THE THINGS NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT

Of course, since you announced your engagement you’ve been getting bombarded with useful tips, a million questions and lots of opinions, but we thought we’d share some of the secrets no one will tell you about planning the biggest day of your life! 1. IT WILL TAKE YOU TIME TO GET USED TO WEARING YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING

actual prince – your prince!!

Walking around town with a ring on your finger that could have possibly cost the same as your very first car can be daunting! Both the physical feeling of wearing it – getting used to not scraping it off every wall you pass and getting it caught in your best tights stings – and wearing a sparkly symbol of the new life you are planning, will take some getting used to! 2. YOU AND YOUR GROOM WILL DISAGREE

Even if you consider yourself a pretty organised person, throw planning a wedding into the mix and you’ll soon be master of the to-do list, spreadsheet queen and commander in chief of your own destiny – or wedding day anyway! An organised bride is a stressfree bride…

We know this is not really what you want to hear, but getting both your personalities into your wedding day will make it all the more personal for your guests, so a few conversations about what your vision for your wedding day is, along with the obvious what to eat and where to sit your guests will pay off. 3. YOUR CHILDHOOD DREAM OF A BIG WHITE WEDDING MOST LIKELY WON’T HAPPEN

You and your groom will quickly learn the art of delegation – remember to choose your bridal party according to their strengths – a very unorganised, dizzy chief bridesmaid will become a nightmare!

Dreams of a five-year-old, Disney princess wedding are probably not what you want now, are they? It’s okay to have a more grown up approach to your wedding day and anyway, your groom is probably now an

5. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT ABOUT YOURSELF AND OTHERS

6.YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME DOUBTS When the world is rushing around, your wedding is just around the corner, you will have doubts. Have you picked the right colours, will the guests like your choice of food, music, decor etc… Don’t dwell on these thoughts, nerves are completely natural and will make these nasty ideas appear in your head. As long as you end up with a husband on your wedding day,

It will take you both time to get used to wearing your engagement ring and wedding bands. who cares if your ancient old aunt didn’t like the Baileys cheesecake dessert, her loss! 7.ONCE IT’S OVER After devoting months of your

life on this one day, the dress is packed away, the flowers have wilted and your honeymoon tan has begun to fade, chances are you will feel pretty miserable! Yes, it’s not a great feeling but

try to not dwell on it, instead focusing on the new chapter of your life that has suddenly started. Enjoy your hubby before you take on any other major life steps!

Top 10 Wedding-Planning Tips from Newlyweds You're a bride to be. You can never fully anticipate the wedding day until it finally arrives. Here is a selection of wedding tips from brides who have walked down the aisle, said "I Do" and partied with family and friends at their reception! ing, just go with it."

1. Take Your Time "We planned our wedding for sixteen months, and it really helped to keep stress levels down. We got tons of stuff done early and had time to save for the things we really wanted. You only get to plan your wedding once, so make sure it is a fun time, not a stressful one!" 2. Be Present In Each Moment "On your wedding day, soak up all the love, joy and bliss! Enjoy.” 3. Do A First Look

Eileen Clear from Dalystown, Rochfortbridge at Dublin Horse Show wearing a hat by JHK Millinery.

4.YOU WILL BECOME ORGANISED – VERY ORGANISED!

"It was one of the best decisions we made during our wedding planning. Our photographer and videographer collaborated and found a secluded area, away from all the madness that was going on that morning and we got a moment to see each other for the first time. It allowed us to take a deep breath, let the moment sink in, feel all the emotion we were about to feel all day. No matter what you decide, the important thing is choosing what's right for you as a couple."

4. Don't Get Caught Up In "Perfection" "This event is an expression of yourselves, but it's not all you'll ever be. It's just the beginning! Embrace the unexpected, and each others opinions, and don't let an unattainable ideal sour the big picture: You're in this together, now and for the future." 5. Have Faith That All Of Your Efforts Will Be Worth It "Before my wedding, I remember my co-worker telling me that her wedding day was the BEST day of her life, and she was so excited that I would soon be able to experience mine. When I was in the midst of planning my wedding, the long, daily to-do lists and the stress made me feel as if that day would never come. However, it eventually did! When it came, I tried my best to savour every moment of the wedding day from the moment I got out of bed to the moment I walked out of my wedding venue as a married woman - and I'd advise brides and grooms out there to do the same."

6. Try Not To Stress "Remember why you are getting married, and try to truly make it be an event about (and for) both of you. Have faith in your vendors and photographer, and trust that they will do their job well! And once it's happen-

8. Prioritise, Prioritise, Prioritise "We wanted the whole day to be a celebration of the rest of our lives. We wanted people to walk away saying, 'That was so much fun.' And we were able to accomplish that. Choose the few

things that are really important to you, like the photographer and DJ were to us, and then go from there. Be flexible on the other details and remember to have fun." 9. Accept That You Can't Please Everyone "You cannot make everyone happy, and trying to accommodate others will just make the whole process more daunting. This is your day; make it about you. It really is the only day that you will get that chance." 10. Remind Yourself What's Truly Important "My biggest piece of advice for brides and grooms planning their wedding is to never forget that it is a celebration of the union between two people." Also, remember it isn't all about you. Yes, it is your wedding and the celebration is in your honour, but a wedding is also an opportunity to thank all of the important people in your life who love and support you. It is to celebrate love, and it is meant to be fun! Enjoy it!"

WEDDING GUIDE

TAKE IT FROM ME A bride’s advice to making your special day perfect

Julie Watson from Dunboyne married Killucan man, William Leech 3 years ago in Dunboyne church, followed by a beautiful reception at the Springfield Hotel in Leixlip. Julie managed to keep level-headed throughout the entirety of the wedding plans, so the former-bride to be shared with us her secrets to a stress-free day. 1. Take time for two ‘One of the things we were told was to take time during the reception for just the two of us to sit down and take it all in. The day goes so fast so it’s nice to have a little time together.” 2. It’s your day

4. Organisation

“Don’t get caught up on what everyone else does or what other people tell you, it’s your day, do things the way you want!” 3. The guest list “Only invite the people that you want and don’t feel obliged to invite people that you wouldn’t really want there. For the seating plan I think it

worked well putting people from both sides on one table, they mingled more and meant that people got to know each other before the evening part." "Try to do everything as early as possible, such as the pre-marriage course, and pay as much as you can in advance. We kept a spreadsheet of the price of everything and ticked it off as we went. It worked for us anyway."

Julie and William on their special day.

“The less stress, the more you enjoy your day” Most brides spend their engagement stressing over the little things like the type of bouquet, the menu, even the nails, but Siobhan Kellaghan’s wedding couldn’t have been more relaxed if it tried. Married to John Henry in St. Joseph’s Church, Rathwire, followed by an intimate reception in Bloomfield House Hotel, Siobhan’s wedding sounds very unusual when contrasted to most modern bridal stories, but it also seems like one of the happiest weddings of them all. Take note, ladies. The Engagement “We didn’t tell people we were getting married until everything was sorted, the church booked and reception chosen. We had paid for the ring back in July, but I didn’t actually pick it up until Christmas. The jewellers must have thought the whole thing was called off. We didn’t tell everybody until the end of April about the wedding. Of course I told my mum a few weeks before everyone else, and John asked my Dad for my hand in marriage but other than that noone knew. The Bridesmaids “When my own sister got married I asked not to be a bridesmaid. So on my own wedding day I didn’t want to ask anyone or to put anyone else under pressure. My sister and John’s brother were going to be there on the day anyway so they signed the registrar. I’m not into fuss.” The Dress “The dress that I wore belonged to a friend of mine. She didn’t know I was getting married and when I was visiting I just

happened to ask her where was her wedding dress. So I asked if I could try it on. It was a lovely classic dress. Very simple. She asked me, “Siobhan, do you need a wedding dress?” and I told her “I will someday.” It suited perfectly for my day. If I had my way I would have slipped in the side door instead of walking up the aisle, I was there before the priest was even dressed!” The Flowers and Music “At our pre-marriage course the priest talked about choosing the readings and music. We did pick the readings but we didn’t pick the music, we let the musician pick the songs. I just figured that he does these type of things all the time, so he would know what would suit. I told the florist to choose the flowers herself too and they were beautiful. I didn’t see them until I arrived at the church. It was all a surprise in a sense. I didn’t have any expectations and so I wasn’t disappointed in any way. Everyone did a fantastic job.” The Guests “Our wedding was fam-

We didn’t want a big, extravagant wedding and it meant that on the day we got a chance to talk to everyone, and everyone that was there was there because we wanted them to be. There was no hassle, no stress and I could really enjoy the day. It was a very intimate wedding and we had a howl. We did invite more people to the after party as John loves a good party and it is all about compromise.”

Speeches “Myself and John agreed that we didn’t want to make any speeches. Before the wedding I thanked everyone that I wanted to thank, and John did the same.” Siobhan’s advice “I think everyone is different. Some people like to cross every t and dot every i but that’s just not my thing. I believe that the less stressed you are, the more you enjoy your day and nothing will stand in the way. I really

was so happy, in fact I’m still so happy. On day the of the wedding it rained for the first day in 6 weeks, and while everyone tried to hide it from me, I just thought “So what, I’m here, I hope he’s at the church and after that then it doesn’t matter.” Months after her wedding, Siobhan is still beaming with joy just thinking about the day and it seems that her no fuss wedding helped the couple focus on the most important aspects of the day.

10 WEDDING GUIDE LEGAL WORK In the excitement of picking the dress and of course being newly engaged, it can be easy to forget about the legalities and practicalities surrounding marriage. There are two types of wedding that take place in Ireland, Religious and Civil. Although they differ slightly the basis for both is the same. Whatever style of wedding you choose, don’t forget these important steps along the way to your big day...

HENS ON THE LOOSE

1. Notification Whether you are getting married in Ireland, or are an Irish citizen hoping to marry abroad, couples must give a minimum of three months notice to the Registrar’s office in order to get married. An appointment must be made to give said notice, so ensure that your appointment is made in plenty of time to allow for three months’ notification. Visit crsappointments.ie for more information. Civil marriages that take place in registrar offices only take places Monday to Friday, so bear this in mind if you are hoping for a weekend ceremony. 2. Pre-marriage certificate Catholic marriages require couples to partake in a marriage preparation course and the certificate from this must be given to the priest prior to the marriage ceremony. 3. Pre-nuptial enquiry form This applies to Catholic weddings and must be filled in the presence of the priest in the parish that you live in. When filling in this form the couple must bring baptismal certificate, confirmation certificate and premarriage certificate form. 4. Solemnising the marriage Once you have registered you will be issued with a marriage registration form which grants you the authorisation to be married. This must be presented to whoever is solemnising the marriage, be it religious or otherwise. 5. Returning forms Following the celebrations, the registration forms must be returned to the registrar within one month for the marriage to be registered and recognised. 6. Status Now that you are married you status changes in regard to lots of things ie. life insurance, pension, inheritance, taxation, etc. the list goes on.. The best way to advise yourself on your status changes is to visit www.citizeninformation.ie where you will find a list of tabs relating to all your needs.

Along with last minute wedding details, and keeping the bride sane, one of the most important roles as maid of honour is throwing a hen party to remember (for all the right reasons). There are hundreds of options available online from the girly tea party, to the adventure junkie’s surfing weekend, but how exactly does one keep all attendees happy? Here is how to throw the perfect Hen do. 1. WHO OK, so you and the bridal party will obviously be there, then there’s your shared best mates, but what about cousins and her friends that you don’t know? Don’t forget Aunt Mary and that girl only the bride can stand. The best thing to do is to ask the bride who she would like to see there, then she can decide who she wants to celebrate with. 2. AUDIENCE Now that you know who is attending, it’s important to cater your event to suit everyone there. Make the day flexible so people can choose to avoid certain parts, but still feel included, i.e. afternoon tea with aunties, mums and anyone who wants to join, and then cocktail hour later with old college friends. If you’re planning something adventurous during the day such as zip-lining, make sure people who can’t take part have something to look forward to when they join the party later. 3. SAVE THE DATE

Ensure to hold your hen party at least 4-6 weeks in advance of the wedding where possible. This allows time for their wallets to recover in time for the wedding and also means everyone will be looking extra fresh when the wedding comes around. Nobody wants the female version of ‘The Hangover’ movie. 4. COSTS Be realistic with the budget and be sure to remember that not everyone will be of the same financial ability. Bare in mind that the average hen weekend can cost around €200, so give people plenty of notice and give them a breakdown of costs. Include cost of transport etc. and link anything that can be paid for in advance so the cost will be spread over a few weeks. 5. BREAK THE ICE There’ll be a wide range of groups at the hen, no matter how small, and not everyone

will have met before. Be sure to remember guests’ names and their connection with the bride and have ice-breaking activities ready to begin the day. 6. COMMUNICATION Keep in contact with hen guests and keep them up to date with the planning. Inform them of dress code and any necessary outfit changes e.g. runners, swimsuits or cocktail dresses. It is nice to keep everyone surprised but at the same time they need to be prepared. 7. INVOLVE THE GROOM Although the night is all about the bride-tobe, it can be nice to involve the groom with quirky favours throughout the night. Some ideas would be to ask the groom questions about the bride before the night, and get her to guess his answers in a fun game, or ask the groom to write her a letter that she can open on the night.

8. STEN It’s becoming more and more popular these days to combine both the stag and hen parties together for one big party. Perfect for couples who have most of their friends in common, and for brides who aren’t into typical hen nights. Make sure that the groom is up for sharing his night and don’t assume he’ll be willing to sacrifice his ‘lads on stag’ evening. 9. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING This is a night that not only the bride, but all guests will want to remember for a very long time. Take as many pictures as you can and keep any tickets/tokens or keepsakes along the way. Encourage guests to do the same and work on a scrapbook to give to the bride as a memento of the event. The maid of honour can be a stressful role, but once you follow these tips, your duties are sure to be eased.

MAKE A LIST

MAKE THE MUSIC

CHECK IT TWICE, THREE TIMES, Getting engaged is amazing, and as you ETC. begin to plan your wedding you can be so full

MEMORABLE!

of love that you want the entire world to attend your event. While you may want to invite the entire world, venue space and your budget will most likely impose the need to limit your guest list to a specific number of people. Thus the guest list dilemma begins. Below are six tips to help you decide who should share in your special day.

1. CRUNCH THE NUMBERS One way to begin creating your guest list is to make a list of all of the family members, friends and business associates you would like to have at your wedding. Tally that number to get a broad sense of the number of potential guests. 2. PLUS ONE If you’re inviting single friends and family, you will need to decide if they can bring a date to your wedding. This is a huge factor in your guest list size. You can decide on a hard line of no dates unless you’re married, or loosen up and allow guests who are engaged or who have been together over X number of years to bring their significant others. 3. THE PARENT FACTOR Keep in mind that if your parents are helping fund your wedding, they will have a list of guests that they want to invite (hello golf buddies and neighbours). If you anticipate a lengthy list of folks your fiancé has never met, you can allocate 10 or 20 invitations for each of your parents, so they edit their lists before you have to downsize yours. 4. COLLEAGUES Inviting your respective bosses and work associates is another large factor in the size of your guest list. If you invite one of your colleagues, you then have to invite all of the others or risk office drama. This is a personal decision and how long you’ve worked at your place of employment and how closely your social life is tied to your career become factors. 5. MAKING THE CUT What do you do when you can’t invite everyone you want at your wedding? One of the best pieces of wedding wisdom imparted to me as a bride was “The people at your wedding should be the ones who will support your relationship and marriage throughout your life.” Using that wisdom as a lens is incredibly helpful when making your wedding guest list. It makes it easier to cross off a few of your friends who are fun but will probably never support themselves, much less your marriage. 6. THE “B LIST” If there are a handful of guests that you can’t include in your original invitation list, consider making a “B list” to whom you can mail invitations to as you receive negative RSVPs. This option gives you a little wiggle room on your list, but try to send your “B list” invites as soon as you can to avoid hurt feelings (as no one wants to know that they’re on the “B list”).

WEDDING GUIDE

The wedding band or D.J., whichever you decide to choose, can make or break your dream day. It’s often one of the things people remember best from your big day (next to how fabulous you looked obviously) and a good band will have your wedding guests glad that they RSVP’d. No pressure or anything, but it is very important to choose your band wisely, but lucky for you we have all the tips you need to choose the band that will help you dance the night away. 1. WHERE TO START

4. QUESTIONS

Wedding plans have only started and you’re probably already sick of hearing wedding advice from friends and family, but when it comes to band advice you better listen up. Word of mouth is a great way to find out about bands, especially when you’re hearing it from friends who will be attending your wedding. After that google is your best friend. Search for wedding band websites and troll through some band advice forums.

Try to have a list of questions prepared for your band, so you can rest assured everything will run smoothly on the night. Bear in mind questions such as: How long will they play for? What time will they finish at? Will they learn your first dance? Is the deposit refundable? Do they provide music between sets, and if so will there be an extra cost? While meeting with the band, discuss the option of a playlist also, and make sure to describe a ‘do-not play’ list. Are your guests really the Y.M.C.A. type?

2. STYLE You might be a number one AC/DC fan, but we highly doubt that all your wedding guests share the same passion. Picking a band personal to your style is great, but make sure that they cater to a wide variety of audiences too. Bands can range from the classic 4 piece wedding band, to ceilí to salsa, so just make sure your band caters to both you and your guests.

5. COST Due to the big effect entertainment has on weddings, many couples choose to allocate a good amount of the budget for their band. The cost of the band is completely personal to your wedding as small wedding parties often choose 2-3 piece bands, while larger weddings can sometimes splash out on

large brass bands. Take into account the deposit and also potential extra fees for music in between sets and the cost of providing food and drink for band members. 6. BATTLE OF THE WEDDING BANDS The Sheraton Athlone Hotel, in association with Big Day agency will be hosting a 'Battle of the Wedding Bands' event at their Ultimate Wedding Evening at the hotel on Thursday the 10th of September from 6-9pm. There you'll be able to see great wedding bands such as The Cosmonauts, The Satellites and The Rockets featuring Derek Feery. There is also a free DJ if you book you band at the event, which might make your choice a little easier. These tips are also relevant when choosing a wedding DJ for the whole night or for after the main band. Most importantly your band should be fun, live and personal. Don’t forget to enjoy the viewing process along the way.

Viewing your band live is crucial before putting down any deposits. Many bands post live videos on their websites but think twice before you ‘look and book’ in relation to online videos. If you can’t attend send a close friend or family member with similar taste to your own and get them to take their own videos on their phone. DO NOT hire a band that you saw once at a bar at an outdoor concert. Your wedding venue will create a completely different atmosphere so be careful where you choose to see the band also.

Planning the perfect

honeymoon... Usually taking place following the wedding ceremony, the history of honeymoons goes back a long way. You may want something classy, different, or special, but probably not too costly. Something that will be memorable but at the same time doable. If this is you, then read on for the 15 best places to go for your honeymoon and plan on making the most of your time together... 15. KENYA Being in Kenya is like setting your foot in paradise where you will witness the abundance of flora and fauna, together with the majesty of nature such as the pristine forests and the fascinating sight of Mt. Kilimanjaro. 14. CALIFORNIA There are so many places to visit in California that going through all the many famous places there would take you many days. However, if you want to focus on the locations that would set the mood and create those special moments, visiting Disneyland would be one of the best choices. 13. FLORIDA Being in the Sunshine State only means that you would be experiencing a lot of sun, even in wintry days. Known to be one of the best destinations for honeymoons at any time of the year, Florida gives you the ambience of the Caribbean without going too far from the city. 12. THAILAND Aside from tasting their exotic food and colorful culture, Thailand is also an amazing destination for couples who would like to have an encounter with world-class spa and wellness services, all provided by courteous and accommodating staff. You can also feel the embrace of temperate winds as you stay at bungalow beaches that give you all the privacy you need, while hearing the hush of splashing waves underneath the perfect evening sky. 11. COOK ISLANDS If you are looking for an out-of-country desti-

nation that takes heed to your demand of seclusion and isolation, then going to the Cook Islands is the perfect option for you and your spouse. Choose between two of the grandest locations where you would like to spend time together, such as the Aitutaki Lagoon and Rarotongan Beach Resorts. 10. NEW ZEALAND You are in for a treat when you visit New Zealand as your honeymoon destination. Why is that? First of all, most of the natural sceneries here, especially those in the colder parts of the country are so magical that some of them have been used in the filming of ‘Lord of the Rings’. Second, with only 4 million people in a place that’s as big as the UK, you can expect that most of the locations there, including islands, beaches, plains, hilltops, and forests are all to yourself, particularly in off- peak seasons. 9. ARUBA Aruba is another one of the many honeymoon destinations that offer temperate weather all year long. So whether you take your time off before spring or just in time for winter, reaching this place would be the same no matter your holiday preference. What’s special about having a honeymoon here is that you get perks and other free items as you stay in one of the hotels that support the One Cool Honeymoon Programme. 8. AUSTRALIA The continent of Australia is such a big place that it can be quite overwhelming to visit as a honeymoon destination. If you love to experience the beach and spend time with water activ-

ities, the east coast, which has Fraser Island, Hyams Beach, and Ninety Mile Beach, would be the best choice for you. Go down south, and you are in for a cold treat with snow-capped mountains and frozen hills. 7. US VIRGIN ISLANDS Simply put, the US Virgin Islands is one of the destinations you can visit for island-hopping fun, whether it be in St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, and other smaller isles that can be found nearby. Although you are already imagining water sports as the main activity here, there are a number of other things to be done here as well. 6. COSTA RICA Going to Costa Rica is a journey that can give you fresh air, away from the common pollution and stress of busy city life. Known to be one of the many countries that are aiming for minimizing carbon footprints, you can expect flora and fauna at its most natural state, where forests, and other ecosystems have been preserved by government efforts. 5. SOUTH AFRICA Although there are attractive beaches and relaxing coastlines on the edges of South Africa, you just cannot overlook the fact that this region offers some of the rarest and up-close moments on earth where couples can watch leopards, rhinoceri, buffaloes, lions, and elephants in their actual habitat.

destinations for couples, especially those who are looking for something different. Aside from seeing Bali’s white sand beaches and enjoying their many water sport activities, you can also find yourself playing with wild monkeys or receiving a massage from one of the many rejuvenating spas located here. 3. GREECE There are many things to expect in Greece, and exploring places like Athens, Acropolis, Crete, or Aegina would also give you moments of embarking on a whole new adventure. 2. FRANCE Though France may be a big place for you to explore and visit, setting your sights on the City of Lights should help you keep your honeymoon together. Paris, also known as one of the most romantic cities in the world, has received its title because of the ambiance in the city that can be felt everywhere you look. Whether you eat a dinner for two atop the Eiffel Tower, experience serenades in the streets, or savor the genuine French breads and the sweet wine, you can have an amazing time anywhere you go around this amorous city. 1. HAWAII Often ranked as one of the best honeymoon spots in the world with volcanoes, beaches, and a remote location, you can go island hopping to Maui, Kauai, Hawaii, Molokai, and Lanai, knowing that there are a number of diverse environments to explore.
