Vice President for Graduate Affairs Saba Nafees officially took office Friday for the 51st session of the Student Government Association.

Nafees, who has been involved with Student Government Association since the 49th session, will be taking over the office from Pradeep Attaluri and plans to finish several of his initiatives, she said.

“Student Government Association is the medium in which administration can understand what students want,” Nafees, a mathematical biology graduate student from Fort Worth and Lahore, Pakistan, said, “and I think that connection is extremely powerful.”

Specifically dealing with graduate and international students, Nafees said she would like to help them move on to leadership positions.

She wants to encourage international students to take leadership roles at Tech, she said, and believes no matter where someone comes from, there is a leader

Texas Tech University Student Housing encourages donations during move out Texas Tech University Student Housing is collecting any unwanted items from both on- and off-campus students who are packing up their residences this week.

Items can be taken to any residence hall lobby until May 15, according to a Tech news release, during the Give and Go Move Out collection drive.

A Goodwill truck will also be outside the United Supermarkets Arena between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. May 13-14, according to the release, where anyone can take donations.

All appliances, clothing, shoes, bedding, linens, furniture, area rugs, cleaning supplies, laundry products, brooms, toiletries, nonperishable food and bicycles can be donated, according to the release.

“Sometimes students from other countries or students who are studying here for a short period of time feel like NAFEES they do not have the right to lead, but you do,” she said. “You just need a little bit of empowerment, and so that’s one of my big goals, getting these graduate students and international students to feel empowered to lead so that they can help their constituents.”

Out of the eight seats allocated to graduate senators, Nafees said international students fill all except one.

Nafees said an important part of her position is vouching for graduate and international student concerns such as health insurance, transportation, financial assistance for research travel and getting full benefits for graduate assistants such as research and teacher assistants for all departments.

“Health insurance is not something

The Tech Recycling Center is open 24/7 behind Housing Services, according to the release, and will accept a variety of items including paper, cardboard, beverage containers, all plastics and plastic foam.

Pizza boxes, tissue paper and items with tobacco, food or trash are not accepted, according to the release.

Without these benefits, many graduate students have a difficult time surviving financially, Nafees said.

With many of these graduate students being international students, they have very limited options as to where they can work legally, she said.

Nafees will work to complete the initiatives of former graduate vice presidents, which includes providing shuttles for new graduate students at the Lubbock airport and working with the University Career Center to find employers looking to hire students with advanced degrees.

Nafees said she also wants to implement a food pantry idea to allow graduate and international students who may not have money to be able to buy food on campus.

“The overarching theme that I am going to live by is ensuring that our entire student body, whether it is undergraduate, graduate or international students, know in their heart that SGA is there for them 110 percent with our blood, heart, soul,

everything that we have,” Nafees said.

“That is all that we are here for, we are here to lead them to more success, we here to lead them to a better experience at our university.”

A year from now, Nafees wants to look back and see the gap close between different types of groups on campus, she said.

“Saba is someone who is so successful and influential in our school and community,” Holton Westbrook, president of SGA, said. “When you look at her time and influence in the senate, her outreach across state and federal government, or her servant-driven heart, you’ll easily understand why this individual is one I am beyond blessed to work with in this next year.”

Saba is currently working to raise money and aid for the country of Nepal.

Through her platform, Tech has raised more than $8,500 for Nepal, she said.

Faculty member, students receive Public Relations department awards The Department of Public Relations in the College of Media and Communication has recognized two students and one professor for outstanding work this school year.

Lauren West, a senior public relations major from Coppell and account manager of the student-run public relations firm RaiderComm, was awarded the inaugural Public Relations Student of the Year award, according to a Texas Tech news release.

“Winning this award means everything to me,” West said in the release.

“Since I am graduating, it is nice to see the progress I have made and things I have learned building up to this. I have had an amazing undergraduate experience, and it is extremely cool to be going out on such a high note.”

Wesley Metter, a senior media strategies major from Plano and vice president of the Media Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group, won the Media Strategies Student of the Year award.

Autumn Shafer, an assistant professor and faculty adviser of Define Your Line, received the Public Relations

Faculty Member of the Year award, according to the release.

“It is humbling and feels quite special to be recognized in this way by other faculty who I respect,” Shafer said in the release. “I have put a great deal of effort into creating the most useful classes for my students, doing research that matters, collaborating with other faculty and also volunteering for service within the department. It is nice to be acknowledged, although all of the other faculty members are amazing. I just try to keep up with them.”

Committees chose the inaugural winners of the three awards, according to the release. Students were chosen based on an application process.

Three public relations finalists and three media strategies finalists were selected based off applications, according to the release, and the winners were chosen after interviewing all students.

Texas Tech administrator named to national task force Associate Vice President for Research Alice Young has joined the Task Force on Laboratory Safety, which was created by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.

The Texas Tech administrator,

along with the other members of the task force, will provide recommendations to research universities about laboratory safety.

“A strong safety culture is a critical part of faculty and student success in our laboratories and

studios,” Young said in the release.

“The APLU task force will build on the work that Texas Tech’s facultyled Institutional Laboratory Safety Committee has done to reinforce the importance of faculty leadership in identifying hazards that may accompany creative laboratory and studio work and in working with our Environmental Health and Safety professionals to mitigate any risks.”

According to the release, Young will serve on the task force alongside representatives from universities across the U.S., including Utah State University, Harvard University, Cornell University, University of California-Los Angeles and Michigan Technological University. ➤➤@DailyToreador

Finals will not determine outcomes of life F

inals are often the time when many students stress out about what scores they need to get certain grades in classes. While sometimes these scores are manageable, some often add great amounts of stress to students.

The definition of an acceptable grade varies from person to person. Some students are content with passing classes while others are not satisfied unless they get A’s. I have been the second type of student ever since I was in elementary school, and sometimes I would be upset if I got below an

Jennifer Romero A on a regular assignment. I was slightly better as I got into middle and highschool, but I still strove for only A’s in my classes.

When I came to Texas Tech, my dad gave me a long lecture about how I needed to keep my grades up to keep my scholarships or I would have to come home to a

smaller university. I think he just wanted to make sure he told me to be serious in college because he is my dad, but I was never concerned about my grades. I had always pushed myself in school harder than anyone ever had to push me, and I was not going to let my habits change in college.

Last semester I took a very technical class in the geosciences department, and for once I had no idea what was going on in class. I decided to work harder and essentially taught myself the material outside of class, and I had a low A through the end of

the semester. After I took the final, I felt fairly confident I had maintained my A, and I focused on another class I was on the verge of a B in. I managed to get an A in the other class, but my transcript now had a brand new B+ next to my geoscience class.

It was at this point where I realized A’s are not the most important thing in a college career.

I was disappointed, but I accepted it as something that was likely to have happened at some point in time. My GPA is no longer the perfect 4.0, but no one has seen my new GPA as anything less.

I know most students do not really care about getting A’s to the extent I did, but I still feel the message translates. We all have some type of expectations for ourselves for whatever reason. Maybe our parents are strict or we want to be competitive in the job market or maybe we just have high standards for ourselves. Either way, there are going to be many times during our lives where we do not meet all of our expectations. It is more important to go into things with a positive attitude and accept the less than ideal moments of life.

You may be able to get an

amazing grade on a final and earn the grade you want, and I hope you do. It is not worth stressing and studying for two days straight though. College is a steppingstone for better things in life, and there will be struggles sometimes.

The most important thing is to keep moving forward no matter what, and a few tests at the end of the year will not determine your entire future.

Finals are here, but students who attended class should not worry Michael W Cantu ith most of the semester almost completely behind many students, now is the time to relax instead of worry about how well test grades will be on final exams.

Think of it this way — if you went to class then the final shouldn’t be too hard, if you did not, good luck.

It’s in every instructor’s first day of class speech that attendance correlates with grades, and the statistics do prove this. According to the American Educational Research Association there is a clear relationship between class attendance and overall GPA. What this means is whenever test time comes around there is

a higher chance for the students who actually go to class to have the higher grade, as opposed to those who would rather stay in the bedroom.

That doesn’t mean that it is going to be extremely hard for a student who skipped a few days to be able to catch up and try and rescue their grades. What this means is there’s a lot of information that

has already been given to these students, and those who weren’t there are going to have to track it down themselves.

This does leave the problem of not knowing what information to go over, though. So in this instance it might be time to swallow some pride and ask the instructor or professor what some key points are. Even though it might be a bit embarrassing and damaging to a reputation, attempting to gain that knowledge is far better than bombing a final test.

Just going to class isn’t the important part of finals preparation, but actually knowing what materials were gone over is very helpful.

Clinton email practices ‘not acceptable’ WASHINGTON (AP) — A highranking State Department official said Wednesday it’s “not acceptable” for any agency employee to conduct government business on a private email server as former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton did.

Joyce Barr, the agency’s chief freedom of information officer, made the comment under questioning from Republican senators who used a Senate Judiciary hearing on open records laws to attack Clinton over her email practices.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said that Clinton’s approach amounted to a “premeditated and deliberate” attempt to avoid open records requirements.

Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said that anyone who took such an approach should be fired, and asked Barr whether it would be considered acceptable.

Barr said that she had not been aware of Clinton’s decision to conduct all her State Department email on a private server but that the agency has now made it clear to employees that such an approach would not be acceptable.

“I think that the actions that we’ve taken in the course of recovering these emails have made it very clear what people’s responsibilities are with regard to record-keeping,” she said. “We continue to do training, we’ve sent department notices, telegrams, we’ve talked to directors and I think the message is loud and clear that that is not acceptable.”

Clinton, who is running for president, has defended using a personal email account while serving as secretary of state as a matter of personal convenience. She says she has turned over to the State Department all work-related emails — more than 30,000 of them — though House Republicans investigating the 2012 attacks on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, are demanding more. They insist the server itself should be examined by a third party.

A spokesman for Clinton’s campaign declined comment. Clinton has agreed to testify on Capitol Hill later this month at the request of the special committee investigating the Benghazi attacks.

Barr acknowledged problems with the State Department’s overall performance responding to open records requests, calling an existing backlog of 18,000 requests “unacceptable.” But she insisted improvements were being made even as the number of requests keeps growing and the agency is understaffed. Like other government agencies, the State Department is bound by laws including the Freedom of Information Act that generally require them to maintain records and make them available to the public when asked, with some exceptions.

If you went to class just to go, then there isn’t much of a benefit, besides angering the professor because you’re asleep in the front row.

Actually getting something out of a class makes it worthwhile.

There shouldn’t be any reason as to why there was no knowledge absorbed when a student walks through the exit of that classroom at the end of every lecture or lab.

There’s always something to be learned and something to be added.

Obviously this isn’t to say don’t worry about anything, the test will figure itself out, because it won’t. Yes there needs to be study time, and yes there needs to be some effort put into that

time, but there isn’t any need to worry. Being able to comprehend any class materials should be easy as long as attention was given and understanding was complete.

Of course there are some situations where it might not always be that easy, but in most cases an interesting subject and interactive notes and attention fix the small problems. There should be no reason to cram last minute, because now is the most important time to fix up a schedule.

It’s in this preparation that a confident new student can be hatched, because attempting to overcome the fear of failure will definitely instill a confidence that

will be beneficial. Through this, with rest and relaxation, there can be no barrier that keeps you away from the beauty of a passing grade.

There’s no use in getting too worked up over tests such as these, which are only going to bring more stress into the environment and going to do more harm than good.

Rest, relaxation and confidence are going to be the key points that will bring a student to a successful end of the semester and hopefully into a relaxing summer.

Texas Tech students should rethink downtown Lubbock T

he Lubbock downtown parade on Saturday was beautiful, albeit a bit lonely. As crowds gathered on the lonely streets to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, it provided the perfect portrait of downtown: an area full of optimistic citizens, but an area ultimately neglected.

Fortunately, plans are in motion to rejuvenate the historic area. Even with a plan, however, it will take renewed student effort and attention to help revitalize downtown into the area it used to be.

“People ask us what is going on downtown. They don’t see anything,” Lubbock Economic Development Alliance President John Osborne said in an interview with EverythingLubbock.com.

It is true that Lubbock’s downtown area has been dormant for quite some time. The downtown area used to house several luxurious businesses, such as the Pioneer Hotel, Hemphill Wells department store and several beautiful theatres. Currently, only a few historic places remain open.

When Levine’s department store closed last year after 95 years, according to a Lubbock Online article, it appeared as another sad sign to downtown Lubbock’s health.

This downtown decline is not a good thing. An unhealthy downtown is detrimental to attracting newcomers and businesses. In an interview with Forbes, CEO for Cities president Lee Fisher explains, “The cities that capture the mobile, college-educated ‘young and restless’ are the ones who are most likely to revitalize their downtowns and accelerate economic progress in their cities.”

A large majority of the Lubbock population, however, has yet to see the importance of a thriving downtown environment. The city continues to expand greatly to the South and Southwest. Instead of taking up business in Lubbock’s historical

Jarrod Miller downtown streets, new businesses opt to instead build new buildings in developing parts of the town.

This abandonment of the downtown area should be a major concern to Texas Tech students. The downtown area is close to the Tech campus and serves as one of Lubbock’s few defining factors. As visitors, including potential Tech students, come to see Lubbock, they will most likely see the deserted downtown.

Despite the neglect, downtown Lubbock is beaming with potential.

It already has great restaurants, such as Italian Garden or Giorgio’s Pizza, and more people would bring even more. It already has great art venues, such as the Lhuca or the GlassyAlley Gallery, and more people would let these venues shine. It even has fantastic bars, such as the Blue Light Live and Louie Louie’s Piano Bar, proving downtown has the perfect atmosphere for nightlife.

What downtown Lubbock needs is a plan and people to support it. El Paso has recently started a revitalization plan in its downtown area, and, according to the El Paso Times, it has finally begun to invigorate the downtown area. By giving tax benefits to those who build downtown, and aggressive building and construction, El Paso has begun to raise civilian pride by building a beautiful downtown area, including the beautiful Southwest University Park baseball stadium.

Fortunately, several Lubbock investors and leaders have plans in motion for change. At the forefront of the operation would be Marc and Dilbert McDougal, who, to continue

a record of Lubbock redevelopment, have secured a five-year contract with the city to develop the area.

Between the large investments from groups such McDougal Companies and the city of Lubbock, the downtown area once again has hope for revitalization. This redevelopment will provide some exciting times for Lubbock. In a LubbockOnline article, Marc McDougal talks about the reopening of the historic Pioneer Hotel, as well as the possibility of a light rail system.

If some think these plans are ambitious, take heed that Lubbock leaders have much experience with redevelopment. After all, this redevelopment is what led to the transformation of the “Tech ghetto” into brand new student housing and the esteemed Overton Hotel.

This isn’t to say that the redevelopment process will go easily. For example, as the city has looked to redevelop the Citizens Tower building in downtown, an asbestos and mold infestation has led to many problems, according to a LubbockOnline report, which has led the city of Lubbock to seek removal efforts, and if met with success, will lead the Citizens Tower to be redesigned into a new city hall.

Because of these efforts, it is imperative students rethink the downtown area. While the downtown area is incredibly close to the Tech campus, it often remains neglected by the student body.

By supporting upcoming businesses that cater to students, more businesses and accommodations will come to the area. The area has the potential to return to the beautiful part of Lubbock it once was, and with much student support, it can once again become the downtown area that Lubbock deserves.

Society should pay teachers better to improve education Conrad Polkosnik From a different perspective, Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times states, “If we want to compete with other countries, and chip away at poverty across America, then we need to pay teachers more so as to attract better people into the profession.” It is obvious that we must have an educated staff teaching our children in public schools. Without professional and educated teachers, where do our children find motivation to reach for goals that they have never thought about before? If we, as a nation, invest in those that provide a basis for a motivation to students to reach for a higher education, our future as a country can reach heights that it has never been to before.

If we as a country don’t pay our teachers a higher salary, they will simply take their knowledge and use it elsewhere for the betterment of themselves, leaving the less fortunate and uneducated youth in the same economic standing they started or grew up in. But if we are to stress the importance of the roles teachers play for this country, wouldn’t we prove it by simply raising their salaries?

Everyone knows how much of a difference having a good teacher makes. From personal experience, the teachers that get to know their students more than just inside the classroom but on a personal level truly make a difference on the student’s performance in the class. By having a teacher that truly cares about his or her students, the students return the favor by showing a tremendous amount of respect for their teacher and wanting to earn the best mark one can to make the teacher happy.

According to Erik A. Hanushek of Standford University, “an excellent teacher (on a standard deviation better than average, or better than 84 percent of teachers) raises each student’s lifetime earnings

by $20,000.” Basically what this proves is that not only are these great teachers important to the short term goal of doing well in the specific class they are teaching, but the importance of the impact that these great teachers have on each of their students’ future.

Teachers are the backbone of this country’s future. It is without argument that teachers have one of the most influential, important and impactful jobs that deserve more praise than that of which is given.

Without our teachers and without their angel-like patience with their students, there would not be future Congressional leaders, nurses, doctors, surgeons or lawyers.

If we don’t raise their pay, we will begin to lose great, passionate teachers. We will lose students with the same passions to become great in areas of which they may never give themselves such opportunity. Ultimately, we will lose the excellence of which this country is made up of and regret the simple task of not paying those who may share their greatness and intelligence with others.

ccording to the 2009 Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools, Americans think more money should be spent on early childhood education. Now some might believe that Americans are out of their mind, while others may believe such an act is very important for the future of the country.

With the rise of technologybased distractions along with negative societal influences invading children’s lives, teaching may become more difficult. It is important that we as a nation stress academic and moral values as early as we can to the future leaders of this country rather than having them learn from such a corrupted and immorally-valued society today displayed through glorification of inappropriate behavior and unjustified acts all over news networks.

The Gallup Poll also favors higher starting salaries for teachers at about $43,000 a year, which is roughly $7,000 more than the average starting salary of education majors in 2009. Many Americans, and even myself, believe this salary in itself is too low. With a higher salary, teachers will be more involved with their students, displaying care to the student and giving them more motivation to learn.

Sometimes when the average person thinks about the job of a teacher, many aspects behind the job go unnoticed. “Many teachers have the patience of saints dealing with classrooms full of children all day for 180 or so days out of each year” according to a USA Today article.

Also, many forget the credentials it takes to become a teacher.

“Teachers generally must have a bachelor’s degree level education and also a state-issued teaching certification, which may involve some sort of additional education or a preparation program,” according to the article. Becoming a teacher isn’t an easy task whatsoever. You must be educated and sometimes must have experience whether it is working for a tutoring center to being a teaching assistant.

Dissenting opinions, viewpoints should be heard

C

ommunication is important in today’s society until someone disagrees with your opinion.

The intersection of the police and racial differences has been at the forefront of many debates lately. While at the recent Cops and Race debate at Texas Tech, I heard many dynamics discussed regarding the Ferguson shooting and, in general, the apparent divide between law enforcement and minority citizens.

Between claims of the times being “open season on blacks,” as several panel members said, and those of it being a communication issue between police and other citizens in general, common themes began to emerge.

The one thing everyone at the forum, panelist or audience member, seemed to agree on was that more communication between the community and police, and more involvement in the community by police, was needed to help with the various issues that stem from the mistrust between much of the minority community and the police.

In the midst of these calls for more communication, Lubbock County Republican Party Chairman Carl Tepper made an excellent point that was at first missed by almost everyone. It is a point many in today’s society seem to miss in general. Communication has to freely go both ways to be effective.

Right after the preceding panelist referenced to a statistic about the number of shootings in predominantly black neighborhoods, Tepper referenced a statistic about crime in black neighborhoods.

Immediately much of the audience seemed outraged and the black panelists acted outraged over his referencing of the statistic. The interesting part of this fracas was that both statistics were correct.

Later on in the debate, Tepper, after an audience member angrily

John Bowles asked why the panel had gotten off of the subject of race, pointed out that he wanted to talk about race.

He pointed out that every time Republicans in general want to talk about race, they get slapped down and told not to talk about it.

Of course, several days later there will be shouting about Republicans not talking about race when they had the chance.

Another recent development occurred at the Oberlin College in Ohio, which is considered by many to be one of the great liberal arts colleges in the world. Signs were publically posted criticizing Republican and Libertarian students at the college for bringing a certain speaker to campus.

The signs had the names of members as well as “perpetuates rape culture” under each name, as seen in an image sent to reason.com by a concerned student who asked that reason.com not reveal his or her identity for fear of retaliation.

What speaker caused such a forceful reaction among some in the student body? Christina Hoff Sommers did. Sommers is a feminist, American Enterprise Institute scholar and the author of “Who Stole Feminism?”

According to Katherine Timpf of the National Review, when Sommers spoke at Georgetown University, students placed “trigger warning” signs outside of the speech and held up signs essentially advertising that the feminist would be advertising anti-feminism. Some of these signs advertised a “safe space” for those traumatized by a fellow feminist’s views conflicting with their feminist views. Sommers’ speech as violent. An op-ed was even put in the Oberlin Review accusing Sommers of being a rape-denialist.

David Bernstein of The Washington Post made his opinion known: “Today’s college students are going to be tomorrow’s judges, and if they truly believe that ‘safety’ means ‘never having to deal with opinions that disagree with one’s cherished beliefs,’ then censorship has a good chance of gaining the upper hand over freedom of speech. After all, public safety can be a justification for suppressing speech, as with the ‘fighting words’ doctrine.”

Sommers said about the events surrounding her speech on the campuses, “People are always eager to censor and to find new excuses, and this is original, that it undermines your personal safety and subjects you to panic attacks to hear a dissident opinion.”

Basically, what is going on is the suppression of some ideas in favor of others. This is called censorship, and is the opposite of free speech, which is the very thing that is such a celebrated founding principle of America.

College campuses were once places where new, different and dissenting views were celebrated and examined. Why does it seem that political correctness is replacing freedom of speech? Is “Fahrenheit 451,” a book warning of a society that espoused political correctness over free speech, no longer read in grade school?

Or is it that we in America no longer care about the right to offend people that maybe should be offended, the right to point out when someone is being closeminded or the right to publically compare our view to the views of another individual no matter their station in life? If you don’t like the narrative, change it.

Opinions May Vary: Tech Coach of the Year Writers of The DT discuss which coach on campus did the best job during the 2014-15 academic year

Whitaker shows fight, promise for future with young team W

hile I believe there are many coaches on campus that are deserving of the “Texas Tech Coach of the Year” award, Candi Whitaker, second-year coach of the women’s basketball, seems like the best choice to me.

Despite women’s basketball not exactly filling the United Supermarkets Arena for games, here is why Whitaker is more deserving of this award than some other coaches one could make a case for.

I will start with the most popular sport at Tech, football, and its coach Kliff Kingsbury.

After covering the football team for the 2014 season, I do not buy into Kingsbury being too much of a “players coach” and not being able to discipline his team.

While he might seem like the most laid back coach in the country, it was obvious throughout the season Kingsbury was not sleeping much, if at all.

Kingsbury and his staff also have recruiting going for them. In a few years,

Jeremy Krakosky Tech could be welcoming in some impressive recruiting classes because of his staff’s abilities.

That being said, Kingsbury has to be automatically eliminated from the Tech Coach of the Year discussion because of the disappointing 4-8 record. After a huge Holiday Bowl win to end Kingsbury’s first season here, he cannot follow it up with a losing record in the most popular sport on campus and be in the running.

Moving on to Tubby Smith and the men’s basketball team, the program suffered through a 13-19 overall record, including 3-15 in Big 12 Conference games.

Simply put, the team’s underwhelming record came because of being one of

the youngest teams in the entire country.

Due to the Red Raiders playing multiple freshmen and sophomores in large roles, this team is going to improve dramatically in the coming years.

Plus, Smith and his staff have shown they are capable of bringing in talented recruits.

While I do like what Smith is building at Tech, he is not the Coach of the Year.

After reaching the first College World Series in school history last season, Tim Tadlock and the baseball team entered this season with goals of not only going back to Omaha, but having more success there than last year.

With one series remaining in the 2015 season, the baseball team is in danger of missing the NCAA tournament altogether.

Even though that is not all on Tadlock, if the team does miss the tournament, an argument could be made that they were the most disappointing team on campus this season.

If the Red Raiders do sneak into the tournament and make it all way back to the College World Series, Tadlock could easily be the most deserving of the award.

Now to make Whitaker’s case for Tech Coach of the Year.

Before the 2013 season, the former Lady Raider player returned to Tech. The team was coming off a first-round exit in the NCAA tournament in the previous season, but it had lost all five starters and had really only one player with experience left on the roster.

The team’s inexperience and unfamiliarity with each other and the coach were clear as the Lady Raiders had a historically awful season.

They finished 6-24 and were shut out in conference games, going 0-18.

Clearly frustrated, Whitaker hit the recruiting trail and returned with numerous talented players.

With what seemed to be an even younger roster this past season, Whitaker and the Lady Raiders won their first four

games of the season, despite not having their leading scorer, rebounder and team leader Amber Battle.

They finished the nonconference schedule with a 10-3 record.

While the team’s 5-13 Big 12 record will not blow you away, there were six conference games that were decided by six points or fewer. This shows the team was by far more competitive in the Big 12 from year one to year two with Whitaker.

The Lady Raiders lost in the first round of the conference tournament, but if they had won they were projected to make a postseason tournament.

The fact that with a young team, Whitaker advances the program from not winning a Big 12 game all season to being one win away from the postseason is enough to convince me of her coaching talents.

Hall of Fame coach Marsha Sharp has noticed Whitaker’s efforts and believes Whitaker is going to be great for the university.

“Whitaker is a great fit for Texas Tech and Texas Tech is a great fit for her,” she said in a Tech Athletics news release.

“Candi’s basketball IQ and work ethic are incredible.”

In addition to dramatically improving the women’s basketball team in a short amount of time this past season, Whitaker has signed multiple impressive recruits for next season, again.

Jada Terry recently announced that she will transfer to Tech.

The center is listed as the eighth-best post player in the country, according to ESPN Hoopgurlz.

Because of the programs clear improvement this season and what they are working toward in the coming years, Whitaker is a great choice for Tech Coach of the Year.

Tom Stone continues to up ante each year, deserves Coach of the Year

W

hen I tried to decide who ranked as Texas Tech’s best coach of the year, I followed a list of criteria to narrow down the list of Tech coaches.

I considered how many games the team won overall, how it fared in the Big 12 Conference, how many ranked wins it collected and if the team accomplished any milestones during the season. Of all of Tech’s candidates, coach Tom Stone’s season with the Red Raider soccer team fit the criteria I followed.

Although many teams across Tech’s athletic spectrum achieved their own individual success in the Big 12 and

Diego Gaytan in NCAA competition, Stone’s 2014 season took the Red Raider soccer team to a new level of success the team didn’t achieve in previous seasons.

Tech soccer finished with a 16-4-2 overall record and a 4-1-1 Big 12 record, fulfilling my criteria for a team needing to show a winning overall record and a Big 12 record.

Throughout the season, even in NCAA and Big 12 competition, the Red Raider defense appeared nearly impenetrable as the team finished the season by only conceding 12 goals and allowing more than two goals in just two matches. Tech’s defense shined as it averaged just 0.86 goals per game, according to a Big 12 release.

Stone’s 2014 season didn’t present a one-dimensional approach to the game, however, as Tech’s offense complemented its defense and rattled its rivals.

No team in the Big 12 scored more goals or recorded more assists than Tech, according to a Big 12 release.

The team showed its offensive prowess

in its 8-0 trashing of Prairie View A&M in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The dominant performance ranked as the biggest goal differential win for any team in the Big 12, according to a Big 12 release.

The Red Raider soccer team in the 2014 season showed the program’s potential early in the season by defeating a No. 11 Notre Dame squad 2-1 to pick up its second win of a nine-game winning streak, Tech’s best start in school history.

Tech defeated another No. 11 team during its nine-game winning stretch by defeating a California team 1-0 in double overtime. Tech’s wins over its

ranked opponents served as a prelude for what the awaited the team.

During Stone’s nine-game win streak and Tech’s Big 12 competition, Stone showed teams why they must consider Tech as a team on a rise. Before Stone’s arrival in 2007, Tech had not reached a single NCAA tournament.

Stone’s 2014 season marked a third consecutive NCAA appearance for Tech its first time to reach the Sweet 16.

The 2014 season presented Tech with a string of firsts for the program and changed the identity of Tech’s soccer team. In 2014, Tech took the role of the team to chase.

Assistant Mike Smith does not make excuses during dismal season

L

ooking beyond solely head coaches at Texas Tech, you would be hard pressed to find a Red Raider coach that was more impressive this past year than Mike Smith.

Smith started his second season on the Tech staff in his same position, outside linebackers coach, but was promoted to interim defensive coordinator for the final nine games of the season after Matt Wallerstedt left the program.

Immediately, a difference with the defense was seen on the field.

While it still had clear issues, the defense was playing harder and faster under Smith.

I believe Smith was coaching to his players’ abilities, which is what a good coach does. Numerous players mentioned how they are thinking much less with Smith and playing on instinct.

The Red Raiders finished the season 4-8 and the defense ranked in the last in the Big 12 Conference, allowing 513 yards per game. While both of those numbers are awful, the defense was trending upward at the end of season.

Players had bought into his method and the defense could only improve under him in the offseason.

In addition to Smith’s work on the field, he also impressed me off the field.

Jeremy Krakosky In a press conference late in the season, Smith went on an epic rampage by calling out Wallerstedt, without actually saying his name, for sharing Tech’s defensive signals with other teams.

“I sure hope I don’t run into him anytime soon,” a furious Smith said at the press conference, according to a previous article in The Daily Toreador.

For Smith to publicly go after someone that had betrayed him, the players and Tech was great to see. Smith clearly takes pride in his alma mater and will defend it.

Another reason I know Smith is committed to Tech is because of the physical work he puts in. As a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator, he told multiple players that they needed to gain or less weight or they would not play.

To be fair, Smith also dropped a significant amount of weight alongside his players.

After the season was over, Tech had

to decide whether Smith would remain defensive coordinator or if they would bring in a new voice.

When Tech decided to hire David Gibbs as the defensive coordinator, I was surprised to see Smith was happy to stay on the staff and move back down to a position coach.

Smith’s humbleness showed coaching is not about the money for him.

It also showed Tech is truly where he wants to be.

Due to his tireless work ethic on the field and his commitment to the Red Raiders, Smith could definitely be the coach of the year for Tech.

displayed Tech’s steady climb under Stone. With three consecutive postseason appearances in the last three years, Stone knows what it takes to reach the NCAA tournament once again.

Tech’s 2014 season altered Tech’s image of a NCAA hopeful to a NCAA probable, and Stone’s winning ways will breed even more success for the team.

Now Tech’s Sweet 16 appearance is just another peak for Stone and the Red Raiders to surpass.

Petty remains consistent as 2014-15 coach of year F

or the Lady Raiders, head coach Todd Petty has outperformed and surpassed any expectations he had when he took the head coaching job for women’s tennis at Texas Tech.

Petty began his seventh season coaching at Tech this spring. During

his seven years at Tech he has brought in many standout tennis players and also athletes who have excelled in the classroom. In total, Petty has shaped 24 Academic All-Big 12 selections.

The work Petty’s team has put in this season has been nothing short of dominance. With a record of 15-4,

Brandon Soliz and 5-1 in Big 12 Conference play, the Lady Raiders finished tied for first and fell just short in capturing the Big 12 championship.

Lubbock was also chosen to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships. This is the second time that Lubbock has been chosen within the past three years.

His team is also ranked as the No. 16 team in the nation. During the season the Lady Raiders even picked up crucial wins against top ranked Big 12 teams.

Petty has had a Top 20 recruiting class since he became the head coach.

He has signed nine five-star recruits, and in my opinion, has done everything to be recognized as Tech’s coach of the year.

Petty’s only competition would be the impressive coach of Tech’s track and field teams, Wes Kittley, and soccer coach Tom Stone. Stone was quite impressive making it all the way to the NCAA National Championship game but came out in second place after losing to the Florida Gators with a score of 3-2.

With the way the dominant sports teams played this year, I see these three deserving of this title.

Football coach Kliff Kingsbury did not do too well, especially with the signing of his contract extension right before his team started the season,

which ended with a record of 4-8 and 2-7 in conference play.

Women’s basketball coach Candi Whitaker did show improvement, and I must say that the 2015-2016 basketball season should be something to look forward to, and the same goes for Tubby Smith with the men’s basketball team.

If this were last year I would have chosen baseball coach Tim Tadlock as coach of the year, but since the season, started the NCAA World Series tournament team has not shown up on nearly the same level and it seems to be too late to turn things around.

Personally, watching the way Petty coaches and interacts with his players shows why he is deserving of the award.

Four out of the past five seasons Tech has won and tied for first place in the Big 12.

Petty knows the game and shows it

through the way he coaches his athletes.

With only one senior, five freshmen and two sophomores this year, Petty and myself are excited to see this team grow into a dominant team not only in the Big 12 but on a national level.

His young team made it to the Big 12 Championship this season already and all signs point up for this talented team.

Petty has me behind him as he seeks to capture a national title for Tech, a feat that has yet to happen since the 1993 women’s basketball team behind Sheryl Swoopes and legendary coach Marsha Sharp.

Petty should be coach of the year.

Not flashiest coach, Kittley still best on campus

A

s the sports editor for The Daily Toreador, I have been able to interact with nearly every head coach on campus, and to me, there is one who stands above all the rest, both as a person and as a team leader.

That is Texas Tech track and field coach Wes Kittley.

Kittley is in the middle of his 16th season as coach of the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders, according to Tech Athletics, compiling five Big 12 Conference team championships and four NCAA top 5 team finishes in that time, not to mention dozens more individual marks.

While the veteran coach’s career resume is no doubt impressive, Kittley proved himself again this school year by out-coaching everyone else on campus.

Coach Kittley doesn’t have the benefit of a completed season like his counterparts Tom Stone or Candi Whitaker, but the performances his

Everett Corder track and field program have put on so far this year are more than enough to set him apart.

One thing Kittley mentioned time and time again when talking to the media this year was that he is better as an outdoor coach and his team is better suited for the outdoor season.

Besides the sense of humility Kittley shows by pointing out his own flaws, the coach still managed to take the men’s team to a program-highest second place finish at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.

Tech then sent 12 athletes to the NCAA Championships for indoor season, where the men’s team took

fifth overall and several women earning top five finishes.

Around the same time as the Indoor Championships, Kittley earned an award naming him coach of the year for the Mountain Region, something no other coach on campus did.

Kittley then lived up to his word in outdoor season, with all kinds of school records, facility records and conference athletes of the week.

The only way I could see anyone arguing against Kittley is that he does not personally coach every single track and field event.

However, all of the assistant coaches were recruited and brought to Tech by Kittley, and they all coach within his system and philosophy.

Kittley also recruits athletes as well as anyone at Tech. While I would give the recruiting edge to baseball coach Tim Tadlock, Kittley does an incredible job, especially at the junior college level.

This was most obvious this year

with junior hurdler Chris Caldwell, who only got to Tech in January.

Caldwell had already been dominating at the JUCO level in Iowa, but said himself most of his talent was raw and undisciplined. It took Kittley and the rest of the coaches’ tutelage to help him compete at the NCAA level, and he has responded with multiple school records and first place finishes.

Overall, I think the best measure of a coach is how close he was to a national championship. While Tadlock could still lead Tech on a College World Series run, or tennis coach Todd Petty could bring a women’s national championship, it seems likely that Kittley will be the closest, making him the best coach of this academic year.

The bad feelings toward Houston’s star center originated when he wanted out of Orlando and intensified amid rumblings that he couldn’t get along with Kobe Bryant in his one season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now in his second season with the Rockets, who host the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, Howard sat down with The Associated Press to talk about his image, how he dealt with missing the most games in his career and a new community initiative he’s passionate about.

Howard is a fun-loving guy who

almost always wears a huge smile and is quick to crack a joke or make up a silly nickname for everyone in his path. So when he realized that people had started to hate him he wasn’t quite sure how to deal with it.

“Sometimes it hurts,” Howard said.

“It used to hurt a lot more as I went from this guy that everybody likes to everybody hated me because I wanted to play basketball on another team.

And I’m like: ‘Hey listen it’s really not that serious. If I stopped playing today, your life is going to be the same, my life is going to be the same, it’s just I’m not going to be playing basketball. So why should it matter what I decide?’”

teammate Josh Smith knows a thing or two about being hated himself. He was called a cancer and worse when he was released by the Detroit Pistons before signing with the Rockets and has helped Howard deal with the venom.

“Some people are concerned and put energy into stuff that they can’t control, and I always tell him those are things you can’t control,” Smith said. “You just have to be able to let it roll off your back like sweat at practice.

You can’t really worry about the comments of others.”

Howard recently began a campaign called “Breathe Again” through his D12 Foundation, which he describes as a social movement to “breathe new life and hope for our future.” He’s focused on spreading his message to as many people as possible and often visits with youth about the project.

“Basketball doesn’t last forever and I would rather be a legend for things I have done away from the game which will most likely surpass whatever I’ve done on the basketball court,” he said. “A greater legacy for me is seeing multitudes of people learn and grow and live longer than what they were expected because their lives were changed.”

Howard, whose father was a police officer, hopes this movement can be a positive alternative to the rioting and other violence that have followed recent police shootings. He’s long wanted to do something like this but the image some people had of him kept him from launching it until this year.

“I’ve built the courage to really just do it instead of worrying about what people are saying or the outcome,” he said. “Just say you know what: ‘This is on my heart and I’m just going to go with it.’ There are going to be people who don’t like it or don’t agree with it, but this is what I feel.”

Howard’s found his peace on a Rockets team that finished the regular season second in the Western Conference despite his missing half of the team’s games with injuries. He returned late in the regular season and amped things up in the first round of the playoffs to help Houston eliminate the Dallas Mavericks in five games.

Howard’s averaging 17.5 points, 13.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks a game in a postseason where many believe he’s looking better than he has in years.

“There were a lot of times where I thought we had baskets and then Superman showed up,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said of Howard’s work in L.A.’s win Monday night. “I’ve not seen him this athletic since the Orlando years. Powerful, athletic — yeah he has it back for sure.”

Tubby Smith overcame obstacles, should be coach of year

C

onsidering its roster had seven new players, including five freshmen, and a key player injured during the 2014-2015 season, the Texas Tech men’s basketball team didn’t have as dismal of a season as some may think.

Following a disappointing 20132014 season, in which the team ended with a 14-18 overall record and 6-12 Big 12 Conference record, former Tech players Jordan Tolbert and Dusty Hannahs declared their intent to transfer.

Despite the lack of veteran players and team chemistry that comes with playing together for a long time, the team managed to pull out a few key victories, especially a win over thenNo. 9 Iowa State, and many losses were close, not 30-point blowouts.

The only reason the Red Raiders had any semblance of a competitive Big 12 team was because of head coach Tubby Smith.

In just his second year coaching the Red Raiders, Smith had an extremely impressive recruiting run for the 2014-2015 season. His biggest recruiting achievements were the additions of Tampa Berkeley Prep guard Justin Gray and Plano East forward Zach Smith, both three-star recruits.

As luck would have it, Gray was injured fairly early in the season, and then had season-ending surgery.

Tubby Smith is an experienced coach who has led a team to a national championship. He has a strategy that will work, but he cannot be blamed for the injuries and transfers plaguing his team.

Considering the hand he has been dealt, Smith has done better than just about any other coach could have given his position.

Hannah Hipp Tech had almost an entirely new team and still beat ranked teams, and though the win-loss record doesn’t show it, they were competitors in the Big 12 this year, not the team for opponents to check off as an easy win.

The past two years since Smith has taken over, the team has played with an intensity I haven’t seen since the Bob Knight era. They are fun and exciting to watch, and have provided me with more nail biting and anxiety than I’ve felt from the Tech basketball team in years.

Smith commands the sidelines with authority, and it is clear the players respect him. They are young, but for being mostly freshmen they have discipline uncharacteristic of such a young group, and the credit should go to Smith.

He doesn’t put up with any nonsense, as even earlier this year, junior forward Justin Jamison was kicked off the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules, according to a previous article in The Daily Toreador, a.k.a. not following Smith’s expectations for the team, and Smith clearly wanted none of it, regardless of how valuable Jamison may have been.

Smith has a winning formula.

What he needs are players who buy in to his strategy and don’t transfer after one “disappointing” year.

Guard Randy Onwuasor has already declared his intent to transfer after this season, and it wouldn’t surprise

me if others follow suit.

Should the rest of the team stay, however, Red Raiders should be beyond excited for next year.

Give Smith freshmen and some time, and the Red Raiders can be competitors and winners. Look at what he’s done already with next to
