Change in the building custom in Granvin, from laft in ”really old times” to gates took over around 1800. Another type of building that is special to Voss and Granvin, which there are also few of, are barns with timber hay and grain quarries and with threshing floor in the middle. Graven Fiskeriforening was founded.

One product that we take for granted today, but if possible was even more vital in the past, was salt. City names and written sources tell that salt was extracted from fjord water (common salt) in Hardanger.

Granvin can offer a long and varied history when it comes to transport. Both by virtue of its own industrial production, tourism, and Granvin’s location as a link between the neighboring villages means in sum that the contact both between the village team in Granvin and beyond has been large and varied The road through Skjervet is mentioned in sources from the middle ageand together with the road that goes from Folkedal, up the valley and on towards Voss.

According to stories, this was the path Olav Haraldsson used when he was to christianize people in Voss in 1023.

was its own port both in middel ages and in 1647, as it stands of the taxable tram. It tells a story about power and affluence. Granvin priest area, which also includes Ulvik, was separated from Kinsarvik as it’s own priest-area in 1608.

Bedrock

Granvin

Ulvik was main parish in 1858, and then Granvin was a parish in the new Ulvik parish. Granvin was separated as its own municipality in 1891. At the municipal regulation in 1964, the farms Lussand, Beggevik, Naustvik, Håstabbe and Kvanndal were transferred to Granvin from Ullensvang.

Forestery and agriculture

Eidfjord was a part of the parish debt from 1688. Then Granvin (Graven) included the three parishes Granvin, Ulvik and Eidfjord.

Then there was a Lensmann for whole Graven shipwrecked (Ulvik, Granvin,Eidfjord), which later belonged to Ulvik county - man’s district in the 19th century. There are good farms and there are old farms in this one municipality; farms with good forest.

Cultural heritage

Granvin parish had its own Lensmann until 1689.

What and who is Granvin? » Some point out that it is important ”that the inhabitants are involved in the restructuring phase so that it was not” everything was better before ”mentality”. ”Realizing that they are part of a larger municipality and that not everything can be exactly as before.”

Weaving urban carpet Granvin is a small town located in the west of Norway. In the inner most of Hardangerfjorden. Granvin has a strong connection to the Hardangeridentity, and is still practicing the traditions of handcraft in food, drinks, embroidery, agriculture, textiles and pattern. The town of Granvin is 20 minutes from Voss and 1,5 hours from Bergen. In a time where we located our selves after minutes and hours, and not by the length in kilometers, the measurement of a distance is to move from A to B at the fasts possible way. One can say that time is moving faster now than in the past. It took us two days to walk from Voss to Granvin (11,1 hours) and it took us 15 minutes to take the bus back. On the way back it felt like going into a time capsule and the distance became really clear to us and how evolutionary pace between A to B has become. Hardangerbana was built to transport gods from Granvin, that had a seafront, to Voss that was inland, but it was also beneficial for the persons living in Granvin. Through the walk we randomly met three people that where still practicing the handcraft and identity from Hardanger. They have strongly inspired us in our thoughts. We want to make a place in Granvin that will benefit the people living there. Therefore we are focusing on the main street that goes through Granvin center and will make this a better place. The main intention of the project is weave urban life and nature together, and create a common shelter with for several and shifting programs. A woven urban carpet that slows down traffic and create connections across spaces. By shifting textures one can orient one self based on the added elements in the new urban terrain. We have opened up the former library, kept the structure of it, establishing an open common space - like a station. It functions as a bus stop, communal kitchen, a place for gatherings and festivities, as well as public toilets. Wherest it used to be the sea-front that was the main place for enconters, and the main transportation hub in Granvin, it is now moved to the former library, in the midst of Granvins urban carpet. 23
