Out of the box memory tricks to help with finals

Some things the human brain can do might surprise the average person, but by harnessing these mental quirks, students can study for finals more efficiently and better ensure they will remember the information they looked over the night before.

According to About Psychology, these triggers include senses like smell, taste and listening.

Tyler Davis, assistant professor of Psychology at Texas Tech, said not only can students use each individual sense to help increase their memorization, but each new sense is used as well continues to increase memory.

“Our hippocampus,” he said,

“the primary brain region associated with building long term memories, brings together information from all of our sensory modalities to form a representation of the context in which we experience an event or first learn a new fact.”

The olfactory nerve, responsible for smells, is located close to the amygdala, the part of the brain that is connected to emotions, and the hippocampus, the part of the brain associated wi th m e m ory, a c c ordi n g to About Psychology.

The ability to smell, according to About Psychology, is highly linked to memory and studying information in the presence of a specific odor will increase the likelihood the information studied will be recalled when the

smell is present again.

To access this process, according to About Psychology, smell a distinctive perfume or odor while studying for a test, then before entering the test, smell the odor again. The repetition will trigger the brain’s memory of the information.

“These contextual clues like smell do exert a powerful effect.

There was a famous study,” Davis said, “with royal navy divers that showed that divers who studied a word list underwater were better at remembering this list underwater than on land. The opposite was true for those who studied on land first.”

According to the British Physiological Society, taste, more specifically chewing gum, has a similar effect.

Chewing one flavor while studying, then popping it in before the test, will help trigger the information studied the night before just like the common smell, according to the society.

“Any smells or tastes that are stored in the brain during the forming of new memories can be used as a cue to help trigger retrieval of the full memory,” Davis said.

Not only does the flavor of chewing gum help trigger memories of information studied, it also helps increase focus and brain activity, according to the society.

Kate Morgan, author of the study from the British Physiological Society, said, according to the society, “It’s been well established by previous research that chewing gum benefits some

area of cognition. In our study, participants who didn’t chew gum performed slightly better at the beginning of the task but were overtaken by the end. This suggests that chewing gum helps us focus on tasks that require continuous monitoring over a longer amount of time.”

Finally, according to a study done by researchers at the University of Wales, listening to classical music provides shortterm enhancement of mental tasks, something called the “Mozart Effect.”

This effect only works with music without lyrics, according to the study, because it increases “spatial-temporal reasoning,” or the ability to visualize patterns and manipulate them, something that plays a large role in memo-

rization and studying.

Using any or all of these “brain-hacks” will help when studying for finals, he said, but there are other ways to work with your brain that focuses directly on the material being covered as well.

“The more cues that overlap with when you learned a fact, the better your memory should be,” Davis said. “Research also suggests that if you can test yourself in a manner consistent with the future testing, it will be better than spending an equivalent amount of time just reading.”

He said there are several different ways, like these, to maximize study time and get the most out of days leading up to finals to make sure to ace those tests. ➤➤kbain@dailytoreador.com

Hayhoe participates in climate assessment GOP’s lead on Benghazi Katharine Hayhoe, director of the Texas Tech Climate Science Center and one of the 2014 TIME 100 most influential people in the world, was one of 300 authors to contribute to the Third National Climate Assessment (NCA3), released Tuesday.

Hayhoe served as one of the lead authors on this report, according to a Tech news release.

The report has 30 chapters, two appendices and covers topics such as forestry, agriculture and human health, according to the release. The study, according to the release, is the most compre-

hensive plain-language summary of what climate change means for the United States currently.

The result the researchers found confirms climate change affects every region in the U.S., primarily in the economy and society.

The way to combat these threats, according to the release, is to increase preparedness and resilience of Americans.

“Climate change is no longer a future issue,” Hayhoe said, according to the release. “We are experiencing its impacts today.

and shifts in precipitation patterns will constrain development, stress our natural resources and increase competition for water among communities, agriculture, energy production and ecological needs. For the U.S. as a whole, climate change will affect our lives through its impacts on our health, our water resources, our food, our natural environment and our economy” Hayhoe was the lead author specifically for the climate science chapter, the climate science appendix and the commonly asked questions appendix,

according to the release.

The project is sponsored by the United States Global Change Research Program, and 13 other federal departments, and agencies and is overseen by a federal advisory committee composed of 60 different members, according to the release.

“This report is intended to start conversations around the country about how we can best adapt to coming changes and what we might do to mitigate th e worst of th e im p a c t s , ” Hayhoe said. ➤➤kbain@dailytoreador.com

Former mortician in Texas slaying case set free Tuesday CARTHAGE (AP) — A former mortician whose killing of a rich widow shook an East Texas town and later inspired a movie is a free man after a judge agreed to reduce his life sentence and release him on bond.

Bernie Tiede’s freedom Tuesday was part of an agreement with the same district attorney who prosecuted him for the death of his 81-yearold longtime companion, Marjorie Nugent, who disappeared in 1996 and was found dead in a freezer in Carthage nine months later.

Tiede’s bond was set at $10,000 and after posting bail, he was released to go live in Austin with filmmaker Richard Linklater, who co-wrote and directed the 2011 dark comedy “Bernie” that was inspired by the case and starred Jack Black in the title role and Shirley MacLaine as Nugent. Linklater volunteered to

take in Tiede, who will be under strict bond conditions.

A state criminal appeals court still must formally sign off on the sentence reduction.

The now-55-year-old Tiede, who was well liked in the close-knit community of Carthage, was convicted in 1999 in the death of Nugent, who had a reputation among townspeople as a crotchety cheapskate.

Panola County District Attorney Danny Buck Davidson agreed with Tiede’s appeals attorney, Jodi Cole, who said he deserved a lighter sentence because he was sexually assaulted as a child and also had an abusive relationship with Nugent before her death.

Psychiatrist Edward Gripon, who examined Tiede in January, testified Tuesday that Tiede and Nugent had a complex and abusive relationship. He

said that combined with Tiede having been abused when he was younger pushed him to kill Nugent in a “brief dissociative episode.”

“He doesn’t come across in examination at all as a person prone to violence,” he said. “That set of circumstances ... is not going to recreate itself.”

Nugent’s granddaughter, Dallasarea lawyer Shanna Nugent, said her family “is pretty much in shock” over the development.

“I really wanted justice for Nanny,” she said, using a pet name for her grandmother. “This doesn’t really feel like justice.”

Davidson, who said he believes residents’ opinion of Tiede has changed “180 degrees,” called Tiede’s release “bittersweet.” He said he had a duty, however, to act once it was clear other factors had led Tiede to kill.

Tiede still faces a theft charge for spending Nugent’s money after her death, but Davidson said nothing will move forward on that until the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals approves the sentence reduction in the slaying case. No timetable has been set for when the court might act.

Nugent’s corpse was found at her Carthage home nine months after her 1996 disappearance, wrapped in a sheet inside a freezer among packages of frozen corn, pecans and meat. She had been shot in the back four times with a .22-caliber rifle.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Trey Gowdy, the Republicans’ newest point man on the Benghazi attack, is a seasoned prosecutor determined to apply his well-honed courtroom skills to an electionyear examination of the Obama administration’s actions.

Tapped by House Speaker John Boehner, the two-term South Carolina congressman will lead a special select committee investigating the chaotic night of Sept. 11, 2012, when extremists attacked the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Libya, killing Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Multiple independent and bipartisan investigations have faulted the State Department for inadequate security at the mission and the military’s lack of assets in the region. Yet the inquiries have failed to quiet the much-publicized aftermath, with Republicans vehemently insisting that the administration sought to downplay a terror attack just weeks before the presidential election.

Two years later, Benghazi resonates with Republicans, who demand accountability from Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other administration officials. It remains a rallying cry with conservatives whose votes are crucial to the GOP in November’s historically lowturnout midterm elections.

Republicans are expected to force a vote Thursday to establish the select committee despite Democratic objections that it’s unnecessary. It remains to be seen whether Democrats decide to boycott the panel.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and whip Steny Hoyer sent Boehner a letter accusing House Republicans of “extreme and counter-productive partisanship” in the investigation. They say “a fundamentally different approach” is needed for a select committee, including equal representation on the committee.

“There will be people critical of the process and the results no matter what,” Gowdy said in an interview. “That’s not the jury. That is not the audience. The jury is reasonable-minded, open-minded people who say, ‘Show me a fair process, let me draw my conclusions and let’s finally, in the words of the speaker, get to the bottom of what happened in Benghazi.’”

Gowdy, 49, is a hard-charging conservative who has challenged the administration on the botched “Fast and Furious” gun-smuggling operation and the Internal Revenue Service’s scrutiny of tea party groups’ applications for tax-exempt status. He won wide acclaim from the right for his impassioned, fiveminute House floor speech last month on ensuring that the president enforces the nation’s laws.

“The House of Representatives does not exist to pass suggestions.

We do not exist to pass ideas,” Gowdy said to applause and cheers.

“We make law.”

Raids target synthetic drugs, sellers across US

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Drug Enforcement Administration on Wednesday broadened its national crackdown on synthetic drug manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers as federal agents served hundreds of search and arrest warrants in at least 25 states.

Agents served warrants at homes, warehouses and smoke shops beginning early morning, DEA spokesman Rusty Payne said.

The largest single operation was a statewide effort in Alabama. Agents also were active in Florida, New

Organization earns high award Freeport-McMoRan selling assets Texas Tech’s chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society was awarded Gold standing for the 2012-2013 academic year.

This designation was reached by collaborating with other student organizations, participating in and planning service projects, implementing new member events and networking with Golden Key honorary members and alumni, according to a Tech news release.

Less than 25 percent of all chapters reach this standing, according to the release.

Golden Key is the world’s largest society, according to the release, and has more than 2 million members and 400 chapters worldwide.

The mission, according to the

Golden Key website, is to “unlock the potential of each member by upholding standards of excellence on campus and beyond.”

Janet Veal, one of the chapter’s advisors, said she and Heather Medley, the other chapter advisor, have already made plans to grow membership and increase leadership opportunities at the Tech chapter.

PHOENIX (AP) — FreeportMcMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. is selling its Eagle Ford Shale assets in Texas for $3.1 billion as it looks to lower its debt.

The buyer is a subsidiary of Encana Corp., a Canadian oil and natural gas company.

Freeport has been working on selling about $4 billion of its energy assets to help reduce debt and allow it to concentrate more on growth areas like the Gulf of Mexico. It anticipates getting net proceeds of about $2.5 billion from the latest deal.

The Phoenix-based copper and gold mining company said Wednesday that it expects to use approximately half the proceeds to repay outstanding debt. It foresees using the remainder of the proceeds to invest in assets in the Gulf of Mexico.

Putin: Troops have pulled back from Ukraine’s border MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has pulled back its troops from the Ukrainian border, Vladimir Putin told diplomats Wednesday as he urged insurgents in southeastern Ukraine to postpone their planned referendum Sunday on autonomy.

But the U.S. military said it had seen no sign of a Russian troop pullback.

“We’ve seen no change in the Russian force posture along the Ukrainian border,” said a Pentagon spokesman, U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren. Without commenting on how the U.S. is monitoring activity along the border, Warren said “we

would know” if Russian troops were on the move.

In a Moscow meeting with Swiss president Didier Burkhalter, Putin said the Russian troops have been pulled back to their training grounds and locations for “regular exercises,” but didn’t specify whether those locations were in areas near Ukraine. A Defense Ministry spokesman declined to say where the troops were now positioned.

Putin also called on Ukraine’s military to halt all operations against pro-Russia activists who have seized government buildings and police stations in at least a

Hance appeared via satellite telecast, and discussed his letter to Condoleezza Rice about her withdrawal from the Rutgers University commencement ceremonies.

Encana has recently cut jobs, slashed its dividend and closed an office in a bid to become more efficient. It also plans to spin off a portion of its Alberta assets into a new public company.

The Eagle Ford Shale assets include all of Freeport-McMoRan’s interests on approximately 45,500 net acres with estimated net proved reserves totaling 59 million barrels of oil equivalents and estimated net proved and probable reserves of 69 million BOE at the end of 2013. Production from the field averaged 53,000 BOE per day in 2014’s first quarter.

The deal is targeted to close by the second quarter’s end.

As an undergrad student and hope-to-be graduate student in the masters of science in accounting program, I think every day about what can be done at Tech to retain our graduate student population and recruit more students every day. One thing I know can be beneficial to encourage our graduate students is a transition to a dead week rather than a dead day.

T e x a s A&M and the University of Te x a s , b o t h AAU member schools, have a five day dead week. We need to stay on the competitive edge here at Te c h a n d i f there is one reason we should move toward a dead week, it is for graduate students.

While it is nice to have a day that no organization meets, no classes are held and no student has any type of obligation on campus, the truth is one day is simply not enough. When I meet graduate students who are preparing for exams, they seem stressed out about finals weeks before they even begin.

Realistically, I know not every student takes advantage of dead day right now. I have seen my fellow Red Raiders talk about or post on social media everything they will be doing besides studying. However, I do know there is a large enough need for a dead week. Even if a majority of students won’t take advantage of four or five consecutive days to sit down, concentrate and study, we should all feel obligated to those who actually will.

s finals begin for the spring semester, it is safe to say many people are scrambling to study and trying to cram as much as possible. It might seem as if there isn’t enough time. As finals do approach, the argument of dead day versus dead week comes up.

While the idea of dead week seems wonderful, the basic truth is that it isn’t practical for both school policy and social reasons.

First off, according to the Texas Tech website, the academic calendar is set all the way through the second summer term of 2018. The breaks, intercessions and exam dates have already been planned. Any attempt to change this to add in a dead week within the next four years would affect the calendar and would require a whole new one. Dead day is already planned into each semester and allows for planning without problems.

In addition to the already planned out academic year, the act of changing dead day to dead week is incredibly difficult.

According to the Tech Office of Publications, any change to the calendar can take up to six months to be approved. That means in the best-case scenario, dead week would not take effect until the spring or fall semester of 2018 if it were to pass before fall of 2015.

Even if dead week were to become an option, there would be costs to gaining that week.

ficial Publications here at Tech, I realized just how tedious the job of organizing an academic calendar can be. There are very clear guidelines, standards, rules and obligations that must be followed closely while making the Tech calendar. If you thought it’d be easy to organize a calendar for a university, think again.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is the state government organization that regulates dates for public institutions and is the organization McKinnon and his team must pay close attention to at all times.

The THECP monitors the first day of class and sets standards as to how many instructional hours each student receives. Just these two factors alone make it almost impossible for any wiggle room in the Tech calendar.

The bottom line is that it is not possible to transition toward a dead week in the next couple of years, more specifically, before 2018. However, I do not take “no” as an answer very easily, and neither should Tech. A dead week is something that should be highly considered in the near future. Even though I am a first-year sophomore and I may never see a dead week during my time at Tech, we could begin to start a conversation around the university that could lead to an implementation of a dead week.

This is my first year in college and I won’t be graduating for some time — May 2019 to be exact. I have many dead days ahead of me. However, I hope maybe I could see those dead days turn into dead weeks. I hope this is an issue that gains traction so future generations of Red Raiders will be able to benefit from something we began caring about now.

dead week, or classes would run later, which would affect summer class schedules.

Aside from the Tech policies that play a factor as to why the campus already has dead day as opposed to dead week, there is also the studying aspect that plays a factor. Dead day is more beneficial to studying because it does not allow room for slacking off. There is a quick break that allows for resting while the information reviewed on the last couple of days in class is still fresh in a student’s mind.

Allowing a week from the time classes reviewed and when finals begin can cause the material learned to be forgotten. The more time there is between studying and a test, the hazier the material might become if a student does not utilize the study time given.

While the extra time of dead week might allow the more selfdisciplined students to study, chances are the majority would use this time to relax and slack off until the last few days. This would still leave the cramming problem that students feel with dead day, leaving that problem unsolved.

The extra time would also lead to more opportunities to party instead of study. Certain bars already have dead day specials, so imagine the amount of potential parties if there was an entire week to goof off. An

entire week doesn’t solve the lack of time to study for finals; it enables it.

With all the different reasons as to why dead day is better than dead week, the most obvious one is college students ought to know how to manage their time wisely. According to a USA Today blog, the author, Dan Reimold, believes students ought to take the initiative and study while they can.

Students at a collegiate level don’t need to be babied and given extra time due to the fact that in the real world, the s a m e o p p o rtunity is not always given.

Exams are not always piled on one day, so if a student has finals at the end of finals week, in a way they are still technically getting a week to study.

With everything said, dead day is more beneficial to the study habits of a student than dead week. The calendar for Tech is already set through 2018 and the effort it takes to make changes is not worth the effort for an extra few days to slack off before finals.

Many students lack the selfdiscipline to efficiently utilize dead week and would more than likely use that time to procrastinate. Dead day offers a small break before finals so the material is still fresh and students can quickly take their finals and go home.

hat do the Burkhart Center for Autism, the Experimental Sciences Building, the Graduate Underground Center and the Wind Research Facility have in common? They’re all just some of the very new additions to Texas Tech in hopes of moving us toward a membership in the Association of American Universities.

AAU is an elite organization comprised of 60 Universities in the United States that excel academically and are known world wide for research and development. The only problem with becoming a member of the AAU is there are always only 60 schools, 30 private and 30 public, meaning if one school is asked to join, another is kicked out.

Schools such as Harvard, Princeton, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Duke and Michigan State are just some of the AAU member schools and they boast proudly of their membership.

The truth is Tech is realistically not far away from an invitation into the AAU. While this might seem like something that doesn’t concern every Tom, Dick or Harry at Tech, an AAU invitation for Tech would make the value of every degree exponentially more valuable.

The university is making leaps and bounds toward research, which is a major factor in AAU accreditation. In fact, according to the Tech Office of Communication and Marketing, graduate research has increased by 104 percent in the last four years alone. Smartphones can be great tools, but we all need to start paying attention to the people around us and be in the moment instead of being obsessively concerned about what is happening on our phones.

I will be the first to admit that I am one of those people that needs a time-out from my smartphone every now and then. It’s easy to get caught up in tweets, texts, Buzzfeed articles and Flappy Bird, but I think it’s high time for a wake up call.

How many times have you been at the dinner table and everyone you are with is silently checking their phone? Beside being incredibly rude, you’re missing a golden opportunity to catch up with the people you are having dinner with. At my parents’ house, it’s an unspoken rule that we never have our phones out at the dinner table.

It’s always been understood that dinner is the time to talk to each other and have quality family time.

From what I have observed during my three years at K-State, students generally aren’t bothered by someone casually checking their phone at a meal – but they should be bothered. you ever been in the middle of a story and you realize the person you are trying to talk to is more interested in their game of “2048 than in what you have to say?

Yeah, it’s annoying. Then, once they finally realize you’re talking to them, you have to start the story all over.

A good friend of mine once told me a story about going out to dinner with a group of friends she hadn’t seen in a long time.

They made a rule that everyone had to put their phone in the middle of the table, face down.

The first person to check their phone had to pay for everyone’s meal. It may seem harsh, but it worked! They had a great time catching up on the past and making new memories together without Instagramming their food or checking-in on Four Square.

The classroom is another place where smartphones need to be put away. When you are in class, be in class. You have one chance to listen to the lecture, get the notes firsthand and ask questions. If you could bump up your grade from a B to an A just by putting down the smartphone and listening, why not make that easy change? Plus, once again, it’s rude to be on your phone while your professor is taking the time to help you learn about your future career. It should be obvious that being on your phone during a meeting, interview, date or class is bad etiquette, but what about hanging out with friends and family? If all someone is doing is watching television, it might not be a bad time to reply to texts and check social media.

However, if you’re with your 3-year-old niece, she shouldn’t have to wait on you to get off the phone before you’ll play dress up with her.

Life may be short, but it is filled with precious moments.

I’ve seen all of my siblings get married, and was with my brother on the day of both his daughters’ births. Of course I tweeted, Facebooked and texted my entire list of contacts the news, but I did so at an appropriate time.

My point is, there is a time and a place to be on your smartphone. If we all took the time to be in the moment and enjoy our loved loves, we’ll get so much more out of life. Though the world we live in relies on technology, that doesn’t mean we have to use be plugged in 24/7. all columns, the authors of those selected for publication will be notified. Students, don’t give up on home stretch

I

t feels like every angle I look in, something from another class is being thrown at me. I have to get this done by this time, but oh wait, I also have three tests to take care of by the same time.

With finals coming up, it feels like the end is near and I’m treading gallons of water just to get there. I’m almost to the point where I want to throw all of my papers up in the air and tell finals they win, I give up.

Taylor Peace But I know I need to keep going. I can’t give in just yet because I know in one week I will be out of here with no obligations and no worries at all. I just need to get there.

Until then, I have to keep pushing myself. I have to keep telling myself just

take it one day at a time, and by this time next week, I will be free.

As each day comes with one more test or one more presentation, I am going to take it and run with it in full stride. Although the going is getting pretty tough, and everyone seems to panic around this time of year, all I know to do is to just breath and relax — I got this.

Every time finals come around, this sense of panic comes over me and I feel overwhelmed to the point where I want to cry, but I know it will be over sooner than I imagine.

So here is my advice: embrace this last

week of school. Although students are going to have so many things to take care of, we do get a break from classes. That’s a definite plus.

Also, it is the last test, which means no more classes or tests ever for that horrible class you have dreadfully sat through day in and day out all year.

Another thing is to actually study.

Take a couple breaks and treat yourself to whatever your vice is; food, coffee, chocolate or whatever you’re into. Give yourself a pat on the back for working this hard and getting this far. I know your parents would be proud, so you should too.

German art collector Gurlitt dies at 81 BERLIN (AP) — Cornelius Gurlitt’s long-secret hoard of 1,280 major artworks set off an international uproar last year over the fate of art looted by the Nazis.

Now his death has triggered a new round of speculation over who will eventually own his unparalleled collection.

A spokesman for the reclusive German collector, who died Tuesday at age 81 at his apartment in Munich, said Gurlitt had living relatives but he would not say who they are.

It was also not immediately clear whether Gurlitt had written a will or whether a Munich court would appoint a curator of estate, which is often done in Germany if there are open questions surrounding an inheritance.

After much back and forth, Gurlitt eventually agreed last month to a deal with the German government under which hundreds of works he owned would be checked for possible Nazi-era pasts while staying in government hands. A spokeswoman for the Bavarian Justice Ministry told The Associated Press on Tuesday that deal would be binding on all possible heirs.

Initially, Gurlitt had insisted that all of the art work belonged to him and nobody else.

“Everybody involved — the authorities as well as private people who think some of the art

may have once belonged to their families — wants to know more than anything what’s going to happen to the collection,” said Markus Stoetzel, a German lawyer specializing on the restitution of Nazi-looted art.

“The only thing we know for sure at this point is that the painful process of recovering art taken under Nazi terror will be further delayed,” he added.

Gurlitt was thrust into the public spotlight in November when authorities, following a report by German magazine Focus, disclosed that they had seized 1,280 works by artists including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall from his Munich apartment more than a year earlier.

They had discovered the works while investigating Gurlitt for suspected import tax evasion.

Some of the pieces — by Matisse, Chagall and Otto Dix — were previously unknown, not listed in the detailed inventories compiled by art scholars.

Gurlitt had inherited the collection of paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures from his father, Hildebrand Gurlitt, an art dealer who traded in works confiscated by the Nazis and who died in 1956.

German authorities, facing criticism from Jewish groups and art experts for keeping the hoard secret for so long, quickly moved to publicize details of paintings

online and put together a task force to speed their identification.

They said at least 458 of the works may have been stolen from their owners by the Nazis.

Separately, representatives for Gurlitt later secured a further 238 artworks that were at a dilapidated house he owned in Salzburg, Austria. Gurlitt was never under investigation in Austria and those works weren’t seized by authorities. It is not clear where those artworks are now.

Gurlitt stayed out of sight after news of his collection broke, barely talking to media, and was apparently overwhelmed by the publicity. In January, his representatives said they were considering Jewish families’ claims for some of the works and said he was seeking “fair and just solutions” to the case.

“So much has happened in the past weeks and months, and is still happening,” Gurlitt wrote on a newly created website shortly afterward. “I only wanted to live with my pictures, in peace and calm.”

Gurlitt had undergone major heart surgery recently and returned to his home in Munich, where he had hoarded his art for several decades. He was “in nursing care and taken care of in recent weeks around the clock,” his spokesman Stephan Holzinger said as he announced the death.

Do not give up. Keep going and finish this semester strong. That way you aren’t sitting around, biting your nails and worrying about what grade you will get in a certain class or if you will have to take it all over again.

The best thing any student can do is to take each day one step at a time, or in our case, one final at a time. Run at the hardest tests with full speed and I guarantee you’ll come out on top. Sacrifice that one night of going out with friends in order to study that extra hour. Walk into that classroom knowing you are about to murder that final and there is no holding you back.

Once the final is over, we can throw our pens out and walk outside like it’s a brand new day. That heavy chest feeling and panicking heart racing will end and it will finally be summer time.

Yes, we will feel like we can actually breathe again. But until then, we just have to keep going and pushing ourselves until we reach the finish line. We’re all in this together so we can’t give up — not just yet.

McMurtry reimagines gunfight at the OK Corral “The Last Kind Words Saloon” (Liveright Publishing Corp.), by Larry McMurtry Larry McMurtry, descendant of Texas cattlemen, can’t stop writing stories about the American West. His latest novel, “The Last Kind Words Saloon,” reimagines the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, an event he brought to life more vividly in his 2006 novel, “Telegraph Days.”

In this version, itinerant lawman Wyatt Earp and his pal Doc Holliday, the dentist turned gambler/gunslinger, are in the frontier town of Long Grass, Texas, where Wyatt’s wife, Jessie, tends bar at the Last Kind Words Saloon.

A big cattle deal is going down between an English baron and Charles Goodnight, a reallife Texas Panhandle cattleman whom McMurtry has written about before. Historical figures like Buffalo Bill Cody and the Kiowa warriors Satank and Satanta drift in and out of the ac-

tion, as do fictional characters from McMurtry’s earlier works, including Nellie Courtright, the lusty frontier journalist/narrator of “Telegraph Days.”

Inevitably, Wyatt and Doc make their way to Tombstone, Arizona, where Wyatt reunites with his lawmen brothers Virgil and Morgan and begins feuding with the Clanton gang. The climactic events of Oct. 26, 1881, unfold in a few sentences, ending on an odd note of marital discord between Jessie and Wyatt.

McMurtry clearly isn’t interested in burnishing the Wyatt Earp legend — he’s portrayed as a surly, shiftless wife beater — but he doesn’t offer much of a counter history either. The novel — he calls it “a ballad in prose whose characters are afloat in time” — ends with an epilogue narrated

by Nellie, a sort of alter ego for McMurtry, both of whom have made good money in Hollywood writing about the West.

Tech experts give study tips for final exams

The last studying push for final exams is beginning for Texas Tech students.

However, studying can be a much more daunting task than many would expect.

“Many students underestimate the amount of time they need to spend studying,” Matthew Gamble, a residential tutor, said.

It is important for students to have a set study schedule, the sophomore mechanical engineering major from Dallas, said, or at least have a plan for the amount of time they want to spend studying.

Otherwise, Gamble said, they will run out of time and be forced

to cram.

“Cramming is one of the worst ways to study,” he said. “The studying needs to be spaced out with breaks in between.”

It is also important for students to be realistic with their goals for their final exams, Gamble said.

If a student has a 75 in a class, he said, they should not plan on making a 98 on the final and an A in the class.

“Although possible, it is highly unlikely,” Gamble said. “If students keep their goals realistic and simply try to do their best, they will have a much better chance at succeeding.”

One of the worst things students can do, Rodriguez said, is to stay up all night the day before the exam.

“I think there’s a lot of value in a good night’s sleep,” she said, “and at some point you have to just rely on the fact that you know the information, you’ve been in class and you’re prepared.”

Students need to take advantage of any and all final exam reviews for their classes, Rodriguez said.

The professors will come up with topics they think the students should know about, she said, and cover information that they know will be on the exams.

“You’d be crazy not to come and participate,” Rodriguez said.

“Just listening to what we’re talking about makes a difference.”

Study groups can also be effective, Rodriguez said, because some students will remember things others might have forgotten.

The most important thing, she said, is that students take breaks and do not overwork their brains.

“Go to a movie or out to dinner, or anything that will get your mind off studying,” she said.

“When people are too focused on cramming in all of the information, they don’t retain the information, and won’t perform as well on the exams as they would want to.” ➤➤hhipp@dailytoreador.com

Damascus opera suffers DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Just as Leen Arbid entered the front gate of the Damascus Opera House, a potent symbol of the Assad family’s decades-long authoritarian rule over Syria, she heard a deafening bang. And then, everything went black.

The drama student was going to her classes that bright Sunday morning when a mortar shell fired from rebel positions on the outskirts of the Syrian capital struck the pavement inside the complex yard, next to an entrance door used by performers.

“Suddenly at 8:15, a mortar hit five meters (yards) from me,” the petite 24-year-old with chestnut eyes said. “I was injured and fell to the ground unconscious, bleeding. I didn’t feel any pain.”

Flying shrapnel from the shell pierced into her right leg. Five other of her classmates were also wounded, and two others died in the explosion, which shattered windows on the building and broke glass on a board that advertised a Chopin piano concert that was to be held that day, April 6.

Mortar attacks have become daily occurrence in the Syrian capital of some two million, often killing more people than this attack. But the strike last month

against the opera house resonated much more loudly through the Damascus community. It was a direct hit against the Assad family’s cherished creation.

Hafez Assad, who ruled Syria for three decades with an iron fist, was only a few years in power in 1970 when he laid the foundation stone of the Assad House for Culture and Arts.

Hard economic times and the outbreak of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war stalled construction. The opera was scheduled to open in 1999, but was again delayed by an electrical fire that gutted the main hall.

After Hafez Assad’s death in 2000, it fell on his son and successor, Bashar, to finish the job. In 2004, he opened the opera house with his British-born wife, Asma, amid great fanfare and fireworks.

The sprawling complex includes a large opera hall, two smaller theaters and acting, singing and ballet schools, offering classical concerts and works

by Arab playwrights. Built with a mix of Western and Arab architecture and decorated with paintings and sculptures

by Syrian artists, it expresses the Assad family’s vision of Damascus as the Arab capital of culture and politics, with them at the helm as visionaries and reformers.

Monica Lewinsky speaks out on affair with Clinton Swiss museum named ‘sole heir’ in Gurlitt’s will WA S H I N G T O N ( A P ) — Monica Lewinsky says there’s no question her boss — Bill Clinton — “took advantage” of her when he was president.

But she says their affair was consensual and if there was any abuse involved, it came afterward, when Clinton’s inner circle tried to discredit her and the president’s opponents used her as a political pawn.

The former White House intern, now 40, writes about her life in the next issue of Vanity Fair magazine, out this month. In released excerpts, she says she’s perhaps the first Internet era scapegoat and wants to speak out on behalf of other victims of online humiliation.

Her willingness to step forward may come at an inopportune time as former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton considers running for president. Republicans have signaled

they don’t consider her husband’s scandal from the late 1990s out of bounds in the realm of 2016-style political dialogue.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a likely GOP presidential contender, answered criticisms of the Republican record on women’s issues by saying in January that the last Democratic president engaged in “predatory behavior” with a woman, Lewinsky, who was 22 when her liaisons with Clinton began in 1995. Clinton’s lies about the relationship contributed to his impeachment by the House in 1998; the Senate acquitted him.

Lewinsky writes that she deeply regrets the affair and made a point of staying silent through several presidential campaigns to avoid becoming a distraction. Now, she writes, it’s time to stop “tiptoeing around my past — and other people’s futures. I am determined to have a

different ending to my story. I’ve decided, finally, to stick my head above the parapet.”

Invoking her headwear from endlessly repeated TV clips and the stained garment considered as evidence against Clinton, she writes: “It’s time to burn the beret and bury the blue dress.”

But these aren’t her first public words on the scandal. Lewinsky broke her silence in 1999 with a blockbuster interview with Barbara Walters, gave several subsequent interviews and cooperated with author Andrew Morton on his book the same year, entitled “Monica’s Story.”

“Sure, my boss took advantage of me,” she writes now, “but I will always remain firm on this point: it was a consensual relationship. Any ‘abuse’ came in the aftermath, when I was made a scapegoat in order to protect his powerful position.”

BERLIN (AP) — A museum in Switzerland said Wednesday that it has been named the “unrestricted and unfettered sole heir” of a German art collector whose priceless hoard of long-hidden artworks last year set off an uproar over the fate of art looted by the Nazis.

The Kunstmuseum Bern, in the Swiss capital, said it was “surprised and delighted” at the appointment, of which it was informed

by Cornelius Gurlitt’s lawyer, Christoph Edel.

“At the same time, (we) do not wish to conceal the fact that this magnificent bequest brings with it a considerable burden of responsibility and a wealth of questions of the most difficult and sensitive kind, and questions in particular of a legal and ethical nature,” it said in a statement.

The museum said that the news

“came like a bolt from the blue” as it had never previously had any dealings with Gurlitt, who died age 81 on Tuesday.

Edel’s office declined to comment. It referred questions to Gurlitt’s spokesman, Stephan Holzinger, who said his client summoned a notary early this year before he underwent heart surgery, with his lawyer also present, but that it was up to the Munich district court to determine whether there is a valid will.

The court said it hasn’t yet received the will, but that if it is found to be valid a foreign heir has six months to decide whether or not to accept the bequest.

German investigators seized more than 1,000 artworks from Gurlitt’s Munich apartment two years ago after chancing upon the trove of paintings, print

and drawings by masters such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall.

Gurlitt initially insisted that he had rightfully inherited all of the works from his father, Hildebrand Gurlitt, who at one point had acted as an art dealer for the Nazis.

But after months of legal wrangling, Gurlitt agreed in April to a deal with the German government under which experts would check whether any of the works he owned were looted by the Nazis — leading to possible restitution claims — while they remained in authorities’ custody. All works cleared of suspicion would be returned to Gurlitt.

The Bavarian Justice Ministry said Tuesday that the deal would be binding on all possible heirs.

The return of the released pictures to Gurlitt hadn’t started at the time of his death, Holzinger said.

With finals approaching, many students can start to stress about studying for their tests.

McKenzie Hopson, a junior public relations major from Gatesville and the special programs coordinator for the Tech Activities Board, said TAB hosted a Rest and Relaxation Night on Tuesday in the Student Union building.

“Rest and Relaxation Night is an event we do every semester,” she said. “We did it a little different this year than we have in the past. It’s a night where students can get food and free

scantrons and blue books. We go through the Rec to bring in massage ladies to come and give five minute massages.”

During times of stress, it is important to get enough sleep, according to the Everyday Health website, and not getting enough sleep can increase stress levels.

It is also important for students not to overload their schedule, according to the website, and students should not feel guilty about dropping unnecessary activities if they need to.

“As a student, I know there are times where you can’t keep staring at the same piece of paper anymore,” Hopson said. “Your

Taking a break from stressful activities can be as simple as breathing, according to the Everyday Health website, and deep breathing exercises can help relieve tension.

When she needs a break from studying, Hopson said she usually watches Netflix for long periods of time.

“My biggest thing is acting like a child about it sometimes,” she said. “I’ll study for awhile and get overwhelmed, and then my friends and I will decide to color.

We’ll also go outside and kick a soccer ball. I basically figure out

whatever is the direct opposite of studying at that moment and do that.”

Physical exercise also relieves stress, according to the Everyday Health website, and getting 20 minutes of exercise every day is beneficial no matter what type of exercise it is.

Spencer Godard, a senior exercise and sport sciences major from Weatherford, works at the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center and said exercise is beneficial in many aspects.

“Exercise is a good way to counteract stress and depression,” he said. “It actually helps you with your sleep. It also lifts your en-

dorphins and puts you in a better mood. Even stretching helps you relieve stress.”

The Rec Center offers various outlets for students to relieve stress, Godard said, including RaiderX classes, swimming pools, an indoor track, weight rooms and cardio machines.

During finals week, fewer students go to the Rec, Godard said, but the decline is not large.

“It’s important to have a set time to take time to relieve stress,” he said. “You should get in the habit of doing it and enjoying it.

If you’re not enjoying it, you won’t stick with the activity.”

No matter how busy students

get with responsibilities, according to the Everyday Health website, it is important for them to continue hobbies and other fun activities they enjoy.

During finals week, students tend to be more stressed, Godard said, and they typically worry about getting a certain grade on their finals to get their overall desired grades.

“In college, people underestimate just how much stress students are under,” Hopson said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than a dozen media organizations challenged the government’s ban on the use of drones by journalists Tuesday, saying the Federal Aviation Administration’s position violates First Amendment protections for news gathering.

The organizations, including The Associated Press, filed a brief with the National Transportation Safety Board in support of aerial photographer Raphael Pirker. Pirker was fined $10,000 by the FAA for flying a small drone near the University of Virginia to make a commercial video in October 2011. He appealed the fine to the safety board, which hears challenges to FAA decisions.

An administrative law judge ruled in March that the FAA can’t

enforce its policy against all commercial use of drones when the agency hasn’t issued regulations for those uses. The FAA has appealed the judge’s decision to the full five-member safety board.

Agency officials have said they hope to issue regulations for the use of small drones later this year.

The FAA won’t currently issue drone permits to news organizations.

Officials have sent warning letters to journalists found to have used small unmanned aircraft — most of them no bigger than a backpack — to take photos and videos. The agency suggested to one Ohio newspaper that it refrain from publishing video of a burning building taken independently by a drone hobbyist, even though hobbyists, unlike journalists, are permitted to fly drones, according to the brief.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Over the next month, two of President Barack Obama’s closest first-term advisers will spill insider details on the administration’s handling of the early days of the Great Recession, the White House’s cautious response to the Syrian civil war and the genesis of clandestine talks with Iran.

The back-to-back memoirs from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ex-Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will be the latest installments in what has become an often awkward Washington ritual: one-time confidants signing big book contracts to examine a presidency that is still ongoing and policy decisions that are still being implemented.

Clinton and Geithner’s books will be released just four months after former Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ memoir landed like a sucker punch in the West Wing. Gates gave political advisers in the White House virtually no warning — and no advance copy — of his headline-generating memoir, which included sharp criticisms of Obama’s decision-making.

However, Obama aides do not appear to be girding for a repeat of their experience with Gates’ book as they await the release of Geithner and Clinton’s memoirs.

While Geithner has not provided the White House with advance copies of his book, “Stress Test,” the text has been reviewed by lawyers at Treasury and the Federal Reserve.

And drafts of Clinton’s book, “Hard Choices,” have been circulating for months among a small number of officials in Obama’s National Security Council.

Texas Tech outfielder Sydni Emanuel led the softball team with a .418 batting average this season and broke the school single-season stolen base record with 36, and she’s just a freshman.

Tech coach Shanon Hays said Emanuel has surpassed everyone’s expectations and is already a leader for the team.

“When Sydni is healthy, I don’t think there is a freshman better in the country then her. I think she has proven that,” he said. “She’s having an All-American season as a freshman. When you have someone that’s as impactful as she at the top of the lineup, usually if you walk her it’s like giving up a double. That’s something that is rare to have in this game and it’s been a thrill coaching her.”

Sydni Emanuel was quick to credit her father, Bert Emanuel, for her immediate impact at the collegiate level.

Emanuel said speed comes natural to people on her family but being a great athlete is something that is almost expected.

“Speed is definitely something that runs in the family,” she said.

1999 NFC Championship game, Bert Emanuel made a clutch diving catch late in the fourth quarter that would have given his team the ball in red zone, down by five points with a Super Bowl trip on the line.

The game was suddenly stopped by the referees to review the play, despite the play looking like a clear catch to most people in attendance.

The play was eventually ruled not a catch and two plays later, Emanuel’s season was over.

The next season, the NFL changed a rule that would have caused Bert Emanuel’s play to be a catch. The play still remains one of the most controversial NFL calls today.

Sydni Emanuel said her dad still strongly disagrees with the returned call, as he never reached the Super Bowl after that.

“He never lives that down, any chance he gets to talk about that play – he loves it,” she said. “Especially since he has a son now, my little brother loves looking up old film of my dad and literally picking piece by piece apart everything that he did.”

Due to her father’s disappointment on the field, Bert was determined to make Sydni a star athlete from a very young age.

Spurs’ Buford named Executive of Year

(AP) — San Antonio Spurs general manager RC Buford is finally being honored the way he deserves to be, and the first Executive of the Year award of his well-respected, underthe-radar career might actually be the result of what he didn’t do.

In the wake of a devastating loss to Miami in the NBA Finals last season, Buford didn’t panic. He didn’t give up on an aging Manu Ginobili. He didn’t let Tiago Splitter get lured away by big money elsewhere.

Buford’s approach was the embodiment the Spurs’ creed: Stay the course. Believe in the system. Never give in.

While other teams chased huge stars and made big splashes, Buford quietly re-signed Ginobili and Splitter and added second-tier free agent Marco Belinelli. The moves weren’t flashy, but were exactly what the Spurs needed to recover from that bitter defeat and post the best record in the NBA. In each of his first 11 seasons as GM in San Antonio, Buford was overlooked come awards season. Not this time. Buford was — finally — voted the league’s top executive by his peers.

“I’m extremely happy for RC Buford to have won this award, which

is both absolutely deserved and long overdue,” Spurs Gregg Popovich said Wednesday in a statement issued by the team. “His knowledge of the rules, basketball expertise and keen eye for talent have served the Spurs organization well for a very long time. It has been a personal pleasure to be at his side during this period.”

Buford received nine first-place votes and 58 total points to win the award. Phoenix’s Ryan McDonough (47) finished second for his superb job in turning the Suns from an afterthought into a 48-win team that just missed the playoffs.

Portland’s Neil Olshey, who added Robin Lopez, Dorell Wright and Thomas Robinson to bolster the Trail Blazers’ depth and get them into the playoffs, finished third in the voting with 34 points. Toronto’s Masai Ujiri and Miami’s Pat Riley rounded out the top five.

Popovich, who was named coach of the year, and Buford have been by each other’s side for more than two decades, assembling one of the most uniquely stable systems in professional sports built around Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Ginobili, who have won three championships together and keep coming back for more.

U of Utah president backs Wild jump back in series, top Hawks 4-0 review, update of fight song ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Wild took a two-game deficit and a scoreless tie into the second intermission, clinging tenuously to their chance of climbing back into this Western Conference semifinal series with the Chicago Blackhawks.

After a couple of quiet games and two sluggish periods, Mikael Granlund, Zach Parise and the rest of the Wild’s skillposition players snapped to life.

Granlund scored twice, Parise had a goal and an assist, and Erik Haula jumpstarted the Wild by scoring early in the

third period in a 4-0 victory over the Blackhawks in Game 3 Tuesday night.

Falling behind by three games would’ve been devastating against the defending Stanley Cup champions, but the Wild have been here before. They rallied in January after coach Mike Yeo’s job was in jeopardy. They surged through April to clinch the first wild-card spot.

They won four of the last five games in the previous round to overtake the Colorado Avalanche, getting four tying goals to force overtime and eventually win Game 7 of that series.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — After more than a century of singing “I’m a Utah Man,” some say it’s time to update the University of Utah’s 1904 fight song.

Proposals to adjust such lyrics as “I’m a Utah man” and “our coeds are the fairest” have spiked emotions on campus in recent weeks.

Critics say the lyrics are sexist.

Others contend that the current refrain honors tradition and has sentimental value for classes of alumni.

Similar debates have popped up at schools across the country.

At the University of Utah, President David Pershing is asking the Office of Student Affairs to put together a committee that will weigh changes to the song, “Utah Man” after student government leaders and a faculty body passed resolutions urging the changes.

The university seeks a new refrain “that respects the variety of views across our university community,” Pershing said in a Monday statement.

Hundreds of emails regarding the fight song have flowed into Pershing’s inbox in recent weeks, he said.
