MAGSAFE

The latest iPhones (from iPhone 12 and newer) are nowadays charged with an Magsafe charger, instead of a regular cable, but what exactly is Magsafe?

Since 2006, Magsafe is used in the chargers of Apple’s® Macbooks. These laptops have a magnetic charger that keeps them securely in place, but if someone pulls on the cable (for example by getting stuck behind the cord), the Macbook doesn’t fall, but it will be detached from the cable. Nowadays this technique is not only used in Macbooks, but also in the latest iPhones.

On the back of the iPhone 12 (and up), several magnets are placed. This keeps the charger connected to the phone, without actually having to attach it. Because the magnet is placed around the wireless charging point of the phone, it ensures that the charger always will be in the right place when charging and this will ensure that the phone is charged much more efficiently than charging it wirelessly without the use of Magsafe. These chargers also support up to 15W power and are therefore seen as fast chargers.
