A Long Shadow Cast By Travis Erwin If the adage …”Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” is true, then Brad Thiessen is one very flattered man. Coach Thiessen hung up the headset in 2009, yet his nearly two decades of coaching influence can be seen throughout the state. His love of the game, this area of Texas, and the men, young and old, that he coached, taught, and shared a sideline with is evident in every story he tells. As Amarillo ISD athletic director, Thiessen is still very involved in not only football, but every sporting endeavor for the high schools in the city, however, his legacy stretches far beyond Amarillo or the other towns he coached, making him a well-deserved inductee into our Hall of Honor. Brad grew up playing football and most every other sport in the northern panhandle town of Follett. He played for Coach Guerry Wright who coached “everything” according to Thiessen. The coaching bug had yet to bite, but the way Coach Wright respected his players while commanding respect from them was a great influence upon the way Thiessen eventually interacted with the young men he coached. The son of a minister, Brad’s faith has always played a big part in who he is. That devotion, along with a love of

music, led him to Grace College of the Bible in Nebraska to pursue a degree in music. But the melodious sound of football pads soon sung him back to Texas. “I missed the game. I missed playing,” Thiessen said reflecting on his time away from home. “I snuck off to watch a few UNO games and high school football when I could, but I knew I had to try and play again. So I came back.” Returning to the Lone Star State, Brad revived his playing career as a walk-on linebacker at Angelo State University. Not one to talk about his own accolades, Thiessen described himself as too small for the position, but it was the fact he played behind All-American Henry Jackson, not his size that limited his playing time. Still he made an impact as he was asked to stay on as a student coach. Thiessen credits that offer for planting the coaching bug in him. And while he understood the importance of that opportunity, an even greater calling persuaded him to transfer up to Texas Tech. That calling was the love of his high school sweetheart and future wife, Tanya. Proving there are some things more alluring than the crack of the pads. After graduating from Tech, Thiessen served as an assistant coach at Lubbock Roosevelt where he first partnered up with fellow coach, Eddie Metcalf. Theissen left the Hub City to work as an assistant coach at Bridegeport

But none of that really speaks to the mind and heart of a great coach and an even better leader. I asked Coach Thiessen what single thing made a good football player. He answered with, “The same thing that makes

a great person … A strong work ethic when no one is watching.” When I walked out of his office I thought about those words and the obvious truth behind them, but then I realized it had been a long time since Brad Thiessen has not been in the spotlight. No doubt he has always worked as tirelessly behind the scenes as he has with with every one watching. But one thing is clear those of us witnessing his career have seen a man dedicated to his God, his family, and his job. A man worth imitating.

Class 4A The Wichita Falls Coyotes proved the longestlasting TOT Class 4A school, surviving until the quarterfinals in Division II before going down to powerhouse Aledo, 69-14. Aledo went on to cruise to the state championship. Wichita Falls enjoyed an entertaining playoff run, posting close victories over Fort Worth Dunbar, 17-7, Everman, 31-28, and Canutillo, 19-10. Canyon also fell victim to the champs in the regional round, falling to Aledo, 54-14, after the Eagles took out Hereford, 71-21, and El Paso Bowie, 45-6. In lopsided bi-district encounters, Bowie blasted El Paso Parkland, 58-15, Canutillo walloped El Paso High, 45-7; and Randall leveled San Angelo Lake View, 42-10. Top O’ Texas Football 2013 In Review

What a year 2013 was for the Top-O-Texas! Teams in the Top-O-Texas region –roughly the western half of the state on a line between Wichita Falls and Del Rio – claimed all but one state title from Class 2A down. That’s a total of five state championships. Congratulations to Cisco, Wellington, Stamford, Grandfalls-Royalty and Crowell on their crowns, as well as to Wall for a state runner-up performance. Other TOT teams in lower classifications also enjoyed remarkable success in 2013. Semifinalists included Graham, Albany, Follett, Newcastle and Valley. Quarterfinalists were Wichita Falls, Shallowater, Lubbock-Cooper, Eastland, Canadian, Seagraves, New Deal, Goldthwaite, Loraine, Motley County, Happy and Ira.

In Division I, Frenship and Amarillo made it to the regional round where the Sandies lost to eventual champ Denton Guyer, 63-21, and the Tigers were nipped by Birdville, 26-22. Amarillo got there by defeating Monterey, 55-27, and El Paso Chapin, 42-35, while Frenship advanced with blowout wins over Amarillo Palo Duro, 49-0, and El Paso Del Valle, 37-2. In bi-district contests involving El Paso schools, Chapin topped Eastlake, 22-14, and Del Valle dropped Andress, 42-21. Class 3A Graham’s Steers enjoyed a splendid playoff run in Division II, taking down Castleberry, 68-0, Glen Rose, 34-0, Lubbock Estacado, 42-6, and Shallowater, 45-14, to set up a semifinals showdown with Argyle. Graham came out on the short end, 38-14, as Argyle went on to win the title the following week over Fairfield, 38-33. Shallowater’s postseason success featured wins over Dalhart, 42-12, in bi-district, Monahans, 43-35, in area, and Vernon, 35-26, in regionals. Other area round contests saw Estacado take down Snyder, 47-20, and Vernon flatten Liberty Hill, 34-7, while bi-district results were Estacado over Perryton, 18-14; Snyder over Clint, 48-21; Monahans over Pecos, 35-13; and Vernon over Lake Worth, 49-21.

Class 5A Abilene Cooper enjoyed the most successful state playoff run of the Class 5A TOT teams as the Cougars made it three rounds deep, advancing to the regional round in Division II before narrowly being eliminated by eventual state champion Cedar Hill, 28-23. Cooper, the District 2 runner-up behind San Angelo Central, defeated El Paso Coronado in bi-district, 49-14, and Lamar in area, 45-24. Central made it past El Paso Montwood in bi-district, 42-21, then fell to Fossil Ridge, 39-7. A tough Division I bracket saw Odessa and Midland

The Pirates of Lubbock-Cooper survived for four weeks in Division I, topping Pampa, 47-14, Wylie, 35-25, and Burnet, 41-34, before finally being stopped by Stephenville in the quarterfinals, 42-28. Stephenville also knocked out Big Spring, 47-36, in regionals after the Steers posted a pair of decisive wins over Andrews, 56-7, in area and Fabens, 61-21, in bi-district. In bi-district matchups, Andrews defeated Borger, 20-11, Wichita Falls Hirschi fell to Springtown, 49-27, and Wylie topped Fort Stockton, 49-3.

Making their first appearance in a state finals game, the Hawks had it all tied up at 14-14 after the third quarter, but Yoe put up three fourth-period touchdowns, the first following a successful fake-punt pass. Wall, which got 107 rushing yards on just seven carries from Brent Matschek, was hurt by three second-half turnovers. The rest of the Region I playoff picture saw Bushland beat Slaton, 49-22; Clyde over Comfort, 30-23; Idalou over Childress, 20-0; Eastland over Brady, 37-6; Littlefield over Brownfield, 44-36; Denver City over Muleshoe, 41-21; and Bangs over Comanche, 31-26. In round two Bushland defeated Clyde, 36-20; Eastland blanked Littlefield, 40-0; and Bangs edged Denver City, 27-25. Eastland eliminated Bangs in regionals, 49-23.

Class 2A Cisco put the wraps on an unbeaten season and claimed its first-ever state championship by knocking off Refugio in the Division II title game, 56-36. Thanks in part to a surprise onside kick, Cisco put the game out of reach by scoring 28 third-quarter points. Senior quarterback Colton Kent accounted for six touchdowns and 357 total yards (218 passing, 139 rushing) as the Loboes’ big-play offense rolled up 606 yards. Cisco had lost in its four previous trips to the state championship game, including to Refugio in 2011. Headed Towards Record Setting Year The excitement is building in Lubbock, Texas and the Red Raiders have their guns up. With Kliff Kingsbury returning for his second year as head coach, Texas Tech is ready to set some records, starting with an all-time high of 19,500 fans in the stands for the spring game. Another attendance milestone was reached when all season tickets were sold out, a first in school history. “There is nothing like game day at Jones AT&T Stadium and our team and coaches feed off your enthusiasm,” says Kingsbury after thanking fans of the football program. Texas Tech concluded the 2013 season with a repeat record from 2012 of 8-5, and 4-5 in Big 12. After a disappointing five game losing streak, Tech came to the 2013 Holiday Bowl prepared to play. The Red Raider talent exploded with an impressive win over Arizona State led by the confident play of a young, Davis Webb (6-4, 195). The former Prosper quarterback told himself that he was “going to send the seniors out right.” Webb completed 28 of 41 passes, throwing 18 and 21 yard touchdowns to Jakeem Grant (5-6,160), one yard to Rodney Hall (5-10,245) and 23 yards to Bradley Marquez (5-11,200). In the Spring game, Davis continued to exude confidence and accuracy. His outstanding performance began with a 67 yard drive followed by a six yard pass to Hall. Freshman linebacker and former Randall Raider, Collin Bowen intercepted a pass from back-up quarterback, Tanner Tausch, which gave Webb and the offense another opportunity to score. Webb found Grant on a 75 yard touchdown pass, and later, Marquez for a 23 yard score in the end zone. Webb, a sophomore, is one of 39 quarterbacks nationally named to the watch list. He played in ten games recording 226 of 361 completions for 2718 yards with 20 passing touchdowns and earning several honors as a freshman. The revered head coach intends to use the offense’s quick start as a key for Tech’s game plan. The Red Raiders will be returning eight offensive and four defensive starters from 2013. Marquez, a senior from Odessa, recorded a 60 yard reception against Stephen F Austin and 94 yards receiving to mark a career best. Junior DeAndre Washington (5-8, 190) posted a career high of 88 yards against Iowa State and earned Academic All Big 12 second team honors. The running back from Missouri City played in 12 games including two starts and racked up 107 rushes for 485 yards with four rushing touchdowns. Returning starter, Le’Raven Clark, moved to left tackle last season and has made 26 consecutive starts for the Red Raiders. He is on the Outland Trophy Watch List as well as the Lombardi Award Watch List for the second straight season. Tech will open the Big 12 Conference with a game at Oklahoma State. After a trip to Kansas State on Oct 4, Tech will have two homes games. The first, a chance for Tech to preserve victory over West Virginia, followed by a homecoming match against Kansas on Oct 18. The Red and Black will then travel to Fort Worth to meet with the TCU Horned Frogs on Oct 25. Henderson Feels Pioneers Are Real Close Should a coach realistically believe his team can go from a winless season to a conference championship in just one season’s time? He should if he’s Butch Henderson and he’s coaching the 2014 Wayland Baptist Pioneers. “The expectation is that we can win a conference championship,” Henderson said. “That is really built on the idea that we get success early (in the season). We played everybody strong last year, but we did not win. I think we’ve got to win early. You start winning and it carries itself. We need to get that momentum rolling before we get into conference play.”

To help make the Pioneers stronger in those situations, Henderson increased the amount of contact and live game work during the spring in an effort to help his team learn to finish games. “We felt like we played everybody close last fall, but we’ve got to find a way to come out and win and be able to make those things happen,” he said. “The physical part of the offseason, we really made great strides in increasing our strength and being able to increase our speed and our movement. Having kids who have been in the program four years and have been here and done this now for four years helped us make a jump fast.” Henderson said the strength of the 2014 Pioneers is the experience and maturity throughout the roster. The players have been through a baptism by fire in which they had to play right away in their college careers. That fire has melded them into a strong unit, Henderson said. “I think the strength is that you’ve got a group of young men that have been here together,” the coach said. “These guys have matured faster than others because they’ve had to. Usually, you kind of watch your freshman and sophomore years and start playing some as a junior and senior. These guys have had to learn through that freshman and sophomore year playing against people. I think that part of the experience is really going to pay dividends.” The coach said last year’s winless season took a toll on the coaches and players. But on the positive side, it also helped build character and a strong bond among the Pioneers. “There’s a high level of frustration when you go 0-10,” Henderson said. “That was a new experience for me. That was really a new experience for a lot of our players. The frustration is what you want them to feel. You don’t want them to be satisfied. Then you don’t have the expectations you need. We expected

Henderson plans on turning around Wayland’s fortunes from a 2-8 inaugural season in 2012 and a 1-9 mark last year (thanks to a forfeit victory) with the help of a strong group of returning players – nine players earned All-Central States Football League honors last year – as well as a promising class of recruits. “Not many people are going to come in and tell you we’ve got nine starters returning on one side of the ball and 10 on the other side,” Henderson said. All of those veterans are hungry for some success after their lone win last year went in as a forfeit victory over Langston, Okla., in a game Wayland lost on the field, 33-0. That said, the Pioneers sniffed the win column four other times, falling to Howard Payne by four points, Texas College and Bacone College by seven points apiece, and Southwestern Assemblies of God by five. Three of those games were conference contests. “We feel like we’re there with all those people. We’re nip and tuck with them. We’ve just got to find a way to win,” Henderson said. “When you’ve got the conference champion and you’re down by four late in the fourth quarter and have the football and all you’ve got to do is score and you’ll win, we’ve got to be able to come through and do that.”

But the ones who stayed have gained strength. “Some left us through that frustration level,” Henderson said. “But the ones that bonded and held that together are kind of that crossover generation group. They’ve bonded together. They’ve walked through the desert. They’re the ones that believe you can do it. They’ve stayed with us to be able to get it done and get this started. There’s a deeper bond than there would be in a lot of places. And all that really came out of, especially, last year.” Heading Wayland’s returnees on offense are five experienced linemen, led by second-team allconference center Chandler Layer (6-0, 260) of Rowlett and honorable mention all-conference guard Kevin Hobbs (6-3, 310) of Brownwood. The others are tackles Cody Dykstra (6-3, 265) of Odessa High and Jacob King (6-2, 280) of Plainview, and guard Brandon Grant (6-3, 280) of Bushland. Skill players returning include quarterback Anthony Campuzano (5-10, 185), the starter two years ago when he threw for 1,089 yards. Last year the El Paso Chapin graduate was among four quarterbacks who played for the Pioneers, with Campuzano completing 15-of54 passes for 248 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions.

Wayland’s top returning receivers are Chris Acosta (5-11, 180) of Amarillo Palo Duro and Josh Bailey (5-10, 175) of Lovington, N.M., who both have been with the program since it began. Acosta, an all-conference punt and kickoff returner, led the team with 36 receptions for 478 yards last season. Bailey, the slot receiver, caught 15 passes for 130 yards and just missed earning Academic All-America honors. Wayland’s running back will be transfer Evan Hearn, a former Plainview High School standout with one year of college eligibility left. Henderson said Hearn is a strong all-around back who does more than run the ball well. The Pioneers’ 4-3 defense is anchored by junior middle linebacker Jon-Lucas Poe (6-0, 205) of Midland Lee, a first team all-conference selection who led the

CSFL with 114 tackles, including 10½ tackles for loss and two sacks. The outside linebackers are Alden Mann (5-10, 200) of Wimberly on one side and Blair Magee (5-10, 205) of Idalou on the other side. Quinton Shafer (6-3, 220) of Borden County also will see playing time at outside linebacker.

The defensive line features returnees Holt Henderson (6-3, 255), a second-team all-conference pick from Tyler Chapel Hill, at end and Nate Askins (6-1, 280) of Amarillo Caprock at tackle. Henderson led the team with 4½ sacks and had 10 tackles for loss in 2014. The safeties are Travis White (5-11, 175) of Krum, who led the team with three interceptions last year, and David Hockenberry (6-2, 185) of New Deal, who had two picks and was third on the team with 74 tackles. The cornerbacks are Josh Paul (5-10, 180) of New Home, who intercepted two passes last season, and Brandon Shepherd. The Pioneers also have an honorable mention allconference punter returning in Josh Houghtaling, who averaged a league-best 47.8 yards last season while also playing some quarterback. The Pioneers open their season Aug. 30 at future CSFL opponent Arizona Christian in Phoenix. Their home opener is Sept. 6 against Western State Colorado.

Veteran coach Steve Warren and his Abilene Eagles are gearing up for what they hope will be a more satisfying season in 2014. Last year saw the Eagles win three games, going 3-5 in district. Just over half of the 2013 roster returns, including six starters on offense and five on defense. They’ll get reinforcements from a junior varsity squad that went 4-4-2. Most of Abilene’s experience on offense is found in skill positions, while most of the defensive starters back are linemen. Directing the Eagles’ one-back offense will be senior quarterback Derek Scott (6-0, 170), backed up by talented sophomore running back Abram Smith (5-11, 180). Scott also will have two veteran receivers to throw to in seniors Trey Dennis (5-10, 160) and Jeremiah Alonzo (5-11, 170), along with senior tight end Ryan Ware (6-1, 185). The only lineman with starting experience is senior Daniel Wilchie (6-0, 230). Anchoring Abilene’s 3-4 defense will be a trio of senior trenchmen Miguel Espinoza (6-0, 225), Reagan Cooke (5-10, 230) and Tom Berry (6-0, 215). Also back are junior linebacker Ronnell Wilson (6-0, 220) and senior cornerback Reese Childress (6-1, 175). Others who have caught the eye of Warren, who owns a record of 163-57 at Abilene and an 18-year career record of 181-79, include seniors Zach Moses (5-11, 175) and Dwayne Mayes (5-11, 175) at linebacker, Payton Coffman (6-2, 180) at receiver, and offensive linemen Austin Sifuentes (6-3, 230) and David Brown (5-11, 225); juniors Hill Holloway (6-0, 180) at linebacker, Sebryn Morris (5-11, 170), Ray Velasquez (6-0, 170) and David Earles (5-10, 165) in the secondary, and offensive linemen Dawson Worgull (6-1, 240) and Slayde Anderson (6-0, 240); and sophomore offensive lineman Coy McMillon (6-1, 230). Realignment shrunk the size of Abilene’s district, leaving for a pre-loop schedule that sees the Eagles hosting Colleyville Heritage to open the season, going to San Antonio Warren, taking on Abilene Cooper on Sept. 12, hosting L.D. Bell and traveling to Southlake Carroll. An open week precedes Abilene’s district schedule, which sees the Eagles getting what Warren believes are the three toughest teams right out of the gates in San Angelo Central on the road, Odessa Permian at home and Lee in Midland. The regular-season ends with the Eagles playing at Midland High and hosting Odessa High.

Abilene Cooper Cougars — District 4-5A

Abilene Cooper has won at least eight games and has gone at least two rounds deep in the playoffs over the last three seasons, and the Cougars will look to continue to prowl on an entirely new district in 2014. After the University Interscholastic League realignment this spring, Cooper will be competing in District 4-5A with four other teams: Lubbock High, Lubbock Cooper, Plainview and San Angelo Lake View. Coming fresh off an 8-5 season in 2013, the Cougars will be enjoying the return of five starters on offense and six on defense. Cooper will be ushering in a little bit of a newlook offense in 2014. Yes, that same spread formation will be taking shape again, but the loss of standout quarterback Lorenzo Joe to graduation leaves a huge void that will need to be filled in order for the Cougars to succeed. Head coach Todd Moebes, who carries a 26-12 record in his three seasons at Cooper, will turn to senior David Ruot (5-11, 200, 4.8) to take over at signal caller. Ruot did not suit up at all in 2013 due to injury. “We lost some very special football players, but have a lot of experience coming back,” Moebes said. “Our identity will be the same with some new faces in the crowd. David Ruot obviously will not pose the same threat carrying the football as Lorenzo Joe, but we are pleased by his accuracy throwing the football.” Ruot will look to get very familiar with junior wide receiver Aaron Anderson (6-0, 160, 4.5), who caught 32 passes for 528 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore in 2013, good enough to receive second team All-District honors. Senior tackle Jonathan Nicholson (6-4, 250, 5.1) will aim to keep Ruot’s jersey as clean as possible. Nicholson recorded 38 pancakes and graded out at 92% last season, earning him second team AllDistrict honors and an All-State honorable mention. Along the offensive line, the Cougars will also be welcoming back senior guard Hunter Hawkins (6-2, 280, 5.4) and senior center Jacob Vines (5-11, 215, 5.3). is a 13-game starter who recorded 18 pancakes and graded out at 88% a year ago. Another player to keep an eye on, offensively, is senior running back Skyler Wilson (6-0, 185, 4.6). Wilson carried the ball 68 times for 431 yards and five touchdowns last season. Two other juniors to watch on the offensive side of the ball are tight end Caleb Freeman (6-0, 190, 4.7) and running back Kristian Breedlove (5-9, 185, 4.8). Freeman caught four passes for 50 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore, and Breedlove had 22 carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore last season. Defensively, senior linebacker Josh Hale (5-11, 205, 4.8) will lead Cooper’s 3-4 scheme. Hale racked up 91 tackles, four sacks, eight tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 2013. Roaming the defensive backfield will be senior

One junior and one sophomore to watch on defense will be defensive back Kirey McAfee (6-1, 180, 4.6) and linebacker Devin Harris (5-11, 175, 4.7), respectively. McAfee recorded 12 tackles as a sophomore and Harris recorded 17 tackles as a freshman on varsity last year. The Cougars will open the 2014 season at home against Wichita Falls Rider on Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Cooper opens district play on Oct. 10 at home against Lubbock High at 7:30 p.m., and they will close up the season in San Angelo against Lake View at 7:30 p.m.

Billy Allen (5-8, 170, 4.5) and junior Darrien Campos (5-8, 160, 4.5). Allen had 51 tackles and six pass break-ups, and Campos had 32 tackles, four pass break-ups and one interception last year. Senior Zach Boyd (5-10, 200, 4.8) will be manning the middle of the defensive line at nose guard. Boyd is a 13-game starter who recorded 33 tackles, two sacks and six tackles for loss a year ago. Amarillo High blows into 2014 with high hopes of extending its five-season playoff streak as a member of newly formed Class 6A. The string of success includes last year’s march to the Class 4A regionals that was keyed by a record setting offense that put up 516 points. Thanks to their three-deep post-season run, the Sandies completed last season with a 7-6 overall mark and 3-2 district ledger. Despite the finish, head coach Mel Maxfield said injuries put the defense in a bind for most of the campaign. “We played hard,” Maxfield said. We were very good on offense and set a school record for scoring, but injuries affected the defensive performance. We must stay healthy, but I like our chances to compete for a district title and beyond.” The 2014 Sandies return just three starters on offense and five on defense, but Maxfield said last year’s adversity could pay dividends. “On the plus side, a lot of young guys got experience and that should help.” In his four years with the program, Maxfield has turned AHS into one of the area’s top running teams with the wing-T offense. That trend should continue in ’14. Run blocking is a key to the Sandies’ offensive attack and they return a trio of top-notch linemen in senior tackles Tate Stavenhagen (6-5, 280) and Kent Weatherly and senior guard Ty Bustos (5-10, 300). Stavenhagen was an all-district performer at tackle last season. Bustos is described by Maxfield as the team’s strongest player. Running backs Anthony Geiger and Spencer Simpson could also play big roles in the Amarillo High offense. Geiger, a junior, tallied 474 yards and 2 touchdowns on 78 carries last season. Simpson, a senior, pitched in with 404 yards on just 42 tries.

When the Sandies do take to the air, look for senior signal caller Matthew Ortega to be the triggerman. Last season Ortega hit on 26 of 35 passes for 374 yards, 8 TDs and no interceptions. “Matthew is a good passer who can also make plays with his feet,” Maxfield said. The AHS 3-4 base defense will follow the lead of senior linebackers J.P. Cognasi and Nic Bowerman. Cognasi registered 10 solo tackles and 35 assists last season and is the team’s leading returning tackler. Bowerman’s ’13 numbers included 6 solo stops, 21 assists, a sack and 3 fumble recoveries. Amarillo Tascosa Rebels — District 2-6A

Tascosa Looks Tascosa has missed the playoffs each of the last two seasons, but a move back into a district that won’t ask them to travel near as much will hopefully allow the red and black to revert back to their rebellious ways. The Rebels will take aim in District 2-6A at Amarillo High, Lubbock Coronado, Lubbock Monterey and Wolfforth Frenship. Tascosa is losing 33 lettermen to graduation, but they will be returning 22 lettermen to a team that should be rejuvenated heading into the 2014 season. Head coach Ken Plunk -- in his sixth season at Tascosa – said key losses at quarterback and on the defensive line will be the immediate question marks to begin the year, as Tucker Davidson and the entire defensive front was lost to graduation. Offensively, the red and black will be deploying the flex bone offensive scheme for the third consecutive year. The Rebels enjoyed a breakout 2013 season, as they gained just under 4,000 yards from scrimmage after accumulating just over 2,500 yards in 2012. Plunk said senior quarterback Jacob Biggers (5-10, 160), senior wide receiver Omar Barakat (5-9, 155) and senior offensive lineman Ansel Devine (6-3, 300) will look to perpetuate that success with a much better understanding of the scheme. Defensively, Plunk said the team has a lot of inexperience. Only two starters are returning from a squad that gave up the least amount of yardage in their district a year ago. Their talented newcomers on that side of the ball are a bright spot, according to Plunk, but they must acclimate themselves quickly. Amarillo Caprock Longhorns District 3-5A Caprock has played its best football in recent years, but Coach Parr, the man that three times led the Longhorns to winning seasons is gone. Given Caprock had not had a winning season in more than two decades the departure is certainly felt among the ‘Horn faithful, but the progress made under Parr is not lost. Coach Dan Sherwood takes over the Caprock football program after serving as Defensive Coordinator the last few seasons. Coach Sherwood, a West Texas A&M graduate plans to keep the same basic systems in place while installing a few minor tweaks with the idea of further improvement. The Longhorns got off to a great start in 2013 by making a clean sweep through the non district schedule with wins over Snyder (28-27), Borger (54-22), Lubbock Estacado (30-26), Plainview (30-21), and Lubbock Monterey (35-34). With the onset of district play Caprock continued their winning ways beating Dumas (38-27) but things snowballed at the tail end of the season and the Horns dropped four straight games to Amarillo High (2163), Canyon High (0-45), Palo Duro (21-55), and Randall (9-42). The four losses kept Caprock from making their third playoff appearance in the last four years. Steve Bergeski heads up Caprock’s Spread offense which will return 6 starters from last year’s squad including a trio of All-District players. Quarterback Victor Rodriguez (6’0 185 Sr. 4.65) threw for 20 TDs last season including 8 TDs to Austin Cruz-Riley (6’1 155 Jr. 4.58) who was chosen as a 1st Team All-District WR. Cruz-Riley is not Rodriguez only proven target returning as Caprock also has 2nd Team All-District WR Jordan Atkinson back as well as fellow wide receiver Christian Rodriguez (6’4 200 Jr.) With Sherwood moving up to head coach, Delt Cockrell and Mark Smith will pair up to run the Longhorn’s 4-2-5 defense. Up front Defensive tackle Marcus Smith (6’1 275 Jr. 4.9) will anchor the d-line after being a 2nd Team All-District DT last season. Caprock also returns talented linebacker Michael Lundegreen (6’0 190 Jr. 4.6)

Following consecutive road games at Lubbock Estacado September 12th and at Plainview September 19th, the Longhorns play Lubbock Monterey at home September 26th. Travelling again to Lubbock Caprock faces Cooper October 3rd to close out non district play. The battle for a playoff berth and/or a District 3-5A crown begins October 10th versus Palo Duro with the Horns being the home team. October 17th marks a road game against Randall and the Longhorns host Hereford October 24th. Canyon High comes to Dick Bivins Stadium Thursday October 30th and the regular season concludes November 7th at Dumas.

Amarillo Palo Duro Dons

District 3-5A

The Dons of Palo Duro have teetered around the .500 mark and have been knocked out of the playoffs in the bi-district round in each of the last two seasons. Eleven years have now come and passed since the blue and white have tasted a playoff victory, but with 22 returning lettermen from a year ago – eight on offense and three on defense – Palo Duro appears to have the potential to excel in 2014. In head coach Steve Parr’s spread offensive scheme, it all begins and ends with senior running back Anthony McClain (5-10, 190, 4.6). The Dons rushed for 1,818 yards last year, and McClain picked up 1,019 of those yards on 134 carries with 13 rushing touchdowns. McClain, a first team All-District selection in 2013, also caught eight passes out of the backfield for 134 receiving yards and one touchdown reception. Aiming to take some pressure off the running game, quarterback Kendrick Buckingham will look to build on some of the experience he garnered a year ago. Buckingham completed 70 of his 121 passes for 836 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. Tevin Donald and Doshon Johnson will be the two leading receivers in 2014. Donald caught 15 passes for 154 yards, and Johnson caught 11 passes for 95 yards and one touchdown last season. The top two offensive linemen heading into the year will be senior Luis Flores (6-0, 295, 5.0) and Alfredo Morales. Flores received second team All-District honors last season. The top two defensive linemen returning from a year ago are Desmond Burns and Andrew Sithadeth. The blue and white boasts a very formidable defensive backfield in Parr’s 3-4 defensive scheme. Their secondary is led by senior Zacchaeus Watson (5-10, 165, 4.5), a first team All-District selection at safety last season. Watson racked up 84 total tackles.

Senior cornerback Horatio Smith (5-9, 160, 4.5) was a second team All-District selection a year ago after recording 32 total tackles and three interceptions. Senior defensive back De’John Burns (5-9, 160, 4.5) is another defensive back to keep an eye on. Burns tallied 84 total tackles and two interceptions last season. Three promising newcomers to watch are junior defensive end Desmond Burns (6-3, 250, 4.8), junior linebacker Khalil Gipson (5-11, 200, 4.8) and Andrew Sithadeth. Palo Duro opens the season at Dick Bivins Stadium against Amarillo High on Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Canyon was making a good bit of history last year until they ran into eventual state champion Aledo in the regional round of the playoffs. The purple and white stomped all competition en route to a perfect 10-0 regular season record and two unprecedented victories in the playoffs over Hereford and El Paso Bowie, 71-21 and 45-6, respectively. The Eagles graduated quite a few players – 29 overall – but they will be enjoying the return of 38 lettermen, including four offensive and eight defensive starters. Head coach Blake Bryant, in his 15th season at the helm of Canyon, has listed three players as All-State potentials: seniors Cade McCallie (5-9, 175, 4.69), Derrick Spencer (6-0, 180, 4.56) and Issac Garland (6-5, 220, 4.79). McCallie has been an incredibly versatile player for the purple and white over the last two seasons. McCallie has played running back and quarterback on the offensive side of the ball, and he just so happens to be a returning All-District and All-Area defensive back in Bryant’s 4-3 defensive scheme. rushed for 366 yards on 69 attempts with six touchdowns in 2013 out of Bryant’s spread offensive scheme. Garland is Canyon’s top returning receiver, and he offers great size and at the tight end position. Garland caught 22 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns last season. Owen Carver is another of the team’s standouts at wide receiver. Carver tallied 11 receptions for 156 yards and one touchdown a year ago. Blake Christie (5-9, 170, 4.69) and Hunter Reece (6-2, 195, 4.79) will also be impact players out wide on offense for the Eagles. Kicker Ryan Guevara will resume kicking duties in 2014. Guevara made all extra points and nailed six field goals last year. Some promising newcomers to keep tabs on are Gunner Palacios, Dayne Douglass, Dakota Puga and Tommy Williams. Canyon Randall Raiders — District 3-5A

Silver & Black Pose Consistent Threat Since head coach Bryan Wood took the reigns of the Randall Raiders, the silver and black have been a force to be reckoned with. Wood boasts a 40-19 record at Randall, and the Raiders went 9-3 overall last season with a 4-1 record in district play before losing to Canutillo in the area round of the playoffs. Wood said his team will be looking different personnelwise on the offensive line and on defense, but he is happy with the skill players who will be taking the field for him in 2014. “We will be relatively young and inexperienced up front on the offensive side of the ball,” Wood said. “That is definitely the main concern going into 2014. The good news is that we have most of our skill guys back from last year, and that will help. “Defensively, we only return four guys, so we have lots of questions to be answered. The one thing that we do know is that our kids will work hard and that will be the key to filling the holes that we have.” Wood said his team’s strength is their work ethic, but he has obvious concerns with their depth and experience along the offensive line. Leading the black and silver offensively will be quarterback Brett Taff, who completed 93 of 145 passes for 1,456 yards, 14 touchdowns and just five interceptions a year ago. Randall will have a top-end running back in the backfield of their offense – which will show multiple looks out of the I-formation – in Wyatt Garton. Garton racked up 1,470 yards on the ground on 207 carries with 17 touchdowns in 2013. Paul Terry looks to be the top returning receiver. Terry grabbed 21 passes for 204 yards with one touchdown last year. Terry will turn around and be the team’s top defensive back, where he picked off three passes a year ago. Manning linebacker in the Raiders’ 3-4 defense will be Tyler Jolley. Jolley totaled 84 tackles last season. Some promising newcomers to watch are Ty Thomas, Will Patton, John Oehlert and Tray Williams. The Raiders will open the season at home against Plainview on Thursday, Aug. 28 at home at 7 p.m.

Amarillo Highland Park Hornets District 1-3A D-II Prior to last season it had been a decade since Highland Park wrapped up a season on the plus side of .500. But in Head coach Craig Shores second year of leading the Hornet program the team rebounded, after a 1-7 inaugural season under Coach Shores, to finishes 7-4 min 2013. The Hornets started the season with an impressive four game winning streak by beating Vega (19-7), Lockney (37-6), Bovina (20-14) and Wheeler (38-20). A (43-6) setback at Gruver didn’t take the sting out of the Hornets as they buzzed back with a big (57-14) victory over Claude. A (21-14) triumph over Sanford-Fritch opened district play but Highland Park came up short (1257) in a loss to Spearman. In a close victory over Boys Ranch (22-18) the Hornets claimed their 7th win on the year. A regular season ending loss to Canadian (14-68) was not enough to keep the Hornets from earning their first playoff game since 2003. The Hornets fell (27-41) versus Post in the bi-district game, thereby ending their season. Looking back on the year Coach Shores said, “We had two overtime wins that were key to our turn around year.” Those wins came over Bovina and Fritch. The Hornets have plenty of reason to be optimistic in 2014 besides their impressive turn around last season. A total of 21 lettermen return including 7 starters to Highland Park’s Spread offense while 10 return on defense for the Hornets. Timothy Thornton (6’1 195 Sr. 4.5) is a WR/DB with both All-State and recruiting potential. Thornton is a two-way starter that hauled in 26 receptions for 457 yards and 8 TDs last season. Alex Paredes (5’6 145 Sr. 4.8) is another experienced receiver returning. Up front Jonathan Vizcarra (6’2 225 Sr. 5.2) is a two way starter on the line with both All-State potential and the talent to play at the next level. Line mate, Daniel Carillo (5’10 230 Jr. 5.1) is one of the top juniors on the roster. Other offensive starters returning include WR/DB Zack Younger (5’11 160 Sr. 4.5), OL/DL Brandon Ransdell (5’10 225 Jr.

Wildcats Aim For More River Road head coach Phillip Wiggins had to hit the ground running last year, as he was not introduced as the Wildcats’ head coach until early May of the 2012-13 school year. That did not leave Wiggins very much time to install his wishbone offensive scheme, but he has now had a full offseason of work with the purple and gold and he and his team will look to end a five-year playoff drought this upcoming season. Entering the newly-formed District 1-3A Division 1 with Childress, Dimmitt, Friona, Littlefield and Muleshoe, River Road will aim to continue improving under Wiggins with quite a young team.
