merous other veterans, children and victims of sexual assault and violence.

Exposure to a traumatic event causes certain memories to imprint differently on a brain than normal memories would, Dave Lewis, director of VetStar and professor of practice in the political science department, said. This type of memory more easily creates a flight, fight or freeze response in an individual as it arouses a more primitive brain. When looking for traumatic stress, a patient is screened for feelings of numbness, hyperarousal or sleeplessness.

Post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder are not one in the same, Lewis said.

“We try to emphasize to veterans that [PTS] is a normal reaction to abnormal circumstances, and if we don’t treat it could turn into a disorder,” Lewis said.

Sedeno, a veteran who served in Iraq from 2005 to 2006, suffers from PTSD. It is a life changing and all-encompassing disorder, Sedeno said.

“When I first was diagnosed with PTSD, the D in it describes a disorder,” Sedeno said, “At first when I was diagnosed with PTSD, I felt this negative connotation with it. I felt like I was sick. I’ve grown to realize that that’s not all bad, a disorder is just something that I have to live with and have to deal with.”

PTS is not new in this country, Lewis said. The nation especially saw a rise in this disorder after Vietnam, where the war was paired with social change that led to society somewhat turning its back on veterans.

Because of this, the Vietnam generation shoved its past aside and focused on work, Lewis said, but now with time and age and a heightened acceptability to talk about the war, these men are wearing their hats and showing pride in their service.

The current series of wars in America have also yielded numerous sufferers of PTS and PTSD. “What’s different in this series of wars is multiple deployments, that stress is like a bucket,” Lewis said.

“It keeps filling your bucket every time you go out there.”

In addition to sleeplessness, Sedeno said he is highly aware of his surroundings and constantly vigilant, but most of all, he is anxious.

“Anxiety is the biggest thing for me and all that comes with anxiety — the sweaty palms, my heartbeat racing, being in a crowded room and being really nervous, finding a wall to put my back against,” Sedeno said.

“It has just really changed the way I conduct my normal life now.”

The effects of PTSD have not just affected Sedeno, but have also had an impact on his relationships. PTSD manipulates emotions and moods, he said, which may cause an individual to want to isolate himself or herself.

“Before I went in to seek any help,” Sedeno said, “I found that I couldn’t relate and I couldn’t really talk to friends and even family members, they weren’t relating with me, they just didn’t understand, and I had a hard time with that, because then that just made me feel even more isolated and even more alone.”

For Sedeno, treatment is a combination of medication and therapy. While that works for him, there are many approaches to treating PTS. The Department of Veteran Affairs recognizes prolonged exposure therapy, cognitive processing therapy and eye movement desensitization and programming, Lewis said. There are also non-traditional approaches to treating PTS, such as equine therapy, or therapy using horses, for their emotional intelligence, which Lewis prefers, because when he meets with veterans that are treated at the VA, “they leave with a handful of pills and a six-month appointment,” Lewis said.

Seeking help is not natural for veterans. Soldiers, Marines and airmen are trained to be the rescuers and the helpers in a situation, thus, asking for assistance with PTSD may create a feeling of brokenness, Sedeno said. This view may lead many to attempt to treat themselves.

“A lot of people that are diagnosed with PTSD, they seem to find other ways to try to help themselves,” he said. “They self-medicate, and adrenaline junkies will find whatever way they can find to help themselves.”

It took Sedeno years to attend therapy, he said. As he sat among a group of old, gray-haired, long-bearded men with their Vietnam ball caps on display, he had doubt about any common ground with them.

Once the men began to speak about their experiences with both war and PTSD, Sedeno found that their experiences were similar to and even parallel to his own, he said.

“I found that they understood me better than my best friend would or than my family members would,” Sedeno

said. “That’s why I say that I believe in a veteran-to-veteran peer counseling type.”

The effects of PTSD also show themselves in the community, Sedeno said.

As many veterans turn to drugs, alcohol and adrenaline as means of treating PTSD, they struggle with the attempt to re-assimilate into the community.

“These are unfunded mandates on the community,” Lewis said. “When somebody comes back with a substance abuse problem, and now they’re drinking heavily and they get picked up for their first or second DUI, now they’re in the jail system, now we are spending money in the community to do these kinds of things.”

In Lubbock County alone, an average of 65 veterans are incarcerated each month, while the average amount of money spent on incarcerating an individual for a year is $32,000, Lewis said, according to VetStar’s screening of the jail.

“Let’s intercept that early on,” Lewis said. “Let’s identify those things as early as we possibly can and let’s spend those tax dollars doing other things. We aren’t building parks or other things like that, because we are spending money on the justice system.”

This is not a call for a ‘get out of jail free card,’ Lewis said, but a call for a focus of money and research on treating and helping these veterans.

“Veterans have shown time and time again that they become community leaders, it’s a double investment,”

Lewis said. “We invested for them to go to basic training and we taught them great skill sets in the military, so let’s leverage that capability.”

In the meantime, the Veteran Treatment Courts were erected in 2008, Lewis said. These courts take a more cooperative approach when veterans are brought in. They focus first on finding treatment as opposed to punishment.

There are additional struggles for veterans in more rural areas, as instinct often leads veterans toward isolation. Delivering service to these individuals is a search and rescue mission, Lewis said.

“Everybody that put their hand in the air deserves the same level of service when they come home,” Lewis said, “and it’s harder to do in a rural area.”

The fact that Texas Tech is set in a rural area paired with its extensive research capabilities and its large veteran population allows for many possibilities in research and treatment, Lewis said.

“We have done a lot of things here and we have a lot of people that are interested in this,” Lewis said. “We have a very patriotic and welcoming community in the West Texas and Lubbock area.”

For veterans on campus, there are many resources that are to aid one who is living with PTSD, Sedeno said. The Student Counseling Center and the Military and Veterans Program Office are two prominent examples, and for Sedeno, his work in the MVP office is a form of therapy.

“Me working here is another form of therapy,” he said. “I get to help my veterans. I get to sit down and listen to some of their stories and they get to hear some of my stories and we kind of help each other and point each other in the direction we need to go.”

The ultimate goal of treating PTS is to create better and safer communities, Lewis said.

This goal goes along with a need to end the stigma behind PTSD, Sedeno said.

“If you have a disease above your neck,” Lewis said, “people think very differently than if you have a disease below your neck. Even if I can give you a chemical substance to help you above your neck in terms of the big five psychological things, people still view that differently than having a liver problem.”

In order to bring these stigmas down, there need to be veterans willing to participate in research and who are interested in solving veteran issues, Lewis said. PTSD is not something someone can beat alone.

If individuals, and even society as a whole, can change the way they view PTS and PTSD, the stigma behind the disorder can be lessened and treatment will come easier, Sedeno said.

“It’s something that we are dealing with and even the slightest ‘Hello,’ or ‘How are you?’ the genuine ‘Hello,’ and ‘How are you?’ can help somebody in a crisis who is dealing with PTSD,” Sedeno said.

Texas executes man for killing 12-year-old boy HUNTSVILLE (AP) — A South Texas man was executed Wednesday for the 1998 slaying of a 12-year-old boy whose blood the convicted killer said he drank after beating the seventh-grader with a pipe and slitting his

throat.

Pablo Lucio Vasquez told police he was drunk and high when voices convinced him to kill David Cardenas in Donna, a Texas border town about 225 miles south of San Anto-

nio. He also told detectives in a videotaped statement that he drank some of the boy’s blood.

Asked by the warden if he had a final statement, Vasquez, 38, told relatives watching through a win-

dow that he loved them and thanked them for being there, then turned his head to look through an adjacent window where four of his victim’s relatives stood.

“I’m sorry to David’s family,” he said. “This is the only way that I can be forgiven.

You got your justice right here.”

As the lethal dose of pentobarbital began taking effect, he said he was a little dizzy. “See you on the other side,” he said, raising his head off the gurney pillow and looking toward two of his sisters, a brother-in-law and a cousin.

He snorted loudly once, then dropped his head back to the pillow and took a few quiet breaths before all movement stopped.

He was pronounced dead 24 minutes later at 6:35 p.m.

Public mental health in Texas underfunded

By EASTON WOLLNEY Staff Writer

Mental health help is a common discussion on college campuses, but the legal side is often overlooked in the conversation.

Brian Shannon, Paul Whitfield Horn professor at the Texas Tech School of Law, said mental health programs are not always well funded by the state.

“For a number of years, the public mental health systems in Texas and a number of other states have been underfunded,” Shannon said, “yet with a growing population, persons with mental illness are going to, you know, be in the communities and in need of services.”

While people with mental illness can commit violent crimes like the rest of the

population, he said many end up in jail for things like loitering, simple theft, vagrancy or drug offenses, which is a manifestation of their illnesses.

“Unfortunately, with a lack of significant community based services, many times, sadly, individuals get caught up in the criminal justice system,” Shannon said, “and, you know, people with mental illness by and large are no more prone to committing crimes than others.”

Some with mental illness may be diagnosed for the first time while in jail, Shannon said, and they cannot stand trial if they do not have awareness of the proceedings and cannot assist their legal counsel.

Many times, if someone is seen as not competent to stand trial, Shannon

said the court will order them to competency restoration treatment so that they may stand trial or reach a plea agreement.

“These are illnesses of the brain,” he said, “just like your pancreas can get sick, your brain can get ill.”

The brain is an important organ that is supposed to send signals to someone when something is wrong, Shannon said, but if it is not functioning properly then there can be a lack of recognition or insight.

If a person refuses to get mental care, friends and family can file a civil legal suit, Shannon said, and the court will assess that person to see if they may have a mental illness and if they are or could potentially become a danger to themselves or others.

Dr. Kelly Bennett, medical director at Student Health Services and professor of family medicine at Tech’s Health Sciences Center, said mental health problems can act as an explanation for why someone is in legal troubles, but it

is not an excuse.

“The court systems will usually take that explanation into account,” Bennett said, “and that’s why we have the ability to, you know, have people plead innocent by reason of insanity.”

She compared the situation to doctors writing sick notes for patients.

It may not excuse the person, Bennett said, but it acts as an explanation for why they may have missed work or school. @EastonWollneyDT

Off-campus mental health services available to students

Mental health services, including counseling, are available to students off campus as well as on the Texas Tech campus.

Beth Shapiro is the proprietor of Gateway Counseling.

Gateway has counseling for family and parenting, addiction, medical stress, sexual harassment, abuse and rape, according to its website.

“You can’t just camouflage (a hurt emotion) or just put a Band-Aid on it,” Shapiro said. “A lot of times you have to do something to fix the hurt. The majority of most mental health clients are dealing with depression or anxiety issues.”

Gateway Counseling has also started working with sex offenders, Shapiro said, including a therapy group.

“It is a normal experience for any of us at any

time to be having problems regulating our feelings, dealing with emotions or working through grief and loss issues, dealing with relationship problems or family issues,” Shapiro said. “That’s simply a part of being human.”

Sharon Davis is the executive director of Contact Lubbock, a crisis line for those dealing with suicide.

Contact Lubbock has a suicide crisis hotline, antibullying and suicide awareness, and survivor support programs, Davis said. Contact also has a suicide prevention program targeted to grade schools, that teaches children how to recognize suicidal signals and how to talk about the issue.

The crisis hotline is an active listening line, where Contact representatives listen and talk through a caller’s problems and work

to change their mind about suicide, she said.

The anti-bullying program is not only meant for grade school students, Davis

said, but is also meant for senior citizens and everyone in between. It teaches life skills, how to treat others and how to react to bullies.

“A bullying problem is a human nature problem, not a school problem,” she said.

Contact also has a suicide survivor program, meant to

comfort and support those left behind by an individual who succeeds in taking his or her own life, Davis said.

Brian Carr, a licensed psychologist and president of Behavioral Health Associates, said he does a large amount of learning disability testing, including attention deficit disorder and dyslexia, where students need accommodations from Tech.

His practice also includes counseling, hypnosis and biofeedback, according to his website.

The way that people who may need help look at the idea of getting that help is also important, Shapiro said.

“The same way we go to a physician if we’re going through a respiratory infection or pneumonia,” she said, “it’s just as fine to go to a psycho-therapist or counselor to deal with emotional-based issues.” @JohnBowlesDT

Should employers monitor social media use?

uring the summer, I remember watching one of Lubbock’s news channels in the evening, and they were reporting on a Bennett Elementary School teacher in Lubbock being relieved of her duties.

It was because of a Facebook post the teacher, identified as Karen Fitzgibbons, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, had put online. The post was ultimately deleted.

The post was in regard to a McKinney police officer’s confrontation with a black teenager that went viral through a Facebook video during the summer.

If I remember correctly, just about this whole summer was dedicated to talking about that, or at least that is what I assumed from watching television.

I think social media is exposing people for who they actually are, which unfortunately is a bunch of racists.

However, when Fitzgibbons was voicing her opinion on the situation, she treaded into dangerous waters.

“The blacks are the ones causing the problems and this ‘racial tension.’ I guess that’s what happens when you flunk out of school and have no education,” Fitzgibbons’ post read, according to the article.

A day after writing that article, Fitzgibbons was fired — and justly, too.

It is no surprise many companies, corporations and organizations hold their reputation in the highest regard. So it was also no surprise that the

However, this also brings up the issue of the workplace and its role in the world of social media.

I’ve found since I joined the professional world (I’m giving myself a lot of leeway as to the definition of professional) many bosses or higher-ups that I work with have shot a Facebook friend request to me.

This is a pretty common thing with many people, and I think it is a good way to put people on a leash or at least make sure they are not doing anything that could jeopardize their company or their job.

As long as a boss or administrator does not get too worked up about personal likes and dislikes, this should not cause any problems. But when you get cases like Fitzgibbons, you are not only saving the reputation of your organization — you are probably saving the education of a young black child.

Just about one week ago in Pittsburgh, TV anchor Wendy Bell was fired for her Facebook post regarding young black children’s “multiple fathers with multiple jobs,” according to an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

I think social media is exposing people for who they actually are, which unfortunately is a bunch of racists.

Mind you, I do respect other people’s opinions (or at least I think I do) when they are different than mine, but it is utterly inappropriate for a professional of any kind to post things like this.

The Internet is meant to be a safe haven for all kinds of speech, and having these employers viciously attacking your free speech rights by always watching your social media presence is absolutely appalling.

These companies are no better than the Chinese government, which has an active firewall on the Internet browsers on every Chinese computer under its control.

Anyone is allowed to go online and say what he or she believes without the fear of losing a job. With these companies going around and firing people left and right for voicing their opinions, people are always worried about what they say online.

Everyone is entitled to free speech, and these companies are trying to squelch their employees’ voices. Through providing the employees with company-made social media accounts, these companies are allowing the employees to keep their personal social media accounts as their own.

While these individuals are allowed to keep their original social media accounts to themselves, which sometimes is considered to be unprofessional, these new social media accounts will only be used for professional purposes.

Furthermore, having these professional social media accounts in place will benefit the workplace as a whole, while serving their original purposes of helping employees be social in the workplace.

While some may argue that people should be responsible with what they post online,

they are highly mistaken in their opinion.

The main use of the Internet is to spread ideas, with it being a place where everyone can get their opinion out in the open.

Firing people because of their online behavior is completely acceptable, combing through social media accounts to find an incriminating statement is completely immature and should be considered unacceptable on the company’s part.

While some individuals have done nothing wrong, there are a few examples of where the individual deserved to be fired. According to a CNN article by Alanne Orjoux titled “Ohio cop fired after Facebook post about activist’s suicide,” a cop was fired because of a highly offensive comment left on an activist’s memorial post.

According to the article, “In the comments section underneath a news item…a post from Facebook user Lee Cyr remarked: ‘Love a happy ending.’”

The main use of the Internet is to spread ideas, with it being a place where everyone can get their opinion out in the open.

While this behavior is completely unacceptable for any individual, the types of employees that are getting fired are posting their opinion on various hot topic issues, such as their political views or opinions about their job.

Everyone is allowed to have an opinion. When this opinion causes them to get fired, however, the employers are often in the wrong for doing so. bdefilippis@dailytoreador.com

Faculty coalition supports campus LGBT groups, condemns slurs

A

t a major research university, the faculty plays several roles in fulfillment of the institution’s educational goals. We are researchers who are tasked with bringing our knowledge in our specific areas to students, but more importantly, we are also tasked with training our students to be full participants in civil society.

In short, students who graduate from Texas Tech should be both well trained for their future careers, but also critical thinkers who are able to participate in civil debate.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to respond when the discourse on campus falls short of the ideals we are charged to uphold.

Unfortunately, we have perceived such a downturn in the discourse concerning our LGBT community, and we feel that as faculty we have a responsibility to make a corrective intervention.

The breakdown in civil engagement and dialogue has taken several forms throughout this academic year, culminating in a recent act that epitomizes the damage done by the persistent and malicious discursive violence.

Last week, the advertising campaign for an upcoming campus event included distribution of a flier containing a homophobic slur.

Although this slur was used by an invited speaker to describe himself, it is a word that many members of our LGBT community have had used against them in threatening circumstances.

Members of our community have felt personally harassed and discriminated against because of the manner in which this flier was distributed.

It is disturbing that such language is being shared on campus, and that this occurs without the kind of thoughtful

engagement, debate or contextualization that might befit the use of controversial language.

We, of course, recognize that one malicious act does not in and of itself signal a campuswide problem; it is when that event is a symptom of an ongoing discursive habit that the entire campus is at risk of failure in one of its most central goals.

We have noticed such a pattern in some student responses to LGBT events on campus, which, instead of the informed dialogue and critical engagement they are meant to engender, have resulted in threatening and hateful speech, often by actors veiled in anonymity.

Whenever the GayStraight Alliance sponsors an event in the Student Union Building, YikYak explodes with violent language in attempt to silence these members of our community.

Such incidents might appear on the surface to be thoughtless vandalism, idle trolling or simply careless use of language, but they have farreaching consequences.

They are part and parcel of larger discourses that frequently escalate to or excuse threats, intimidation and violence.

They promote a culture of fear among members of

our community, even as they stifle the kind of dialogue that we should be practicing at a major university, which seeks to promote cordial debate and discussion at all levels.

In this election season, we have seen a deterioration of civil discourse across the country, and we wish to retain the integrity of the discourse here at Tech.

It is vital that we engage in lively debate, address controversial topics and listen to multiple perspectives, even those we find distasteful.

However, escalations of hostility, insults and intimidating speech do nothing to promote discussion.

Rather, they silence members of our community and further exacerbate divisions — one cannot learn when one is afraid.

Great strides certainly have been made, and many LGBT events have been well received and attended on our campus.

But there is a continued imperative that we do not remain silent to actions and words that evoke fear.

Language is powerful, and by holding our community and ourselves accountable, thoughtful debate and advancement toward progress are possible.

In the spirit of taking responsibility for campus culture around these issues, the undersigned faculty would like to send our own message here, to members of the LGBT community, allies and those who believe in promoting equality and social justice at Tech: we support you.

We condemn intolerance and hate speech on our campus. We are here to help promote social justice in any and all ways and at all levels on Tech’s campus.

HSC creates mental health nursing program

When a primary care physician needs to refer a patient to a mental health specialist, there is a 66 percent chance the patient will not receive the high-quality care needed, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

With less than 600 mental health nurse practitioners in the state, Susan Calloway, associate professor of nursing in the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, said this mental health workforce shortage is one reason HSC has created a new psychiatric mental health program.

“Mental health disorders are the most disabling of all health disorders,” Calloway, director of the nursing program, said. “You can separate a broken leg from your life, but when a mental health disorder clouds your thinking, it doesn’t allow you to fully experience life like everyone else does.”

The HSC School of Nursing will accept applicants to its program beginning May 1, Calloway said, and the application period will close Aug. 1. The program will begin Spring 2017 or Fall 2017, depending on which track a student follows.

The Lubbock area requires more accessible nurse practitioners, particularly in rural parts of West Texas, Emily Merrill, The CH Foundation endowed professor of APRN studies, associate dean and department chair of APRN Programs, said.

“There’s a need, whether it’s children, adolescents, adults, older people — mental health goes all the way across the lifespan,” she said. “Mental health affects us from the moment that we’re born to when we die.”

For this reason, applicants from Lubbock or

West Texas are preferred, Calloway said, but all qualified applicants will be CALLOWAY considered.

The program has great potential, Merrill said, because the region has never had a psychiatric mental health program in nursing.

The program will be offered online, she said.

Computer system requirements are listed on the program’s website.

“A lot of the material can be done online, and that’s going to be able to help people out in rural areas in all parts of Texas and other places,” Merrill said. “The online (program) makes it more accessible, absolutely.”

Similar programs are only offered face to face, Calloway said, making HSC the only state school with a primarily online mental health program.

Students will most likely be working nurses who return to school, she said, so an online program makes it possible for these students to further their educations.

“You don’t have to disrupt your family or yourself by moving,” Calloway said. “It also allows for you to continue with whatever work you are doing because most students now don’t have the luxury of not working.”

Calloway returned to school to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner because she recognized the problematic workforce shortage, she said.

As a nurse practitioner in family practice, Calloway said she realized how difficult it was to refer her patients who had severe or complex psychiatric mental health disorders to specialists.

Some patients, including

those who were suicidal, had to wait three months to be accepted as a new patient in a metropolitan area, she said.

“That type of scenario is played out literally every day,” Calloway said. “There are not enough psychiatric specialists to see the people who need it. Mental health disorders are so prominent, and I think when people think of mental health disorders, they think of schizophrenia or bipolar mania, but depression anxiety is probably the greatest mental health disorder we have.”

Those who live in rural areas are underserved, Merrill said, because there are not enough psychiatrists or other mental health experts to provide for the populations.

In non-metropolitan areas of Texas, there is

one psychiatrist for every 30,280 people, according to an Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Council of Tarrant County study.

Calloway said the HSC program will help the one in four U.S. adults who, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, experience mental illness each year.

“We hope to actually graduate qualified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners who will practice in communities that need help,” Merrill said.

“Our goal is to prepare people so they can practice and improve care.”

To b e a b l e t o r e a c h underserved, rural areas, the School of Nursing must prepare practitioners to go to the patients and use the skills they gain, Calloway said.

The program will teach students a variety of topics, including specific disorders and the impact of brain chemistry on behaviors, she said.

Students will be trained in telehealth, Calloway said, which means they will be able to provide medical services virtually to patients and pro-

vide care to underserved areas.

“We want students to have an excellent eduMERRILL cation and to be able to serve their communities as a psychiatric nurse practitioner,” she said. “I want them to come away feeling like they really had quality courses and feel like they have a great foundation when they leave the program.”

Students have requested the program for several years, Merrill said, and it has taken about two years of work to reach where it is today.

In addition to training students in the classroom, Merrill said she wants to develop an annual psychiatric mental health conference every year for nurse practitioners to have continued education.

“We want to also work collaboratively with the community — psychiatrists and physicians and social workers and all the different professions — to improve care,” she said. “We hope to have a better coalition of concerned people for mental health.”

While stigmas still exist about mental illness, people seem more aware of the help available, Calloway said, but some still sweep it under the rug.

As more people become aware of mental health services provided by specialists like nurse practitioners, there need to be more providers for everyone who needs help, she said.

“Mental health equals good health,” Merrill said.

“There is a great need for people to have accessible, psychiatric mental health care in the community of Lubbock, West Texas and the entire nation.” @DailyToreador

Sexual assault survivors bear psychological cost

Sexual assault leaves an indelible imprint in the mind of the survivor. In several instances, survivors suffer from lifelong psychological consequences.

The victim-blaming culture and the accompanying societal stigma may further exacerbate the problems faced by sexual assault survivors. Moreover, students are often confused about what sexual assault precisely means.

“Sexual assault is just any unwanted sexual experience, whether it’s from intercourse, whether it’s sexual harassment, touching, any of those things,” Kimberly Simón, director of the Risk Intervention and Safety Education office, said.

The consequences of sexual assault can be physical, mental or, as is often the case, a combination of both, Simón said. Some common physical effects of sexual assault include bruises, STIs or STDs and pregnancies. Common mental health effects include anxiety, flashbacks, shame and guilt, social disorders and eating disorders.

“Physical consequences and mental health consequences don’t occur in a vacuum,” she said. “I think those two things interact a lot.”

For instance, when a victim suffers from major physical injuries from sexual assault, it may result in psychological trauma, she said. In contrast, if a victim fails to notice any form of physical injury, that person tends to feel that the incident was not “a big deal,” and they should be able to get over it easily.

Either way, physical effects and mental health effects are indeed closely related in cases of sexual assault, Simón said.

However, mental impacts can be much more subtle to detect and even more difficult to cure. The number of physical effects are limited and they can be typically cured through medication.

“Mental health is not at all clear like that,” she said. “The trickiest thing about their mental health is there is no one thing you look for.”

In addition to the long checklist of mental health symptoms, timescale is yet another factor that leads to further complications, Simón said. Some victims of sexual assault show symptoms of psychological trauma immediately after the incident.

Other survivors appear to be normal for months, sometimes years, when an incident triggers the memories of the past assault and leads to psychological distress. In any case, Simón said, a support group of friends, family members or partners is most helpful in the recovery process.

“So, if I experience assault and my support system is there — if I feel like I have someone I can count on, if I feel like my safety is a priority, if I feel like people believe me, my mental health is more likely to be less impacted,” she said. “What we know is a lot of it depends on support a person gets.”

With sexual assault, there are also several misconceptions. For instance, when people find their bodies respond positively to sexual assault, such as with physical pleasure, it often leads to shame, guilt

and confusion, Simón said.

What people fail to realize is that the body is not in perfect harmony with the brain. The physical pleasure is merely the body’s programmed response to a sexual activity, Simón said.

Another common misconception is that men cannot be sexually assaulted. “(Men) also get asked, ‘Well, are you gay? Does that make you gay? Are you gay now?’ So, we use this sexual orientation

as a weapon,” she said. “We don’t believe men, we think it makes them gay — ‘If you were a real man you could have stopped it.’”

Because of lack of social support, male survivors of sexual assault are even more likely than female survivors to experience psychological effects of the assault, Simón said.

According to a 2015 report by the Association of American Universities, around 23 percent of female undergraduate students said they had experienced some form of nonconsensual sexual contact.

At Texas Tech, a number of departments and student organizations are working toward providing a safe support space for sexual assault survivors, Tricia Earl, unit coordinator for the Tech Women’s Studies Program, said.

Examining the Jeanne Clery campus crime reports from the past few years, Earl said the reports of sexual vio-

lence have increased each year.

“Now, does that mean we are having more cases on campus? Not necessarily. It means people are feeling more comfortable to report,” she said. “So, the numbers are probably going to continue to increase because of our discussions, our forums, our prevention efforts.”

Moreover, perpetrators of sexual assault on college campuses are most often acquaintances of the victims. Sexual assault on college campuses is not “stranger danger,” Earl said.

“Ultimately, what we need to get at is we are all in this in order to prevent, to support, as well as to end this violence,” she said. “We all have to have a stake in this issue.”

Big 12 schools offer psychiatry, counseling services

Campuses across the U.S. try and help students dealing with mental health issues. The Big 12 Conference is working with students to create healthier campuses.

Kelly Bennett, medical director at Student Health Services and professor of family medicine, said the first step when someone is having mental health issues is having the case manager on staff examine the situation.

“All human beings have personal problems, and the change from high school to adulthood is where you have to learn to stand on your own two feet,” Bennett said, “so a lot of problems anybody is going to have anyway come out now.”

Texas Tech has a registered nurse on staff who acts as a case manager and only deals with mental health, she said, and they will speak with the student and fill out a triage sheet before any further actions are taken.

Some students struggling with mental health will go to the Department of Psychology and see one of their fulltime psychiatrists, Bennett said. Some less severe cases will stay at the Student

Wellness Center to see a primary care doctor.

Occasionally Lubbock’s mental health and mental retardation services may need to be called if a student is dire need of medical attention, Bennett said, and sometimes Student Health Services will send people voluntarily to an emergency room at a local hospital to be admitted.

For students suffering from drug and/or alcohol abuse, Tech has a full-time

Raider Assistance Program manager on campus to assist those students, she said.

Schools in the Big 12 and some in other conferences meet once a year to have a conference and discuss health care on campuses, Bennett said, and this past year it was in Lubbock.

“They either pay them (psychiatrist) themselves like we do or they have some kind of contract situation set up,” Bennett said.

Buddy Norman, an ad-

ministrative assistant at the University of Oklahoma Counseling Center, said the university has interns working toward their doctoral degrees and licensed psychiatrists and psychiatrists on campus that students struggling with mental health can utilize.

“We offer individual couples counseling and then we offer psychiatrists,” Norman said. “We also do psychological assessments.”

Students are able to get

in to see a counselor fairly early on, Norman said, and each counselor handles each case differently.

“They know what certain diagnoses look like,” he said. “If the client does need some type of testing they can do that, but each case is different.”

Students can seek out counseling or psychiatry a t t h e c e n t e r, N o r m a n said, but they recommend that students also see a counselor while seeking

out psychiatry.

“All of the same services are offered for students, faculty and staff of the university,” Norman said.

The center also does testing for students who may have learning disabilities and may need special accommodations, such as more time on tests, Norman said.

Baylor is currently unable to file insurance for psychiatry visits, according to the Baylor University Health Services website, and costs students $175 for an initial visit and $50 to $90 for a follow-up visit.

Students may be able to be reimbursed by their insurance by requesting a “walk-out” statement from their insurance, according to the website.

The counseling center on Baylor’s campus offers counseling for individuals, couples, groups and also has a walk-in clinic, according to the Baylor counseling center website.

Texas Christian University offers students a 24/7 counseling hotline that is also available to students during breaks, according to the TCU counseling website, and also offers psychiatry, which is covered by students’ tuition. @EastonWollneyDT

Professionals offer advice for maintaining mental wellness

Near the end of the school year, many students can begin to get antsy. There are projects, papers and exams due that begin to pile up, and sometimes the mind cannot handle so much pressure.

For the most part, the time leading up to this is when someone should be practicing healthy mental practices.

Sometimes it can be as easy as incorporating exercise into one’s daily routine or just positively reinforcing oneself.

Sometimes people are not where they want to be mentally, Stephen Cook, associate professor of counseling, said, which causes some type of distress. Most of the time this distress can be categorized as anxiety or depression, and can creep up on anyone easily.

This is not always an easy thing to do, and sometimes situations come up that can cause stress in someone’s life, Cook said. When things do come up that cause distress, there is almost always a coping response.

“Coping by its very nature is what people do in response to distress,” Cook said.

Either a person is coping or they are not doing anything at all, which seems impossible, he said. But something that is somewhat similar to doing nothing is a concept Cook said is spontaneous remission.

This is usually related to those with cases of depression or a general anxiety disorder, he said. Sometimes people can get better over time.

Through his research, he said, he knows that psychotherapy has a more efficient, longer-lasting effect on people.

“The effect of therapy is basically more powerful than spontaneous remission,” Cook said. “The effect, the benefits, does more than just spontaneous remission.”

There are also many factors that go in to the causes of distress, he said. Genetics and physiology can be reasons that may cause an onset case of depression or anxiety. Sometimes that type of distress can creep up slowly and other times it is quickly overtaking.

pends on the students and the coping strategies they might have, Joaquin Borrego, director of the clinical psychology doctoral program, said.

“There are so many factors that one should take into account,” Borrego said, “but everybody responds to stressors differently.”

In many cases, symptoms of depression can begin with loss of interest and grow to different areas like eating more, he said. For the most part anxiety is something physiological in nature and affects people physically, but has some differences as well.

Everyone experiences sadness in everyday life, he said, but there is a certain threshold that sadness goes past that triggers distress.

It is almost unavoidable to experience some type of adversity in life, he said, which would cause some type of distress.

“We all, as human beings, experience all of these, what might be seen as negative events at some point in our lives,” Borrego said.

Many professionals recommend taking some time aside to meditate or schedule some personal time, he said, but sometimes students or people in general may not think that it is possible.

This is when organizational or time management skills come into play, Borrego said. Sometimes it may be as simple as waking up about 30 minutes earlier than usual and setting some time aside then.

There has also been some research done on people who release their depression or

anxiety through reading, which is known as bibliotherapy, Borrego said. People may be able to respond positively by getting advice from books.

“Most students at Tech, a lot of them are in a different city now, their parents are not necessarily monitoring their activities,” he said. “It’s easier in some cases to have access to alcohol or other substances.

They can become vulnerable to that.”

Sometimes it may be that people use alcohol or drugs as their coping mechanism, he said. From a professional standpoint, this is considered an ineffective strategy.

“We also highly recommend exercise, and the (Robert H. Ewalt Recreation Center), at this time of year, will still continue to offer classes,” Anneliese Bustillo, prevention specialist from the Risk Intervention and Safety Education office, said. “And you can do anything from high-intensive cardio classes to yoga classes.”

The most important to thing to keep in mind is to cope in ways that works for the specific individual, Bustillo said. Just sitting and thinking about ways to face problems head on can help ease stress.

Comparing stress to a stomachache, Bustillo said one way to get rid of it is to think of what may have caused the stomachache.

Mindfully thinking about it can help people both find ways to get rid of stress and avoid it in the future.

There are also people who distort reality and cause more stress on themselves by thinking in unrealistic circumstances, sometimes called cognitive distortions, Cook said. It is like throwing fuel on the fire, he said, and causes more stress for people.

Thinking that getting a bad grade on a test will ruin one’s whole college career is a good example of cognitive distortion, he said. Even though everybody wants to do well, not poorly, it is not always the end of the world.

One way to evaluate oneself and stop from thinking like that is to eliminate dichotomous thinking, he said.

“For instance, there’s red flag words that can cue us,” Cook said. “If I find myself using words like always, never, none, all, it’s a red flag in that, if I’m being aware of that I can ask myself, ‘wait a

minute, is that true?’”

For instance, if someone loses their keys and thinks to themselves, ‘I always lose my keys,’ they are using those red flag words, he said.

The best way to positively reinforce oneself is to avoid those words.

There are many other healthy alternatives to coping, Borrego said, and the best way to go about anything is to always keep a healthy body in general. Many times people do not consider mental health part of overall health, but they should be considered the same thing.

“There’s still a stigma in the U.S. about mental health. You hear these pejorative terms, ‘that person is crazy, right?’” Borrego said.

“But rest assured that when you seek professional services, your information will be kept confidential.” @MichaelCantuDT

Social media can have negative health impact

College students use social media on a daily basis, however, constant use of it may cause some mental health issues.

Students have access to all types of different platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat.

However, having access to so many social platforms can affect the way people behave and the way they think.

According to degreed.com, using social media can affect someone’s behavior in several ways.

One way this affects people is an anxiety disorder called the fear of missing out. People get so caught up in the digital world they view on social media sites that when they see things they cannot do or see gatherings with people they know, they become angry or sad they cannot participate and this gives them anxiety.

People wish to be on top of everything that is going on with social media so much that this causes them to no longer have the ability to be satisfied, according to the website, and this leads them to get on more sites to look for entertainment.

“People will play longer and longer little, cheap games, just to get the dopamine release,” Charles Crews, associate profes-

sor and program coordinator for the School of Counseling, said.

“They’ll get on their Facebook to see if something is new, they’ll be on Twitter just going through everyone’s stuff, or even on Instagram, all these different ones.

It’s a constant buildup, it’s like a snowball — you never get back to that first high.”

Social media can be very addictive, according to degreed.com, and 63 percent of Americans log on to Facebook daily and 40 percent log on multiple times. This excess of Facebook usage can be a result of boredom, Crews said, and also the constant approval of likes and comments gives people reason to keep posting.

People will portray themselves differently on social media to meet a certain expectation that the public requires, Crews said. He believes people attempt to be more extreme with their content to get attention online.

“When it comes to social media, it’s more of producers and receivers of information, so you have the people that are producing stuff,” he said. “Whatever makes it more extreme, I think more of that content makes people’s heart beat more.”

Crews said people filming themselves using wing suits flying hundreds of miles per hour is an example of extreme content that people are excited to see. He

said he sees this action as a want for more interesting content. Now instead of people seeing a fight and breaking it up, they get out their phones and post it online.

This trend, Crews said, has been prominent even before social media became popular, but now it affects the way people behave on a daily basis, wanting to do more extreme things to get that extra like.

Another example of this is the increase of nudity and promoting drug and alcohol use on social media, he said.

“It leads to more extreme stuff over time,” he said, “and once you put something out there and people like it, people are going to keep sending that stuff because we’re all after that dopamine in our brain.”

There are also things like phantom ring syndrome that is a direct effect of the overuse of social media, Crews said. This is when people feel like their phone is vibrating in their pocket with a new notification of a text message, but it is just an itch that they get because their body has gotten accustomed to it and now anticipates the feeling.

major from Lubbock, said she believes social media usage is not an issue as long as someone can control it.

“I think it makes people more connected to everyone,” she said.

“I think using it too much can get you distracted from other things.

People definitely get consumed with it, but if you keep it at a general level you’re fine, just don’t let it consume your life.”

Although there are generally more negative mental health issues related to social media, Crews said he believes it can also affect people in a positive way.

“I like to use it for positive affirmations,” he said. “I love motivational things that are online, even though it might be attributed to someone else.”

Many people online have daily scriptures and look to what their religious leaders are saying, Crews said, and that is just a way they can get connected with positivity through social media.

Another positive effect can be when someone dies, and family and hundreds of people post online to give their condolences, he said. It can affect the way they view the situation, and they can

interpret that as they are not alone and have so many people who care for them.

“I do see some of the costs and benefits because there was a few studies done where people feel more isolated when they use social media too much,” he said.

“What I recommend to a lot of my clients is, just like I recommend to them to not listen to country music when they are depressed, that’s how I do with social media — don’t get on there because you’re comparing your life to other people.” @RyanOrtegonDT

Student Counseling Center offers campus services

Stress often occurs in a college student’s life, and the combination of academics, being social and jobs culminate into stress taking over the student’s attitude and mindset.

The Student Counseling Center is the primary resource for students on campus to help them with their mental health, Assistant Director and Licensed Psychologist at the Student Counseling Center Klinton Hobbs said.

There has been a realization that students in college need some sort of mental health care, Hobbs said. Students are going through things that have not happened in their lives before.

“College is such a stressful time for these students,” Hobbs said. “You have students that are more academically busy than they have been in their entire lives. They are also grappling with living alone for the first time and trying to develop their identity as an adult. All of these different things combine to create a high level of stress and anxiety.”

Lisa Viator, the clinical services director at the SCC, said she thinks it is important for students to take advantage of the SCC services because it wants students to be as successful as possible academically, personally and socially.

“We are here to help students learn how to manage and get well and function

at their highest potential,” Viator said.

Different students come to the SCC for different reasons, Hobbs said. The student could be experiencing excessive stress and anxiety or depression.

Different services available to students include individual therapy, group therapy and the use of biofeedback in the MindSpa, Hobbs said.

Attending group therapy is a way to get students who are going through similar problems together to talk about it, Hobbs said. Different therapy groups include sexual assault survivor groups, LGBT groups, transgender support groups and mood disorder groups.

Viator said having these difficulties and not having someone to talk with about it is like having to climb a mountain with a 100-pound bag on your back.
