From beneath the colossal domes of Sundays on down to the tiniest of glorified cow pastures on Friday night. The stories might be bigger

beneath the flickering HD replay screens, but they are definitely richer under the fabled Friday night lights here in Texas. Richer for these dramas are not played for millions or for fame or even for lasting glory. These Friday night stories are richer because of the people that make up the narratives. A man doesn’t spend thirty years walking those sidelines without amassing a lot of stories. A man doesn’t spend three decades teaching and leading young men without being a huge part of their story. And when such a man guides his squad to two state titles as the head man and a third as an assistant, he certainly deserves his name on the spine of the book. Eddie Metcalf is such a man, yet when you sit down and discuss

be a farmer like my dad,” Coach Metcalf said. “But then I decided I wanted to go to college. But I didn’t need to go college to become a farmer. My dad could have taught me everything I needed to know from his lifetime and wealth of knowledge. So I went into education and it’s been a great decision for me and my family.” Family is another prevalent theme behind Metcalf’s words. “My wife Stacy really had it harder than I did through the years. Down on the field as a coach you don’t really hear the comments and criticism from the bleachers. But a wife sitting up there … she hears it all.” Again with a laugh, Coach Metcalf said, “It takes a special woman to be a coach’s wife.” After thanking his wife, Metcalf was quick to applaud the many men he coached with and for over the years. From Clem Mancini who hired him for his first job down at Lubbock Roosevelt to Thiessen for bringing him to Stratford, and then longtime assistants like Jim Hand and Mark Keener. There were many more names, but sadly the dictation skills of this interviewer could not keep up with the level of Metcalf’s appreciation for the men he worked with. Prompted to discuss the three state titles (2000 as an assistant, 2005 and 2008 as head coach), Coach Metcalf said, “Those kids gave their all. They bought into the system and worked hard and gave it their all. But really I was fortunate to be part of a community where the kids worked hard and were used to being held accountable.”

The Book of Stratford Football with him, Coach Metcalf is almost reluctant to include his many contributions to the story. “I have simply been blessed to be part of this school and community,” Metcalf said. “I have to thank Brad Thiessen for bringing me into the program all those years ago.” Metcalf spent 21 years at Stratford, including 11 as head coach. Coach Metcalf laughed when I asked him about going to Stratford after growing up and playing in Panhandle. The Panthers and the Elks have waged some classic battles over the years so while the two communities certainly share many of the same qualities and ideals, the rivalry between them was and continues to be real. “Some of the guys I played with gave me a hard time about crossing over to the enemy,” Metcalf said. “And of course there are still plenty of people in Stratford who like to remind me of the games we lost back when I was playing for Panhandle. But it’s all good natured. I’m blessed to have good friends in both communities.” Blessed. Thankful.Those two words best sum up Coach Metcalf’s attitude towards his career. “I give God all the credit,” he said. “Without Him none of us could do anything.” When asked what led him to coaching, Metcalf was quick to mention his mom. I’ve been really proud to see these kids mature and go on to be hard working contributors to society beyond high school and the football field. Those are the successes that truly matter,” Metcalf said. Every book must have a last chapter, but that does not mean the story is over. Coach Metcalf is most excited about what’s to come. His sequel if you will. Retiring now gives him the opportunity to spend more time with his daughter. If he has any regrets, it’s for missing a good deal of her events, but now he can

concentrate and focus on her final years of high school. Coach Eddie Metcalf has forever etched his name in both the Stratford record book and the storied legends of Elks football. His words and teaching will continue to be part of the story for the many lives he touched. Thanks Coach Metcalf, for giving us such a rich narrative both on and off the field. Top O’ Texas Football 2014 In Review

The teams that call the Top O’ Texas home once again showed their power on a state level, especially in the lower classifications. From perfect seasons to heartbreaking losses, the season ran the gamut for many of our teams. As a new season dawns, some old powers remain strong, while others will be forced to rebuild. Hope springs eternal each fall as every team hopes to achieve a taste of the success the following teams saw in 2014.

title game, and unfortunately, 2014 ended the same way as a very successful year concluded with a (2066) loss to Throckmorton in the final. Throckmorton also ended the season for Guthrie (14-62) in a quarterfinal contest, leaving the Jaguars (12-1) for the season. Follett also proved tough to beat in 2014 at least for all teams other than Groom as the Panthers went (11-2) on the season with both losses occurring against the Tigers, including a tight (32-38) quarterfinal showdown.

1A The Top O’ Texas had representatives in both divisions of six-man football last season. In Division 1, Crowell was looking to defend their 2013 state title with their second straight visit to Arlington for the championship game. It might have felt a bit like déjà vu for all involved as once again May was the last team to stand in the way of a state crown. And once again, the Wildcats hoisted the trophy, capping a two-year run with a perfect 14-0 season and a second straight title. Crowell will enter 2015 riding a 23-game winning streak that dates back to an October 11th, 2013 loss (58-74) to Follett. As three time State champs, Borden County had another successful year, going 11-0 before their season ending loss to Valley (64-66) in a nail-biter of a regional contest. Happy also had a great season (12-1) only to see it end with a quarterfinal loss(14-64) to that same Valley squad. Valley ultimately fell to Crowell (50-100) in the semifinal game. The Groom Tigers took a 13-1 mark to AT&T Stadium in hopes of claiming their first state title. The Tigers fell in their only other first (1999) to the

this district is already marked as one of the toughest in the state. Abernathy was another team from the region that put together an impressive season. The Antelopes’ lone loss in 2014 came to Canadian (1462) in the two schools’ quarterfinal meeting. In Division 2, Seagraves carried an unblemished 13-0 mark into a semifinal showdown with Albany. Not since 1977 had the Eagles advanced so deep

into the postseason, but unfortunately, their perfect flight was grounded with a (14-24) loss to eventual state runner-up Albany. Iraan swept the regular season but went out (28-45) in an area round contest versus Santo. Booker suffered a similar fate when their unblemished regular season ended with a one-and-out postseason loss to Quanah (12-42). Crosbyton also had an astounding year going 12-1 and finishing with a Quarterfinal loss to Seagraves (21-49).

The Raiders led (21-13) at halftime against the Bearcats who have claimed four of the last five state titles. In Division II the Canutillo Eagles advanced to the Regional round on the strength of their best season in school history. A hard-fought loss (10-17) ended the Eagles season at 13-2. 6A Prior to last season, it had been five years since Permian’s mojo was mighty enough to claim a postseason victory. The Panthers bounced back in 2014, winning two such victories before dropping a regional round battle (14-42) against Euless Trinity. Amarillo High had a good year, winning double-digit games (10-2) for the first time since 2005. A pair of teams from the Top O’ Texas region reached the regional round in Division II. San Angelo Central (11-2) and Abilene High (9-4). The Bobcats fell to Southlake Carroll (10-35), and Abilene High lost to Cedar Hill (28-36).

3A For the third time since 2002, Shallowater advanced to the state semifinals. In a Division 1 showdown, the (13-1) Mustangs faced Mineola for the first time in school history, but Shallowater fell in the battle (27-42) to end their season.

The Sonora have 4 state titles to their name (1966, 1968, 1970, and 2000), so the Broncos were trying to bring a fifth out west when they took on Waskom in a semifinal matchup. In a tight game, Sonora fell just short (21-25). Waskom went on to win the title game so the Broncos know they were agonizingly close. Defending state champ, Cisco also had a very good year and many considered them the favorite to repeat before their oh-so-close quarterfinal defeat (35-36) to Sonora. 4A In Division I, both Big Spring and Abilene Wylie fell in regional round matchups. Big Spring lost to Stephenville (59-32) in a high-scoring affair whereas Wylie only scored a single touchdown in their lowerscoring contest against Graham (7-20). Sweetwater won thirteen straight games before dropping a close one-score quarterfinal match against Celina. The thirteen victories were the most for a Mustang team since 1997 and matches the 1985 state championship squad that went 13-1-1. 5A Coach Wood led his Randall Raiders to the most successful season (12-2) in school history last

Kingsbury Needs Raiders Coaches in college football need a little bit of time to recruit their type of guys when they first take over a program. That is no different in Lubbock, where Texas Tech enters its third season under young Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury—he turns 36 on Aug. 9—who once dazzled with his arm as the quarterback of the Red Raiders from 1998 to 2002. Kingsbury set 59 overall records during his four years in Lubbock—39 school records, 13 Big 12 Conference records and seven FBS records—as he completed 65 percent of his passes for 12,423 yards with 95 touchdowns and 40 interceptions. But Kingsbury is not in control in the huddle anymore, as he has traded in the helmet for a headset. Kingsbury began his coaching career in Houston in 2008, where he served as offensive quality control coach through the 2009 season. He was named co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Cougars after then-offensive coordinator

Dana Holgorsen was hired to serve the same role at Oklahoma State prior to the 2010 season. Kingsbury remained in that role for two years before moving on to Texas A&M, where he was hired as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2012. After that one year calling plays for the Aggies, Kingsbury returned home to Lubbock in 2013 as head coach at TTU after Tommy Tuberville resigned and accepted the head-coaching position at Cincinnati. The beginning of Kingsbury’s head-coaching career could not have gone any better. Tech went 7-0 in their first seven games of 2013, but they lost their final five games of the regular season, and they ended up 4-5 in conference play. However, the Red Raiders ended the year on a good note, defeating Arizona State, 37-23, in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, Calif. However, 2014 was a nightmare for everyone involved, as the Red and Black struggled to a 4-8 record and a 2-7 conference record. Multiple injuries derailed the squad and, plain and simple, Texas Tech was ineffective all around, especially defensively. The Red Raiders surrendered an unacceptable 41.2 points per game last year, and they gave up 513.4 yards per game, including 260.2 yards on average on the ground. If TTU is to rebound from an atrocious 2014, the defense is going to have to improve—a lot. If they can even manage to be a middle-of-the-pack unit,

Tech should be able to win a lot of ballgames. The man hoping to spearhead that improvement will be defensive coordinator Mike Smith, who replaced Matt Wallerstedt after he resigned in week three of last year. Smith will depend a lot on the man who led the team in tackles last season, senior linebacker Pete Robertson (6-3, 238). Robertson not only led in tackles (81 total), but also in sacks (12), tackles for loss (14.5), quarterback hurries seven and forced fumbles three. Other returners who will be highly depended upon defensively will be senior linebacker Micah Awe (6-0, 223), senior defensive lineman Branden Jackson (6-4, 268) and senior defensive back J.J. Gaines (6-0, 181). Last year, Awe recorded 69 total tackles with one sack and three pass breakups. Jackson tallied 44 total tackles—2.5 for loss—finished second on the team with five sacks, forced one fumble and recovered two, and Gaines totaled 63 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups, one fumble forced and one fumble recovery. Other players to watch defensively will be junior defensive back Keenon Ward (5-9, 204), sophomore defensive back Tevin Madison (5-10, 171), senior defensive lineman Keland McElrath (6-4, 307), junior defensive back Justis Nelson (6-2, 189) and

sophomore defensive back Nigel Bethel II (5-9, 184). The big story heading into camp will be the quarterback battle between junior Davis Webb (6-5, 227) and sophomore Patrick Mahomes (6-3, 221). Webb completed 211 of 345 passes for 2,539 yards, 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season, and he hopes to be the guy leading a red and black offense that should be fun to watch— especially through the air. Mahomes saw action in seven games a year ago, and he put up some very solid numbers in relief of Webb, who was forced to undergo surgery on his non-throwing shoulder at the end of the year. Mahomes was 105 of 185 for 1,547 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Kingsbury plans to name the starter not too far into fall camp so the starter can get into the flow of the offense. Their offense appears ready to go off, but the quarterback is going to need some help from his pass catchers. Tech wideouts dropped way too many balls last season, and they are going to need to step up for their signal-caller if they are going to take the next step and be one of the more dominant offenses in the Big 12. The lead pass-catcher returning is senior Jakeem Grant (5-7, 169). Grant may be small, but he might be the most sure-handed receiver Texas Tech has— especially on third downs—and that is indicative of his 67 catches, 938 receiving yards and seven touchdown receptions a year ago. Tech will return their leading rusher from 2014, DeAndre Washington (5-8, 198), who racked up 1,136 rushing yards on 188 attempts with two touchdowns on the ground, and he also poses quite a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield. He caught 30 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns, as well. Another small target will be junior Devin Lauderdale (6-0, 181). Last year, Lauderdale was a big play threat once he got the ball in his hands, as he caught 31 passes for 589 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 19.0 yards per catch. Other wideouts to keep tabs on will be junior Reginald Davis (6-0, 185 and sophomore Ian Sadler (5-10, 198). But what the Red Raiders really need is someone to step up as a touchdown threat in the red zone, and junior Dylan Cantrell (6-3, 219) possesses both the length and the size to get the job done once the offense gets closer to paydirt. Cantrell caught 20 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns last year. TTU might be getting overlooked on the offensive line. Senior Le’Raven Clark (6-6, 316), senior Alfredo Morales (6-4, 310), senior Jared Kaster (6-3, 293) and junior Baylen Brown (6-4, 310) are returning for the 2015 season, and they are collectively experienced, large and athletic.

Overall, it is a perfect match—the fans know Kingsbury has the ability to bring that Mike Leach factor back to Lubbock, and Kingsbury knows what type of players can do just that. Returning Experience Brings Buffs New Hope 246 carries—good enough for a 5.5 per-carry average—with 21 rushing touchdowns. Out of the backfield, he caught 29 passes for 242 yards and one touchdown, as well. Alridge-Mitchell ranked fourth in the nation with 2,241 allpurpose yards, as he was also a major threat in the kicking game, compiling 657 kick-return yards with one touchdown return. His banner season earned Alridge-Mitchell first-team All-Conference honors as well as All-America Honorable Mention of D2Football.com. Alridge-Mitchell had nine consecutive games of 100plus rushing yards, and his 23 combined touchdowns set a school record for a season. In WT’s playoff loss against ENMU, he racked up 167 rushing yards on 27 carries with five touchdowns on the ground.

Although 2014 ended up being a bit of a rebuilding year for the West Texas A&M Buffaloes, expectations were still high nationally, as they began the year ranked No. 11 in the country. The Buffs ended up going 6-5 overall with a win over McMurry in the Lone Star Conference playoffs, 58-13. But their season came to an end with a 55-45 loss one week later to Eastern New Mexico, their second loss of the year to the Greyhounds and third in two years. While it might be considered a disappointment, perhaps the reality is WTAMU had a solid season with a very young group, and the end result proved just that. The team had to rely heavily in 2014 on some Buffs who were role players the year prior, as well as turning to a plethora of youngsters in key positions. However, if last year was indicative of their future, the WT program might be prepared to be the serious threat it is accustomed to being once again. Offensively, it all starts at quarterback with senior Preston Rabb (6-7, 220). Although it took a couple games for him to get cranked up, the lanky right-hander showed exactly why he won the preseason quarterback battle to be named the starter a year ago. Rabb ended the season completing 243 of 380 passes for 2,912 yards, 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. If the Buffs are to return to where they were the previous three years prior to last, Rabb is going to have to take that next step and punish opposing defenses with his arm. Rabb’s most passing yards in a game occurred on Sept. 27, 2014, against Angelo State, where he completed 34 of 49 passes for 495 yards through the air. His four touchdown passes against McMurry on Oct. 4, 2014, were a single game-high for his career, as well. At tailback, senior Geremy Alridge-Mitchell (5-8, 203) will spearhead the rushing attack. Alridge-Mitchell has garnered a lot of experience in his previous three years on the roster, and last year was easily his best. The wide receiver position may be a bit of a concern heading into the season, however, as it does not appear WT has a clear-cut, serious pass-catching threat. The leading wideouts returning are seniors Word Hudson (6-0, 180) and Jarrian Rhone (5-8, 169). Together, Hudson and Rhone combined to catch 58 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns last year. The Buffs will likely look to seniors Dimitri Donald (5-10, 192) and Xavior Amey (6-2, 175) to step up in the passing game as well. Along the offensive line, senior tackle Stan Hasiak (6-4, 280), junior center Austin Carson (6-2, 308) and sophomore tackle Dillon Vaughan (6-6, 298) are returning starters. Hasiak spent his first two collegiate years at UCLA, where he garnered three games of experience as a true freshman. After moving to Mt. San Antonio College for a year, he started nine games for the Buffs in 2014 and earned first-team All-Conference accolades. Carson earned second-team All-Conference honors a year ago, as well, and Vaughan—younger brother of Dallas Cowboys quarterback and all-time WT passing leader Dustin Vaughan—will look to continue being a bookend on the right side for the Buffs.

On the defensive side of the ball, WT has an experienced lineup returning, and multiple players will rotate in and out of the defense to keep fresh bodies on the field. Some key players to watch will be junior defensive back Will Toliver (6-2, 198), junior linebacker Alex Olson (6-0, 218), sophomore linebacker Carter James (6-2, 230), junior nose tackle Alex Tucci (6-2, 298), junior linebacker Patric Youngman (6-1, 231), senior defensive end Jacob Laguna (6-2, 266), senior defensive back Anthony Hayes (6-0, 180), senior safety Ethan Morriss (6-0, 204), junior defensive tackle LaPear Willrich (6-1, 299), sophomore defensive back Hunter Streuling (6-0, 166) and defensive lineman Iosia Iosia (6-6, 274). James led the Buffs in tackles as a freshman in 2014 with 125 total, and he was awarded for his solid first season

Streuling only got one start in the defensive backfield last year, but he was able to finish third on the team with 75 total tackles and picked off a team-leading three passes. Iosia played in all eleven games last season, and he tied for the team lead with three sacks while recording 43 total tackles on the defensive line. Iosia was named as an All-LSC

Junior Conner Hollabaugh (5-10, 181) will once again handle the kicking duties, and Nesbitt will feel quite comfortable sending Hollabaugh and his trustworthy foot out for field goals. Hollabaugh received second-team Daktronics All-America honors as well as being named to the first AllRegion team, nailing 17 of 19 field goals and 48 of 50 extra points. Senior All-Conference Honorable Mention Elliot Moore (6-0, 180) will handle the punting duties again. In 2014, Moore average 40 yards per punt with a long of 59, and he planted 12 punts inside the 20. Some games of note for the 2015 season will be the opener against Azusa Pacific (Calif.) on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at Happy State Bank Field in Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon, and the first conference game will be in Arlington at AT&T Stadium for the 2015 Lone Star Conference Football Festival at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 against Tarleton State. The Buffs will look to bring the Wagon Wheel back home to Canyon this year, as they take on ENMU on Oct. 31 at 12 p.m. in Canyon. The Greyhounds have held the beloved Wagon Wheel since a stunning 39-38 upset on Nov. 2, 2013, in Canyon.

After moving over from Colorado State, Tucci has earned secondteam all-LSC honors in both 2013 and 2014. Wayland Baptist Pioneers — Central States Football League

Pioneers Look For Next Level Success Year four of the resurrection of Wayland Baptist football will see the Pioneers looking to add another level of success to their plan. Coach Butch Henderson’s team last year put together three victories, matching the win total from the first two seasons combined. But more than that, Henderson said, the Pioneers “have built a (quality) culture. The things we got done that you may not always see on the field: Being prepared week after week and their willingness to prepare and the ability to believe in what they’re doing. Even with the struggles midway through the year, those guys still believed, and that’s part of what you have to have in that culture.” Beyond establishing that foundation, the Pioneers took several meaningful on-field strides in 2014, chief among them the three wins. The Pioneers also secured their firstever road victory when they won their season-opener over now Central States Football League opponent Arizona Christian, 28-21. Wayland’s other two wins also came on the road in CSFL play, against Bacone College (26-14) and Texas College (34-8). What’s more, two of WBU’s losses – to Howard Payne and Sul Ross State – were by six points or fewer. “We played hard to be able to get those three wins, but we have to figure out how to put those final parts together to go ahead and win more and more,” said Henderson, the long-time coach at Lubbock Coronado High School. Henderson said he is encouraged by what lies ahead for the Pioneers. One reason is the number of players who are familiar with the system will continue to grow, and that includes members of the 16-player leadership class that have been at Wayland since the beginning who still have another year of eligibility. “By far the majority of our leadership class will be returning,” Henderson said. “That culture continues, but the other part of that is we have kids starting to stay – including emerging players who are really gifted athletes – who have been here two to three years and who understand your system. You can do things so much faster when you’re not re-teaching things.” While they’ll be missing some key players who graduated – including quarterback Anthony Campuzano, linebacker Jon-Lucas Poe, defensive tackle Reggie Pierce and safety David Hockenberry – the Pioneers bring back eight starters on each side of the line of scrimmage. Leading the veterans are three players named pre-season All-Americans in defensive lineman Holt Henderson, center Brandon Grant and linebacker Alden Mann. Henderson (6-3, 255), a senior from Tyler, is a two-time all-CSFL selection. He led Wayland in sacks last year with 8½ while recording 46 tackles and 14½ tackles for loss. Grant (6-3, 280), a senior from Bushland High School, was an All-Conference first-team pick on the offensive line, the team’s only first- or second-team selection on that side of the ball. Mann (5-10, 200), a junior from Wimberley High School, was second in the CSFL in tackles last season with 114, including a school-record 19 in the last game of the season against Oklahoma Baptist. four fumbles, had 10½ tackles for loss, and picked off three passes. Five other veterans earned All-CSFL Honorable Mention accolades, including the team’s top two receivers in Josh Bailey and Trey Rowe. Bailey (5-11, 175), a senior from Lovington, N.M., hauled in 37 catches for 522 yards and four touchdowns, all school records, while Rowe (5-10, 175), a junior from Lubbock Monterey, added 33 grabs for 497 yards and four scores. WBU’s other All-Conference picks were special teamers in kicker Daniel Martinez (27of-27 PATs) of Dallas Bryan Adams, punter Blair Magee (36.2 ypp) of Idalou High School, and kick returner Brandon Sheppard (19.1 YPR, one touchdown) of Wichita Falls Hirschi, who also plays cornerback. Besides Rowe, Grant and Bailey, other returning starters on offense are sophomore receiver Devonte Hayden (6-0, 175) of Garland, sophomore tight end Keyshawn Hawkins (6-2, 220) of Denver City, guards Anthony Garcia (6-0, 250) of Wichita Falls City View and Jacob King of Plainview, and tackle Terri Fields (6-5, 255) of Wichita Falls Hirschi. Wayland’s deep receiving corps also includes seniors Brenner Barnett (6-2, 185) of Friona, Stephen Malouf (5-10, 175) of Canton, and Chris Acosta (5-11, 180) of Amarillo Palo Duro (back after missing most

of last season with a hamstring injury); and sophomores Jarod Bargaineer (6-0, 170) of Apoka, Fla., and Preston Woodard (5-10, 180) of Levelland. Joining Holt Henderson, Mann and Sheppard as returning defensive regulars are tackles Nathan Askins (6-1, 280) of Amarillo Caprock and Denzel Bradford (6-2, 315) of Huntsville, senior linebacker Quinton Shafer (6-3, 220) of Borden County High School who had 53 tackles last year, and junior secondary specialists Josh Paul (5-10, 180) of New Home and Travis White (5-11, 175) of Krum. Taking over as full-time quarterback in Wayland’s fast-paced, Spread offense is Payson Bain (5-11, 180), the team’s third-and-short specialist last season when he completed 24-of-53 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns. Bain, of Vega, also is the leading returning rusher with 267 yards on 48 attempts, an average of 4.3, with two touchdowns. Last year’s feature running back, Evan Hearn of Plainview, is gone, and stepping into that role will be Michael Romero (5-8, 175) of Buda Hays High School, the leading prep rusher in Central Texas three years ago. He’ll be spelled by a pair of New Deal products in sophomores V.J. Gamez (5-8, 180) and L.D. Hunter (5-9, 180). “We had a really good spring, and everyone is excited about getting the year started,” Coach Henderson said. That will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 when the Pioneers host Southwestern College of Kansas in the home-opener. Wayland has five other home games: Sept. 26 against Sul Ross State followed by CSFL opponents Arizona Christian for homecoming Oct. 3, Texas College Oct. 10, Bacone Oct. 31 and Langston Nov. 7.
