Tadlock builds on Tech baseball history

Texas Tech baseball coach Tim Tadlock began coaching his first baseball team while he was a senior in high school.

Tadlock’s former Little League Baseball coach of his who coached the same team every season for 35 years lost his job and no longer had time to coach the team, so he asked Tadlock to take over.

It was then that Tadlock first realized how much he liked the job, he said.

“I think as far back as then I knew I’d enjoy coaching,” he said. “I really have never felt like it’s ever been work to me.

Obviously, it’s just a lot of fun.”

Since his senior year in college, Tadlock has been both an assistant and head coach for junior college teams and an assistant and recruiting coordinator for Division I programs, all leading up to him becoming the head coach of the Tech baseball team, amassing a 435-127 record during that time and leading the Red Raiders to their first ever College World Series.

Tadlock began his college baseball career as a player at Hill Junior College in Hillsboro, under Rebels coach Gary Benton.

Benton said he had been a high school coach in Tadlock’s area, and the first call Benton made once he got the Hill College job was to Tadlock’s high

school coach.

“I told the coach ‘I want your second baseman, what’s his name?’” Benton said. “He said ‘Tim Tadlock’ and I said, ‘well that’s the guy I want.’”

Tadlock played at Hill College from 1988-89, and Benton said he was the same then as he is now.

Benton said although Tadlock is not loud or outspoken, people still tend to gravitate to him and he does a great job leading them.

“He’s just shown those qualities all along, even as a player,” Benton said.

“He doesn’t ever think that he’s out of a game, even if it’s 7-0, he’s still got a chance to win.”

After two years with the Rebels, Tadlock came to Tech to finish his degree and play under coach Larry Hays, and in 1991 was the starting shortstop on Tech’s first 40-win team.

It was after that ’91 season that Tadlock said he was hit with the sudden realization that his playing career was over.

Benton called again, however, and asked Tadlock if he would like to come back to Hill College as an assistant coach.

Tadlock coached there for three years and then was named head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where Benton said people really began to see what a great coach he was.

“The thing about Tim was, he

learned from all my mistakes,” Benton said, “and then when he got his job at Grayson, he didn’t make those same mistakes.”

After five years at Grayson, where Tadlock recorded the highest winning percentage of any collegiate coach at both two-year and four-year institutions, according to Tech Athletics, he was hired as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma.

During his five years with the Sooners, Tadlock had recruiting classes ranked in the top 25 in the nation by Baseball America three times.

Tadlock said it is important in recruiting to have a staff that has bought in to the same work philosophy, and he has been blessed to have good people around him throughout his career.

“We were getting good players back at Hill Junior College in the ‘90s, and we were getting good players at Grayson in the ‘90s and 2000s,” Tadlock said. “I’ve always felt that I could sit down with people and talk to them about what you’ll do for them, I could get them to come.”

In November 2011, due largely in part to his success as a recruiter, Tadlock was hired away from Oklahoma and made associate head coach at Tech.

Tadlock only spent one season in that position, however, as Tech Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt quickly named him the ninth head coach in

program history.

“Tim Tadlock is known as one of the nation’s best college recruiters,” Hocutt said, according to a previous article in The Daily Toreador. “Tim Tadlock is known as one of the nation’s best teachers of the game, and Tim Tadlock is known as a coach that knows the state of Texas as well as, or better, than anyone else in this profession.”

Tadlock said Hocutt did not have to ask twice before he agreed to take the job, and he was proud to be a part of a program with such a rich history.

“We have a sense of what people have done for the program and have a lot of respect for what people have done for the program in the past,” Tadlock said.

“I just want to try and carry that on and build upon it.”

In his first year at the helm of the Red Raiders, Tadlock orchestrated the second-biggest turnaround in Big 12 Conference history, according to Tech Athletics. After winning only 26 games in 2012, the team won 45 in 2013.

Then in 2014, the Red Raiders went to their first ever College World Series, but Tadlock said he did not feel like it was him who led them there.

“I would tell you that the players took me and took Texas Tech to their first world series,” he said. “At that point in the year, players are making plays.”

the College World Series, the third-year coach of the Red Raiders said he does not see himself leaving any time soon.

“I love it here at Texas Tech,” he

Ticket sales for Rip Griffin Park rising Players discuss walkup song importance

The 2014 season for Texas Tech’s baseball team ended with a series of hallmarks for the program. By the end of the season, Tech won its first NCAA Regional and Super Regional series, sealing its first trip to Omaha, Nebraska, to compete in the College World Series.

As the season opener draws near and Tech looks toward a second College World Series appearance, Tech baseball fans responded to the team’s success last season with a spike in season ticket sales.

At the start of the 2014 season, before the historic World Series run, Tech sold 1,266 season tickets. For the 2015 season, Tech season ticket sales doubled, surpassing 2,400, and officially selling out on Tuesday, making it the first time both football and baseball tickets sold out in one season, according to Tech Athletics.

letic director for ticket operations, said he attributes the rise of season ticket sales to a high retention rate and the program’s success in recent years.

“We had a 94 percent renewal rate from last year which is phenomenal,” Fletcher said. “The ticket sales are going strong. We’re excited about what’s going on.”

Since Tech head coach Tim Tadlock began his tenure at Tech, Fletcher said, baseball ticket sales have been taking an upward trend.

In 2014, Tech baseball’s season attendance ranked 20th in the nation, with 89,000 fans filling up the seats.

Tech’s biggest home game of the season occurred when Tech hosted the Lubbock Super Regional against the College of Charleston.

In only 40 minutes, Tech sold out all of its 4,811 seats for the Super Regional to the massive line of fans waiting to purchase their tickets and Tech’s season ticket holders.

Tech sold out its club, lower and upper reserved seating areas at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park before the start of this season, and only general admission tickets remain available for purchase.

Although the demand for Tech baseball tickets continues to increase, Fletcher said the amount of seats available for students remains the same.

“When we open up a new season, the first thing we do is we put seats on hold for the students,” Fletcher said.

“It’s based on what we have always done every year, so we have 1,000 seats on hold every game.”

The ticket sales, Tadlock said, feed into the excitement of the team and the stands in the park.

“Make no bones about it, every voice and everybody in those stands make a big difference,” Tadlock said. “Lubbock and Rip Griffin Park can be an electric place to watch a baseball game.” ➤➤@DGaytanDT

Some are superstitious about it and some just do it for the fans. Whatever the stance on walkup songs, every baseball player has one and it will be heard throughout Rip Griffin Park multiple times a game.

Texas Tech Assistant Director of Promotions and Fan Engagement Eric Ward is the organizer of walkup songs for the Red Raiders baseball team, and said the most important part of the song is it works for the specific player.

“I think that the walkup song needs to reflect who you are as a person,” he said. “I don’t think there’s any specific genre, but it’s the players that do that best who have good songs.”

Ward said the thought process for the songs begins about a month out from Opening Day when he posts a signup list in the locker room.

Players write down the name of

the song and the artist and what time in the song they would like the track to start and Ward downloads it for the season.

“The pitchers, a lot of them will pick from the beginning just because they have more time,” he said. “Obviously the hitters don’t have that luxury, so they are very specific with theirs.”

Throughout the season, however, Ward said some players will get into a slump and request to change their song.

It differs from player to player he said, but some of the Red Raiders try and change the song in hopes that it will help them return to their best form.

“I don’t really make a rule about it because I understand that baseball players are really superstitious,” he said.

“If they’re in a slump or something, obviously they’ll want to change it.”

Ward said some players, like former Red Raider outfielder Adam Kirsch,

use their ability to change the walkup song more than usual.

Kirsch changed his song six or seven times throughout the course of the 2014 season, Ward said, and would sometimes send in new song requests in the middle of a series.

“He would sometimes do it late at night in the middle of the series which I never do,” Ward said. “We tell them that we will never play something within 24 hours of it being sent in, but they’re usually really good about that.”

On the opposite side of the walkup music coin from Kirsch is senior infielder/catcher Bryant Burleson.

Burleson said he does not worry very much when it comes time to choose a walkup song.

“It’s really not all that important,” he said. “Just something that the fans will like is something that goes through my head. Other than that, it’s just a song.” ➤➤@EvCorder_DT

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania lawmaker whose lawsuit led the NCAA to lift the last of Penn State’s sanctions stemming from the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal said Wednesday the organization misled university officials and that its president, Mark Emmert, should be fired.

Jake Corman, the state Senate’s majority leader, also said that under Emmert the NCAA exceeded its legal authority while it pursued the sanctions in 2012 in a bid to expand its own power.

Corman, whose district includes Penn State’s main campus, released thousands of pages of case documents from the nowsettled lawsuit and said he was sending them to the members of the NCAA’s executive committee.

“If they review it carefully, they will come to the conclusion that there’s a culture problem at the NCAA, and if they truly believe in their core values in their mission statement ... they will determine that Mark Emmert is no longer a credible person to lead this organization,” Corman told a packed conference room in his Pennsylvania Capitol office.

Donald Remy, the chief legal officer of college sports’ governing body, shot back at Corman, accusing him in a statement of seeking to capitalize politically on a settled matter and maintaining that the NCAA is focused on helping victims of child sexual abuse.

Red Raiders look to earn second College World Series trip

After reaching the first ever College World Series in program history, the Texas Tech baseball team has received its highest ranking ever in numerous preseason polls.

The Red Raiders were ranked No. 5 by Baseball America and in the top-15 in almost every other poll, but were picked to finish fourth the Big 12 Conference.

Tech coach Tim Tadlock said this has more to do with the strength of the conference than it has do it with Tech.

Since the Red Raiders boasted a relatively young roster in Omaha, Nebraska, last season, they were able to return 22 players, including 13 out of 16 pitchers, according to a Tech Athletics news release.

Freshman All-American lefthanded pitcher Dylan Dusek, senior left-handed pitcher Cameron Smith and senior righthanded pitcher Dominic Moreno will lead the team on the mound.

2014 National Coach of the Year and third-year coach Tadlock said having the experience of the postseason should help the team stay confident all season long.

“I think we have some guys that have a lot of confidence and that realize we have a chance to have a really good team,” Tadlock said. “At the same time, I think there’s some really good, high character guys. I think it’s OK to believe you’re good.”

Tech also has returned its entire starting infield, led by preseason All-American and preseason Big 12 Player of the Year first baseman Eric Gutierrez.

The junior first baseman was first in the conference in

home runs and RBIs last year while batting .302.

Throughout the preseason, Gutierrez has received multiple conference and national awards, but said he does not pay much attention to those honors as he is already focused on his goals for this season. “(Omaha) was a great experience, but nobody likes to lose, right?” he said. “We are going to try and go back and win it.”

Joining him in the infield is three-year starter and senior shortstop Tim Proudfoot.

The shortstop saw his batting average jump from .233 in his sophomore season to .309 in his junior season. Proudfoot also enters this season second on the Tech career assists in Big 12 play list.

Another three-year starter is senior infielder/catcher Bryant Burleson, who played next to Proudfoot during his whole career as a Red Raider, but is now competing for the starting catcher role and will likely split time at both positions.

“It’s been great,” Burleson said. “Coming up and being the same thing for three years in a row, I wouldn’t say it gets boring, but moving to catcher quite a bit in practice, it’s been fun. It’s a whole new experience and I’ve really enjoyed it.”

The Red Raiders finished last season with a 45-21 overall record and 14-10 record in conference play, fourth in the Big 12.

They claimed the best home field advantage in the conference with a 33-4 record at Rip Griffin Park.

After being picked to finish

fourth in the Big 12 this season, Tadlock said the preseason poll does not hold much value because anyone can beat anyone in the Big 12.

“The Big 12 is a great league.

One through nine, top to bottom,” he said. “Last year our number one team going into the year ended up ninth. There’s definitely no games decided on paper. The games are decided on the field. Everybody in our league brings their best game every day.”

To move up in the conference standings, the Red Raiders must find a way to go through Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Christian, all three of which were ranked above the Red Raiders in the coaches’ poll. Both the Cowboys and the Horned Frogs will have to come to Lubbock for those games.

Tech will welcome TCU to Lubbock on April 2 for the second Big 12 series of the season.

The Horned Frogs will challenge the Red Raiders’ bats, as they led the nation in ERA in 2014. Due to the strength of TCU’s roster, this could be the toughest series for Tech all season.

Later in April, reigning Big 12 champion Oklahoma State will travel to Rip Griffin Park. Tech went 1-2 against the Cowboys in Stillwater last year.

Toward the end of the season, Tech will face in-state rival Texas in Austin. The Red Raiders will be seeking revenge, as the Longhorns handed Tech two out of its four home losses in 2014.

Experience mixed with talent will be the key as Tech has a strong chance to finish near the top of the conference and reach a second-straight College World Series. ➤➤@JeremyK_DT

Music has strong influence on society

W

ithout music, one can only imagine what life would be. Plato once said, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.”

How would we possibly entertain ourselves during the long, boring hours of driving it takes to arrive to our college town? What would we do without the throwback jams people play at social gatherings? What extra motivation would we have without the music in our “Beats” headphones while working out at the gym?

Though these are only t h r e e q u e stions that imply situations where we listen to music, what would we really do witho u t i t ? To be honest, I’m writing this column listening to music at this precise moment.

M u s i c might be one of the most important aspects in almost everyo n e ’s d a i l y life. The self-empowerment and motivation music offers to many is immeasurable.

Many colleagues of mine become bothered when they forget their headphones at home to use while walking from class to class on this large and beautiful campus. Even a roommate of mine drove to the gym, forgot his headphones and drove back home to get them before beginning his workout.

Music is something many cannot live without. It makes complete sense that my friend would take drastic measures to drive all the way home for his headphones, in order to complete his workout while listening to some tunes.

Music is deeply inspiring and has the power to motivate people of all cultures.

“Music doesn’t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music,” Jimi Hendrix said.

Through music, one can reach new goals they’ve never reached before. I think all individuals can agree upon the power music has on our society today.

Want evidence? Walk into the weight room at the Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center and look at how many people have their headphones in while working out — everyone does.

Some may ask, “Why does everyone listen to music at the gym?” From personal experience, I would answer this question stating, “It pumps us up, helping us reach new goals to build strength and to motivate us to push through the soreness.”

Not only does music motivate, it has the power to invoke political change and produce incredible impacts on our society. It is quite extraordinary to learn about the power music has on every aspect of our society. Everyone should take the opportunity to learn about something that has such a drastic impact on everyday life.

could be heard on the cotton fields of the South during times of slavery, with biblical songs that depicted themes of freedom and servitude, such as ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ and ‘Go Down Moses.’”

As we all know, the hardship of being referred to as a piece of property is unimaginable. “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain,” Bob Marley said.

In order to tame the frustration and rage, slaves would look to music as a source of tranquility and comfort. For many, music was the only thing able to comfort them through the bad times.

According to the Postive Health website, “One of the reasons why listening to music is so healing for us is due to the power of musical intervals.

A musical interval is created when one note is played with another note. The interval can be created by playing two notes together, or one after the other.

When two notes are played together the interval has a stronger effect on us.”

“Each music interval creates to a different ratio; this has a balancing effect on the different organs, and on the cells of our bodies. The intervals are musical medicine for our body,” according to the website.

Music is the medicine to our soul. It serves as the healing platform for many across the world today.

In a second aspect, music has the power to connect between cultures and race.

Let’s be honest, most of the successful rap artists today are African-American, yet I have hundreds of white, Hispanic and Indian friends who enjoy rap music. Any type of music can be relevant to people from different races and cultures.

Back in the 1930s, when racial issues contributed to many political upheavals, the movement of the Harlem Renaissance found its impact on society. African-Americans, who were scolded simply for the color of their skin, were the main artists, musicians and poets of the movement at that time.

According to a PBS article, “incorporated jazz and blues attracted whites to Harlem Speakeasies, where interracial couples danced.”

By incorporating jazz and blues, African-American musicians were able to connect with whites through similar interest in music. Music provided clarity when trying to relate to another individual who is different from one.

Throughout history and in society today, music has and is still proving to be one of the most important aspects of creativity, expression and freedom. Billy Joel said, “I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”

Valentine’s Day is big industry in US

F

ebruary is finally here and I couldn’t be more excited.

This month signifies that we are getting closer to Spring Break and warmer spring weather.

February is a short month and the month notoriously known for love.

The origin of Valentine’s Day is intensely historic. A long time ago, a Roman Emperor made a very unfavorable decision to ban marriage for all young Romans. The Roman Empire was in shambles. Single soldiers fought better in war than the soldiers who had families.

Feeling that this decree was unjust, a priest by the name of Valentine defied the ban and performed marriages in secret for young lovers. But as fate would have it, Valentine’s actions were discovered by the Emperor and he was sentenced to death.

It’s very interesting how the holiday we know today came from such an intriguing, historic situation. And this was not the only factor to shape Valentine’s Day. There were a couple of other individuals named Valentine and each one of them has a story.

Today’s man-made holiday is completely business driven. No matter the history or the reasons behind the creation of Valentine’s Day, it is being commercialized and sold to young people on up to the older demographic. The money spent for Valentine’s Day will continue to soar like in previous years.

I’m sure everyone has seen the aisle sections at Wal-Mart or Target filled with different boxes of Valentine’s candy for young kids.

Many can relate to when they were in elementary school. Back then, individuals selected a box or two and addressed them to their classmates. It was a fun ritual, and one that continues to take place today.

In fact, I have recently undergone this fun routine with my son. Not only do people have a wide array to choose from, now some Valentine’s candy includes small prizes.

Leslie Smith Many children are not selective on the items purchased, as long as the candy selected is sweet and sugary. Children want stickers, candy, temporary tattoos or just a little something extra to sweeten the message. And like most everything in life, the better the prize, the more people have to pay.

The number one selling item for Valentine’s Day among the older crowd is red roses. Flowers are a popular item for Valentine’s Day — this event is part of what drives the floral industry.

This particular holiday can make or break a flower shop.

People should consider this, and put themselves in a floral shop owner’s shoes. As a floral shop owner, the majority of your monetary income for the year of 2015 is dependent on a single holiday event. On a normal day, an individual could call or walk into a flower shop and purchase a dozen roses hand arranged in a

Hecklers add spirit to Texas Tech baseball

What started out as a group of friends who loved baseball turned into a staple at Tech’s baseball games through the use of a rubber chicken and hours of research.

Near the on deck at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, a group of Texas Tech baseball fans do their best to make batters lose focus of the action on the baseball diamond and focus more on the action in the fan section.

Although no statistics exist on the effectiveness of the Tech Heckler’s jokes and one-liners, there is no denying they make the stands in the park more interesting.

The group’s beginning dates back to 1988, after El Paso native Chris Snead tried out for the Tech baseball team but didn’t land on the roster. During a game in the 1988 season, Snead sat in the stands and exchanged jokes with Bill Gustafson from Jerseyville, Illinois, who cheered on his son Mike, a former infielder for Tech.

“We just ended up sitting there in the stands together,” Snead said. “Eventually it got to a point where we were having a good time up there. Ultimately it kind of evolved and there were a few more people that sat with us.”

In 1992, the group officially debuted as the Tech Hecklers

once they began wearing T-shirts with the back reading, “Here comes trouble.”

Despite the phrase on the back of the T-shirt, the Hecklers followed a strict set of rules to avoid the label of taunting opponents. Snead even published “The Bleacher Bible,” a book stating the ten rules any heckler must follow to stay in the group.

“There’s a method to the madness,” Snead said. “It’s not just saying a bunch of funny things.

Most of the stuff we did, the most effective stuff we did, most people didn’t hear because it was a one-on-one conversation with a player.”

To join the group, the interested person had to show a true knowledge of baseball and needed someone within the group to ask them to join, since the group did not want any loose cannons representing the Tech Hecklers.

For the Tech Hecklers, heckling is an art. Anybody can scream at an umpire for a missed call or shout anything at an opposing player, but to effectively heckle, thought and research must be put into the lines.

Before home games, Gustafson said, the Tech Hecklers went through media guides to find material they could use during the game.

“If it was a really good team we’d even dig in and find their hometown mascot, their high

school coach’s name,” Gustafson said. “Every now and then you’d find pictures, if it was a small town they’d put pictures of kids sitting on tractors and all that stuff, and boy that was just primo stuff.”

As the group evolved, so did the tools they used to get inside a player’s or coach’s head. Tech fans recognize the Tech Hecklers because of the “kit” they brought to games.

The kit consisted items such as kazoos to play the charge call, scoring cards to grade an opposing players’ defensive plays, a pan to make more noise and the most notable item of the Tech Heckler’s arsenal, a rubber chicken.

The chicken stays with Snead and appears at random times throughout the stretch of a game.

Although some of Tech’s fans believe the chicken symbolizes a rally totem, the chicken serves no particular purpose.

Billy Tiongco, a Houston native who began his involvement with the Tech Hecklers in 1997, said the chicken took on a symbol of its own among the Tech Hecklers.

“It became the symbol of the Heckler and it goes up randomly during certain games,” Tiongco said. “People ask us, ‘are you trying to rally something?’ No, not necessarily, just whenever somebody feels the need, typically Chris, he’ll just throw it up there.”

The Tech Hecklers eventually retired the kit, but the chicken occasionally shows up at games and even made it to the first College World Series appearance of Tech.

Some of the best jokes the Hecklers pulled on opposing teams include showing up to a game wearing a graduation robe and cap when Tech faced Harvard, wearing white overalls to resemble the getup of the Texas A&M yell leaders and singing a song set to the tune of “It’s a small world after all” at a Missouri coach who stood at 5ft 4in.

The Hecklers celebrated Tech’s trip to Omaha, Nebraska, for the College World Series, but for Gustafson, the trip to Omaha was especially important. Sophomore bullpen catcher Brooks Gustafson was part of the Tech team, and is Gustafson’s grandson.

“I like it. I personally like the seams. I throw on the seams so I don’t get blisters as bad or anything like that,” he said. “It really does the same stuff, I think. Maybe getting a little more break on it.”

As for adjustments to his throws, Moseley said they have been minimal with the new ball.

“No, hasn’t been too much (adjusting). In the summer we use balls similar to that,” Moseley said. “It wasn’t a big adjustment at all.”

While trying to reach its secondstraight College World Series, there will be a few changes for the Texas Tech baseball team.

Along with losing some players to the draft, the Red Raiders and the rest of college baseball will be using a new ball.

Junior outfielder Tyler Neslony said from a hitting perspective, he is not concerned about the slight change.

“It’s not going to change the game too much. Balls are flying a little bit further, maybe a couple extra base hits,” he said. “I don’t know if from a pitching standpoint if anything is going to change. I guess the ball is just going to fly a little bit more.”

The ball change is intended to boost offense in college baseball. The new ball will feature flat seams as opposed to raised seams in years past.

Teams will not have to use the new ball during the regular season, according to Baseball America, but

Juror taken off Hernandez trial for personal reasons FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — Another juror was dismissed in the murder trial of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez on Wednesday, marking the second time in two weeks a panelist has been removed from the case.

Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh told jurors after a short session Wednesday morning that they may have noticed another empty seat in the jury box.

“That was for reasons that were entirely personal to that juror,” Garsh said. “It has nothing to do with this case.”

She did not elaborate.

It was the same explanation Garsh gave to jurors last week when she dismissed another juror. In that instance, Garsh said in court out of the jury’s presence that there was evidence the juror had discussed the case in detail and expressed the belief that it would be difficult to convict Hernandez without a murder weapon, which has never been found.

Hernandez is charged in the 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins.

The panel is now made up of 16 jurors, and 12 will ultimately decide Hernandez’s fate. Alternates will be selected randomly immediately before deliberations.

Jury selection in the case took several weeks, and more than 1,100 people were in the jury pool.

Wednesday was the first day back in court since Feb. 5. Jurors spent Friday on a police-escorted motor coach tour of various sites important to the case, including Hernandez’s home and the crime scene.

Neslony said the new ball could possibly affect outfielding more than any other part of the game.

“Usually your first step is back (in the outfield). I guess we are

going to be positioned back a little bit more. Try and take away the big hits,” Neslony said. “Try and keep everything in front.”

With the flat-seamed ball expected to go further on average, Red Raider pitchers may have to slightly adjust their technique.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley said he actually has

Although the group’s size has decreased throughout the years, some of the Tech Hecklers come back to Tech’s home park and focus on having a good time at the game amongst friends.

Tech baseball program’s progress noticed Red Raiders 2014 College World Series appearance culmination of storied baseball history in Lubbock Staff Writer

The recent success of the Texas Tech baseball team has caught the attention of Lubbock, as well as college baseball fans across the nation.

With Opening Day on Friday, the 2015 season tickets have sold out for the first time ever.

After having the most successful season in school history in 2014, Tech coach Tim Tadlock said the increase in encouragement from fans has been great for him and the team to see.

“It’s been a lot of fun visiting with people,” he said. “I know I’ve run into people from anywhere, from the grocery store, gas station, anywhere you go through town. We’re excited about sharing the experience with our fans.”

As the Red Raiders found success on the diamond during the 2014 season, the stands started to fill up more than ever before.

Tech had its three highestattended games since the 2012 renovations to Rip Griffin Park during the 2014 season. The two highest games, both of the Super Regional games, had an attendance of 4,811 fans.

Former Tech coach Larry Hays said the fan support for the team is a huge step for putting the Red Raiders on the national stage.

As the Red Raiders are now focused on Opening Day on Friday, they know former players and coaches are expecting big things from them this year.

A.J. Ramos, Miami Marlins relief pitcher and former Tech pitcher from 2006-2009, said even though he has not been out of the program for long, the elevation of the team is noticeable.

“I’m just extremely proud of how far they’ve come. A World Series is a big deal. I couldn’t brag enough to all my teammates about how that was my college,” Ramos said. “I wore my Tech shirt all the time. Bullpen catchers serve behind the scenes

In order to join the Texas Tech baseball team as bullpen catchers, sophomores Brooks Gustafson and Brody Allen had to declare their careers in college baseball over before they ever started.

As an NCAA rule, players wanting to be team managers must waive their eligibility for any kind of college baseball in order to fill the role, but both

Allen and Gustafson said the decision was easy to make.

“My inability to hit in high school kind of helped me make that decision,” Gustafson said, laughing, “because I didn’t really have any offers to go play after high school so I figured this was my best bet to stay in the game.”

Although both team managers said they started baseball at a young age and continued playing on teams all the way through high school, their experience as catchers is vastly different.

Allen said he spent his whole life up until Tech in the infield, but Gustafson said he started catching at a younger age so he would have a better shot at being able to compete at higher levels.

“My dad played infield and he didn’t get to go play pro ball,” Gustafson said, “so he knew that kind of a possibility to play would be catching.”

Each day, Allen said, the managers get to practice before the rest of the players to get everything set up.

Once pitchers begin arriving, the two will warm them up, catch bullpen sessions and help out in any other way they can.

“We also help the equipment manager when he needs us,” Allen said. “Then just filling in where needed — shagging balls or filling in at first base.”

Both catchers said they enjoy working with every pitcher on the team, but there are some that are harder to catch.

Allen said sophomore Ryan Moseley throws some pitches that are harder for him to handle, and Gustafson said he tries to avoid catching bullpen from junior Matt Custred if possible.

“I’m not scared to take from him, but you’d rather give him to one of the other catchers,” Gustafson said. “Custred, he’s just nasty. Everything he throws is hard and just moves a lot.”

While the pitchers are throwing during practice, Gustafson said, Tech pitching coach Ray Hayward is out there with them critiquing players on how to get better.

During games, however, Hayward is in the dugout and it is only the relief pitchers and bullpen catchers in the bullpen, so Gustafson said he and Allen try to help the pitchers out and point out when they see something is off.

“During the games, while (the pitchers) are warming up out there,” Gustafson said, “if I see things that Hayward has pointed out before, I try to remind them of it.”

Allen and Gustafson both said they would like to continue catching bullpen for a professional team after graduating from Tech.

after college, but Allen said he would move out of the sport if he does not continue catching.

“I’d like to be like a financial adviser,” Allen said, “and do accounting and stuff like that.”

While neither of them will be on the field with the team with the Red Raiders when the first pitch is thrown at 2 p.m. Friday,

both are confident the team will pick up right where it left off last season.

“I think everybody knows that they have to get back on the grind like they did last year,” Gustafson said. “I don’t think they’ll take anything for granted.” ➤➤@EvCorder_DT

Tech announcer brings energy to sporting events

After a successful audition, Gilbert found himself as the announcer for baseball and Lady Raider basketball, he said. He wouldn’t begin announcing for men’s basketball for a few more years.

Scott Lacefield, associate director of athletics communications, said he has known Gilbert since 2010, and they have worked almost every home baseball game together since then.

“He has a really good sports mind,” Lacefield said. “He’s got a great feel for all the different sides of announcing, and being a radio guy like he is gives him a great advantage.”

Lacefield said Gilbert comes to the baseball games knowing he may have to talk for three or more hours. However, Gilbert always brings tremendous energy and effort, and is one of the best in the country at what he does, Lacefield said.

Gilbert is a true Red Raider, Lacefield said, and Tech is fortunate to have an announcer as talented and passionate as Gilbert.

“He’s got so much love and passion for what he does,” Lacefield said. “Everyone around him really soaks in that energy. He’s a blast.”

Gilbert said he doesn’t have a favorite sport he covers, because each is exciting in its own way and he enjoys various aspects of each.

Before the start of every baseball or basketball game, a familiar voice to the fans, the voice of Rick Gilbert, blasts over the loudspeakers and raises excitement for the game.

Since the late 1990s Gilbert has worked for Tech Athletics as an announcer, he said. He is currently the announcer for Tech baseball, basketball and volleyball, does internal PA for football games and fills in for tennis and soccer when needed.

“People don’t know what a rush it is,” Gilbert said, “when you start to announce the teams and you get that response from the crowd. That’s really a neat thing.”

Gilbert has worked in the radio industry for more than 40 years, he said.

He moved from his home state of Ohio to Lubbock in 1979 for a radio job.

Gilbert had always had an interest in sports but had never done anything too serious with sports radio, he said. However, when he was approached about filling in for Gerald Rogers, the announcer for Tech at the time, he didn’t hesitate.

“Then they needed somebody for Tech volleyball,” Gilbert said. “From there, it just evolved, and they said ‘could you fill in here, could you fill in here.’”

Gilbert said he has high expectations for this season, and is looking forward to the packed house in light of baseball season tickets recently selling out for the first time in Tech history.

“It’s gonna be exciting, it’s just gonna be a great season,” Gilbert said. “I look forward to being back in the NCAA tournament with no problem.”

Greg Ovalle, a junior chemical engineering major from San Antonio, has attended baseball and basketball games regularly during his time at Tech.

Ovalle said Gilbert’s announcing is one of his favorite parts of the games.

“When you hear his voice at the start of the games it just really gets you excited and pumped for the game to start,” Ovalle said.

People recognize Gilbert’s voice, Ovalle said, and the games wouldn’t be the same without him.

The people involved with Tech Athletics are the best in the world, he said. He never thought he would be here as long as he has, but can’t imagine being

Track, Field set for Tyson Invitational Little League team stripped of title

Tech track and field coach Wes Kittley said White’s Big 12 honor recognizes her performance and effort in her previous meet.

“She’s pretty special and had a really special weekend when you take the fact that she ran under 23 seconds in the 200 meters,” Kittley said. “That’s the fastest in the world and NCAA right now.”

White’s Big 12 honor makes it the fourth time in the 2015 indoor season a Tech player has earned a Big 12 Athlete of the Week award.

The Texas Tech track and field teams travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to compete in the Tyson Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas Friday and Saturday in the Randall Tyson Track Center.

Eight Big 12 schools, including Tech, travel to the Tyson Invitational.

Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor, Texas Christian, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Kansas State make up Tech’s Big 12 opponents at the meet. In all, Tech faces 29 other schools at the meet from seven different conferences.

Tech senior sprinter Cierra White enters the invitational after earning the Big 12 Indoor Female Co-Athlete of the Week honor, according to a Tech Athletics release.

White’s award marks the first time a Lady Raider earned the award on two occasions in the same indoor track season since 2007, as her first award of

five first-place wins.

After each race, Kittley said, the team takes a rest period to prepare for its next meet.

“We’re in this point now of race and recover,” Kittley said. “We race hard on the weekends and try to get people qualified for nationals because each top-16 in each event is how you go to the indoor championship.”

Tech’s performance in its previous meet moved the Lady Raiders to a No. 12 standing in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The men’s track and field team stayed in the No. 14 ranking, one spot behind Tennessee and one spot ahead of Alabama, two schools competing in the Tyson Invitational.

“I think you’re going to see some really good performances,” Kittley said.

Mountain Ridge Little League, the team from Las Vegas that lost to Jackie Robinson West in the national championship game, will be awarded the title.

Parents were angered by the news, saying their children were being unfairly punished.

“The boys had no inside dealings ... about any borders, and I as a mother had no idea there were any (questions about) boundaries,” said Venisa Green, who was driving her son, Brandon, to school Wednesday when they were “blindsided” by the news as it came over the radio.

“We weren’t involved in anything that could have caused us to be stripped of our championship,” said Brandon, appearing at a news conference with his mother.

Venisa Green said the move was especially disheartening because the team was part of efforts to keep children safe and prepare them for college in a community better known for gangs and drugs than any kind of achievement.

“What would you have us do, Little League, for them to be killed on the streets of Chicago?” she asked.

She wondered if the fact that the players were black had any role in the ruling, something that the Rev. Jesse Jackson and others questioned as well.

“Is this about boundaries or race?” Jackson asked.

Jackson did not discuss whether he blamed any league officials for

what had happened, but in Washington, White House spokesman Josh Earnest suggested that it was the adults who let down the boys.

“The fact is, you know, some dirty dealing by some adults doesn’t take anything away from the accomplishments of those young men,” he said.

It was a stunning end to a story that began last summer as the team marched through the Little League tournament. Their odyssey ended with a loss to South Korea in the world championship game in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

For days, Chicago was enthralled by the story, in large part because the team was from the city’s South Side, an area that has a reputation in much of the country for being synonymous with crime and gun violence. They were part of one of the most heartwarming World Series in Little League history, with the country rooting for Jackie Robinson West and a team from Philadelphia that had Mo’ne Davis, a star pitcher who was the first girl to appear in the series for a U.S. team since 2004.

When the Chicago team returned home, the boys were treated as conquering heroes. Thousands of people lined city streets to catch a glimpse of them as they were paraded by bus from their home field to a downtown park.

The team was treated to a trip to a major league World Series game in San Francisco and then a visit with President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at the White House.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Little League team that captured the attention of the nation and the hearts of its hometown was stripped of its national title Wednesday after an investigation revealed that team officials had falsified boundaries so they could add ineligible players to the roster.

Only last summer, the all-black Jackie Robinson West team was the toast of Chicago and was honored with trips to San Francisco and to the White House.

But the sport’s governing body announced that team officials had engaged in a Little League version of political gerrymandering.

Instead of politicians redrawing district maps to pick up votes, it was local league officials who changed the boundaries that determined where players must live. And after learning that their scheme had been exposed, they scrambled to convince surrounding leagues to go along with what they had done.

“This is so heartbreaking,” said Stephen D. Keener, president and CEO of Little League International. “It is a sad day for a bunch of kids who we have come to really like ... who did nothing wrong.” But “we cannot tolerate the actions of some of the adults involved here.”

The organization suspended the manager, Darold Butler, and suspended the team from Little League tournament play until the local league’s president and treasurer have been replaced. A district official who is believed to have helped change the boundaries was also removed.
