VOLUME XXV
25th Anniversary Bull Sale
Welcome,
It’s with the utmost excitement and gratitude to be celebrating 25 years of bull sales with some of the most astute cattlemen across the country. To say the least, it has not been perfect. But I am proud to say that our greatest strength at Topp Herefords is having the ability, calmness and perseverance to build off what is not working to create a better tomorrow. Many of our original clients are still with us today because they also saw the vision that working together was more sustainable than blazing a path alone. I can honestly say with tremendous pride that the TH calf marketing programs, including the TH Pitz Heifer Development program, rival some of the best in the country. They are reliable year in and year out, despite the ebb and flow of the cattle market. From the rancher to the feeder to the packer, I would say that all segments we work with today understand the balance of profitability throughout the supply chain. It is, without question, that balance throughout the entire supply chain that will secure all of us shared, continued success.
The genetics at Topp Herefords have continually evolved over the past 25 years in both quality and volume. As I analyze the 2025 offering, it is truly humbling to witness the very consistent set of 260 bulls from one end to the other. In the cow herd I see the same consistency in udder type, soundness and efficiency. It’s very simple. We don’t keep females around that can’t carry their worth – you’re very good or you leave the system.
On February 14th we invite you to evaluate one of the most influential sets of Topp Herefords genetics assembled to date. The confidence you have in the TH program has driven our team to set the bar higher and higher, year after year.
We encourage you to attend our annual Cattlemen’s Banquet the night before the sale. The event starts at 3:30 pm at the Chieftain in Carrington. There will be small group meetings with cattle buyers, plus one on animal health and one on risk management. The Cattlemen’s Banquet is certain to open up opportunities that will enhance your bottom line.
We look forward to seeing you!

TOPP HEREFORDS A COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO GENETIC
EXCELLENCE
In today’s world, cattle producers have more tools available than ever before to enhance the profitability of their operation. Theoretically, one can sort out their next herd bull while sitting in the comfort of their office in front of a computer. Genomic testing and EPDs are powerful tools that, used in the proper context, can enhance your final product. However, at Topp Herefords we feel that it is only a piece of a very simple puzzle that, at times, is made far too complex.
The Fundamentals
The cow herd at Topp Herefords is built on a foundation of four core values: udder quality, foot quality/soundness, fertility and pounds. The structure by which we analyze these traits may be called oldfashioned by some. However, the process is real and exceptionally ruthless.
Udder quality is determined at calving time by a simple 1-2 rating system. A 1 is great and a 2 is cull. Soundness is determined during spring vaccination season. A female with a cracked foot, bad joints, poor disposition or hard doing is sorted off and not even bred. Fertility sorts itself out quickly with a 45-day breeding season. Last but not least, pounds weaned. If they don’t bring in a heavy calf, there is a pretty good chance she won’t be calving here next spring.
Ratios
A ratio is the performance of an individual animal within their contemporary group, with 100 being the group average. While we fully understand that ratios do not measure performance across
operations, they are still one of the biggest factors in determining how our females are mated or when selecting genetics to bring into our operation. For example, a dam’s production ratios are the average of the performance of her calves over time. If a cow consistently produces calves that ratio below 100 on birth weight, but ratio above 100 in weaning and yearling, that’s sound predictability that we refuse to ignore.
To ensure the quality and integrity of the ratios and EPDs, we put all of the year’s calves together in the data set and the calves are separated at the AHA only by age and sex. Not all programs are equal in this regard.
EPDs
Finally, EPDs and DNA enter the equation. EPD’s allow us to compare the potential genetic value of a bull or cow relative to the breed as a whole. We take DNA seriously and put our money where our mouth is: we have been DNA testing our entire calf crop since 2013 and continue to do so. Our number one goal is to steadily drive positive change, reduce variability and consistently improve our genetics program. We combine critical fundamentals, ratios, EPDs and DNA testing for a designed result that fosters predictability.
Genetic Excellence
At Topp Herefords we bring all of the available tools together with experience, disciplined selection, and sound fundamentals to deliver you consistent, predictable, premium-quality Hereford genetics.
We want to improve the profitability of your
ranch. —Ryan Topp
Improving Your Profitability
Our primary purpose is to provide you a consistent source of premium Hereford genetics, but we take it a step further. We believe that a true Seedstock operation’s responsibility is to develop genetics and systems that ultimately help drive the beef industry forward. Therefore, our success is measured largely by our contribution to the sustainability of our commercial cow-calf customers. We have been working diligently to create a multi-layer system that helps improve the health and profitability of your operation.
There is Power in Choice
There are proven strategies the generations before us have successfully utilized. Still, looking beyond the box that we are accustomed to can help us make optimal decisions. Having choices is transformative. By diversifying your portfolio you strengthen your position and create a marketing strategy customized for your particular operation.
Develop Your Financial Strategy
Cattle producers are used to gambling. We play the market, bet our livelihood on our ability to catch the market at its high, and then take what we get. But markets aren’t always predictable. There are multiple tools available to help you manage risk, strengthen your marketing strategies and help improve your long-term financial effectiveness. Why ignore those?
There are no guarantees, but there are ways to improve your profitability longterm. As a Topp Herefords customer, we can help you diversify your marketing portfolio. This is your brand. This is your livelihood. There is power in choice. Let us help you capitalize on it.
Feeder Calf Marketing Options
Through a variety of feeder programs, ranging from spot sales to forward contracting, we can help you capture the added value of your Topp Herefordssired calf crop.
Baldy Heifer Calf Buyback Program
In partnership with Pitz Farms in Iowa, Topp Herefords buys back about 2500 head annually of first cut, replacement-quality open heifers from our bull clients and are developing relationships placing additional females into trusted programs.
Retained Ownership Opportunities
Retained ownership gives producers the opportunity to capitalize on the full potential of their calves. We are working to introduce our bull customers to the option of retaining ownership of their calves to the rail.
Crossbreeding
Maximize the number of TH-sired calves that qualify for the TH marketing programs with replacement quality, front end Angussired females bred to Topp Herefords bulls.
TH Pitz Heifer Development, LLP
It has been an honor to purchase and develop over 13,000 TH-sired F1 females in partnership with Bill Pitz, Farley, Iowa. The building of this large-scale heifer development program has given us a better understanding of the type and kind of cattle that survive and thrive in environments from coast to coast. Thank you to all our Topp Herefords bull customers for breeding and developing an excellent product that continues to create steady demand in the marketplace.

The go-to Sire group for low birth, optimal phenotype and marbling. For several years, 195B was primarily used as solely a calving-ease Sire. After seeing his daughters in production, we decided to incorporate him in the mature female Sire roster. 195B ranks in the Active Hereford Sire Eval in the top 12% CE, top 12% BW, and top 1% for both udder and teat. We expect several of these sons will be part of our AI program in 2025 and are eagerly anticipating the future legacy of this breed-changing Sire to carry on through his sons.
A highlight of the 2023 Topp Herefords bull sale, 11K was purchased by Gustavo Camarena of Mexico. 11K’s Dam boasts impressive growth ratios of 108.5 WW and 105.8 YW, backed by four generations of donor females with impeccable udder type. 11K progeny are some of the more eye-appealing cattle of the 2025 offering, while promoting above-average growth and acceptable BW with the bonus of being a high indexing BMI Sire.

24K was our pick of the 2023 Wagner Herefords bull sale. We searched the country for a high growth, maternal bull with carcass. Given what we were looking for and the results he produced we are ecstatic with the progeny he produced. 24K calves are average at birth and just flat excel to weaning. His exceptional Dam, C62, records lifetime indexes of 117.8 WW, 109 YW, 109.5 REA, and 139.5 IMF. 24K ranks in the upper 1% of the entire Hereford population for both WW and YW as well as the top 10% for REA and IMF.

It has been a great pleasure working with Bill Pitz, Farley, IA, over the past several years procuring Black and Red F1 baldy heifers from our Topp Herefords bull customers. Since the inception of our heifer program, the popularity and success of mating Charolais bulls to the TH Pitz F1’s as mature females have become apparent.
In 2022, we set out to find some of the most proven, performance-oriented Charolais donors available. The Charolais bull offering are designed to simply maximize heterosis with a threeway cross that guarantees pounds, growth, and feed conversion. The Charolais bulls will be offered private treaty.

The Power of Genomically Enhanced EPDs
The American Hereford Association (AHA) has embraced the use of genomics into their genetic evaluation by launching a first of its kind single step analysis that utilizes the marker effects of specific traits. Likewise, AHA is directly estimating accuracy values rather than approximating. The direct estimation of accuracy results in a more conservative value but a more accurate value than previous methodologies. The AHA is producing the most reliable genetic evaluation that is supported by Whole Herd TPR™ and genomics, which will give prospective buyers added confidence in purchasing young and unproven animals.
Buying animals that have a genomic profile incorporated into their Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) offers many advantages that allow for quicker breed and herd improvement. To the right is a table showing the average increase in accuracy when buying a young animal with a Genomic Enhanced EPD (GE-EPD) versus an animal without a GE-EPD. Similarly, an effective progeny number increase is listed by trait that shows how many progeny equate to a genomic enhancement of a young animal (e.g. yearling). That’s right, buying a young animal that has been genotyped is like having 2-17 progeny, depending on the trait. The proof gained on young, non-parent animals, through a genomic enhancement is valuable and greatly mitigates the risk and allows for more directed selection.
