The process for selecting the 2018-2019 Masked Rider has begun. Leading up to the Transferring of the Reins event, there will be a series of interviews and tryout sessions beginning with an information session at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Student Union Building’s Masked Rider Room. The official Transferring of the Reins and the public announcement will occur on Friday, April 20. There are several qualifications prospective Masked Riders must meet before beginning the tryout process, according to the Spirit Program page of the Tech website. The candidates must be enrolled in Tech for Spring 2018, have at least 45 credit hours, undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 hours, graduate students 9 hours, must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, considerable equestrian experience, graduation cannot occur before May 2019 and several other qualifications. After meeting these qualifications, candidates must also pass a written exam and complete a preliminary application before moving on to the tryout process, according to the website. After complet ing a tryout with Fearless Champion, the Masked Rider’s horse, the candidate must also complete a portion of the tryout in which they will drive the Masked Rider ’s van and Fearless Champion’s trailer. If these steps are completed to judges’ satisfaction, the candidate will continue on to the interview session, according to the website. Following the interview session, the judges will make their selection for the 2018-2019 Masked Rider.
