”

After mentoring five Goldwater scholarship winners, Casadonte said he thinks Miller is one of the strongest students he has had. Casadonte believes

“One of the most exciting things to me is that the Goldwater Scholarship is something that you would assume goes to someone who goes to schools like

Princeton, Yale, Harvard or MIT,” Miller said. “But, to have two Goldwater Scholars here at Texas Tech in the last two years and to have a long history in scholarships such as these, shows the caliber of the research that is going on here at this university. Texas Tech is just as much in league with those universities in terms of the quality of our research program.” @DavidGayDT

sunk off the New Jersey and Delaware coasts so it can become part of an artificial reef.

The sinking of the Tama-

roa, a 205-foot (62-meter) Coast Guard vessel, took place Wednesday morning.

The sinking initially was scheduled to occur several

months ago, but was repeatedly delayed by rough seas and other related issues.

The vessel was sent down about 33 nautical

miles (61 kilometers) off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey. It was deployed in water more than 120 feet (36.5 meters) deep after

patches were removed from holes that were pre-cut into its hull, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Finals week epitomizes college

A

s I prepare to take the last final of my life, I realize how much I am going to miss the lifestyle of college and how much I’ll miss finals week.

Never again in life will there be a time during which it is acceptable to don the same T-shirt, sweatpants and house slippers for a week straight without anyone giving you a funny look.

Everyone acts a bit different in these times.

People, including me, who would never dream of imbibing nasty sugary energy drinks, down them like there is no tomorrow.

loses sleep. Despite the unhealthy nature of this week, it is refreshing how little people worry about their appearance.

Everyone is so wrapped up in their own stress, that appearances simply fall to the wayside.

For many people, it is the ultimate shot for redemption. After missing half their classes and all of their reading assignments, they put their minds and bodies through hell to obtain a passing grade in the class.

Pulling up their grades on Blackboard, they calculate the specific grade they need on a final to make a passing grade in the class.

Now, some teachers make this easy by making the cumulative point totals of their class worth 1,000 points. However, not all teachers are this friendly.

Regardless, these redemption seekers often need to make A’s and B’s on their finals to achieve a mere 70 percent in the class.

If you are not one of these students, you may experience them asking you for a copy of your class notes.

If you are too busy to respond to this request, don’t worry. Chances are they sent that same text

to 10 other people.

On the other side of the spectrum, there are the floaters. These are the people who have attended every class, done every assignment, and essentially have no worries.

Everyone is so wrapped up in their own stress, that appearances simply fall to the wayside.

Thus, they can float through the week of finals with no worries. All too often, though, they do not take advantage of this

freedom: their studious nature will not let them, which is why they, too, appear unkempt throughout the week.

They, too, will calculate through Blackboard the grade they need to attain on their final, but it is for a different reason. This calculation is often humorous for them.

After doing so, they will joke with their colleagues about how they merely need to make a 22 percent on the final to keep their A. I have been both of these students: a redemption seeker and a drifter.

The ladder is certainly less stressful. However, the redemption seekers are on to something.

For 14 weeks, they get to live one constant party with almost zero worries.

All they have to do is bare down for one week of penance, to justify this lifestyle.

To younger college students, I would recommend being the studious type. I also can’t not recommend the redemption-seeking option because 14 weeks of fun is a chance that you will never ever get again.

No matter which group you belong to, go ahead and embrace the week.

Have fun wearing house shoes all day and drinking energy drinks. It may be the last time you get to enjoy such freedom. opinions@dailytoreador.com

Finals put law student into frenzy W

here does the time go during finals? My sink is stacked full with dishes from all the rushed bowls of Cheerios I’ve eaten.

My laundry has piled up, and I’m using the last few clean — definitely unmatching — socks I own.

My cats have somehow knocked over my bike and shredded an entire roll of toilet paper across my apartment. Why do cats love toilet paper more than brand-name cat toys?

I guess I will never know, and honestly, I’m too busy studying to care about finding out.

I’m 24 years old, and

I can’t study past 8 p.m.

It’s too close to my 10 p.m. bedtime, and I get tired.

When I study past 8 p.m. for my property exam, things get weird. I get groggy and frustrated, and all my senses are elevated.

The car alarm outside in the parking lot sounds like it’s right next to my head.

I try to recover by putting in earplugs, but the earplugs feel too small, and the irrational fear of

having neon-green earplugs surgically removed from my head the week before finals becomes too great of a risk to bear.

I look at my desk lamp, and I can see a spectrum of long beams of light being emitted from the dull bulb. Flipping through flash cards, there is a sensation in my mouth that makes me truly believe I am tasting the color blue.

A cat paw swipes at me from under the bed, and I am convinced someone has broken into my home.

I’m 24, it’s only 8:30 p.m., and I am too busy studying to sleep.

I walk from the law

school to Sam’s West for coffee on Saturday and see undergraduates in trunks and bikinis walking from the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center.

Do they laminate their flashcards and outlines, and study while floating the river?

Does the lifeguard screech practice problems through a megaphone?

Does their professor have special weekend office hours, answering questions and floating on a blow-up dragon named Trudy?

These are the anxietyfilled hypotheticals that run through my head the day before a final.

I fill half a cup of coffee with Raider Awake Blend and half with Snickerdoodle. I would love a break in the pool, but I am too busy studying to take it.

My sink is stacked full with dishes from all the rushed bowls of Cheerios I’ve eaten.

Now, I’ve just finished my first final: a two-hour exam that determines 40 percent of my grade in the course.

I’ve got four days until

my next final: a four-hour exam, which decides 100 percent of my grade.

Does one exam grade reflect my entire understanding of an entire semester’s course? Does one exam reflect the kind of lawyer I’m going to be? I can’t answer that right now.

I’ve got dishes piled up, laundry to wash and clumps of toilet paper to recover from under the sofa.

And, I am too busy studying to think about that right now, too busy studying to write a column about it, and I only have until roughly 8:30 p.m. to finish. opinions@dailytoreador.com

Dietitian, students share thoughts on caffeine consumption

Whether or not one is a morning person, a lot of people tend to start their day with a cup of coffee and maybe progress to other caffeinated drinks later.

According to the Medicine Plus website, caffeine allows one to feel awake through stimulating the central nervous system, and it reaches the peak level of one’s blood within an hour of consumption.

A person can usually feel caffeine’s effects for four to six hours.

Mindy Diller, a registered dietitian for Texas Tech’s Hospitality Services, said caffeine’s effects can be both positive and negative. One example of this is how it works as a balancer for fluids but can still disrupt that balance.

“The water that we re-

tain, we have to replenish daily,” Diller said, “and as we consume caffeine that can certainly deplete that balance and that water.”

Diller said she recommends intake of caffeine to be limited to two cups of coffee and either one soda or one tea a day. The intake should be limited to around 200 milligrams, as 400 is considered an excessive amount.

“As a whole, we have to figure out how much we as individuals can tolerate,” Diller said. “Some people, again, can tolerate more caffeine, there’s people that I know that can’t drink caffeine at all. And I think understanding our own bodies and understanding our limits is half the battle.”

Some positive effects of moderate amounts of caffeine include fatigue reduction and energy sup-

port, Diller said. But, people on campus tend to choose highly caffeinated and sugary drinks over other options.

Melanie May, a senior kinesiology major from Houston, said she does not consume caffeine because when she had it in her system, it kept her up and made her feel jittery.

“I couldn’t sleep for days just from drinking one cup of coffee or soda or something, or even caffeine in medicine keeps me up for days,” May said.

Some people can have negative reactions to ingesting caffeine, Diller said.

They may experience effects such as increased heart rate.

Other potential side effects from drinking too much caffeine can include insomnia, restlessness and shakiness. It can also cause dizziness, anxiety, dehydration and dependency, according to

Medicine Plus.

The main goal of Hospitality Services is to provide all possible options for people and, without encouraging or discouraging, to let them know the pros and cons of consuming caffeine, Diller said.

In her kinesiology classes, May said she learned

about caffeine’s effects, its use as an energetic aid and different doses for different demographics such as athletes, elderly and children.

One other way to stay energized through the day is light exercise, such as going on a light jog after 30 minutes of studying and then returning, May

said. Once the endorphins and hormones go through, May said, one can go back to studying feeling better.

While caffeine can be hurtful and beneficial, a balance of it is okay, Diller said.

"I think for us as a whole, we just have to provide balance," Diller said. @KirbyWarner_DT

efore I took my first set of finals last semester, I wrote a column on how finals in college weren’t that bad, that they were just like taking regular midterms, that I was as prepared for them as I ever could be.

I could not have been more wrong.

I’ll admit, I was right in the sense that taking midterms in college did prepare me for final exams that were worth similarly substantial chunks of my grade. The study habits I developed from taking midterms proved invalu-

able when it was time to take my finals.

However, despite all I learned from my first semester of college, despite how prepared I thought I was for finals, I was wrong.

Finals are an entirely different beast than the runof-the mill midterms.

On midterms, even though doing poorly is

extremely difficult to recover from, it’s still possible to make an A or B in a class if you get a C on a single midterm. You just work harder on the next exam. With finals, there is no next time. The finality of finals — such an obvious concept — still somehow freaks me out.

The cumulative nature of finals is another issue.

When studying for midterms, I can be considerably thorough and review every concept. I didn’t have that luxury when studying for finals. It’s simply not possible to review every-

thing carefully. I have to make executive decisions on what to leave out, which is another thing that really bothers me.

Furthermore, having all these exams crammed together is simply ex hausting. Midterms usually overlap to some degree, but with finals, every exam is in one week.

Aside from the actual studying, my stress levels go through the roof, which is exhausting in itself.

last semester. I mean, it’s obvious. The thing is, despite knowing these facts, I don’t think I actually comprehended them until three hours before my first final. I don’t think anybody can comprehend finals until they’ve actually gone through them.

At this point, I have to add a disclaimer. I freely admit that I’m a Type A, perpetually stressed-out student. What that means is, I worry way too much about getting A’s in my classes and am definitely over dramatizing the situation.

Still, that doesn’t change

the fact that I was naïve last semester. I was going into my finals wide-eyed and confident. When the tidal wave of finals week actually hit me, it felt like I could hardly stay afloat or breathe.

Now, I know what to expect and how much they’re going to suck. It’s inevitable and unavoidable, no matter how much I prepare.

But this time, I’m not going to be caught off guard.

All-night study sessions do more harm than good

he entire week of finals, one can feel as though he has to be constantly studying.

Every second not spent studying may feel like a waste, or he may just be too stressed out to enjoy any other activities.

These are the feelings of almost every student during the last couple of weeks of a semester. I’m going to put together a list of ways to help deal with the inevitable mental pressures that, no doubt, accompany this last week of school.

Long-term stress on the brain can have harmful effects, and the exertion you subject your mind to kills brain cells if bad enough, according to www.youramazingbrain.org. There should be ample reason to study in a state of relaxation, not intense burden.

fers many ways to relieve stress. For those who feel like they’re getting the worst of it, the Student Counseling Center offers mental care and opportunity to share experiences with someone who can recommend healthy changes.

Graduating seniors may also feel anxious about what will happen to them after graduation.

The “catch 22” — being expected to already possess experience in order to gain the experience in the first place — is one that can send a person’s psyche cascading down a

treacherous spiral.

There may also come times when students find they have received the short end of the stick in regard to their final exam schedules. Sometimes you may have two or three finals in one day, but it is important to both not worry and stay focused in your studies.

In some cases, students may have the option of rescheduling a final or two.

However, that usually needs to be done ahead of time. Therefore, we can assume that students need not worry about

(AP) — Brothers Noah, Sumner and Cole Ogrydziak entered West Point's grueling world of 6:30 a.m. reveille, 60-pound packs and rigorous course loads on the same day four years ago. The three cadets are now preparing to fling their caps together at graduation this month, marking a rare fraternal trifecta at this storied academy.

The band of brothers from Nederland, Texas, will graduate with the U.S. Military Academy's Class of 2017 on May 27. The first duty stations for the future Army officers are still being worked out, but it's clear to the brothers that their years of being just a short march from one another are numbered.

"It's kind of surreal to think that, 'Hey, all three of us actually made it here and we're kind of living our dreams, doing what we want to do,'" Sumner said. "And soon enough ... we'll be going off to our own separate duty stations."

Cole and Sumner are 21-year-old twins. They are not identical but share the steady posture, closecropped hair and old-school courtesy common among cadets. Older brother Noah

just turned 23 and spent a year at West Point's prep school before entering the academy along with the twins on July 1, 2013.

Cole compares their West Point experience to having "automatic friends."

They got used to snowy northeastern winters together, learned how to stand in formation and maneuver in the field.

They share the nickname "O.G.," which is easier for fellow cadets to say than Ogrydziak.

But the Ogrydziaks are in different regiments and take different classes.

They are three in a sea of 4,400 gray-clad cadets walking briskly among the imposing stone buildings here. Brotherly connections come when Cole asks Noah for help with a computer course or they share a pizza on the weekend.

"Every so often I'll see them during the day. But we'll try to eat dinner at nights together, and especially on weekends we'll get together and watch a movie. That's always pretty fun," Noah said.

The last time three siblings graduated West Point together was 1985, when twins Rose and Anne Forrester became officers at

the same time as their older brother, John. It's not clear how many other times three siblings have graduated together since the academy was established in 1802.

Less rare are cases in which three siblings sim-

ply attend West Point at the same time. The graduating class this year also includes Arianna Efaw, the third of three sisters from Denver to graduate here since 2014. The three sisters overlapped here for a year.

The entire week of finals, one can feel as though he has to be constantly studying.

In all, some suggest a good night’s sleep and breakfast in the morning.

Cramming as well as staying up late the night before an exam can do

more damage than good to your grade. Some research suggests that getting a good amount of sleep is more beneficial than staying up all night studying.

Tech hosts events during finals week to help alleviate some of the strain.

Late-night breakfast buffets can sometimes be found in certain dining halls across campus. In the University Library, dogs might be available for a little bit of petting time for students who need a cuddle break. @DailyToreador

Baseball provides break from finals F

inals week. Just saying it in my head makes my blood pressure rise.

Most people, including me, are forced to cram study because they have very little time to efficiently cover the course content. When you’re stressed for time, you more or less want to power study all night, take your exam and then relax. However, this isn’t how our brains are designed to function.

single task dwindles the more we focus on that task in one sitting. By taking mental breaks, the brain’s ability to focus on a given subject increases, which allows us to study for longer periods of time.

However, there’s another problem we all face: What

does one do to relax during such a stressful time? For example, my boyfriend of four years has no idea what to do with his free time or how to unwind before hitting the books again. He paces the living room for 10 minutes and ultimately resumes studying without ever taking his mind off the subject. This might explain his GPA. I have an answer for this relaxation crisis we all face.

What is slow paced, easy to watch and extremely entertaining, all in one? Baseball.

I know sports isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but baseball is different than most physical activities. I’ll admit, it is a little slow, but that’s the glorious part. The pace of the game is half the reason it’s such a positive way to relax. You aren’t stressed or worked up when watching baseball; you’re calm and at ease. You don’t get mad that the man at the start of the lineup has struck out because you know there are still two guys who will step to the plate. It doesn’t make your face red when the opponent team hits a home run early on because there are still eight innings left.

I’m singling out baseball because not all sports are relaxing to watch. In fact, some get you physically flustered. It is nearing the end of spring, which means

the NBA playoffs are in motion. I’ll admit, basketball is my favorite sport. However, it might not be ideal to take a break from your biochemistry exam preparation to watch the Rockets and the Spurs play.

Basketball is fast paced, high energy and full of emotional tension. Players are racing down the court, referees are calling idiotic fouls, and coaches are spitting mad.

It’s not relaxing: It’s the exact opposite. I will scream in front of the TV at the 7 feet tall center who can’t rebound a ball or the point guard who displayed a flashy pass that resulted in a turnover.

Simple mistakes and laziness on the court irk me to the core. That’s another beneficial factor to watching baseball. Yes, they do commit errors on the field, but that rarely effects the outcome of the game. I once covered a Texas Tech baseball game

the same day of a test and felt no anxiety at all. It was a close game for the most part, and the Red Raiders committed two errors on defense.

However, Tech pulled off a devastating 21-3 win over that opponent despite the mishaps. I wasn’t stressed or nervous when watching them play. I just sat back and absorbed the simplistic nature of the game.

It’s hard to relax during the mayhem that is final week, but everyone needs an outlet of tranquility. Baseball embodies that to me. It’s simple enough to relax your mind and just intriguing enough to keep your attention. You aren’t thinking about the chapter you just read or the equation you have to solve. All you do is sit back, put your feet up and watch some good oldfashioned competition. @ABoutwellDT

And suddenly, the athlete who’d lived to play football had to begin a life without it.

Dreams of playing pro sports shatter every day. More than 1 million Americans play high school football. But only 6.8 percent of them go on to play in college, according to the NCAA — and of those, only 1.5 percent make it to a major professional league like the NFL. That doesn’t make losing the dream any easier.

This time, the surgeons grafted muscles from a different part of his leg. And once again, he began rehab. But in the weeks after the injury, Eric couldn’t go to football practice. He couldn’t even lift his left leg, and hobbled around on crutches.

Freshman reflects on new working experience

J

ust more than a year ago, I applied for the freshman apprentice position at The Daily Toreador. This was after being the editor-in-chief of my high school’s newspaper and going to Los Angeles because our paper was an NSPA Pacemaker finalist. The point is, I had an expectation to continue to climb higher. I felt like everything rode on my receiving the job I have now.

While I was declined the freshman apprentice position, I was offered the position of being a sports reporter, which I sought the most. In high school, I enjoyed covering every sport that I could, but I especially loved football.

Sure enough, the first sport that I’d cover was Texas Tech football. I was excited for every game, every play and every touchdown.

I got to interview people like coach Kliff Kingsbury and now Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II. This experience, that not many of my age get, did come with difficulties. My first semester as a college student had its ups and downs. Mathematics has always been my kryptonite, and I barely passed the intermediate algebra class in the fall because I failed the TSI. While this job is great, it did limit my ability to study. Not having as much time as I would have if I were unemployed was un-

doubtedly the cause of some stress, but I persevered. I didn’t quit.

Now being a full-time Tech student in the spring after completing the TTAP program, I finally selected my major. Big shocker, I selected journalism. Now that football was over, I got to dip my hands in other sports.

This semester, my “beats,” or main sports, were softball and men’s and women’s golf.

However, softball didn’t start right away, so when others couldn’t cover a sport because of schedule conflicts or other complications, I filled in.

This allowed me to cover such games as the men’s basketball game against Kansas, where the Red Raiders almost beat the No. 3 Jayhawks. I have to admit, it was difficult to maintain my professionalism with such a close game unfolding

before me.

I had been in a similar situation before. It was during the football game against No. 16 Oklahoma, which was a back-and-forth shootout and had me on the edge of my seat. However, I kept my cool, but only until I was back in my residence hall room.

Watching these types of games is different than just being a fan. I was the one writing the recap for The DT. It was a considerably different experience than simply going to a game as an onlooker. And for that very reason, these games will stick with me for a long time.

Spring semester was stressful, as well, arguably because of the addition of multiple sports other than just football, but I still enjoyed what I did. Stress will always follow you, no matter what you do, no matter

how hard you plan and no matter who you are. With finals rapidly approaching, everybody’s stressed, but I’m not worried.

I have to admit, it was difficult to maintain my professionalism with such a close game unfolding before me.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes during this first year in college, but I don’t dwell on them. To make mistakes is to be human, and mistakes help you learn not to repeat them. Plus, it’s only the first year, and I’m likely to make more mistakes as well as have more achievements.

The Bermans have been married more than 33 years and have two adult children, Meredith and Doug.

Both vehicles were traveling in the same direction on a two-lane road when Kathy Berman’s car struck the rear of Bertulis’ SUV, and both veered off the road, according to the police account of the crash.

Berman’s Lexus went down an embankment and overturned in a small body of water. Chris Berman was listed as the car’s owner.
