Adversity defines Smith’s time at Tech

Tubby Smith accepted his job as the head coach for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team knowing his job required rebuilding a program years out of an NCAA tournament appearance. Three previous coaches in a span of nearly five years did not resolve Tech’s lack of wins and March Madness appearances, and then came Smith.

Junior Devon Thomas nearing the end of the season said the team has bought into Smith’s philosophy.

“Coach Smith, he’s just a g r e a t g u y. H e ’s r e a l down to earth,” Thomas said. “He’s a great guy on and off the court, that’s part of the reason why I committed here.”

Picking up the pieces left behind from an 1120 finish in the 2012-13 season, Smith needed to fill the spots left behind by two transfers and one senior. In his first season coaching the Red Raiders, Smith recorded a 14-18 record, an improvement from last season but not near the team’s desired results.

Once the season hit restart, Smith saw the team in a similar situation to the one he walked into in his first season. Two more players transferred and the team registered the youngest group of players with five freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors

of the Tech bench to a situation that grew even more drastic after Smith dismissed junior forward Justin Jamison near the midpoint of Big 12 play.

The losses accumulated

throughout the 2013-14 season and by the conclusion of the season, Tech gathered just three wins in the Big 12.

Despite the string of losses, a few bright spots

popped up last season.

JUSTIN GRAY SOPHOMORE GUARD In his second season as head coach of the Red R a i d e r s , Tu b b y S m i t h experienced what he did not see at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky and Minnesota — a losing season. Entering his third season at the helm, he forged a plan to not finish at the bottom of the Big 12.

His plan started with a trip to Canada. For five days, Tech competed against four Canadian universities and went undefeated in its foreign tour. More than just practice, Tubby Smith said the preseason trip added more time for the new players joining the Red Raiders to create a cohesive relationship with the returning players.

At first, Tech rolled past most of its opponents in the non-conference portion of the schedule, but enter-

ing Big 12 play the team hit a snag as ranked teams filled the conference.

Four straight losses against Big 12 opponents brought Tech’s overall record to 11-5, and the season began to appear as a mirror image of the team’s previous campaign.

Then a turnaround occurred under an unlikely set of circumstances. Odiase went down with a foot injury after a win at TCU. In the three games preceding the TCU game, Tech dropped two by a margin of less than eight points and a then No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners handed the Red Raiders a 91-67 loss.

Under Tubby Smith’s watch, Tech did not falter in the last half of conference play. Facing three ranked opponents in a row, the Red Raiders snuck away on the winning end to bring themselves into the hunt for an NCAA tournament spot.

A then No. 14 Iowa State, No. 21 Baylor and a No. 3 Oklahoma fell to the revamped Red Raiders in the stretch of almost two weeks, and Oklahoma State and TCU joined the list of victims soon after.

After defeating the Sooners 65-63 at home, Tubby Smith said Tech reached a point in a season where patience, poise and aggression brought out the best of the team.

“I think now, our players understand that every possession, every second they’re on the court, they have to give it their all,” Tubby Smith said.

“They’re just starting to believe and appreciate how hard and how much we have to overachieve.”

It took two losing seasons and a five-game winning streak, the longest in the Big 12 for Tech, for the team to finally see its potential.

Work remains for the Red Raiders, but Tubby Smith has taken the steps to reconstruct a program vying for an NCAA spot.

After every game, validating Tech’s spot in the postseason turned into the driving force for the team.

Building a five-game winning streak with three wins coming against ranked opponents displays the fruition of a longawaited award, Gray said.

“To get guys to really buy into his philosophy and what he stands for as a coach and to rebuilding a program from the bottom up, I think it speaks volumes of his abilities as a coach,” Gray said.

Awaiting selection Sunday, Tech has a solid shot at joining March Madness as a seven seed, according to Joe Lunardi’s ESPN bracket predictions. If the Red Raiders enter the postseason, Smith will take Tech to where the team has always wanted to be. @DGaytanDT

Spurs CEO retires after 20 years with franchise SAN ANTONIO (AP) — San Antonio Spurs CEO and chairman Peter Holt, whose selfless ownership is credited with helping the team win five NBA championships, is retiring after 20 years running one of sports’ elite franchises.

He will be replaced as CEO by his wife, Julianna and, at her request, Spurs president of business operations Rick Pych. The team said Wednesday that Peter Holt will remain on the team’s board of managers, but his wife will take over his role on the NBA’s Board of Governors. Peter Holt has served as chairman of that board.

Holt first joined the Spurs as a minority owner in 1993, but was named CEO and chairman in 1996 after becoming team’s largest shareholder.

“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved over the last two decades,” said Holt, whose family owns Holt Cat machine

and equipment company.

“The championships are wonderful, bringing new sports franchises to San Antonio is important but the biggest accomplishment for me will always be the impact we’ve had in our community. The pride, support and love that our city has for the Spurs is truly amazing.”

It was under Holt’s guidance that the Spurs hired former assistant coach Gregg Popovich as general manager in 1994. Popovich became the team’s coach on Dec. 10, 1996, and has led San Antonio to five championships and 19 straight postseason appearances, including a berth this season with the league’s second-best record at 54-10.

Gotcher leaves mark at Tech

Once through with the handshakes after an 80-71 win over the Kansas State Wildcats in his last home game as a player for the Texas Tech men’s basketball team, redshirt senior guard Toddrick Gotcher grabbed a microphone and paused the crowd in the United Supermarkets Arena trickling out to the exits.

Only his teammates knew about the announcement Gotcher planned on delivering. At first, Gotcher looked to give one final farewell to the fan base and community that supported him in his five years at Tech, until he pulled out a ring. By the time he made his way off Tech’s home court, Gotcher walked out with a likely trip to the NCAA tournament and a fiancée. A perfect final moment on his home court.

Junior guard Devon Thomas said Tech felt motivated to send off its senior class in an exciting fashion.

“We have Toddrick (Gotcher) and D-Will (Devaugntah Williams) as the seniors, and this is their last time playing for Texas Tech,” Thomas said. “We actually want to send them out with a bang so we’re definitely just all in.”

Four years removed from his freshman season, Gotcher now finds himself part of a team that broke a near decade-long streak of below .500 finishes in the Big 12.

Before playing in the best season of his college career, Gotcher wrestled with the uncertainty surrounding Tech after his first two seasons on the roster.

When Tech coach Tubby Smith signed on to take his current job, Gotcher had already seen two coaching changes and in his first year alone, six players transferred to different universities.

Looking into the past, Gotcher said near his sophomore and junior years he began to question his place at Tech, but after talking to his parents, he found more meaning behind his agreement to play for the Red Raiders.

“My dad and mom, they always said, you committed to the school and you came to Tech to play for Texas Tech, for the name on the front of the jersey, not the coaches really,” Gotcher said.

Talking to his parents and feeling support from people outside of basketball assured Gotcher of his decision to follow through on his commitment, he said. The first two seasons playing under Smith, however, did not follow a path as glorious as the one he finds himself in now.

In his sophomore and junior years, Tech combined for just eight wins against Big 12 opponents and three wins versus a ranked opponent.

More transfers followed each of those campaigns, but as with the seasons before, Gotcher stuck to his word.

At the end of his junior year, Gotcher knew he would take a central leadership role in a group composed of mostly freshmen and sophomores.

Coach Smith said Gotcher embodies the ideal student athlete, both on the court and in the community, as his family-oriented background influences his ability to care for a cause and for a group of people.

“He’s as caring of a young man as I’ve had the good fortune to work with and coach,” Smith said. “He’s a guy who willingly takes the heat for everybody else. He’s one of those guys who will sacrifice himself, his game, whatever it takes for the benefit of the team.”

Of the many challenges facing the team in his last

season, Gotcher said breaking through the image of a losing team tested Tech more than anything heading into and competing in the 201516 season.

“It’s been really tough for my career here,” he said. “It’s starting to come at the light of the tunnel, so it’s been really fun for what we have done this season.”

Gotcher describes himself as self-driven, but he sees himself thriving in a supportive group environment.

In his academics, Gotcher attributes his parents’ constant communication with him as his added motivation, and on the court, he sees the company around him as the people who assure him of the team’s promise.

Midway through the Big 12 portion of their schedule, the Red Raiders had three wins and seven losses in conference play and for a moment, the season looked like another addition to postseason absences since 2007.

The team, along with Gotcher, began to see themselves differently and began believing in what they could accomplish.

Out of all the teams he has been a part of, Gotcher said this season’s team shares a connection built on trust and reliance on one another.

“I feel like these are friendships I have for the rest of my life,” Gotcher said.

“We have that relationship because of what we have done here, the practices that we’ve been through and the tough times that we’ve been through here.”

After defeating Oklahoma State in early February, Tech turned its season around by winning six of its last nine games, with three of the wins coming against ranked opponents.

“As a coach you have to empower him to say, ‘Hey look, it’s your team.’ You have to have someone in the locker room you can trust that he’s going to say the right things,” Smith said.

“He’s going to be encouraging players even when he’s having a tough time.”

Not only did Gotcher push team morale, he may have played his best season with the Red Raiders this season. At the end of his junior season, Gotcher averaged 7.3 points, 2.7 assists and started in 22 of 32 games. This season, Gotcher tallies an 11.2 scoring average, 3.7 rebounds and drew a start in all 30 games.

“It’s been remarkable just to see from when I came in to now,” he said. “I’ve been through a lot of adversity, and it’s one of the greatest feelings in the world to know that I’m leaving on a good note.”

How much longer Gotcher plays depends on how far Tech goes in the postseason. Although he will leave the program by the end of March, he is leaving behind a new identity for a young team.

His future may not include playing for the Red Raiders, but Gotcher said he

does not see himself far from supporting a new generation at Tech. A wedding awaits Gotcher, and as an athlete named onto the Big 12 Honor Roll numerous times, he sees his future full of options.

“Texas Tech has been my village because they have supported me and all the adversity I’ve been through, been here for me in the academics, the community and just everyone’s been behind me,” he said. “I’ve had no let-ups, I wanted to do it for them. Everything that I do, I want to do it for Texas Tech.” @DGaytanDT

Does technology hinder our comfort with others?

People hesitant to touch Modern technology has due to growing technology increased people’s comfort I

t is widely understood that our growing dependence on technology for communication has hindered our ability to effectively communicate in person. However, we have not fully considered how it affects our ability to express ourselves nonverbally. Being so out of practice, our society struggles with participating in nonverbal communication such as eye contact, gesturing, regulating our tone of voice and, most importantly, receiving and participating in touch.

This is an odd idea, I know. However, as we become more sensitive to the implications of inappropriate touch, looser with the topics of our conversations and more accustomed to avoiding the mess of misconceptions that can accompany physical interaction, we tend to find ourselves less inclined to naturally touch those around us and more aware when we do.

Our lack of physical accompaniment during our overwhelmingly frequent technology-mediated conversations has led us to crave physicality in our face to face conversations. However, this loneliness, which stems from incomplete interactions, often leads to clumsy overcompensation when communicating in person.

Therefore, many of us, but especially females, tend to retreat from these interactions, refrain from extensive exposure to touch and inten-

Pulling away with alarm when someone goes to touch our face, snapping our hand back from a high-five immediately after contact, emotionlessly side-hugging or shamelessly avoiding eye contact are just a few of the abundant ways that we have adapted our social skills in order to avoid uncomfortable displays of affection.

In high school, this became an overwhelming truth for me. While I am sure many would describe me as an affectionate, comfortably physical person, I found myself overwhelmed with a panicked need to reciprocate when touched. If someone leaned into me, grabbed my hand out of excitement or stroked my hair (weird as it sounds, girls are serial hair strokers), I found myself wanting to make sure that I communicated the same level of comfort and affection back to them.

This desire is one that used to be subconsciously maintained, however, as nonverbal communication has become more of an effort and less of an instinct, I found myself struggling to simultaneously manage expressing my thoughts through words and actions.

It was particularly difficult for me to navigate the unspoken language of public displays of affection. As someone who was deeply intertwined in her high school’s organizational leadership, being in a romantic relationship my senior year — the peak of my leadership involvement — was a nightmare.

When it comes to the way we physically interact, I believe we have increased our comfort, mainly with others. Again, this might seem like an over-generalized statement, but I feel like we are better able to be compatible with not only people we know, but also with strangers.

Because we live in a world of faster technology and communication, we can get to know people better. We see that there are things we have in common, and this can spark conversations and possibly even a long-term friendship. This might be a bit dreamy, but it can happen.

What I feel happens is we find friends with people we once saw as complete strangers and are better able to interact. This is how technology has helped boost our sense of friendship.

I think this is also what people older than me and my cohorts overlook many times.

Older folks did not grow up in a time like now, and they might not see things the way we see them. It is a change in the way people have interacted before and I think that it brings us closer together.

Oftentimes I hear people commenting on how all we do is look down at our phones and don’t interact with others, but if you think deeply we actually are interacting, though it may not be face to face. touch. What I am trying to point out, though, is that because of our understanding of people around us we can better empathize with their feelings, be they emotional or physical.

Because we know about many other people’s lives we can set the boundaries as to what is either appropriate or inappropriate. In fact, I would give some people the benefit of the doubt and say that they are properly aware of what proper boundaries are.

We have the opportunity to see what can be viewed as inappropriate through our social media interaction. I even know many people who meet someone for the first time and ask if a hug is something they might be OK with.

Though we always have those folks who might get a bit too friendly when it comes to any sort of physical accompaniment, I think overall we are becoming more comfortable with each other.

Technology has improved our relationships and helps us find common ground, and we should be thankful for that. With that comfort we are better able to talk and become a bit more physical, at the appropriate level.

We have become more aware of our surroundings, and with that I hope we are better able to find comfort in it, especially with those around us. @MichaelCantuDT

Texans score big in free agency, still have work to do

T

he Houston Texans took care of their two biggest offseason needs in quick succession on Wednesday as reports broke of deals with former Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler and former Dolphins running back Lamar Miller, as well as offensive lineman Jeff Allen.

After Brian Hoyer’s meltdown in the first round of the playoffs against the Kansas City Chiefs, it was clear the Texans needed a new quarterback. While it was assumed the team brass would need to draft their next signal caller, they made the bold move and threw some money at Osweiler, who is something of an unknown, but full of potential.

Osweiler gets a four-year deal worth up to $72 million, with $37 million guaranteed, according to profootballrumors.com. The Texans are taking a big risk committing that much money to a guy who’s only started seven games in four NFL seasons, but he’s still young and has a great arm, and he’s probably better at this point than any quarterback they could have selected in the draft. It’s worth the risk.

After releasing backfield mainstay Arian Foster, the team also needed to find a new starting running back, which it did in Miller. He turns 25 next month and was not given a full workload in Miami, so he’s got less mileage than other running backs and he’s tough to catch in the open field. According to profootballrumors.com, Miller gets a four-year deal worth $26 million with $14 million guaranteed.

Just like that, the Texans filled their two biggest holes with players who have big time potential. The benefit of doing this through free agency is it frees them up to take care of other needs in the draft, which is good — because they still have work to do.

Top on the list should be fortifying the offensive line. The team took a big step in that direc-

tion with signing Allen to replace the departed guard Brandon Brooks, who left for Philadelphia via free agency, and bringing back Chris Clark. Assuming Allen starts in Brooks’ old spot at right guard, that still leaves the center position open, as last year’s starter Ben Jones signed with the Titans.

The Texans also signed former Oakland Raider Tony Bergstrom on Wednesday, but Bergstrom has been a backup throughout his career. He should provide depth but should not be counted on to be the starter.

Simply replacing Jones shouldn’t be all they do, though.

The offensive line wasn’t awful last year, but it wasn’t great either, and that was partially because of injuries. With the team investing so much money in its new backfield tandem, it can’t afford to fall short when it comes to protecting Osweiler and opening up holes for Miller. It needs to add some additional depth in addition to replacing Jones.

Next on the list is finding a true No. 2 receiver to play opposite DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins had a fantastic season with multiple quarterbacks throwing to

him, and he’s still getting better.

But the passing attack would be so much more potent, and Osweiler’s transition would be easier, if the team had a strong threat to make opposing defenses think twice before committing all their attention to Hopkins. Plus, if Jaelen Strong’s marijuana arrest turns into a suspension, their depth will take a hit.

Likewise, a pass-catching tight end is desperately needed because Ryan Griffin and C.J. Fiedorowicz might as well be classified as extra offensive linemen. If you’re going to commit tens of millions to Osweiler, you’d better make sure he’s protected and has weapons.

After that, defensive depth is key, especially along the defensive line and in the secondary. It’s possible the team could release nose tackle Vince Wilfork, and even if it doesn’t, Wilfork isn’t exactly a spring chicken anymore, nor is he the same Wilfork from five years ago. 2014 draft pick Louis Nix was a bust, so the Texans need someone who can fill in and possibly start. Defensive end Jared Crick is a free agent, so he must either be re-signed or replaced.

most importantly needs depth at the safety positions after Rahim Moore and Stevie Brown weren’t worth the jock straps they wore.

Converted cornerback Andre Hal took to the position nicely, but he needs help. Cornerback Johnathan Joseph isn’t getting any younger either (though he still had a solid season), so adding a little extra depth there would be smart as well.

Finally, it might behoove the team to take a running back late in the draft. Jonathan Grimes is a free agent and unlikely to return, and I’ve never been entirely impressed with Alfred Blue.

Some extra depth behind Miller would make plenty of sense.

Though there’s still plenty of work to be done, the Texans have started off strong. They have their backfield set and now they have to fill in the gaps.

This is likely to be General Manager Rick Smith and coach Bill O’Brien’s last chance to make this team a real winner, so there should be no stone left unturned and no position left unfilled as the team looks to navigate a much tougher AFC South in 2016. editor@dailytoreador.com

Lady Raiders reflect on championship run

The Texas Tech Lady Raiders basketball team was one of the most dominant teams in the 1990s and the early 2000s. Under head coach Marsha Sharp, the Lady Raiders reached the NCAA tournament 16 years in a row, highlighted by winning the National Championship in the 1992-93 season.

Linden Weese, an assistant coach under Sharp, was there for all 22 years that Sharp was coach there, he said.

“We had a lot of success when I was there with Sharp,” Weese said.

“There were great kids and great coaches.”

When Krista Gerlich, now head women’s basketball coach at the University of Texas at Arlington, was a freshman in the 1989-90 season, that was the first time the team had been to the NCAA tournament since the 1985-86 season, she said.

Her junior year, the team made the Sweet 16, and her senior year, the team won the national championship.

The memories that Gerlich has being in the tournament are progressive, she said.

“Every year we accomplished something new and it was such a fun ride,” Gerlich said.

Coming off the Sweet 16 loss to Baylor her junior year, Gerlich remembers how hungry they were to succeed the next year, she said.

“I remember saying at the postgame press conference that this loss just made us hungry,” Gerlich said. “We now knew what the tournament was all about. I said that we would definitely be back the next year. We had a good nucleus coming back the next year. Coach Sharp was back and the assistants were very consistent. It was a program that was building and the pieces of the puzzle were coming together at the right time.”

As a freshman when the Lady Raiders lost in the Sweet 16, Noel Johnson, now head women’s basketball

coach at Midwestern State University, felt a responsibility to play hard for the seniors, she said.

There were instances that year where the team members had to look inside themselves for toughness, Johnson said.

“My freshman year, we lost to Oklahoma State and we should have beat them,” Johnson said. “The plane ride back was not fun. That was not when we had the regulations where when you get back, you can’t practice.

We went straight to the gym after we got off the plane.

That made us tough. We had to reach inside and find that toughness inside of us.”

Gerlich said knew that a goal of the team was to get back to where they were the year before in the tournament.

“I think that it was a goal of ours, that we knew when we got beat, we knew we could do better, we knew that we belonged in that group,” Gerlich said. “We got there and we realized it was not a fluke and it motivated us.”

The energy the community gave the Lady Raiders in the year they made the NCAA National Championship run was amazing, she said. There were many expectations and much excitement from the community and all of West Texas.

Gerlich said the students were the ones who supported them nonstop.

“The students became our sixth man,” Gerlich said.

“Our band, the Court Jesters, were amazing. The recognition on campus of when people saw us was awesome.

They gave us encouragement. We embraced the entire campus and everyone was a part of that.”

In the 1993 NCAA women’s tournament, the Lady Raiders defeated Ohio State in the final game, 84-82.

Johnson remembers the game and how nervous she was during it, she said.

“I remember the nervousness before the games,” Johnson said. “I remember the relief of hitting the free throws down the stretch in

the national championship and trying to be calm, cool and collected, trying to put that game out of reach.”

Johnson also remembers the celebrations that occurred after the championship win, she said.

“I remember the first person I hugged was Krista Gerlich,” Johnson said.

Gerlich remembers hearing about the celebration taking place on campus after the national championship win, she said.

“We won on a Sunday afternoon,” Gerlich said. “Apparently, the students all ran out onto campus, pouring out of their dorms after we won.

They were in the fountain; they were wrapping Will Rogers. They went bumper-tobumper honking on campus.

It was madness.”

Because there was not the technology like cell phones for the team to see the celebration, the team had to hear about the celebration by word-of-mouth, Gerlich said.

“When we got back, that is when we started to see the pictures and how much Texas Tech was proud of us,” Gerlich said. “We were glad that we won the national championship but we wished we could have been there to see the celebration.”

Whenever Johnson thinks about the national championship win, she thinks about rolling up to Jones Stadium in limousines for the celebration, she said. This was one of the best moments of her life.

“That was the most honored I have ever felt,” Johnson said. “Lubbock made us feel so special.”

The team had a special relationship with Lubbock because the city and the surrounding communities never counted them out, Johnson said.

“A lot of people would have counted us out, ranked 10th or 11th in the nation,” Johnson said.

“They all considered us underdogs, but Lubbock and West Texas never thought of us that way.”

Gerlich also learned about being a mediator and a counselor to the 15 girls on a team.

“I remember a scenario in the conference tournament championship game where we were down to Texas and coach Sharp called a timeout,” Gerlich said. “If you are down by a lot early, you would think that she would rip in to you. But I distinctly remember her having a calmness about her. She told us that shots are going to start falling, and it’s going to be OK. After that timeout, we exploded.

I try to use that because at

some points you get frustrated during the game and I think to myself, what would coach Sharp do?”

Johnson learned from the relationships that Sharp, Weese and the other assistant coaches fostered with them, she said.

“We always feel at home when we see them and I want that for my student athletes as well,” Johnson said.

Weese said that he was a good coach because of the good players on his team.

“If you had good players, you would have a chance,” Weese said. “If you didn’t have good players, you were in trouble.”

Gerlich said the team

still communicates with each other often.

“I’m also still really good friends with my teammates, and when we had our 20-year reunion, we picked up right where we left off,” Gerlich said.

Johnson said being a part of this team is one of the greatest moments of her life.

“Being a part of that team changed my life forever, and it still has a huge influence on my life, especially as a basketball coach,” Johnson said. “It’s something that you look back on with great memories. We consistently built the tradition of Lady Raiders basketball.” @DavidGayDT

Tech preparing for longest road trip of season

After canceling its midweek game against Oral Roberts, the Texas Tech baseball team will begin an eight-game road trip on Friday night.

The team will go into the road trip with an 8-5 record.

Tech coach Tim Tadlock said he thinks the team made the right decision to cancel the game because of weather in the Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex.

“It’s good to sleep in your own bed, especially in front of an 11-day road trip,” he said. “We’ll look for a time to make up the game that we missed on Tuesday. But feel good about the decision we made and saving some miles on our guys.”

The road trip will start with a four-game series against No. 9 California at 9 p.m. Friday.

The Red Raiders are finishing off a stretch of 10 out of 12 games being played against ranked opponents.

S e n i o r c a t c h e r Ty ler Floyd said a road trip against solid teams can build character for the younger players on the team.

“It’s fun going to play big time teams on the road,” Floyd said. “They’re a good team, so we are looking forward to it.”

Tech had the hottest offense in the Big 12 Conference entering last weekend, but had its bats silence against the No. 22 Cal State Fullerton Titans. They will now enter the series against California with a .296 team batting average, which is fourth in the conference.

The Red Raiders have blasted nine home runs, which is second in the Big 12.

Junior catcher Kholeton Sanchez said the

offensive production has not come from one single player, but from everyone in the lineup.

“We’ve got a lot of resilience through our whole team. We’ve had a lot of guys, through the depth, that have shown some good things. We’ve shown that we can use all 35 guys on the roster,” he said.

“That’ll probably change once we get in conference, got to cut down the roster, but we’ve seen that we are a complete team.”

The Cal Golden Bears will enter the series with a 9-3 record.

T he s trength of the team is the pitching staff.

Their 2.37 ERA ranks in the top 20 in the nation, according to the NCAA baseball website.

Starting pitcher Daulton Jefferies will likely face Tech this week.

0.95 ERA and is holding opponents to a .197 batting average, according to the Cal Athletic Website.

“Jefferies is going to be a tough challenge for any hitter, much less college hitter,” Tadlock said. “Going to need to string good at-bats together against him. When a guy throws 90 to 95 and his best pitch is a changeup, you got your work cut out for you.”

Tadlock also said he has decided on his four starting pitchers this weekend, but has not yet announced them.

The Red Raider pitching staff ranks sixth in the conference with a 3.51 ERA, according to the Big 12 website.

“I’d say the biggest thing is mental (for Tech’s pitchers). Mentally staying focused and not letting the moment get too big for them,” Floyd said.

“It’s a good lesson for any

pitcher, whether you are young or not.”

Red Raiders return to winning ways

Since the introduction of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament in 1939, Texas Tech has reached the playoffs a total of 14 times. In Tech coach Tubby Smith’s third season as coach, the Red Raiders appear as a lock for a trip to March Madness. Tech’s basketball history extends to 1925, and during the program’s span, the Red Raiders have finished with dominant records and a chance at championship glory.

Two years after Texas Tech was founded, the Red Raider basketball team began competing under the guidance of Grady Higginbotham, according to a Tech media guide.

After 15 years of the NCAA tournament’s existence, Tech made its first appearance in 1954 with a 21-5 overall record and 11-1 Border Conference record to claim the conference championship. Tech’s first showing in March lasted just one round, with Santa Clara defeating the Red Raiders 73-64.

Forward Jim Reed led the offense in 1954 with a 15.7 scoring average and coach Polk Robinson picked up his first of four NCAA tournament appearances in his 18 seasons with the Red Raiders. Reed did not return to the big dance after

finishing his career in 1955, and it took Robinson seven more years following the 1954 season to advance in the tournament. Robinson, however, finished his career without ever picking up a tournament-advancing win, as Tech advanced through a first-round bye and won a compensation game against Houston, 69-67.

Soon after Tech’s run in the 1960-61 season, coach Gene Gibson, who took over for Robinson, won the conference title with a 19-8 overall record and recorded Tech’s first NCAA tournament-advancing victory

with a 68-66 win against Air Force.

The Red Raiders went 11 years without another tournament bid until Tech’s winningest coach, Gerald Myers, brought the team back to the tournament at the conclusion of the 1972-73 regular season.

Myers recorded his first tournament appearance as coach in the 1975-76 season and delivered a Southwest Conference tournament championship. In the opening round of the 1976 tournament, Tech defeated Syracuse 69-54 behind a 21-point performance from

sophomore forward Mike Russell and 19 points from senior center Rick Bullock.

Tech’s run in the tournament ended with an 86-75 loss to Missouri in the regional semifinals, but the Red Raiders finished the season as the No. 16 team in the nation despite their early exit.

Myers led the Red Raiders to two more tournament appearances in his nearly 20 seasons as coach, but the team did not record a win in its stay in the expanded 1984-85 and 198586 seasons.

By the end of the 1990-

91 season, Myers finished his coaching career with five Southwest Conference Coach of the Year awards.

James Dickey took over the head coaching job after Myers’ retirement and stayed for 10 seasons.

Along the way, Dickey coached Tech through the last five seasons of the Southwest Conference and coached the first five seasons of the Big 12 era. Under Dickey, Tech went to an NCAA tournament in the 92-93 season, but lost in the first round to St. Johns, 82-67. In the 92-93 season, Tech played its best season with a 30-2 overall finish and spotless 14-0 conference record. As the conference champions, Tech made it to the Sweet 16 with a 74-73 win over Northern Illinois and 92-73 victory over sixth seed North Carolina.

Georgetown prevented the 30-2 Red Raiders to continue in the tournament with a 98-90 win over Tech.

After missing the tournament five straight years, Bob Knight took over the head coaching job and led Tech to the tournament in his first season as coach with a 23-9 overall record.

Knight recorded his first postseason victory as Tech’s coach in 2004 after escaping a matchup against Charlotte by the difference of a 3-pointer, winning 76-73.

Knight’s Red Raiders lost in the second round of the tournament that year.

The next season, Knight recorded his deepest run in the tournament during his time at Tech. Drawing UCLA in the opening round, the Red Raiders defeated UCLA 78-66 behind 28 points from senior guard Ronald Ross, according to Sports-Reference.com.

In the second round against Gonzaga, the Red Raiders let slip a 38-29 halftime lead, but Tech advanced by a field goal with a 71-69 win. A then Big East team, West Virginia, eliminated the Red Raiders from the tournament by winning the Sweet 16 contest 6560. Tech finished the 2005 season 22-11 and No. 24 in the nation.

Knight concluded his final full season as a coach by sending Tech to its last tournament appearance to date. A 21-13 overall record secured Tech a postseason berth, but Boston College made Tech’s trip to the dance a short one. Down 7270 in the final six minutes of the game, Boston College outscored the Red Raiders 12-5 down the stretch to secure the win.

The 2015-16 season surprised the Big 12 and the Red Raiders are now in position to end a nine-year postseason drought. Behind a cast of motivated players and a coach with years of experience and postseason glory, Tech has a reason to enjoy a postseason berth. @DGaytanDT

Cinderella team difficult to choose

March Madness is the time of year when more than 60 million Americans fill out a bracket of who will win the men’s NCAA tournament, according to WalletHub. The tournament is often unpredictable, as highranked teams often fall to lesser-known programs.

It is almost impossible to predict a perfect bracket.

According to WalletHub, there is a one in 9.2 quintillion chance to fill out a perfect bracket.

Grant Read, a freshman agricultural business major from Santo, describes a Cinderella team as a non top-tier team that is not well known to the

general public.

Jake Salyer, a freshman Lubbock native and business management major, has a more specific definition of what a Cinderella team is.

“I would classify a Cinderella team as an eight or nine seed,” Salyer said.

“The team either has to get to the Elite Eight or the Final Four.”

An example of these kinds of teams includes the Davidson team in 2008 that came in to the tournament as a 10 seed. Davidson upset teams including Gonzaga and Wisconsin, with a little-known guard named Stephen Curry, but lost in the Elite Eight to the eventual champion Kansas by two.

According to the NCAA

website, there are four essential ingredients for a Cinderella run in the tournament. The team has to have an elite offense, be able to shoot the three, be at least average on defense and rebound well.

Read said he does not have a specific strategy for picking a Cinderella team during the tournament.

“I sometimes use the eenie-meenie-miny-mo method,” Read said. “I also sometimes flip a coin.”

Salyer said it is hard for someone to pick a single Cinderella team.

“The team could be a small school that most people won’t even know who they are,” Salyer said. “I would also go with the team who has had the most success in the past.”

Read agrees there is not really a way to predict who the Cinderella team will be in March Madness this year, he said.

“What I do is usually pick the team that I am most familiar with and one that has done it in the past,” Read said. “I think that it’s lucky to pick the right Cinderella team.”

This year, though, Read said he thinks it is obvious who the Cinderella team will be.

“Without a doubt,” Read said, “I really think that Texas Tech University will be the Cinderella team this year.”

Tech celebrates Women’s History Month

By EASTON WOLLNEY Staff Writer

Texas Tech celebrated Women’s History Month today by hosting an opening reception for the exhibit “Women Who Shaped Texas Tech” in the Croslin Room of the Library.

The exhibit features artifacts, clothing and photographs from Tech women, Lynn Whitfield, associate archivist for Southwest Collections, said, and has five honorees this year including Anne Lynch, Maxine Fry, Marsha Sharp, Hortense Williams Dixon and Edna Gott.

“I kind of think of women’s history sometimes as our hidden history,” Whitfield said.

The exhibit began three years ago, she said, and will now be an annual exhibit at Tech.

“About three years ago I was trying to build a timeline of women and minorities at Texas Tech and a lot of that stuff you have to dig

for,” Whitfield said. “It’s just not available.”

Whitfield said she went through several older issues of The Daily Toreador to try and find information about women at Texas Tech and made a notable women’s page on the Tech website.

“I think the main objective of the opening reception is to pretty much to get the word out that the library is supporting women’s history,” Whitfield said. “We’re trying to promote women’s history and were trying to make it more visible.”

With her drive and determination, Elizabeth Howard West, elected the first female State Librarian of Texas in 1918 and former Tech librarian, was also honored in the first exhibit and helped the university to receive a separate freestanding library, Whitfield said.

West was able to ring the victory bells when the university found the proper funding for the library, Whitfield said.

Mary Woodward Doak, the dean of women from 1925 to 1945, and Margaret Watson Weeks, dean of the home economics department from 1925 to 1953, were also honored during the first exhibit for Women’s History Month, Whitfield said.

Tech allowed men and women to enroll when it opened in 1923, Whitfield said, and women are an important part of history at the school because both men and women helped build the university into what it is today.

“Men and women built our traditions, helped us build our buildings, our facilities, our programs and taught the next generation,” Whitfield said, “and so that’s one of the reasons why it’s important for women not to get lost in history. We helped found this college.”

Terri Duncan, wife of Chancellor Robert Duncan, gave a speech at the opening reception for the exhibit and said the success of women in history was not always highlighted.

We often hear information about influential male leaders, Duncan said, but do not always hear much information about their wives and the roles that they play.

“If you’re first lady of the president, you hear all about what the president did,” Duncan said, “and you really learn and you start reading about all that the women

Donald Trump fuels Texas voter turnout

This election season has been fueled with surprises.

When Donald Trump announced his candidacy, much of the U.S. was surprised.

But now, he is a frontrunner and seemingly increasing voter turnout.

Last Tuesday, multiple states had their party primary elections, and the GOP primary race continued to heat up.

Texas election officials predicted voter turnout for the primary election could create new records, a c c o r d i n g t o t h e Te x a s Tribune. One of the differences compared to prior election cycles is Texas’ status as an early primary state in this election.

Early voting turnout was uncharacteristically high, according to the Texas Tribune, and more than 1 million Texans voted early in the primaries — with approximately 60 percent of voters

in the 15 counties containing the largest numbers of registered voters turning out to vote in the GOP primaries.

This was also only the second time in history, according to the Texas Tribune, that there was a GOP primary in all 254 counties. There were also approximately twice the number of GOP ballots cast in Texas than in the 2012 election.

“I think most of the action is obviously on the Republican side. I think it’s becoming clear that Trump really is a movement candidate.

That’s the way I view him,” Seth McKee, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science, said.

It does not matter what gaffes he commits or whether his policy positions are closely aligned with typical GOP voters or not, McKee said, because they like him as a strongman candidate who claims to be able to fix their problems.

growing voter turnout on the Republican side by drawing people who normally do not vote to the GOP, he said.

According to the Texas Tribune, about 30 percent of Texas registered voters participated in Republican and Democratic primaries.

“His appeal is so broad,

right? It’s not that he’s killing it with any certain segment of the Republican voting electorate, it’s that he’s winning the plurality of every one of those groups,” McKee said.
