As a result the North American High School Football Coaches Association in conjunction with Western Sports Guides created a national classification system based primarily on starters of winning programs for three years, students who graduate, and two-year starters out of those high schools. Beginning in 1998 these statistics revealed a decline in the number of young men going out for football, and a lot of inconsistencies in how and where universities recruited student athletes. By Travis Erwin Driving across the Texas Panhandle you will occasionally see a lone tree rising from the middle of a dusty, windblown pasture. Such trees have always impressed me, for they are proof anything can be accomplished through hard work, stubborn determination, and unwavering dedication. These hardy trees are rare, but they are to be appreciated, applauded, and celebrated for sinking roots, thriving, and growing where lesser trees would not dare try. Veteran Coach Jim Hand shares a lot in common with such trees. For better than three decades Coach Hand sunk roots deep, and thrived, and grew right alongside the young men he coached. He admits it’s hard to be up in the stands on a Friday night rather than down on the field, but after spending a career coaching teams that earned wins by grinding out the clock via a strong ground game and protecting the ball he says the time had come for him to hang up his coaching hat and play grandpa to his granddaughter Maddie.

“Everybody wants to run a spread offense,” Hand said. “But I call it the chuck and duck.” Jim Hand might not be a fan of spreading the ball around, but he spent thirty four years spreading his wisdom, his friendship, and his love around this entire region. CLASS 4A Wichita Falls Rider and Wolfforth Frenship met in a Division 2 state quarterfinal showdown, with Frenship having outlasted the rest of the TOT field. Frenship made it there with wins over Canyon (4523), Clint Horizon (42-14) and Waco (45-28), but ultimately fell to Rider 33-7. Rider would later be defeated in the semifinals 26-19 by Lancaster. While it’s true the majority of the more than 300 teams in the Top O’ Texas coverage area fall in Class 2A and below, it’s also true that’s where the most playoff success has been realized in recent years. That trend continued once again in 2012 when the so-called “little guys” came through big time. The TOT region produced three state championship teams last season – Stamford and Munday in Class 1A and Throckmorton in Six-Man. The smaller classes also saw seven additional teams – Wall and Sonora in 2A, Wellington in 1A and Valley, Follett, Throckmorton and Strawn in Six-Man – advance to the state semifinals. Among the “big boys,” Graham made it to the semis in Class 3A.

CLASS 5A It was a tough year for Top O’ Texas teams at the top of the ladder as only Abilene High managed to advance further than the second round of playoffs. Three years removed from their undefeated state championship run, the Division 2 Eagles defeated El Paso Montwood in bi-district 34-15 and took out Arlington Lamar in area 53-34, before being eliminated in the regional round for the second straight season, this time falling to Waco Midway 34-31. Elsewhere, Abilene Cooper defeated El Paso Americas in bi-district 40-21 before being eliminated in round two by Arlington 27-20. The going was especially tough for TOT teams in Division 1. In bi-district action, El Paso Franklin knocked off San Angelo Central 34-14, and El Paso El Dorado edged Odessa Permian 34-33. CLASS 3A The Graham Steers made another serious run at a state title in 2012, advancing all the way to the Division 2 semifinals before finally bowing out to Gilmer 50-7. Gilmer then lost in the finals to Navasota, 39-3. Graham started its postseason run by beating Lake Worth (44-7), Glen Rose (42-28), Midland Greenwood (41-23) and Gatesville (40-35). CLASS 1A A year after falling in the state title game, the Stamford Bulldogs claimed their first championship in 53 years with an exciting postseason run. After losing just once in the regular season, the Bulldogs followed a first-round bye with wins over Tahoka (67-13), Quanah (48-22), Stratford (27-7) and Italy (41-8). Taking on Mart in the title tilt, Stamford rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to pull out a 35-28 victory. The star of the show was senior quarterback/defensive back Hagen Hutchinson, the game’s offensive AND defensive MVP who accounted for four touchdowns, including a 9-yard run with 32 seconds left. Hutchinson ran for 132 yards and two TDs, passed for 248 yards and two scores and on defense had 16 tackles and a

CLASS 2A In Division 1, Wall and Eastland continued their on-field feuds, with Wall gaining the upper hand for a 48-24 victory when the teams met in the state quarterfinals. Wall was ousted 29-22 the next week by Daingerfield, who then lost in the finals to Cameron Yoe 38-20. Wall got its rematch with Eastland with a first-round bye then beat Bushland 52-14 and Merkel 42-14. Eastland got there with a bye, a 48-34 victory over defending state semifinalist Muleshoe and a 23-14 win over Bangs. Merkel and Bangs each won a couple playoff games; Merkel beating Comfort (20-0) and Littlefield (21-14) and Bangs taking down Breckenridge (27-19) and Idalou (23-6). Other bi-district results saw Bushland beat Brownfield 35-22 and Muleshoe drop Denver City 47-22. Sonora was the talk of the Division 2 bracket as the Broncos got all the way to the semifinals by taking out Ballinger (35-10), Post (34-10), Canadian (2414) and Colorado City (42-21). In the semis, Sonora fell to Corsicana Mildred 28-14. Mildred then lost in the championship to East Bernard 56-14. Colorado City’s nice postseason run featured wins over Crane (20-0), Sanford-Fritch (21-19) and Abernathy (2814). The Moguls, who finished the season a perfect 15-0, got to Arlington out of Region II by beating Wink (6334), Hamlin (66-13), Albany (55-13) and Wellington (48-6). The Panthers, who entered the playoffs with a modest 5-4 record, rolled to the championship by beating Groom (52-7), Amherst (68-23), Motley County (54-8) and GrandfallsRoyalty (44-32); but undefeated Richland Springs was too much to handle as the Coyotes claimed their third straight title and sixth in seven appearances with a 60-14 victory. Under the direction of first-year coach Harley Ethridge, who spent six seasons as offensive coordinator at Richland Springs, Follett was playing in its fourth state final and second in five years. The Panthers fell to Strawn in the 2008 championship game. Speaking of Strawn, the Greyhounds made it to the state semifinals in 2012, beating Woodson (84-58), Jayton (53-8) and Newcastle (52-42) before being ousted by Richland Springs (82-44). Grandfalls-Royalty made its run to the semis by beating Loop (54-6), Robert Lee (34-30) and Balmorhea (82-40). Teams winning a pair of playoff games apiece were Motley County, 86-41 over Lefors and 78-55 over New Home; Balmorhea, 66-30 over Welch Dawson and 44-40 over Loraine; and Newcastle, 94-48 over Sidney and 50-38 over Aspermont. Texas Tech Red Raiders Big 12 South

The Texas Tech Red Raider football program appears to be doing everything right these days, especially when it comes to hiring a head football coach. Not long after watching Tommy Tuberville take off after three years for Cincinnati, Tech did something that endeared itself tremendously to a legion of Red Raider fans; they hired Kliff Kingsbury. The former TTU quarterback’s return to Lubbock, after helping tutor Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel as Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator, has been met with mostly resounding applause. It didn’t take Kingsbury long to remember how to form the familiar “Guns Up” sign, and it took even less time for Tech fans to begin dreaming about things to come. That excitement and optimism shined through during the Red Raiders’ spring game when a record crowd of more than 16,000 showed up at Jones AT&T Stadium to watch the Red Raider defense do its thing by forcing three turnovers and outscoring the offense, 34-28. “I loved the atmosphere,” Kingsbury noted. Of course, it’s one thing to have excitement and optimism during the spring – every program should have that – but now comes the tricky part: maintaining that same excitement and optimism throughout the actual season. Last year, on the heels of a disappointing 2011 when Tech fell short of winning eight games for the only time in the past 11 years, the Red Raiders returned to that pinnacle by going 8-5, capped by an entertaining 34-31 victory over Minnesota’s Golden Gophers in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. So, does Tech have what it takes to get the job done in 2013? Their fans are counting on Kingsbury to figure it out. It helps that Tech returns six offensive and nine defensive starters from a year ago. However, it’s who doesn’t return – quarterback Seth Doege – that has Tech fans talking. Who will Kingsbury hand the keys to the Tech offense? His choices for driving the Red Raiders’ vaunted spread attach are sophomore Michael Brewer (6-1, 183) of Lake Travis, who performed well in mop-up duty last year, or true freshman Davis Webb (6-4, 194) of Prosper, or both. Whoever winds up under center, they’ll be grateful to have the likes of senior Eric Ward (6-0, 204) of Wichita Falls Rider running routes and snaring passes. Ward hauled in 82 last year for 1,053 and 12 touchdowns to earn All-Big 12 honors. are sophomore Jakeem Grant (5-6, 163) of Mesquite, who had 32 grabs in 2012, and junior Bradley Marquez (5-11, 201) of Odessa. Kenny Williams (5-9, 219), a junior from Pflugerville, returns as Tech’s top ground-gainer with 824 yards. He’ll have lots of competition thanks to guys like sophomore speedster DeAndre Washington (5-8, 182) of Missouri City, who is back after a knee injury derailed his 2012 season, senior SaDale Foster (5-7, 187) and redshirt freshman Quinton White (5-7, 197) of College Station. In the trenches, Tech is searching for replacements for a trio of long-standing linemen; although, returning starters Le’Raven Clark, who makes the jump from right guard to left tackle to replace LaAdrian Waddle, and Beau Carpenter provide some experience. Sophomore brothers Alfredo and Tony Morales (both 6-3, 302) from Arlington show lots of promise, as do sophomore Jared Kaster (6-3, 271) of Altair and redshirt freshman Trey Kennan (6-6, 280). Much has changed with the Tech defense, the most notable switch being the addition of co-defensive coordinators Matt Wallerstedt and Mike Smith. Wallerstedt served as the A&M linebackers coach, while Smith was linebackers coach with the New York Jets. Smith is a former Red Raider player, like Kingsbury and co-offensive coordinators Sonny Cumbie and Eric Morris. Cumbie, incidentally, is the lone assistant retained from Tuberville’s staff. The other big defensive change for the Red Raiders is switching to the 3-4. It

won’t be easy making the change while counting on some young but promising players to develop across the board. Among the veterans needing to take the lead are linemen Kerry Hyder (6-2, 281), a senior all-conference selection from Austin who recorded 56 tackles (14 for loss) in 2012, Dartwan Bush (6-1, 256), a senior from Clute who had 41 tackles and six sacks a year ago, senior Dennell Wesley (6-1, 286), junior Delvon Simmons (6-5, 290) and junior Jackson Richards (6-4, 248) of Southlake. Helping out Tech’s special teams are the return of junior kicker Ryan Bustin of Kilgore and senior punter Ryan Erxleben of Lake Travis. The coaching era for Kingsbury gets under way on Friday, Aug. 30 at SMU in front of a national TV audience on ESPN. Four of the next five games are in Lubbock against Stephen F. Austin, TCU, Texas State and, after a trip to Kansas, Iowa State. After that the Red Raiders go to West Virginia and Oklahoma, host Kansas State, meet Baylor at Cowboys Stadium on Nov. 16, then finish up the regular-season in Austin against Texas on Nov. 28.

WTAMU Buffaloes Lone Star Conference South Coming off one of its best seasons in school history, the West Texas A&M football team is poised to make another run at a national championship in 2013. The Buffs (12-3, 7-1 Lone Star Conference) return 41 letterwinners from last season’s NCAA National Semifinal run. The Buffs equaled the most wins in school history in 2012 as they were co-LSC champions and earned the No. 6-seed in the NCAA playoffs. WT won three consecutive road games at No. 3-seed Chadron State (38-30), No. 2-seed Ashland University (33-28) and a 34-13 win at No. 1 overall and top-seeded Colorado State-Pueblo to earn the berth in the national semifinal. WT fell 41-18 at No. 2 Winston-Salem State to end the season. The road win at Chadron State was the first road win for the Buffs in the NCAA playoffs in school history and the win over Ashland marked the furthest WT had advanced in the NCAA playoffs in school history. WT is 6-6 all-time in six trips. Offensively, WT returns seven starters from a season ago, including Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Year senior quarterback Dustin Vaughan who was a Harlon Hill Finalist as a junior (Top Eight). He had a record-setting

year both on the field and in the classroom as he passed for 4,712 yards, which was the third-most in school history in a single season. Vaughan tossed 45 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions as he completed 359 of 555 passes for 64.7 percent and 314.1 yards per game. Vaughan earned second team D2Football.com AllAmerica accolades and was a third team Beyond Sports Network All-American. He led the LSC in just about every passing category and ranked 10th nationally in passing efficiency and 10th in total offense at 323.4 yards per game. In the classroom, he was the Capital One/CoSIDA Division II Football Academic Player of the Year and earned LSC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. catches and 1,430 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns as he averaged 102.1 yards per game. His 1,430 yards receiving was third-most in school history in a single season. Allen had six games of over 100 yards receiving, including a career-high 185 yards and three scores in the win at Ashland in the NCAA playoffs. Allen was named Co-LSC Receiver of the Year and was a Daktronics second team Super Region Four selection. Allen’s 102.1 yards per game were good for 12th nationally and he led the conference, while ranked 33rd nationally in receptions per game as he hauled in 6.21 catches per game, which also was league-best. Senior Nathan Slaughter also returns at wide out as he finished second on the team in receiving yards with 827 and scored six touchdowns. Slaughter had 67 receptions and averaged 12.3 yards per catch and 59.1 yards per game. In addition to catching, he also returned kicks as he had 24 returns for 551 yards. Slaughter hauled in a career-high 170 yards receiving and two scores in the Buffs’ win at Colorado State-Pueblo in the NCAA quarterfinals. Slaughter was an honorable mention all-conference selection, earned academic all-conference accolades and was a first team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America selection. Senior Trevor Hammargren came into his own as a junior as he was an honorable mention all-conference pick after recording career-highs in receptions (42), receiving yards (393) and touchdowns (7). He averaged 28.1 yards per game and his 393 yards ranked fourth on the team. Sophomore Jarrian Rhone had an outstanding redshirt freshman season as he finished third on the team with 51

catches and 551 yards with three touchdowns. Rhone averaged 36.7 yards per game and 10.8 yards per catch. He also handled return duties with 12 returns for 360 yards. True freshman Word Hudson came on midway through the year and didn’t disappoint as he had 11 receptions for 149 yards and a score. Hudson tallied five receptions for 90 yards and a 62-yard TD in a 52-28 win at West Georgia. The Buffs will have to replace three key players on the offensive line due to graduation. Manase Foketi, Casey O’Conner and Aaron Mullane are all gone. Foketi, who came to WT last August, graduated from Kansas State in 2011 and had one year of eligibility remaining. He was a Gene Upshaw Award finalist in 2012. Mullane was a four-year player for the Buffs and O’Conner handled the snapping duties at center. Despite the losses upfront, the Buffs return senior starter Craig Watts, who earned second team all-conference honors as he played and started all 15 games in 2012. Also back is senior Patrick Ward who played and started 14 games on the line and earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Marc Waller, who played in all 15 games last year, returns as well. Senior Stephen Dube played in 14 games with three starts, while senior Terrance Harris also returns on the line after redshirting in 2012. The running back position might be the biggest question mark for the Buffs offensively in 2013 as starting running back, Khiry Robinson, graduated and signed a free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints this past spring. Robinson rushed for a school-record 1,621 yards in 13 starts in 2012. He averaged 124.7 yards per game, which ranked him 13th nationally. Robinson was 10th nationally in all-purpose yards at 173.2 per game as he had 19 punt returns for 175 yards and one kick return for 26 yards. He had 10 games of rushing for over 100 yards, including a career-high 235 yards in the Buffs’ win at Chadron State. He was named the LSC Running Back of the Year and earned first team all-conference honors and D2Football.com second team All-America accolades. Senior Aaron Harris and sophomore Geremy Alridge return to the backfield in 2013 as Harris saw limited action due to injury in his first season in a Buffalo uniform. He rushed for 64 yards and one touchdown, while Alridge saw action in all 15 games. He had 34 carries for 225 yards and four scores. Defensively, it all starts upfront with senior Ethan Westbrooks who had an outstanding season in 2011. He played in all 15 games with 14 starts and was named Ron

Westbrooks was a beast in the backfield as he broke the school-record for sacks in a season with national-best 19.5 for 116 yards and had a conference-best 28 tackles for loss for 139 yards. The amazing part is he had just four sacks in the first six games and finished with 15.5 in the final nine contests. He had 60 tackles with 29 solo stops, while recording 19 quarterback hurries and forcing three fumbles. Along with the Daktronics honor, Westbrooks was named Daktronics Super Region Four Defensive Player of the Year, was Don Hanson All-Super Region Four Defensive Player of the Year and Super Region Four Defensive Player of the Year. He also was the LSC J.V. Sykes Defensive Player of the Year and earned first team Little All-America honors and

was a first team D2Football.com All-America selection. Also back on the front line is senior Shane Pennix who tallied 29 tackles while playing 11 games with five starts. He had 12 solo stops with four tackles for loss for 21 yards, 2.5 sacks for 17 yards, a forced fumble and fumble recovery, along with three quarterback hurries and one pass breakup. Redshirt freshman Jacob Laguna saw action in all 15 games on the defensive line while recording 22 tackles and nine solo tackles. He had 2.5 tackles for loss for 16 yards and one sack for 12 yards. Senior David Christmas also returns on the defensive line. The Buffs will need to replace the services of graduated all-American Tyrell Higgins in their 3-4 scheme. He had 42 total tackles with 20 solo stops, 15 tackles for loss (70 yards) and was second on the team with 7.5 sacks.

At linebacker, the Buffs return senior Taylor McCuller who set the school-record for tackles in a season with 164 tackles and 73 solo stops. He had 11.5 tackles for loss for 31 yards and 3.5 sacks for 11 yards with one pass breakup, five quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. McCuller earned second team all-conference honors and second team Daktronics All-Super Region Four accolades. Also returning is senior Kyle Voss who finished second on the team in tackles with 119 and 49 solo stops. He was second on the team in tackles for loss with 20.5 for 81 yards and four sacks for 34 yards. He led the team with six pass breakups and tallied two quarterback hurries. Also back is sophomore Chris Ceazer who saw action in 13 games with eight starts as a redshirt freshman tallying 36 tackles with 27 solo stops and three pass breakups. Junior Torian Oakley earned second team all-conference honors as a sophomore last season as he had 57 total tackles with 36 solo stops, along with 2.5 tackles for loss and tied for second on the team in interceptions with three. Senior Dwight Morrison returns after recording 32 tackles and 19 solo stops and earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Also looking to make an impact this season in the secondary are sophomores Anthony Hayes, Kendrele Staten and Ethan Morriss. The special teams return all three players, including senior All-America kicker Sergio Castillo, Jr. Castillo, Jr., as he ranked tied for ninth nationally this past season in field goals per game at 1.33. He finished 35th nationally in scoring at 8.6 points per game. Castillo, Jr., went 20 of 23 field goals and made 69 of 70 PATs. He earned first team all-conference honors and Daktronics first team All-America accolades, as well as D2Football.com honorable mention allAmerica honors. He ranks third all-time in school history in scoring with 288 points and set the school-record for career field goals with 38. Senior punter Kevin VanVoris also returns as he finished 2012 ranked 28th nationally in punting average at 40.74. He had 19 punts inside the 20, eight of 50 yards or more and five touchbacks. VanVoris also handles the kickoff duties as he had 104 kicks with 64 touchbacks and a 62.9 average per kick. Senior deep snapper Ramon Lopez also returns, along with senior holder and defensive back John McSheffery.

He had 87 total tackles which was third-most on the team with 53 solo stops. He had 8.5 tackles for loss and one sack.

the year. Included in that was a 685 yards of passing in a 914 yards of total offense game that set the NCAA record for most yards in a game. Bryce Johnson moved over to running back from wide receiver last year and proved to be a weapon out of the backfield. He had 213 yards receiving out of the backfield in the Sul Ross State game. He will be used in a similar role this season. Jeremy Harris and Chris Silva saw some reps as newcomers in the system and Kerry Sloan, Jarvas Morris and McMurry transfer Stehl Ratliff are also expected to compete for time in the backfield. The Cowboys are loaded with talented receivers. Trei Lewis is back on the outside after catching 42 balls for 645 yards and 10 TDs as a sophomore and electric athlete Jessie Ramos from Stamford will get the start on the other side. He was a factor wherever he touched the ball last season. He was behind a senior last year, but still managed 25 catches for 459 yards and seven touchdowns. He also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and scored on a reverse. He averaged a touchdown every 4.5 touches last season and was named an all-American as a kick returner, averaging 29.9 yards on 15 returns. Jimmie Simpson is back at slot back. He had 41 catches for 675 yards and nine touchdowns and his backup Colton Brewer had 21 catches for 365 yards and two touchdowns. Brewer, Simpson, Johnson, Ramos and Lewis combined for 10 of the 14 100-yard receiving efforts for the Cowboys in 2012. Freshman Garret Martin and sophomores Taylor Huff and Spencer Ryan are also expected to be in the receiver rotation. Five returners will compete for time at tight end and HSU uses several jumbo packages that allow several to get in the game. Ty Fisher has the most experience with three catches for 71 yards last season. Converted offensive lineman Matt Hall is used in short-yardage spots and Raustin Harris moved over from quarterback this spring and is expected to play a role. Jacob Pierson and Stephen Kamp will also see snaps. The offensive line has been a well-oiled machine for the Cowboys and this year looks to be no different. Three starters return and two more that were in the rotation will move into starting slots. HSU uses a two-line approach and eight of the top 10 have varsity experience. Hardin-Simmons Cowboys American Southwest Conference When people think of Hardin-Simmons football, highpowered offense usually comes to mind and the 2013 version should not be any different. The Cowboys return seven starters from an offense that sat an HSU record with 558 yards per game. HSU led the nation in passing offense with 423 yards per outing, paced by all-American quarterback Logan Turner. Replacing Turner will be job one of fall camp and there are quality candidates for the job. Senior Josh Christian has the most experience, albeit limited game action, and goes into the camp as the favorite. Junior Rush Atkinson, who has guided the JV team the last two years are the leading returning candidates. Evin Abbe, a two-year starter from Abilene High, and

Walker, a redshirt freshman, led Pearland Manvel to a state title game appearance as a senior in 2011. Grandview’s Ryan Breton, Lubbock Cooper’s Travis Windham and College Station’s Weston Garner will all battle for the job as well. “As we head into the fall it is Josh Christian’s job to lose right now,” said HSU offensive coordinator Jeff Whitehead. “That being said the race isn’t over, Josh is the most experienced guy but those other guys are really talented. We think we have a really good crop of quarterbacks and we are excited to see how fall camp works out. We will have a very good quarterback, whoever it is.” The winner of the quarterback derby will be set up with a loaded set of skill position players. Among those is senior running back Tevin Mitchell. In his first season with the Cowboys, the Quanah native and West Texas A&M product, was off to a brilliant start. He rushed for 663 yards and nine touchdowns and had three 100-yard efforts on the ground before breaking his ankle early in the sixth game of the year. It finished his season but he has recovered and is expected to take the majority of the load at running back. When he went out the Cowboys went from a balanced attack to throwing for 2,238 yards in the last four games of

Senior Jonathan Wilder will play the other outside linebacker position after a 64 tackles, three sack season a year ago. Tyler Ryan, who missed last season recovering from an automobile accident, is talented and expected to take over at middle linebacker. Nolan Mills, Gabe Garner and Mike Garner are slated to be the top line of reserves. Mills played in nine games a year ago and Gabe Garner played in all 10. The secondary has some experience as well. Brandon Abbott and Keaton Trinkle came out of spring on top of the depth chart at corner back. Abbott played in all 10 games last season and had 29 tackles, an interception and broke up three passes. He also is an All-American punter. He was second in the nation last year at over 42 yards per kick. Trinkle also played in all 10 games and had an interception. LaDarrell Smith and Darrius Fennel are two younger players that will also fight for time at corner. Ben Hartley and James Place are both highly regarded as safeties. Hartley played most of last year with a broken arm and had 18 tackles. Place started as a freshman and had 61 tackles and broke up four passes. Veterans Darren Seamster, who tore his ACL on the opening kickoff of the second game, and Cameron Prater are also back in the secondary and should add to the depth. The Cowboys’ special teams were also a strong point a year ago. Abbott has a big leg and Ramos is a dangerous return man. Sophomore Mike Hursh is the only experienced placekicker and he was the backup a year ago. He will battle it out with several freshmen for the kicking job.

For the Cowboys to get back to the top of the American Southwest Conference the defense is going to have to improve from 2012. HSU started the year off decent defensively and had a stretch of four straight games where the opponent had under 370 yards, including a 131-yard effort in a shutout of Mississippi College. The Cowboys did it with a lot of young players and they wore down as the season went on. The Cowboys averaged allowing 626 yards and 48 points per game in the last four contests.

The good news is the Cowboys bring a lot back from the defense including five sophomores who are a year stronger and more mature and should hold up more down the stretch. Six of the top seven players on the defensive line, but the one missing is all-American Undra Hendrix. He set the HSU record for defensive tackles with 11 a year ago. Ryne Lewis had 48 tackles, 9.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks as a freshman. Tyler Tennerson had 17 tackles, including 2.5 for loss as a freshman. Korey Zavala played in nine games as a freshman and had 21 tackles, including 2.5 for losses. Connor Nielsen played in all 10 games as a freshman and had a sack. Senior Reid Pride has the most experience of the returning defensive linemen and he had 12 tackles and two for loss with a sack last year as a reserve. Colton Kelley is back after playing in four games before an injury cost him the rest of the season. Jarvis Green has moved over from offensive line and will play at one of the end spots and Trent Walker and Randy Hirsch came up from the junior varsity late in the year. The Cowboys most experienced unit will be the linebacking corps that is highlighted by senior Jonathan Petty. He had 66 tackles, 7.5 for loss, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He will be in his third year as a starter this season.

Wayland Baptist University Pioneers NAIA With their first season tucked neatly away under their collective belts, the Wayland Baptist Pioneers head into the 2013 campaign filled with both high anticipation and expectations. On the heels of reeling in a pair of sweet victories last year, head coach Butch Henderson plans to continue to build on the Pioneers’ initial on-field success as they take another step forward in dusting off a football program that had been hibernating for 72 long years. “We got our first win (a thrilling 27-23 victory over Howard Payne University) and our first homecoming win (a rousing 58-37 triumph over Southwestern Assemblies of God University). Those are two big starting places,” Henderson said. With a roster of nearly all freshmen, the young Pioneers were competitive in almost every other game. “In all games but one we were able to fight down into the third or fourth quarter, but just weren’t able to hang onto it,” Henderson said. “That gave us a good start.” Still, in some ways, it wasn’t enough for the former longtime coach at Lubbock Coronado and Borger. “We’re very gracious to have the two wins, but we expected to win a lot more than that,” he said. “Those were the expectations of the players and the coaches going in.” Wayland’s expectations will only grow now that the Pioneers have some game experience with which to work. Among 63 returning lettermen, starters are back at all 11 defensive positions and 10 on offense. Henderson still would like to have a little more experience in terms of time on the field, but it’s more experience than what the team took the field with a year ago. That and the familiarity with the college game in general should help the Pioneers tremendously in year two. “Maturity,” Henderson said when asked to name what will be the biggest difference between this season and last. “Knowing what we’re facing and how the game is going to be played, I just really feel good about having a great year.” Another big difference for the Pioneers in 2013 is being part of the Central States Football League, alongside Southwestern Assemblies, Texas College, Bacone College, Langston University and start-up Oklahoma Baptist. Henderson feels Langston, which returns 10 starters from the second-rated defensive in the NAIA last year, and Bacone are the top two teams, but also said his Pioneers should be right there with them. “I really think we have a chance to challenge for the conference championship,” he said. “It’s a really tough league, but I feel we’ve matured to the point I feel like we will be able to do that.” Henderson plans to have 150 players in the

program, which this year will include a four-game junior varsity schedule. Of the 150, almost 70 are returning from last season. “The kids really worked hard in the offseason,” Henderson said. Another plus for the Pioneers is a coaching staff that, except for one member, has remained intact. The only newcomer is defensive backs coach Rhudy Maskew, a former Texas Tech assistant under Spike Dykes who also coached with Henderson at Coronado. “Having the same staff and kids (as last season) who have all been in those positions makes a major difference,” Henderson said. “We’re able to go a lot faster. You’re not teaching technique as much as you are (doing reps) because they’ve been there.” The only position in the starting lineup that doesn’t feature starting experience is at left guard. At least one player with starting experience is back at every other spot, with some positions boasting multiple veterans. “To have that type of maturity back makes a big difference,” Henderson said. “They know simple things like how the officials are going to call the game, which is different in every league, and overall just what to expect. They’ve been there.” One of the more impressive veterans is Kendall Roberson (6-0, 210), the junior running back from Lubbock Coronado who ran for 669 yards in eight games, averaging 4.8 yards a carry and scoring 11 of the team’s 14 rushing touchdowns. He also was Wayland’s third-leading receiver with 199 yards. Henderson feels Roberson’s numbers will improve this season if for no other reason than the players around

him have stepped up their game. “Just because we as a team will be better, he will be able to take off and really blossom,” the coach said. “We’ll use him a little bit more as a receiver because he has great hands. He’s a very versatile athlete.” Directing Wayland’s frantic-paced, no-huddle offense will be either Anthony Campuzano (5-10, 185) of El Paso Chapin or Braden Hudson (5-11, 190) of Canadian. As a redshirt freshman, Campuzano got most of the snaps last season, completing 58 percent (111-of-191) of his throws for 1,089 yards with four TDs and 12 interceptions. But he missed four games due to injury, during which time Hudson, a true freshman, filled in much of the time, completing 29-of-66 for 206 yards, one TD and 5 picks. “There will be a great competition there to see who is going to garner the playing time,” Henderson said. “Anthony is a real student of the game (3.9 GPA) and Braden has tremendous leadership skills with the ability to get people around him fired up.” Eight Pioneers ended last season with double-digit catches, led by sophomore Chris Acosta (5-11, 180) of Amarillo Palo Duro with 34 grabs for 344 yards. “He’s one of the most consistent receivers we had,” Henderson said. Roberson’s 26 catches were next, followed by Lovington, N.M. product Josh Bailey’s 24 and Plainview natives Josh Amador’s 23 and Thomas Curry’s 21. Other receivers with starting experience are Seth Eaton of Lubbock Christian High School, Brenner Barnett of Friona, Seth Chatman of Amarillo Caprock, Trent Schuett of Bridgeport and William Brosh of Hawley. Henderson is especially excited about Barnett, who transitioned from quarterback and “had a real strong take-off year and worked extremely hard in the off-season,” along with Bailey, who “probably the most coachable kid I’ve ever been around.” Henderson also praised Eaton for making great strides and having a great spring as well as Schuett for “continuing to blossom.” Up front, Wayne Lum (5-10, 260) of Bastrop returns at center while Cody Dykstra (6-3, 255) of Odessa High is back at left tackle, Brandon Grant (6-3, 280) of Bushland at right guard and Jordan Matthews (6-1, 245) of Mansfield Summit at right tackle. Henderson is comfortable with that quartet, as well as with the team’s recruiting efforts which in large part focused

on linemen. “The guys coming back are all solid, and we have depth behind them with kids who have been there.” While the Pioneers will run much of the same spread offense as last year, Henderson said he’s thrown in a few wrinkles as players get more comfortable with the scheme. “We’ve tweaked it here and there, but we’re still going no-huddle and still throwing the ball. We’ll start wrinkling it in new ways, such as varying our speeds” in an attempt to throw defenses off. As for the Pioneers’ defense, Henderson knows they’ll have to tighten things up after allowing an average of 45 points a game last season. That should happen as the Pioneers, just like on offense, have become more familiar with the defensive schemes. Leading the WBU stopper unit is middle linebacker Jon-Lucas Poe (6-0, 205) of Midland Lee, whose 68 tackles (33 solo, 5½ for loss) led the team in 2013. “Jon is a good leader and just does a really good job,” Henderson said. Ending last season with 63 tackles (30 solo) was strong safety David Hockenberry (6-2, 185) of New Deal, followed by tackle William Chiodo (6-2, 305) of Lubbock Coronado with 43 tackles (21 solo, 7½ for loss). Wayland, which opens practice Aug. 11, kicks off the season in Alamosa, Colo., on Friday , Sept. 6 against NCAA Division II Adam State University, which defeated the Pioneers in their inaugural game at home last year, 55-7. “They were the most physical team we played last year, so our challenge will be to be as physical as they are,” Henderson said. The Pioneers then host Houston Baptist in their home debut, one of two opponents Wayland will face that are in their first season of football, along with CSFL opponent Oklahoma Baptist. “Houston Baptist is transitioning to (NCAA) Division I, so they’re adding scholarships. Looking at the type of athletes they’re getting, they are going to be good really fast,” Henderson said. Besides Houston Baptist and Oklahoma Baptist, Wayland faced its other eight opponents last year. “We played against everybody else,” Henderson said. Now it’s time to remind them.

Abilene High enters 2013 with the type of roster that typically foreshadows a rebuilding season for most high school football programs. But then the Eagles are not like most high school football programs. In his career at Abilene, head coach Steve Warren has put together a run of success that is hard to match. Under his watch, the school has earned 14 straight playoff spots and won 48 of 50 district games since 2004. During that time, the Eagles have advanced to the regional playoff round five times, made one quarterfinal and semifinal appearance and claimed a state championship. Warren will begin his 18th season at Abilene with 25 lettermen in tow, though only six of the holdovers — three on offense and three on defense — were starters last season. Despite the lack of overall experience, the Eagles’ one-back offensive attack should have a leg up with the return of senior linemen Josh Hunter (6-2, 250) and Brycen Homer (6-1, 260). Hunter was an all-district second team performer in 2012. Abilene’s aerial game will also have an experienced receiver in senior Douglas Wilson. Last year Wilson reeled in 18 passes for 240 yards and 5 touchdowns. On defense, the Eagles’ 3-4 set will follow the lead of senior defensive lineman Jake McMillon. Last year McMillon (6-4, 230) registered 29 tackles, 13 assists and 13 sacks en route to earning the district’s Defensive Most Valuable Player nod. AHS should also be strong at linebacker with the return of senior Gabriel Jordan and junior Miguel Espinoza. Jordan was an all-district first teamer in 2012 with 27 solo stops, 14 assists and a sack. Espinoza, the district’s Sophomore Defensive MVP, logged 37 tackles, 15 assists and 7 sacks. Abilene’s special teams will feature a pair of senior kickers in Matt Loftin and Emmanuel Aguilar. Loftin handled the majority of action in 2012, hitting 41 of 44 extra point attempts and going 3-4 in field goal tries. Aguilar made 15 of his 19 extra point attempts and nailed all three of his field goal chances. Abilene opens its two-game non-district slate by hosting Hebron in the Aug. 30 season opener. Abilene Cooper Cougars District 2-5A Abilene Cooper won nine games for the second straight season under head coach Todd Moebes. The Cougars return a solid group of seniors for 2013, including a talented quarterback, so they’ll likely be a force once again in a crowded District 2-5A. Beyond that, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect the Cougars to be in the playoff picture once more. They came out strong in 2012, winning both non-district games by beating Wichita Falls Rider (43-36) and Cedar Park (17-14). The marathon run through District 2-5A began with a loss to Midland Lee (20-28), but Cooper rebounded to win the next two games in impressive fashion over Lubbock Coronado (55-20) and Odessa High (402). A loss to Abilene High derailed the winning streak but the Cougars clawed their way back taking the next two contests in shutout victories over Midland High (41-0) and Amarillo Tascosa (42-0). Cooper closed out the regular season with wins over Odessa Permian (48-10) and San Angelo Central (21-17). The eight district wins were enough to secure the District 2-5A runner up and set up a bi-district battle with El Paso Americas. The Cougars won that game (40-21) but fell in a close game to Arlington (20-27) in the area round game to end their season. The Cougar’s spread offense claims two players that have already given D1 verbal commitments. Senior quarterback Lorenzo Joe (6-2, 185, 4.48) is heading to the University of Texas. Last season, Joe passed for 1988 yards and 15 touchdowns on 148 completions out of 242 attempts. He threw only three interceptions and added another 879 rushing yards and nine touchdowns via the ground. Senior RB/WR Trey Dye (5-9, 170, 4.52) will be at Brigham Young University come 2014. Cooper also boasts a pair of offensive linemen with All-State potential in OT Lucas Raley (6-2, 265, SR, 5.7) and OG Riley Owens (6-2, 290, SR, 5.6) as well as junior OT Jonathan Nicholson (6-3, 250, 5.1), who started 12 games as a sophomore, and All-District OL Quinn Harrell (5-7, 200, SR). Amarillo Tascosa Rebels District 2-5A The Tascosa Rebels are ready to put the 2012 season behind them, as they struggled to meet lofty expectations and ended up finishing with a 1-9 record overall, with a 1-7 record in district play. The Rebels’ 2013 outlook is quite promising, however, as they return 29 lettermen and will be in the second season of running the Flex Bone offense. Head coach Ken Plunk enters the season with a 15-28 record at the helm of Tascosa, and he holds a 32-33 record in his career overall as a head coach. Last year on offense, the Rebels’ first year running the Flex Bone, the team struggled to get things going, gaining just under 2,500 for the entire year. Plunk said senior quarterback Tucker Davidson (6-2, 215), senior running back Austyn Beasley (6-0, 185) and senior wide receiver Beau Gray (6-0, 180) look to remedy the problem behind a more experienced offensive line. Senior punter Tucker Davidson (6-2, 215) will give Tascosa’s defense an advantage in the field position battle. He had 39 punts for 1,572 yards and boasted an impressive 40.3 average yards per punt. “The defense will again, as it always is, be the heartbeat of the team with eight full-time or part-time starters returning,” Plunk said. “Defensive speed and a better understanding of the scheme will be key attributes. Amarillo High Sandies District 3-4A So how does a high school football team react after it becomes a playoff mainstay in one classification and then gets bumped to a different classification? If you’re Amarillo High, you just keep rolling. Last year the Sandies were moved to District 3-4A after making post-season appearances in 14 of their last 16 years as a 5A program. Head coach Mel Maxfield and his squad used the opportunity to renew acquaintances with former district mates Caprock and Dumas, transform non-district rivalries with Palo Duro and Randall into district battles and start a new gridiron grudge against Canyon. When the 4A dust —or sand in this case — settled in 2012 Maxfield and AHS had finished 10-3 overall and claimed the district crown with an unblemished 5-0 mark. The Sandies advanced to the regional playoff round where they gave eventual state champion Denton Guyer one of its toughest tests of the year before falling 38-30. “It was a very rewarding experience,” Maxfield said. “We played an extremely tough schedule and found a way to win 10 games and go three rounds deep in the playoffs.” Maxfield starts his fourth year at Amarillo High with an inexperienced roster that includes 22 returning lettermen. Only two of the holdovers started on offense in 2012 and just four started for the defense. Despite the inexperience, Maxfield is cautiously optimistic that AHS will be in the hunt when the district season rolls around. “We’re trying to make it a reloading year as opposed to a rebuilding year,” Maxfield said. “We feel like we’ve got some good young kids, they just need developing and experience.” The offensive line is always a key for Maxfield’s wing-T offense and the Sandies do have a talented and experienced base returning in senior center Thomas Britt (5-11, 256), senior tight end Dal Burney (6-1, 218) and junior tackle Tate Stavenhagen (6-5, 275). Britt was the all-district first team center last year and Burney (3 catches, 61 yards, 1 touchdown) was named to the all-league second team. Senior quarterback Isaac Garcia (15 passes, 10 completions, 131 yards and 2 touchdowns), senior running back Deon Lynch (37 carries, 269 yards, 2 TDs) and senior receiver Chris Scott (1 catch, 11 yards) are the top returning skill players for AHS in terms of experience. Scott was also named to all-district and All Golden Spread teams at punter with a 38-yard-per-kick average. an all-district first team spot. Returning seniors DeMarcus Harman (7 solo stops, 36 assists, 5 sacks) and Will Chappell (9 tackles, 31 assists) give AHS additional experience at linebacker. Senior Hunter Flory (5-9, 262) registered 17 total tackles and 4 sacks last season and should be an anchor for the 2013 defensive front. Classmate Connor Kinzie (16 total tackles, 1 sacks) also contributed in 2012 and should have an expanded role this season. Amarillo Palo Duro Dons

District 3-4A

The Palo Duro Dons finished 2012 with a 6-5 overall record, went 2-3 in district and notched a playoff berth, but were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by Lubbock Monterey, 38-16. The outlook for the blue and white in 2013 is exactly opposite of what is was entering the 2012 season, as the squad comes in seasoned on defense, but very inexperienced on offense. Head coach Steve Parr carries a 70-81 record in 13 seasons at Palo Duro, and the Dons have not won a playoff game in ten seasons. However, the team is coming off a playoff appearance in 2012 and will look to build on that momentum. Parr believes the running game and overall team speed are points of strength for the Dons, and he will look to use those strengths to his advantage. Offensively, the Dons are returning only two starters. Senior running back Antuan Turner (6-0, 220) has incredible size at his position and will look to carry the load, as he ran the ball 151 times for 973 yards and nine touchdowns a year ago. Senior quarterback Malik Sims (5-11, 160) looks to build off the experience he garnered, as he turned in a solid season by completing 117 passes in 213 attempts for 1823 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Defensively, the Dons will be returning five starters, and opposing offenses will certainly be looking to find ways to deal with big senior defensive

lineman Bryan Chavez (5-11, 310). Last season, Chavez recorded an astounding 88 tackles from the trenches while chipping in two sacks. Parr believes senior linebacker Shenard Shepherd (6-2, 180) has all-state potential, and with his solid combination of size and speed (4.60 40-yard dash), it’s hard not to believe him. Shepherd tallied 80 tackles, 25 being solo, and one sack. Senior defensive back Elton Anthony (5-10, 150) looks to shore up the secondary. Anthony had 40 tackles, 17 solo, and two interceptions in 2012. Three underclassmen to keep an eye on will be junior running back Anthony McLain (5-11, 180), junior defensive back Zacchaeus Watson (5-11, 165) and junior offensive lineman Luis Flores (6-0, 250). McLain comes in with some experience, as he carried the ball 51 times for 383 yards a year ago. Palo Duro will kick off its season at Dick Bivins in Amarillo against the Tascosa Rebels on Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. Its first district game will also be at Dick Bivins against the Sandies of Amarillo High on Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Canyon Eagles District 3-4A The purple and white of Canyon enter the 2013 season with a good amount of momentum from 2012. They finished up the regular season at 8-2 overall, going 4-2 in district play, before a disappointing 45-23 firstround playoff loss to the Tigers of Wolfforth Frenship. Head coach Blake Bryant enters his 15th campaign at Canyon, carrying with him an impressive 90-56 overall record. Bryant said the 2012 team fought hard, showed great character and finished off the regular season really strong. He said the 2013 squad will be young but talented and he believes the experience they have at quarterback is huge. Senior quarterback Blake Weaver (5-10, 171) will be leading the charge in Bryant’s spread offense that returns five starters. Last year, Weaver missed five games due to injury, but was still able to produce a solid season statistically – he completed 101 of his 162 pass attempts for 1,567 yards and 16 touchdowns with only four interceptions. Junior tight end Isaac Garland (6-5, 210) looks to be one of Weaver’s favorite targets as he comes off a solid sophomore season, catching 26 passes for 335 yards and two touchdowns. Versatile junior Cade McCallie (5-10, 185) comes in as the team’s top returning rusher. He ran for 425 yards on 64 attempts with five touchdowns and also subbed in at quarterback when Weaver went down, throwing for 640 yards. McCallie will play on both sides of the ball and line up in the defensive backfield for Canyon, where he recorded three interceptions a year ago. Senior All-Area and All-District offensive lineman Rylan Veigel (6-5, 285) comes off a fantastic 2012 season where he recorded 25 pancake blocks and received an All-State honorable mention. Senior AllDistrict selection Trey Barrientos returns to help Veigel anchor the offensive line. The Eagles will return five starters defensively and be lead by senior linebacker Dylan Douglass (6-3, 230). Last year, Douglass racked up 167 total tackles, one interception and one defensive touchdown, earning him defensive MVP honors in District 3-4A, as well as All-Area and second team All-State selections. Senior linebacker Drew Mannon will return and start alongside Douglass, where he tallied 93 total tackles. Junior Hunter Reece (6-2, 185) will man the defensive backfield with McCallie. He recorded 47 total tackles and three interceptions a year ago. Junior kicker Ryan Guevara looks to build off a very good 2012 season, where he made 42 of 43 PATs and eight of nine field goals attempted, with a longest kick of 46 yards. Canyon will open the season in Lubbock on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m., where they will face the Lubbock High Westerners. They open district play on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. against the Randall Raiders.
