Construction, demolition projects result in campus changes

Whether it be the second Experimental Sciences Building, Lubbock Municipal Coliseum or the Frazier Alumni Pavilion, Texas Tech students have witnessed the rise and fall of structures on campus this year.

As students are finishing this spring semester, they may take one last look at the facilities on campus and return in the fall to see updated construction sites.

The demolition of the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum and Auditorium at 2720 Drive of Champions is one of the campus sights students can see changing before their eyes.

Chris Cook, managing director of the Tech Office of Communications and Marketing, said there is no exact date of the demolition’s completion, but Tech System

Facilities Planning and Construction plans to complete it before the start of the upcoming football season.

“This space is highly trafficked and used during the season,” he said.

In addition to completing the demolition before the football season, Cook said accommodations will be made to avoid interfering with the current baseball season.

Regarding the space left after the demolition, Cook said Tech President Lawrence Schovanec and his team are still discussing how the area will be utilized.

Stacy Stockard, media relations coordinator at Tech Transportation and Parking Services, said there will be some added traffic as the coliseum demolition continues.

“Our department stays in contact with all those responsible parties to make sure that we can keep the impact as minimal as possible to our

students, employees and visitors,” she said.

In addition to the coliseum, Stockard said the reconstruction of 18th Street from Hartford to Flint Avenue is another project that will take place during the summer.

The buses will come out to 19th Street, and the exact routes and a completion date are still being finalized.

Information regarding the location of certain parking lots can be found on the Tech Parking Map on the TPS website.

Regardless of the details of the coliseum demolition and road reconstruction, the expansion of the Frazier Alumni Pavilion at 2680 Drive of Champions is another project on campus one may notice.

Chris Snead, vice president of operations and engagement at the Tech Alumni Association, said the Frazier Alumni Pavilion is a

10,000 square foot facility for events. The expansion for the pavilion will consist of an addition of 16,000 square feet.

In the fall, Snead said the expansion, which was planned around four years ago, will result in the elimination of the sidewalk on the east side of the building. This sidewalk will be replaced with a new walkway that will go through the Masked Rider plaza from the C2 parking lot to the center of campus.

“An average of 7,000 students walk by that building every day,” Snead said.

“What we want is to give something that all of our alumni and friends can be proud of.”

In addition to facilities that will benefit the Tech community, students can also expect facilities set to improve research on campus.

“This is to be a lab building, a faculty-research lab building,” he said.

ing, Lindquist said most science buildings are at capacity and cannot support modern research.

Campus transportation receives updates throughout school year

Whether it be Lime scooters and e-bikes, Raider Ride or Zipcar, Texas Tech added more alternative transportation op-

tions on campus this past year.

Stacy Stockard, media relations coordinator at Tech Transportation and Parking Services, said the department put out a Request for Proposal, which selected Lime as the pro-

vider for scooters and e-bikes on campus.

“We were really looking for someone that would be a good partner in it,” she said.

“One that the scooters and the e-bikes to be a great addition to what our students can use for transportation modes.”

Cassidy Campos, a freshman education major from Austin, said the scooters have become a popular choice for

student to get across campus.

“If I am running late, they help me get to class quickly,” Campos said. “If I could change something, I would have people check for broken ones more.”

Currently, Stockard said one of the improvements was creating designated parking across campus for the Lime scooters.

the best places for those that would be good for campus and convenient for users,” she said. “We work and make sure continually that those are in good spaces.”

Improving the safety of Lime scooters is another goal Stockard said TPS works to achieve.

“The messaging that you see when you log in to a scooter and open that, encouraging the use of helmets,” Stockard said.

In addition to the presence of Lime scooters, students may use other modes of transportation on campus.

Neil Kilcrease, assistant director of TPS, said Tech combined Safe Ride and Night Owl into one service this past year.

“We now have more hours, more resources in house, and it is cost saving for students,” Kilcrease said. “Citibus originally ran both, and they did a great job before we decided to move that in house. We wanted to stretch transportation funds as far as we could.”

Last fall, Kilcrease said Raider Ride had 24,973 completed trips with a wait time of 17 minutes. This semester, he said there have been 16,806 rides with a wait time of 14 and a half minutes.

“We learned a lot by bringing it in house,” Kilcrease said. “We are very proud of the service and how it has been managing. We are striving to add more student drivers. If we go from the 15 to 20, we can get the program where it needs to be.”

Despite the need to travel within the bounds of campus, students may need leave campus as well.

Zipcar is a car-sharing service Tech added this year, Stockard said. The RFP for it had been in the works for a while.

“It just took a while for the technology and resources

we have on campus to really match with what’s out there,” she said. “So, hopefully, that’s another option, as we see more and more students each year who choose to not bring a vehicle with them. So, we’re hopeful that that could fill a gap in means for those who just need that momentary usage of a vehicle.”

For people who want to utilize the service, Stockard said the two campus Zipcars are in the Z-2 parking lot by The Commons.

“Just like Lime, it’s through an app on your phone, and when you first apply, you’ll apply to the company, and you’ll get a Zipcard. So, it looks kind of like a credit card, and that’s what you’ll use to unlock the vehicle when you have your time,” she said. “You can go online, rent the times that you want for as little as an hour and up to a week.”

Whether one needs a road trip or a run to the store, Stockard said Zipcar can be an option. The cost includes insurance, so one needs to be a licensed driver somewhere not limited to the United States.

When getting to campus, she said 54 percent of students use alternative methods of transportation, which are anything besides a single occupancy vehicle.

“With so much growth of student housing near campus, with the implementation of the apartment bus routes, the bike lanes that you see through areas, like in Tech Terrace and also Overton; all these changes have really helped facilitate that use of alternative transportation,” Stockard said. “As the opportunities and technology out in the world grow, we always want to see if there’s something that might be a good fit and helpful for our students and employees.” @EmmaSippleDT

Locals reflect on NCAA Final Four riot

With success of the Texas Tech men’s basketball team in the 2019 Final Four, one may think of the Broadway bonfire, a couch and Lime scooters on fire and a flipped car.

After the win on Saturday, April 26, fans flooded Broadway and University Avenue in celebration, which later turned into a riot.

Neal Barron, assistant chief of the Lubbock Police Department, said LPD made preparations for the aftermath of the game earlier that week by placing video surveillance cameras and other photographic equipment to monitor the area.

The cameras allowed officers to pinpoint originators of any criminal activity.

When several people in the crowd started to damage

property and set fires, Barron said police officers deployed tear gas to stop the riot. Since the criminal behavior began to cause safety concerns, officers had to disperse the crowds to ensure safety.

“We wanted to offer people the chance to celebrate such an amazing accomplish like that,” Barron said. “But once the celebration becomes dangerous and out of control, we have to intervene.”

Immediately following the events of the riots, Barron said LPD assigned cases regarding the suspects of the criminal activity that took place that night. Officers combed through videos and pictures posted on social media, news outlets and the LPD’s monitor equipment to see who was involved.

During the night, Barron said there were counts of arson, criminal mischief and riot. These cases are still under investigation.

Emma Scott, a sophomore human development and family studies major from Claremore, Oklahoma, said she could hear the commo-

tion of the riots from several blocks away.

“When we heard all of the noise, we decided to walk down to Broadway to see what was going on,” Scott said. “Everyone was so excited and loud. The energy was insane, and it was such a cool experience to be a part of.”

Steve Forcade, manager of Local Bar and Grill, said the riot drove business out the bar because of inability to get in. To prevent future riots, he said there needs to be a stronger police presence to regulate crowds and stop destruction.

With the riot that occurred the night of the Final Four game, one may consider how future events will be handled.

Regarding the NCAA championship game against Virginia on Monday, April 8, Barron said officers learned

what course of action they needed to take. Officers communicated with businesses near and on campus and told them precautions they needed to take in case students caused more riots.

To prepare for future events, Barron said LPD has plans in place regarding how many assets are needed and where to place them.

With the news of coach Chris Beard’s new contract and the talent the program has, Barron said he thinks Tech will continue to be in the public eye, and people will have more opportunity for celebration.

“We are really proud of the basketball team and the fans who chose to celebrate responsibly,” Barron said. “If Lubbock can continue to put its best foot forward, it will be better for everyone.” @DailyToreador

SGA experiences changes, celebrates past success

After a year of working to benefit the Texas Tech community, the Student Government Association is once again going through changes as the semester ends.

Throughout this year, the 2018-2019 SGA executive officers have accomplished a variety of their goals from day one to the last day of their administration.

Sean Lewis, a senior history major from Virginia Beach, Virginia, and former SGA president, said it is difficult for him to choose one favorite SGA accomplishment of this year.

“What I set out at the beginning of the term, what my team and I believed our mission to be is enhancing the Red Raider experience for students on campus,” he said. “I always said in meetings with the internal team, meetings with administrators, meetings with other students is my goal, and our goal is to focus on the bread and butter issues.”

Throughout this year, Lewis said bread and butter issues consisted of factors that impact student retention and the community. Regarding campus progress, he said his team, which consisted of former SGA Internal Vice President Amber Acklie, former SGA External VP Jude Al-hmoud and former SGA Graduate VP John Michael Getz, worked to resolve these issues to benefit students’ experiences at Tech.

His team’s work with Raider Red’s Food Pantry and campus-wide food drives, improving campus safety and announcing students’ honors at commencement ceremonies are accomplishments Lewis said were his favorite.

In addition to his excitement for his team’s accomplishments this year, Lewis said he is also excited for what David Rivero, 2019-2020 SGA president, has in store for next semester. Rivero’s team, which consists of SGA Internal VP Emily Garcia, SGA External VP Miranda Davis and SGA Graduate VP Avery Aiken, has a good foundation to continue the work of past SGA administrations.

“I think they’re in a good position. I’m excited to see what they achieve,” Lewis said.

With the start of the new semester, the next SGA administration may face a variety of issues that need to be resolved.

SGA Director Micheal Gunn said the new administration still has more to accomplish in the coming year.

“After meeting with the new officers coming in and hearing some of their initiatives and their goals for the year, I think that we’re in that place where we’re actually going to recoup even more in the future,” he said.

During next year, Gunn said he hopes the SGA administration can bond with the community on campus.

In addition to the changes made to prepare the new administration, efforts are being made to begin the administration’s initiatives.

Davis, a junior political science major from Wichita Falls, said a lot of hard work has gone into preparing for next year.

“Growing together as individuals in a professional and personal level over these past months has been so rewarding,” she said.

Uber and Lyft pick up spots around campus and community outreach are some of the initiatives Davis said she and her team are working to execute.

“A lot of our initiatives are taking away the financial burden of an everyday student,” she said.

said most of the administration will be working on SGA plans over the summer.

“First and foremost, Red Raider Orientation is what’s next. We have a new class of incoming first-year students, and we will be speaking at a lot of those orientations,” he said.

During orientation, Rivero said SGA will inform incoming students about what student government does and get them excited for the new semester. The administration will also make a strategic plan for the new year.

In addition to the goals his team hopes to achieve while in office, Rivero said he hopes to continue the work Lewis’ administration has done. Lewis’ administration laid out the groundwork for their plans.

“We have worked very closely together on a few initiatives,” he said. “We fully intend to carry those initiatives out.”

Reflecting on where decisions take you F

inishing up my first year of college, I often consider how things might have changed had the decisions I made over the course of the past two years been different. Two specific decisions, however, have already started shaping my college experience into one that will be unforgettable.

For starters, what would my life be like if I hadn’t chosen to apply for this news publication? Having never had any news writing experience, I was apprehensive as I filled out the application and considered my options. After I received the email asking to come in and interview for the features section, I got a rush of nerves I had never experienced before. Especially after the interview, I somehow knew that this was what I was supposed to be doing.

As I sat in training however, I became extremely panicked. What if I wasn’t cut out for this? What if my editor made a mistake in hiring me? I went home in tears, texted my best friend and told him I couldn’t do it and texted the editor-in-chief to set up a meeting, telling her I was quitting before I

had even started.

On the drive over to the newsroom, I was fully prepared to tell her I was not qualified enough or ready enough to take on this responsibility. However, with “Dancing Queen” by ABA blaring from the speakers of my car, I knew that this was not what I wanted to do.

Who was I if I did not at least try? So, I went in there and made up some questions I had conveniently “forgotten to ask” at training and went on my way to my first interview as a features reporter.

What if I had chosen not to come to Texas Tech at all? The spring of 2018, when I was still in Louisiana preparing for high school graduation, I was bound and determined to go to Louisiana State University with all of my friends.

However, my parents sat me down around February and told me they were planning on moving back to Lubbock and wanted me to decide what I wanted to do.

I, of course, was at a crossroads. Do I leave my family behind and go into college alone or abandon all of my closest friends and start with a clean slate?

Having been born in Lubbock and my mother being an alumna of Tech was already a part of who I was. When I started touring colleges in the summer of 2017, Tech had been my first choice, but had ultimately ended up being too expensive. However, this would be the opportunity to go to my dream school.

After a few days of going back and forth in my brain and a lot of tears, I knew what was best for me. I sat my parents down and told them I wanted to be a Red Raider. I didn’t know what would happen after this decision, but I knew that good things were awaiting me in Lubbock. My friends were devastated.

“A thirteen-hour drive?” they would ask, completely in shock. But, with a bright smile, I would reply “yes.”

I was ready for this change and could not wait for college to begin.

When it came time to start packing for the big move, I started feeling nos-

talgic, finding old letters from friends or pictures from events from years ago. Did I really want to pick up and start a whole new life 13 hours away from what I’ve always known?

I also got into a relationship about two weeks before I was set to move to Lubbock, making it even more difficult to say goodbye to Baton Rouge. Even though I would be back in two weeks for one final beach trip with my church, I did not want to leave. I did not want to go to Lubbock, I did not want to start my life over. I was comfortable where I was, and suddenly completely unprepared for everything I was once so excited about.

However, two weeks in Lubbock passed, I went back to Baton Rouge, and everything was already different.

I felt out of place and like everything had somehow shifted out of proportions. This place I had once called home now seemed like the guest room of a friend’s house.

By the time my trip to Baton Rouge concluded, I was left with a weird feeling, an ended relationship, and no sense of direction. Lubbock was foreign to me and

Baton Rouge was no longer my home. It was like I was a nomad, traveling from place to place with no home. Even if I was surrounded by family, I felt lonely, especially because classes had not started yet. But somehow among all of these feelings, I still knew this was where I belonged.

I would not trade these decisions for the world. Yes, there were bumps in the road. There were times when I thought I would never be able to get out of bed and feel at home in Lubbock. There were times when I’ve wanted to turn in a story along with my two weeks-notice due to the amount of stress I was facing then.

However, had I not made the decisions I did, I would not have met some of my best friends today, I would not have seen history being made on the basketball court and I never would have known campus like I know it today.

When people think of Lubbock, they may only think of Tech and … that’s it. However, I think of late-night Insomnia Cookie or Sonic runs, sitting in the Market trying to find a student who looks like they would give a good interview or laughing

with my co-workers in the newsroom about the things we see and hear on a day-today basis.

I think of all the people, both friends and family, who have helped me to where I am today. While there’s still a long road ahead for me, I know two things are certain.

Tech is where I am supposed to be; The Daily Toreador has helped me realize this for a fact. Whether it’s covering an event like the annual drag show or doing a profile on a well-loved professor, Tech has shown me that it is the little things that make campus so great.

Lubbock has become my home because of the people I have met along the way.

My best friends have made this year so much more enjoyable despite the ups and downs, my family has always supported me in my decisions and my professors have helped me love what I do.

I would not trade any of the decisions I have made because they helped shape me into who I am today. So, thanks Lubbock. Maybe you are more than just wind and dust after all. @MRosettaDT

On top of all of this, you have a little voice in your head that is making every situation feel ten times worse. The little voice is called anxiety and it’s very much a part of my life.

Even on my best day, that little voice is doing everything to tear me off my pedestal.

Everything is going great; I’ll sit down with Chris Beard in a Fireside Chat. He recognizes me from press conferences. I’m walking on water, then the little voice tells me I shouldn’t be there. I shouldn’t be covering one of the best teams in the country because

I’m just an 18-year-old girl.

I’m often told I am lucky that I had a chance to cover the basketball team this year.

I suppose I am, but then I hear that little voice again.

It tells me I’m in way over my head, that I can’t do this, and it tells me no matter what I do, I’m going to fail.

Being a female covering sports isn’t easy. It’s even harder with the little voice.

There are days where I ask myself, why am I here? Is it worth it?

The days when my energy is drained, the little voices tells me to stop, to give up because I am not good enough.

These are the days when I listen to it and let it affect me, these are the days when I tell my friends I am busy when I am lying in bed and not busy.

When I am standing side by side with people from KLBK

and KCBD the little voice asks me why you are here and says I’m not qualified. On the bad days, I listen to it.

I swear I have a point. As finals near, we all have “little voices” saying you’re going to fail this test. You won’t maintain that 3.5 GPA, you won’t graduate, you won’t get a job. You will fail. Everyone is putting on happy faces but meanwhile, inside you just want to go home to your parents and your pets.

The secret to making the little voice go away for me is to accept it is there. Acknowledge that anxiety is there, something we all experience, and can be a good thing making you aware of situations that are important or that you should be more cautious of. But have a big voice that overrules the little voice and lets it know things are okay, that you got

this. You’re going to ace this test. You will maintain that 3.5 GPA, you will graduate and get that job. You will succeed.

The days when your energy is drained and the little voice tells you to stop, to give up because you are not good enough, listen to the big voice and let the little voice know you got this. Go out with your friends, don’t lay in bed and tell your friends you are busy.

When the little voice asks you why you’re successful and why you are where you are, let the big voice tell it otherwise. Even on the bad days when you are vulnerable.

Some days come when I just want to be a normal student. A student who can go to basketball games for fun. A student who doesn’t have deadlines, but that’s just the little voice talking those days. My big voice tells me

I am happy and I am super blessed to have this job as a freshman. I am happy I have this job, I am blessed I work side by side with people I admire like those who work for KLBK and KCBD. The little voice is overprotective, and can always be overridden by the big one.

The big voice is called friends, family, coworkers, optimism and determination. So, as we wrap up this spring semester, listen to the big voice that loves you and supports you.

Acknowledge that the little voice is there, like acknowledging your student loans exist but don’t obsess over them, and know that the big voice is there to guide you. Cause guess what? You got this and know that I believe in you. @EleanorGuinanDT

A day in the life struggling through finals

Y

ou wake up to the sound of your phone alarm, but when you go to turn it off, you realize it’s your car alarm.

Where are the keys? You probably slept on them and that’s how the alarm went off, because there’s no way someone broke into your crappy car.

Once you wake up and turn off the car alarm (after finding your car keys under your bed), the phone alarm and go out the back door (making a point not to see if your car was actually broken into), you’re on your way to take your last final.

Your ex definitely looks just as scattered as you. Maybe it really was meant to be. You should text them later.

By this time, you’ve walked to school and made more awkward eye-contact

with your ex, so it can’t get much worse, unless, of course, you forgot your pencil or a Scantron.

But, for the sake of time, let’s say that you did remember your Scantron and pencil, even though the teacher mentioned several times that you wouldn’t need a Scantron. If anyone asks why you brought a Scantron you don’t need, your best bet is to just tell people that you’re saving it for your next final (even if you don’t have another one).

You walk to class and what do you know, the kid you haven’t seen since the beginning of the semester is sitting in your spot, having shown up to class for the first time in months and is completely unaware of the chaos they have just created for you. Sitting in the back

isn’t so bad, so just do that.

The test is now being handed out and after realizing that the person sitting next to you smells like booze and looks miserable, your spirits are immediately lifted, because you’re already doing better than at least one person in your class.

You now have your test, and after answering all the multiple-choice questions, you notice the person sitting next to you is also staring at your test, so you’re a little crushed because maybe you’re not doing better than them, after all. After looking around the room at all your peers, you start to realize that not many of them showed up to take the final, so you really are doing better than someone (maybe).

After summoning the

mental strength to start on the short answer questions, this is when those distracted thoughts about life start to hit you: will I ever get out of this room? Did I lock my front door? Did my car get broken into? Is this even the right classroom?

By the time you’ve finished thinking about your life and how you’re (probably not) going to change the world by the time your 30 years old, you’ve already written all the short answer questions with your best guess, and the guy sitting next to you finishes his test at the same time as you (what a coincidence). Pom, Cheer Squads recap successful year

By MEGAN MOSES Staff Writer

After an event-filled season, the nationally-ranked Pom and Cheer Squads reflected on their success and determination which brought them another national title this season.

Bruce Bills, the coach for the All-Girl and Co-Ed Cheer teams, said the teams had an overall great year.

“The students did a great job you know representing Texas Tech on and off the floor, from practices to gamedays,” Bills said.

The team GPA and community involvement also increased, which Bills said made him proud.

“You knew that, especially for the Co-Ed team, that it was a special team, that there was a connection there,” he said. “The team work, the drive was obvious at last year’s tryout.”

The Co-Ed team’s mastery of skills impressed Bills, as they would accomplish goals faster than he could create them, he said.

“I would have kind of a practice plan and they would accomplish that in the first 10 minutes,” he said. “It was a fun opportunity for me to challenge them to get new skills and you know work together in that aspect.”

Competition practice started back in the summer before the school year started, Bills

said. However, the first few months of the fall season are devoted to game-day skills.

“We work that throughout the rest of the fall, and then we hit it hard in January, and so it starts earlier than what people think,” he said.

Two-a-day practices over spring break further condition the teams to firm up the national routine, Bills said.

In Daytona, Florida, the location for nationals, the squads had a positive feeling as they fine-tuned their routines before showtime.

“They were locked in, they knew what to do,” he said. “In (preliminary scoring) they were in first place, and so that was another confidence boost.”

After winning first place at Nationals, the team celebrated by running into the ocean for a championship picture on the beach, Bills said. Then, six chosen members of the team, including seniors, hopped on a bus with the Pom Squad to cheer on Tech men’s basketball in Minneapolis at the National Championship game.

“That was just another unique piece of the puzzle this year, (we’re) very excited and honored to be a part of that,” he said.

Part of the All-Girls team also participated in preliminary men’s basketball postseason and traveled with them as well. Tryouts for both cheer teams start May 17, Bills said.

Erin Alvarado, Pom Squad coach, said this is the largest squad Tech has ever had.

“We took 26 on our team, which is the biggest our team has ever been in squad history,” she said. “We had 19 veterans and only seven rookies, which was huge for us.”

The team had been working on their nationals’ routines since August and stayed over Christmas break for basketball and practice, she said.

“Once we were in Daytona (for nationals), it was it was a little bit of a different feel this year,” she said. “My focus was split between getting everything ready for the Final Four and being at nationals, and that’s never happened before.”

Because of the large team size, Alvarado said she split them up for different sections of competition.

“We competed with 20 in pom and 20 in jazz which was new for us. Most teams compete with like 14 people, so it was a risk we knew we were taking but one that we wanted to take on,” she said.

However, the girls had little time to revel in their victory as the men’s basketball team had advanced as well, she said.

“We won pom, we went to the beach, took two pictures.

They hopped in the shower and hopped on the bus (to Minneapolis),” she said.

The senior class helped lay the foundation for a successful program, Alvarado said.

“Our senior class this year was our first class that had witnessed major success here,” she said.

The team maintained a GPA higher than they have ever had, and many of the squad members are involved in extracurricular activities, she said.

“Because the product is so good on the field, the product is so good at nationals that it’s easy to forget the hours that these kids put into it,” she said.

Tryouts begin May 4, including an interview round followed by two rounds of

dancing and a circuit training designed to test candidate’s mental toughness.

Most notably, many students from out of state as well as two men will be trying out for the team, Alvarado said.

“I have a feeling next year is going to be our most talented team we’ve had by a long shot,” she said.

Stephanie Rhode, the Spirit Program director, said she has been working on building the Spirit Program ever since she came into her job 16 years ago.

“My goal as a program is

to have our squads represent Texas Tech in the best way we possibly can,” she said.

The success of the year was gratifying, Rhode said, considering the time spent building up the program.

Further, having a successful program attracts others to the team from across the country.

“Last year we had students representing 17 different states,” she said. “You know, that’s a big deal, you’re getting kids from Alaska, Washington State, California, New Hampshire, Florida.” @MeganMosesDT

School of Theatre & Dance members discuss how renovations affected season

With the announcement of the construction of the Charles E. Maedgen Theater, the Texas Tech School of Theater and Dance had to figure out how to put on its regularly scheduled events without the necessary spaces it was used to.

While it may have been a difficult season, it was also one that inspired a lot of hope within the students and Lubbock community.

Cory Norman, the director of marketing and communications and the company director for the School of Theater and Dance, said this past season’s site-specific design was set to bring theater into areas where theater had never been done.

“It was all sort of on purpose,” he said. “We knew we wouldn’t have access to those spaces due to the construction.

Instead of looking at that as difficult, our director decided to look at it as an opportunity.”

Having the site-specific season was at times difficult and challenging, but ultimately a fun, unforgettable experience, Norman said. Producing out of the element was one of the main challenges, but Norman said the students took the punches and rolled with them every step of the way.

When thinking about next season and the addition of the

new theatre, Norman said he is looking forward to seeing how the first production uses such a flexible space to perform. Having real classrooms is another benefit he is looking forward to.

“I think if you asked everyone in this department that question, they would tell you something different,” he said. “It is exciting, fun and new. We can’t wait to see what our students do with it.”

Mark Charney, director of the School of Theater and Dance, said some of the challenges he and Norman faced were finding sites around Lubbock that would allow their productions to be hosted there. However, he said many local businesses and facilities were helpful and interested in the process.

One of the bigger struggles was trying to find the right plays that would fit in with the designated locations, such as the Equestrian Center. However, Charney said it was fun trying to fit everything in and designing places around the space.

“We had to think a lot in terms of what our audience would want and how far they would be willing to go,” he said. “It was worth it though because when our students leave, they will be trained to design in unconventional spaces for future careers.”

The students in the School of Theater and Dance have

been working in inferior spaces for quite some time, Charney said. With the lack of classrooms and performance spaces, it was harder for students to be able to be as flexible with their performances. However, the new theatre will give them the opportunity to perform like never before.

Charney said although the new theater will be beneficial to the department, he wants to make sure the students still give back to the community

using their talents.

“One reason we went to the community was because our mission was that Lubbock becomes our campus,” Charney said. “Instead of just asking people to come to us, we wanted to bring theater to them.”

Jared Roberts, the technical director for the School of Theater and Dance, said the school lost access to the space where it was able to create all the sets for shows, but it has been able to find a way

to create eight new shows in unconventional locations.

“Being able to break the mold and think outside the box for design and to technically implement shows into new spaces has been the most difficult, but most fun part of this season,” he said.

For every show, Roberts said the crew is used to a set amount of space and exact drawing of how everything would be set up. Coming into these outside locations, they were unsure of exactly how

much space they would have or if there was enough power to do what they normally could.

With the addition of the new theater, Roberts said he is excited to see how students break in the new space.

“We have to figure out the rules of this space and how the space breathes and gives life to shows,” he said. “This past season has helped us develop the language we need to move into this new space.” @MRosettaDT

Debate Team concludes championship year

In a record-breaking year for Texas Tech, the Parliamentary Debate Team added to the university’s success by making history competing at and taking home titles in three national championship tournaments.

“It was one of the best championship runs we’ve ever had,” Maria DeMarco, a member of the debate team and senior communications studies major from Salt Lake City, Utah, said.

The team competed in the National Round Robin hosted at the University of California, Berkley, the National Parliamentary Debate Association National Championship (NPDA) hosted at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City and the National Parliamentary of Excellence (NPTE) hosted at the University of Nevada, Reno.

At the National Round Robin hosted in February, of the two teams Tech sent to compete, Fiker Tesfaye and Max Groznik, placed first at the championship and Mario

DeMarco and Cody Gustafon placed fourth. Additionally, Tesafye won top speaker.

The National Round Robin can be considered the most prestigious national tournament out of all three because it is by invitation only and each school can only send their top two teams, DeMarco said. For Tech to win at this level was amazing.

“We had won or closed out five of the seven tournaments that we had went to, but to have it happen on a national scale at that level is something you can’t really be prepared for. It was really amazing,” she said.

These incredible results speak to success of the debate program, Adam Testerman, director of forensics for the debate team, said.

“Even clearing at a tournament that is this competitive and this difficult is an incredible achievement,” he said.

“We cleared two of our teams to the outround and we faced off against incredible debaters from Cal Berkley, Rice University, etc.”

Tesafaye, a senior sociology major from Denton, said she also received top speaker at both the

NPDA and NPTE, in addition to her previous National Round Robin award, making history.

“Winning those top three national speakers awards was really amazing for personally because that’s something that nobody has ever done,” she said.

“Nobody has ever won two of them in the same year, so to win all three was so mind-blowing.”

The team’s success can be attributed to the work put in

by members of the debate team as well as the coaching staff, DeMarco said.

“Other institutions do have a lot of great resources,” she said.

“But I would say that Tech has the best coaching staff and also has a great focus on utilizing the kinds of things that we learn in our courses and our classes and applying that to the way that we debate.”

Topics at the debates include social issues, political issues, and cultural issues. Members of the team must be familiar with the material, as in some of the tournaments, they are only given the 15 minutes on the topics before the actual debate.

“The weeks leading ups to the tournaments, the month before is definitely the most intensive,” she said. “I would say I was putting in around 15 hours each week of research and in addition to that we had many practice rounds.”

The bond the team has also played into its success this year, she said. From the coaching staff to the students, everybody is hardworking and

want to get better and win.

There is a healthy drive along with close friendships.

“They foster not only a really competitive team but also a really close and tight knit family almost, and I think that’s something Texas Tech does extremely well as a university,” she said. “It makes you feel sort of at home and with you friends and family.”

This season was the culmination of years of work of the seniors on the team, Testerman said. On the top three teams this year, five of them were seniors. From the many semesters practicing and going to different debate tournaments, the team was in place this season to win the championship.

“When you start the year saying our goal is nothing less than to win every single tournament that we attend and set our eyes on the highest prize we possibly can, I think that has the effect of causing everyone to raise their game, and so I don’t know, the debaters just pushed themselves,” he said. @AkhilaReddyDT

Texas Tech chess team earns national accolades

The men’s basketball national championship run has brought Texas Tech a new level of recognition on behalf of students, fans and more.

However, many may not realize that even prior to this year’s success, Tech has been home to another nationally competitive team: the Tech chess team.

The chess team has finished as one of the top four teams in the Pan- American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships for the last five years, Alex Onischuk, head coach and director of the chess program, said.

The Pan-American is the biggest tournament in collegiate chess.

This year, although the team did not qualify to be one of the final four teams, they were extremely close to qualifying.

“We were half an individual point behind the qualifying place.

It happens,” Onischuk said. “I consider chess a sport, or at least chess has elements of sport and when you compete against other strong teams, I mean it can happen, especially considering that more and more strong teams enter the competition.”

The team went on to place in two other major tournaments during the spring semester, Onischuk said, taking home national and state titles.

In February, the team competed in the Texas Southwest Collegiate in Dallas, he said,

taking home second place.

“We finished overall second at that one, which was good result,” Onischuk said. “We always try to win obviously but this year the UT Rio Grande team played very well.”

In March, the team competed in the U.S. Collegiate Rapid and Blitz Championship in Saint Louis, claiming second place in Blitz and 3rd place in Rapid, he said.

The U.S. Collegiate Rapid and Blitz involved a different kind of game relative to classic chess, Iryna Andrenko, a master’s student studying horticulture from Simferopol, Ukraine, said. Andrenko placed first in women’s rapid and women’s blitz.

“It’s basically the same rules

as classic chess, but you have limits, time control,” she said.

“So for the blitz, I believe it was 3 minutes and plus two second increments for each move, and for rapid it was 10 minutes for each player and ten seconds increments for each move.”

Both tournaments were very competitive, Luis Torres, an MBA student from Mexico City, said. But, Tech performed well, even though it was often competing against schools with more highly ranked players. “(In Saint Louis), we were like the underdogs,” he said. “I think we were one of the weaker teams like by numbers.”

The team spirit is one of the reasons the team is so consistently competitive, Torres said.

“We play each other all the time. We help each other. We even hang out outside of chess and school in general,” Torres said. “So I think the team spirit, with Coach Alex helping us, is really important and you can see that in the tournaments that we play as a team. We lose as a team, we win as a team.”

The Chess team’s success makes it possible to recruit students like Torres and Andrenko to the university, Onischuk said, where they go on to train, travel and represent Tech. Maintaining a competitive team is not easy.

“We train hard. We have great support form administration. We have some scholar-

And I think we have similar challenges, you know recruitment, training, so similar challenges.”

Getting to be a part of the chess program has been an incredible opportunity, Andreko said. In Ukraine, where she grew up, she didn’t have the opportunity to travel and compete

because of finances.

“Here you have such a great opportunity to travel, to represent Texas Tech, to win trophies. titles and it’s cool,” she said.

As this year concludes, Onischuk said the team is already at work and hoping for more titles and first place finishes in the next year.

“Hopefully next season will have even more success,” he said.

Tech starts new era under Wells

The Texas Tech football team has seen major changes in its coaching staff as the team is making a switch between former head coach Kliff Kingsbury to Matt Wells.

As head coach at Tech from 2013-2018, Kingsbury posted a 35-40 record, giving him the second-worst winning percentage in school history with a .467, according to sports-reference. In Big 12 play, Kingsbury led the Red Raiders to a 19-35 record.

Kingsbury coached the team to three bowl games including the Holiday Bowl in 2013, the Texas Bowl in 2015 and the Birmingham Bowl in 2017.

In his time at Tech, Kingsbury only coached the Red Raiders to two winning seasons (2013 and 2015), according to sports-reference. The Red Raiders were nationally ranked in three seasons under Kingsbury with the best ranking occurring in 2013 when the team was ranked as high as No. 10.

Transitioning into Wells’ tenure as head coach, this will be his first-year coaching with Tech football team.

The Utah State football team was coached by Wells from 2013-2018, according to sportsreference. The Aggies had three winning seasons of the six under the guidance of Wells, as he posted a 44-34 overall record as head coach. Wells’ teams appeared in a bowl game four of the six seasons he was coaching

including the Poinsettia Bowl in 2013, New Mexico Bowl in 2014, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2015 and Arizona Bowl in 2017.

Wells is coming off of his best coaching season as he coached the Utah State football team to a 10-2 record, being nationally ranked as high as No. 14, according to sports-reference. The season led to him being named the MWC Coach of the Year for the second time as he garnished the award in 2013 as well.

Prior to his termination after the 2018 football season, Kingsbury was an offensive-minded coach. He coached players such as Case Keenum, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb, Nic Shimonek and Patrick Mahomes, who have all made an appearance in the NFL. Freshman quarterback Alan Bowman decided to stay at Tech despite the coaching change for his sophomore season.

“I think it’s hard because when new coaches come in, they didn’t recruit you.” Bowman said. “They weren’t inside your house, they didn’t know you for so long until you just met them. In the last coaching staff, they knew who you were, they knew your mom’s name, your dad’s name, they knew your past and what you had.

So, I think coming in with that new coaching staff, it’s kind of hard to still be yourself and not do too much for the new staff.”

Kingsbury ran an air raid offense and his was consistently ranked at the top of the national football rankings.

As Kingsbury took his coaching talents to the Arizona Cardinals, Wells has taken the Red Raider football team and started implementing changes since he stepped foot in Lubbock.

Wells quickly hired six new coaches to help guide the Red Raiders including outside receivers coach Jovon Bouknight, defensive backs coach Julius Brown, offensive line coach Steve Farmer, running backs coach DeAndre Smith, tight ends/inside receivers coach Luke Wells and strength and conditioning coach Dave Scholz. Wells also hired former Red Raiders Joel Filani and Mark Thommerdahl hours after receiving the head coaching position. He also hired new offensive coordinator David Yost and defensive coordinator Keith Patterson.

“I hired Joel Filani in 24 hours,” Wells said. “I hired Mark Thommerdahl in three hours. I’ve known Joel, never worked with him. Coach Yost coached with him at Washington State. Obviously, he and Antonio (Huffman) were teammates, they played together.”

Many think the air raid offense at Tech will die next season, but that doesn’t mean the team won’t be strong on offense.

Yost will still have Bowman and a core group of receivers returning to lead the Red Raiders.

“Defensively (the scheme) is 100 percent new,” Wells said. “Offensively, there’s a decent amount of stuff that’s new, but I don’t know what (Kingsbury) called.”

With Yost and Bowman leading the offense, Wells will most likely improve the team on a defensive end. In his time at Utah State, his teams had an S&P+ top-50 defense every year, according to SBNation.

If the Tech defense can make

some improvements, the Red Raiders could be a force to be reckoned with in the Big 12.

“We got 20 hours a week, we’ll try to use them all,” Wells said regarding Bowman’s training in the new system.

Everyone can predict what

they think will happen next season under the reign of Wells and his new staff but the first time fans will see how the Red Raiders look will be on Aug. 31. as Tech will take on Montana State at home. @MaxHengstDT

Womble continues construction 5 months later Alcohol sales to continue at

By ELEANOR GUINAN Staff Writer

Five months after construction was started on the Dustin R. Womble Basketball Center, the foundation is poured and the structure is starting to be built.

As the facility is being built, parking will continue being scarce in Commuter West and students will have to find other places to park. Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said the parking situation is a good problem because the school is getting such a valuable facility. After the Womble is constructed, there will be more parking spaces for students to park in for basketball games

and for everyday parking.

“What a great issue we are having to deal with, you know, this was not the case three years ago,” Hocutt said. “This is a short term inconvenience that we are going to have to manage, but in the long run we are looking to add a few parking spaces to our parking opportunities around the arena.”

Stacy Stockard, media relations coordinator at Tech Transportation and Parking Services, said there will be some added traffic as construction continues “So, those are things we just take them as they come; we make adjustments as needed,” Stockard said. “Our

department stays in contact with all those responsible parties to make sure that we can keep the impact as minimal as possible to our students, employees and visitors.”

The Womble construction will have some impact on parking in the coming school year, Stockard said. Over the summer, Transportation and Parking Services is planning on expanding the C10 parking lot north of the Horticulture Gardens and Greenhouse Complex.

“We’re creating some new parking in there this summer to replace those spaces that were lost with the Womble Center construction,” Stockard said. “Those are scheduled to be

Three months after Tech Athletics broke ground on the facility, Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Womble to the Tech System Board of Regents. He was appointed as a regents because of his contributions to Tech.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Hocutt said the Womble will be finished in about 16-18 months. Everyone in the athletics department is hoping to have it up and running in a year.

After a successful Spring selling alcohol at Texas Tech sporting events, the practice will continue during the 2019-2020 school year.

Alongside alcohol sales, Tech has also reduced the price of several menu items available, making Texas Tech sporting events more affordable and enjoyable for the average fan. For the first time in program history, alcohol will be sold at Tech football games this Fall at Jones AT&T Stadium.

With fan attendance at football games a growing problem, Tech Athletics has

placed an emphasis on keeping fans engaged and plugged in to the atmosphere, especially after halftime. The introduction of alcohol sales along with mobile chargers for phones are just two of the changes tech has introduced to make gamedays more enjoyable for the average fan.

Tech has also introduced water refilling stations around Jones AT&T Stadium with the goal of helping fans stay hydrated in the Texas heat, along with balancing out alcohol consumption for fans. @JayStraderDT
