Welcome to the twelfth edition of Top Stock, an issue that
WORDS FROM THE
marks the end of our third year as a publication. As I write this, I am looking over our online readership statistics for our past issues, which total over 25,000 reads – It is interesting to see Top Stock is making its way not only across Canada, but into the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom in online form. Though I still primarily see Top Stock as a vehicle to reach Canadian Breeders, it is somewhat amazing to see it also represents Canadian agriculture on an international scale. As Top Stock evolves, this will be the first issue that does not contain the writing of Piper Whelan, our go-to wordsmith for our past editions. Although I am sad to be saying goodbye, her articles helped develop the tone and character of the magazine and gave us a standard to work towards. Thanks for everything, Piper – and enjoy your new post at the Canadian Cattlemen. With that, we have welcomed the talents of two new writers: Jeff Gaye caught up with the exhibitors of the the most celebrated champions of the fall show-run, Jayden Payne (and his first-ever Limousin to win the Agribition & Farmfair Supreme banners); and Tyler Bullick (and his double Supreme winning Charolais cow) on page 62. With this show becoming more and more competitive every year, these wins are once-in-a-lifetime and we are proud to showcase their moment in the sun. We have also chosen to interview two elite youth that you will, no doubt, find back in the show ring this spring and summer. Kord Phillips, of Kay-R Cattle (page 16), and Shelby Evans of Horseshoe-E Charolais (page 22) talk to Emily Ritchie about the work ethic that growing up in the cattle industry instills – their motto could be “Do it with passion, or not at all!” It is exciting to see youth of their calibre interested in returning to agriculture. As always, we have plans to be at most of this spring’s events. If you are a show organizer, please remember that we would love to provide free results coverage for your event. Junior Associations are also welcome to use our ‘Junior News’ section for announcements – this is absolutely free and a great way to reach youth of all breeds. A whopping 74% of our readership is between the ages of 18 and 44, so the chances that your announcement will reach its target market is very good! Our next issue will be published in conjunction with Calgary Stampede and Summer Synergy. The value of good pictures of your calendar year calves cannot be over-sold when it comes to self-promotion so we encourage advertisers to start planning your advertising as early as possible. We would love to assist you, so please talk to any of our representatives to book your ads by June 11. We hope you enjoy this issue – See you at the Jackpots! – Katie Songer, Editor

WORDS BY EMILY RITCHIE
Kord Phillips has his eyes on the prize – and the work ethic to get there.
"The ability to make my own decisions, and do my own thing has really helped keep me engaged on the farm."
016
here is no end to learning for Kord Phillips of Waskatenau, Alberta. The grade 11 student has already discovered the need for ongoing education in the agricultural world. Along side his parents, Kasey and Arlana, Grandfather, Clinton and sister Peri, Kord makes up part of Kay-R Land and Cattle Ltd. The operation reached its Centennial back in 2013, and is still going strong today. Kord is the 5th generation on the mixed farming operation. In conjunction with their 150-head heard of purebred Charolais, the family also runs a 6000acre grain farming operation. Along side his family, Kord also finds value in taking initiative to begin developing his own operation. He currently raises purebred Charolais, Angus, and club calves on the side as his own business. “The ability to make my own decisions, and do my own thing has really helped to keep me engaged on the farm” Phillips says. Kord also plays a large roll in selecting bulls during AI season for his family’s herd, which allows him to have a more engaged roll in the family business. Phillips has already seen success within his own operation in the last few years. Although he has a soft spot in his heart for all the animals he has shown, two bring him a particular amount of pride. Clyde and Carlie, maternal siblings

Kord raised out of his very first 4-H project brought him success in and out of the show ring. “That 4-H project was good to me,” Phillips explains. “I have bred her to both purebred and club calf bulls over the years. She really allowed me to experiment and grow.” In the spring of 2017, Clyde won the steer show at Making Champions, judged by Kirk Stierwalt. “I have learned a lot from Kirk at clinics over the years, and it was really neat to win a show with an animal I bred that was judged by him,” expresses Kord. Success is driven by continued learning and experience in Kord’s eyes. With his sights set on a post secondary education in Agri Business, Phillips knows his journey to play a vital role in his family farm does not stop at the success of his show animals. “I am interested in a few different schools.” Phillips begins. “I’d like to attend Lakeland College in Vermillion, or potentially somewhere in the States.” Kord’s Uncle whom lives in Texas introduced him to
018
the campus at Texas A&M during a family vacation. “I am also interested in Kansas State University, or potentially somewhere in Iowa.” Although his sights are set high, all roads lead home for the young producer. His aspirations to return to the family farm link closely with his current lifestyle. “Everything I do on the farm on a daily basis, prepares me for the future,” Kord explains. “Living on the farm provides me with the opportunity to spend time outdoors, and learn important skills, like Public Speaking through 4-H.” Kord was a member of 4-H 7 years. Through his commitment to the organization, he was recently able to achieve his Gold Medallion for participation at a Club and District levels. “I am not currently in 4-H this year due to the time commitments that school and hockey both demand, but I do value my time spent in 4-H.” In true Charolais fashion, Kord’s favorite show has historically been the CCYA Junior Show. “I’ve met my best friends
Top Stock Magazine / Spring 2018
through junior shows,” Kord explains. “Between the art, essay and photography competitions, it is more than just your traditional showmanship and confirmation show.” This past fall however, Kord also experienced a different honour in the show ring. Kord and his homebred heifer Maisey were dubbed winners of the Elaine Hiller Memorial Jackpot show at Farmfair International. “I had a strong relationship with Elaine,” Kord began. “It meant a lot to me to win that championship. It’s a very special memory for me.” Elaine touched the lives of many young showman, like Kord. Her memory lives on through the capable young cattle producers who lead the industry into the future.

Kord knows that it takes hard work in all aspects of agriculture to be successful “You can’t just expect to do well with a project,” Phillips begins. “You’ve got to work with them and put the hours in, in order to be successful.” Kord’s dedication to his education, his business and his extra curriculars, such as hockey, don’t detract from the time and effort he puts in to the family operation over all. His work ethic and drive are clearly reflected in his successes, both in and out of the showring. “As farmers and ranchers, we take pride in what we raise and produce. Agriculture is a great industry to be apart of, and the people are a big part of that.”

Shelby Evans passion for cattle has set her path, in and out of the show ring.
WORDS BY EMILY RITCHIE
20
year old Shelby Evans sees agriculture through a crisp lens. Her passion for livestock, and ag related communications keep her engaged in the ag industry in many ways. Along with her parents, Layne and Paula, and sisters Shae-Lynn and Calina, she plays an integral role in Horseshoe E Charolais. Stationed near Kenaston, Saskatchewan, her family calves out approximately 380 head each year, 200 of which are purebred Charolais. Shelby is also no stranger to the cattle show world – Horseshoe E Charolais is a 3rd generation operation with a long record in the show ring. Shelby’s passion for showing cattle began, like many, at Agribition. “It all started with annual trips to Agribition. I am 20 years old now and I haven’t missed one,” she explains. By the age of 11, Shelby was taking time off school each year, during the fall, to get her hands in the mix. All three of the Evans girls have been heavily involved in the preparation and display of their show string. Rather than hiring on others in the industry to fit and

show the Horseshoe E cattle, Shelby, ShaeLynn and Calina learned. Shelby hasn’t gone without having a few favorites in her string over the years. LAE Adelita Rose stands out in Shelby’s mind as one of those. “I showed her at the Charolais Junior National show as a bred heifer.” Evans explains. “She was one I picked out as a calf, and now I am showing her half sister.” LAE Caroline is another that holds a special place in Shelby’s heart. “She was a lot bigger than the moderate sized cattle you see in the ring these days. I showed her in 2016 as a bred heifer and she was 1860lbs at Agribition. With all that size, she was still structurally sound and a bit of a throw back to the more traditional Charolais we used to see.” As far as show ring role models go, Shelby didn’t need to look too far past her own doorstep to find one. Growing up, she gained a lot of her passion, expertise and skill from watching her older sister, Shae-Lynn. “Watching her win the aggregates at the Junior Charolais shows while being one of the

youngest competitors, made me strive to be on her level” Shelby highlighted. Peer support, and family support plays a large role in her love for the show ring today. Becoming increasingly involved in not only the preparation prior to the show, but the day of work has been a big part of Shelby’s life. From a young age, she learned the value of hard work and preparedness, skills that transfer to many different aspects of her life. “Being involved in cattle has taught me a lot about hard work and being prepared for things ahead of time.” Evans explains. “It has helped me a lot when it comes to other aspects of my life, including school.” Now, as a 3rd year Agribusiness Student at the University of Saskatchewan, Shelby has her eyes set on the future. “I think we are at a challenging time, for the agriculture industry.” Evans explains. “Keeping up with consumer demands is challenging,

but I think Canada is in a good position to do so.” With a keen interest in marketing, and photography, Shelby has her eyes set on bridging the gap between producers and consumers. Her experiences showing cattle and moving through the ranks in 4-H played a big roll in her appreciation for communications excellence. Armed with her father’s wisdom, and a good camera, Shelby sees opportunity in changing the approach often taken when speaking with consumers. “We don’t want to overwhelm consumers with information and education. I think we need to find a happy medium when it comes to delivering information.” Evans also acts as a strong young leader in the show cattle world. breeding and showing Charolais cattle. The CCYA has many programs available to help young people acquire quality genetics. Evans is also looking forward to the up coming CCYA National Show. Along with Helge and Candace By, Shelby is currently working to develop the very first International Program. “This year at our national show, we are excited to be hosting groups from around the world.” Evans explains. “It will be very exciting to provide those delegates the opportunity to show – they will learn from us and we will learn from them!” Participating countries including Ireland, the United States, New Zealand, and Estonia are eligible to send 2 delegates to the first event of it’s kind in Brandon, MB, July 25-28, 2018.

Delegates apply to attend through their national boards and are selected based upon attendance in past national Charolais events. “CCYA’s roll in the event this year is figuring out how to adapt our competitions so that International Delegates are able to participate,” Evans explains. Shelby’s work ethic and positive mindset have allowed her to pursue agriculture and cattle production fearlessly. Her experiences in and out of the show ring have taught her a lot about perseverance, work ethic and pride. “If I were to give advice to someone getting into the show cattle world, I would say work hard and don’t give up. There is pride to be found in the work, as much as there is in the results.”

The dairy, pork and poultry industries have all implemented some type of Quality Assurance program similar to ours. Retailers and consumers are looking for it. This is our opportunity to use an industry created program to enhance our social license to produce beef, and to increase consumer trust. There is strong potential to increase local consumption and global exports of Canadian beef. VBP+ validates sustainable production practices, onfarm. Let’s show the world why Canadian beef is the safest, highest quality protein product on the planet!
WANT TO BECOME REGISTERED WITH THE VBP+ PROGRAM? VBP+ REGISTRATION STEPS •
you need records as per the Must Do’s in the VBP+ Producer Manual and complete the VBP+ training (workshop or online)
•
then contact your provincial VBP+ office to request a validation audit
•
we will help prepare you for the audit, ensuring that you understand our program and that you are ready (Producer Checklist & SelfAssessment)
•
VBP+ IS A NATIONAL PROGRAM RECOGNIZED BY THE CFIA
then the auditor will connect with you directly to schedule the on-farm audit
•
Audits Rates in SK: $650/cow-calf & $850/feedlot

“He always showed himself off, always had his head real high and strutted around.” Canadian Impact has some full siblings, including two brothers and a sister who have been sold, and two other sisters who are still in the Greenwood program. “They're just beautiful, they’re a couple of our top young cows,” Payne said. But of all the calves, Canadian Impact was number one. “Yeah, I was always excited about him, even when he was a young calf out on pasture. He was always my pick,” Payne said. There was a couple other brothers to him that we always kind of debated about who's going to be the best one, which one was our favorite. But he was always my top pick.” The young bull’s show career started with a successful season in 2015, which was when Robbie Garner of Nordal Limousin and Angus bought a half share. Payne and the Greenwood crew showed him through 2016, and then he had his triumphant show season last year as Champion Limousin bull at Stockade Roundup and Supreme Champion at Farmfair and Agribition. Greenwood is reaping the benefits of Canadian Impact’s success.

"It was a feeling I’ll never forget. It’s so rewarding and exciting." “It's huge,” Payne said. “The publicity we got out of it, and the advertising on that view of things, it's been pretty unreal. The amount of new people from all breeds that we've met and had ask about the bull and our breeding program, or even commercial people asking about sons for sale. Being that he is the first Limousin animal to ever win one of the major Supremes in western Canada was a pretty big deal, and it's caused a lot of excitement for the breed in and around our program.”

And his calves are already showing that they carry on Canadian Impact’s winning ways. He's been used heavily in the Limousin breed and he's worked well. One heifer calf won the Toronto Royal Winter Fair reserve overall Limousin female, and a bull calf was reserve grand champion bull at Brandon Fall Fair. And at Agribition one of his sons was reserve champion to him. “I think he's going to produce some real showy cattle and continue to promote the Limousin breed

on that level,” Payne said. “And then commercially, the sons are just so big and powerful. “They've got a lot of growth about them and they weigh up heavy. Our bull customers that have been coming to the farm have been picking out his sons pretty easily.” Greenwood isn’t making any more of Canadian Impact’s semen available, opting instead to focus on the offspring. They sold a lot of semen when he was just a year old, and then they and Garner decided not to sell any more “just so it didn't get too overpopulated,” Payne says. Now they’re promoting the son that was reserve at Agribition, and they have bull calves for sale off of him. “Over the next couple of years we'll promote his daughters pretty heavily and try and sell some of them,” he said. In cattle breeding, and in the show ring, there’s no such thing as an overnight success. The Greenwood program has been built over many years, and Payne has shown in a lot of events before bringing a bull like Canadian Impact before the judges. He and the crew have been showing for “the past ten or a dozen years, and before that for my parents,” he said. But there was a special feeling as this season started, and especially leading up to Agribition. “We were pretty excited to bring him out. We'd been working on him, we'd been rinsing him every day and getting him ready for a couple months, and we were excited to get him out and show him off. “But it’s always kind of nerve-racking and exciting same time getting him fit up and ready to go to the ring for Supreme,” he said. When he made the cut to be judged in the final ten, Payne was already feeling some satisfaction. But when the judge slapped Canadian Impact’s back, “it was amazing.” “It was a feeling I’ll never forget,” he said. “It’s so rewarding and exciting. I still catch myself watching the video from it, and it's still hard to believe that it's finally happened. I don't even know how to explain it, it's a feeling like I've never had before.” And what does he see in himself when he watches the video? “I’m seeing pictures of myself being about as excited as I've ever gotten.” Right The Greenwood crew prepares Canadian Impact for the Farmfair Supreme show. ©© Emily Hurst Photography 066

Prairie Cove locks down Supreme Champion Female
"RBC was like the cherry on top of the sundae. You don't plan on winning those things. You get a good one, and then have the judges line up, and it just works out sometimes or it doesn't." The selection of the RBC Supreme Champion Female at Canadian Western Agribition in November had all the tension of overtime in game seven of a Stanley Cup final. And like the Cup final, it’s hard enough just to get there. Prairie Cove Charolais, from Bowden, Alberta, has been breeding for fifty years and across three generations of the Bullick family. Their cow PZC Lily 5013 ET reached CWA after big wins in Brandon and Edmonton. In Regina they were up against 35 other champion females representing the very best stock in North America. “I mean that's the best of the best. All the champions from all over Canada and the United States come there,” said Prairie Top Stock Magazine / Spring 2018

Cove’s Tyler Bullick. “You go in feeling good about yourself because you've got good cattle, but you never know if you're going to win or not. “That's awfully deep water there.” The excitement built as Lily, exhibited with her daughter Miss Prairie Cove 716E, made the cut for the top ten. But the final judging was excruciating for Bullick. “You're just kind of waiting to see if the judge is going to come down and slap you,” he said. “She worked her way down, and we were the ninth one out of ten in line so we're kind of towards the back." “So she walked all the way from the front, all the way to the back, made a full circle around them all. And then she came all the way back down to us and slapped us.” It was an exhilarating moment for Bullick and his fiancée Justine Schneider, who was handling the calf. Bullick still gets excited talking about it. “Oh man, it was very good!” he said. “We were awfully excited. You never plan for it, but geez it feels awfully good when you do get lucky enough to win it. It was very exciting with my mom and dad there and Justine showing the calf.” The Bullicks went to the U.S. in the summer of 2015 to look at heifers, and were impressed when they first saw Lily in Minnesota. They went back in October, and they still loved what they saw, so they bought her. Top Stock Magazine / Spring 2018

They flushed her before moving her to the ranch. “Kind of a rare thing to do with a calf perhaps, but we wanted to try and see if we get some of her genetics,” Bullick said. Miss Prairie Cove was born in the spring, and Lily also has a bull calf on a recip. The heifer was sold at Agribition, and the bull sold at the ranch’s bull sale in late February. Bullick says Lily is “just made really nice.” She has a long body, “she's really good over the top of her hip and into her tailhead. She’s just got a great back leg.” A great heifer doesn’t always turn into a great cow, but Lily matured beautifully. On top of her other characteristics, Bullick said she has a perfect udder. Lily’s sire is Firewater, who has sired many champions. Her mother is Miss Impressive 0641,
“the most famous Charolais cow in the business” according to Bullick, having raised over $2 million worth of progeny. And Lily has full brothers and sisters that have won national championships in the United States. She has shown that she passes on her winning characteristics. Bullick says Miss Prairie Cove 716E was special from the day she was born. “Not all of the calves look like that right away. So she was real special and attractive when she was first born,” he said. This made the show season especially exciting for Bullick, Schneider and the Prairie Cove crew. “It gives you thoughts that you might be able to show her and do well with her, especially when the calf just kept coming and doing well,” Bullick said.

They weren’t sure what to expect when they went to Brandon, but the win there gave their confidence a boost. After the Supreme Championship win in Edmonton, Bullick says, “you think you're doing pretty good." “Then at RBC it was like the cherry on top of the sundae. You don't plan on winning those things. You get a good one, and then have the judges line up, and it just works out sometimes or it doesn't.” The winning difference might have been that perfect udder. Bullick remembers looking at the other cattle, and comparing how their breed characteristics stacked up against Lily as a model of the Charolais cow. “We had to go up against those Angus cattle. Their breed characteristics are very good udders and they look a little more feminine,” he said. But his cow-calf pair showed the Charolais traits strongly too. “Our calf was just very big and powerful with lots of performance. So the calf was good for her breed. And then the cow, obviously, she has lots of Charolais characteristics as well. But then she

“I'd like to see her lead the way as a Charolais cow. We're very proud to own her, but it's also a big win for the Charolais breed in general." Above Lily makes her way to the top 5 line-up at Farmfair, on her way to her first Supreme win last fall. ©© Show Champions

brand new stuff,” Bullick said. They’ll use some of the
The win has bumped Prairie Cove to a new level. People have been calling from as far away as Norway, Australia and South Africa asking about genetics. When the Bullicks go to the U.S., they are recognized and congratulated, and people are keen to talk to them.
“She'll be used on a large cross-section of bulls just
Lily will be a cornerstone of the Prairie Cove program, Bullick says. “She's a donor cow here now so she'll just stay open next year. She's going to calve here in March and then we'll just keep her open and we'll just continue to flush her all year. “We'll get as many offspring as we possibly can out of her. She'll be a large part of the program, she'll lead the way. She's kind of what we'll build around,” he said. She's a cow that Prairie Cove thinks can be bred in a number of different ways. “We'll use some semen that's a little harder to find, a little rarer. We'll use some older semen and then we'll use some of the

most popular bulls, and some others from the U.S. because she's so good, I think she can work on many different crosses. And we'll flush her a club calf. So she'll have some cross-bred calves and show cattle and stuff like that.” While Lily and her progeny are earning their place in the show ring and in breeding programs, Bullick says they will help boost the Charolais impact on the beef industry as a whole. “I'd like to see her lead the way as a Charolais cow. We're very proud to own her, but it's also a big win for the Charolais breed in general,” he said. “She's won two Supremes, that's never been done by the same cow. So I think she can be a leader in her field, lead the way for the Charolais cattle and put us on the map a little bit."
