Athlone Equestrian Centre is located off exit 9 of the M6 motorway and just 4km from the centre of Athlone Town. It provides horse riding lessons to adults and kids in a fun, friendly environment. Forest Treks are also very popular for groups, couples and families and no experience is required to take part. The trek is very scenic along country lanes with views of Moydrum Castle. For those with experience, you will be brought on an exhilarating canter through the woods. Pony Camps are run Monday to Friday over school holidays from 10am-3pm for ages 6-16 where kids get to learn how to take care of their pony and enjoy a lesson each day of camp. THE view of the River Shannon from Athlone's Town Bridge is one of the 'wow' factors of the town. It is the crown in the jewels of Athlone's attractions. Walk across the Athlone Bridge and look at Athlone Castle on one side and the Luan Gallery on the other, take a trip on the Shannon, up Lough Ree, on to Hodson Bay, and come back into town and sample the fare offered in the hotels, restaurants, pubs. The Mullingar/Moate/Athlone Cycleway/Greenway now extends to The White Gates and is ideal for cycling and walking. A few minutes drive outside of Athlone on the N55 LongfordCavan road there is a public viewing area across Lough Ree, which is one of the most spectacular to be found anywhere in the world. In recent years "The Lonely Planet" described Athlone as one of the liveliest little towns Ireland.

The centre at Kenagh, Co. Longford, interprets an Iron Age bog road that was built in the year 148 B.C. close to the River Shannon. The oak road is the largest of its kind to have been uncovered in Europe and inside the interpretive centre, an eighteenmetre stretch of the preserved trackway is on permanent display in a hall specially designed to preserve the ancient wooden structure. This centre highlights the importance of the site in archaeological terms and has become a major attraction in the Midlands of Ireland. Bord na Móna and the Office of Public Works have carried out conservation work on the surrounding bog to ensure that it remains wet and that the buried road remains preserved. Clonmacnoise Includes Seven Churches

CLONMACNOISE (the Irish Cluain Mhic Nois meaning the meadow of the sons of Nos) was founded by St. Ciaran in 548. Over the centuries it became a major centre of religion, learning, trade, craftsmanship and political influence. As the burial place of St. Ciaran, it has attracted pilgrims for nearly 1500 years. Clonmacnoise is located on an esker ridge overlooking the River Shannon. The site includes the ruins of a cathedral, seven churches (10th-13th century), two round towers, three high crosses and the largest collection of Early Christian graveslabs are on display in the Visitors Centre. The long history of Clonmacnoise is captured and told in an audiovisual presentation, shown in the Visitors Centre. Exhibitions deal with the flora, fauna and landscape of the region.
